1. Loot everything and scrap items

From the moment you’re dropped into the world of Outward, you’ll find that money is hard to come by. This should motivate you to loot everything you see and inevitably make you face the most difficult boss of Outward - inventory management.

Make it easier on yourself and scrap weapons and armor instead of dropping them to make room for others. Scrapping can be done anywhere, providing you with essential materials like cloth and metals, as well as rare crafting materials you’ll find yourself in need of as the game progresses.

To scrap gear:

Go to your inventory
Tap on the crafting menu
Click on one of the four empty boxes
Place your item of choice

2. Use your basic abilities

Many players go through multiple playthroughs without realizing the power of the starting abilities. More specifically, the Throw Lantern skill. It’s one of the most underrated ones in the game, yet few players ever use it. It does destroy a whole lantern, but they are easy to find or craft and help you deal with most early-game mobs and bosses who are usually weak to fire. It’s also really fun to use!

To make a cheap lantern, all you need is the following:

2x Iron Scraps
Thick Oil
Linen Cloth

3. Upgrade your backpack as soon as possible

As we mentioned before, inventory management can be a nightmare in Outward. Luckily, you can get some fantastic backpacks fairly early in the game. This should be a top priority for anyone planning to leave Cierzo and start exploring. The best backpacks provide buffs, but a regular old backpack with a fair carrying capacity will make your journey much safer and more profitable.

Great beginner backpacks are:

Adventurer’s Backpack - Has a 35 carrying capacity but does not interfere with the speed of your rolls (can be found with traveling merchants or by visiting the Friendly Immaculate cave in the starting zone.
Nomad Backpack - 50 carrying capacity. Can be purchased from one of the merchants in Cierzo’s town square.
Mefino’s Trade Backpack - A whopping 110 carrying capacity. Can be found in the bandit fortress right outside Cierzo. Requires 2x Power Coils to unlock.

4. Check every corner

Outward rewards exploration to an extreme degree. There are puzzles, hidden chests, corpses, and phantom menaces at every corner. All you have to do is look - you might be surprised that your ridiculous assumptions are often fruitful.

5. Bring a source of light

Do NOT underestimate darkness in Outward. Most dungeons in the game are pitch-dark, which not only affects your ability to navigate them but seriously hinders your combat. Let there be light.

Here are a few sources of light you should consider at the start of the game:

Torches - Very easy to make. They also provide a bit of warmth for when you’re cold.
Lanterns - Your must-have light source. They can be attached to most backpacks so that you can use your hands more efficiently. Lanterns run out but can be refueled using Thick Oil.

6. Invest in a better tent early

Tents don’t just skip time and recover burnt stats. They offer powerful bonuses that can make an absurd difference in the open world - ranging from stamina regeneration to cooldown reduction and even raising resistances. You should ideally have a sleep bonus active at all times.

Here are a few tents you’ll easily find early on:

Camouflaged Tent - Can be purchased in Berg. It’s very time and resource-efficient as it reduces the threat of being ambushed while you sleep, allowing you to put fewer hours on guard duty. Also temporarily grants a powerful stamina-cost reduction buff.
Fur Tent - Can be purchased in Cierzo. -15% to stamina costs is ridiculously good to combat and traveling. On top of this, it increases your cold resistance.

7. Stack up on tea

Your total Health, Stamina, and Mana will slowly deplete the more you use them. The locked stats are called Burnt Stats. To replenish them, you have to sleep, eat food, or drink tea. Trust me when I say this - you’ll be drinking a ton of tea in Outward. Luckily, they are easy to make and have other bonus stats. But when you lack the ingredients, don’t be afraid to buy a few from local vendors. I usually keep at least 5 of each, just to be safe.

Tea you should have in Outward:

Mineral Tea - Restores burnt health and removes indigestion
Bitter Spicy Tea - Restores burnt stamina and protects from cold weather
Soothing Tea - Restores burnt Mana and cures Common Cold

8. Exploit food buffs

You’ll never really die of hunger in Outward. You can easily survive on berries and travel rations. However, good food makes an incredible difference in combat and when dealing with harsh weather conditions. The effects range from small quality-of-life improvements to down-right overpowered. And most recipes are not that difficult to prepare. A few foods you should easily have in your inventory in the early game are:

Cierzo Ceviche - Regenerates health and mana and increases resistances. All around a great consumable to have.
Gaberry Tartine - Super easy to make, perishes slowly, and increases your stamina regen significantly.
Ocean Fricassee - Health, mana, and stamina regeneration. Really powerful effect.

9. Buy gold ingots

When traveling long distances, you can visit any merchant and purchase gold ingots. They always cost exactly 100 silver, no matter where you are. However, gold ingots are 10x more weight-efficient than silver. You may also be robbed when you die, so gold ingots are a preventive measure for losing wealth.

10. Carry (and use) elemental rags

Every enemy in Outward is weak to a certain element. Luckily, you don’t need a weapon or spells to deal elemental damage - you can imbue your weapon with rags, which are very easy to make. They’re light and powerful, so you have no excuse not to carry at least 1 per element.

Here’s how you can craft Elemental Rags:

Fire Rag - Linen Cloth + Thick Oil
Ice Rag - Linen Cloth + Seaweed
Poison Rag - Linen Cloth + Grilled Crabeye Seed
Bolt Rag - Linen Cloth + Larva Egg

Extra Tip: Most enemies in Cierzo will be weak to Fire Damage. Stock up on Fire Rags!

11. Drop your backpack before combat

Mobility is crucial in combat, and backpacks tend to hinder your movement. Simply pressing B before entering a fight will make you much more agile, and most importantly, you’ll be able to roll freely à la Dark Souls.

12. Find trainers in every major city

Each big settlement has talent trainers. Unlike most RPGs, you’re free to learn from all of them and make your own build. If you’re short on cash or don’t want to waste your Breakthrough Points, it’s still worth it to talk to the trainers. Most of them have cheap passive perks that can help you survive.

Good skills to learn early on:

Weather Tolerance - +8 to weather defenses, +5 to Decay Resistance. Learn it from the Cabal Hermit trainer in Chersonese.
Fitness - +25 total health, 20% increased health regeneration while sleeping. Learn from the Kazine Spellblade trainer in the starting town, Cierzo, for only 50 silver. This is a no-brainer.
Brace - Considered one of the most powerful spells in the game, it blocks an attack and grants you the Discipline boon, increasing your physical damage. Only costs 50 silver and can be trained with the Warrior Monk trainer in Monsoon.

13. Don’t be afraid to use breakthrough points

Each only has 3 breakthrough points. They can unlock the most powerful spells in each skill tree. On first playthroughs, many players hoard their points until it’s too late. A piece of advice I wish I had known earlier was to be more generous with how I spend Breakthrough Points when just starting out. In your first playthrough, focus on exploring and surviving longer.

Great beginner picks for Breakthrough skills are:

Survivor's Resilience - +40 total health. Can be learned from the Wild Hunter trainer in Berg.
Leyline Connection - Allows you to regenerate mana passively. Can be learned from the Philosopher trainer in Monsoon.

14. Carry extra waterskins and gaberries

A simple but very effective tip is to carry waterskins and gaberries to aid your stamina regeneration. Outward forces you to travel great distances. Water and berries increase your stamina regeneration and therefore save you a lot of time. Not to mention that stamina is your #1 stat when it comes to combat. Theoretically, you can survive most fights with 1 hp as long as you have enough stamina to keep blocking.

15. Use ethereal damage

Ethereal damage is considered the best damage source in Outward because most enemies aren’t resistant to it. You can easily imbue your weapon with Ethereal Varnishes, learn skills that deal Ethereal Damage, and be on the lookout for weapons that deal Ethereal damage.

Your best sources of Ethereal damage early on are:

Spiritual Varnish - Frequent world drop. Can also be purchased or crafted.
Troglodyte Staff - You can find troglodytes in caves near and even below Cierzo.
Rune Sage Talents - The Rune Sage is, hands-down, the most powerful early to mid-game skill tree, mainly consisting of Ethereal Damage spells. It’s ridiculously fun to play too! Go to Berg to learn how to cast Runes.

16. Beware of traps

Traps in Outward are rare enough to forget about but frequent enough to become your mortal enemies. They can be deadly, almost one-shotting adventurers who forget to mind their footing.

Be most careful about traps:

Near and within bandit encampments
Instanced dungeons

17. Be patient in combat

Combat in Outward is difficult to master. Starting, you’ll want to roll and move around your enemies, taking advantage of blind spots and attack animations. It’s always fun to spam-attack an enemy, but in Outward, hostile mobs often have short attack animations that are difficult to predict. Take your time and kill your enemies hit by hit. Except if you want to die - then please, be my guest.

18. When in danger - run away

You can literally run past any mob in the game and lose aggro in a few seconds or minutes. A mistake many beginner players make is to think they have to fight everything they see. No - in fact, it’s a bad idea.

Running through the world, you’ll often be tired, out of potions, and with burnt stats. Running away is a legit strategy, and there’s no shame.

19. Don’t hoard consumables

Skyrim messed us up with this…

With many RPGs, we tend to hoard potions and food. Outward is difficult - and consumables matter. So don’t you dare to think, “Oh, I’ll just save this for later,” when later never actually comes. Use your potions, apply your varnishes, and utilize all advantages. Because it really makes a difference to your well-being and inventory management.

20. Pay attention to geographical landmarks

While you do have a map, your location isn’t shown in real time. This is very immersive but difficult to navigate at first. It’s okay - we’re used to being hand-held in open worlds.

Outward requires planning and attention. Trust me; it’s worth it.

21. Butterflies are your best friends

This is a lesser-known Outward mechanic. Whenever you find a butterfly congregation, this indicates a safe sleeping spot. Place your tent there, and you won’t have to worry about being ambushed. Neat!

22. Set up a small camp in each of the major cities

You’ll be traveling from city to city quite often. To save time and resources, you should set up a small camp in each city, so you’re all cozy and prepped to rest.

The camp should consist of:

Plant Tent - Can be bought in any city for 8 silver. You can’t collect this item once you place it, but it’s perfect for a city camp because it refills your hunger and thirst while you sleep - a permanent hotel room for 8 silver.
Campfire - A source of warmth and a place to cook food, craft items, and brew potions.
A backpack - Leave a backpack on the ground that will act as a local bank.

23. Your decisions matter - take your time

Outward doesn’t have a ton of dialogue, but when you engage in conversation with NPCs, make sure to read through it. Your decisions make a massive difference in the way the world operates, and you could potentially miss out on powerful perks that can only be acquired through building a good relationship with certain major and minor factions.

24. Don’t try to min-max by watching guides

No better way to ruin your fun than by looking at what other players are doing. Explore the world, learn about the factions, determine what skills fit your playstyle, and play your own game. Sure, some builds are better, but you can confidently beat the game with even the weakest builds. Don’t overcomplicate it. Have fun!

Vine goo is a fairly easy resource to obtain, as you don’t need any tools to gather its raw resource, seaweed. All you have to do is swim down to the seaweed and right-click it to gather. After that, you can smelt the seaweed to make vine goo, one of the most important resources for advanced machinery and tools. Here are 8 things you can craft with vine goo.

8. Sweep Net

Sweeping bees in a net.

The sweep net is the only method you can use to gather bees. You’ll need bees to craft beehives; that way, you can farm honey. Honey is mandatory for making biofuel.

To gather bees, wait until the swarm of bees is low enough for you to catch them in your net. If you miss them and disrupt them, there’s a chance you’ll get stung by them.

Why it’s a Great Item:

Used to catch bees.
25 uses, which is enough to obtain lots of bees.

How to get Sweep Net:

7. Empty Bottle

You can fill the bottle with five cups of water.

The bottle is such a holy grail item early-game. No more drinking one cup at a time and having to return to your raft in the middle of exploring an island, when you have the bottle. It holds 5 cups of water, which will keep you going for a while without having to go back to collect more fresh water.

The empty bottle is also a crafting ingredient for binoculars and the oxygen bottle. I honestly find no use for the binoculars, but they make the game more fun and immersive. The oxygen bottle, on the other hand, is so useful for deep diving for resources.

Why it’s a Great Item:

Holds 5 cups of water.
Great water storage early-game.
Can be used to craft an oxygen bottle.

How to get Empty Bottle:

6. Flippers

Deep sea swimming with diving gear.

Exploring the ocean becomes much faster and more efficient with the flippers. Once equipped, they will increase your swimming speed.

I always keep some flippers handy and use them immediately after killing the shark. This way, I can collect as many underwater resources as possible before the shark respawns.

The durability of flippers is 600 uses, each of which is 1 second of movement. The durability of flippers will deplete while you swim and walk around with them on, so if you aren’t moving, remember to take them off.

Why it’s a Great Item:

Increases swimming speed.
Will allow you to get to deeper parts of the ocean faster.
Durability lasts a fairly long time.

How to get Flippers:

5. Oxygen Bottle

Immediately after killing the shark, I will equip my oxygen bottle and flippers to gather underwater resources more quickly and efficiently before the shark respawns.

The durability of the oxygen bottle is 600 uses, with each second spent wearing it depleting 1 use. This means the oxygen bottle is good for 10 minutes. Remember to take it off when you’re on the surface.

Why it’s a Great Item:

It allows you to hold your breath underwater for longer.
Durability lasts 10 minutes.
It helps you dive deeper to get more valuable resources.

How to get Oxygen Bottle:

4. Circuit Board

You need this receiver to progress in the game.

The circuit board is a crafting ingredient for several advanced tools and machinery, such as the receiver, the electric purifier, and the electric smelter.

You need the receiver and antennas to progress in the game– there is no other way. You’ll receive the blueprint for the receiver by opening up barrels floating on the ocean. Once you’ve done that, your journey in Raft begins.

Later in the game, you’ll come across recipes for wonderful quality-of-life items such as the springer and the engine controls. Both of these are crafted with circuit boards.

Can be used to craft advanced machinery.
It is fairly cheap to make.
You need it to progress in the game.

3. Basic Bow

Ready to explore Caravan Island.

The bow is a great weapon if you don’t want to get near powerful enemies like bears and boars. It is durable for 60 uses, so it should last quite a few island adventures before you have to replace it.

The amount of damage done to an enemy depends on the type of arrow you’re using. Stone arrows inflict 10 damage, metal arrows inflict 15 damage, and titanium arrows inflict 20 damage. Taking a bear as an example, it will take 10 shots to kill a bear with a stone or metal arrow, and 5 shots to kill it with a titanium arrow.

What’s great about the bow and arrow is that you can collect your arrows again if you can find them, making them totally reusable.

Why it’s a Great Item:

It’s a ranged weapon.
You can steer clear of threats that are difficult to dodge while slaying them.
Durability is fairly high (60 uses).

2. Juicer

Making a simple smoothie.

The juicer brings a whole new level of thirst management. I only need one smoothie to last a whole large tropical island’s worth of exploring and gathering resources. Smoothies really last a long time in your thirst bar.

By the time you get a juicer, you’ll have enough ingredients to at least make the Simple Smoothie and the Coconut Beat. The Simple Smoothie consists of two coconuts, one pineapple, and one mango. And the Coconut Beat is three coconuts and one beet. Super simple and easy smoothies for the early-game.

I recommend saving your smoothies for when you’re actually exploring islands. Your raft will have fresh water available to you, so there’s no need to drink it on the raft.

Why it’s a Great Item:

It makes smoothies and juices that help keep your thirst bar full.
Some recipes use very easy-to-farm ingredients.
You can start the juicer and leave it to do other tasks while you wait for your juice to be done.

1. Cooking Pot

A midnight snack?

The cooking pot levels up your hunger management immensely. A recipe as simple as vegetable soup tops even the biggest fish in the sea. Vegetable soup is super simple; all you need is four of either beet or potato in any combination, even if it’s all potato or all beet. That hunger bonus is what you’re looking for in order to survive in Raft.

Some cooking pot recipes even replenish some thirst, such as the coconut chicken and the head broth.

Why it’s a Great Item:

Dishes made in the cooking pot give a bonus to your hunger bar.
Some dishes are very cheap to make and very satisfying to your hunger.
Most dishes are quick and easy.

It can hold up to 10 cups of water. When connected to the electric purifier, it’s like you have unlimited fresh water. It’s amazing.

At its highest efficiency, it can charge a normal battery in 140 seconds and an advanced battery in 525 seconds.

In every survival or base-building game, you know that storage is always an issue early-game. That's where scrap comes in. With just a few pieces of scrap and a few other materials, you can craft additional storage chests to keep your valuable resources safe and organized.

I recommend saving your metal ingots rather than making hinges out of them. Hinges can be found in loot boxes on randomly generated islands. As long as you look thoroughly for these loot boxes, you’ll have plenty of hinges for crafting storage in no time.

Why it’s a Great Item:

It has 20 inventory slots.

You can sort your resources.
You can paint them! Color-code them if you like.
They can be hung on the wall, so you can basically stack them on top of each other to save space.

9. Metal Fishing Rod

It’s a fighter!

Fishing is one of the best ways to gather food and resources in Raft, but it can be difficult to catch the bigger fish without a metal fishing rod. Crafting a metal fishing rod will make it much easier to catch big fish, such as salmon and catfish, to keep your hunger at bay.

Again, I recommend saving your metal ingots rather than making bolts with them. Bolts can be found in loot boxes on randomly generated islands. As long as you look thoroughly for these loot boxes, you’ll have plenty of bolts to craft storage in no time.

You can multitask by smelting items, and putting on the cooking pot and juicer, and fishing in between. You can walk around your raft while fishing. That way you can check on your smelted items or dishes while you wait for fish to take the bait.

Why it’s a Great Item:

It’s the best way to catch your food.
There is a higher chance of catching big fish with the metal fishing rod.
It’s good for 30 uses.

8. Battery Charger

The battery charger makes for a reusable and sustainable energy source.

You must find the biofuel tank blueprint before you can research the recipe. The blueprint is found on Balboa Island, on the desk of Relay Station 6.

Stores up to 4 biofuel canisters
Can be connected to the biofuel refiner and engines with fuel pipes.

You must find the steering wheel blueprint before you can research the recipe. The blueprint is found in the cockpit of Vasagatan.

It helps you quickly steer your raft in the right direction.
It can be painted to add personality to your raft.

5. Metal Detector

Found a briefcase! There must be something valuable inside it.

With a metal detector, you'll be able to locate buried treasure and other valuable resources hidden beneath the waves. You can find a variety of materials in buried treasure, from scrap to titanium ore. You can also find rare treasures that can decorate your raft, such as tiki pieces and developer paintings.

You can craft the metal detector with a battery, no matter the durability left on it. Early-game, I recommend using your dead batteries to craft the metal detector, as charging batteries takes up biofuel, which you’ll need for the engines.

You must find the metal detector blueprint before you can research the recipe. The blueprint for the metal detector can be found at Caravan Island and at the very bottom of the ocean, following the air pipe.

Why it’s a Great Item:

You can find special items such as developer paintings, toy robots, cassette tapes, and tiki pieces.
Buried treasure is the only way you can find Tiki pieces.
The metal detector won't drain the battery unless you're using it and it's in the range where it can find metal.

4. Titanium Sword

The titanium sword is a powerful weapon that will help you defend yourself against enemies. Along with the titanium arrow, it’s the most powerful weapon in the game. It only takes 5 hits with the titanium sword to slay a bear.

Before you can research the titanium sword, you must first find the titanium tools blueprint. You can find this blueprint on Utopia. This blueprint allows you to research the titanium sword, along with the titanium arrow, titanium axe, and titanium hook.

Why it’s a Great Item:

20 attack damage.

Durability of 85 uses.

It’s the most powerful weapon in the game.

How to Craft Titanium Sword:

3. Sprinkler

The sprinkler can keep your grass plots watered for your tamed animals.

Keeping your crops watered manually can be a real challenge in Raft, especially if you're trying to do five things at once. It’s just so time-consuming. A sprinkler system can automate this task, ensuring that your crops and animals stay healthy and well-watered. The sprinkler is used to water crops and grass plots.

After that, it’s the best resource you can put in the recycler, as it only needs 8 pieces to fill up the recycler. So, make sure to shear llamas whenever you come across them to gather wool.

The circuit boards are used in various advanced items such as the electric purifier, the juicer, the sprinkler, the recycler, and many more.

The first thing you’ll likely make with the circuit boards are the antenna, receiver, and recycler. The antenna and receiver are essential to progressing in the game.

The recycler is used for making trash cubes, which can be traded for resources at the trading posts.

Why copper is important:

Used to make circuit boards.
Circuit boards can make a variety of electronics.
Used to make batteries.

How to get copper:

To get copper, you can dive underwater and use a hook to gather it. They are mostly in the deeper parts of the seabed, toward the outer edges of the islands.

5. Honeycomb

Honeycomb is a resource that can be obtained naturally on evergreen islands and desert islands. It can also be farmed using beehives. It is used to craft honey and good healing salves.

Why honeycomb is important:

Used to make honey.
Honey is used to make biofuel, which is required to fuel engines.

How to get honeycomb:

To get honeycomb, you can simply collect it in the wild on evergreen and desert islands.
To farm honeycomb, you'll need to catch bees with a sweeper net. Craft a beehive and place it on your raft, with flowers growing directly adjacent to it. In 8 minutes, the honeycomb will be ready to harvest.

4. Scrap

Pieces of scrap are found on the seabed.

You can get scrap by using a hook to pick up barrels and crates that are floating in the ocean. There is a chance of scrap dropping from barrels and crates. The main way to gather scrap is by using the hook to gather it on the seabed. It is used to craft tools and weapons like the metal fishing rod, scrap hooks, and metal axes. It’s also used to make nails, which are used in so many more crafting recipes.

Nails are also needed when building your raft upwards, as they’re needed for wooden pillars, stairs, and ladders. One of my favorite items in Raft are the collection nets, which you’ll need nails to craft. Collection nets make gathering floating debris so much easier. You can float around and let the nets do the work while you go and work on something else.

Why scrap is important:

Used to craft essential farming items such as crop plots and sprinklers.
Used to craft nails which has a variety of uses from crafting recipes to building.
Used to craft simple collection nets.

Titanium ingots are also used for advanced collection nets, which make gathering floating debris so much easier as you can leave it to do its thing while you go and do something else.

To get titanium, you can trade for it with the trading posts (this is the best way).

It’s so beautiful underwater.

Seaweed is strangely a very versatile resource. It is smelted to make vine goo. The reason it’s on the top of my list is because seaweed and vine goo are used to craft oxygen bottles and flippers.

These allow players to hold their breath underwater for much longer and swim faster. It makes resource gathering underwater so much faster. You can gather more resources before the shark respawns. I believe that the more efficient your resource gathering is, the more enjoyable your gameplay will be.

Why seaweed is important:

It is used to make vine goo
Oxygen bottles and flippers make gathering resources so much faster.

Best ways to get seaweed:

To get seaweed, you'll need to dive underwater to gather it. No need for a hook; it’s super easy to swoop down and gather a bunch.

Raft has plenty of things to do and craft. Some of these recipes require animal by-products to craft them. Not only are these animal by-products used in crafting recipes, but they can also be used in the recycler and biofuel refiner. Here are the 5 most useful animal products.

5. Eggs

Look at all those chickens.

Eggs are an excellent food source, and you can use them as biofuel resources as well as an ingredient to craft healing salves.

Now, I get that healing salves aren’t so popular amongst some players because people would rather use their eggs and clay for other recipes, but once you’re far enough in the game, healing salves are so cheap, and I find myself using them a lot late-game.

Eggs by themselves restore 15 hunger. Eggs are used in the sushi recipe, which is a great way to use up excess eggs and fish. Sushi restores 50 hunger and gives a large hunger bonus of 65.

As for biofuel, it takes 3.33 eggs to make one biofuel.

How to get eggs:

Set down your grass plots and build fences around the grass plots.
Use the net launcher and net canister to catch a clucker.
Run back to your raft with the clucker in your hands and place it on your grass plots.
Make sure to water your grass plots so the grass can grow.
Eggs will be laid every 4-6 minutes as long as the cluckers have grass to eat.

4. Leather

This player is too calm for this.

Leather is used for the backpack, armor, and canteen with regards to crafting recipes. Otherwise, it’s a great recycler item. You only need to craft a backpack once, and armor lasts pretty long as long as you’re decent at dodging attacks. The canteen, however, is one item I am anxiously awaiting. Being able to hold 10 cups of water is a blessing.

There are many animals that provide leather when slain. I personally prefer hunting bears for leather, as they’re fairly easy to dodge and kill. It takes 7 hits with a machete or metal arrow to slay the bear.

It takes 6 pieces of leather to make one trash cube in the recycler. 24 pieces of leather will fill up the recycler.

How to get leather:

Kill warthogs, bears, mama bears, polar bears, hyenas, or alphas for leather.

3. Wool

Look at all those llamas.

Wool is used for the backpack and armor in regards to crafting recipes. But the true worth of wool is using it as a recycler resource. It’s by far the best recycler resource in raft. It only takes 2 wool to make one trash cube in the recycler. And 8 wool to fill up the recycler.

If you have a bunch of llamas, collecting wool is so easy. After shearing the llama’s wool, it only takes 5 minutes for them to grow their wool back to full.

How to get wool:

Set down your grass plots and build fences around the grass plots.
Use the net launcher and net canister to catch a llama.
Run back to your raft with the llama in your hands and place it on your grass plots.
Make sure to water your grass plots so the grass can grow.
Shear the wool off the llama with shears.
Wool will grow back every 5 minutes as long as the llama have grass to eat.

2. Explosive Powder

Why does it have only three teeth?

I absolutely despise these Poison-Puffers. They’re just so disturbing to look at, and it’s even worse when they’re dead. Unlike the other animal heads, poison-puffer heads can actually be made into a dish using the Head Broth recipe. But the main resource you’ll want from poison-puffers is the explosive goo.

Explosive goo is smelted to make explosive powder, which is used to make the net canister. The net canister is ammo for the net launcher. With the net launcher, you can catch and tame llamas, goats, and cluckers to farm their resources on your raft.

Poison-puffers are found in deep water. You won’t find them on shallow coral reefs. The best place for farming poison-puffers is Caravan Island. The deepest depths on Caravan Island have a bunch of poison-puffers to hunt.

How to get explosive powder:

Kill the puffer fish.
Collect the explosive goo from it.
Smelt the explosive goo in the smelter.
In 80 seconds, you will have explosive powder.

1. Honey

Careful not to get stung.

Even though honey only has a couple of uses, I put it at the top of the list because getting engines set up on the raft is so important for a smooth run.

Bees can be found on the Balboa and Caravan story islands. They can also be found on randomly generated evergreen islands and desert islands. Once you’ve caught some bees, you can start farming honeycomb to make honey.

Honey is an essential ingredient in combination with a raw food item to create biofuel in the biofuel refiner. The biofuel refiner is used to power engines. The minute I reach Balboa Island, I start farming bees for honey, so I can finally get my engines going.

How to get honey:

Catch bees with the sweeper net. You will obtain 4-5 bee jars per swarm of bees.
Use the bee jars to craft a beehive and place it on your raft.
Place small crop plots directly adjacent to beehives. Plant flowers in the small crop plots.
In 8 minutes, the bees will have honeycomb ready for harvest.
Craft honey with 6 honeycombs and 1 glass.

To get trash cubes, you need to get the recycler. It turns resources into trash cubes, which are used as currency in the trading posts.

5. Stone

Stone on the seabed.

Stone is found on the seabed, and you’ll need a hook to collect it. You can also sometimes find stones in barrels and crates that float on the water as debris.

It takes 200 pieces of stone to fill up the recycler. I know, that seems like a lot. But the reason stone made it onto this list is because there really isn’t much use for it.

I’m a completionist. Whenever I stop at an island, I don’t leave until I’ve cleared all of the resources that can be gathered on it. So, I always end up with a couple chests full of stones eventually, and I stick my excess stones in the recycler.

How it works:

A full recycler will make 4 trash cubes.
You need 200 stones to fill the recycler.
50 stones make 1 trash cube.

4. Plastic

Hook, line, and floater!

Plastic is an extremely useful resource throughout the entire game. Not only is it used for 18 different items in Raft, but it’s also a very abundant resource and a great item for the recycler.

Plastic can be retrieved by casting your hook and pulling in plastic debris, and it can be found when opening barrels and loot boxes. The best way to collect a bunch of plastic is to set up a collection system using collection nets.

Once you’ve got collection nets set up on your raft, plastics are literally going to flow in. So, don’t be afraid of using it as a recycling resource, there’s plenty more where that came from.

How it works:

A full recycler will make 4 trash cubes.
You need 120 plastic to fill the recycler.
30 plastic makes 1 trash cube.

3. Feather

We should’ve hired a scare-gull instead of a scarecrow.

I never really liked feathers. You can only do so much with them. Most of the things you craft with feathers are one-and-done; they don’t get lost, and they don’t have durability. Arrows were the only reason I kept feathers around in my storage, but even so, you can retrieve arrows after you shoot them. But then I found out that feathers can be recycled and that was such a game changer for me.

My normal strategy for collecting feathers is to kill the seagulls that land on my scarecrows and bird’s nests. Make sure the scarecrow and bird’s nests are easily accessible. That way, you won’t miss when killing the seagull. It’s a great source of drumsticks as well.

How it works:

A full recycler will make 4 trash cubes.
You need 120 feathers to fill the recycler.
30 feathers make 1 trash cube.

2. Palm Leaf

That’s a lot of palm leaves.

Palm leaves have the same value as stone when it comes to the recycler. I have three reasons why it’s so high on my list:

First, just like plastic, the palm leaves will just flow in once you have a collection system going. Second, you get palm leaves when cutting down palm trees, which are everywhere. Third, because palm leaves are so common, I always end up with such an excess, even though I frequently use them in crafting and building.

How it works:

A full recycler will make 4 trash cubes.
You need 120 palm leaves to fill the recycler.
30 palm leaves make 1 trash cube.

1. Wool

I’ve never seen a striped llama in my life, but this looks sick.

Wool is absolutely crazy for the recycler. It only takes 8 pieces to fill the entire thing up, which means you only need 2 pieces of wool to make 1 trash cube.

In regards to crafting, wool is only used for your backpack and armor. It takes a while before you have to replace your armor, so in the meantime, you can farm llama wool for the recycler.

Farming wool is by far the best way to farm trash cubes if you want quick and efficient. After you craft your backpack and armor, you’ll be building up an abundance of wool.

In Raft, wood planks are one of the most essential resources for survival. Planks are used for crafting a variety of items, including tools, weapons, and building materials. They are obtained by collecting wood from floating debris, in loot boxes, chopping trees, etc. As you progress through the game, you will need more and more planks to continue building and expanding your raft. Planks can also be used to repair damage to the raft caused by the shark. So, here are five ways you can get wood planks.

5. Crates

A crate on the top of a randomly generated island.

Crates can be found on randomly generated islands. They aren’t the most reliable source of wood, but there is wood in there, and it’s worth opening all of them as you jump from island to island.

The bigger islands always have crates, usually more than one. When exploring an island, crates can be found on the highest point of the island, in caves, and in underwater caves. Make sure to circle the island underwater just to make sure you don’t miss any underwater caves.

How it works:

Stop by every island and look for crates.
Each box has a chance of dropping metal ore.
There is a 34.6%-41% chance of getting wood from crates.

4. Hook

Gathering wood and barrels with a hook.

Everyone starts out with a plastic hook in their hands. You can throw it and gather resources with it early-game, but be careful… The plastic hook doesn’t last very long. Once you’ve gone further in the game, you can craft stronger hooks like the scrap hook and titanium hook.

This is the only way to get wood at the beginning of the game. Once you’ve gathered enough material, you can craft a stone axe to start chopping trees.

One throw equals one use of the hook. The plastic hook has 40 uses, the scrap hook has 100 uses, and the titanium hook has 200 uses. However, by the time you get to a titanium hook, you will have better ways to collect wood and won’t have to use your hook to collect resources.

Barrels also float in the debris, which always has a little bundle of resources. There is a 37.73% chance of getting wood from barrels.

How it works:

Throw the hook towards some floating debris (especially towards the wood planks).
Once the hook catches onto a resource, you can pull it in.
Try to catch more than one item per throw because once you pull in your hook, that counts as one use.

3. Large Crop Plots

Many large crop plots for a tree farm.

Large crop plots are one way you can plant and grow trees on your raft. I always start with a tree farm of at least five large crop plots. On my current run, I have 15 large crop plots growing wood for me. It’s honestly the most time-consuming method of getting wood, but I do get lots of wood this way.

It takes some effort to grow trees, as there are a few steps to take and you have to water each plot. But once you have a sprinkler system hooked up, growing trees is no effort at all.

The stone axe is good for 50 uses, the metal axe for 120 uses, and the titanium axe is good for 240 uses.

How it works:

Craft large crop plots.
Plant tree seeds in them, water them, and wait for them to grow.
Chop and repeat.

2. Chopping Trees On Islands

An abundance of trees are found on Tangaroa.

As you go from island to island, you should cut down as many trees as possible. This is a really good way to get wood early-game. But even later in the game, when you reach Balboa Island and Tangaroa, you can get a bunch of wood from those massive Story Islands.

The best island to get wood on is Tangaroa. There are more than 80 trees on the island, and after clearing them, you’ll end up with about 12 stacks of wood planks and 12 stacks of palm leaves.

The only reason it’s not at the top of my list is because of all the axes you’ll have to go through. Sometimes you don’t have the resources to craft very many axes. For reference, on Tangaroa with 80 trees and each tree taking 5 hits, you would need to bring 8 stone axes, 4 metal axes, or 2 titanium axes.

1. Collection Nets

Advanced nets all in a line.

Collection nets are an effortless and efficient way to collect wood. It saves you time because you can just leave them to collect your resources while you go and do something else. Collection nets are extremely useful for passively collecting resources without destroying your hook.

Sharks will attack the outermost blocks of your raft, so don’t place them on the outside or fortify the nets when you have metal to spare.

The best way to place your collection nets is to place two lines of nets adjacent to each other, sort of in an L-shape. This ensures the most debris collection, despite the direction you’re floating or sailing. A simple collection net holds up to 10 items, and the advanced one holds up to 15.

How it works:

Place collection nets on your raft.
Leave them to collect resources passively.
Check back every few minutes to gather whatever the nets collected.
