Beauty & The Beast Movie: 5 Fast Facts You Probably Didn’t Know

You might know the song, but do you know how the beast was brought to life?

Are you a die hard Disney fan? Bet you don’t know these five facts about how your favorite animated movie came to life. Read on to find out who played their role two times! The movie brings back everyone to their childhood. Here are five things you may have not known about 2017’s Beauty And The Beast.

5) Want a castle?

The cost to have a real castle, exactly like the one in Beauty and The Beast would cost approximately $16 million, and would take up 90 acres of land! Replacing all of the furniture, such as candles, clocks and dusters, as well as the estate included would add up to 27,548.66 in total, not including mortgage! Just imagine monthly payments for the castle! Water, heat... I wonder if Prince Adams is sitting in debt right now, considering that all of his enchanted dishware and wardrobe items have turned human again. Is the castle now empty, and how does he plan on replacing it all? Disney, we’re looking to you for answers!

4) Dancin’... on stilts?

The actor who played the beast (Stevens) wore a 40 pound prosthetic suit, with visual effect indicators that tracked his every move. Talk about futuristics. Stevens also walked around on ten inch stilts the entire time! Waltzing in stilts? Yikes!

3) He did it twice!

The actor had to play his part twice while on set. Confused? Here’s the explanation. In order to ensure the beast came to life properly, his facial expressions and body movements had to be filmed completely separate. That means, from that awe inspiring roar, to the dance in the ballroom, the performer did it twice. On ten inch heels.

4) The dress everyone wants to own...

Everyone is probably enthralled with Belle’s dress. From the flowing material, to the joy Emma Watson ( Belle) must have had from twirling in it- the dress is stunning. If you care to own the exact copy, you will be unhappy to hear that the creation of the dress cost the creators an astounding 12,000 hours to make, and the top layer consisted of 2,160 swarovski crystals, costing almost $18,000 alone! That is a hefty price to pay! The dress itself was crafted out of silk organza fabric, as well as intricate detailing such as printed tiny gold leaves. Emma Watson stunned crowds worldwide in her dress, though it is quite pricey for us common folk to get our hands on an exact replica.

1) A healthy diet

Can you imagine Luke Evans (Gaston) eating raw eggs to prepare for the role? Believe it or not, that is exactly the level of commitment the actor had! The performer even went to the lengths of buying a mirror, and telling himself how gorgeous he was every day. The actor was reportedly overjoyed to play this role, and loved being able to be so narcissistic.

On top of the casts superior acting and dedication, there was a lot of effort put into the film. Over $20 million was spent on the movie, and the money went into designing and bringing all aspects of the beast and his castle to life. The library alone has been estimated to have contained over 70,000 books. Fortunately for die hard fans, such a library does exist in Austria, and is known as the Admont Alley. The live action Beauty and The Beast hit select theaters on Thursday, March 16th, and premiers worldwide March 17th, despite a select few locations where a release has been postponed.

Be sure to head on out this weekend to watch this movie, to see the castle, the library- and of course, to relive the enchanting tale that is “old as time”. From breathtaking dance numbers, as well as the food presented to Belle, the movie is a masterpiece. Don’t miss out- this is definitely a must watch.

3 Things That Should Not Have Happened In Beauty and The Beast

However, there are three things that should not have happened in this movie.

Movie Opens To Stellar Reviews

Critics have been raving about Beauty and the Beast ever since it’s release in Europe, but there are differences that some moviegoers are not pleased about. From small plot changes to the depiction of the main characters, there are a few things that should not have happened in the movie.

Have you seen the newly released live action Beauty And The Beast? If so, you are probably very pleased, and have nothing but high praise to deliver. With that being said, here are three things that should not have happened.

Plot Changes??

First and foremost, there were many small changes to the plot that affected the development of the characters. In the original movie the beast thinks long and hard about how to win Belle over, and finally decides to give her the library, while in the 2017 adaptation, he just casually gives her the library

Belle and the Beast in the library. Belle starts to fall in love with the beast. The beast begins to fall in love with Belle.

This may seem like a small detail, however it gave the feel that the beast was truly changing and becoming more human, opposed to just handing the library to Belle. This should not have been changed.

Is the beast too scary?

The second thing that should not have happened in the movie, was the way the beast was depicted. There were many small children in the theater- I went to see it on opening night, and took my younger sister- who was terrified of the beast.

Though the movie was live action, the face of the beast seemed over the top, and that takes away from the original movie. Though the beast was supposed to look scary, the animated version made it possible to portray him as “scary” and kind at the same time- while in the 2017 adaptation it was hard to move on from his appearance. From his face, to his roar and the way he spoke in anger, I do believe the PG-13 rating of the movie was appropriate, but on the other hand, I feel that originals and live adaptations should most definitely retain the same rating.

Perhaps a PG rating would be better, though I feel that if a rating has to go from “G” to PG-13, then there should be a reevaluation of what is being done, as these types of movies are meant for a younger generation. The rating should suit the audience.

Too much focus on Lumiere

The last thing that really irked me, was the long awaited “Be Our Guest” performance. From the orchestra to the singing, I was really let down.

Lumiere sings the song solo, as opposed to an entire choir in the original movie. The singing really did not come close- and the animation of flying dishes as well as other furniture was not the best. I viewed it in 3D and was expecting some more pizazz than what I saw.

The scene was a huge let down, but the movie was bearable. In addition to this scene, Belle’s initial reaction to this was out of character, she even attacked poor Lumiere! The way Belle handled her feelings towards this way definitely off, as she was depicted as such a caring and accepting girl who loved magic and adventure, that seeing her knock a talking candle to the floor was a bit much.

All in all, Disney’s 2017 adaptation didn’t come close to the original- though it was well made, there was not nearly as much heart and emotion put into it as the original one.

Will your child be seeing the movie?

Are you one of the few parents who refuse to take your child to the highly anticipated Beauty And The Beast readaptation? If so, is it because Lefou, Gaston’s sidekick is portrayed as a homosexual character? Whether or not you plan on taking your child to the movie, read on to find out what really happened in the “gay scene” everyone is talking about.

Censorship boards want the scene cut!

After all of the hype leading up to one of the most anticipated movies of this year, there has been some negative light on a certain scene in the one and only live action Beauty And The Beast. Though there are many moments in this movie that imply that our beloved Lefou, Gaston’s comrade is gay. This is not stated directly anywhere in the film, but there are a few instances that made the censorship board in many countries quite uneasy.

Censorship boards across the world have refused to release the movie with the gay scenes, demanding it be cut before a scheduled release.

Is he really gay?

The first scene shows Lefou on horseback with his friend Gaston, and Lefou is heard trying to convince Gaston not to marry Belle, which to many people was a definite sign that something, in their eyes was “off”. The next scene that helped ignite this theory was when Gaston questioned him, asking why he hadn’t found himself a women yet, and Lefou responds saying he is too clingy- the public received this as Lefou covering up his sexuality.

What’s the big deal?

The big moment, however, that has everybody talking, was- and you might want to take a seat, that Lefou (gasp) danced with another man. Now, there are people out there who are against this, which can and should be respected- however I do feel that these scenes are a big step in the right direction- Lefou is considered Disney’s first gay character, though he was not directly introduced to us as such. However, he was received this way by the general public.

Malaysia refuses to allow release of the movie

There are many countries whose censorship boards indeed have reacted very strongly to these scenes. In fact, the release of Beauty And The Beast has been put on hold until March 30th in Malaysia, giving the censorship board some time to decide whether or not to release the film at all. The censorship board in Russia, on the other hand, has put a 16+ rating on this movie, simply because of this scene.

What should we be focusing on?

I strongly disagree with this. Malaysia’s situation regarding homosexuality has been very harsh- making homosexuality illegal as early as 1994, as well as punishment for such acts as cruel as 20+ years in prison. With that said, I feel that in such a day in age where technology and arts are so praised, all of the work falls hard, with people focusing on “the gay moment”. The fact that this moment has even been categorized is a shame.

People should be praising Emma Watson astounding acting, how the beast came to life on screen and so on. However, many people have spoken out, and there are many petitions going around in a number of countries, in an attempt to get the scene cut. Many people signing have been reported to be parents who say something along the line of “young children do not need to be traumatized by such a moment”.

Whether you personally agree with this or not, I feel everyone should make an effort to praise what really matters- the hard work and amazing effort that has been put into making a classic come to life, so we can once again enjoy “a tale as old as time.”
