With a brand new Star Wars movie set to hit theatres later this year fan frenzy is at a fever pitch over the Star Wars galaxy. Several movies and spinoffs have already been announced and with all new characters and planets to be added to the Star Wars canon we are pretty much guaranteed to see more games coming in the future. So today we’d like to take a look at the best Star Wars games from yesteryear.

10. Star Wars: The Old Republic

When Wookies and Jedi come together they are a "force," to be reckoned with.

Players are dropped in the middle of a galactic power struggle between the Jedi Order, the Galactic Republic, and the Sith who seek to destroy both groups. Spanning multiple worlds across the Star Wars galaxy players are given the choice to follow the call of either the light or dark side in the fastest ever growing MMO. The best part is the game is now free to play.

9. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

Is Starkiller unleashing the force, or a can of whoop ass?

Until Disney took over the Star Wars universe this game was actually a part of canon. Bridging the gap between episode III and IV you play as Starkiller, Darth Vader’s secret apprentice. You are tasked with hunting down the last remaining Jedi. Ultimately players ended up joining forces with the same Jedi they are tasked with hunting, planting the seeds for the future rebellion.

8. Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II

A lightsaber cuts through strom troopers like a knife through butter.

Players control Kyle Katarn as he looks to seek revenge for the death of his father and kill the dark Jedi responsible. A FPS, Dark Forces II lets players not only use blasters, but wield a light saber, and force powers through 21 levels. A solid online experience rounds this game out with 32 person multiplayer.

7. Star Wars Episode One: Racer

Episode I Racer now with 100% less terrible dialouge then the prequals.

Racer took what was arguably the best scene in Episode 1 and put players behind the controls of a pod racer. Players were able to upgrade and customize their own personal racer. Allowing racers to zip along tracks in all corners of the galaxy is what made Racer the best-selling sci-fi racing game of all time.

6. Star Wars: Tie Fighter

Darth Vader looks on in approval as his fleet takes off.

Tie Fighter is a space flight simulator that starts where Episode IV left off. Players assume the role of an imperial pilot fighting in battles across the galaxy against the rebellion and other threats to the empire. Tie fighter was heralded not only for gameplay improvements over its predecessor, but for showing the Empire had more tangible motives than, “they’re evil.”

5. Star Wars: Empire at War

Empire at War lets you control your troops all across the galaxy.

Empire at War lets players choose between fighting for the newly formed Rebel Alliance or the Empire during the battles and events leading up to the creation of the Death Star in Episode IV. The only Star Wars RTS to make the list for good reason, Empire at war focuses on troop development, planetary control, and resource mining.

A lightsaber is all a man needs when exploring the galaxy.

Galaxies finally gave Star Wars fans everything they had always wanted. A chance to play around in a galaxy far far away without limitations. This MMO lets you live, and fully immerse yourself, in the Star Wars universe

3. X-wing Vs Tie Fighter

Is their anything more impressive then a fleet of star destroyers?

With no story mode to speak of this this game was all about the multiplayer. Up to eight players could play head to head or cooperate with each other to achieve their mission. While an expansion pack was added that included a storyline this game was originally all about the dogfight.

2. Star Wars: Battlefront II

The safest place in a battle is ALWAYS behind the AT-ST

Battlefront II drops players in the midst of some of the biggest battles for galactic power from both the original trilogy and prequels. Players get to control their favorite heroes and villains across several planets both on the ground and the space above. Battlefront II was so well received that ten years later we are finally seeing another entry in the series thanks to clamoring from the fan boys.

It’s no wonder KOTOR places number one on a list of best Star Wars games. A game that focuses on character building and story development this has been a fan favorite for years. Players try to discover their forgotten past while chasing down antagonist former Jedi Darth Malak. In doing so they discover their jaded past in a twist so tantalizing we won’t ruin it for the odd man out who hasn’t played it.
