Even though it has been nearly four years since the release of Batman: Arkham Knight, the game, and the franchise are still widely discussed, especially with the recent rumors of a new installment. In this article, I will examine 10 cool wallpapers that spawned from what was thought to be the finale of the Arkham series, along with some tidbits about what’s featured in the image. If you’re bored with your current wallpaper and are seeking a new one that features Batman, his allies, or his world, or you want to learn facts about the characters, check these out:

1. Batman and his allies

Batman, Robin and Nightwing stand on a rooftop, ready for battle.

Despite what most of the film incarnations would lead you to believe, Batman does not always work alone. Though he does not always work well with them, he has gathered a menagerie of allies over the eight decades since his inception.

This image from Batman: Arkham Knight showcases the Arkham universe incarnation of the Bat-Family, which is considerably smaller in number than the comic version. Displayed in the image are Batman, with Dick Grayson, the first Robin, who grew up to become Nightwing; and Tim Drake, the third Robin, who was smart enough to deduce the Dynamic Duo’s identities and convince Batman that he needed a Robin, even after the death of Jason Todd.

2. Batgirl

Batgirl: crouched, alone, and ready for battle.

Left out of the boys club in the previous image, Batgirl still has a presence in Arkham Knight. In the main story, she is Oracle, the wheelchair-bound tech-whiz that was ripped off to create Felicity on Arrow.

Batgirl is playable in Arkham Knight in both the AR challenges and the DLC A Matter of Family, where she teams up with Tim Drake to rescue her father from the Joker- though she actually does most of the work herself. In this image, she stands (or crouches) alone, ready to kick some ass, showing that though she’ll work with the men of the Bat-Family, she doesn’t need them watching her back.

3. Batman

Batman, the Dark Guardian of Gotham.

This wallpaper shows off the Arkham Knight Batsuit, showcasing the Dark Knight in all his gliding glory.. It also showcases the state of Gotham in Arkham Knight.

It also contrasts the first wallpaper, where he has his allies with him. Despite their presence in the game, Batman does spend most of his time trying to keep them away from the situation in Gotham. Though he works better with allies, Batman would rather fly solo than admit that he needs help.

4. The Batmobile

The Batmobile, now upgraded with more weapons than ever

Though it made appearances in the first two games in the Arkham series, Arkham Knight finally lets the player drive the Batmobile, which has been upgraded from the more traditional vehicle seen in the first two games to a beast of a tank.
It’s lucky the city has been abandoned, because this thing is hard to control, and would likely mow over any civilians in its way. The best thing about the Batmobile’s inclusion is how easy it makes it to get around the city. The worst: Tank battles.

5. The Arkham Knight

The Arkham Knight is not alone. He's got a heavily-armed militia on his side.

The Arkham Knight, along with Scarecrow is the main villain of Arkham Knight (who would’ve guessed? It’s in the title). Though his identity wasn’t much of a surprise to many people, the backstory provided is an interesting twist on the classic A Death in the Family arc.

In this universe, Jason Todd never died, but was kept alive, and twisted into becoming a militia leader. His vendetta against Batman is less about not killing the Joker and more about his misconceived notion that Bruce left him to die. This image shows off the armored Arkham Knight look, as well as the force he brings with him- a force to be reckoned with.

6. BvS

Tell me, do you bleed? You will

Opinions vary on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (to say the least), but I will fight anyone that says it does not have the best onscreen Batsuit. Say goodbye to clunky armor, rubber, and/or nipples.

The suit Ben Affleck wore in his debut was straight off the page grey-and-black, with a big bat emblem that you can actually see (looking at you, Nolan).

This wallpaper showcases the game’s rendering of the suit, which I’ve used for my entire playthrough of the game instead of the default suit.

7. The Red Hood

When the Joker wore this number, it was more flashy maitre'd than motorcycle fetish. Kids today, huh?

Unlike Batman and most of his allies, Jason Todd is not afraid to use lethal force. In the Post-Game, he also embraces his comic identity as the Red Hood, abandoning the armor of the Arkham Knight for a more traditional look. This wallpaper shows off the new look and the lethal force that the Red Hood extends to his enemies.

8. The Man Wonder?

Tim Drake, the third Robin is the closest Batman has to an equal.

Though I really like the suit Robin wears in Arkham Knight, I’m not the biggest fan of the face sculpt, because it often makes Tim look like he’s in his thirties. Though it’s never said outright how old he’s supposed to be, he’s referred to as a “boy” in Arkham City, Arkham Knight only takes place nine months later. If I had to guess, I’d say he’s somewhere in his twenties. Despite this inconsistency, Robin is ready to take on Gotham’s scum.

9. Nightwing

Nightwing. The First Robin. Defender of Blüdhaven

After leaving Batman, Dick Grayson struck out on his own as Nightwing, eventually becoming the protector of his own city, Blüdhaven. In Arkham Knight, he joins Batman on a series of missions to help take down the Penguin.

At the same time, he kind of gets the short straw, as, for some reason, Barbara Gordon is about to marry Tim Drake, when she is traditionally paired romantically with Dick. Either way, this Nightwing wallpaper showcases him armed with electrified escrima sticks, his weapon of choice, posed and ready to take down the baddies

1. Batman: Arkham Knight Announce Trailer – “Father to Son”

Released: 4th March, 2014

Youtube Views: 11.4 million and counting

“Gotham, this is your only warning. Abandon the city, or I will unleash your greatest fears.” These words are heard as the trailer opens into a crowd of people seen running and possibly abandoning the city. Afterwards, we revisit the most memorable location in the series, The Batcave.

Bruce Wayne returns.

We hear the voice of Thomas Wayne, Bruce Wayne’s father, who requests Bruce Wayne to carry on his legacy by protecting the city, and using the wealth that he has passed on to him for good causes. Throughout the conversation we see a new and improved Batmobile, alongside close-up shots of the Bat gear.

Batman, as determined as ever, pursues after the criminals to protect Gotham city, as his father requested. The trailer cuts off, as Batman is seen jumping into the Batmobile to go after Two-Face.

Overall, everything looks impressive, and the game looks very promising.

2. Batman: Arkham Knight - Be the Batman Trailer

Released: 20th May, 2015

Youtube Views: 7.4 million and counting

A few scenes of Arkham crime and life events are shown throughout this trailer. As it progresses, the words ‘Be Selfless’, ‘Be Determined’, ‘Be Courageous’, ‘Be Feared’, and lastly – ‘Be The Batman’ are shown.

In the trailer we get to see some impressive action-packed gameplay.

3. Batman: Arkham Knight Trailer - “Gotham is Mine”

Released: 25th February, 2015

This trailer shows some of the villains that Batman will face. It opens with Poison Ivy, one of the villains, saying how there was a plan to take over Gotham, over Batman’s dead body.

Crime is widespread in Gotham City

The rest of the trailer portrays the execution of the plan with criminals taking over Gotham, but Batman fights against them, despite the odds.

4. Batman: Arkham Knight Trailer - “All Who Follow You”

Released: 27th April, 2015

As the Bat signal is lit up in the sky, Gotham city is seen in never ending crime. Batman seems to be defeated.

But Batman is not alone. He rises again with fellow superheroes and returns to fight against the evil that has plagued Gotham City.

The trailer shows that you will not be fighting alone, and you will have friends to help you. This new addition is excellent, as throughout the ealier games Batman was always fighting alone.

5. Batman: Arkham Knight Gameplay Trailer – “Evening The Odds”

Released: 21st May, 2014

Similar to the announce trailer, we hear the same words spoken out with images of Gotham city. We see the Bat signal light up in the sky with the monologue ‘A city of fear… Rises!’

As before, we see a close-up of Batman’s gear, followed by some gruesome shots of Gotham’s crime. ‘What are you doing?’ Batman was asked. ‘Evening the odds’ is the answer as he moves forwards with the Batmobile.

Throughout the rest of the trailer, we see glimpses of gameplay, ending with the words ‘There is no savior. No more hope. No more Batman.’ as a shot is fired into his head.

The rest remains unknown. A dark side of the game is revealed, and defeat might be faced, which adds flavor to the series.

6. Batman: Arkham Knight - Ace Chemicals Infiltration Trailer: Part 1

Released: 24th November, 2014

Batman infiltrates the Ace Chemical plant that has been taken over by Scarecrow and an army of criminals.

Scarecrow plans to use the Ace Chemicals plant to take over Gotham City.

The Arkham Knight looks pretty solid in his armor and intends to stop Batman from saving Gotham City

7. Batman: Arkham Knight - Batmobile Battle Mode Reveal

Released: 3rd June, 2014

The roaring sound of the Batmobile is heard as it speeds through, slowing down with an overview of its features and gear.

In its arsenal is the 60mm cannon, a Vulcan armor-piercing gun, missile barrage and a riot-suppressor which fires non-lethal slam rounds.

Truly the weaponry required for fighting crime. The new and improved Batmobile looks great, as we see Batman using it to fight crime better than ever.

8. Batman: Arkham Knight - Harley Quinn Trailer

As the trailer opens, we see a familiar face - Harley Quinn - stepping to the scene. For those unfamiliar, Harley Quinn is the accomplice and girlfriend of Joker.

But as we watch the trailer further, we see something we haven’t seen before – you can now play as Harley Quinn – as a preorder bonus of the game in an exclusive mission. The trailer then closes with a close-up shot of Harley Quinn.

For the first time we will be able to play as a villain in the series, and it is amazing.

9. Batman: Arkham Knight - Ace Chemicals Infiltration Trailer: Part 2

Released: 1st December, 2014

Continuing directly from where Part 1 left off, the events quickly turn into scenes of explosive action, as Ace Chemicals focus on neutralizing their new threat.

10. Batman: Arkham Knight - Ace Chemicals Infiltration Trailer: Part 3

Released: 6th December, 2014

Moving into yet another explosive action-packed trailer, Batman continues to battle criminals in his way. In this trailer, Batman fights his way to Scarecrow and tries to him from releasing the fear gas.

The Arkham Knight tries to stop Batman however, and a battle ensues.

Scarecrow has already released the fear gas. The gas causes irrational fear in its victims' minds, driving them insane.

At the end of the trailer, we see the world around Batman crumbling into chaos and madness, as he jumps into the Batmobile to battle a colossal foe.

Family Matters

Since the reveal trailer, Rocksteady Studios has made it very clear that this Batman game will have one strong theme that drives it: Family.

As his deceased father, Thomas Wayne, narrates what his wishes are for his son, Bruce Wayne prepares to face the streets as our Dark Knight. The villains have emptied Gotham City and have banded together under Scarecrow to finally end Batman. Helping Scarecrow achieve this is the Arkham Knight, a mysterious newcomer who boasts the ability to kill Batman. But Bruce isn’t alone. At his side are Catwoman, Nightwing, Robin, Oracle, and his allies in the GCPD; the family he’s built up over the years of crime fighting.

Rocksteady promises to end their Arkham franchise with a bang. So with a fond farewell to this series, I present to you 5 facts you should know about Arkham Knight.

1. Gotham City is 5x the size of Arkham City

Over the course of these last few games, our world has been growing larger. From the humble beginnings in Arkham Asylum to the now dizzying landscape of Gotham City, we as fans are about to jump into a large swimming pool of urban super hero-ing.

Rocksteady Studios’ marketing manager Guy Perkins has told IGN about that the larger map is the result of switching from linear gameplay to an open world. The addition of the grappling hook and the Batmobile to the gliding mechanics from the previous games will allow players to effectively turn Gotham City into their own personal jungle gym.

2. The game has a slew of DLC that changes based on where you pre-ordered your copy

Arkham Knight is looking like a phenomenal game. But your experiences may differ based on where you got your copy from. Here’s a useful to help you navigate through where you should get your game. Rocksteady Studios has not released an official statement yet if there will be a way to obtain all of the DLC later in the future.

3. The voice actors behind this game are amazing!

Did you know that the same person who voiced Timmy Turner from Fairlyodd Parents, Bubbles from the Powerpuff Girls, Rikku from Final Fantasy X and Raven from Teen Titans also voices Harley Quinn? Tara Strong has won numerous awards for her stellar voice work and it’s great to know she’ll reprising her role as Harley Quinn. Joining her is Troy Baker (https://twitter.com/troybakerva), best known for his role as Booker DeWitt from Bioshock Infinite and the Joker from Arkham Origins, voicing Harvey Dent (Two Face) and according to IMDB, the Arkham Knight. Also on board is the legendary Kevin Conroy who reprises his role as the voice of Batman. Conroy has been voicing Batman for 23 years!

4. This game will feature a character switch system

Rocksteady games dubs this system “Dual Play.” It will allow players to switch between their favorite heroes and, as the trailers suggest, pull off tag-team moves between the two characters. So far, the only confirmed playable characters are Batman, Robin, Nightwing and Catwoman. Harley Quinn, Red Hood and Batgirl are only playable through DLC.

Unfortunately for fans that want to share the experience of being the Dark Knight, Rockstead Studios has confirmed that this will be a single player game only; there will be no cooperative play. Despite that minor flaw, Arkham Knight is still shaping up to be one of 2015’s best blockbuster games.

5. The Arkham Knight

The Arkham Knight is a brand new villain to the Batman mythos. He wears a suit of armor similar to Batman’s and has been shown wielding two pistols as his weapon of choice. In recent trailers, the Arkham Knight has been showing mocking Batman and wanting vengeance on him for some reason. He has also been shown to possess a strange amount of knowledge regarding Batman’s armor and tactics. Fans have speculated that this person is former-Robin Jason Todd, also known as the Red Hood. Although, a Red Hood DLC has been announced for Gamestop pre-orders, it could be that those DLC story missions will act as an origin story to how the Red Hood becomes the Arkham Knight.

In fact, that theory would also explain why the Arkham Knight’s army of mercenaries all have a consistent theme of red (some of them even wear red hoods).

In this writer’s opinion, it would make sense for Jason to return to Gotham City, unite all of Batman’s enemies in one place so he can kill them all/keep their crimes in check, and then get vengeance on Batman for failing to save him. It would also help explain why Scarecrow would want to empty Gotham City of all its citizens first since Jason still cares about protecting innocent bystanders; he just doesn’t care about the lives of criminals..

While this theory seems completely plausible, the only way to know for sure at this point is to wait patiently for the game’s release.
