The stand-out mechanic of this flashy game is the turn-based combat that really makes it stand out from the rest in the genre. Though it can be jarring at first, it really improves and becomes a satisfying system as the game progresses. This can also be said for the story, as all of this game's parts appear simpler than they actually are at first. Aside from its excellent fighting mechanics, which progressively get better and better as the story evolves, Arkham Knight tells the story of the final chapter in this trilogy. It’s dark, gritty, and all the things needed to make a classic Batman tale. However, the last third of the story does falter a tiny bit, stopping it from being the best in the series. Still, the variety of the combat cannot be understated, and you’ll be playing the bonus challenge levels to fully test your abilities. The Batmobile can be overused in some sections as well but is still an excellent addition that the fans wanted for ages. On top of that, you get the whole of Gotham to traverse with it.

Set in the semi-open-world of Arkham, where the city has been divided between the criminals and the civilians, Batman finds himself battling a huge roster of his most well-known villains. Considering how short the game is, and how many different side stories and characters it throws at you, it’s remarkable how the game manages all of it so well.

The story is interesting and some of the most original Batman content in a while, and is backed up with hours and hours of fun, addicting gameplay. You gradually unlock new gadgets as the game progresses, meaning that the over-the-top combat gets more and more interesting throughout the game. The enemy variety is also top-notch, and some of the later battles will truly test your reflexes. All of this, wrapped up in a beautiful looking game that holds up, and excellent writing and voice acting from veterans in the industry.

Ok, not all of us have a beast of a gaming PC but that doesn’t mean you won’t get to enjoy Batman Arkham Knight! You can still play the game even if you have a budget gaming PC. The minimum requirements for Batman Arkham Knight are:

Batman Arkham Knight is unlike others of this series; it is an amazing game with multiple endings that will keep you stuck to your screen till you find them all! Usually, if you play games with multiple endings, you’ll notice that it gets kind of repetitive towards the end, but not with Arkham Knight! The content of this game is amazing, and it keeps the player intrigued till the very end. Let’s take a look at the best Arkham Knight endings you can play for.
There are a total of 3 endings for Batman Arkham Knight. Let’s go in complete detail of each ending.

Story Mode Ending

This is the standard ending all gamers must have witnessed, mainly because who the heck likes collecting Riddler trophies and puzzles without completing the story first? After apprehending a few of Gotham’s most wanted, you go on to stop the scarecrow and, in the process, you end up revealing to the world that Bruce Wayne is the Batman.
You end up defeating scarecrow and keeping Gotham safe, but now the world knows the real identity of Batman! Reporters accumulate outside the Wayne manor and Batman instructs Alfred to initiate the Knightfall protocol as soon as Batman is done cleaning up the mess. The game doesn’t end there though, you will have to apprehend Gotham’s Most Wanted to initiate the Project Knightfall ending.

If you apprehend 7 of Gotham’s most wanted (either before or after the final cutscene), Batman will take off his cowl and retire as the Batman. Outside the Wayne Manor are reporters waiting to interview Bruce Wayne as he has been exposed to be the Batman! But to everyone’s surprise, the Wayne Manor explodes, by none other than Alfred!
This is the incomplete project Knightfall ending! If you remember from the game; there are 11 suspects to be apprehended in Batman Arkham knight.

Secret Ending

By performing all of the extra tasks in the game, you can unlock the secret ending which is also known as the complete project Knightfall ending. If you apprehend all of the suspects and perform all of the side quests in the game, you will finally get the marker for the last and final mission in Batman Arkham Knight. You have to get on top of the GCPD building where the Bat signal is located and initiate project Knightfall just like the last ending. But this time the game doesn’t end with Wayne Manor’s explosion! After Batman takes off his cowl and Alfred blows up the Wayne Manor, we can see that Gordon has been promoted from Commissioner of the GCPD to Mayor.
Furthermore, Barbara Gordon (Batgirl) marries Tim Drake. Finally, we see a family similar to Bruce and his parents leaving the opera when a thief corners them but this time around a mysterious figure jumps on the thief and the fear makes the criminal run away.
Basically, even though Batman has gone, the fear of the Bat still embodies the criminals in Gotham, so his job is finally complete!

I, as a gamer, always look forward to a good DLC that can provide an alternative or continual perspective of the main story. Batman Arkham series has always gotten numerous DLCs for each game that let you control other characters of the Arkham universe, heroes, or villains.
Batman Arkham Knight is no exception to DLCs, it has received numerous DLCs from when it was released in 2015. Let’s rank them from worst to best.

5. Harley Quinn DLC pack

The Harley Quinn episode in the Harley Quinn DLC pack is not the best Arkham Knight DLC. Although in the past, Harley Quinn’s DLCs were pretty great in other Batman Arkham Series games, it just doesn’t make sense in Arkham Knight. The joker is gone, and Harley Quinn has no use of being in the game.
Other than that, the DLC is pretty short, and the mechanics are sloppy. The combat of Harley Quinn feels like someone copied her character on the Dark Knight’s code.

5. Ballistic Armor

You won’t feel the need to upgrade the cannon early on in the game because there’s not much use of it in the beginning, just like the ballistic armor. But as you progress, you’ll see that many enemy tanks can only be blown by the 60mm cannon.

Get your bounty and get out of there: There's a monster loose, it's your job to kill it. Once you do, other hunters will be on your trail, so get out as quickly as possible.

Death is cruel, as dying will strip you of your weapons, gear, and character while keeping your experience gain intact. Keep your head on a swivel and claim your bounty.

A cruel and dark world: It's a dark world out there. Never let your guard down, your progress is at stake.

Perform elaborate puzzles, survive hordes of zombies, and avoid the deadly Nemesis experiment. Watch your ammo though you only have a limited amount.

You can hide if you want. It won't help: Similar to Mr. X from the Resident Evil 2 remake, Nemesis will hunt you down until you're dead. Better watch yourself, and watch that ammo.

Is Arkham Knight really as Bad as People Say?

Many Pc Gamers won`t want to play this game and will advise you not to even try the game because it is a disaster. Only because it had a disastrous PC port or because their favorite reviewers said the game was so bad that it wasn`t even worth playing.

But what is the truth? Is Batman Arkham Knight really that bad? Does it deserve all the hate? Let`s embark on our journey to find out if the game is really as bad as people say, in this Batman Arkham Knight Review of 2016.

Storyline

*Major Spoilers Ahead

I will save Gotham City

Nine months after Joker`s death, crime rates in Gotham have declined, but Batman anticipates a new threat. He is proven right when Scarecrow forces the people to evacuate Gotham city by threatening the release of his new fear toxin. All the criminals have joined Scarecrow`s army except for Poison Ivy. Batman saves her from Scarecrow`s imprisonment, to enlist her help in defeating Scarecrow.

Meanwhile, Oracle pinpoints Ace Chemicals as Scarecrow`s hideout. Batman assaults the hideout and confronts the Arkham Knight’s thugs. He then finds out that the Ace Chemicals has been transformed into a toxic time bomb. Scarecrow escapes but exposes batman to the toxic gas while Oracle is kidnapped by Scarecrow`s thugs.

Before dying, Joker had injected his blood into 5 people, to give birth to new jokers and continue the legacy of Joker. Batman had found 4 of these people. And after being exposed to the fear toxin, finds out that he is actually the 5th victim.

Meanwhile, Scarecrow manages to form a Cloudburst that will cover the whole city in fear toxin. Batman sets out to destroy the Cloudburst. Seeing an opportunity, Harley Quinn seizes Batman’s base along with her goons in order to rescue the new potential jokers.

Batman manages to find Oracle in Scarecrow`s hideout, but she has been exposed to the fear toxin and shoots herself and seemingly dies. Batman blames himself for Oracle’s death and returns to the bat cave to find Harley Quinn.

After defeating Harley and her gang of thugs, Batman sets out to destroy the Cloudburst, but it’s too late. The mysterious villain, Arkham Knight activates the Cloudburst, covering Gotham in fear toxin.

Batman asks Poison Ivy to clear the toxin, which she does but at the cost of her own life.

After the Cloudburst is destroyed, Batman confronts Arkham Knight, only to find that he is actually Jason Todd, the former Robin who was apparently murdered by Joker but was actually left alive and traumatized by torture. Batman offers to save Todd, but he escapes.

Batman and Officer Gordon confronts Scarecrow, and discovers that Oracle is still alive. Batman saves Oracle but in the process Scarecrow kidnaps Gordon. Using the remaining militia of criminal thugs, Scarecrow attacks Batman`s base and kidnaps Robin. And due to excessive fear toxin exposure, Joker starts to take over batman`s mind.

To save Gordon and Robin, Batman surrenders to Scarecrow, who then reveals Batman`s identity to the whole world and injects Batman with heavy amounts of fear toxin. Thus, the struggle for control starts, in Batman`s mind, between Joker and Batman. Batman triumphs and Joker is caged in Batman`s mind to be forgotten forever. At the same time, Todd arrives and saves Batman and injects Scarecrow with his own fear toxin.

Although the threat to Gotham city has been prevented, the true face of Batman has been revealed and Batman must trigger the “Knightfall” protocol to erase his face from everyone`s minds.

Story

“You can`t kill me. I am the Joker”

When you hear these words start off the story, you know something fantastic is coming your way. The story starts with an amazing display of joker dying and it is one of the best opening sequences we have seen in a long time. If you`ve read the whole story above, you`ll know Batman Arkham Knight has a pretty fantastic story. There are quite a few twists in the story. And the sudden changes in the story keep players on the edge.

The story emphasizes heavily on the teaming up of Batman villains, but keeps the spotlight basically on Scarecrow and the Arkham Knight. While mostly forgetting about Penguin and Two Face. The fact that many of the main villains of the batman franchise are forgotten is the only thing that can be a disappointment in the story of Batman Arkham Knight.

Apart from that, the characters are well developed and the dialogues are beautifully written and narrated. The story has a fast pace and compels you to uncover the whole plot.

Graphics

“Gotham is mine to protect”

It is a sin for any next gen game to have bad graphics. And Arkham Knight stays away from such a sin. The game delivers what was promised in the graphics department, the graphics are some of the best looking in any game. From the design of the Batmobile to the Batsuit, almost everything looks spectacular.

Although, I would love a day night cycle, the dark, gloomy, night environment does suit a Batman game and brings the best out of it. The sky is also beautifully portrayed, with dynamic clouds and a changing weather system. In short, the world is a spectacle to behold.

Gameplay

Street thugs are no match for Batman

The gameplay department was the one which made the game receive bad reviews and all the hate from PC gamers. Not that the gameplay itself was flawed or bad, it was just that the game had one of the worst PC ports ever.

If we talk about the core gameplay, it is quite well done. Combat is fluid, with smooth transitions between combos. Driving mechanics of the batmobile are quite polished. From the grappling hook to Batman`s flying mechanics, everything is up to the mark.

But what destroys the gameplay, are the bugs. Rocksteady, instead of porting the game to PC themselves, decided to hire a 5 man team to port the game to PC. The result being a disastrous port which was almost unplayable when it first launched.

The combat mechanics are fluid, but the constant stutters and framerate drops tend to make the combat tedious and un-enjoyable. The driving may be fluid, but it becomes quite annoying when you can`t hit a target due to constant stuttering of the game. These problems, though, are only present on the PC port.

I also dislike the fact that the gameplay heavily relies on the batmobile. From normal street fights to boss battles, most of them are fought in the batmobile. This can become quite annoying.

Thankfully most of the bugs have been dealt with by fixes and patches. But we can`t just let this game breaking mistake slide by.

Main Characters

The three heroes

The main character of “Batman Arkham Knight” is, yes you guessed it right, “Batman”. No one needs an introduction to Batman. But we will judge the character development as if we played any batman game for the first time, and don`t know who batman is.

Character progression and development in the game is quite good. The characters are developed using conflicts among different personalities which gives a unique aspect to the story. Character deaths are dramatic and adds frosting on the cake.

Villain character progression is also quite good. Especially Arkham Knight, whose character adds a whole new aspect to the game. The mysteries surrounding Arkham Knight do remain mysterious until the last moment. I do, however, dislike the fact that some of the major villains in the Batman franchise, like Penguin and Two Face, had too little screen time or were left out completely. They had little to no impact on the story.

The dialogues are generally well written and narrated. And the voices of each character are well suited and overall add depth to the character.

Sound Effects

Batman vs Arkham Knight

The soundtrack of the game is decent at best. It tends to have some intensity in a few bland scenes. But nothing epic. As it was a batman game, everyone had high hopes for the soundtrack, as previous titles had proven themselves up to the mark. But Batman Arkham Knight just doesn`t make the cut, Not only because it doesn`t create the feeling of excitement but it also lacks the enticing nature of the music of the previous titles.

The action sequences do have a bit better soundtrack than other areas of the game. But most of the music is just too bland for my liking.

The World

Justice will be served

Gotham is bigger, better and more beautiful than ever. But it is also a lot quieter and I say this in a good as well as a bad way. The city is evacuated at the start of the game. So there are hardly any civilians in the city. This gives Gotham a quiet and gloomy character, just perfect for any Batman game.

But as there are no civilians, the NPCs are mostly rogues or criminals roaming the streets. You rarely interact with these criminals. You might hear a scream or a call to run from any criminal after seeing Batman, but that’s it.

This makes the world in Batman Arkham Knight feel empty. Sure, there are quite a few side quests in the game which increases your interaction with these criminals but only a few of them are worth completing. Most of the time, you`ll just stick to the main story and just ignore the side quests.

Price

“Can you really kill me, Batman?”

The game currently retails for 29.99$ on steam. Along with another version for 49.99$ which includes the season pass. I think 30$ for a game this good is a steal. But if you wait for the right time you can get the game in steam sale for as low as 15$.

50$ is just not worth it, even if it includes the season pass. I don`t mean to say the game isn`t worth 50 or 60$. But the bugs in the game still aren`t smashed completely, and to pay full price for such a game is not wise.

Overall Score

The Arkham Knight: “Batman dies today”

This game receives an overall score of 8.4. It may have got 9 if it wasn`t for the bugs in the gameplay and the not so compelling sound track. Apart from that the game has a mind blowing storyline, awesome graphics and great gameplay.

6. Batman: Arkham Asylum

Batman: Arkham Asylum scores at Number 6 on our list because of its unique storyline, its utilization of the puzzle system, and its freeflow combat system. This nightmare-fueled narrative begins when Batman accompanies the Joker to Arkham Asylum. Once inside, the Joker escapes and reveals that he’s sprung a trap for Batman—one that involves kidnapping Commissioner Gordon and threatening to detonate numerous bombs around Gotham City if anyone attempts to enter the asylum. As Batman, your mission is to save Commissioner Gordon while taking out as many of Gotham City’s villains as possible. If getting to defeat many of the canonical villains isn’t exciting enough, you’ll also have the opportunity to face off against Scarecrow, who uses his fear toxin to make Batman hallucinate some… pretty disturbing things.

Using a mix of direct combat and stealth, as well as Batman’s usual roundup of gadgets, you’ll travel deep into the asylum, defeating shirtless, steroid-fueled prisoners. Your index finger will definitely get a workout as you punch, kick, and chop your way through the enemies, scoring combos, regaining health, and earning EXP with each kill. Probably one of the most interesting features of the game is Batman’s “Detective Vision,” which players must utilize in order to solve some of the game’s puzzles. The addition of “Detective Vision” not only gives this game a new dimension, but it also gives your index finger a break from furiously clicking your mouse.

Many of Gotham City’s ICP fans end up in Arkham Asylum.

If you’ve already played this game and you’re thinking about playing it again, look for the Game of the Year version because it can be played in 3D on any 2D television. Just pick up a pair of anaglyph 3D glasses to experience all the spooky, action-packed goodness in 3D.

5. Batman: A Telltale Series

Number 5 on our list is Batman: A Telltale Series, coming out in September of this year. This Batman game ranks at 5 on our list because players will play half the game as Batman and half the game as Bruce Wayne. Unlike other Batman games, this one takes place just after Bruce Wayne decides to become Batman, allowing players to act freely since the game isn’t tied to any established storyline. The game will contain 5 episodes, the first of which will be released in September and the last in December. While other Batman titles have relied on making the environment as realistic as possible, Batman: A Telltale Series will move away from photorealism and instead rely on comic book style art.

Is he saving Catwoman’s life or dropping her from the 20^th storey? You decide.

Playing as both Bruce Wayne and Batman is exciting mainly because Bruce Wayne’s decisions during the day could potentially affect the types of activities that occur in Gotham City at night. Similarly, decisions players make as Batman may affect how things operate in Gotham during the day. Batman: A Telltale Series will likely have a high replay value because different decisions will affect the direction of the overall storyline.

Regardless of your decisions, Bruce Wayne will still have a lot of issues to deal with.

Titled the “Best Fighting Game” in 2013, Injustice: Gods Among Us is a multiplayer fighting game that was the highest selling title in both the U.S.A. and the U.K. during its month of release. This game comes in at number 4 on our list not only because of its mechanics, but also because of its very involved plotline. The storyline pits Batman and Superman against each other after Superman becomes a tyrannical leader and establishes a new world order. To bring peace, Batman rounds up his own army and clashes forces with some of DC Comics’ greatest heroes and villains. Sounds like the typical plot to any fighting game, but this story has more twists and turns than a hunchback with scoliosis.

Let’s just take a moment to appreciate Wonder Woman’s straight spine.

Aside from the impressive lineup of playable characters, there are a number of non-playable characters that appear in various arenas. These characters (ranging from Scarecrow in Arkham Asylum to Darkseid in the Hall of Justice) appear as hazards on the battlefield, adding a level of difficulty to certain arenas. Interactive and transitional elements add more excitement to each stage, as players can use certain objects in an arena to damage their opponent (like throwing a car at someone). The clash system adds another unique dimension to the game. In this system, players secretly bet portions of their “super meter” in an attempt to instantly win the clash—an ideal system if you’re fighting against the “hit and run away” type of player.

You’ll never win a fight against someone who accessorizes with a noose.

If you haven’t played this game yet, pick up a copy today. The sequel, Injustice 2, was recently announced in June 2016 and has a tentative release date of 2017.

3. Batman: Arkham City – Game of the Year Edition

Number 3 on our list is Batman: Arkham City – Game of the Year Edition. We’ve chosen the Game of the Year version because it not only extends the original game by about two hours, but it also includes seven new maps to explore, three new playable characters (Catwoman, Robin, and Nightwing), and a number of different skins for Batman, Catwoman, Robin, and Nightwing. The game itself begins when Bruce Wayne winds up imprisoned in Gotham City’s new prison, Arkham City. Hugo Strange, the villain behind Wayne’s imprisonment, is after something called “Protocol 10” and it’s your job to stop him. Throughout your journey in Arkham City, you’ll come across a number of familiar faces, including the Riddler, whose solvable riddles make up a good portion of the game’s side quests.

“Sure, I’m Batman, but my real dream was to become the ultimate riddle solver.”

Like Batman: Arkham Asylum, players will make use of the freeflow combat system as well as things like “Detective Vision” to fight enemies, solve puzzles, and progress through the game. Since this game is the second in the Arkham series, many of Batman’s gadgets and combat mechanics have been updated to improve the overall game play experience. Unlike Arkham Asylum, Batman can catch objects thrown at him, attack while gliding, and counter multiple hits at once. There are also a number of new gadgets to look forward to, such as smoke bombs and a REC stun gun.

Batman: Arkham City was also the winner of several awards, including Best Action Game, Best Adventure Game, and, of course, Game of the Year. You’ll definitely want to explore all the spooky nooks and crannies in Gotham’s sprawling prison, Arkham City.

2. Batman: Arkham Origins

Batman: Arkham Origins, the third game in the Arkham series, stirs up the franchise with a new multiplayer mode. What makes Origins number 2 on our list? The storyline’s artful comparison of the Joker and Batman’s personalities, which culminates with the unanswerable question: is Batman doing more harm than good? Although Origins was released after Arkham Asylum, the game takes place 5 years before those events. The game begins on Christmas Eve with Batman attempting to stop a jailbreak at Blackgate Penitentiary. After failing to stop Black Mask’s escape, Batman discovers a $50 million bounty on his head, which has attracted the attention of some pretty awesome assassins. As Batman, players will not only go toe-to-toe with villains like Killer Croc, but they will also have the opportunity to engage in some petty crimes, such as breaking and entering.

And eavesdropping! Okay, eavesdropping isn’t a crime, but it’s pretty rude.

As with Arkham City and Arkham Asylum, players will again make use of the freeflow combat system, stealth techniques, and gadgets to progress through the game. In this game, Batman can summon the Batwing so players no longer have to glide-Batclaw-glide-Batclaw-glide-fall-start over. Also unique to Origins is the new multiplayer mode, which pits Bane and the Joker’s henchmen against Batman and Robin. Players also have the option to play the “Hunter, Hunted” mode which pits six henchmen (three Joker, three Bane) against Batman in a sudden death match. Origins also has a high replay value. If players beat the game on “New Game Plus” mode, they’ll unlock “I Am the Night” mode. This special mode is extremely difficult because if Batman dies once, the game just ends.

But at least those burning flames will keep their corpses warm.

While Origins was probably the most criticized of the Batman games on this list, it’s still one of the better Batman games out there.

Last on our list is Batman: Arkham Knight, the fourth game in the Arkham series. This game ranks at 1 because of its character-driven storyline and because it improves upon nearly everything from the previous Arkham games. Set one year after the events in Arkham City, the game begins with Scarecrow releasing his fear toxin into Gotham City, causing citizens to hallucinate some pretty nightmarish creatures. When Batman goes to investigate, he crosses paths with the Arkham Knight and his band of rebels, and ends up exposed to Scarecrow’s toxin. Players who enjoyed Arkham Origins’ storyline will be excited to see some of the same plot points picked up in Arkham Knight. And since this game takes place within Gotham City, players will have the opportunity to drive a very modernized version of the Batmobile.

While the freeflow combat system remains the mainstay for the Batman video game franchise, Arkham Knight builds upon this system by introducing the dual play system and by enhancing some of Batman’s gadgets. The dual play system, which can only be used after several continuous combat streaks, allows players to seamlessly switch between Batman, Catwoman, Robin, and Nightwing. Batman’s batarang now includes a scanner, which can be used for gathering information about an area, and the Disruptor (Arkham City) received several upgrades, one of which includes the ability to electrify crates (setting booby-traps for enemies).

To be fair, I’m sure Batman gave him plenty of warning before electrocuting him.

The puzzles in the game are also more intricate and more difficult than in previous titles, and some of these require the Batmobile to solve. With loads of downloadable content, players will discover even more quests, missions, and villains to defeat. As the fastest selling game in the Arkham series, it’s no wonder this Batman game sold over 5 million copies only four months after its initial release.

I like civilized society. I really do. But now and then it can become so frustratingly dull. As the ultimate bad-boys, the killers from these games provide the best harmless taste of action, stealth and strategy so scarcely found in grocery lines. So buckle up for the best assassin games that you can play to become the ultimate killing machine, without all those pesky moral questions.

1. Dishonored (2012)

Grab your steam-powered gadgets, your freaky tattooed hand and an impractical but cool-looking mask, for this is Dunwall, and there is a lot of killing to be done! A disgraced bodyguard turned assassin, Corvo Attano is going to carve a bloody path towards redemption!

MUWAHAHAHAHA!... Uh, I mean, redemption. Yes, for redemption.

Featuring an engaging mix and match of magic, swords and steampunk, Dishonored lets you choose how to approach the action. Are you going to be merciful and just sneakily avoid detection, or do you have a penchant for murdering everything that moves, and then striking the corpses for good measure?

So I sneak past here and… Oh who am I kidding, they’re all gonna die.

But this is not one of those games where no matter if you went full psychotic or you talked your way out of it, everyone just seems supercool about it the next cutscene. No, Dishonored actually reacts to your choices, and even randomizes some portions of the game. So you have a different experience every time. Critically acclaimed for its design and style, you’ll always find a way to be sadistically creative. So have fun in your dystopia, kids.

2. Dishonored 2 (2016)

Bigger, better and closer to the sea, for some reason, Dishonored 2 ups the ante… twice I guess? We have two playable characters now, is what I’m saying. You can control either Corvo or the Empress in this expected sequel. And it looks so glorious, even your victims will be impressed.

*Blurghraaagh* (Translation: “Such finesse”).

Returning from the first game is everything you liked: choices, magic, steampunk, blood, nasty looking people. This time around though, not only can you choose a new character, but the upgrade system has been revamped to allow for character growth and deadlier combos and tactics.

I’m not even sure what’s happening right now, but I love it.

With a new game engine, narrative scenes that can be interrupted, stunning visuals and lots of expectations, Dishonored 2 looks like it’s one awesome promise that will soon come true. Fingers crossed.

3. Alekhine's Gun (2016)

So, you prefer your assassination contracts a little more gritty and realistic. You know, no magic but lots of chloroform and guns? Well, this is one game you should definitely check out. Named after a chess move but with definitely with more corpses, Alekhine’s Gun places you in control of Soviet agent Alekhine during the Cold War, a job that involves lots of “eliminating”.

His previous gig as an art critic didn’t work out.

You’re given a file with your targets and objectives, and then quite literally let loose in a certain location. After that, it’s all your decision. You will be judged, of course, and given an appropriate rank for how loud, violent, accurate and professional you were, but it’s not as if it’s gonna prevent you from getting another contract next level. So go nuts if you like.

99 random guys on the scene, 99 random guys! Take one down and hide it around, 98 random guys!

Allowing for meticulous planning or just winging it as you go, this game will have you replaying the levels and experiencing them in a lot of different ways, as you try and sometimes hilariously fail to execute your master plan. Good luck.

4. Hitman: Absolution (2013)

Legendary Agent 47 comes back in this 2013 installment. Tasked with killing his former ICA (International Contracts Agency) handler, Diana Burnwood, he will uncover a conspiracy that will take him to exotic locations while protecting a girl from killer nuns in latex outfits.

I’m not kidding. No wonder he wants absolution.

Without much room to impact the story with different actions or exploring big areas, it can be said that it has a slightly more linear approach to missions. After all, you have to go from point A to point B, and there’s not much room for going anywhere else. But it’s still close to the Hitman games you love and replay. This time around, you must use your Instincts (a literal power-up that lets you highlight important stuff) to navigate and kill your targets. You can do so with a bullet to the head or staging an accident, hiding corpses or avoiding detection whatsoever. Your choice.

Is it getting too packed? Oh right, you’re dead. Never mind.

And if you get bored with that, you can always enter the Contracts portion of the game, where you can design and play different user-made missions. A never-ending sneaky blood bath.

5. HITMAN (2016)

Before you even knew he had gone away, Agent 47 returns in this episodic game with a desire to travel, see the sights and shape the world through assassination. A hopeless romantic, I’d say.

That’s why all the red, obviously.

This installment, titled only Hitman, has been launching episodes all through 2016, with an upcoming one on January 2017. Each entry takes us to different and exotic locations around the globe. With a simplified Instincts mechanic, no more linear (i.e., no more limited exploration) and huge levels, this game tries to take everything that worked in Blood Money and mix it with Absolution ideas, giving it an overall different (and arguably better) feel than its predecessor.

Even with a helicopter besides him, not even his tie looks out of control.

With sandbox levels where to plan and kill in creative and unexpected ways, you’ll be quite happy that Agent 47 still looks good in that Italian suit of his, for you’ll be controlling him for quite a while.

6. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (2013)

You take the role of a new employee at a gaming studio in Montreal. No, not Ubisoft Montreal, it’s called Abstergo Entertainment. It’s obviously different. Here you are paid to relive the life and experiences of some guy using some high tech software. Fortunately, that guy is a sword fighting, parkour master, rum-loving pirate named Edward Kenway, who uncovers an ancient and dangerous conspiracy, stumbling right in the middle of the Assassins versus Templars conflict. All while visiting the wonderful Cuban archipelago and diving once or twice in its crystal blue waters.

Best job ever.

This game mixes everything you loved from the original gameplay mechanics, like the hidden blade stealth assassinations and the aforementioned parkour, with high-seas ship to ship combat and plunder. Never had high-sea piracy and singing sea shanties been so fun before.

What do you do with a drunken sailor early in the mooorning! Ugh, can’t get it out of my head.

So get ready to a swashbuckling adventure with action, stealth, and salty water, for Black Flag is a revitalizing and amazing game to check out even if you’re not familiar with the series.

7. Assassin's Creed: Revelations (2011)

So, you star Desmond Miles yet again, who is… in a coma. Oh, ok. But to exit such state, he must relive Ezio’s and Altaïr’s memories once more, as we explore Constantinople’s captivating architecture and streets.

I really don’t know how to stop, so I’ll just land on your skull. Deal?

Replacing the hidden blade (*gasp*, how dare they?) you’ve got the hookblade, which is more useful in traversing ropes through the city, making the pace faster and different from previous installments. You must also capture districts, like in Brotherhood, by eliminating the enemy presence and claiming that part of the city as your own (and thus accessing their stores and more). But now you have to defend them too with a sort of tower defense minigame. So a lot of games packed in one.

Chin up, son! *splargh* Oops.

The game features an addicting multiplayer that makes you feel paranoid in an exhilarating manner. Why you ask? Because you are both an assassin and a target, so you have to kill without alerting your mark, and also avoid being assassinated by another player. You also have all the usual goodies, such as collectibles, freaky clues about ancient conspiracies, upgrades, weapons, viewpoints, etc. Even if it might be a little more of the same ol’ Ezio, it is a game worth checking out if you’re a fan. And even if you aren’t, too.

8. Assassin's Creed Rogue (2015)

Themes: Assassin going rogue, historical conspiracy

Among all these killers, how to determine who’s the best? What about murdering a dedicated assassin’s order that has existed for centuries? What about going… rogue? If that’s your cup of tea, then this game is for you, as Shay decimates his former colleagues both on land and on the icy sea.

If I had another blade, I’d be holding it with my mouth.

With a revamped ship combat and your usual building climbing, sword and gun fights, this game follows closely the footsteps of previous entries in the series. Your allegiance impacts the enemies, though, as you now must intercept assassins and prevent them from… well, assassinating.

Even sailing is violent and involves breaking stuff

The 7th major installment of the series, although the mechanics may seem too similar to Black Flag, the change of allegiances brings a refreshing twist to the plot, with treason and danger at every corner.

9. Shadwen (2016)

Theme: Medieval regicide

In Shadwen, you take the role of, well, Shadwen. The plot is simple enough: You have to take care of a young girl Lily, while trying to assassinate your target. Pretty standard, huh? But you won’t settle for anything less than a king. Because you’re hardcore like that. So ask yourself: Do you like medieval settings? Do you hate having to replay a stealth level ‘cause you didn’t see that moron just standing there who gave off the alarm? ,You won’t have more troubles, as you strive to fulfill all of Shadwen’s kingslayer fantasies with total control of time and tactics.

Are any of you a king? No? You’ll die anyway. *Grin*.

The game has a rather unique mechanic, where time doesn’t pass if you don’t move. As such, you can plan and outmaneuver your enemies with carefully detailed tactics, as you rope swing from building to building and use clever gadgets and pointy blades. And even if you mess up, you can pull a Sands of Time move and turn back time a couple seconds and just try again. Nifty, huh?

Alternatively, you can just kill the same guy over and over again. Whatever floats your boat, you maniac.

With a free demo and an interesting gameplay, it doesn’t hurt to check this title out. What does hurt is when the guards catch you and kill you without mercy. So be on the lookout for that.

10. Mark of the Ninja (2012)

So, you’re a ninja on his day off. But ninjas don’t have days off, do they? That’s what you find when some soldiers burst in, gunning down everyone in sight. How do you balance the odds, you ask? By applying a killer tattoo, the aforementioned Mark of the Ninja. Killer as in it’ll kill you and/or make you mad. But let’s not dwell on that: the tattoo gives you superpowers!

Stabby superpowers!

In this 2D stealth platformer, you take the role of the only hope for your ninja clan (games have taught me that ninja clans are prone to dying out), as you take on soldiers with guns and dogs with rabies. But it’s still a risky endeavor. You must use the environment to your advantage, sticking to the shadows,creating opportunities, and using your superhuman reflexes to stay alive. You can even hang the corpses of your enemies to terrify them, as they don’t know who is out there killing their buddies, and distract them while you either run away or kill the unsuspecting victim.

And not so hidden vents. IT’S RIGHT THERE, MORON.

With upgrades that make you faster and more agile, imaginative stages with destructible light sources and lots of places to hide (like vents, shadow corners and the like), an interesting plot and a distinctive visual style, this is one little gem that not only measures up to any other stealth game, but sets the bar higher.

11. Sniper Elite 4 (2017)

Relying on stealth, planning and aim, Sniper Elite 4 is a game for those who like to be patient and precise, for it gives you a chance to control sniper Karl Fairburne as he helps the Italian resistance against those pesky World War II fascists.

Die, you fascist but punctual train!

The gameplay is quite similar to previous games, where you need to use the terrain to your advantage in order to get in the perfect position. What’s the perfect position? Ideally where all enemies (officers and privates alike) can’t see you, but you can see each and every one of them, putting bullets through their skulls without them knowing where they’re coming from. With larger maps than previous installments, an improved AI and the fan-favorite x-ray cam that activates when your kill is awesome enough, Sniper Elite promises to be a tactical and violently satisfying game.

I don’t know if I’m killing him or making him pass out with my dirty glove.

I know, I know. 2017 is not 2016. You know what? I don’t care. This game’s awesome. Why, you ask? Because it shows you that there’s a certain finesse to long range killing too. And better if you can see what happens to an eyeball when impacted by a high caliber bullet.

The system now includes shrapnel and melee kills for the x-ray cam, so if you’ve ever wondered exactly what your knife is doing inside your enemy’s heart, you’ll be satisfied with this game. You like the idea of a sniper, but history lessons are not your thing? Well, jump into the boots of a modern sniper, deployed in the middle of an Eastern European conflict where warring factions collide. And you can even use drones. Cool, right?

Fly my pretty, fly!

With the help of different gadgets (such as the aforementioned scouting drone) you will traverse open world levels that let you approach your objectives in several ways. Gather intel, position yourself for precise sniping, or just try to blow everything up before you are killed. You will find you can even do a little parkour to help you clear objectives.

No clue why everyone leaves iridescent footprints, though. Doesn’t seem healthy.

Obviously if the game is called “Sniper” it will have snipers, but this time around, you can actually upgrade and customize your weapons, with each part being assembled at the end into one lethal instrument. You’ll also have knives, handguns and machineguns, if you ever get tired with sniping. Even your drone has the possibility of being repaired, upgraded or retrofitted in order to accomplish certain specific tasks. So, lots of choices, people.

With the game’s creative director being an actual military veteran, and with an expanded budget compared to its predecessors, expect it to be quite intense.

13. Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China

Theme: Parkour assassins in historical settings

As the last of the Chinese Assassins, you must murder the hell out of those who have wronged you, and teach them why it is a bad idea to mess with a professional and ancient order of parkour master killers.

Take that, gravity!

In this 2D side scroller with 3D elements, you must traverse the stages with the familiar moves of the series, all while mixing and matching combat, stealth and platforming. No major plot innovations here, but the gripping gameplay and stylish visuals make for an enjoyable game that will keep you entertained.

That’s not very zen of you, attacking from behind.

As part of a series of smaller games, China gives us a refreshing change of pace in the franchise, while still retaining the feel and story of the main titles. All in all, a great little game to check out.

14. Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Blacklist (2013)

So, you’re just chilling out when terrorists suddenly blacklist (eh? get it?) the U.S. for deploying their troops in foreign soil. But this time you are Sam Fisher, and you just happen to have an entire counter-terrorist organization at your disposal. So you just go counter-terrorizing them.

Depicted: good mannered counter-terrorism

Using a mixture of traditional stealth elements and action-oriented abilities such as quick hand to hand combat and automatic precision shooting. So you can avoid detection, silently murder everyone, or LOUDLY murder everyone with explosives, night vision goggles and drones. You can even tag and kill targets with precision while you run like a lunatic. Your choice, really.

Is it just me or do our protagonists spend too much time grabbing ledges?

Although initially criticized for the change in voice actors, Blacklist was positively received, and remains as a fun installment in this stellar franchise.

15. Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction (2010)

Themes: Espionage, modern-day weapons

Blacklist’s predecessor, Conviction places you in the shoes of grief-stricken Sam Fisher as he aggressively investigates the hit and run death of his daughter, killing everyone who isn’t cooperative enough.

That’s one bossy building.

Marked by a more aggressive take on stealth than its predecessors, it is easier to fend off various enemies while still clinging to the shadows and usual sneaking around. This is also the debut of the mark and shoot mechanic, which lets you feel you have ungodly good aim as you gun down various enemies at the same time.

And if you run out of ammo, there’s always your boot.

With the co-op campaign back, it is a great game to jump in with a buddy. A trustworthy one, though, or else it becomes frustrating. But all in all, a fun action-focused take on an old classic.

16. Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (2014)

You are in command of the legendary Snake a.k.a. Big Boss himself, who is tasked with infiltrating a secret American prison on Cuban soil, and spring a couple dudes from a paramilitary organization. You know the drill.

I mean, rockets and missiles in Cuba? When has that ever gone wrong?

Stealth is the name of the game (or at least a subtitle or something), as it has been in all the previous installments. This time, though, there is no alert status or gauge to tell you if someone is looking at you, and now you must learn to use the audio and visual cues for a more immersive experience, for you actually have to pay attention to your surroundings and not rely on a HUD. Also, if someone sees you, time slows for a second to allow you to react in time, before that loud-mouthed guard blows your cover.

Flashlights and average eyesight! My one weakness!

A comparatively small game, it introduces new mechanics and brings back the old favorites such as silent weapons, stealth takedowns, complex politically and philosophically charged plot, and boxes. An amazing prologue and a fun challenge, it is priced accordingly and therefore is a great game to buy.

17. Metal Gear Solid 5 The Phantom Pain

You have fallen into a coma (dude, you should really stop doing that), and when you wake up, it’s time to do some sneaky business, albeit with a missing arm. Taking control of Big Boss a.k.a. Venomous Snake, you join the cutely name Diamond Dogs mercenary group to track down the men responsible of killing your previous group. All this during the Angolan Civil War.

And yes, that’s a Diamond Dog dog. Awesome.

The gameplay remains largely unchanged from Ground Zeroes, now you have an enormous open-world to screw around and use your gadgets and abilities in more varied situations, from infiltrating bases to kidnapping wildlife (seriously). You can even choose which missions to tackle first, depending on where you go (either on foot, by horse, tank or chopper). All this while using the Fulton recovery balloons to abduct people and resources to build your base.

Or you can just spend 3 hours “uplifting” random goats.

One fun thing to note is that Hideo Kojima, the game’s director, really tried to keep the game in secret. I mean, there are videos still in the Internet where he goes through the trouble of creating a fake studio, under a fake name, and announcing the project as an independent game. But the fans of Metal Gear Solid saw through the ruse right away, solving the hidden clues and making the connection. Never underestimate the internet, or dedicated fans with too much time on their hands. So let’s hope you’re actually sneakier in-game than the marketing team. Zing!

18. Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor (2014)

In this game based on Tolkien’s work, you take the place of Talon, a guy who had the misfortune of horribly dying. Understandably, you are quite angry. With the help of your undead guide, you have to…stop Sauron, I guess? Avenge your family? Whatever the case, you kill TONS of orcs.

You also make them uncomfortable by inappropriately caressing their cheeks.

With Mordor as an open world to explore (and murder the hell out of), you must navigate the hostile territory with your awesome parkour skills, killing orcs with sword, dagger, bow or magic. It’s like Assassin’s Creed meet Arkham Asylum, but with more beheadings.

Pop goes the weasel! Also, that dude on the left is about to lose his breakfast over this.

Where this game really comes together is with the Nemesis system: Orcs have a hierarchy, and killing you makes them move up. You can either kill or brainwash them, and even develop a rivalry with one in particular. And because every orc and trait is randomly generated for each game, your nemesis and your history will be exclusive to you. Unless you want to tell the developers, who actually reenacted one such story with voice acting in Youtube. And that’s a win, right there.

19. Styx: Master of Shadows

Themes: Inflitration, goblin coming-of-age, fantasy

The first goblin. Or at least the first charismatic one. Your heart’s desire is a literal heart (yup, a heart as in a beating, living heart…to each their own) of a World Tree, hidden away in a huge tower. So let’s infiltrate the hell out of it, ok?

Hey, being short is an advantage!

With different skill trees and various abilities to remain hidden and take advantage of the environment, Styx can use a combination of steel and magic to overcome problematic odds and move from one hiding spot to another. You can then use your blade to jump on top of your enemies, either loudly slashing them, or using your green little hands to muffle their screams. Or you can just rob them blind. Do mind larger enemies, though.

Hey, being short is a disadvantage. Crap.

A sequel has been announced for 2016, so trail away and die a lot: in the end, this is not the last time we’ll see our little green friend. And that’s a good thing.

Ok, ok. Garret the master-thief is actually opposed to killing random people, even if he does live in a nightmarish world of darkness and disease that looks like the worst fears of the Industrial Revolution. What is he doing in an assassins list? Two things: first, as you traverse the rooftops and streets stealing anything you can get your sticky fingers on, while uncovering a supernatural conspiracy in which you were accidentally involved, you’ll find you actually have the skills of an assassin, even if you choose not to kill. And secondly, if you have qualms with this you’re gonna hate the next entry. But let’s cross that bridge when it comes to it, ok?

Na na na na na na na na… guess who?

Using your natural agility and a stealthy approach, you must use the shadows to your advantage, either by avoiding light or extinguishing torches and candles. Apart from picking up everything of value that’s lying around, you also have the choice of sneaking behind someone and picking his pocket. And then wack him on the back of his head, if you want.

Or in the… nether regions.

With cool gadgets like water arrows to douse the flames, a cool little supernatural instinct to help you during the levels, an awesome hideout and supernatural plot, this remake brings the feeling of the old games to a new generation, ready to take the mantle of a master thief.

21. Batman Arkham Knight (2015)

Themes: Superheroes. Batman.

Here we go. Batman. The caped-crusader with the no-kill rule. When the Scarecrow and the titular Arkham Knight take over Gotham and let the criminals loose against Batman, ol’ Brucie must make things right by punching people. But an assassin? No, not really. But if you’ve paid attention, all the mechanics and abilities every other guy on this list has is neatly summarized inside the pointy-eared cowl of Batman, with the only difference that he leaves broken bones and not severed limbs. So come on, it’s Batman, don’t gripe about that stuff and let’s have fun, ok?

Besides, tell me the guy on the left isn’t going to die after being run over. Come on.

The free flow combat is back, along with the gadgets, the “predator” stages, and everything you loved about the previous Arkham games. Oh, and now we have the Batmobile, which is a freaking missile launching tank. With expanded gameplay mechanics, you can even summon allies during your combos and pummel that cowardly, superstitious lot that is the criminal underworld. All this while trying to beat that guy who looks like a high tech version of yourself.

Dude, I totally have to call your Alfred to get some of that fancy armor.

An amazingly fun and engaging game, it did have some troubles with its launch on PC. But after a series of patches, suspending the sales and then starting anew, the developers are constantly improving and patching any issues it could have. So you should really try it out. I mean, just look at the gameplay and tell me it doesn’t look slick. So have fun squashing skulls non-lethally, and remember no one will judge you if you start saying “I’m Batman” after every takedown.

So, if you really need more convincing, I have no idea what you want. I mean, action, adventure, stealth and cool plots. From a blade in the dark to Batman, from snipers to ninjas, you will definitely find a game that gives you that surge of adrenaline that’ll help you kill time. And virtual enemies. So everyone wins.
