Building your own army of soldiers, and then upgrading them to caravans or maybe a kingdom of your own is just fantastic. When you enter a town, you control only one person, and that is the same for the battles.

You get different villagers with traits and different buildings that suit your favorite playstyle. Supposedly it is offering unseen freedom when building your village and improving it.

The battles are what’s the most fascinating. There’s no cutscene or anything like that. The soldiers that you muster next to your blacksmiths, are the same that you see fight it out with your enemy.

The Ai system is so good. You actually feel like playing with real-life players. It’s just a blast to go into war and deal real attrition to your enemies, as you cut out their grain and food supply by ruining their trade lines. You can see how your villagers are reacting to everything happening in the world, and you can see them become a higher class.

How big should you build your farms and crop fields in Banished?

Are you into farming games? Do you enjoy planting and harvesting crops, caring for them as they grow and get ripe? If so, then Banished is just the game for you. If you’ve never heard of it, it’s a city building game from Shining Rock Software, in which you’ll build your own community from scratch, with their own architecture, economy, and agriculture. Crops will be an important part of your community and they have the potential to become the major source of food for your citizens, so how to plan your farms wisely? What should they be like to provide the biggest amount of food throughout the harvest season?

One important factor is the size of your farm. When you build a crop field or an orchard, it’s always up to you to decide how wide and how long you’re going to make it. Perhaps it’s going to be square and small, or rectangular and huge? It’s entirely up to you. Of course, different sizes can achieve different results. The size impacts whether all the crops growing on a given farm will be harvested on time before winter strikes and ruins whatever crops have not been gathered yet. That’s why it’s important to make sure that the ratio between the size of the farm and the workers assigned to it is accurate for the crops to be gathered just in time. Another factor is that different crops grow at a slightly different time of the year: some are ready to be harvested by the end of summer, while others won’t be ready until late autumn, so once they are ready, your farmers will have to work quickly because winter is right around the corner.

So what farm sizes do we recommend? Let’s have a look.

5. 8x14, with 1 worker

Don’t dismiss small farms - they will prove useful in the right circumstances.

You may want to use this farm size somewhere at the beginning of your game, and either leave it as it is forever or replace it with a bigger farm later. You’ll notice that the crops will be harvested from an 8x14 farm somewhere by the beginning of the autumn (the end of early autumn or the beginning of autumn at the latest), which is a great deal if you’re nervous about frosts damaging your unharvested crops.

What is great about this farm size?

It’s undemanding in both size and workers required. If you can’t spare too many farmers or if you have a relatively small patch of land that you can’t decide how to occupy, this is your answer.
Sometimes, you’ll need to fit a farm in between buildings or roads that leave only with a long and narrow space, let’s say, somewhere 8x14. City planning isn’t always easy, so you’ll need all the flexibility you can master, and that comes with experimental farm sizes such as this one.
Who said farms must all be square? If you care about looks as much as about efficiency, you may actually like the way farms of different shapes look on your map. Embrace diversity!

4. 10x10, with 1 worker

Watch your crops growing and getting ripe under the care of the farmers.

This is the smallest farm of those that you can be sure of serving you well. It’s an amazing option if you’re just starting a new game and your population is still very, very low. There are only so many workers you can spare to work at your farms, so you have to choose wisely, especially if you’d like to use all your 4-5 seeds given to you at the beginning of the game. That’s why a 10x10 farm is your go-to option.

What is great about this farm size?

It’s so small it’ll prove useful for occupying small hills that can’t be used for placing buildings on them.
They don’t need more than 1 worker, which is great for when your population is low and you can’t spare many laborers to work on farms.
The crops growing on such a small farm will never die in early frosts because your farmers will always harvest them early enough.

3. 15x10, with 2 workers

Plant different seeds on your farms. Your citizens will thank you for a rich diet.

A slightly bigger farm than the previous one, it has its advantages, which I’m sure you’ll want to explore. Obviously, since it’s bigger, it’ll provide more food, but that also means it’ll require more workers to harvest its crops. They will not harvest themselves, are they?

What is great about this farm size?

It provides more food. As your population is growing, it might be a safer bet to start building bigger farms, so 10x15 will prove useful to your city expansion.
It’s still convenient in case you still don’t have many laborers. After all, 2 workers are only slightly more than 1.
You may decide to replace a 10x10 farm with a bigger one later on when your body count is higher, but a 15x10 farm is much more likely to stay without changes.

2. 12x12, with 2 workers

Building houses close to farms prevents farmers from going too far when they need to eat or get warm.

The size of one farm doesn’t have to be very different from the size of another to make all the difference. Sometimes it’s a matter of only a few tiles: make it too big and your crops will go to waste. Make it too small and your farmers will stay idle for half a season. The 12x12 farm is a terrific alternative to a 10x10 farm if you feel like that 1 farmer you assigned to the smaller farm does their work too fast and then rests all autumn. You can make a bold move, replace your 10x10 with 12x12 and see if now that worker will have as much time to be idle.

What is great about this farm size?

It’s better than 10x10 for some crops that grow fast, such as beans.
It’s an alternative worth exploring if the 10x10 farms prove to be too small for 1 worker, depending on the seeds planted there.
Potentially it can also be replaced by a 15x10 or 15x15 farm if you decide to change your strategy or clear some space around the 12x12 farm.

1. 15x15, with 3 workers

You can never have too many farms! When it comes to food, excess is better than shortage.

This farm size is especially efficient for orchards, where you’ll be growing fruit and nut trees such as walnut, pecan, chestnut, apple, cherry, etc. I personally used this farm size all the time, for all occasions, when I was just starting to play Banished until it occurred to me that there are other sizes that I can use if the situation requires it. That is not to say that I was disappointed in 15x15. On the contrary, after hundreds of hours of playing Banished, 15x15 is still the most frequently used farm size for me. It’s also a great option if you don’t like the idea of having many small farms with the same type of food in every neighborhood and would rather have fewer of them and have your food travel around from market to market.

What is great about this farm size?

Having bigger farms means having fewer of them. Decide which you prefer more, or which bothers you less, if you will: having to create new farms frequently enough because you make them small, or building larger farms, assigning more workers to them, and being able not to worry for a while about new sources of food.
It can be easier to plan the infrastructure of your city with bigger farms. Finding a flat patch of land is all you need to build a 15x15 farm. You can just build everything else around it. Some players prefer that option instead of spamming smaller farms on their maps and having to fit houses, storage barns, and markets in between.
Some crops, such as beans, grow really fast. Observe your farms and I won’t be surprised if you’ll find that some of them can do just as great with 2 workers instead of 3.

Remember that there are other factors that will determine the success of your harvests:

Equip all your workers with the best, most long-lasting tools you can.
Try to keep a few residential houses and storage barns as close to your farms as possible to reduce the time your workers spend taking the harvest to the storage and going home to eat and rest.
Keep your citizens happy! Unhappy citizens are more likely to idle, which will reduce the income of food.

There are a lot of fun city-building video games out there, old and new, some better than others. Today, the game in question is Banished, released in 2014 by Shining Rock Software. This game is all about building your own society from scratch, developing their agriculture and economy, expanding the borders of your village, which will slowly turn into a town and then into a city. The task is not as easy as it may appear, since you will have to juggle a lot of knives at the same time.

So let me make it easier for you and give you some tips on pasture building, and more specifically, how big you want your pastures to be.

Why is pasture size important?

Yes, why is it important? Can’t I just build it as big as possible and be done with it? After all, the bigger the better, is it not?

Well, no, you can’t. And no, it isn’t. At least not in this case.

The pasture size is important because it will determine the success of your venture, or at least a big part of your agriculture. Make your pastures too small and they will hardly bring any food and other resources. Make them too big and you’ll wait forever for any meat to appear in your storage barns.

While it is true that bigger pastures fit more animals, which ultimately means more animal products, building pastures that are too big has its own disadvantages that can hurt your city in the most painful ways and in the worst possible timing.

That’s why it’s so important to choose the size of your pasture wisely based on which type of animal it’s for, how early in the game you’re building it, and how badly you need the resources that you intend this pasture to give you. So what are the top 5 best pasture sizes? Let’s find out!

5. 10x10 Pasture

Tiny pastures for tiny animals.

This is a small, easy-to-build pasture, with both these qualities proving very useful when you have little time, few resources, and an urgent need for animal products. You’ll need 36 logs to build a pasture like that, a very non-demanding number. All things considered, this pasture is your go-to option at the very beginning of the game, or when you have the livestock that you urgently need to put in a pasture to get the products associated with it.

That said, it’s important to notice that a pasture of this size is best to be used only for poultry, i.e. chickens, ducks, or leghorns. It makes little sense to use it for cows or bison or even pigs - it won’t fit many of them. As a result, you may not even have enough animals in your first 10x10 pasture to use later to split the animals and let half of them go into another pasture. Really, you’ll do better with 20 chickens than you will with 5 bison.

What is great about this pasture size

It’s quick and easy to build.
Ideal for the very first years of a new game, when resources are still scarce.
Ideal for when you urgently need to increase incoming resources.
Recommended only for poultry (chickens, leghorns, or ducks); other types of livestock will bring little use in such a small enclosure.
It will start bringing food soon after it’s built since the number of animals in it will reach the allowed maximum quickly.

4. 10x15 Pasture

Bigger pastures, but still the same tiny animals.

It’s like the 10x10 pasture, really, but even a minor change can make a lot of difference when it comes to Banished. With only 46 logs required, it’s also quite easy to build and it won’t take a toll on your reserve of building materials. Also useful in tough situations of shortage or at the beginning of a game, this pasture will ultimately bring you more resources than a 10x10 would.

I would still not use it for any type of livestock other than poultry, so if you have chickens, leghorns, or ducks available, make the best of these animals and use the chance to build a 15x15 pasture.

What is great about this pasture size

Quick and easy to build; it will take only slightly more time to build this pasture than a 10x10 one.
Proves useful for poultry, whereas not recommended for bigger animals.
Will start bringing in animal products soon after it’s built.
This pasture can definitely be used for splitting the livestock and using half of it for another, new pasture.
In the long run, it will provide you with more animal products than a 10x10 pasture would.

3. 15x15 Pasture

Bigger animals need more space to live and breed comfortably.

While the 15x15 pasture is only 5 square meters bigger than the 10x15 one, it makes a significant enough difference for you to be able to place bigger animals in it (which proves my point about minor changes making a big difference in the game).

Yes, finally, you can start placing pigs, sheep, deer, and llamas in your pastures (if you’re playing without mods, you won’t have any of these animals but sheep). All four will give you meat, but llamas and sheep will provide you with wool as well. The pastures won’t start giving you meat until the number of animals reaches the maximum allowed in a pasture, but they will give you wool even if you have 10 llamas in a pasture that allows there to be 20.

What is great about this pasture size

It’s a natural progression from smaller pastures to bigger ones, inevitable as you progress in your game.
Big enough to shelter animals bigger than poultry: pigs, sheep, and llamas will all do good there and provide you with a sufficient amount of animal goods.
With bigger animals in your pastures, you will begin to get wool from sheep and llamas. Wool can be used for creating clothing or for trade.
Although bigger than the two pastures mentioned previously, it can still shelter ducks, leghorns, and chickens. You’ll have a ton of them, so make sure to assign 2 herdsmen at least to look after your birds!

2. 20x20 Pasture

Give your cows, bison, and horses plenty of space to roam with these huge pastures!

This is my personal favorite pasture size regardless of what type of livestock I plan to place there. Yes, that’s right, it works great for the biggest animals in the game, such as cows, horses, and bison. Your 20x20 pastures will be able to fit so many cows and bison that it will be plenty for a steady income of meat and milk and for splitting the livestock between pastures.

Needless to say, it’ll fit even more of smaller animals than any previously mentioned pasture would, so I recommend using 2 herdsmen for any type of livestock smaller than a pig.

What is great about this pasture size

It brings bigger animals and therefore completes the list of all your livestock types. Isn’t that a satisfying feeling?
It will bring you large amounts of animal products all year long. Meat, leather, milk, wool - you name it.
It will be able to spare more animals for a newly build pasture with the same animal type than a smaller pasture would.
Although it’s more demanding in materials needed to build the pasture, it will also clear a bigger area needed to build it. In other words, by building the pasture, you’ll gather more logs than you’ll spend on building it. It’s a win-win!

1. 25x25 Pasture

Make space for the biggest pastures to give your animals the freedom of movement.

The biggest of all the pastures recommended in this article, this enclosure will take a while to be built, so perhaps it’s better to make it a priority and throw all your laborers and as many builders as possible at it. If you have previously cleared the area where you want your pasture to be, it’ll save you some time on building it. Otherwise, you’ll have to muster all your patience while waiting for the laborers to remove all the resources from the ground.

Like the pasture mentioned above, the 25x25 one is ideal for large livestock, but you can use it for smaller animals as well. Nore that it’s best to assign at least 2 herdsmen to care for your pigs, deer, sheep, or llamas, and as many as 3 herdsmen to look after chickens or other poultry. Any fewer workers than that won’t be able to keep up with the income of eggs, meat, or wool produced by smaller animals in such a big pasture. Remember, someone has to actually take all those products to storage barns before your citizens can use them.

What is great about this pasture size

It will bring you massive amounts of meat, wool, leather, and eggs, which makes it a very useful addition to your agriculture system.
The most ideal pasture for bison, the largest type of livestock available in Banished. With a pasture like this, you’ll have more bison meat than ever before!
Just imagine how full of resources your stock piles will be after you’ve cleared an area for such a large enclosure. You will basically use the same logs you’ve just collected to build the pasture. It’s almost as if you were building it for free!
Splitting the livestock in a 25x25 pasture will allow you to put so many animals in a newly built pasture that I’m sure they’ll hit the maximum very soon. You’ll never have to buy animals from merchants again.

Remember that there are other factors that will determine the success of your pastures:

Banished, a 2014 Shining Rock Software video game, is a chance at going through an amazing experience of city building, with all of its challenges and rewards. Fun, complex, and entertaining, it pushes you to work hard towards the happiness of the community you’re building in the game. As the population grows, buildings get constructed, and borders expand, it’s getting more and more challenging to keep everything under control, but you must try anyway. And you must succeed if you want your citizens to live on and thrive.

One task you’ll be presented with in Banished is to plant crops to feed your citizens. Those grow in crop fields and orchards. Which can come practically in any size you want. So how do you know what size to choose? Does it even matter? Fortunately for you, this is what we’re going to talk about today: the best sizes for an orchard.

Why is orchard size important?

Just like crop fields and pastures, orchards rely on the workers assigned to them in order for the crops to be nurtured and harvested. The size is important for multiple reasons:

It determines how many workers should best be assigned to an orchard, so that they take care of the crop, but at the same time none of the workers will idle around from having nothing to do.
If an orchard is too small, it’ll bring too little food. If it’s too big, your workers may not have enough time to collect the harvest before winter, so any harvest they haven’t collected will die in the cold and, as a result, your orchard will still bring less food than it could have.
Different sizes work better or worse depending on what stage in the game you’re in, how many laborers you can spare to be farmers, or how big your population is. There’s a reason we’re talking about 5 best sizes for an orchard instead of the best size: there’s no universal size that would always work better than any other orchard size. To succeed in Banished, you’ll need to adapt your orchards to the circumstances you’re in.

5. The 10x10 orchard, with 1 worker

This is a rather small orchard that you’ll want to turn to at the beginning of your game when you don’t have many laborers at hand, so you can’t spare many to become farmers. This undemanding orchard requires nothing but a small patch of land and 1 farmer to take care of its yield - a very reasonable request, if you ask me.

Remember that orchards, unlike crop fields, do not bring harvests on the first season after being planted, so don’t put all your hopes on orchards, forgetting all about crop fields. While the trees in your orchards are growing and preparing for their first harvest, you’ll need to take care of alternative food sources, such as gatherers’ and hunters’ cabins, crop fields, and fishing docs.

What is great about this orchard size?

It’s easy to build. As it does not need any actual resources to be spent on it, your task is only to clear the area where you want your orchard to be. Not only does it not require resources, but it actually brings more resources to you!
It’s not demanding when it comes to the number of workers. 1 farmer can easily take care of an area as small as 10x10, with no risk of some of the orchard’s yield being destroyed by the cold.
All things considered, it’s ideal for the beginning of a new game. You’ll be able to distribute your resources wisely and effectively, and a few years later, you’ll get the first harvests from your 10x10 orchards.

4. The 5x15 orchard, with 1 worker

Unusually long orchards can give your city a curious look.

This orchard may be unusually long, but trust me, it’s as efficient as the 10x10 one. Essentially, it offers roughly the same amount of food as the 10x10 orchard, but it has its own advantages due to its long, rectangular shape.

The 5x15 orchard is another good option if you want to keep your number of farmers to a minimum, whether it’s because you don’t have many people in your village or because you simply prefer smaller orchards with fewer people working on them.

In addition to good food per worker ratio, such orchards also allow you to diversify the infrastructure of your village. Having all your orchards and crop fields square won’t give you much freedom for the construction of those buildings that don’t fit in those square boundaries. Sometimes, you’ll need to fill in some space with a 5x15 orchard unless you want to have random patches of unused land that serve no purpose at all.

What is great about this orchard size?

It’s a different shape, rectangular instead of square, which is a pleasant change that will improve your city infrastructure and make your settlement look more interesting.
1 worker - that’s all it takes to harvest the crops from a 5x15 orchard before the first frosts arrive.
It’s also easy and quick to build, particularly if you clear the area for an orchard in advance. Then, you’ll have it ready in no time!

3. The 12x12 orchard, with 2 workers

Only slightly bigger than 10x10, this orchard may make you pause and ask: Is there really any difference between these two orchards? The answer is, yes, it is, but you need to know the game a bit better to feel it.

The 12x12 orchard has the potential to offer you better food income later in the game, when you have already been able to provide better quality of life to your citizens. What do I mean by quality of life? I mean things like, for example, steel tools instead of iron tools (the better the tools the more work your citizens can get done), or fur coats instead of hide coats (warmer, better clothing will prevent your citizens from going home to warm themselves too often).

All these tiny details are super easy to overlook, especially if you’re a beginner in Banished. Make no mistake: they do matter!

What is great about this orchard size?

Building this orchard won’t be difficult or time-consuming. If you’re far-sighted, you’ll also make sure to clear the space in advance to reduce even more the time required for building it.
Bigger orchard size - more work to be done, hence more workers required. Don’t worry, more only means 2 instead of 1. This orchard is still quite small, so don’t bother assigning a band of farmers to do the work a couple of farmers can do. If you feel risky, you can also try assigning 1 farmer and see what happens, but be prepared for this experiment to fail and for some of the yield to be destroyed by the early winter frosts.
This orchard is exactly what you need when you’ve already advanced in the game. With better tools, better clothing, and other things that will boost your workers’ productivity, a 12x12 orchard will prove very fruitful - just give it a chance!

2. The 10x15 orchard, with 3 workers

As far as orchards go, this one is a middle point between what it demands and what it provides. Yes, it’s bigger than any of the orchards I’ve mentioned earlier, but it is certainly worth the time, the effort, and the workforce put into it.

Although assigning 3 workers to an orchard of this size is your safest option, you can also experiment and see what this bad boy can do with 2 farmers. Perhaps you have all the best tools, all the warmest coats, perhaps your orchard is surrounded with houses for your farmers, storage barns where all the food will be taken, the best stone roads. Maybe conditions as advanced as these will actually allow you to gather all the yield of a 10x15 orchard with only 2 workers. If not, you can always assign one more and not be sad about it for too long.

What is great about this orchard size?

A bigger orchard means more food! As your population is growing, you’ll need either to build a lot more small orchards or somewhat more orchards of bigger size, such as 10x15. With hundreds of citizens roaming the streets of your city, 10x10 orchards won’t help you any longer. Reach for 10x15 and you’re going to be just fine.
A bigger orchard brings more resources in when being built! All the logs, stones, iron, herbs, and wild foods will end up right in your storage areas where they belong.
The rectangular shape allows for more flexibility when planning the layout of your city. What buildings are you going to surround your orchard with? Which type of residential houses? Having orchards of different orchards and sizes gives you much more freedom to build smart without wasting any space.

1. The 15x15 orchard, with 3 workers

Orchards are a great way to throw some shade on the nearby buildings, especially in the summer heat.

15x15 is the biggest size you will probably want your orchards to have. Any bigger than that might turn out messy, inefficient, and difficult to control. A 15x15 orchard, while being the biggest in your city and bringing you most food, is still a very smart and manageable plot of land that will prove useful to you and your citizens.

The 15x15 orchard is my personal favorite. I use mostly use this size for my orchards whenever playing Banished, so I can say with certainty it has deserved the first place! However, this orchard does not leave much space for experimenting: I strongly recommend assigning no fewer than 3 workers to an orchard as big as this one and not bother trying your luck with only 2. Even with the best tools, coats, and roads, 2 workers won’t be able to gather its full harvest on time, and you don’t really want to waste precious food, do you?

What is great about this orchard size?

Building it will bring a ton of natural resources into your storage areas!
Eyes on the prize! If 3 workers seem to be too much of a sacrifice to a single plot of land, remember that this plot of land has the potential of saving your population from starvation. Assigning 3 workers to one orchard is not that high of a price to pay, is it?
As soon as you begin to build 15x15 orchards, you can slow down a little and build them with lower frequency. It doesn’t have to be a race anymore, it can now be a marathon. In between building orchards you can also assign your builders to other constructions, such as residential houses, churches, or pastures. Just don’t abandon the idea of new orchards altogether!
With three workers, a 15x15 orchard is an excellent source of food. They won’t finish with the harvest too early, so you won’t see them chilling with nothing to do, but there’s also no risk that the winter will come when the orchard still has ungathered yield. It’s a perfect worker-to-yield ratio!

As important as the size of an orchard is, don’t let yourself forget about the importance of other factors. Some of them I’ve mentioned already, but others belong on the list as well:

Dress your people well to minimize their necessity to go home and warm themselves too often.
Equip all your workers with the best tools. Steel tools tend to last much longer than iron tools, which will reduce the frequency of your workers dropping by a market to get a new tool to work with.
Build roads. Stone roads and brick roads speed up your citizens’ travel by a lot. You can actually zoom in on a random person in Banished and compare how fast they walk on the bare land versus on the road. The contrast will surprise you!
Build your workers’ homes as close as possible to the orchard where they work. That way, if they do need to go home to rest or eat, it won’t take them long. They’ll be back at work in a blink of an eye.
Build storage barns directly near your orchards. The workers will need to take the food there, so why not save them a long journey?

A successful Banished city depends a lot on your ability to multitask and cover all areas of development. As long as you do that - and remember to have fun in the process - your city will be the envy of the world!

7. Colorful 2 Floors Little Houses

The name of this modpack is pretty self-explanatory, isn’t it? It offers you new residential buildings which are colorful and have two stories. Technically, they are two separate buildings: first, you build a one-story house, and then, as a separate building, you build a second floor right on top of it.

The same amount of space can now provide housing for two families instead of one. That’s right, the ground floor will house one family, and as soon as you build the second floor, it’ll have a separate entrance through the stairs and it’ll become home for another family.
You can experiment and build a neighborhood that only has one-story houses with a tiny garden space next to each - I’m sure it’ll look very countryside-like.
The second floor can be built on top of other buildings, not only on top of the ground floor of a colorful house, for example, on top of a regular wooden or stone building and even on top of a blacksmith, a hunting cabin, or a fishing dock.

6. Unlimited Mines and Quarries

Mines and quarries are a necessary evil, but you should keep residential houses away from them.

You may remember my mentioning mines and quarries as a means of obtaining resources required for building and production. Quarries allow to get stone and sometimes other materials like marble, and mines provide iron, coal, and, in some mods, salt and precious stones. Normally, every mine and quarry has a limit to it. Once you reach it, there’s nothing else you can obtain from it, and you’ll have to build a new one if you want to continue getting materials. So what’s up with this modpack?

Why Unlimited Mines And Quarries Is Fun

As the title suggests, the mines and the quarries will become limitless. It means that every single one of them can be used forever. They’ll never run out of resources, so you will never run out of them either!
Having unlimited mines means that, in the long run, you’ll have to build fewer of them than you’d have to if they were limited. This also means that, when planning on the landscape of your map, you can opt for valleys rather than mountains and have more space for buildings, pastures, crop fields, and orchards that must be on the plain ground.
Never having to worry about your mines and quarries running out of resources means you can hire more miners and stonecutters than you actually need and trade any excess of resources. There’s no risk of shortage of stone or iron for building or tool production, so why not spare some for the sake of trade?

Why Medieval Town Is Fun

You’ll use resources that you may have never used before. Now you can obtain salt and clay for processing fish and meat and for building more advanced structures. With salt, you’ll be able to produce salted fish and meat. Clay will go to production of pottery, bricks, and roof tile.
New foods! You can finally plant grains such as barley or wheat, which will be processed into flour in the windmills and watermills, which will then be used for bread making in the bakeries. And who doesn’t love bread?
Categorized storage spaces? Yes to that! In Medieval Town, you can build all kinds of storage, big and small, for common use and for food only. Build a Grain Silo near your grain crop fields, and its space won’t be occupied by tools or textiles. Build a Root Cellar, and you’ll know it will store nothing but fruits and vegetables. How convenient!
A lot of new buildings aimed at increasing the health and happiness of your citizens! Make an appointment at the dentist’s to keep your dental hygiene at the top level. Spend an afternoon at the library to stay well-read and educated. Drop by the bathhouse to treat yourself to a few hours of pampering. And finally, impress the travelling merchants and the passing by nomads with the gigantic Medieval Cathedral!

An extended choice of professions to assign to your citizens. You can now have butchers, shoremen, dredgers, and many other workers that don’t exist in the non-modded game version.
Those workers in the new professions have to work somewhere, right? This means you’ll have a ton of new buildings in this modpack, especially shoreline buildings. In the original game version, you can’t really do anything with the shores except build a trading post and spam fishing docks everywhere. No more! Now you’ll be able to place shorehouses, hunting blinds, and many other buildings which will finally bring your shores to life.
Even longer production chains than in Medieval Town! Bake bread, make dairy products out of milk, produce dried, salted, and smoked fish, make all sorts of clothes for your citizens from silk, linen, and cloth. The sky’s the limit!

Megamod. Sounds big, doesn’t it? Well, it is big. It’s the most massive, all-inclusive Banished modpack so far. Any type of residential building you have ever seen in another modpack will probably be here. Any profession you’ve ever seen in another modpack will definitely be here. This mod is for experienced Banished players, those who don’t feel dizzy from long production chains and who want to build a life as rich as possible for their society.

Why Megamod Is Fun

It offers a gigantic map, so you can be sure you’ll have plenty of space for all those dozens and dozens of crop fields and orchards and hundreds of buildings.
It allows for an incredible variety of neighborhoods. You can decide on the style of architecture, you can mix or separate, and you can truly unleash your inner architect with this modpack.
You’ll have more jobs for your citizens than ever before. Honestly, you probably won’t be able to keep up with all those professions, but don’t worry, you can always keep the list of professions open on the side of your screen.
Your citizens’ diet has never been richer. With so many different fruits, veggies, nuts, meats, and seafood, their happiness is practically guaranteed!
One word: cheats. In case it gets tough (and it will get tough at times, make no mistake), you can always click a magical button offered by the modpack to add logs or stone, or food, or tools to your storage space, depending on what shortage you’re facing now. You may not have to use it often, if at all, but isn’t it great to just know that it’s there in case you need it?

What size should you build your cemeteries when playing Banished?

Cemeteries are a grim business, but just as in life, you can’t do without them in Banished, a city-building video game by Shining Rock Software. If you’ve already built tons of farms, pastures, houses, and markets, but the feeling that you’re forgetting something won’t go away, check if you’ve built any cemeteries. You haven’t? Well, now you know what you’ve forgotten.

So what kind of cemetery would you even like to build? A big one? A small one? Lots of small ones, with a big one in the middle? Does that even matter?

Yes, it does, and if you’d like to know why it matters, you’ve come to the right place.

Why is cemetery size important?

First off, why do you need a cemetery in your Banished town?

When I said you can’t do without one in the game, I wasn’t 100% honest. You can build a community without a single cemetery, but it will have consequences. As a city-building game, Banished is very complex and considers many different aspects of human life. It’s not enough to just make sure your people have roofs over their heads and enough food to eat. A lot of things have a negative or positive impact on the happiness of the citizens.

For example, building houses too close to a mine or a quarry will be a violent hit on the happiness of their residents, whereas building cemeteries will allow your citizens to bury their relatives and friends, which will increase their happiness. You will also notice that a cemetery is a frequent destination point for those who are in the mood to idle. Would you really deny them a few hours of peace they can enjoy visiting a deceased husband or parent?

Cemeteries are an important addition to the life of your community. You just need to decide how big to make them and how many you need, and this is where I can help!

5. The 7x7 cemetery

The smallest cemetery in the game.

7x7 is the minimum size of the cemetery that can be built in Banished. The game won’t allow you to build any smaller than that, and frankly, you wouldn’t really need to. As your citizens die, their graves automatically appear in the cemetery, and it increases the level of happiness for those who have just buried their loved ones.

Don’t worry, those graves won’t stay there forever. Occasionally, the graves disappear, making more spots available for any future graves. The fewer people you have and the better their conditions are, the less frequent deaths are. For instance, having enough food for everyone means nobody dies of starvation, and building warm houses and dressing your citizens in coats means nobody freezes to death.

Of course, there will always be scenarios over which you have little control. Occasionally, a woman will die during childbirth, or a forester will be killed by a falling tree, but ideally, the major cause of death is old age. If that’s the case, a 7x7 cemetery will last for decades before you’ll need to think of building additional cemeteries.

What is great about this cemetery size

Small in size and undemanding in resources required to build it.
Excellent way of boosting your citizens’ happiness without spending any more resources or map space than the present situation requires.
Fits really well next to small churches or parishes. You can build them together, with a small cemetery right in the backyard of your church, to complete the set.
Although small, it’s sufficient for the first few decades when your citizens are still young and the death rate of old age is between low and zero.

4. The 10x10 cemetery

Building cemeteries near churches or cathedrals makes your city look more realistic.

The general rule I stick to when planning cemeteries in my town is, build every new cemetery slightly bigger than the previous one until you reach the maximum size allowed. There will come a time when your 7x7 cemetery is no longer big enough to fit any more graves, so you’ll know that it’s time to expand.

Here’s when you should think about building a 10x10 cemetery. It’s bigger, and with the increasing number of deaths (because of the increased population), it’s a good option to turn to. After all, it makes no sense to build as big a cemetery for 500 people as the one you build when you only had 100, right?

What is great about this cemetery size

It brings a more noticeable impact on the happiness of your citizens. When you had a few dozens of people, a 7x7 cemetery worked, but with the population of a couple of hundreds, you need more space for burying people. Don’t fall behind.
Although it’s bigger than a 7x7 cemetery, it is still simple and easy in building and does not need too much space.
You can build a new, bigger church that you haven’t built before, and place this new cemetery in its backyard. Perfect for a visit on a Sunday.

3. The 15x10 cemetery

A cemetery right in the middle of a city is a convenient location for your citizens to idle.

Your population is growing, your birth rate is growing, which also means your death rate is growing. You can’t be satisfied after building only 2 cemeteries. You can’t stop there. Well, not if you want to continue making your citizens happy.

A 15x10 cemetery, since it’s larger, offers space for a higher number of graves. Remember that the graves disappear over time, making space for new ones, and now, you have a whole lot of 3 cemeteries to do that. As long as you keep your people from starving or freezing to death, this should be enough for, let’s say, 250 people.

What is great about this cemetery size

It makes people happy. Yes, this doesn’t change from cemetery to cemetery. People in this game have spirituality. They want to have their spiritual needs met. By building cemeteries, you’re doing just that.
More space for future graves.
An amazing addition to a larger church or some jaw-droppingly impressive cathedral.

2. The 15x15 cemetery

Big cathedrals call for vast cemeteries.

By now, you may have, what, 400 citizens? 500?

Whatever the number, if you’re thinking about building yet another cemetery, it must be because there’s a need for it. Forget about sticking to the sizes that used to work for you when you had 100-150 people in your care. A 7x7 or a 10x10 won’t do. You need to think bigger. You need to build bigger.

This is where a 15x15 cemetery comes into the picture. It might be more time-consuming to build a cemetery of this size, but you can prepare the area in advance by removing all the resources from it to clear the space for your future graveyard. By the way, they will be plenty, so there’s another advantage for you!

What is great about this cemetery size

A significant impact on your citizens’ happiness. They will be happy to know that those who are gone can still be remembered, and this cemetery will serve as an excellent meeting point, a bridge between the living and the dead.
Clearing the area designated to the cemetery will bring you a lot of resources, such as logs or, for instance, stone, which you’ll definitely need to build the cemetery in the first place.
Turn your cemetery into a backyard for a cathedral as gigantic as the one I’ve built! Your citizens will definitely visit on a regular basis, just see if they don’t.
It’ll prove to be useful and functional for many years to come, and it will be a while before you’ll have to think about building another cemetery.

1. The 20x20 cemetery

This cemetery will one day become home for dozens and dozens of souls.

Is it time to welcome the biggest cemetery you will ever build? Yes, it looks like it is.

With hundreds (and I mean hundreds) of citizens under your control, you can’t be too generous in the space you provide for them to grieve and remember their deceased loved ones. Even a 15x15 cemetery can’t do the job anymore, so it is high time you invested in the biggest cemetery in your town.

Let me warn you right away: a 20x20 cemetery is a demanding little thing (well, not so little, I guess). It’s best to prepare in advance: clear the area where you plan to build the cemetery, stock up on stone as much as you can because building it will take a while. The bad news is, you can assign only 2 builders to do the job. The good news is, 2 builders are enough.

What is great about this cemetery size

Thanks to having to build this cemetery, you’ll get a ton of resources. Some of them will have to be spent on building the cemetery, but you’re gaining so much more than you’re spending.
What a massive boost of happiness this cemetery will bring to your city! Brand new space for graves and tombstones and a place for your citizens to idle during their free time - that is simply a must-built.
In addition to the practical use of such a large cemetery, it will look really Gothic and attractive next to the biggest churches that are even available to build in the game.

Just to clarify, there are no rules as to what sizes your cemeteries should be. You can easily build a random 8x13 or 20x11 cemetery just to feel in some empty space that’s not being used for anything else. But building these 5 cemeteries will really give your city a more neat, organized look, not to mention all the practical use of each of these cemeteries.

The Medieval Town mod is a large mod with many features. All of the buildings provide that medieval look, but aside from aesthetics, this is a very feature rich mod. The houses are bigger with more options. New production buildings and shops include a bakery, apothecary, barber shop, dentist, butcher shop, library, pond, and more. There are new vendor shops and town buildings, such as cloth store, stone vendor, water tower, and bathhouse.

This mod makes Banished even more fun by adding new professions, resources, ways for your villagers to be happier and healthier, and giving an overall better look to your town.

4. Japanese Houses

On the Eastern Front: try out the Japaneses themed buildings.

Tired of the medieval and old European look of your homes? Why not try the Japanese Houses mod! With this mod, three new styles of homes are added to the game. It includes thatched and tiled houses, which fit the same amount as usual. For something that fits even more family, it has included the row house. The row house can hold up to seven families, with four people per family.

This mod makes Banished even more fun by adding a unique variation to how the housing in the game appears. With the row houses, it makes life a bit easier by putting the housing of multiple families into one building.

3. Steph's Grain Silos

Storage Silos: this mod gives you two options for storage of grains and coal.

Wanting to store your grains somewhere other than the barn? If so, this mod is for you. The mod was specifically made to include two types of silos in the game: a grain silo and a coal silo. The grain silo will hold any kind of grain, such as corn and wheat, and has a massive capacity of 30,000. The coal silo works pretty much the same but instead stores coal.

This mod makes Banished even more fun by providing a better way to store grains and coal without having to worry about taking up room in your barns.

Wanting a whole new Banished experience? The CC: Journey mod acts as an expansion on an already fantastic game. A megamod in itself, there are new buildings, extensions of previous building chains, new professions, city wall buildings, and more. As well, it includes new starting conditions that will add a different way of playing the game. This is one of the most popular Banished mods, and you should try it out to see why.

The Mod to End All Mods! This megamod really does have it all!

Saving the best for last, the MegaMod was put together by the same modders that created the popular Colonial Charter mods. It has pretty much anything and everything you could want. It contains over 95 mods within the megamod, and is an overhaul of the game itself. Some of the included mods are Colonial Charter, Medieval Town, Debug Menu, Soup Kitchen, Fantasy Castle, ChooChoo, UI Improvements, EB Apothecary, and so much more. What Are The Best Crops in Banished?

Without a steady supply of food, your village simply won’t make it. To thrive, you must have two things: farmers and farms!

Crops and orchards will keep your villagers fed through those nasty winter months, so best get to planting in early spring if you don’t want to end up needing to make a cemetery early on in the game. If your farmers are educated and happy, you can actually go a little bigger since happy and healthy farmers are less likely to wander around idly and educated farmers can work faster. Just another thing to keep in mind while building up your village!

Farms in Banished consist of two types: crops and orchards. Fruits and nuts come from the orchards, while grains and veggies are planted in crops. Depending on your difficulty setting, your village will start off with one to two types of crop seeds and one orchard seed. All selected at random, of course. For all other seeds, you will need to build trade buildings and hope the right seeds come through.

How big should your fields be? Field sizes for all vegetable crops depend on how many farmers you plan on using per crop. For one farmer, a 7 x 8 or 4 x 14 field is the perfect size.

If you plan on using more farmers, try going with a bigger field! Sizing for orchards is a bit different compared to vegetable crops. Keep in mind that during the spring and summer seasons, there is no planting needing to be done by the farmers; just harvesting once the trees are mature. For a single farmer orchard plot, the best size is 15 x 4.

10. Pumpkin

Patience and Persistance: if you have these quality then pumpkin planting will pay off for you.

Pumpkins add a hearty variety to the diets of your villagers. These are a tricky vegetable to grow since they take the longest to be ready for harvest, but they provide the most food per square. While that seems tempting, users noticed t pumpkins are vulnerable to frost. An early frost or a frost snap during spring planting can wreak havoc on this crop. In other words, proceed with caution when planting pumpkins!

If your difficulty setting is at easy or medium, you may start with this seed type. Otherwise, you’re going to need to build a trading post and wait for these to show up with a merchant

9. Peppers

Stop the spread of disease in your crops by using peppers to seperate them.

Add some spice to your village with the pepper crop! This is a great crop to put in between other crops to help prevent the spread of blight (yes, you have to worry about infestations in your farm fields!). As a bonus, peppers have a relatively high yield. While it isn’t as high as beans (nothing is, I swear), it brings in about the same amount as both corn and cabbage, making those three nearly tied for second highest yield of all crops.

8. Apple

Plant an orchard so your villages get a wider variety of food.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away! Well, in Banished, having fruit added to the variety in the villagers' diet can help keep them happy and healthy. Fruits are a little bit trickier compared to vegetable crops since they are grown in orchards and will not start producing anything for anywhere from 3 to 7 seasons. However, it is worth investing in adding a fruit orchard if you have the available space. As a bonus, all fruits can be used in the tavern to make ale.

7. Corn

Corn should be a staple on any farm.

While not as hearty as the squash, corn is a rather reliable crop. Through rain and shine, the corn will grow. Corn is a great choice to provide your village with some veggies, especially when we consider that is one of the crops that are resistant to various weather conditions.

6. Potatoes

Potoato, potatoe, whose got the potatoes?

Good ol’ potatoes. They are great for everything. You can boil ‘em, mash ‘em, stick ‘em in a stew. And of course, you can keep your villagers fed with them! Potatoes have both a good and negative aspect to them. The bad thing is that they don’t provide as high of a yield compared to some other vegetables, but on the plus side, they are more resistant to early frost and can be harvested a bit longer into autumn compared to some other vegetables.

5. Cabbage

Frost resistant with a good yeild. Plant some cabbage today!

Cabbages are a hearty vegetable crop that can be harvested later than some others. This becomes quite useful if a frost snap occurs during the spring planting or if there is an early frost during the autumn harvest. As well, cabbages have a high yield. While not the highest, it nearly ties with two other crops for producing the most food.

4. Beans

While at risk from frost, beans have the best yeild.

Beans are a plentiful crop with one of the highest yield rates of all of the crops in Banished. There have even been some calculations done by other players that show it yields more than any other crop or orchard, and by quite a bit. They do well during rainy seasons and are generally ready for harvest early, but they don’t hold up to the cold very well, making an early frost a terrible thing. However, if you’re looking for quantity, this is the crop to go for!

3. Chestnuts

They may take longer to mature but chestnuts are great for a source of protein during those lean winters.

Chestnut trees are one of the three nut seeds available for orchard fields. Considering it is a nut, it has the added bonus of being a source of protein for your villagers. This is true for all of the nut type seeds. This is especially useful if you’re unable to kill off any livestock for some reason or if your hunters and fishermen aren’t bringing in enough meat. Depending on weather and if your orchard keeps away from infestations, the trees should mature within 3 to 5 seasons.

2. Squash

Plant a lot of squash as long as you have the farmers to work the fields.

Squash is a hearty crop that is an excellent choice for any village. One of the biggest perks of this crop is its ability to last longer in the field as temps start to drop. This is especially useful if an early frost occurs. If that happens to your village, some of the crops may become no good before the farmer has a chance to gather them. This isn’t as likely to happen with the almighty squash! Considering how well squash holds up against early frost and if you’re lucky enough to have this seed and enough available farmers, you should consider having a crop field big enough for two or three farmers, or make multiple single farmer fields

1. Wheat

Bottom Line: you must plant wheat. Ensure your villagers have ale!

Wheat is kind of overpowered. It grows relatively fast with a large yield. Even better, it is the only crop that can be used for ale at the taverns! Considering crops have a higher return and start growing the first season you plant them, if you are wanting ale for your village (and of course you are!), wheat is the way to go.
