[Top 10] Best Old School RPGs for PC

The technology available to game developers today is really incredible.

The games coming out now immerse players by providing beautifully rendered environments, complete with changing weather, day and night cycles, and realistic ambient noises, that the player can really appreciate as they go through the game. When you factor in the revolutionary potential of virtual reality, the possibilities for making a player feel like they are “really there” seem to be almost limitless.

That said, most of my favorite games are still older titles, some dating back as far as the 80s and 90s. These games did not have the benefit of the high quality graphics and audio available today, but what these games lack in glamor, they more than make up for in their quality and depth.

So, the question now is what are some great older games you should go check out? I’m so glad that you asked!

#10) Dungeon Hack (PC)

True to its name, Dungeon Hack is unique because it doesn’t rely on a storyline to keep players engaged; in fact it has practically no plot at all. You’re an adventurer, hired by an unnamed sorceress, to retrieve a magical orb from a dungeon full of traps and monsters… that’s all there is to it. Instead of a deep story, the game leans on its random dungeon generator to provide players with a different experience each time they start a game, including a different style and layout for the dungeon, different traps and monsters, and a random boss at the end of each game. Brilliant in its simplicity, and with a clean user interface that’s easy to use, Dungeon Hack is a great option for a quick and satisfying game with little commitment.

#9) Pool of Radiance (PC)

The first computer game to be based on Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (AD&D) rules, Pool of Radiance is the foundation upon which many later RPGs were built. The player creates a party of up to six characters from various races and classes and starts the adventure in the city of New Phlan on the coast of the Moonsea in the D&D Forgotten Realms setting. The interface takes some getting used to, but once you get the hang of it, it is surprisingly easy to use and the game is more than worth the trouble.

The party comes across Ohlo in the slums of New Phlan and is offered a job. Sorry for kicking your door in, Ohlo, we thought this place was abandoned….

#8) Realms of Arkania: Blade of Destiny (PC)

Realms of Arkania actually shares a lot in common with games like Pool of Radiance, having similar gameplay and requiring the player to build a party of up to six characters from different races and classes. Realms of Arkania is based on a German pen and paper system called The Dark Eye, and offers some different choices for races, classes, and abilities. One of the most intriguing differences is the use of negative attributes in character creation, such as various phobias, greed, or a bad temper, that balance the positive attributes and have real effects on gameplay.

#7) The Magic Candle (PC)

There’s no way around it, playing The Magic Candle can be very frustrating. But the same things that make it so aggravating are also what make this game so rewarding. You are Lukas, a ranger who’s been chosen to lead an expedition to discover what’s happened to the guardians of the eponymous Magic Candle before it melts and releases a powerful demon back into the world. To succeed you’ll need to manage your time and resources, plan for anything, and keep your cool when things go terribly wrong. Buy a rope as soon as you can. You never know when you’ll be a half-continent away from the nearest city and need one… trust me.

Lukas’s party encounters a group of wolfinga in the wilderness. Though not particularly dangerous, they are obnoxiously hard to hit.

#6) Icewind Dale (PC / macOS)

Icewind Dale takes place in the harsh frozen lands in the northern part of Faerûn of the Forgotten Realms setting. Built with the Infinity Engine used to make Baldur’s Gate (see below), the game shares the same interface and game mechanics, but where the player builds a single character in BG and recruits companions as they go, in Icewind Dale the player designs the whole party from the start. The game features a gloomy, cold, stark feel that is perfect for the setting and a plot that gets really good, especially as the game progresses.

#5) Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura (PC)

In Arcanum, the player is thrown head-first into a world where magic and technology clash, each causing the other to fail, sometimes with catastrophic results. Are you a mage? You’re not allowed on the train, your magical attunement could cause the engine to explode. Are you a genius inventor? Don’t bother drinking that healing potion, it might as well be water. As the lone survivor of an airship crash, and begged by a dying passenger to deliver a message, you must rely on magic, or technology, or a happy balance of both to survive.

A common sight in Arcanum: a person in full-plate standing behind someone in a trenchcoat who is trying to purchase a ticket for a train.

#4) Fallout: A Post Nuclear Role Playing Game (PC / macOS)

The original epic tale of the “Vault Dweller,” who ventures forth from Vault 13, alone and unafraid, into a radioactive hell-hole in search of the elusive “water-chip.” Its high points are its excellent turn-based combat system (one of the best), a massive post-apocalyptic wasteland to explore, and a simple but effective bartering system that allows you to trade with literally anyone who’s not trying to kill you. Word to the wise, don’t stand between your allies and the enemy… their aim’s not the best and they love to go full-auto.

#3) Baldur’s Gate (PC / macOS)

One of the most famous, highly-praised, and continuously played games ever made, Baldur's Gate’s reputation as a masterpiece is well-deserved. With an epic main storyline, numerous well-rounded companions to choose from, a badass main villain, tons of side-quests, and seemingly infinite replay value, Baldur’s Gate is worth hundreds of hours of gameplay.

#2) Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn & Throne of Bhaal (PC / macOS / Linux)

How do you improve on something as perfect as Baldur’s Gate? You keep all the great stuff that works, then you add more classes and subclasses, powerful new items and spells, new companions, a fresh new setting, titanic monsters that mere mortals have no business fighting, and a main bad guy that’s great at getting on your bad side.

One of the titanic monsters I mentioned in the description. This may actually be one of the weaker ones.

#1) Planescape: Torment (PC / macOS / Linux / iOS / Android / Switch / PS4 / Xbox One)

My very favorite, the story of the amnesiac “Nameless One” for whom dying is just a minor setback. Set in the D&D Planescape setting, the game features a fascinating setting, powerful competing factions, unique and interesting characters, and the best and most original plot of any game ever (in my not-so-humble opinion). The game is a little dialogue heavy, but it uses this to draw the player in and give them real influence over their companions and the game. Don’t worry about dying, it won’t slow you down much.

These games won’t be winning any awards for their looks (at least not anymore), but they still have a lot to offer if you’re looking for a great game with an epic story to tell. I encourage you to check these out, and to look past their outdated graphics and sometimes clunky interfaces; it's worth the trouble.

With an almost unlimited amount of customization, from classes and race to skills and spells, the adventure is truly your own.

Be prepared for creatures of every shape and size, and watch out for those feet!

8. Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition

This re-release of the 1999 RPG is a story-driven cult classic which follows the tale of The Nameless One, an immortal man on a quest to solve the mystery of his origins despite his complete amnesia. The turn-based gameplay focuses mainly on story and exploration with the aid of companions who can be collected into the party along the way.

Same great story: This classic game has been remastered for smooth, vivid gameplay.

Extensive options for dialogue allow the player to interact with their own unique personalities.

7. Eitr

Eitr is the pixel art style action RPG which follows the story of a Shield Maiden on a quest to save the Norse world tree, Yggdrasil, after it is poisoned by the corrupting Eitr substance. This two-dimensional adventure features tactically focused combat which requires precision and timing with the use of magic, weapons, and armor. Great skill will be needed to brave the phantoms and save the nine Norse worlds, but this Shield Maiden is certainly up to the task.

The pixel art style is a bold choice, but a welcome callback to gaming origins.

With the nine realms at stake, not even the giants can slow you down!

6. Wasteland 3

Set to release in 2019, this third installment of the Wasteland series continues the story of the world ravaged by the 1998 nuclear war, this time set in the frozen landscape of Colorado. Like its predecessors, this is a party-based RPG with tactical combat, now updated to feature environmental dangers, vehicles, and a more fluid action system.

Not in the desert anymore: This frozen wasteland comes with a unique set of challenges.

With the addition of vehicular transport, we’d better keep an eye out for icy roads!

5. Tower of Time

The Tower of Time is a tactical, real-time combat RPG set in an era of famine and ruin where humans struggle to survive the elements. The player begins as the leader of a group of heroes who work together to unearth the secrets of a mysterious tower through a series of quests and challenges, all to carry on the hope for the betterment of humanity.

Watch those fangs: With all manner of creature residing in the mysterious tower, it helps to have a mystic in the party.

The challenges ahead are creatively intricate and it’ll take a team to work them out.

4. The Age of Decadence

This turn-based single player game is set in a fantasy post-apocalyptic land inspired by the fall of the Roman Empire. The use of extensive dialogue trees, an incredibly detailed skill system, and a focus on actions-equal-consequences gameplay makes for an immersive experience and uniquely crafted storyline which ultimately affects the future of this devastated world.

Look familiar? The Roman-inspired style and design adds a unique element to this familiar piece of history.

Good games like these never get old!

With exciting new games coming out all the time, sometimes being a gamer can be overwhelming. You never know if that new release you just dished out sixty bucks for will be worth it or if it will be bland, not daring to innovate or gratify you.

But then there’s the oldies – the classic games you know are incredible, those that have stood the test of time. Their mechanics have held up, the storylines are still enriching, and their art styles are impressive even today.

While it is rare that something leaves such a lasting impression in a field that is being revolutionized all the time, these ten games have done exactly that. They were great when they came out, they continue to be great like a fine wine, and yes, you should definitely play them right now.

These classics are more than worth checking out for the first time –and are due for another look if you have played them already!

1. XCOM: Enemy Unknown

Released in 2012, XCOM: Enemy Unknown is not the oldest game on the list, but its difficult and tactical gameplay makes it a true classic!

To put it simply, Enemy Unknown is a turn-based tactical game that also relies on roleplaying elements to reach full impact. There are options for both single-player and multiplayer experiences, which is but one of many testaments to the game’s versatility.

At release, it received immediate praise from critics and was the recipient of many Game of the Year awards in 2012. The reasons for Enemy Unknown’s acclaim include radical replayability and how easy it is to become absorbed in the game. And of course we all love the difficulty setting that features permadeath and only allows players a single save game – no reloading!

XCOM: Enemy Unknown’s sequel, XCOM 2, is set to be released just a couple months from now in November 2015! There is no better time than now to play the original classic.

2. Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings

An epic beginning

Age of Empires II is an irregularity in gaming! It was first released for PC in 1999, nearly sixteen years ago, but, thanks to Steam, has been revived with new expansions and a HD Edition over the past couple of years.

That revival makes perfect sense; The Age of Kings is a real-time strategy game that transformed its genre and, as a result, will never get old. Love for this classic game has stayed very strong over the last decade.

Taking place in the Middle Ages, each specialized story in Age of Empires II is centered on history. Players control one of thirteen civilizations and, using resources acquired through gameplay, defeat the empire’s enemies with their armies. It is riveting and relies on careful choices to find success!

If you decide to play this game, you won’t regret it!

3. Transport Tycoon

Now for mobile phones!

Transport Tycoon is a very early business simulation game. And when I say early, I mean early. It’s older than I am!

The goal of the game is simple: control a transportation company and get as much profit as possible doing it. You acquire that oh-so-coveted money by picking up people or goods to move along from one station to the next.

What makes Transport Tycoon so special is that there are few games that rival what it is doing. It is rewarding, educational, and fun. Definitely give this classic game a try!

4. Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn

If you are a fan of roleplaying games, you know that Baldur’s Gate II is among the best of the best. For originally being released in 2000, its approximately 300 hours of gameplay is beyond remarkable. Modern BioWare fans may also find it interesting that Shadows of Amn is one of the developer’s earliest games.

Baulder’s Gate II offers everything a roleplaying game should have and does it very well: extensive character creation, conversations among your NPC group members, a leveling system, a large environment, and more. Its scale and scope is epic. In fact, everything about it is epic.

There is nothing quite like Baulder’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn. It is a must-play for every gamer out there, particularly RPG fans!

5. Deus Ex

Truly a classic.

Deus Ex is often regarded as one of the best PC games of all time – if not the ultimate best. It incorporates elements of our favorite genres, like RPGs, action games, and first person shooters.

But Deus Ex is much more than that; it has a larger-than-life plot with epic action that the first person perspective entrenches you in. Players take on the role of an “augmented” agent, who, using his nanotech-powered skills, seeks to defeat terrorism and a multitude of other enemies throughout the game. Ultimately, the player’s decisions are what determines the ending of their play-through and overall destiny.

This is one game you cannot miss out on! Despite being released in 2000, Deus Ex is more than worth playing in 2015.

6. Day of the Tentacle

Not like most games!

n the realm of point-and-click adventure games, Day of the Tentacle is a number one classic!

Players work to prevent a giant Purple Tentacle from overwhelming and conquering the entire world. That is exactly the sort of quirky humor to expect from Day of the Tentacle, and it is hilarious. The fun puzzles and comedy are what make the game so great, especially with the inclusion of time travel as a main feature.

Twenty-two years after release, and Day of the Tentacle is still worth playing! Definitely check it out if you’re a fan of games like the Sam & Max series, Grim Fandango, and Broken Age.

7. Syndicate

Also released in 1993, Syndicate is an exciting real-time tactical game developed by Bullfrog Productions. Don’t think that just because it is a tactical game that it isn’t fun! Perhaps the best part of Syndicate is how the gameplay resembles a shoot-em-up with its fast and furious pace.

It gives off an interesting cyberpunk vibe. Players go through dangerous missions to eventually conquer the entire world through stealthy, violent, and coercive means.

Syndicate will make you feel powerful – large and in charge! There’s no reason not to play this amazing classic right now; it is free for PC on EA Origin!

8. Half-Life

Half-Life has had some outstanding trailers throughout the years.

Half-Life, released in 1998, accomplished an incredible feat. By revolutionizing the entire first person shooter genre, it has achieved its brilliant legacy as an instant classic. It is clearly one of the best PC games of all time, and there is no reason not to have played it or to not replay it right now!

The game takes place in the Black Mesa Research Facility, home to the creepy science-fiction goodness that we all know and love about Half-Life. Its shooting is exceptional, the enemies are unique, and players cannot help but be lured into its immersive environment. Furthermore, Half-Life is more than just a shooter; puzzles and lack of organized ‘levels’ tie in elements of other beloved game genres.

The most famous weapon from Half-Life is the crowbar, which has become an icon in the gaming community. Gordon Freeman, the game’s main character, is also a significant gaming figure.

Seriously – if you haven’t played Half-Life, just go do it. Right now. Half-Life is more than just a classic, it is a life-changing and literal game-changing experience.

9. Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos

An amazing opening to an amazing game

Ever wondered about installments in the Warcraft universe other than World of Warcraft? If so, Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos is probably where you should begin your search.

Put out by Blizzard Entertainment in July 2002, Warcraft III features many of the easily recognizable Warcraft elements, like certain races (Humans, Orcs, Undead, and Night Elves) and some cool places in the world of Azeroth. Experiencing Reign of Chaos will actually give interesting hide sight information to those who have previously only played WoW. That background story, by the way, is told through movie-like cut scenes that were breath-taking in its day.

Reign of Chaos is not a roleplaying game or an MMO, though. It is a real-time strategy game, where players control various units and buildings to manage resources on the map. While that is relatively simple, it is done well, making Warcraft III one of the most solid strategy games of all time.

Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos introduces a story still relevant to gamers and boasts gameplay mechanics that hold up for modern players today. Moreover, it is the first true hit, the first best seller, in the Warcraft universe, and there is a natural progression into World of Warcraft. Definitely check it out right now!

10. Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2

EA Games was also interested in real-time strategy games at the turn of the century. Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 is a product of that, and it has even received comparisons to Blizzard’s game StarCraft.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 offers two factions that players can play as. Their choice determines the destiny of their game, because each has its own distinctive plot and campaign, and is designed in an alternate-ending mode.

This level of choice is unusual, but impressive, for a real-time strategy game! Clearly, Red Alert 2 was made for replayability, so pick it up and give it a play now too!
