Your quest in Baldur’s Gate will only succeed with the aid of a strong party. Whether you’re a charging warrior or a defensive mage, having a team backing you up in your quest is essential for survival. Thankfully, you don’t have to settle for a few characters and have plenty of companions.

But which companions do you choose? Which one is right for your type of playthrough? And which one talks to a hamster? We’ll answer all those questions in this guide to the best companions you can find in Baldur’s Gate.

1. Dorn Il-Khan

Those who want much power during their evil playthroughs look further for strength than Dorn Il-Khan. This half-orc paladin is neutral evil and has a strength level of 19, making him one of the most powerful companions in the game. You can find him at the Friendly Arm Inn.

Dorn is not only powerful but influential as well. You may notice he has a charisma level of 16, meaning he can strike fear into the world and let everybody know you’re not to be messed with. He also requires a certain level of evil as he can’t stand your party if your reputation reaches level 18. He’s a fearless warrior that also boasts a poison weapon ability. When heading into combat, this guy should be your second in command charging into battle.

2. Neera

Neera is a real wild card as a Wild Mage that is chaotic neutral. She’s a half-elf that specializes in magic but rolls the dice with nearly every cast. She’s also more interesting as one of the newest additions to Baldur’s Gate, having been added to the Enhanced Editions. She can be found during Chapter 1 when you enter Beregost.

Her Wild Surge ability allows her to cast a number of spells that could either fail or be boosted. She can be a risky character for this ability but one that is worth the risk if you prefer to play dangerously. Keep her as a secret weapon, providing a variety of spells when needed. She’s a lot of fun as an unpredictable mage with some genuine surprises to her character.

3. Minsc

As one of the quirkiest characters in the game, Minsc is just an eccentric and neutral/chaotic good ranger who is absurdly devoted to doing the right thing. He also really loves his hamster named Boo. You can find him in Nashkel as he’s currently on a quest to find his beloved Dynaheir

What Minsc lacks in wisdom and intelligence he more than compensates for with his strength, dexterity, and constitution. He’s that gentle giant who isn’t always so gentle, considering he possesses the ability to go berserk. He’s strong enough to use most weapons and makes for a great tank. Also, he is voiced by Jim Cummings (better known as the voice of Pete from Goof Troop or Pooh from Winnie The Pooh) and it’s always a lot of fun to hear his big and bold voice throughout the game.

4. Baeloth Barrityl

If you want a genuinely evil companion, it’s hard to top Baeloth. He’s a chaotic evil male drow sorcerer that you can find in Larswood in Chapter 1. His stats are surprisingly balanced (although his intelligence is the highest at 19), and he can learn some powerful spells early in the game. His strength is only at 12, so you’ll probably still want to keep him more as support.

Gruff and vicious, Shar-Teel Dosan is a chaotic evil human fighter who is quite the fighter. She has 17 dexterity and 18/58 strength. You can find her during Chapter 1 in the Mutamin's Garden area, east of the Temple area. She can dual as a thief to make her more useful for detecting traps and unlocking doors. That being said, she has an incredibly low constitution so you’re going to want to load her up with armor.

6. Kivan

For a ranger with some kick, Kivan is your man. The chaotic good elf ranger is very much in tune with nature, considering his remarkable ability to charm animals. You can find him in the High Hedge area during Chapter 1. He’s highly skilled with strength at 18 and dexterity at 17. One aspect to be aware of is how fast Kivan levels up, making him powerful quickly.

7. Ajantis Ilvastarr

Ajantis is a pretty vanilla companion on the surface. He’s a human male that’s a lawful good paladin. Though his skills are not unique, his stats are surprisingly strong. He has a 17 for charisma, a 17 for strength, and a 16 for the constitution. You can easily send that pretty beefy paladin to the front as a tank. You’ll find Ajantis near the Fishing Village north of the Friendly Arm Inn.

8. Montaron

Montaron is a neutral evil halfling multi-class fighter/thief with a mouth on him. He’s also the perfect grump compared to his quirky wizard pal Xzar. You’ll run into them both in Candlekeep Coastway during Chapter 1. His high constitution of 15 makes him able to withstand the toughest of attacks. He also has some formidable strength at 16 and dexterity at 17. He’s a great tank to have on an evil run as well as a quality thief.

9. Kagain

As a lawful evil dwarf fighter, Kagain is a companion driven by greed. You’ll find him during Chapter 1 at the shop next door to Feldepost’s Inn. And you’ll undoubtedly want to check him out, given his stats.

He has a strength of 16, a constitution of 20, and intelligence of 15. His HP levels are high, and he’ll also regenerate his HP at 1 per minute. He’s also more willing to stick around despite his evil nature, hanging on until your reputation level reaches 19. So even if you’re going for a good run, he’s worth having for a while, especially for the more dangerous fights.

A bit of a sly devil, Eldoth is a neutral evil human bard who knows how to party. You can find him during Chapter 4 in the Cloakwood countryside, scheming to blackmail his lover’s father. He has the highest charisma in the game at 16 and also has a strength of 16 and a constitution 15. He’s a schemer that can bring you great riches but also cast some handy spells as well. 11. Yeslick Orothiar

There’s a good balance to this lawful good dwarven multi-class fighter/cleric. He can be found on the second level of Cloakwood Mine in Chapter 4. His high constitution 17 makes him ideal for battle as much as his solid strength of 15. He’s especially handy for tackling mages with his ability to dispel magic. Think of him as the fighter you want to be your top guy for taking down magical enemies.

12. Rasaad yn Bashir

Rasaad is the lawful good human sun soul monk you can find during Chapter 2 outside the Nashkel Inn. He doesn’t have much for abilities, but his strength and dexterity are set relatively high at 16, and his constitution, wisdom, and charisma are 14. He’s also pretty well armored with his Moonlight Walkers. There’s not much to him, but he’s a solid choice for a strong monk to lead the charge.

13. Jaheira

Despite being true neutral, there’s a lot of spirit and strength to this half-elf multi-class fighter/druid. You won’t have to look far for her as you’ll find her at the Friendly Arm Inn. She’s useful as both a skilled warrior and a spell-weaving druid that is quite formidable.

Jaheira used to come as a packaged deal with her husband Khalid. At the same time, he was a strong fighter but also weak-willed and could be spooked easily. Though Jaheira is neutral, she’s keener to follow you if you take the path of good.

Just like with Montaron, you can recruit him early during Chapter One in the Candlekeep Coastway. He can gain some pretty powerful spells but he’ll take some time to build up. His HP is rather low and so is his constitution. He’s decent as a support mage but not exactly someone you want taking the blows. Keep him positioned behind Montaron.

16. Garrick

If you find your party requires an extra boost in morale, why not take on a bard? And if you’re seeking the best bard, Garrick is one of the most balanced and versatile, being a chaotic neutral human. You can find him just outside The Burning Wizard in Beregost during Chapter 1 during the battle over Silke.

Garrick doesn’t exactly have many special skills aside from typical bard abilities to conjure songs that will ward off fear. That being said, he’s a reliable character who is willing to work with certain reputations. Be mindful of certain evil characters that he might not get along with. He’s best paired with Minsc and Jaheira, both of which enjoy his company.

17. Coran

Coran is an excellent choice if you want to play with a good alignment and need an expert marksman. He’s a chaotic good multi-class fighter/thief, so you probably already guessed he’s skilled with bows, having a dexterity level of 20. He’s so good that he can even use composite bows when strong enough. You can find him in Cloakwood during Chapter 4, requesting to go on a quest for a dragon’s head.

Coran is one of the strongest elves you can find in the game as an expert archer. In addition to having some strong thief skills, he also has a +3 to-hit with ranged weapons. He takes some time to build up to his full potential, but he’s such a powerful elf you’ll wonder how you were ever able to play the game without him.

18. Xan

Loaded with wisdom and snark, Xan is a lawful neutral elf enchanter who can be helpful. Despite his pessimism and limitation of spells, the ones he can cast are rather powerful. Xan can be found at the end of Chapter 2 in the Nashkel Mines.

Xan will not start all that powerful at first, but he does come packaged with the Moonblade, found adjacent to him in the Nashkel Mines throne room. You can use this weapon to have Xan attack lower-level enemies and make him resistant to fire. As you level up the sorcerer, he’ll learn more spells that can make him quite the powerful wizard. He’s a character built for the long haul, especially when decked out in magical attire that improves his powers.

One of her unique abilities is to summon a Dread Wolf. Her strength is decent at 12 but her charisma and dexterity are high at 16 for both. She’s one of the most powerful healers you can have in your party so she’s more than worth considering being a prime companion.

Skie is a companion who is more of an investment than a fighter. One would expect that with her being a true neutral human thief, more focused on hiding in the shadows than fighting in the light. Her blackmail skills will keep you rich with easy access to money.

23. Dynaheir

If you take on Minsc as a companion, you will end up with Dynaheir on your team, and she’s worth the packaged deal. As a female human and lawful good invoker mage, she’ll join up with you in Chapter 2 after she’s rescued from the Gnoll Stronghold, per Minsc’s quest. She has the highest HP bonus and can cast a variety of spells. She’s not all that strong but does have Minsc to back her up. Use for her support.

24. Viconia DeVir

Even villains need a good healer, and one of the best is Viconia DeVir. This neutral evil drow cleric has switched evil masters but is willing to go along with your party. You can find her at the northwest corner of the Peldvale area, being pursued by some Flaming Fist soldiers. If you don’t mind that she’s a murderer, as the soldiers tell you, consider her part of your evil party.

Viconia has one of the highest stats for dexterity in the game, clocking in at 19. She’s also highly resistant to magic with a 50% resistance. This is good news if you encounter a lot of wizards but bad news if you have to heal her with a spell. She may not have as much strength as most clerics but she can be well-armed enough to fight on the frontlines. You’ll want to arm her with an Ankheg plate to make her the most effective tank.

Imoen is undoubtedly one of the more reliable thieves you can have in your party as the first companion. As a neutral good human thief, she has a childhood attachment to your character and is likelier to follow you through thick and thin. You don’t have to go hunting for her either, as she’s one of the first people you’ll meet in Baldur’s Gate.

Imoen is a steadfast thief with all the essential thief abilities. She’s handy with a few weapons (short bows and short swords) and is dual class, meaning you can give her some mage abilities as well. Imoen is also a compelling character to keep simply because she doesn’t have much of a reputation, being shaped the same way you shape your own. While you’ll have to work for your party around certain characters, Imoen feels like raw clay you can mold to be any type of dual-class thief you wish.

Edwin has a high ego and does not get along with the more good or neutral party members. But if you’re planning on taking the path of darkness, he can be the handiest companion in your arsenal. We all enter the world of Baldur’s Gate the same. We watch our mentor get murdered and then seek aid in our quest to rid evil from the land. The last thing anybody wants is for that quest to come to an early end because you weren’t properly armed.

While the best defense may be a good offense, it doesn’t hurt to have the best armor for your party. But you won’t find most of the game’s best armor available at shops. If you truly want the best that the game has to offer, you’ll have to do some exploring. Here’s our handy guide for finding the best armor in Baldur’s Gate.

1. Mithral Chain Mail

For the most powerful chain mail you can wear in Baldur’s Gate, none are better than the Mithral Chain Mail. This +4 chain mail is just as strong as full plate armor but far more lightweight. It also allows your thieves to still perform all their thieving duties, making it ideal for thieving dual-class characters. Keep your thieves well protected while still being able to do all their amazing thief abilities.

How To Get It.

Here’s how hard this armor is to get. You’ll have to kill Drizzt, one of the most powerful characters in the game. It won’t be easy, but it’s absolutely worth the brutal battle to acquire this exceptional piece of armor.

2. Karajah's Life and Death

For the lightest of armor, seek out the one piece of armor that sounds like somebody’s memoirs; Karajah's Life and Death. It’s an enchanted leather armor +3 is lightweight and allows for thieves to still use all their thieving abilities. It may not be as protective as some other leather armors, but the light weight makes it perfect for parties who need all the pack space they can muster.

How To Get It.

You can find the armor on the fourth labyrinth level of Durlag's Tower in the rune carpet room, locked in a chest.

3. The Practical Defense

Once worn by the dwarf Bolhur the Clanless, The Practical Defense is one of the best plate mails you can find in all of Baldur’s Gate, making the name a bit more humble. It’s a Plate Mail +3 with an armor class of 0, making it incredibly protective. It’s also one of the heaviest at 18 lbs.

How To Get It.

You’ll find this armor on the second labyrinth level of Durlag's Tower in the master bedroom, locked in a chest.

4. Protector of the Second

Dragon Age Inquisition was released in 2014, and ever since fans have been aching for a new game in the well-beloved series.

The more we wait, the more new games come out that may fill the void the dark, interesting, comforting world of Dragon Age left us. Here are 15 games that may fit those criteria.

15.Yakuza

Yakuza Gameplay

The Yakuza series is one of the most popular beat-em-ups in the modern-day. Set in a fictional Japanese town, you play as Ichiban Kasuga, a Yakuza member who was asked to go to jail for a crime he did not commit to protect the actual killer. There are eight main titles in the Yakuza series, all with a rich open world and engaging story. The side quests are usually where people differ as they take a more wacky, silly twist that contrasts against the game’s serious main plot.

Yakuza is probably the least like Inquisition on this list, but it’s still a charming and entertaining game in its own right. With its in-depth story and well-written characters, the beat-em-up titles can give the same charming feeling as the Dragon Age series.

14. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Gameplay

Sliding back into the fantasy genre, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is another game with heavy east Asian influence. As a samurai named “The Wolf,” you wander an ancient Japanese-inspired world killing tough monsters and save a young boy you know of as your master. The game has combat similar to the Dark Souls series, with tough-as-nails enemies and quick, reflexive controls that allow you to slash and dodge with skill.

The deep lore and story of this game is more than enough to keep you engaged. The beautiful, Sengoku period designs are a treat to move around and explore, and though there aren’t many RPG elements, the game does offer plenty of items and combat moves that make you feel like the powerful samurai you are. Careful if you’re more of a casual gamer, however, because the combat system and high mortality rate of this game is not for the faint of heart!

13. Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor

Shadow of Mordor is set in the Lord of the Rings universe, which is already a treat for longtime fantasy fans. The promise of Tolkien’s world means deep, intrinsic lore, and Shadow of Mordor clings to its roots with a dark twist. Talion is a guard of Gondor who loses his family in an Orc raid and is kept from death by merging with a mysterious spirit known as Celebrimbor. You travel around Mordor, killing orcs and finding clues as to Celebrimbor’s true identity.

Shadow of Mordor is a fantastic adventure game, with sleek, entertaining combat that can keep you playing for hours on end. The nemesis system within the game makes it extremely fun to kill Orc captains one by one, moving up the ranks to get to the nastier Orcs at the top. The Wraith abilities allow you to slow time to shoot mystical arrows or teleport behind enemies for a nasty kill, and you can use runes found by killing Orc captains to upgrade your weapons and unlock special abilities.

12. Middle Earth: Shadow of War

The sequel to Shadow of Mordor, Shadow of war is more of the same exciting gameplay with a few extra twists. I won’t go too in-depth on plot since the game is tied to Shadow of Mordor, but you do get to explore an open world full of parkouring abilities as you continue the search to find a cure for Talion’s undeath.

The satisfying fighting and rich lore of the first game continues fully into this one. The nemesis system, which was very popular before, has been upgraded into being able to gather and control your own armies, sending hordes of Uruks into enemy fortresses to destroy them from the inside. The open world is fun and interesting to explore, and Talion’s parkour abilities allow the player the freedom to go practically anywhere they choose.

11. Monster Hunter: World

Do you like the idea of gathering massive swords, guns, and other weapons, going out into the dense wilderness and finding massive monsters to kill? Then the Monster Hunter series are the games for you! As the title says, Monster Hunter: World is a world in which you hunt monsters for a living, plain and simple. Gather items and eat delicious food to get certain bonuses and head out into the jungle to track down your prey.

The Monster Hunter: World environment is colorful and vibrant, with quirky characters and an adorable design that still manages to make the more fearsome enemies foreboding. You can gain resources to craft different armor and weapons, each with different stats of varying use, and with its online servers, you can get your friends to join in on the hunt.

10. Assassin’s Creed: Origins

Assassin’s Creed: Origins Gameplay

Set in ancient Egypt, Bayak sets out on a quest for vengeance and, in doing so, finds the order that started it all. Assassin’s Creed: Origins has all of the factors fans love: parkour, stealth, smooth combat with easy controls. The kicker is that this is the first game to start to integrate RPG elements into its gameplay, like finding new weapons and armor and offering upgrades if enough resources are collected.

Taking over bases and climbing around Egypt is intensely fun in Origins. The more involved combat keeps players engaged and, with a skill tree, your progress is easily seen. The plot is full of interesting characters, with Bayak being a charming but non-cookie-cutter protagonist and is full of the same interesting historical facts found in most Assassin’s Creed games, which is enough to keep you coming back for more.

9. The Outer Worlds

The Outer Worlds Gameplay

The Outer Wilds is a Sci-Fi FPS RPG, which is a lot of letters for one game. You are a space colonist and awaken from cryosleep and spend the day exploring alien planets trying to figure out a conspiracy you’re thrust into. As an RPG, you can gather companions to help you on your quests and explore a wide-open world filled with side quests and interesting characters.

The Outer Wilds has big Fallout vibes, with many people citing both the original games and, specifically, the renowned New Vegas, and it’s clear to see why. The character creation is in-depth and interesting, allowing you to create a dozen of interesting protagonists including the crowdfavorite stupid character, which unlocks specific dialogue that you can use. From the gritty sci-fi setting to the ability to target different parts of your enemies’ bodies to cripple their limbs, those who enjoy the older RPGs made by Bioware will no doubt love The Outer Wilds.

8. Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord

Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord Gameplay

Banerlord is an early access army simulator, where you gather and control your own medieval army and strategize against opposing forces. It focuses on tactics but also has a very interesting character creator where the ability to change your character’s background and parents can affect what stats you start with. As it’s not yet finished, the game doesn’t have everything you could want in a war simulator, but for what it has it is well worth a look.

The addition of backgrounds to your protagonist is one of my favorite things an RPG can do, so it’s a welcome sight in this game. Looking at it, it seems the developers of Mount & Blade are heading into a medieval life simulation sort of direction, and I am very glad to see that. Adding a life simulation function could turn this already diverse game into something great.

7. Star Wars: The Old Republic

Another throwback for this list, SWOTOR (as the fans call it) is an MMORPG in the Star Wars universe. During a truce between the Empire and the Republic after the Sith reemerges, you can explore an interesting Online world and complete dozens of side quests alongside compelling characters.

This game may not look like much with its aged graphics but ask any fan and they’ll tell you that what SWOTOR lacks in design it makes up in gameplay. The storytelling is unlike any other Star Wars game and keeps players interested the entire way through, alongside many side quests in this wide-open world. SWOTOR has been released on Steam as a free-to-play game, so check it out if you’re interested in exploring this iconic world and plotline.

6. Dark Souls III

The Dark Souls series is known for its amazingly hard combat system, complex lore, and dark fantasy dripping with grotesque monsters. The lore is so complex, hidden away in brief conversations or item descriptions, that for simplicity’s sake I’ll keep the plot description vague. You are an undead warrior who is charged with continuing the cycle of lighting the flame and waiting for it to burn again to let another hero rise.

Like Sekiro, Dark Souls III is not for newcomers, even though some Souls fans describe it as one of the easier titles. It’s full of difficult boss battles and tricky encounters, but the beautiful, haunting design and rich writing can still be enough to pull some newbies in. The dark fantasy aspect is one of my favorite parts, as the darker parts of the Dragon Age games are overlooked, and with the interesting stories behind everything you encounter, Dark Souls III is definitely a game worth checking out.

5. Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey

Odyssey was a genre-defying installment in the Assassin’s Creed series. It went away from theclassic action gameplay and moved towards a heavier implementation of RPG factors. You parkour around Ancient Greece as either Alexius or Cassandra, marking this as the first Assassin’s Creed game to let you choose who your protagonist is. Either Alexius or Cassandra are descendants of Leonidas, working as mercenaries in their town.

This is the first Assassin’s Creed game to allow you to have relationships with NPCs, further pushing it towards the RPG genre. Armors and weapons are available to find in the open world, with a long plot to keep you interested. As with most open worlds, side quests are everywhere in Odyssey, allowing you to sneak, parkour, and fight your way through opposing mercenaries in the beautiful recreation of Greece.

4. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels, The Witcher 3 follows Geralt of Riva, a mutant with the powers to kill other horrors of the land as he searches to find an old ward. This game is acclaimed by nearly everyone who plays it, and it’s obvious why. It’s gorgeous, with a flowing, challenging combat style and interesting characters that tie into an engaging plot of dark fantasy goodness.

The thing everyone screams about with the Witcher 3 is the side quests. The main plot is compelling and full of twists, and the side quests are known for their writing that is just as good. No fetch quests or unnecessary fluff, each quest has its own uniqueness that makes it a worthy venture, and the interesting dark fantasy lore that the books provide gives us a fascinating world to be able to explore.

3. The Elder Scrolls: Online

The Elder Scrolls: Online is an MMORPG set in the familiar continent of Tamriel. Though most of you may remember it from the hugely popular Skyrim or even back in Oblivion or Morrowind days, none of those settings compare to the extensive areas you can explore in Online. There are main quests in every part of the continent and the ability to join a number of warring factions, aiding their attempt to overthrow one another.

Having an Elder Scrolls MMORPG is a nice change of pace, though it does stray away from some of the classic RPG elements. Even so, there's flexible class building and plenty of things to explore. With ten different races and six classes, you can mix and match any number of combinations to find your perfect fit and enjoy the lore-filled landscape of Tamriel, wandering places you've never dreamed of and discovering things you never thought were true.

2. Mass Effect: Andromeda

Considering Mass Effect has been being made alongside Dragon Age for years, there’s no way that the newest addition doesn’t belong on this list. Mass Effect Andromeda continues after the ending of Mass Effect 3. You awaken from cryosleep and your job is to forge a new path to intergalactic peace and discover some new alien races along the way. Like the previous games, it’s an action RPG, with armor and weapon upgrades and a wide-open world to explore.

The majority of Andromeda is based on discovery, traveling through these lore-filled worlds and acting as a diplomat to the alien races. You can craft with resources you find and forge relationships with your companions, including romancing them to your heart’s content. This game is great for any classic Bioware fan, full of charming writing and fast-paced gameplay.

And at number 1, we have the early access game that has the fans raving, Baldur’s Gate 3. A continuation of Baldur’s Gate 2, you find yourself on a mindflayer ship and, after a daring escape, search to find a solution to stop from becoming a mindflayer yourself. Baldur’s Gate 3 takes lore and gameplay from D&D fifth edition, using actual dice rolls for skill checks and letting you pick from a wide variety of classes to start. Though it’s not yet finished and is at a finished game’s price, updates for the game are free and the amount of detail already in it is astounding.

Baldur’s Gate 3 was made by the same people who made Divinity Original Sin 2, so if that’s a game on your list then this one is a must-have to pick up. With its turn-based combat and interesting, well-written characters, it’s clear that Larian Studios has continued to do what they’re best at, and it pays off. Companions and romance are also a thing, which is a personal favorite of mine, and the animations and character models for a game that’s not even finished yet is amazing. It’s clear a lot of love and work went into this game, and if you’re interested in watching it develop, I would highly suggest picking up a copy today.

The games coming out now immerse players by providing beautifully rendered environments, complete with changing weather, day and night cycles, and realistic ambient noises, that the player can really appreciate as they go through the game. When you factor in the revolutionary potential of virtual reality, the possibilities for making a player feel like they are “really there” seem to be almost limitless.

That said, most of my favorite games are still older titles, some dating back as far as the 80s and 90s. These games did not have the benefit of the high quality graphics and audio available today, but what these games lack in glamor, they more than make up for in their quality and depth.

#10) Dungeon Hack (PC)

True to its name, Dungeon Hack is unique because it doesn’t rely on a storyline to keep players engaged; in fact it has practically no plot at all. You’re an adventurer, hired by an unnamed sorceress, to retrieve a magical orb from a dungeon full of traps and monsters… that’s all there is to it. Instead of a deep story, the game leans on its random dungeon generator to provide players with a different experience each time they start a game, including a different style and layout for the dungeon, different traps and monsters, and a random boss at the end of each game. Brilliant in its simplicity, and with a clean user interface that’s easy to use, Dungeon Hack is a great option for a quick and satisfying game with little commitment.

#9) Pool of Radiance (PC)

The first computer game to be based on Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (AD&D) rules, Pool of Radiance is the foundation upon which many later RPGs were built. The player creates a party of up to six characters from various races and classes and starts the adventure in the city of New Phlan on the coast of the Moonsea in the D&D Forgotten Realms setting. The interface takes some getting used to, but once you get the hang of it, it is surprisingly easy to use and the game is more than worth the trouble.

The party comes across Ohlo in the slums of New Phlan and is offered a job. Sorry for kicking your door in, Ohlo, we thought this place was abandoned….

#8) Realms of Arkania: Blade of Destiny (PC)

Realms of Arkania actually shares a lot in common with games like Pool of Radiance, having similar gameplay and requiring the player to build a party of up to six characters from different races and classes. Realms of Arkania is based on a German pen and paper system called The Dark Eye, and offers some different choices for races, classes, and abilities. One of the most intriguing differences is the use of negative attributes in character creation, such as various phobias, greed, or a bad temper, that balance the positive attributes and have real effects on gameplay.

#7) The Magic Candle (PC)

There’s no way around it, playing The Magic Candle can be very frustrating. But the same things that make it so aggravating are also what make this game so rewarding. You are Lukas, a ranger who’s been chosen to lead an expedition to discover what’s happened to the guardians of the eponymous Magic Candle before it melts and releases a powerful demon back into the world. To succeed you’ll need to manage your time and resources, plan for anything, and keep your cool when things go terribly wrong. Buy a rope as soon as you can. You never know when you’ll be a half-continent away from the nearest city and need one… trust me.

Lukas’s party encounters a group of wolfinga in the wilderness. Though not particularly dangerous, they are obnoxiously hard to hit.

#6) Icewind Dale (PC / macOS)

Icewind Dale takes place in the harsh frozen lands in the northern part of Faerûn of the Forgotten Realms setting. Built with the Infinity Engine used to make Baldur’s Gate (see below), the game shares the same interface and game mechanics, but where the player builds a single character in BG and recruits companions as they go, in Icewind Dale the player designs the whole party from the start. The game features a gloomy, cold, stark feel that is perfect for the setting and a plot that gets really good, especially as the game progresses.

#5) Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura (PC)

In Arcanum, the player is thrown head-first into a world where magic and technology clash, each causing the other to fail, sometimes with catastrophic results. Are you a mage? You’re not allowed on the train, your magical attunement could cause the engine to explode. Are you a genius inventor? Don’t bother drinking that healing potion, it might as well be water. As the lone survivor of an airship crash, and begged by a dying passenger to deliver a message, you must rely on magic, or technology, or a happy balance of both to survive.

#4) Fallout: A Post Nuclear Role Playing Game (PC / macOS)

The original epic tale of the “Vault Dweller,” who ventures forth from Vault 13, alone and unafraid, into a radioactive hell-hole in search of the elusive “water-chip.” Its high points are its excellent turn-based combat system (one of the best), a massive post-apocalyptic wasteland to explore, and a simple but effective bartering system that allows you to trade with literally anyone who’s not trying to kill you. Word to the wise, don’t stand between your allies and the enemy… their aim’s not the best and they love to go full-auto.

#3) Baldur’s Gate (PC / macOS)

One of the most famous, highly-praised, and continuously played games ever made, Baldur's Gate’s reputation as a masterpiece is well-deserved. With an epic main storyline, numerous well-rounded companions to choose from, a badass main villain, tons of side-quests, and seemingly infinite replay value, Baldur’s Gate is worth hundreds of hours of gameplay.

#2) Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn & Throne of Bhaal (PC / macOS / Linux)

How do you improve on something as perfect as Baldur’s Gate? You keep all the great stuff that works, then you add more classes and subclasses, powerful new items and spells, new companions, a fresh new setting, titanic monsters that mere mortals have no business fighting, and a main bad guy that’s great at getting on your bad side.

One of the titanic monsters I mentioned in the description. This may actually be one of the weaker ones.

#1) Planescape: Torment (PC / macOS / Linux / iOS / Android / Switch / PS4 / Xbox One)

My very favorite, the story of the amnesiac “Nameless One” for whom dying is just a minor setback. Set in the D&D Planescape setting, the game features a fascinating setting, powerful competing factions, unique and interesting characters, and the best and most original plot of any game ever (in my not-so-humble opinion). The game is a little dialogue heavy, but it uses this to draw the player in and give them real influence over their companions and the game. Don’t worry about dying, it won’t slow you down much.

These games won’t be winning any awards for their looks (at least not anymore), but they still have a lot to offer if you’re looking for a great game with an epic story to tell. I encourage you to check these out, and to look past their outdated graphics and sometimes clunky interfaces; it's worth the trouble.

What Are The Best Games Like Baldur's Gate?

Since the beginning of time, geeks everywhere have been trying to mesh the nerdiness of tabletop roleplaying with the nerdiness of computer gaming to create an unholy creature with a power such that no mortal should ever wield. Back rooms in comic-shops went silent in despair as the one known as Baldur’s Gate emerged from a virgin (obviously) womb. DM’s everywhere shed silent tears, knowing their day of reckoning was at hand.

Now, I love me some D&D. 5e is my wheelhouse. I’ve gotten into fistfights with full-grown men over refusing not to call Pathfinder “3.5”. I cut my teeth on the rogue-like games, back to Gauntlet on the NES. Baldur’s Gate wet my whistle on many occasions, mostly during my “GameCube” phase. The series, set in the world of Dungeons and Dragons, plays off of the rules of AD&D’s 2nd Edition. Now, it’s all basic and stuff, compared to the wacky shit that 5e is “Unearthing”, but GOD it’s good to pop that in, blow off the old memory cartridge and grind.

So, you ask me, “Damn son, that sounds great. But, y’know, my GameCube is currently in a garbage dump, as it has been for about ten years…” Well no problem. Here’s twenty-five other games that continue the legacy of Baldur’s Gate without my stupid GameCube.

25. Tower of Time

So new it barely ranks on my top 25.

You play as a narrator of sorts, stuck in the tower of time yet able to see through the eyes of a few select adventurers.

You control these class-segregated characters in a post-apocalyptic world of high-fantasy science fiction in an attempt to learn the secrets of this dastardly underground tower.

Strategically place your crew of four according to their strengths. Send your tanks and fighters forward to take the damage and construct walls to hinder enemies.

Keep your ranged fighters within line of sight and out of harm’s way. The enemies you come across have their own methods as well, so be sure to pump up your characters with appropriately upgrading their gear. But, be wary of image-based cutscenes and tons of reading!

Still, worth a glance if it’s your turn to buy the pizza and you can muster up a decent excuse to skip D&D night...

24. The Age of Decadence

Age of Decadence embraces the nonlinear story that all DM’s try so hard to emulate. You explore a world torn apart and enfeebled by a long ago war. Civilization, knowledge and order are a fleeting memory. Live with the choices you make from plethora of options you’re given.

Though character customization is bleak, you adapt your Character using skill points. Combat is highly tactical, you aim for particular body parts, use an axe to break a sword, a hammer to knock an opponent prone or a dagger to ignore armor attributes. Your actions in and out of combat are paramount - the consequences of your choices effect the storyline drastically. Let no one accuse this DM of railroading ever again!

23. Pillars of Eternity

Easy to dig into without much thought. Save that for game night. Suddenly, you see people’s souls. Right? But what’s more disconcerting is that you notice more and more people without souls. Dig into the world of Pillars of Eternity and uncover a plot as powerful as the gods.

You can sink your teeth into the exploration and combat, reminiscent of those Diablo classics, yet reduxed for present-day consumption with much more depth and nonlinear play. Combat is launching spells and hack-n-slashing alongside the rest or your party. The creatures you battle, are beautiful, on par with Matthew Mercer quality miniatures. While not the headiest or most original, you can definitely get your isometric cRPG rocks off without a problem.

As soon as you’re done eye-fucking the dragon, let’s go ahead and kill it.

22. Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire

Embark once again as a Watcher, able to see souls. Taking place a few years after the first installment, the world and the gods are still reeling from the outcome of your first escapade. Continue your quest deeper into the world’s greatest lie to uncover the truth, and perhaps save your own soul.

Upon your first stroll into Pillars of Eternity 2, you’ll see that what may have bothered you about the first installment has been fixed. Graphics, open-world, character customization, actions/consequences – all of these have been honed to make this a good place as any for you to hide from the real world… Obsidian should open their doors for more Kickstarter games. You’ll be gripped by combat, casting visually spectacular spells and pulling off slick melee attacks against a wide array of creatures.

Neon. Sparkly. Glowing. Sharing all of the descriptors of a Lisa Frank poster, yet somehow incredibly badass.

21. Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition

Assume the role of The Nameless One, as you explore this world much akin to a Tim Burton wet dream. You wake as a corpse in a mortuary, your mind a blank slate. (How original, I know.) Follow the clues and recover who you are… and what you have done.

If you feel the need to stay in the Dungeons and Dragons universe but tire of Baldur and his ol’ gate, Torment will let you do just that. You’ll find comfort in how it plays like BG, but holds more in conversation and clues than mindless combat. You can progress for hours without getting into a scrap. The story sucks you into its dark gothic world, and you will get lost there. What you do and how you react are the basis for story progression, along with some pretty existential questions flung your way. They took the original and just shined it up, and when you have such an interesting story, that’s all you really need.

Not much to look at, but neither is “Times New Roman”, and Game of Thrones is printed in that.

20. Torment: Tides of Numenera

Immerse yourself in the dark mythos of Torment just one more time. As another incarnate of Planescape’s character, you now are the final vessel of The Nameless One matching wits against The Sorrow, the main antagonist. Expect more macabre settings and post-apocalyptic fun in a future gone terribly terribly wrong.

Visually superior to its predecessor, Numenera delivers what Planescapes couldn’t. You traverse this familiar world aided by a motley crew of party members with motives of their own. The story is still the selling point here, yet a revamped combat system lets you satiate that urge to plow your undead body into any creature that stands in your way. If you came out of Planescapes wishing there was more, well, here you go. More.

No, I’m sure it’s a normal-sized creature that lives here. He just loves him a big door.

19. Pathfinder: Kingmaker

“3.5: Kingmaker” just doesn’t have the same ring to it. Following in the footsteps of the cooler stepbrother to Dungeons and Dragons, you follow the Pathfinder mythos in its own isometric adventure. Your basics are here, interesting quests and story hooks, but what sets it apart is the realm builder aspect first touched on in the tabletop versions “Kingmaker” module. You’re gifted a broader scope as you can grow and expand your own kingdom from the wilderness of the Stolen Lands.

Whether you prefer the Pathfinding to the Dungeons and Dragoning, I begrudgingly suppose you still deserve a cRPG to call your own. Churned from the alchemist pot that is Kickstarter, this upcoming release is in my Steam cart, and damned well should be in yours. Battles compound the fun of range-based magic attacks with balls-to-the-wall weapons attacks. If I can pick up a copy of the Pathfinder SRD (Yeah, a free download.), then this RPG/Conquer game is definitely worth the impatient wait.

18. Dragon Age: Origins

Origins starts you in the game before the game starts. Wow, so forward thinking. You begin by running through the backstory, or prelude, of your character. What you do molds your character and the story itself. You become part of an elite order, known as a Grey Warden, tasked with saving the world from the Archdemon.

The main story itself is deeply story-driven, and that story depends entirely on your choices and alliances. You blast spells, capable of making combos, or plow through your enemies hack-n-slashy. Meanwhile, sadly, the AI tends to get easily confused and just shy of useless.

No, it’s fine. You guys go ahead. I’ll wait here just a tic.

17. Exanima

Dungeon crawler to the core, by definition. Not for the faint of heart, Examina is the Wizards of the Coast official campaigns equivalent of the cRPG world, and everything else is so much homebrew. You’re used to your Dungeon Master flying loose and bending the rule, but compared to this, your last D&D session was more like a free-to-the-public improv session. Every nuance of your controls in combat is incorporated, making the battles more realistic and more deadly.

There is no room for passive gaming or button mashing. You will need to master the controls if you hope to survive this physics-based combat system. Aim your attacks. Use your surroundings. Tactical fighting MUST be in your wheelhouse. You’ll come out of it a veritable thumb ninja. The world though… You traverse the world in much the same way, everything is just as immersive and interactive.

Next, arc the mace at a 45 ̊angle making sure that impact is 20 mph and at 1.75” below the jawline.

16. Eitr

You battle as the Shield Maiden, travelling through the nine worlds of Norse Mythology trying to right the wrongs of Loki. (Real Norse, like “Vikings” Norse. Not pretend Chris “Dick Abs” Helmsworth Norse.) Something has tainted the kingdoms of Yggdrasil, and it is up to you to clear the air and unravel the mystery.

Stylized, colorful and retro classic arcade. Your sword swipes and attacks are deliciously Capcom-esque. A foggy glowing ambiance adds to the ethereal qualities to the game, spooking you like Castlevania did on the Super Nintendo. Almost every enemy towers over you, yet you’re an even matching. Your powers grow with receiving “Favors” like powerful perks and leveling up.

How about some research, Stan Lee?! I’m sure the entire Norse community would breathe easier.

15. Magicka

You’re a wizard Harry. Just the main character’s abilities and magic system in this RPG make it its own uniquely worthy beast. You have full control of the eight magical elements, how to combine them, how to cast them, and what to cast them on. You (and up to three of your buddies) play as a wizard sent out to defeat and evil sorcerer hell-bent on filling your world with mid-level bad guys.

You literally have a spellbook sandbox. Your party’s Level 15 Wild Magic Sorcerer doesn’t have a damned thing on this guy. You can follow the light humorous and sadly linear) story, reminiscent of The Bard’s Tale, or you can just as happily find a corner in the woods and play with yourself. Combining and creation of spell after spell is the real sweet spot of Magicka.

Vlad wouldn’t mind terribly if you’d, y’know, gather all that blood up for him… Not that he’s a vampire or anything.

14. Magicka 2

Oh my god, remember how I was gushing about Magicka 1? Well make sure you’re not sitting on anything that stains easily, because they managed to make it better. No, not better. Awesomer. Co-op with the dudes that played with you last time, and dive back in to seek out and save a prophesized child from the classic bad guys of yore.

The open-world spellbook is back, and somehow so much more immersive. Do what you like with your magics (magicKs?), from blasting a squad of goons to hell with the magical equivalent of a hydrogen bomb to casting a weak fire spell on yourself to dry yourself off. Awesomer. Yeah.

Sure, all hell’s breaking loose. But them water graphics, tho’.

13. Book of Demons

I hope you dig these graphics as much as I do. Cute and 3D and simple: delve into the dungeons below the Old Cathedral to save the world from the Archdemon and his five subject notebook full of minions!

This is the Paper Mario that you write home about. (Unless you wrote home about Paper Mario, then, shame on you.) You swing your blade haphazardly, mowing down endless torrents of origami minions, an action-RPG through and through, peppered with a deck building system oddly akin to Pathfinder Adventures: Rise of the Runelords. Not a heady thing, but super fun. Play it in tandem with Exanima to keep from getting burnt out on either.

12. Wasteland 2: Director's Cut

Switch gears with me, kiddo, and let’s get a little post-apocalyptic. Say we’re in a future where Trump wasn’t fuck-buddies with the ol’ USSR, and we went totally nuclear. Fast-forward a hundred years and a Wasteland 1… The world’s all gone to shit, and you’re mission is survival of you and your community in the deserts of south western United States.

Call it Savage Worlds to our precious Dungeons & Dragons. The director’s cut upgraded the audio and visuals and modded some of the gameplay making this more fun than not watching that one My Chemical Romance video. Controls are on point, though gameplay doesn’t do as much you could hope to get the heart pounding. Combat is clean, yet turn-based. More classic Mad Max, less Fury Road, sadly.

11. Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition

Up next on the list of games like Baldur’s Gate? Oh shit, it IS Baldur’s Gate! Revamped from the 1998 version and polished as best as possible. Come on back to the Sword Coast, oh child of Bhaal, discover the secret of the iron shortage and uncover the plots of Sarevok. Best him and his horde in order to keep Baldur’s Gate from disintegrating into civil war.

It’s the same game, great for 1998 and definitely worth a romp for namesake alone, but certainly outdistanced by current technology. You can’t beat a classic, just try not to pretend that you can make something from 1998 look good at that resolution. (And, just for clarification, I love this game… I just don’t have any alliterations.)

Enfeeble that Drow Warrior. Yes. Enfeeble means immolate.

10. Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition: Siege of Dragonspear

See #11. This is a direct continuation of Baldur’s Gate, to the point that you can import your character from the first and just rock on from there. Taking place before the event in Baldur’s Gate 2, as a crusade erupts in the area north of the titular city. It’s up to you to go to Dragonspear Castle and beat some sense into yet another threat to your beloved Sword Coast.

Though still outdated by twenty years, this one holds its own and is worth the time if you’re feeling nostalgic… If you own the previous Baldur’s Gate, this one should be hooked to its trailer hitch and next in line to play.

Baldur’s Gate: Season 2. Will Ross and Rachel get back together, or will the fanatics tear the city apart?

9. Lost Ark

Another beauty akin to Project TL. The Diablo franchise comes to mind, but is then blown out of the water as you begin your quest to save the world from one of those demon legions these RPGs are so fond of. Cruise the world in your own ship, discovering islands in search for the Ark. Which is apparently, well, lost.

You have a wide range of classes (from the classics to new imaginative “homebrews”) for your character to choose from. Further customization is available as you progress, molding your character into its own original snowflake or whatever.

Baby it’s better, down where it’s wetter. Take it from me.

8. Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition

A short stint as a caravan guard ensnares your party into uncovering a devious plot against the denizens of Icewind Dale. This fellow Poquelin is really vying for the seat as the “Big Bad” in this campaign, and he wants this snowy landscape all for his own dire deeds. Think Baldur’s Gate wearing a nice winter coat.

A little more linear than its Baldur’s Gate predecessor, Icewind Dale holds higher standards in the graphics and gameplay, yet lacks a little in the story department. Oh, and it’s set in a frozen tundra environment… You could probably stick with Skyrim, if you’re shopping in that department. The graphics are just a tit better.

Guys. Check it out. I just killed this dragon. For reals.

7. Icewind Dale 2

Set thirty years after the shenanigans that Poquelin brought to Icewind Dale, this installment is set further north centering around an uprising of goblinoid factions threatening the Ten Towns of Icewind Dale. Travel through exotic locations, jungles, volcanic caverns and even the underdark. Don’t forget to stomp the snow off your boots before you come in!

Listen: The Icewind Dales and Baldur’s Gates and Torments are all just different campaigns from different Dungeon Masters. They all hold roughly the same controls, user-interface and graphics. Plus, y’know, D&D background. But if you only play one, then Icewind Dale 2 should really be it. Others may boast better in each of those categories, but none are as comfortable as these. Like that pair of sweatpants even your girlfriend doesn’t know about.

6. The Bard's Tale

Voiced by the Dread Pirate Roberts, you slouch through a rich profanity-infused fantasy world, just trying to get by. It seems everything is out to get you, none-so-much as that damned smarmy narrator. Cary Elwes begrudgingly agrees to help rescue an imprisoned princess, who might just be a wicked demon hell-bent on overrunning the world. Either way, the Bard isn’t too concerned, as both outcomes seem to be to his liking.

Summon a plethora of beasties with a magic-infused tune thanks to your bard skills and hack your way through enemies, i.e. those you’ve pissed off with your smarmy attitude. You’ll have a little trouble with the navigating and the UI, but you’ll be too busy snorting with laughter and looking over your shoulder (hoping no one heard the off-color remark that some non-player character just blurted out) to care. It’s as if Mel Brooks was your Dungeon Master, and had no idea what the hell the Bard Class did.

No rodents of unusual size? No Fred Savage intro/outro? No Billy Crystal cameo? …As you wish!

5. Project TL

I don’t care if this didn’t come out yet. Watch the trailer, and when your nerd-boner finally subsides, let me know. A direct sequel to the first Lineage game, not much else is known about this upcoming title, even if I was fluent in Korean. The Lineage story arc is high fantasy centering around a prince attempting to rightfully reclaim his throne, but aside from that, not much else is known of this title.

Now, you know they hype up the gameplay in a trailer, but this looks more like an action game than an RPG. Do you yearn to plow through hordes of orcs with your magic-arc slashing sword, while what I can only assume is “warp-striking” to blip closer to your enemies? Yeah. Me too. This has the makings of a solid cRPG, except with a good Cujo-dose of rabies. Gameplay looks grand, and the storyline from the Lineage saga is worth picking this one up.

Wish Trump would make them finally translate it into Amurican.

4. Neverwinter (2013 mmorpg)

Neverwinter (2013 mmorpg) gameplay

Dungeons & Dragons… Yet an MMO. Like you arrive at a really big Thanksgiving table and everyone has their own dice set and doesn’t have to share. (Yes, I have seven d4’s, and no, you may not. I’m saving them for my level 4 magic missile, you mooch.) The city of Neverwinter falls into disarray and rival factions when their king goes missing. Sweeping story arcs and bad-ass bosses keep this MMO decent. There’s the Lich Queen Valindra, evil incarnate and easy on the eyes, who revels in the madness, stirring chaos into the once peaceful land of Neverwinter. Lich, please.

You can treat this like your favorite kid amongst the other D&D-based games. Don’t let them know, but they tooootally deserve preferential treatment.

3. Tyranny

You know how sometimes shit happens, the bad guys win and the good guys get, like, cancer or something? This game plonks you down in the middle of a world conquered by an evil army as a mid-ranking officer, just trying to get by. You can follow your orders or your heart, secretly help the rebels, sew dissention, or just be a bad guy through and through.

You and your party are sent out to put out the last few fires of rebellion, but it is up to you how (and if) you do it. Choices and consequences are heavy in the terrible world, and if you get into it, beware that it will drain you emotionally. Like “Life is Beautiful.”

All I ever wanted was to be able to play the bad guy. But now… God, what have I done?

2. Divinity Original Sin

Not to be confused with Divine Divinity… This is a prequel, and a bajillion times better. Divinity Original Sin makes open-world games a joke. You can interact with everything. EVERYTHING. You take on the mantle of a “Source Hunter”, searching out and taking down those that practice a dangerous new type of magic. There’s onion type layers to this plot, and it is perfectly balanced out by a sweet combat system.

Talk out your decisions with your party, or just some shmuck walking by. Become a Source Hunter, sniffing out and shutting down that dank magic shit. The freedom of interactivity will get you lost in the world, and the blatant fun of the combat system and intrigue of the plot will make you scoff the next time your Dungeon Master asks you to “imagine, if you will…”

Curb your fire spells in dry weather. Remember what Smokey the owlbear says, “Only you can prevent forest fires.”

1. Divinity Original Sin 2

And you thought the first one was good. Dummy. Set one thousand years after the events of the original Divinity Original Sin, delve into the highly complex and interactive world just one more time. You play as a “Sourcerer” the opposite end of the stick as last time. Hunted by the Divine Order, you make your way through the trials to become the next Divine.

Build your party from scratch with diverse character customization options, and if you happen upon anyone else in your Dungeons & Dragons campaign with the night off, fire up the multiplayer, either online or local. Original Sin 2 is easily the best out there this side of sitting around a table with your ugly friends drinking Miller’s and rolling polyhedrals.

Oh, wait, the computer does that for you. So go ahead, call your Dungeon Master and tell him that you’re not going to make it. I don’t give a shit if he has something totally bananas planned for the party. He either reschedules or figures out a way to write your PC out of it. Set up your comfy chair, not that hardback dining room chair or god-forbid the folding one if you arrive last. Put on your nasty sweatpants, turn off your cell phone, and power up that overclocked calculator you call a computer.

You’ve got a date with destiny tonight my friend. Tonight, you game… ALONE!

3 Reasons Why The Coming of Baldur’s Gate 3 is Inevitable

The Baldur’s Gate series is legendary

There is only a small cadre of games that get to be called “legendary”, and Baldur’s Gate is among them. It has been called one of the best RPG’s of all time, and a sequel is virtually guaranteed.

When the first game came out in 1998, it blew audiences away. It got unanimous near-perfect reviews, and it won the Origins Award for Best Roleplaying Computer Game of the year. It started the Baldur’s Gate series and created the standard for future similar releases, such as Planescape: Torment (1999), and Icewind Dale (2000). The sequel, Shadows of Amn (2000) further expanded upon this success scoring the sixth-highest score on Metacritic to this day.

You know, if you grew up with games like this you really end up missing some of the dialogue options

Fans want it

If there was any doubt that there was a strong demand for the return of Baldur’s Gate, it evaporated with the strong commercial success of the Enhanced editions of both 1 and 2, both scoring very nearly the same scores they managed over a decade ago. Between that, and the release of the greatly successful spiritual successor to Planescape: Torment: Tides of Numenera in February, and the release of Diablo 3 back in 2012, the time is just right for this gaming juggernaut to forge its way into the modern era of gaming.

Also, some of those environments in modern Blu-ray quality are going to be amazing.

It will make tons of money for the developer

It’s been estimated that Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2 sold collectively about 4 million units. Add in about another million units for the DLC of both, at a retail price of … let’s say $50, then you are looking at about $250 million in sales if my math is correct. Adding on to that all the spin off titles like those for the PS2, and of course the Enhanced Editions … you are looking at a whole lot of money. Plus gaming is a much larger industry now than it was when Baldur’s Gate was released, and games have nearly doubled in price in some cases. With so much more to play with, I doubt the developer would have trouble perhaps even doubling those sales with just the single title on its own. Just look at Diablo 3 which sold 3.5 million units just within 24 hours of release. To date it’s sold an estimated 30 million copies across all platforms … and that’s from the same era with many of the same fans.

I just hope we get a better camera, that’s all I’m asking for …

A sequel to Baldur’s Gate is a mathematical certainty, the only question is when. Beamdog, the company that did the Enhanced versions of the first and second game have already been quoted as saying that Baldur’s Gate 3 is a long-term goal for them. So now we wait, and in the meantime play similar releases like Torment: Tides of Numenera to get a taste of what a modern-day Baldur’s Gate might look like.
