Looking for great cartoons just like Avatar The Last Airbender while waiting for Avatar Studios to give us more content?

Probably one of the greatest cartoons of its time. Avatar: The Last Airbender has sure set the standards for a lot of kid shows since it started airing. Not only did this show appeal to kids, it was smart and sophisticated enough for adults to enjoy. In fact, with the show now available on Netflix a lot of new fans of the series have started emerging. What’s more, with the creation of Avatar Studios we’ll have more content coming our way.

So, what’s next? You just finished Avatar the Last Airender and now wondering what’s your next big adventure? Despite the announcement of a new Avatar series and a movie, we still have a long way to go before we can watch that. While waiting for the next Avatar show, here’s a list of some shows that might take you on your next best ride.

10. Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic

A boy named Aladdin, who is a legendary Magi, is brought to a new world by his friend Ugo. Although Ugo can only materialize in the new world for short periods of time. Aladdin then meets Alibaba Saluja who dreams of claiming the treasures of Amon in a nearby dungeon. The two eventually become friends and conquer the dungeon making Alibaba a king candidate and Aladdin his guiding Magi. Magis exist in this world to bring upon king candidates to decide who is worthy of being the king of the entire world.

Suddenly brought to unknown lands to go on a new adventure to save the world is something both Aladdin and Aang share in common. For Aang, he was trapped in an iceberg, Aladdin on the other hand was trapped in a small pocket dimension of a room and has yet to experience life outside of it. They both grow attached to the first people they meet and eventually drag them to their own personal missions. While not a flying bison, Aladdin’s Turban is proven to be just as fun of a ride as Appa is.

9. She- Ra and the Princesses of Power

In the planet Etheria, we follow the stories of two orphans, Adora and Catra who are raised to eventually become soldiers for the evil army led by Hordak called the Horde. Adora, while lost in the woods, finds a magical sword that transforms her into the legendary Princess of Power, She-Ra. With her new found power and knowledge, Adora joins the Rebellion in order to fight the Horde and builds the Princess Alliance (a group of magical girls). However, her new found role is pitting her against her former best friend, Catra who eventually becomes Adora’s mortal enemy.

Much of Avatar: The Last Airbender is centered among the Gaang. If you’re looking for the power of friendship that the Gaang brought along during their adventures then the Princess Alliance can just be the next best wholesome group as the Gaang. Also, there’s the whole concept of passing of powers from one generation to another. Aang is a reincarnation of all the avatars that lived before him, meanwhile, Adora is the first She-Ra in the past thousand years by finding the sword and is able to communicate with the previous owner.

8. Steven Universe

Beach City is protected by a group of humanoid alien warriors called the Crystal Gems. The members are composed of Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl, and under their care is a young half human-gem boy named Steven. Steven got his power from his mother, the former leader of the Crystal Gems, Rose Quartz. While still unable to fully understand and use his power, Steven spends his days among his human companions and struggles to prove himself as a member of the Crystal Gems.

While not as linear as Avatar: The Last Airbender, Steven Universe does show a lot of character development, not only through Steven’s journey on proving himself as a member of the Crystal Gem but growth is also shown through the other cast members. Same can be said with A:TLA; we see the members learn more about their bending and about teamwork as the show progresses.

7. W.I.T.C.H.

W.I.T.C.H. is a French-American animated television series based on an Italian comic book of the same name. In the show we follow five girls: Will Vandom, Irma Lair, Taranee Cook, Cornelia Hale and Hay Lin who gain magical powers corresponding to the 4 natural elements and the 5th element: Quintessence. By gaining these powers they are now the new Guardian of the Veil. As Guardians they are sworn to protect the universe by Kandrakar. For the television series one of the first major tasks the Guardians will have to face is saving a mythical world called Meridian from the evil Prince Phobos.

One thing we loved about Avatar is “Bending” which is the ability to manipulate a specific element. The four elements we see are the classical elements of water, earth, fire and air. We see the existence of these four elements once again in W.I.T.C.H. . While not exactly “bending”, their magic is still a manipulation of these 4 elements (plus one extra mythical element). In the series we see the girls also struggle to understand their own powers and abilities, and learn their duties as the Guardians of the Veil, just as much as Aang is learning about his duties to the World as its Avatar.

6. Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts

In the future the world is overrun by mutated-animals known as mutes. Now, humans are forced to live in underground cities called burrows. Kipo Oak is unfortunately separated from her father and the rest of her community when a mega monkey attacks her area. Now traveling to find her family she befriends other humans and mutants who decide to help her find her way home. Her journey to find her family opens a whole new world for Kipo as she discovers more about herself and the world that forced her to live under the oppression of the other mutes.

The main goal in Avatar: The Last Airbender was to stop the fire nation from completely taking over the world. The goal was never to completely obliterate the fire nation but to restore balance between the four nations. Kipo who was just supposed to find her father ended up making other humans and mutes her friends despite being of different species and beliefs, this eventually leads to the creation of the Human Mute Ultimate Friendship Alliance” where humans and mutes alike work together to sustain friendship among each other.

5. Avatar: The Legend of Korra

The direct sequel of Avatar: The Last Airbender. With the four nations finally at peace, a war between the nations seems highly unlikely. There is now a new Avatar looking over the balance of the world: Avatar Korra, the successor of Avatar Aang. Korra is kept sheltered in the south pole and has several mentors helping her master the 3 elements. When it was finally time for her to learn Air bending, her mentor was suddenly called away to Republic City to help resolve political problems. Wanting to master all four elements as soon as possible, Korra sneaks herself away to Republic City. Now she is to face her duty as the New Avatar as the modern world faces several political and spiritual problems.

If you have just ended A:TLA, then this is probably the next series you should watch right away. While still being comedic on its own, The Legend of Korra has older characters and therefore the overall tone of the show seems to be built for a more mature target audience as compared to its predecessor. Nonetheless, if you still miss the Gaang, then fans will be pleased to know that Katara, Toph and Zuko are still around and will make appearances from time to time.

4. Voltron: Legendary Defender

For several years the Galra Empire has plagued the universe by destroying several civilizations and enslaving races. The last hope of the universe is a mecha called the Defender of the Universe: Voltron, which is composed of five lion robots who are piloted by Paladins. 5 teenagers: Keith, Lance, Pidge, Hunk and Shiro are transported right in the middle of this intergalactic war. They become the 5 paladins to the needed 5 robots to form Voltron. Now they are tasked to protect the universe from the Galra Empire’s grasp.

A mecha show is probably something far out from something like Avatar, which gets its roots from ancient civilization, customs and several other historic references and teachings. But Voltron is a lot like Avatar in themes...only in space, with giant robots. Both shows are created by the same team that brought us both Avatar series so they are bound to be similarities. I found the show’s sense of humor going about in the same direction. plus, a lot of characters share uncanny personalities. Also, saving the galaxy is a lot similar to bringing balance back to the world, just on a bigger scale.

3. Full Metal Alchemist

One day, two brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric attempt to revive their dead mother with the use of Alchemy. The experiment backfires causing Ed to lose his left leg while Al loses his entire body. Ed attempts to bind Al’s soul in a suit of armor by paying his right arm. The incident caused the two to never play with human life or souls again as there is no “equivalent exchange” for a soul. However, the brothers do try to find a solution to retrieve Al’s proper body so he can live as an ordinary human. In order to bypass the law of equivalent exchange to get Al’s body, the brothers must find or create a philosopher’s stone. This leads them to become State Alchemist so that they can continue their research on the stone.

You can choose to watch the original Full Metal Alchemist 2003 animation or FMA: Brotherhood, both are masterpieces. FMA, similar to Avatar: The Last Airbender has built an incredible fictional world and a great compelling story to match. The cast also has a wide range of character archetypes and of course the fight scenes are top tier despite being short. If you also love how A:TLA offsets their seriousness with comedy, FMA has a lot of those funny moments, even mid battle.

2. Moana

At a young age the ocean chooses Moana, the Motunui Chief Tui’s daughter, to return the heart of Te Fiti. Before Moana could reach for the heart, Tui carried Moana back to shore and kept her away from the ocean to prepare her to become the next chief. Years later, a blight strikes the island causing vegetations to slowly wither away and the fish to avoid the waters surrounding the island. Moana suggested venturing further out into the ocean to figure out what is causing it. Frustrated Moana tries to sail further from their fishing grounds but is unable to conquer the waves. The incident discourages her but her grandmother advises her by showing a secret cave where she finds a stronger boat that can handle the waves.

So, Moana and Aang ended up with the worst possible job on the earth by being the “chosen one”. We often see these two, though determined to see through their role, occasionally falter with their own doubts and frustrations. For Moana, we see this at the beginning and also before her “I am Moana'' number. For Aang we see this a bunch of times per book but most notably before the start of the invasion during the eclipse and the start of the final season where he feels he failed his mission to the world.

1. Dragon Prince

In Xadia, magic comes from the sun, the moon, the stars, the earth and the ocean. However, human mages began tampering with magic and created the 7th magic type called Dark Magic, the problem is they need to capture magical creatures in order to make great amounts of this magic. This causes tension between Xadia and the Human Kingdom. With the Moonshadow elves hungry for revenge they sent the 15-year-old Rayla to assassinate the two human princes: Callum and Ezran. After figuring out the egg is not destroyed, she abandons her mission to side with the boys in an attempt to end the war and restore peace to two kingdoms.

Remember the time Sokka told Yue he was a prince? Well maybe in another world he was. The first thing fans will probably notice is that Callum sounds a lot like Sokka, even their humor is a bit similar. Don’t worry aside from humor and sharing the same voice actors, Dragon Prince pretty much has the same problem and goal as Avatar does. There is this big problem when it comes to divisions of the world; We see humans not getting along with the magical creatures, meanwhile in Avatar, we see the whole 4 nations divided due to their different standpoints and cultures. The goal? Make amends with everyone and restore balance.

[Top 10] Best Comic Books For Kids

Because comic books are fantastic, but not always super appropriate. Comics like Watchmen, Y the Last Man, and The Walking Dead are iconic, but I wouldn’t give any of those books to anyone under the age of 14 or 15.

With that being said, there are a ton of brilliant comics that are made with kids in mind. If you’re considering getting your kid into a series of comics, might I suggest:

10. Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur

What a sweet dino, not eating that kid.

Lunella Lafayette is a super-genius who’s trapped in a standard school that can’t seem to keep up with her. To make matters worse, she also has Inhuman genes that she knows will radically change her in the near future if she doesn’t do something to stop them. It’s in this pursuit for a cure that she accidentally calls up a ferocious dinosaur from the past and drops it into modern-day New York City.

Fortunately, though, she seems to be able to communicate with the dinosaur and builds something of a relationship with it. In a world where Lunella doesn’t fit in, a devil dinosaur may be the best, and only, friend she has.

You should read this series if you:

Are looking for a story with newer characters
Want a comic with an unlikely partnership
Enjoy stories with fantastical elements
Would like to see a T-Rex act like a lost dog

9. Bone

Nothing weird behind you, Fone. Just keep going!

Bone is a comic series that feels like an up-to-date Sunday newspaper comic strip in both its art and writing.

The three Bone cousins, Fone, Phoney, and Smiley, are chased out of their hometown of Boneville after Phoney loses the election for mayor (due to some very shady business deals). After traveling across the desert, the cousins are separated, and the comic begins to primarily follow Fone.

Eventually, Fone finds a lush valley in the desert, filled with a variety of strange creatures. His cousins end up in the valley as well, and the three of them work to survive in their new environment. It’s an enjoyable story with humor for readers of all ages to enjoy.

You should pick this up if you:

Are looking for a story that focuses heavily on humor
Prefer a cartoony art style
Like seeing regular-ish people in fantastical settings
Want to know why Netflix decided to make a series about this

8. Batman: Li’l Gotham

Aw, aren't all of those super-criminals cute when they're drawn that way. Sure, have my wallet, little Penguin!

Damian Wayne takes things very seriously. Like, all the time. Being raised by the League of Assassins and then having Batman as a dad can do that to a kid.

You know it’s gotten bad when your childhood idea of a good time was fighting zombies that your grandfather created by throwing bodies into the Lazarus Pit.

But the Bat-family, even Batman himself, realizes that Damian needs to learn to enjoy some things in life. So, they come together as a family in this comic book series to show Damian various holidays in Gotham and how much joy those days can bring. Damian not only learns about how much these holidays mean to the general public and the citizens that he helps to protect but also how much his own family can enjoy them.

Pick this comic up if you:

Enjoy non-traditional art styles
Want stories that explore a variety of holidays
Are looking for an enjoyable family-based story
Think Damian Wayne should lighten up a little

7. Superman for all Seasons

With a jawline like that, he must be a hero!

Most people are pretty familiar with Superman, but this comic approaches the man of steel from another angle. It’s very much a look at the start of Superman’s career as a crimefighter, starting with the Kents revealing that they found him as a child and Clark learning more about his powers before heading off to Metropolis. Once there, he meets Louis Lane, gets a job at the daily planet, saves people, and does all of the expected Superman stuff.

What’s interesting about this comic is the way the story is told, as it swaps between the point of view of several in-story characters that aren’t Superman. It starts with Jonathan Kent in the Spring, Louis Lane in the Summer, Lex Luther in the Fall, and the Lana Lang in the Winter. Each one brings their own perspective on the character, and the different ideas about him from each narrator are well-written.

Ultimately, it’s a coming-of-age story for Clark Kent as he becomes the hero that the DC universe knows and loves. It’s enjoyable, it’s different, and it can really be appreciated by both kids and adults.

You should pick up this comic if you:

Are looking for a story about an inexperienced Superman
Want a mostly innocent story with some real depth
Would like a story written from a few different points of view
Want a smaller-scope Superman story where he doesn’t lift the Earth or something

6. Ms. Marvel

Don't think for a second that she would punch you with a hand that small. It's gotta get big first.

Kamala Khan is a Pakistani-American girl from New Jersey who loves the Avengers, particularly Captain Marvel. In Kamala’s eyes, Captain Marvel can save everyone with a smile and look very good while doing it.

One night, after uncharacteristically sneaking out to go to a party, Kamala is engulfed in a strange mist, which gives the power to shapeshift! She can grow or shrink her body parts, and she can look like other people. However, she quickly learns that having super-powers isn’t all fun and games, and it’s not as easy as the heroes make it look.

As she figures out what to do and who she wants to be, she reflects on her own powers and ideals, falling back on one of her father’s favorite quotes, “whoever saves one person, it is as if he has saved all of mankind”. With that, Kamala decides to put on a costume and save people as the new Ms. Marvel!

Pick up this comic book series if you:

Are looking for something a bit more mature for a kid’s comic
Would like a comic that explores more about Islamic-American culture
Want a story about the importance of accepting who you are instead of wishing you were someone else
Need a superhero origin where someone has actually thought of becoming a superhero beforehand

5. Adventure Time

The art alone is just wildly kid-friendly. Awesome to the max, but kid-friendly.

What time is it? Adventure Time!

A comic book spin-off of the popular show of the same name, the Adventure Time comics follow Jake the Dog and Finn the Human through many of their crazy adventures. Some adventures can be solved with a sword or item of power, while others require less traditional means, such as knowledge or compassion. Or sick battle-burns.

The stories aren’t always too deep, but they’re consistently enjoyable. The action is compelling and well-drawn, and the characters feel accurate to their television counterparts. Each comic contains its main story, but will also often include a small, unconnected side story.

You should pick some of these comics up if you:

Were a fan of the show
Are hunting for a pretty silly comic
Want a comic with a fair amount of action, but not a ton of actual violence
Like art where a dog stretches into weird shapes

4. Amulet

I know the imagery seems creepy, but in my defense, it is a Scholastic book. They make their own rules.

After their father dies in a car accident, Emily and Navin are brought to an old family home by their now-widowed mother, Karen, to clean the place up. While cleaning and exploring, Emily finds an ancient amulet that used to belong to her grandfather and, like any kid, tries it on.

At first, nothing seems amiss. Later that night, however, Karen is kidnapped by an arachnid monster, and Emily is introduced to a world full of creatures and monsters. It’s in this world learns that, if she accepts the power of the amulet, she can become a Stonekeeper.

Together with Navin, Emily must use her newfound powers to rescue her mother and survive this world, making both friends and enemies along the way.

It’s a good and compelling story for all ages. I’ve also only seen it in graphic novel form, so you wouldn’t be able to buy a single issue of the comic, but it’s very much worth the investment. While it doesn’t reinvent the wheel for the fantasy genre, it does use the ideas and setting very well.

You should read this series if you:

Enjoy fantastical worlds and elements
Would like a story with relatable characters and emotion
Want a book that can probably make you cry

3. Lumberjanes

There's the calm before the storm, and there's the group photo before the rad stuff happens.

Jo, Molly, Mal, Ripley, and April are Lumberjanes (similar to girl scouts) who are spending a week at a summer camp in the woods. There are several normal camp activities planned, like hiking and canoeing, but things aren’t all that normal at Miss Qiunzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet's Camp for Hardcore Lady Types. The camp’s activities are frequently interrupted by strange creatures and events that probably aren’t approved by any camp officials.

Luckily, our main characters come together and use their unique knowledge and skills to overcome these challenges. Whether they’re deciphering anagrams, tricking Yetis, or following a path that requires knowledge of the Fibonacci sequence, the Lumberjanes work together to solve the mysteries in this strange forest. Friendship to the max!

Pick up these comics if you:

Enjoy the humor and dialogue in shows like Adventure Time
Want a comic that revolves around strange mysteries
Are looking for a book with a more non-traditional art style
Would like a comic that showcases the importance of being yourself
Have always wanted to see three-eyed foxes

2. Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Promise

You know the characters in the background are mentors because they have beards and angry eyebrows.

Nickelodeon’s show “Avatar: The Last Airbender” took the world by storm when it came out, but, like any good production, it left audiences wanting more. There were unanswered questions, and people wanted to spend more time with these characters, and in this setting.

Well, there’s some good news! This comic book series explores what happens immediately after the end of the show. Unlike many TV show tie-in comics, this one follows a singular plot rather than showcasing smaller, unconnected stories.

While there are several excellent ideas here, all of which are expertly executed, it boils down to a few key points. Chief among them is an impending war based on whether or not the Fire Nation’s colonies in the Earth Nation should remain, with compelling arguments on both sides. A subplot that isn’t addressed as much, but is vital to fans, is Zuko’s search for his mom.

It’s a great continuation of the show, with an excellent balance of humor and serious topics. There’s a lot for kids to enjoy, and a lot for the adults too.

Enjoy manga-style art
Love boomerangs.

1. The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl

I love how each volume takes a phrase with the word "Girl" and replaces it with "Squirrel". Squirrel Power, indeed.

Doreen Green has built something of a reputation fighting crime as the one and only Squirrel Girl, and now she’s heading off to college! After spending years living in the attic of the Avenger’s Mansion, she’s going to attend NYU and earn her bachelor’s degree in computer science.

However, New York city is wrought with criminals and villains, so Doreen can’t quit being Squirrel Girl while she pursues her education. She needs to find a balance between her studies, her friends, and her heroic activities. It will take all the powers of both a squirrel and a girl to make it work, but if anyone can do it, it’s the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl.

Pick up this comic series if you:

Want to see heroes solve problems with more than just violence
Need a comic book series with some well-written humor
Would like a comic with some cool lessons (like how to count to thirty-one on a single hand)
Aren’t too familiar with Marvel superheroes and villains

[Top 5] Avatar: The Last Airbender Best Avatars

Both Avatar: The Last Airbender and its sequel series, The Legend of Korra, feature dozens of powerful characters capable of bending classical elements to their will. Most powerful among those characters is the Avatar, the strongest bender in the world at any given moment and the only one capable of bending all four elements. We sorted through the history of the Avatar and ranked the five best incarnations of the Avatar spirit.

5. Roku

For most of A:TLA, we know Roku almost exclusively as Aang’s guide and chief connection to the Avatar spirit. We finally learn more about him in the season three episode, “The Avatar and the Firelord,” which flashes back to Roku’s youth and tells us how the Hundred-Year War started. What we learn about him is...umm, not great.

What’s great about Roku:

He had a pet dragon!

He’s 50% responsible for Zuko existing!
...erm, well, not much else. After Firelord Sozin suggested they team up to conquer the world, Roku—the man responsible for maintaining balance between the four nations—left him alone for multiple years, and is inexplicably unaware that the fire nation has invaded and colonized the earth kingdom.
As if that weren’t enough, after hanging Sozin from the flagpole by his underwear, Roku leaves him to his devices again for 25 years, time which Sozin likely used to devise his ultimate attack, only to die at the hands of—you guessed it—Sozin.

4. Kyoshi

The most recent natively earthbending Avatar, Kyoshi is best known for her feats of titanic bending strength. She founded the Dai Li, which did not go particularly well, and inspired the Kyoshi Warriors, which did go well. Call it a draw?

What’s great about Kyoshi:

She turned fans—fans—into an effective weapon. Not only did they enhance her airbending by increasing the volume she could manipulate, but they even made her earthbending more precise—evidently something she struggled with. A very creative use of tools.
SHE CREATED AN ISLAND WITH BENDING. AN ENTIRE, CITY-SIZED CHUNK OF EARTH WAS IN ONE PLACE, AND KYOSHI MOVED IT TO ANOTHER PLACE BY HERSELF. It doesn’t get much more powerful than that.
Unfortunately, she was a bit...tactless, let’s say. While creating the island, she killed Chin the Conqueror, the fallout of which led to Aang nearly being boiled alive and, even worse, allowed the episode “Avatar Day” to be made.

3. Wan

TLOK introduces Wan in “Beginnings,” the Avatar universe’s two-part Book of Genesis which shows how the first Avatar came to be. He’s responsible for shaping much of the Avatars’ lives, and the lessons he learned about spirituality and balance still ring true 10,000 years later. Consider his high placement a well-earned legacy award.

What’s great about Wan:

He actually kind of sucks as a person at first. He’s a lying thief,which is how he got his powers in the first place(stealing them from a lionturtle). His transformation into a hero, guided by spirits, demonstrates how humans and spirits coexisting can shape the world into a better place.
He defeats the literal incarnation of evil and darkness! Sure, he’s the one who released it on the world, but being the Avatar is all about results, right?
Before Wan came to the airbenders’ lionturtle, they’d never seen any other humans, and Wan had never seen airbenders. Without Wan, not only would there be no Avatar, but the four nations might still be living separately rather than in harmony.

2. Aang

Choosing between Aang and Korra is like picking a favorite child, only your children are the only thing standing between the world and eternal ruin. He may be runner-up here, but make no mistake: Aang is an incredible character who happens to be perfectly capable of leveling a continent.

What’s great about Aang:

Even forced to deal with a condensed version of the Avatar training program—he only gets a few months to master three elements and is taught exclusively by teenagers—Aang still manages to come through and end a war that had been raging for generations.
Depending on how much you blame him for his frozen sabbatical, Aang’s biggest threat—the war—isn’t on him so much as it’s on Roku. After he cleans up a mess that’s not really his, Aang oversees a largely peaceful time during which society and technology prosper and no major threats to world peace arise.
Not only does Aang defeat Firelord Ozai, but in doing so, he learns one of the most powerful Avatar techniques ever: the ability to permanently seal a person’s bending through energybending. His discovery of this ability not only allows him to beat Ozai without killing him, it plays a huge part in Korra’s development as the Avatar.

Our most recent Avatar is also the best one. She undergoes some truly brutal torture, including being poisoned (on a kids’ show!)and having her bending taken away—and she’s left to do it without the guidance of former Avatar spirits. In spite of that, she tackles greater threats than any Avatar had ever faced and leads the world into a more balanced and harmonious state than it had been in centuries.

What’s great about Korra:

Part of the Avatar’s job description is keeping balance between the four elements, and Korra earns huge points for her restoration of the once-extinct airbenders. As a bonus, she’s also responsible for bridging the gap between the physical and spiritual realms, so even more balance!
After Unalaq severs her connection with her past lives, Korra essentially starts from scratch. Even without the guidance of previous Avatars, she not only saves the world on multiple occasions but helps keep peace between benders, non-benders, and even spirits.
Both Korra and Aang often struggle with their emotions, but when it comes to control, Korra tops Aang in the most important aspect: the Avatar state. While Aang doesn’t really learn to move into and out of the Avatar state at will until the end of his series, Korra masters that ability early on in hers. Her command over the Avatar’s most potent weapon gives her the slightest of edges.
