What are the Underwater Locations in Assassin's Creed: Odyssey?

One of the most unique aspects of Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey is the enormous open-world map, which is significantly larger than any other game in the franchise so far. Approximately 50% of this map is water, and so players will spend much of the game travelling on the Adrestia. What many players miss, however, is the fact that the sea in Odyssey isn’t just something to travel over—there are 42 underwater locations in the game to be completed.

If players wish to unlock the Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey ‘Child of Poseidon Trophy and Achievement’, all of these locations must be completed and players that aspire towards the platinum trophy will need to collect this trophy first. These underwater locations can provide the players with loot like new armor sets, weapons, gold, ship designs, crews, and more. Once every location has been completed, the trophy or achievement will pop automatically. These locations do not need to be completed in any particular order, and those that aren’t on Kephallonia become accessible as soon as you unlock the Adrestia in Sequence 2 of the story.

Players should use Ikaros to mark the underwater treasures and the sharks that are usually found patrolling the area close by. The best way to clear out these locations is by sailing directly to them and then eliminating the sharks with a bow and arrow before diving in. Fighting the sharks is also possible by melee weapons under the water, but this wastes breath and leaves players vulnerable to attack. Kassandra/Alexios will have breath meters that players ought to keep an eye on, indicated by the blue bar above the health meter. While in the water, you can also lunge forward for a speed burst, but lunging in the water will cause the breath meter to deplete faster.

Below, we have listed out all 42 locations in alphabetical order, accompanied by a video indicating where the treasure is hidden in each location. We have also included the objectives to complete in each, what players will find there in terms of crews and ship designs, and if there is a main or side quest pertaining to that location. If there is anything of interest to note about this location, we have mentioned that, too.

1. Aigisthos Palace

This particular location in eastern Argolis is extremely deep, and the second treasure chest is not close to the actual palace ruins, making it hard to spot—the above video indicates where you will find it.

2. Alekto Shipwreck

The treasure that you are searching for here off the coast of the Isle of Thisvi is not in the shipwreck, but can be found in through the cave entrance next to the sunken ship.

3. Anaphi Shipwreck

This treasure is best collected while on the small island during the ‘Catch and Release’ quest. It is easy to locate as you don’t have to dive underwater—the treasure chest is instead located on the wrecked ship on the beach.

4. Ariabignes Shipwreck

Quest: Test of Character

This treasure can be acquired while searching for the ‘protective eye’ during the ‘Test of Character’ quest.

5. Cave of Wealth

This treasure is easy to locate during the quest ‘The Pre-Trial of Endurance’ if you swim inside the underwater cavern as in the video above.

6. Dorion Underwater Cave

Followers of Ares - Male (Crew Theme), Followers of Ares - Female (Crew Theme).

This treasure found in southern Lakonia is again made more difficult to find due to the dim lighting and the tricky location of the underwater cave entrance, but once Ikaros has located the chest it shouldn’t be too hard to find.

7. Hermit's Dive

Quest: Blood in the Water

This treasure is located in the Swordfish’s hideout during ‘Blood in the Water’, in the corner of the room, and can be looted once he is dead.

8. Islet of Zeus

Quest: Shark the Vagrant

This treasure can be found very early on in the game while still on Kephallonia during the ‘Shark the Vagrant’ quest, and will probably be the first underwater location you will complete.

9. Ketos Shipwreck

Quest: Crewless

This treasure must be looted during the quest ‘Crewless’ and is easy to locate. Following this quest, Kassandra has the option to recruit Gelon to the Adrestia.

10. Ktesipos's Shipwreck

1 Loot Treasure

This treasure is again easy to locate, and is best done early in the game while still on Kephallonia.

11. Nereides Monument

2 Loot Treasure

This treasure is easy to find, but swimming from the shore out to the ruins takes some time so it would be wise to sail out by boat. This monument is located off the coast of Mount Koryphum in Argolis.

12. Olympic Shipwreck

Pegasos Figurehead (Figurehead)

This treasure located off the coast of Elis is underneath the deck of the ship, so make sure to resurface for air if it is hard to locate.

13. Palace of Amphitrite

Quest: The Gods of the Aegean Sea

There are three chests to locate in the palace ruins that are found between Thera and Paros, one of which is a hint about a cult member in the quest-line ‘Gods of the Aegean Sea’. It is probably best to come up for air before searching for the third chest.

14. Pavlopetri

The Hound of Hades (Ship Design)

The second chest containing the Hound of Hades ship design is tricky to locate, underneath the ruins that can be found off the coast of the Dioskouroi Peninsula in Lakonia.

15. Persian Remains

These chests are easy to locate and find off the coast of Lokris.

16. Phaleron Sunken Harbor

This treasure is extremely easy to find in these ruins in Phaleron Sandy Bay, and should pose no issues.

17. Phoibean Lagoon

The Satyr (Ship Design)

The Phoibean Lagoon at Salamis is another easy location to complete.

18. Polydektes Lagoon

This treasure off the coast of the Pirate Islands can be found by swimming through the darkened underwater cave, but is not hard to locate.

19. Poseidon's Fury

There are again three chests to locate in these ruins north of Patrai in Achaia, so it is best to come up for hair before searching for the third.

20. Prototype Trireme of Ameinokles

With just one chest to find in the Korinthian Gulf, this location is relatively easy to complete.

21. Purrhos the Red

With just one chest to find in Pandora’s Cove, Malis, this location is relatively easy to complete.

22. Ruins of Arne

Quest: Language of the Ancients

In order to open this chest, which is found in Lake Kopais, Boeotia, players will need to swim forward to the skeleton nearby and loot the key to unlock it. This location is part of the ‘Language of the Ancients’ quest but can be completed before this quest opens up.

23. Ruins of the Sea People

Skip to 1:37 in the above video to find out where the chests are in between the Silver Islands. One is located underneath some ruins, but they are not hard to locate.

24. Shark Bay

Quest: The Elixir

This treasure is found during the ‘Elixir’ quest-line. Skip to 2:20 in the above video to locate the chest in Shark Bay.

25. Shipwreck

No location is specified for the shipwreck simply called ‘Shipwreck’, but this particular shipwreck can be located out at sea north west of the Cradle of Myths.

26. Shipwreck Cove

Cultist Clue

There are four items to locate in Shipwreck Cove—two treasure chests above ground, one treasure chest underwater, and one cultist clue. The cultist clue is located in the nearby rocks and is tricky to find even when close-by.

27. Shipwreck of Ajax

Quest Item: Thaletas' Helmet

Quest: Thaletas’ Way

This location can be found during the ‘Thaletas’ Way’ questline. You have the option of lying to Thaletas and saying you couldn’t find the helmet so as to keep it for yourself, or returning it. The second chest in this location is found by swimming through a dark cave next to the shipwreck.

28. Shipwreck of Dionysos and the Pirate

These chests off the coast of Naxos are not hard to find.

29. Shipwreck of Nestor

The two chests located beside this shipwreck off the island of Schiza are easy to find.

This treasure can be found during the Blood and Water quest in Euboea, south of the Forgotten Ruins of Makris.

31. Stormfall Bay

These two chests at Stormfall Bay are easy to locate and shouldn’t pose a challenge.

32. Submerged Minoan Palace

Quest: We're Treasure Hunters

This treasure can only be located during the quest ‘We’re Treasure Hunters’ which opens up directly after ‘We’re not Thieves’. ‘We’re Treasure Hunters’ can end in three different ways—you can lie to Obelia, you can give her the treasure, or you can kill her.

33. Sunken Ruins

This treasure can be found during the small side quest ‘Say That Again!’ on the western side of Messara but can also be located without doing the quest. We recommend doing the quest even if purely for the blacksmith’s reward, as it is extremely easy.

Quest: The Tribute

This treasure is located during the side-quest ‘Tribute’ which opens up at the Site of Iphigenia’s Sacrifice once ‘Chasing Phantoms’ is complete.

35. Sunken Temple of Demeter

There is only one chest to find here off the coast of Achaia and so it should not pose a challenge.

36. Sunken Temple of Eileithyia

2 Loot Treasure

These two chests are located within the ruins off the coast of Messara and so can prove a little harder to locate.

37. Sunken Wreck of Datis

There are three items to find in this location off the south-western coast of Delos but they are all easy to locate and easily accessible.

38. Underwater Cavern

Quest Item: Triton's Shell of the Titans

Quest: She Who Controls the Seas

This location is part of the side-quest ‘She Who Controls The Seas’ given to you by Xenia after you complete the mission ‘Sacred Vow’. Xenia gives you two maps, one of which is fake—Triton’s Shell is located in Makedonia, as in the above video. The three chests can be found by accessing the underwater cavern and swimming through.

39. Underwater Cavern

Barbarians (Crew Theme)

Though no location is specified, this cavern refers to one which is found off the coast of Attika.

40. Underwater Ruins of Dyspontion

2 Loot Treasure

The treasure in these ruins in Elis is very easy to find and shouldn’t pose a challenge.

41. Vouliagmeni Sinkhole

1 Loot Treasure

This treasure in Attika is again easy to find and shouldn’t pose a challenge.

42. Wreckage of the Lost Bandit

1 Loot Treasure

This location on Kephallonia is one that you can complete very early in the game, and as such is quite easy to find.

Conclusion

And so, there we have it. All 42 locations. This is a challenging trophy to obtain, in part because some of the locations are hard to find, hard to clear, or even easy to miss. The best way to clear all 42 locations is to simply do them over the course of the game and not all at once, since most of the locations are on opposing sides of the map. Alternatively, players working towards the “Hermes’ Homie” trophy can do them in conjunction. One important final thing to note is that there is no trophy or achievement that can be obtained for finishing the game on a higher difficulty, and so players can complete the game on Easy Mode without worrying that they might miss out.

Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey Best Difficulty—Which to Choose

What Options Are There?

Compared to other games in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, the sprawling open world of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is by far the most RPG-heavy—it can be gruelling, especially for fans of the franchise less accustomed to the style of RPGs. Luckily, however, there are ways of adapting the gameplay to suit your preferred style, and at the beginning there are choices to be made that will affect how you experience the game: exploration mode, level scaling, and, of course, difficulty.

This article is not a review of Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, but an overview of the options regarding the difficulty of the gameplay. These options work together to influence the overall difficulty of the game, and so it is important to match them together in a way that suits your play-style.

Guided or Exploration

Decide how you will explore the massive open world of Odyssey

The first decision to be made is whether you will play in one of two modes, Guided or Exploration:

The Guided mode is your typical open-world style, whereby quest markers are followed upon taking on a new quest. Overall, it is nice, easy to follow, and conventional.
Exploration, on the other hand, requires you to interrogate the NPCs that give you quests, and you must probe them for information in order to figure out where to go next. It makes the game feel a bit more like real life, where there are no markers in the sky informing you as to where random people and places you just found out about are. Exploration mode requires you to think a little harder about what you’re doing rather than just mindlessly heading from location to location.

If you are like me, and directions are not your strong suit—even in a virtual world with an easy-to-follow-map—you’re probably better off simply going with Guided mode, at least for the first play-through.

Level Scaling

Decide what level your opponents will be

The next option is regarding level scaling, which has a much larger impact on how you experience combat in the game. When the game was first released, the most frequent complaint that players had was that the scaling made the game too hard. Enemies constantly scaled to keep things challenging, but all that really meant was that players never got much stronger relative to your enemies, regardless of how much effort players put into building a powerful character.

In 2019 Ubisoft introduced a change to the game by providing alternatives for how players wanted to handle scaling. The Level Scaling option can help you adjust the challenge posed by quests and enemies to better match your personal style of playing, and there are four options:

Default/Normal allows the default, pre-set difficulty to dictate the challenge of the content. This is how the game was played before Ubisoft introduced any options for scaling.
Heavy allows the content to match your current player level.
Medium allows the content to be up to two levels below your current player level.
Light allows the content to be up to four levels below your current player level.

This system doesn’t really need much further explanation, though it is important to note that you can mix and match these levels with different Difficulties; for example, playing on Easy Difficulty Mode with Heavy Level Scaling.

Difficulty Mode

Players will finally then select what overall difficulty to play the game at. I found that the difficulty level chosen affects how you enjoy the game more than most other RPGs, and especially when compared to other Assassin’s Creed games.

It is important to note that there are no rewards or trophies for playing the game at harder difficulties, so players don’t have to worry about missing out on any potential achievements if they undertake the game at a lower difficulty.

Having played the game at each of the four difficulty options for different lengths of times, I have concluded about my own thoughts on the best way to play Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, and so here is my review on each level.

Easy Mode

Come face to face with some of the best figures from Greek mythology.

I have encountered two camps of people who have played Odyssey: those who think that Nightmare Mode is too easy, and those who think that Easy Mode is too hard. Of those two camps, I think I come closer to falling into the latter. I don’t think that Odyssey is a simple game , and that is due, mostly, to the overall size and scope of the world. In fact, I would equate ‘Easy’ in Odyssey to ‘Normal’ in Assassin’s Creed: Origins.

There are hundreds of quests to do and so many places to explore, but in order to actually see a large portion of the map without being immediately cut down by someone dozens of levels above you, you need to grind. Grinding is an aspect of almost all open world RPGs, but Ieven on Easy Mode Odyssey takes grinding to the next level. Simply following the story is not an option; in order to level up enough to follow the main story, you’ll still need to complete a lot of side missions, contracts, and bounties in order to earn XP.

It is a turnoff for gamers who want to get through the game as quickly as possible while still fully experiencing Odyssey’s story that you can easily get stuck on one enemy for what feels like hours on end. Even on Easy Mode, I very nearly gave up the game for good while fighting Medusa as it took me countless turns to finally beat her. I felt like I was slowly going insane, carrying out repetitive movements again and again and again and again and dying over and over until I finally, by chance, defeated her. And yet when I replayed the game on Hard Mode, I slew Medusa in one go. Go figure.

For those who simply want to experience the game without too much of a challenge, Easy mode is the obvious choice.

Normal Mode

Some opponents have abilities that make them much harder to defeat, even at your level.

The second difficulty is exactly as it says on the tin—it’s not too hard, not too easy. Normal Mode isn’t that much different from Easy, save for the fact that you’re going to spend a bit longer hacking away at some enemies. That was the only real, discernible difference between the two.

Normal Mode is a nice starting place for players who are familiar with both RPGs and Assassin’s Creed mechanics, but who don’t want to launch themselves into the deep end straight off the mark. Overall, there isn’t that much of a difference when compared to Easy, since the options for level scaling were introduced in 2019. Which of the four scaling options you choose is what really matters with regards to Normal Mode.

Hard Mode

Some of the best fights you will experience will be against the Cult of Kosmos.

Hard Mode was my favorite way to play, out of the four difficulty options. Once I was familiar with the game and its combat style, Hard Mode presented enough of a challenge to engage my interest and ensure each quest felt refreshing and new.

As the game progresses and the world opens up, it becomes more of a simply compelling challenge rather than a sluggish chore to complete quests and spend time on some of the other aspects of the game, such as the Navy Battles and the Conquest Battles. But these aspects also mean that unlike other Assassin’s Creed games, you cannot simply spend all your time concentrating on building up stealth.

I found I did best on Hard Mode when I spent my ability points wisely—on second wind healing, on archery, and on some of the stealth abilities, rather than building up a hulking strong warrior. These abilities and how they affect your fighting style also make the game especially interesting when it comes to fighting certain enemies, especially the Legendary beasts, as you cannot simply attack them and then run away to heal.

There are many reasons why I enjoyed Hard Mode the most. It was gruelling enough that it still felt like an accomplishment to finish the main three storylines, but it was not impossible, once I got the hang of the game.

Speaking of impossible…

Nightmare Mode

Conquest Battles are one of the most enjoyable aspects of Odyssey.

I have encountered plenty of folk in online forums who claimed that Nightmare Mode was just too easy, too repetitive, too boring. I imagine such folk are perhaps professional gamers who have spent thousands upon thousands of hours gliding through every game out there, and now find that nothing is enough of a challenge for them. The best way I can think to describe Nightmare Mode is to describe it as an open-world Dark Souls set in the beautiful islands of ancient Greece, where one light stab is enough to bring about your untimely demise and the only way to avoid dying is to just keep running away.I was easily killed by enemies at the exact same level as me in only a handful of hits, but the enemies were essentially damage sponges.

Slashing a sword at a basic Athenian soldier, much longer than someone like Kassandra/Alexios would, simply wasn’t entertaining or realistic to the game’s lore, and being overwhelmed by more than one enemy meant instant death.

Don’t get me wrong—this mode will definitely appeal to a lot of hardened gamers with the patience to die over and over again; I simply am not one of them. Even so, I do recommend this Mode to anyone looking for a real obstacle to overcome, or anyone who hates Kassandra/Alexios enough to find pleasure in watching them continuously die in increasingly gruesome ways.

Conclusion

Don't be put out if the game seems too hard at first.

Overall, Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey is a game that finds innovative ways to challenge its players while still creating a brilliantly compelling story. This game captures the essence of Classical Greece, with period-accurate architecture, clothing, and weapons that work alongside a brilliant cast of historical and fictional characters, during the real events as recorded by the historian Thucydides. Of course, it should not be mistaken as an historically accurate game, but it still manages to feel like ancient Greece brought to life. The ability to discuss philosophy with Socrates, fight alongside Brasidas, flirt with Alcibiades, plot with Pericles—it is the potential to do these things is what makes the world of Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey so appealing.

The decisions regarding the game’s difficulty will influence your thoughts regarding the game, and if you find it too hard at a particular level I implore you to lower it and not give up, as this game is truly unique, and an enjoyable experience for anyone with interest in the ever-awe-inspiring world of Ancient Greece.

Mythical Creatures or Legendary Creatures?

As a student of Classics who has long awaited an open-world RPG set in the promising, fascinating, and enthralling setting of ancient Greece, Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey felt like a dream come true upon its release. The Assassin's Creed franchise has always blended together historical accuracy with the supernatural superstitions, literature, and beliefs of the past. Since Origins they have expanded upon the magical and mystical elements that the historical setting of each game offers, and Odyssey goes even further than Origins in this sense. In this article, we will look at the Mythical Creatures that appear in this game—the Sphinx, the Cyclops, the Minotaur, and Medusa. This is not a step-by-step guide as to how you will defeat these Creatures, but is instead a guide that will aid you in finding them, and a review of the difficulty involved in doing so.

The creators of Odyssey take full advantage of the rich mythology of the classical Greek era. The fascinating source material shines through with terrifying beasts, cursed men and women, and dangerous Demi -gods prowling throughout the game’s open world. While players will mostly take on pirates, soldiers, and members of the Cult of Kosmos, one of the most appealing aspects of the game is the potential to come face-to-face with some of the highly intriguing creatures scattered across Greek literature.

As part of the ‘Goddesses’ Hunt’ quest-line which is given to players by Daphnae of the Daughters of Artemis, players can fight against some of the legendary animals of Greek Mythology, such as Kalisto the Bear, the Erymanthian Boar, the Kretan Bull, and the Nemian Lion. The Erymanthian Boar in particular puts up one of the toughest fights in the game, due to the fact that his poisonous fart cloud—yes, his poisonous fart cloud—can easily choke you to death.

While these Legendary Creatures do pose an exciting challenge, they are often easily confused with the four Mythical Creatures. It is these Creatures and the side quests leading up to them that really strike a chord with players, as these are some of the hardest, most gruelling, and most interesting fights in the game.

Coming face-to-face with these Mythical Creatures is only possible around mid-way through the main story, once the ‘Between Two Worlds’ quest-line has opened up. This quest is given to players once they have entered the ruins on the island of Thera. After meeting your true father and discovering the existence of Atlantis, you will unlock a quest-line called the ‘Gates of Atlantis’. To open the gate, you will be tasked with finding four lost Isu artifacts that were stolen and which are now dispersed all across the Greek world. Obviously, the artifacts are not simply scattered across the map, waiting for you to come across them. They instead are in the possession of the four Mythical Creatures who you will have to face, starting with the Sphinx.

Try your hand at outwitting the Sphinx.

If you are anything like me, you will probably want to immediately drop everything else in the game and set out in search of the Sphinx. I highly recommend that you reign yourself in, and just wait until later in the game, once the main story is complete or at least almost complete. At the end of the day, Kassandra/Alexios might be the heroic ‘Eagle Bearer’, moulded in the image of Oedipus, Odysseus, Theseus, and Perseus, but we are not.

The Lore of the Sphinx (Level 34)

How to find the Sphinx

The Sphinx is unique among the Mythical Creatures. There is no winding and complex side-quest involved in order to get to her—you just have to discover her location and force her to appear. This is achieved by entering the Strange Ruins in Boeotia where you will find a statue of the Sphinx and a man called Gorgias who will direct you to find his apprentice Pibos.

Pibos, like you, was in search of the missing half of the Sphinx Medallion, but unlike you (hopefully), he met his rather unfortunate demise in doing so. By defeating the Alpha Lion that lives in the Tomb of Menoikeus, you will find the half of the Sphinx Medallion that you need. After heading back to the Strange Ruins to place the Medallion in the statue, you will find that Gorgias and the statue of the Sphinx have vanished.

The Sphinx will at last appear in her true form. I was mentally prepared—though not at all physically prepared—for a boss-fight at that moment in my first play-through. Greek literature ought to have provided me with a hint as Oedipus, in his famously sombre story, never raised his blade against the Sphinx at Thebes—he solved her riddle. I was therefore fortunate that I never received the battle I was anticipating. Beating the Sphinx instead requires you to answer three of her riddles correctly, so if wits are your strong suit, or if you’ve made it this far in the game by just looking for cheats online, this quest will suit you perfectly.

Overall, I enjoyed the Sphinx storyline. In part this was because it tied in with my favorite Greek tragedy, Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex, but also because it lured me into thinking that the Mythical Creatures would be no challenge at all because of how deceptively easy it was. Believing that the remainder of the Mythical Creatures will also put up a fight no more taxing than a stroll in the park, you may set out next to find the Cyclops.

A God Among Men (Level 35)

The questline that culminates with a fight against the Cyclops begins on the island of Kythera. He isn’t found on Kythera; instead, you are forced to embark on an extended adventure given to you by a man believing himself to be a god.

There are three quests you must complete to finally reach the Cyclops:

A God Among Men
Left to Dye
Stairway to Olympos

After completing this series of missions you will sail to the Forgotten Isle, which is found off the coast of Phokis to the west. There, you will finally confront the Cyclops.

Ultimately, the Cyclops is just a big boss fight, and the only real way to beat him, on any difficulty, is by dodging his attacks. Once the cave roof starts crumbling, too, the only way to evade getting squashed to death is to simply dodge the chunks of rock raining down.

Despite his hulking size and earth-shattering swings, it isn’t too hard to wear the Cyclops down. Like the Sphinx before him, this fight boosted my ego and hubris far more than I deserved; I was Icarus, flying higher and higher, just waiting for someone—the Minotaur, coincidently—to drag me back to earth.

Myths and Minotaurs (Recommended level of 28, but should be at least 40)

The quest to find the Minotaur is hidden away on Messara, way down along the southern border of the map. Head to Knossos Palace in the area called Minos's Legacy and find the quest ‘Myths and Minotaurs’ whereby an increasingly irritating child named Ardos will set you off on a series of missions necessary to acquire the key into the Labyrinth.

Quite a lot is involved in finding the Minotaur, compared to the Sphinx and the Cyclops. Once these missions are complete, you'll be able to head down to the catacombs, where you will follow along a golden thread that can be used to navigate your way around a maze, before facing the Minotaur.

Employing the same tactics as in the Cyclops fight is an effective way of fighting the Minotaur—dodge, dodge, dodge. However, he is a much harder enemy to defeat than the previous two opponents were combined. In the end, it only took me several dozen attempts on my Easy-Mode play-through to beat him, which was nothing at all compared to the fight with Medusa. In fact, it is really the laborious effort it takes to finally arrive at the Minotaur’s lair that makes this questline feel more difficult than it is. I did find that on my Hard Mode play-through the Minotaur fight dragged on for an exceedingly long time, so I would recommend coming to the fight over-prepared rather than simply at the suggested level.

Romancing the Stone Garden (Level 46, but really Level 50)

Medusa. Ah, Medusa.

Romancing the Stone Garden, the questline that culminates with the fight against Medusa, referred to in dialogue as the ‘Writhing Dead’, can be located in the Petrified Valley in Lesbos. I may moan a lot about how hard the Medusa fight is, but honestly, the questline involved in reaching her was one of my favorites in the game, as I have a terribly soft spot for tales revolving around star-crossed lovers. Bryce’s lover has disappeared within the ruins of the Petrified Temple found in the Petrified Forest, located deep in the Petrified Valley—they got very creative with the naming of this one.

The quests that will lead you to Medusa’s lair are:

Romancing the Stone Garden
Love's Long Shadow
A Slithery Plea
Heavy is the Spear
Hard to Artemis
Keys to Happiness
Writhing Dread

Once these quests are complete, you’ll finally face the hardest boss to fight in Odyssey, and, if you win, retrieve the final missing Artifact. Sometimes at night I have vivid nightmares about this fight, from when I played it on Easy Mode. When it came time to fight her on Hard Mode, I had flashbacks to being pummeled to death every two minutes by the Nameless King in Dark Souls. Those fights had nothing at all in common, save for the continuously recurring and increasingly infuriating loading screen that popped up every time I died.

Like any good boss fight, there are stages in the battle against Medusa. Just when you think you’ve figured out her moves, the fight kicks up a gear, and Medusa avails of her summoned minions to help her out. Ultimately, this fight can be won through some routine movements and well-timed attacks, but it drags on longer than most fights in the game, at nearly ten minutes on Easy Mode. It cannot be overstated that players need to come prepared for this battle the first time around, and armed with the best weapons.

Conclusion

Ultimately, the Mythical Creatures are one of the most enjoyable parts of Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. On all difficulty levels they present a tough challenge to overcome, but there is no denying the huge sense of accomplishment once they have been defeated. They also pay homage to their original tales, too, in a way that serves to highlight just how successfully the game weaves together history and myth. Walking in the footsteps of the greatest heroes of Classical Mythology is an exciting opportunity for anyone with a love of the ancient world, and these fights are a gruelling, arduous, and rewarding experience for players of all kinds.

What Are The Best Builds in AC Odyssey?

Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey lets you annihilate your targets in a multitude of ways: firing arrows as a sharpshooting, Legolas-like archer; slashing and smashing foes head-on as a savage, Jon Snow-esque combatant; and/or craftily stabbing enemies from the shadows like Arya Stark.

The three skill trees in Odyssey—Hunter, Warrior and Assassin—offer a variety of abilities that allows you to build many different character set-ups. It’s entirely too easy to misspend those coveted ability points (like I’ve done) as you’re learning the game’s systems and figuring out your playstyle.

While you can reset your abilities at any time for a reasonable fee, wouldn’t you rather spend your drachmae on new gear, upgrades and engravings? Or, maybe you’re nearing the end of your odyssey and looking for the very best build.

3. Cunning Assassin (Best for early to mid-game)

The Shadow Assassin skill makes taking guards out a cinch.

Like to cleverly sneak to your targets for that ultra satisfying assassination? If you prefer the quiet, stealth-first playstyle of the older Assassin’s Creed games, then consider the Cunning Assassin build.

A great character setup for early and mid-level players, its high assassin damage will let you subtly dispatch foes. Bonuses to sneaking make fort infiltration a breeze.

Intoxicating your enemies, staying hidden and escaping when you’re overwhelmed are keys to thriving as an assassin in Ancient Greece. And don’t forget to hide those bodies!

Essential abilities

Shadow Assassin boosts assassination damage and automatically loots your enemy. When upgraded, crit damage increases (tier 2), and assassinations refill adrenaline (tier 3). No-brainer here.
Venomous Attacks applies poison to your weapons and arrows. Once you hit your enemies with enough poison they become intoxicated. They’ll receive damage over time, and their armor and damage output will weaken—which in turn make your attacks stronger. This helps compensate for the Assassin’s lack of warrior abilities and damage.
- When fully upgraded, the cooldown disappears, meaning you’ll constantly be intoxicating foes during combat.
Vanish stuns nearby foes with a blinding flash of light. Useful when your cover is blown and enemies get too close for comfort. Just pop it and creep around the corner, or to the nearest tall grass. You’ll reopen opportunities to deal that sweet, sweet assassin damage while your confused pursuers rummage the area like children playing hide-and-seek.
- Be mindful that attacking enemies while they’re stunned will interrupt the stun. Make sure you’re fleeing and breaking the enemy’s line of sight to set yourself up for an assassination attack that will turn the tide of battle.
Rush Assassination utilizes the magical Spear of Leonidas to teleport your character to stab a foe for 100% assassin damage. You can also chain the attack to an additional enemy. Useful for taking out multiple patrols without breaking stealth.
- Upgrading lets you chain up to three additional enemies and increases damage, so you can end many fights before they even begin.
Hero Strike is arguably the most indispensable ability in the assassin’s toolkit. You attack with a single strike of the almighty Spear of Leonidas for 60% Assassin damage. Can be used in active conflict. Hero Strike is the golden ticket to making your assassin viable in regular combat.
- While 60% might not seem like much, keep in mind that your assassin damage is always much higher than your warrior damage. Six-tenths of this relatively large number winds up being a significant amount of damage in open combat.
- Hero Strike can also follow an unsuccessful assassination. Sometimes a sneak attack is not enough to kill an enemy, and Hero Strike will almost always finish your target off after a surprise blow to the back.
Critical Assassination is a super sneak attack, dealing double assassin damage. Use this skill instead of regular assassination attacks whenever you can.
Stealth Master drastically improves your sneaking. It reduces noise made while moving and assassinating (tier 1), makes you less visible to enemies while crouching (tier 2) and increases all damage done outside of combat at night (tier 3). Absolutely instrumental for staying undetected.

Other helpful abilities

Slow Time makes you run faster than Hermes for 5 seconds (tier 1), 7 sec (tier 2) or 10 sec (tier 3). Useful for circling around a group of foes during combat (if you choose to engage instead of fleeing) and creating space for ranged offense in active conflict. Can also be used as an alternative to Vanish.
Predator Shot nicely complements a stealthy playstyle. You fire a remote controlled arrow that travels further than a normal arrow and deals 430% hunter damage (tier 1), 500% hunter damage (tier 2), or 500% hunter damage (tier 3), which can put down most enemies with one headshot. If done from a safe enough distance, you won’t be spotted.
Sixth Sense slows time when an enemy spots you. If you aim your bow, it’ll snap to your target’s chest and deal an extra 50% hunter damage (tier 1), 75% hunter damage (tier 2), or 100% hunter damage (tier 3). A quick and easy way to eliminate pesky patrols, so you can get back to sneaking.
Second Wind heals you. ‘Nuff said.

Gear

Your best bet for a primary weapon is something that lands quick hits like a sword or daggers. They ensure rapid poison buildup and are great for 1v1 combat.

For a secondary weapon, use something that inflicts sweeping damage like a staff, spear, heavy blade or blunt. Their long reach will come in handy when you’re travelling and a pack of overly aggressive wolves ambushes you like a squad of guerilla soldiers.

Prioritize gear that buff critical stats, assassin and poison damage.

Recommended gear:

Primary weapon: Xiphos of Dionysos increases Hero Strike damage +20%, assassin damage +15% and crit damage +25%. You get this sword from completing the main story quest “A Bloody Feast” in episode 7.
Secondary weapon: Hermes’s Kerukeion increases poison damage and buildup +15%, assassin damage +15% and further boosts poison damage +20%. You can get this staff from completing the side quest “Let My Patients Go” in Boeotia. Pairs nicely with the Snake Armor Set (see below).
Ranged weapon: Fanged Bow turns all normal arrows into poison arrows, increases assassin damage +15% and poison damage +20%. You can get it by looting the legendary chest in the cave of Mt. Zas in the Cove of Zeus, on Naxos Island.
The Pirate Armor Set grants a +15% boost to assassin ability damage and further increases regular assassin damage. You can get it by eliminating every cultist in the Gods of the Aegean Sea line.
The Snake Armor Set enhances your poison by increasing its damage and weakening effect +10%, while also boosting assassin damage. You can get it by taking out every cultist in the Eyes of Kosmos line.

2. Versatile Mercenary (Best for flexibility)

Following this surprise attack with Rush Assassination, if you're quick enough, would yeild fortuitous results.

Don’t want to worry about getting squished in combat? Want to be effective in all three playstyles? A hybrid build is great if you want to explore and enjoy the game’s many activities.

You’ll appreciate the capability to adapt on-the-fly to unexpected situations, such as bloodthirsty mercenaries charging you while you’re assaulting forts, rabid wild animals rushing you in the wilderness, or encountering an enemy captain that you want to recruit for your ship.

You’ll be able to handle multiple foes in combat, while still being capable of assassinating most enemies in one shot.

Hunter abilities

Multi-Shot targets several enemies at once for increased hunter damage. Use it in conjunction with Slow Time to suppress groups of enemies. Also effective in conquest battles, given all the opportunities you have to move around and position yourself for ranged, multipronged aggression.
Archery Master increases hunter damage +20%, and using hunter abilities no longer consumes arrows (tier 1); boosts hunter damage +30% and headshot damage +20%, and refills partially drained adrenaline bars outside of combat (tier 2); buffs hunter and headshot damage +40%, and slows down time when aiming your bow in midair (tier 3).
- Tip: Tier 2’s attribute—passive adrenaline refill—can be your best friend. If your adrenaline is low in between conflict engagements, hunt deer. Just one fallen stag is enough to refill one adrenaline bar.
Sixth Sense (see above) will reduce your headaches when you want to play stealthy.
Arrow Master is extremely helpful in recruiting lieutenants for your ship. You only need to spend one ability point to unlock paralyzing arrows. Stealthy knockout attacks are not enough to deal with Legendary lieutenants, so paralyzing arrows are a boon when you’re trying to non-lethally take out enemy captains in active combat.

Warrior abilities

Ring of Chaos generates a blast that knocks down enemies in your immediate vicinity while inflicting increased warrior damage. Use it when you’re overwhelmed in CQC and need breathing room for your next move.
Second Wind (see above) is crucial for any build.
Overpower Attacks use three adrenaline segments for massively powerful melee attacks, reminding us that Assassin’s Creed has always had some of the most visually pleasing animations in gaming. Use it when you have adrenaline to spare and need to dish out some quick, significant damage.
Weapons Master buffs warrior damage +20% (tier 1); warrior damage goes up +30% and crit chance increases +5% (tier 2); +40% boost to warrior damage, +10% crit chance increase, and using both light and heavy attacks during a combo boosts the finishing move’s damage (tier 3). So, make sure to alternate between light and heavy attacks when you’re hacking and slashing at your foes.
Gear Master increases armor +30% (tier 1); increases armor +60%, and incoming ranged damage decreases -5% (tier 2); increases armor +90%, incoming ranged damage decreases -10% and a 10% chance that attacking enemies will stagger (tier 3). Greatly improves your defense to make you withstand more damage.

Assassin abilities

Slow Time (see above), coupled with the Dagger of Kronus, is key to the deadliness of this build(more on that below). Use this ability to position yourself for striking enemies in the back.
Shadow Assassin (see above) so you’re able to actually assassinate foes in one hit.
Stealth Master (see above) to improve your sneak.
Rush Assassination (see above) for clearing out forts.

Gear

While you can be flexible with your weapons in a jack-of-all-trades build, this particular build employs daggers for melee weapons. Focus on perks that buff critical stats, give chances to ignore damage and boost assassin damage.

Make sure you complete the side quest “Journey’s End” in Elis for the Atlantean Blade, which carries the +30% armor penetration perk. You should engrave this on your daggers to help compensate for this build’s relatively low warrior damage. The +2% damage restored as health perk is also great, which you get from the Achilles/Amazon set, attained by eliminating every cultist in the Heroes of the Cult line.

Recommended gear:

Primary weapon: Arachne’s Stingers apply poison to every melee attack, boost assassin damage +15% and poison damage +20%. Poison’s effects will further help compensate for this build’s relatively low warrior damage. You can get these daggers by defeating the mercenary whose name ends with “the Weaver.”
Secondary weapon: Dagger of Kronus grants a +40% damage bonus when attacking from behind, buffs warrior damage +15% and damage with daggers +15%. When paired with Slow Time, it becomes a tool of death while you (literally) run circles around your enemies.
Ranged weapon: Fanged Bow (see above)
Head: Eye Patch boosts Assassin damage +18%, dagger damage +24% and crit chance at full health +16%.
Arms: Athenian Gauntlets increase Assassin damage +18%, crit chance +8% and crit damage +40%.
Chest: Mercenary Breastplate grants +18% Assassin damage, +40% crit damage and +32% poison damage.
Waist: Mercenary Belt gives +18% Assassin damage, +80% crit damage while full health and +8% crit chance.
Legs: Brawler’s Boots boost Assassin damage +18%, crit damage while full health +80% and crit chance while full health +16%.

1. Critical Master (Best for efficient killing)

With this build, you can rest assured that you'll be a murder machine.

Want to tear through enemies with just a few attacks? If you’re into min/maxing, the Critical Master build is for you. It gives you a 100% chance of landing critical hits.

Yes, you’ll see those popping yellow damage numbers with every strike. You’ll need to be a high level to pull this off—at least level 91, as gear level 91 and up can carry +10% and +20% crit chance while full health. These perks are necessary for reaching 100% crit chance.

You’ll also have very high assassination damage, as constantly landing critical hits means you don’t need to worry about warrior and hunter damage.

I imagine you’ve put a good amount of hours into Odyssey if you’re able to work this build, so enjoy the fruits of your labor!

Advised abilities

Battlecry of Ares channels your misthios’s godly power to deal +20% more damage for 10 seconds, and enemy attacks can’t kill you during this time (tier 1); +35% damage for 15 sec (tier 2); +50% more damage for 20 sec, and hits from the enemy increase attack power. Best used at the beginning of fights so the cooldown starts sooner, allowing you to use this devastating ability more often.
Overpower Attacks (see above) for big damage in open combat.
Gear Master (see above) for more resilience.
Second Wind (see above) is invaluable for this build. A good chunk of your increased crit chances will come while you’re at full health, so it’s important to heal if need be.
Hero Strike (see above) for active conflict and following up on assassin attacks.
Critical Assassination (see above) for better assassinations.
Rush Assassination (see above) for chaining one-shot kills.
Shadow Assassin (see above) for better assassinations.
Archery Master (see above) for adrenaline bar refill.
Arrow Master (see above) for knocking out lieutenants for your ship.

Gear

Perks are the meat and potatoes of this build. You generally want to equip items that boost assassin damage, crit chance and crit damage.

Make sure you visit Hephaistos’s Workshop in Malis to purchase the +10% crit chance perk, in case you can’t find gear that natively has crit chance perks. It’ll also behoove you to seek out the Anigmata Ostrakas that improve the crit chance while full health perk: Hand Docked, Rightful King, Stadium Love, To the Edge of the World and Odor in the Court.

If your gear alone doesn’t add up to 100% crit chance, spend your ability points on the mastery levels that enhance crit chance. Invest leftover points into crit damage, total armor(since this build is a bit squishy)and cooldown duration for all abilities, so you can use Battlecry of Ares and Hero Strike more often.

Recommended gear:

Primary weapon: Minotaur’s Labrys buffs warrior damage +25%, crit damage +50% and reduces Overpower Attacks cost to two adrenaline bars. You can get this heavy blade from defeating the minotaur in the side quest “He Waits” in Messara.
Secondary weapon: Harpe of Perseus boosts hunter damage +15%, crit damage +25% and -25% cooldown duration for all abilities. You can get this sword from killing Medusa in the side quest “Writhing Dead” in Lesbos.
Ranged weapon: Hunter’s Bow buffs crit chance +10%, warrior damage by +24% and assassin damage by +20%.
Head: Mercenary Hood gives +50% crit damage, +20% crit chance while full health and +24% assassin damage.
Arms: Gauntlets of Ares boost assassin damage +14%, all damage +5% and +15% crit damage.
Chest: Restored Mycenaean Armor grants +24% warrior damage, +50% crit damage and +60% total armor. The increased armor helps you withstand more damage. There are no chest pieces with crit chance perks, so this one is great for its increased crit damage.

Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey is like all the blacksmiths in King’s Landing laboring to equip the Lannister army for The Last War, when it comes to the amount of gear you can loot from chests and defeated enemies.

The sheer quantity of helmets, gauntlets, torso armor, belts and footwear you acquire, along with a bevy of stat-altering perks they possess, make it difficult to determine which armor sets are the crème de la crème.

1. Choosing Your Own Character

In the newest Assassin’s Creed game, players have the chance to choose between two main characters.

A new feature that Ubisoft is bringing to Odyssey is the ability to choose your own character. Players will get to choose one of two main characters: Alexios or Kassandra. Whichever you choose, your character has the same story. They are a Spartan warrior in exile who becomes a mercenary during the war between Sparta and Athens. The player, playing as either Alexios or Kassandra, will have the ability to make several crucial choices throughout the game.

2. Dialogue Options

A new feature in Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey gives players dialogue options in nearly every conversation. Players can even verbally spar with Socrates!

Speaking of choices, players will now have access to dialogue options in nearly every conversation of Odyssey. These dialogue options can range from joking and lying to NPC’s, to crucial decisions that could turn the tide of the war. If a player makes too many dialogue choices that upset certain factions, they will send mercenaries to deal with the player. According to Ubisoft, they toyed with the idea of letting players know whether or not a certain line of dialogue will have an effect on the outcome of the game, but they ultimately decided it was more important for a player to make the decisions that they wanted to.

3. Romance

Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey is revolutionizing the series as a more in-depth RPG. Players will now have romance options, including same-sex romance.

As far as dialogue options go, players have always experienced romance in the Assassin’s Creed series as fixed and linear. However, according to Ubisoft, all of that is about to change. Players now have many different opportunities to romance a cast of diverse NPC’s throughout their own odyssey. For example, if a player opts to play as Kassandra, they are free to choose whether they romance a man or a woman, or no one at all. Players can also opt out of romancing options if they so choose. As Ubisoft describes it, Odyssey is all about the player’s individual journey.

4. Big Battles

In true Spartan fashion, players now have the option to lead armies of up to 150 soldiers into epic battles.

The map of Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey is incredibly expansive, covering a vast amount of the Greek islands. It stands to reason, then, the battles would be just as big. In Odyssey, players have the opportunity to lead up to 150 soldiers into battle. In these massive battles between the Spartans and Athenians, it is the player’s job to target the lieutenants of the opposing side needing to hack, slash, and dodge through waves of enemy soldiers to get to them.

The more lieutenants the player takes out, the more enemy soldiers begin to flee out of fear, so it’s imperative for players to take them out right away. However, the more lieutenants the player takes out, the more they will gain the attention of the captain, the battle’s penultimate boss. Once the player has killed the enemy captain and a significant amount of enemy soldiers, the battle is won. We cannot wait to play through this feature when it comes out!

5. Naval Combat

Naval combat is another feature that is returning from Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, giving players the option of fighting and boarding enemy ships.

Another combat feature that is making a huge comeback in an exciting way is naval combat. Introduced in Assassin’s Creed III, naval combat was the cornerstone of the game and will also play a significant role in Odyssey as well. The player will be commanding their very own Greek trireme that can be controlled by either rowing or sailing.

During a recent Reddit Ask Me Anything, Odyssey’s Creative Director, Jonathan Dumont, explained that this game’s naval combat will not include cannons, but will have more of a focus on cleaving and ramming other ships as well as eliminating an enemy’s ships with arrows and javelins. “There’s nothing better than to cleave an enemy ship in half and see her crew devoured by sharks,” he jokes. He also admits that there will be a progression system and ways for players to recruit their own crews. We are definitely eager to see this feature make a comeback in this game!

6. Mercenaries

Since the main character does not live by the Assassin’s Creed, players are free to lie, cheat, and steal. But be warned! If they get caught, they have the potential to be hunted by mercenaries.

A completely new feature that is being introduced in Odyssey is the mercenary system. Since this game is set around 400 years before the Assassins Brotherhood was founded with Bayek, the protagonist of Odyssey does not need to live by the Assassin’s Creed. Instead, players can choose to lie, cheat, steal and generally be a rapscallion. But be careful! If the player is caught doing any of these unreputable things, they could end up with a bounty on their head. If this happens, mercenaries will begin to seek out the player, who in turn will be notified of their location, their weapons, strengths, and weaknesses. Players have several options when it comes to dealing with mercenaries. They can either choose to kill them, pay the bounty on their head, or run. However, if a player chooses to kill the mercenary, another one may simply shift up the ranks and take the assassinated mercenary’s place.

This system is very reminiscent of the Nemesis system in Shadow of Mordor where enemies and their grudges are constantly evolving with the player. We are excited to see how this plays out!

7. Huge World

Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey allows players to explore a large portion of the Ancient Mediterranean islands.

According to Ubisoft, the world of Odyssey is their most expansive yet, covering quite a few of the Greek islands. However, the map is mostly made up of the Aegean Sea, which players can freely explore to find some unique goodies that Ubisoft has no doubt hidden around. Also, according to Creative Director Jonathan Dumont, the map will feature several different biomes. Players will be able to explore everything from snow-capped mountains to forests and beaches. Reportedly, the map is twice the size of Assassin’s Creed: Origins, which covered a hefty expanse of the Egyptian desert. There is no doubt there will be lots of places for us to explore in this game!

8. No Hidden Blade

Since Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey is set many years before the brotherhood is officially formed, players will not have access to the signature weapon of the franchise, the hidden blade. Instead, players will wield the broken spear of Leonidas.

Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey will be the first Assassin’s Creed game to not feature the hidden blade. Instead, the player will wield the broken spear of Leonidas, which functions as sort of a hidden blade in this game. According to the lore of the game, Alexios or Kassandra (whomever the player chooses to be) is the child of Leonidas, who is said to have First Civilization DNA. His spear is the game’s signature weapon and seems to possess some mystical powers. As prophesied by a Greek oracle, Leonidas’ family will bring a great doom to Sparta, which leads to the player getting thrown off of a mountain as a child and surviving, reappearing 17 years later as a mercenary. We are interested to see just what mystical powers the broken spear of Leonidas possesses!

9. Skills and Abilities

Players will be able to craft their own play style with Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey’s new skill tree.

According to Ubisoft, the skill tree in Odyssey will be quite similar to the previous game, Origins, with some minor tweaks. The skill tree will be divided up into the Hunter, Warrior, and Assassin branches, which will allow the player to craft their own play style by mixing and matching different perks.

As in Origins, the Hunter skill branch is focused around ranged attacks such as archery or commanding your eagle. The Warrior skill branch focuses more on melee attacks, allowing the player to unlock certain abilities that will improve this aspect of combat. A notable skill that the player can unlock in this skill branch is the famous Spartan kick, which launches enemies off of cliffs or away from the player. After all, this is Sparta!

The final skill branch is the Assassins skill, which focuses mostly on stealth attacks, allowing the player to craft a sneakier play style. It is interesting to note that some of the skills in this tree allow the player to use the Spear of Leonidas in a stealth-like way, similar to the hidden blade of previous Assassin’s Creed games. From the sounds of it, players will be able to craft their own kind of playstyle in this game, and we are excited to try it out!

10. Modern-Day Plot

The modern-day plot of Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey will pick up where Origins left off with Layla Hassan’s story.

As revealed at E3 2018, Layla Hassan’s story has not quite yet finished. Ubisoft was quick to tell us that in Odyssey, we will be delving further into her story. When we last saw her in Origins, she was headed to Alexandria with William Miles. Now that her partner from the Sigma Team has been captured, it will be interesting to see how she reacts with Miles and the Assassin Brotherhood, even though she is not a member herself.

While we do not know too much else about the modern-day plot of Odyssey, we do know Ubisoft has said there will be more room for exploration during the modern-day story segments. After complaints that they did not focus as much on the modern-day part of the story in past Assassin’s Creed games, Ubisoft has announced they will be allowing players more freedom to explore the modern-day story in-depth if they so choose. Players who prefer the historical plot can also choose to not delve fully into the modern day plot. It sounds like Ubisoft is cultivating a game that can be enjoyed by everyone and we cannot wait!

Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey will be available for purchase for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on October 5, 2018, giving players the chance to embark on their own Odyssey.

Top 5 Assassin's Creed Odyssey Best Armor And How To Get Them Early

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has made great strides in allowing players to customize their weapons and armor.

Aside from the base stats that each item has, Epic and Legendary gear also have slots available for an added boost in the form of Engravings. Unlike with the Legendary weapons though, the best Legendary armor engravings are not accessible without collecting the entire set.

Once you have completed tasks to gain the armor sets, you can move your newfound engraving onto other gear, giving you the freedom to pick the playing build that works best for your style. We’ve compiled a list below of the top five best armor sets in the game.

5. Artemis Armor Set, Pirate Armor Set, and Spartan War Hero Armor Set

Yes, these are three different sets of armor, but since they all offer the same perks in different skill trees, it seemed illogical to rank one above the other.

Artemis Armor Set

The Artemis Armor Set comes with the engraving for +15% damage with hunter abilities. These abilities might grant you a boost if you choose to snipe your foes or rain down a barrage of arrows.

The set can be obtained by completing all the Daughters of Artemis quests, which includes killing all the legendary animals in the game. These fights can be challenging, especially if you are under-leveled.

While it is possible to kill the beasts at a lower level, be prepared for many attempts that result in checkpoint restarts. When under-leveled, one decent hit from these animals can spell immediate death. For a guide to help you get this gear, click here.

Pirate Armor Set

The Pirate Armor Set has an engraving of +15% damage with Assassin abilities and can be obtained by killing all the Gods of the Aegean Sea Cultists.

Like the Legendary animals, these naval combats can be taxing, and finding all the clues to the identities of the cultists is time-consuming. Despite the work needed for this set, the engraving is perfect to stack in combination with the Artemis set or the Spartan War Hero set’s engraving.

Spartan War Hero Set

The Spartan War Hero Set provides a +15% damage with warrior abilities and can be obtained by killing all the Peloponnesian League Cultists.

This perk is another set that works well when stacked with other engraving perks and is useful for those who prefer up-close combat. Bashing in the skulls of your foes with heavy weapons with these perks activated is easy with quick, killing blows.

To kill all the cultists and get this gear, you must also find the clues to reveal the identities of the cultists which can be found in a guide here.

4. Greek Hero Armor Set

If you struggle to dodge away from attacks with poison or fire, the Greek Hero Armor Set is perfect for you. Its engraving provides a +20% to all resistances, making it easier to survive the effects of the attacks.

To get it, you must kill the following mercenaries with these titles in their name:

The Flash
The Frenzied
The Translucent
The Resplendent
The Lucky Drunk

The mercenaries are scattered around the map. This will require a strategic battle plan if you intend to go up against higher-level enemies. To find these opponents, investigate your Mercenary tab in your menu and select Track.

3. Arena Fighter’s Armor Set

The Arena Fighter’s Armor Set, +10% health with overpower abilities, may be a useful set for you to grab if you have acquired overpower abilities from the skill tree.

With a cooldown on Second Wind, the healing ability, using the perk from the engraving on this set could give you enough health to survive until your ability is ready again.

You can get this set by defeating all the opponents in the arena twice. The fights can be difficult, like those from the arena battles in Assassin’s Creed Origins, but they are possible to win with well-timed strikes and dodges.

2. Achilles Armor Set

In a tough boss fight, like with the Legendary animals or the mythical creatures like Medusa, health can be everything. With the Achilles Armor Set, 2% of your damage dealt to enemies is restored as health. This may seem miniscule, but when using high damage abilities like the Devastating Show from the Hunter skill tree, which can damage 10,000 or more depending on shot location, you could restore your low health in a few quick shots.

To get this armor, you must kill all the Heroes of the Cult Cultists. Like the other sets in this list, you will need to find the identities of all these members. A guide to aid you can be found here.

1. Athenian War Hero Set

Of the Legendary sets and engravings, the Athenian War Hero Set comes with an engraving perk that is one of the most useful in the game. The engraving allows all arrows to pierce shields. As many of the enemies you encounter will have shields, with some having large shields that block arrows easily, it's difficult to use your hunter abilities and keep your distance.

To rid your foes of their shields, you must acquire the Shield Breaker ability and draw close enough to use it. If multiple enemies are present, this could mean taking a beating while you try to disarm. Using the perk from this set will allow your arrows to piece those shields without drawing in close or wasting your adrenaline using Ghost of Artemis shots (a Hunter ability from your skill tree).

Runner Up: Demigod Armor Set

The engraving perk that comes with the Demigod Armor Set, +10% damage with all abilities, makes this set one of the best in the game.

Unfortunately, there is no way to get this armor without completing the main story line and thus, doesn’t qualify as something you can get early in the game. Still, this is a powerful perk, and would work well stacked—pairing well with the Artemis, Spartan, and Pirate sets to provide a +25% damage to all abilities if all are stacked together.

To get this set, you must loot the cultist Deimos at the end of the main story and get the final piece from the last Cult of Kosmos member.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has achieved impressive new things, and this isn’t limited to the basics of story and game mechanics.

Changes to the weapons and armor in the game help to compliment each player’s individual playing style. With the game brimming over with options, it may seem like it isn’t worth your time to go after some special Legendary gear.

However, thanks to the engraving system in the game, the hunt for special weapons is worth the time. All legendary weapons come equipped with their own special engraving, which can also apply to other weapons.

This opens a new realm of possibilities for players who may prefer quicker weapons like daggers but want to enjoy the Legendary perk that comes with a heavy blunt weapon or vice versa. Below is a list of the ten best weapons you can collect as you play your way through Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.

While ranked, keep in mind that each weapon could hold a higher place in the list depending upon your preference of gameplay.

10. Artemis' Bow

Artemis’ Bow comes equipped with the engraving for +20% damage using the Predator Shot ability. If you’re a stealth and hunter-based gamer who prefers tucking away and taking out enemies with controlled headshots, this is the bow for you. Should you prefer another bow with higher percentages in buffs, it’s an easy task to engrave a new bow with the perk from Artemis’s Bow, meaning you’re free to continue your powerful sniper-bow shots using the bow of your choice.

9. Hammer of Jason

The Hammer of Jason is a heavy blunt weapon that deals tremendous damage and comes with the engraving +20% Damage to Shield Breaker. This is beneficial in the earlier parts of the game where players are still trying to figure out their playing style or haven’t yet been able to get some higher skill perks and need a way around the enemies’ shields. From crushing skulls with the sheer force of this hammer to using your Shield Breaker ability to bash someone in the face, this weapon is a must for those who prefer combat over stealth.

8. Herakles' Mace

Another heavy blunt weapon, Herakles’ Mace has the face of lion carved into it. Like the Hammer of Jason, this weapon packs some serious power, but it’s the engraving that comes with it that is most valuable: +40% damage with bows when above your target. For stealth players who prefer utilizing their bow from rooftops or trees, this engraving is a powerful tool. Transferring the engraving takes only a simple trip to the blacksmith, and this perk can be applied to any other weapon in your arsenal, but it will be most useful on a bow.

7. Dagger of Kronus

The Dagger of Kronus is another weapon perfect for stealth. With an engraving of +40% damage when attacking from behind, this is the dagger you want equipped when you are trying to take down the brutes in the game with more health than the average archer or sword-bearer. Combine this dagger with a Critical Strike Assassination from your skill tree, and you may even take out Captains or Polemarches with ease.

How to Get It: This item takes work to get. You must advance the story until you find out about the cultists, then you’ll need to kill the entire “Eyes of Kosmos” line. Here is a video of to help.

6. Mallet of Everlasting Flame

The Mallet of Everlasting Flame is another heavy blunt object that packs a powerful punch. The engraving for this weapon is Fire Damage with All Attacks, meaning you’re free to bar-be-que your opponent as you’re bashing his face in.

How to Get It: You must defeat the mercenary with a name that ends in “The Smoldering.” This mercenary is a tough cookie. It may be necessary for you to level up before you come across her, or, if you’re lucky, you may be able to find a spot to snipe her from afar. Here is a video that will help.

5. Fanged Bow

If you’re looking for a way to maximize your DPS, finding weapons with buffs that add fire or poison damage is the way to go. Enter the Fanged Bow, a bow whose engraving turns every basic arrow into a poisoned arrow. If you’ve managed to get the Dagger of Kronus, you’ll also have the armor set that increases poison damage, which makes that armor combined with this bow a match made in venomous heaven.

How to Get It: You’ll find this item inside a chest at the Cave of Mt. Zas on Naxos Island. This video will help you find it.

4. Hades' Bow

Much like the Fanged Bow, Hades’ Bow helps you capitalize on your DPS with its engraving, with which all basic arrows become fire arrows. The damage over time combined with the Multi Shot ability can be helpful in areas like Conquest Battles that are enemy-heavy.

3. Arachne's Stingers

Like the Mallet of Everlasting Flame with flame, the engraving for Arachne’s Stingers turns weapon damage into poison damage. The Stingers are lightning-quick daggers that allow you to slice through your prey like a Hibachi chef. Combine the poison damage from these daggers with the fire damage from Hades’ Bow, and even the most difficult opponents will lick your boots.

How to Get It: This is a random drop from the mercenaries. The easiest way to attain this item is to get yourself a bounty and let the lambs come to you for their slaughter.

2. Gorgoneion Xiphos

The Gorgoneion Xiphos is a powerful weapon, but as with some other weapons on this list, the engraving is what makes this weapon valuable. While the engraving of Low Chance to Stun on Melee Hit may not seem a worthwhile prize, when applied to fast-moving weapons like daggers, your chance to stun your opponent increases. In cases like major boss fights, using this engraving and timing your dodges could make or break a battle.

How to Get It: Getting this weapon is no easy feat. Like the Dagger of Kronus, you must complete an entire branch of cultists, in this case, the Gods of the Aegean Sea. The Xiphos can be found on The Hydra, the sage of the branch. Here is a video of how to obtain it.

1. Pandora's Kopis

Pandora’s Kopis takes the number one spot on this list because of its unique ability. The engraving for the Kopis is +100% damage and +50% health for tamed beasts. The skill of taming beasts adds a unique factor to Assassin’s Creed gameplay, drawing somewhat on the idea behind World of Warcraft’s hunter class. Allowing your beast to “tank” while you shoot from afar is an effective way to plow through several people at once. The additional damage and health provided by the Kopis makes it an excellent addition to your inventory.
