Assassin’s Creed is one of the most iconic video games of all time; a series that inspired millions of kids around the globe to put on a random hoodie and start walking around with a pen strapped to their wrists, secured by a random rubber band. Not only that, but many of them are just damn good games!

With over 20 installments in the franchise, however, it is only natural that there are some stinkers. However, this also went on to show us that the best games in the series are so good that they can completely change the trajectory of the entire franchise. So, let’s take a look at the best games!

10. Assassin’s Creed - 2007 (PC, Playstation 3, Xbox 360)

The one that started it all. 2007’s Assassin’s Creed is the one that really took the entire stealth-action video game genre to the next level and definitely revolutionized the gaming industry. Altaïr was a great and super badass protagonist and he really showed everyone the game and how it works.

With a primary focus on stealth based gameplay and fluid movement throughout the city by way of parkour, it did really well to set the groundworks that the rest of the series followed. Though, if you play it now, it obviously doesn’t hold up as well due to it being a 2007 release. Despite that, however, it is still a classic for a reason!

I’ll be very clear here; this is not an Assassin’s Creed game. Ubisoft just really wanted to make an open world fantasy RPG so they slapped on the AC brand to make it sell more copies. I should also note that as a pure Assassin’s Creed game, this would be at the very bottom of the list because it has very little to do with the fundamentals of the series.

The stealth aspect literally feels like an afterthought as combat seems to favor direct engagements rather than the sneaky approach. However, other than that, this is far and away the most beautiful game Ubisoft has ever made, which is really saying something. Odyssey is vast and is the perfect game for those that love everything about Ancient Greece.

8. Assassin’s Creed Revelations - 2011 (PC, Playstation 3, Xbox 360)

Our third game with the legendary Ezio Auditore was the perfect way to say goodbye to this character whose life we saw progress in its entirety and is one of the reasons why he is unanimously regarded as one of the greatest video game protagonists ever written. We saw his growth from a brash young man to an aged legend of the Brotherhood at the end of his career.

The game takes place in a great and faithful recreation of Constantinople (modern day Istanbul) and is the best place to cap off Ezio’s story. The map is beautiful and very historically relevant, along with entirely new gameplay mechanics that, at this point of the story, were really great and would later go on to be staples of the series. Plus, you have a really cool new kind of hidden blade.

7. Assassin’s Creed Syndicate - 2015 (PC, Playstation 4, Xbox One, Stadia, Nintendo Switch)

AC Syndicate was the much anticipated follow up to the troubled launch of Unity and was also one that many fans were eagerly anticipating. This is because London was a setting that players had been asking for many years at this point for a number of reasons; namely the aesthetics and the fact that it served as the perfect AC setting.

While it is far from a perfect game and has a number of problems, it is still a great time you can have. The story and characters are far more light hearted than most other games in the series, which some may like and others might not, but London is absolutely gorgeous and faithfully recreated and there are so many things to do and secrets to uncover that you will have a great time doing it. This is also the only game in the series that features 2 different characters with their own strengths and weaknesses so each mission feels fresh and entertaining.

6. Assassin’s Creed 3 - 2012 (PC, Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U)

Assassin’s Creed 3 was the final game that concluded the overarching modern day apocalypse arc and was also the final game where we get to play as fan favorite modern day character, Desmond Miles. While this game was initially met with a fair bit of criticism, it has proved itself to be one that has aged considerably well and it feels just the same to play it today as it did back in 2012.

AC3 has us playing as Conor Kenway; the tallest, broadest and most physically imposing of all the assassins that we see in the entire franchise. He is an absolute force to be reckoned with and he is an absolute tank with the best assassin robes out of everyone that we see in these games. Though this game is one that is slow to begin, it is a really great time.

As Conor, we fight the Templars in Colonial America and get revenge on those who have wronged us, all set in a brilliant recreation of the United States.

5. Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood - 2010 (PC, Playstation 3, Xbox 360)

Brotherhood was the second game with Ezio as the protagonist and it saw him further along in his quest to restore the Assassin Brotherhood, while at the same time following through with his quest to get revenge on his family's enemies, the Borgias.

It saw Ezio move on from his home to Rome and while the story itself wasn’t as memorable as that of AC2, the rest of the game is nothing short of a masterpiece, with hundreds of things to do and secrets to uncover. Even the eternal city of Rome was absolutely incredible and is one of the best settings in the series.

4. Assassin’s Creed Origins - 2017 (PC, Playstation 4, Xbox One, Stadia)

Origins was the first of the RPG Assassin’s Creed games and is by far the best out of all of them. This is because while it was the first to introduce RPG mechanics to the series, it never forgets its identity as an AC game. The mystery and grounded-in-reality allure of the series is in full swing in Origins.

Set in one of the best worlds that Ubisoft has ever made, Ancient Egypt is a faithful and great place that shows that when they actually try, Ubisoft can make truly legendary worlds. All this is topped off with Bayek, arguably the best protagonist in the franchise and the one with the best performance out of all of them. A must try for all fans of the series.

3. Assassin’s Creed Unity - 2014 (PC, Playstation 4, Xbox One, Stadia)

This is a pick that I might get some hate for. When Unity launched back in 2014, it was a bug ridden mess that honestly brought down the entire experience a lot for the players. It was lauded as the next revolutionary game in the series in terms of the gameplay, so naturally it garnered a ton of excitement amongst the fandom, but was unfortunately too buggy initially.

However, Unity is now the game that holds up better than any other in the franchise after all the technical problems have been fixed. It is still absolutely gorgeous and by far the most fluid and compelling in terms of movement, animation and action.

Arno is also the most stealthy and deadly assassin in the entire series and in this game, a lot of focus is put on the secretive nature of the Assassins and the stealth that they exercise. Due to this, this is the most true AC game in the franchise and the one that sticks to the identity of the franchise the best.

Choose Unity if you like:

2. Assassin’s Creed 2 - 2009 (PC, Playstation 3, Xbox 360)

Yet another controversial pick! Assassin’s Creed 2 was really the game that put this series on the map and made it a staple and iconic franchise of the industry. It was the game that introduced us to Ezio, one of the greatest characters ever made. This game had everything; from a bustling city, incredible story, characters, secrets and so much more left to uncover.

Most fans of the series tend to put this at the very top of the list and it is very easy to see why. It is honestly a toss up between the top 2 games in the series and AC2 can definitely take it. The reason it isn’t at the top of the list for me is because it doesn’t hold up as well as it once did back in 2009.

Ezio is a character that feels like a good friend, and running around on the streets of Venice and Florence in this game makes us spend time with him and get to know him, etching this game experience into our minds forever.

1. Assassin’s Creed Black Flag - 2013 (PC, Playstation 3, Xbox 360)

Black Flag is the best Assassin’s Creed game for reasons that may not be very easy to understand for outsiders to the franchise. All these games are very immersive, but Flag Black takes that to a level not seen before or since, in that it actually feels like a home away from home. It is just very odd to explain.

Black Flag took the moment to moment gameplay of AC3 and refined it incredibly well, due to which it also further added many things that are now main stays for the franchise. The ship combat was greatly expanded upon and was made into one of the main parts of the game and was just the most fun thing ever, allowing every player to live out their childhood pirate fantasies!

But despite all the new features and the amazing gameplay and the breathtaking locations, Black Flag excelled most in its characters and stories. Edward starts off as a greedy pirate only looking out for himself, eventually becoming an Assassin and never losing his humor or charm, making him stand shoulder to shoulder with Bayek and Ezio as the best characters in the series.

The supporting characters and main story were all just as amazing, with Black Flag delivering one of the most heart wrenching and beautiful endings I have ever seen in a video game.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is set during the Industrial Revolution that follows twin assassins Jacob and Evie Frye as they rescue London from the evil Templars who rule over all of society. The story is entertaining enough to learn on its own, but Syndicate takes a surprising turn and doesn't rush you down that path. After completing an initial series of plot objectives, you're free to wander about London at your leisure, with no invisible barriers in your way. Syndicate has gangs formed up at various character levels all across the city. A direct assault to your assassin, usually means an increase in difficulty, cheap equipment and little upgrades at the outset.

There is no easy difficulty setting in Syndicate.

The difficulties are graded on a scale of one to three stars: one for regular, two for severe, and three for insane difficulty. A single star would be regarded as average or normal play difficulty.

The game's maximum level is 10, and players must spend 18 skill points to get from level 9 to the maximum level. Leveling is a process that takes time.

Two Star Difficulty:

The difficulty in skill is vamped to give you a much more filling experience.

This difficulty set is set to the most insane level, it is known as to really bring on a challenge and have you engaged for quite some time before the actual completion of the game depending on how well your skills are. You can expect to be challenged on your skills, combat and strategic abilities in navigating through alleyways of London as you take on the greatest number of enemies which will require a high level of strategic gameplay skill. The difficulty is aimed at pro gamers who enjoy challenging themselves.

Finally, select a level of difficulty by selecting the three-star difficulty.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey Review-Read Before You Buy

I’m no stranger to open worlds, having played games like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Skyrim, and Assassin’s Creed Origins, so when news broke about the changes coming to the newest game in the AC franchise, my interests escalated. As a long-time fan of immersive open world games, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey had to be more than a big map. For me, it also needed to pull me into that era of history and make me live it. With big promises come big responsibilities.

About Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is a stealth, open world, action RPG. It is the first in the series to apply the choices and consequences of a true RPG in its storytelling like games such as Fable or The Witcher 3. Stealth games allow players to stalk their prey from the shadows and in some games, also offers a non-lethal option. Open world games give players massive worlds to explore, and role-playing games offer a compelling story which can be shaped by player choice.

After three years in development, the game was released on October 5, 2018. The game has garnered a lot of attention since its official announcement at this year’s E3, with many long-time fans curious about changes. Others commented on the disparity between Ubisoft’s recent statement about yearly AC games and the release date of Odyssey falling only a year after that of Origins. While it’s difficult to know for sure if Ubisoft is going back to making yearly Assassin’s Creed games, the popularity of the released game has been high and will remain a popular choice as players await upcoming DLC.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Story

Not going to lie, I yelled "This is Sparta" anyways.

Set in 431 BCE during the Peloponnesian War, players can choose between two main characters: a male, Alexios or female, Kassandra. Whether male or female, the player begins the story on the Isle of Kephallonia as a mercenary. The character’s main story focuses on finding out information about the player’s family and is accompanied by interjections of historical events and people. Outside the Animus in the present day, you play as Layla Hassan, a former Abstergo employee looking for answers since witnessing the birth of the Assassin Order in Origins.

The story is compelling. You begin in a short scene as Leonidas fighting the Persians alongside his faithful 300, ramming your spear through your opponents with ease. In fact, the only disappointing aspect of this portion of the intro was that your Spartan Kick ability didn’t come with a gratifying yell of “THIS IS SPARTA!” As you progress through the game, the story becomes more emotional and intriguing as your character discovers new information relating to their family. Another difference to this entry in the franchise is the addition of mythological creatures available to battle. While Origins had a similar idea, it was limited to a glitch in the Animus while these encounters appear more real and are factored into the game’s quest line.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Gameplay

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has two, pre-made characters, Kassandra or Alexios. The gameplay is customizable based upon your play style. Like in Origins, there is a skill chart that allows players to choose which skill sets they would like to gain or increase as they level their characters. Many players who have played Origins will notice that significant changes were made to the weapons and the skill tree. For example, you need only one bow for multiple kinds of shots. The skill tree provides players with the customization to level the skills they use most in either the Hunter (Archery), Warrior (Combat), or Assassin (Stealth) trees.

Action, including naval combat, is seamless within the game. Dodges and parries are useful, and certain skills, like Shield Breaker, give fluidity to combat. Unlike in other AC games, which will desynchronize if you kill a citizen, your character is free to raid fortresses and slaughter the innocent at will, but likens will trigger a bounty to be placed upon your character and other mercenaries will hunt you. The system is similar to that of the Phylakes from Origins and the star ratings in GTA. Fighting these mercenaries along with taking part in conquest battles are an excellent way to earn Epic or Legendary gear.

The map size of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is immense. Along with the vast amount of land that each individual city-state of Greece contains, there is a large expanse of ocean to travel and explore as well. Through exploration, players can find quests that will not appear on the in-game notice board and receive free experience for discovering historical sites.

In each area, there are multiple opportunities to loot. Whether it is grabbing drachmae from woven baskets, snatching a weapon off a rack in a fortress, or pilfering goods from a supply cache, your inventory will fill often. However, the game will give you a few options to decrease the inventory clutter. You can deconstruct or sell weapons and armor, and a convenient “sell all” button rids you of other useless items. (I should note that Legendary gear and gear bought from the store with Helix Credits or gotten by trading U Play Points cannot be destroyed.) All of this combined with quests and the gains from sinking ships in naval combat allow for a steady flow of income.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Quest System

Somehow, I couldn’t help feeling sorry for the poor husband in this quest.

In Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, responses and outcomes are engaging but can be lacking, and most consequences in the game are merely cosmetic, resulting in a missed opportunity for the developers. Quests in the game begin like most RPG’s. It introduces your character, you speak with a secondary character, and then you travel to a different location to either: Talk to another person, collect something, or kill someone. The side story missions follow the same pattern.

Ubisoft discussed their expectations regarding adding choice to the gameplay in hopes it would renew interest in side quests, and to some extent, it has. One side quest sends you looking for the ingredients of a love potion for an elderly woman. When you return, you can give her the ingredients and walk away, or you can take pity on her husband and “satisfy her needs.” In another mission, you must infiltrate the home of a character, and you are instructed to do so with tact. If you use violence to push your way through the area, you will later see the character being tortured. It adds a heightened sense of importance to specific aspects of the game, which increase the fun and the replay value.

Unfortunately, Ubisoft failed on delivering side quests that were more interesting to play. Some may have interesting or funny outcomes, but most are monotonous and skipped over by players not looking to play for 100% completion.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Developer

Ubisoft Montreal was the main developing team working on Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. With Odyssey being the eleventh entry in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, the games have come a long way in both graphics and game mechanics since the first Assassin’s Creed debuted in November 2007. In the past, the company’s push to create games on a short time frame has delivered games riddled with glitches, and Odyssey is no different. One such glitch stops the spawning of mercenaries even with a full bounty. Another glitch occurs during combat where multiple enemies are present. If you alert one or more enemies, the game will lag, displaying chopped audio and frames. This glitch can cease on its own if the player gets out of combat and waits until it stops, but in my experience, I have had to reboot my PS4 and the game. A restart in the middle of taking a large fort or any mission is a major frustration for all gamers, and I hope that a patch can amend these in the future. You can find a list of known glitches and potential fixes here. Since release, Ubisoft has done stability patches and will continue to do so as more glitches are reported.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Price

The standard version of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey cost $59.99 US, with Deluxe Edition coming in at $79.99 and Gold Edition at $109.99. There is also the Ultimate Edition for $119.99. As with all deluxe or upgraded editions of games, Odyssey Deluxe offers a few incentives such as boosts, gear and a special mission. Gold Edition offers benefits that the Deluxe does, plus an extra mission and a Season Pass to all upcoming DLC. (This is a worthwhile purchase considering that the re-mastered version of Assassin’s Creed III is to be one of the upcoming DLC available for Odyssey.) Ultimate Edition provides all the above plus additional boosts and gear.

The game is available to players on PS4, Xbox One, and the PC-- with rumors that there may be a potential port to the Nintendo Switch. There is no pay to win element in Odyssey but there are in-game purchases. The Online Store offers experience and drachmae boosts which can be limited time or permanent. Other purchase options are skins for your horse, ship and crew, and an array of Epic or Legendary weapons and armor. To purchase these items, you must buy Helix Credits, which come in packages of 500 for $4.99, 1050 for $9.99, 2400 for $19.99, 4600 for $34.99 or 7400 for $49.99. Most of the purchases in the online store vary in cost between 200 Helix Credits and 2000.

Final Verdict

8.5/10

Pros:

The story is interesting and draws on some of history’s unique battles and characters.
The map is massive- tons of exploration and sites to see.
Graphics are beautiful, which makes it that much easier to appreciate the beauty of the monuments and temples.
Choices and consequences add a heightened level of urgency and stress to the gameplay, which otherwise could become boring by hiding in a bush waiting to stab someone.
The option of choosing a male or female character is a great addition.
Buying the Gold Edition allows for you to save money on all future DLC, including the eventual re-mastered version of Assassin’s Creed III.
Updates to the skill tree from Origins have benefitted gameplay mechanics, with players who enjoy using bows and not desiring to swap between three different types.
Naval Combat is seamless and engaging.

Cons:

Side quests have improved little. They’re still rather monotonous.
The game can have glitches and lagging difficulties, sometimes requiring an entire reboot.
Legendary items cannot be dismantled, nor can items purchased from the store. It clutters up the inventory.
Conquest battles can be fun, but for players that prefer stealth over combat, they can be a challenge.

The second outfit that Ezio gets on his journey.

Probably the most iconic Ezio outfit. We first see it in “Brotherhood” but it has made several other appearances in the later games as a DLC or special item that you can purchase in the Ubisoft store. What is most notable about this costume is that the front is longer than the previous outfit that Ezio wore. This is a whiter version of the previous costume that Ezio wore and the red parts are all centered around the waist. The oldest outfit in the game chronologically speaking. You could really see the beginnings of the Assassin’s Creed order here. The design of this outfit is rudimental and yet stylish. Most of this costume is inspired by Ancient Egypt. You can see this in the shoulders, the scarf like a hood, which you can take out if you like, and of course, we can’t forget about those sandals. This is the final outfit that we see Ezio wear in the conclusion to his story.

An Ezio outfit that isn’t white. It sure is a surprise. But a welcomed one at that. In the game, Ezio travels from Italy to Istanbul, and he changes his outfit before taking on the journey so he can more easily fit in this new setting. You can clearly see the Ottoman inspired pattern on this costume. The color is dark blue with a splash of white here and there. Another thing that is different is that there isn’t a cape on this costume. Instead, it is replaced by a fur shoulder pad and fur underlining on the inside of the costume. The freedom to drive or operate any transportation is the same. It goes without say how Black Flag is similar to GTA. You’re still taking someone’s ride, even if it is a boat.

Both worlds are large, and it takes a while to travel anywhere. Both worlds are free for the Player to go anywhere they please.

The game let’s players live in the chaos street shooting side of the virtual world. In both GTA Online and APB, a team must work together to complete the various missions in the game. For example, in a Mission called “Only a Game”, the Enforcers must protect a file from being taken by the Criminals. Most of the time in free roam, other Players will attempt a little chaos and try to kill your character.

You play as an agent for the Division, a secret military agency that is called upon when the nation is in crisis. It is up to you and your team (if you desire to have one) to find the cure for the virus that has completely decimated New York City.

The similarities between The Division and GTA Online are the options to have teammates and then get into shootouts. In Division, there is a place called the Dark Zone. It is a place where there are no rules, and you might be outnumbered and outgunned by rogue agents who have more weapons and skills than you.

GTA Online is just one big Dark Zone. You might come across a friendly Player, but most likely, they are there to kill you and steal your stuff.

5) Saints Row IV

Perhaps the likeness between this and GTA is similar in the regards of causing mayhem on the streets and stealing rides. They put in a challenge to steal police cars or Alien Spacecraft. Another likeness in both games also encourages the Player to have sex with anyone they choose.

There is also a similarity in the weapon selection interface, which mimics the weapon wheel design in GTA.

Watch Dogs 1 and 2 have followed and even had the exact likeness to GTA, with the exceptions of hacking and sexual innuendo. The player’s combat style, weapon selection, dialogues between NPC’s, stealing cars, and much more are similar to GTA.

GTA and the Watch Dogs series have the same spawning concept throughout the city when you die or get arrested. Spawning points are the nearest hospitals and Police stations. The consequences of dying and getting arrested are the same for both games. Both spawning locations will take your money, but a Police Station will also take away your ammunition.

What the game lacks in free roaming, it gains in creativity. Splinter Cell is a linear game, but there is freedom on how the Player can choose to achieve the mission. These same similarities can be found with some GTA missions and side missions, they can choose to deal with them guns blazing or stealthily.

GTA and Blacklist share many possible likenesses, one of them is the famous weapon wheel we’ve seen in Watch Dogs and Saints Row. Their items are even categorized similar to GTA. In Blacklist, the developers wanted to make it different, by dividing the wheel between non-lethal and lethal weapons and gadgets.

The likeness of this story’s intro is much like many GTA’s intros of their characters. Something brings them back into action and rekindles their passion for their job. In GTA V, Michael doesn’t want to be a crook anymore, he becomes nobody to his family and his job, until Trevor comes back and brings him back into a life of crime.

In this game Snake is incapacitated in a foreign hospital without a name, he’s a practically nobody in that country. Eventually, someone finds out and brings him back into the military life. These two characters needed someone on the outside to bring them back as legends.

1) Sleeping Dogs

An undercover agent, Wei Shen goes deep inside the Triads to take down the organization from within. Participate in illegal activities and gain the gang’s trust until you can gather enough evidence.

Much like most things on this list, this is the closest to GTA one can get, without copying them in every stroke. Do whatever it takes to achieve your objective, by whatever means necessary. In the game you can pick a fight with almost anyone, much like in GTA. The difference is that Wei knows more hand to hand combat than Trevor.

While in free mode, you can go chaotic if you so wish. Take cars and bikes and run amok, get dressed in whatever fashion you desire. Have any weapon in your arsenal.

The dialogue between NPC’s and the Player are similar. If you die, you spawn at the nearest hospital. To the cops, you’re just another crook that they need to stop.

I like civilized society. I really do. But now and then it can become so frustratingly dull. As the ultimate bad-boys, the killers from these games provide the best harmless taste of action, stealth and strategy so scarcely found in grocery lines. So buckle up for the best assassin games that you can play to become the ultimate killing machine, without all those pesky moral questions.

1. Dishonored (2012)

Grab your steam-powered gadgets, your freaky tattooed hand and an impractical but cool-looking mask, for this is Dunwall, and there is a lot of killing to be done! A disgraced bodyguard turned assassin, Corvo Attano is going to carve a bloody path towards redemption!

MUWAHAHAHAHA!... Uh, I mean, redemption. Yes, for redemption.

Featuring an engaging mix and match of magic, swords and steampunk, Dishonored lets you choose how to approach the action. Are you going to be merciful and just sneakily avoid detection, or do you have a penchant for murdering everything that moves, and then striking the corpses for good measure?

So I sneak past here and… Oh who am I kidding, they’re all gonna die.

But this is not one of those games where no matter if you went full psychotic or you talked your way out of it, everyone just seems supercool about it the next cutscene. No, Dishonored actually reacts to your choices, and even randomizes some portions of the game. So you have a different experience every time. Critically acclaimed for its design and style, you’ll always find a way to be sadistically creative. So have fun in your dystopia, kids.

2. Dishonored 2 (2016)

Bigger, better and closer to the sea, for some reason, Dishonored 2 ups the ante… twice I guess? We have two playable characters now, is what I’m saying. You can control either Corvo or the Empress in this expected sequel. And it looks so glorious, even your victims will be impressed.

*Blurghraaagh* (Translation: “Such finesse”).

Returning from the first game is everything you liked: choices, magic, steampunk, blood, nasty looking people. This time around though, not only can you choose a new character, but the upgrade system has been revamped to allow for character growth and deadlier combos and tactics.

I’m not even sure what’s happening right now, but I love it.

With a new game engine, narrative scenes that can be interrupted, stunning visuals and lots of expectations, Dishonored 2 looks like it’s one awesome promise that will soon come true. Fingers crossed.

So, you prefer your assassination contracts a little more gritty and realistic. You know, no magic but lots of chloroform and guns? Well, this is one game you should definitely check out. Named after a chess move but with definitely with more corpses, Alekhine’s Gun places you in control of Soviet agent Alekhine during the Cold War, a job that involves lots of “eliminating”.

His previous gig as an art critic didn’t work out.

You’re given a file with your targets and objectives, and then quite literally let loose in a certain location. After that, it’s all your decision. You will be judged, of course, and given an appropriate rank for how loud, violent, accurate and professional you were, but it’s not as if it’s gonna prevent you from getting another contract next level. So go nuts if you like.

99 random guys on the scene, 99 random guys! Take one down and hide it around, 98 random guys!

Allowing for meticulous planning or just winging it as you go, this game will have you replaying the levels and experiencing them in a lot of different ways, as you try and sometimes hilariously fail to execute your master plan. Good luck.

4. Hitman: Absolution (2013)

Legendary Agent 47 comes back in this 2013 installment. Tasked with killing his former ICA (International Contracts Agency) handler, Diana Burnwood, he will uncover a conspiracy that will take him to exotic locations while protecting a girl from killer nuns in latex outfits.

I’m not kidding. No wonder he wants absolution.

Without much room to impact the story with different actions or exploring big areas, it can be said that it has a slightly more linear approach to missions. After all, you have to go from point A to point B, and there’s not much room for going anywhere else. But it’s still close to the Hitman games you love and replay. This time around, you must use your Instincts (a literal power-up that lets you highlight important stuff) to navigate and kill your targets. You can do so with a bullet to the head or staging an accident, hiding corpses or avoiding detection whatsoever. Your choice.

Is it getting too packed? Oh right, you’re dead. Never mind.

And if you get bored with that, you can always enter the Contracts portion of the game, where you can design and play different user-made missions. A never-ending sneaky blood bath.

5. HITMAN (2016)

Before you even knew he had gone away, Agent 47 returns in this episodic game with a desire to travel, see the sights and shape the world through assassination. A hopeless romantic, I’d say.

That’s why all the red, obviously.

This installment, titled only Hitman, has been launching episodes all through 2016, with an upcoming one on January 2017. Each entry takes us to different and exotic locations around the globe. With a simplified Instincts mechanic, no more linear (i.e., no more limited exploration) and huge levels, this game tries to take everything that worked in Blood Money and mix it with Absolution ideas, giving it an overall different (and arguably better) feel than its predecessor.

Even with a helicopter besides him, not even his tie looks out of control.

With sandbox levels where to plan and kill in creative and unexpected ways, you’ll be quite happy that Agent 47 still looks good in that Italian suit of his, for you’ll be controlling him for quite a while.

6. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (2013)

You take the role of a new employee at a gaming studio in Montreal. No, not Ubisoft Montreal, it’s called Abstergo Entertainment. It’s obviously different. Here you are paid to relive the life and experiences of some guy using some high tech software. Fortunately, that guy is a sword fighting, parkour master, rum-loving pirate named Edward Kenway, who uncovers an ancient and dangerous conspiracy, stumbling right in the middle of the Assassins versus Templars conflict. All while visiting the wonderful Cuban archipelago and diving once or twice in its crystal blue waters.

Best job ever.

This game mixes everything you loved from the original gameplay mechanics, like the hidden blade stealth assassinations and the aforementioned parkour, with high-seas ship to ship combat and plunder. Never had high-sea piracy and singing sea shanties been so fun before.

What do you do with a drunken sailor early in the mooorning! Ugh, can’t get it out of my head.

So get ready to a swashbuckling adventure with action, stealth, and salty water, for Black Flag is a revitalizing and amazing game to check out even if you’re not familiar with the series.

7. Assassin's Creed: Revelations (2011)

So, you star Desmond Miles yet again, who is… in a coma. Oh, ok. But to exit such state, he must relive Ezio’s and Altaïr’s memories once more, as we explore Constantinople’s captivating architecture and streets.

I really don’t know how to stop, so I’ll just land on your skull. Deal?

Replacing the hidden blade (*gasp*, how dare they?) you’ve got the hookblade, which is more useful in traversing ropes through the city, making the pace faster and different from previous installments. You must also capture districts, like in Brotherhood, by eliminating the enemy presence and claiming that part of the city as your own (and thus accessing their stores and more). But now you have to defend them too with a sort of tower defense minigame. So a lot of games packed in one.

Chin up, son! *splargh* Oops.

The game features an addicting multiplayer that makes you feel paranoid in an exhilarating manner. Why you ask? Because you are both an assassin and a target, so you have to kill without alerting your mark, and also avoid being assassinated by another player. You also have all the usual goodies, such as collectibles, freaky clues about ancient conspiracies, upgrades, weapons, viewpoints, etc. Even if it might be a little more of the same ol’ Ezio, it is a game worth checking out if you’re a fan. And even if you aren’t, too.

8. Assassin's Creed Rogue (2015)

Themes: Assassin going rogue, historical conspiracy

Among all these killers, how to determine who’s the best? What about murdering a dedicated assassin’s order that has existed for centuries? What about going… rogue? If that’s your cup of tea, then this game is for you, as Shay decimates his former colleagues both on land and on the icy sea.

If I had another blade, I’d be holding it with my mouth.

With a revamped ship combat and your usual building climbing, sword and gun fights, this game follows closely the footsteps of previous entries in the series. Your allegiance impacts the enemies, though, as you now must intercept assassins and prevent them from… well, assassinating.

Even sailing is violent and involves breaking stuff

The 7th major installment of the series, although the mechanics may seem too similar to Black Flag, the change of allegiances brings a refreshing twist to the plot, with treason and danger at every corner.

9. Shadwen (2016)

In Shadwen, you take the role of, well, Shadwen. The plot is simple enough: You have to take care of a young girl Lily, while trying to assassinate your target. Pretty standard, huh? But you won’t settle for anything less than a king. Because you’re hardcore like that. So ask yourself: Do you like medieval settings? Do you hate having to replay a stealth level ‘cause you didn’t see that moron just standing there who gave off the alarm? ,You won’t have more troubles, as you strive to fulfill all of Shadwen’s kingslayer fantasies with total control of time and tactics.

Are any of you a king? No? You’ll die anyway. *Grin*.

The game has a rather unique mechanic, where time doesn’t pass if you don’t move. As such, you can plan and outmaneuver your enemies with carefully detailed tactics, as you rope swing from building to building and use clever gadgets and pointy blades. And even if you mess up, you can pull a Sands of Time move and turn back time a couple seconds and just try again. Nifty, huh?

Alternatively, you can just kill the same guy over and over again. Whatever floats your boat, you maniac.

With a free demo and an interesting gameplay, it doesn’t hurt to check this title out. What does hurt is when the guards catch you and kill you without mercy. So be on the lookout for that.

10. Mark of the Ninja (2012)

So, you’re a ninja on his day off. But ninjas don’t have days off, do they? That’s what you find when some soldiers burst in, gunning down everyone in sight. How do you balance the odds, you ask? By applying a killer tattoo, the aforementioned Mark of the Ninja. Killer as in it’ll kill you and/or make you mad. But let’s not dwell on that: the tattoo gives you superpowers!

Stabby superpowers!

In this 2D stealth platformer, you take the role of the only hope for your ninja clan (games have taught me that ninja clans are prone to dying out), as you take on soldiers with guns and dogs with rabies. But it’s still a risky endeavor. You must use the environment to your advantage, sticking to the shadows,creating opportunities, and using your superhuman reflexes to stay alive. You can even hang the corpses of your enemies to terrify them, as they don’t know who is out there killing their buddies, and distract them while you either run away or kill the unsuspecting victim.

And not so hidden vents. IT’S RIGHT THERE, MORON.

With upgrades that make you faster and more agile, imaginative stages with destructible light sources and lots of places to hide (like vents, shadow corners and the like), an interesting plot and a distinctive visual style, this is one little gem that not only measures up to any other stealth game, but sets the bar higher.

11. Sniper Elite 4 (2017)

Relying on stealth, planning and aim, Sniper Elite 4 is a game for those who like to be patient and precise, for it gives you a chance to control sniper Karl Fairburne as he helps the Italian resistance against those pesky World War II fascists.

Die, you fascist but punctual train!

The gameplay is quite similar to previous games, where you need to use the terrain to your advantage in order to get in the perfect position. What’s the perfect position? Ideally where all enemies (officers and privates alike) can’t see you, but you can see each and every one of them, putting bullets through their skulls without them knowing where they’re coming from. With larger maps than previous installments, an improved AI and the fan-favorite x-ray cam that activates when your kill is awesome enough, Sniper Elite promises to be a tactical and violently satisfying game.

I don’t know if I’m killing him or making him pass out with my dirty glove.

I know, I know. 2017 is not 2016. You know what? I don’t care. This game’s awesome. Why, you ask? Because it shows you that there’s a certain finesse to long range killing too. And better if you can see what happens to an eyeball when impacted by a high caliber bullet.

The system now includes shrapnel and melee kills for the x-ray cam, so if you’ve ever wondered exactly what your knife is doing inside your enemy’s heart, you’ll be satisfied with this game. Expecting to sell more than 200,000 physical copies in the UK alone, this is one game to be on the lookout for.

You like the idea of a sniper, but history lessons are not your thing? Well, jump into the boots of a modern sniper, deployed in the middle of an Eastern European conflict where warring factions collide. And you can even use drones. Cool, right?

Fly my pretty, fly!

With the help of different gadgets (such as the aforementioned scouting drone) you will traverse open world levels that let you approach your objectives in several ways. Gather intel, position yourself for precise sniping, or just try to blow everything up before you are killed. You will find you can even do a little parkour to help you clear objectives.

No clue why everyone leaves iridescent footprints, though. Doesn’t seem healthy.

Obviously if the game is called “Sniper” it will have snipers, but this time around, you can actually upgrade and customize your weapons, with each part being assembled at the end into one lethal instrument. You’ll also have knives, handguns and machineguns, if you ever get tired with sniping. Even your drone has the possibility of being repaired, upgraded or retrofitted in order to accomplish certain specific tasks. So, lots of choices, people.

With the game’s creative director being an actual military veteran, and with an expanded budget compared to its predecessors, expect it to be quite intense.

13. Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China

Theme: Parkour assassins in historical settings

As the last of the Chinese Assassins, you must murder the hell out of those who have wronged you, and teach them why it is a bad idea to mess with a professional and ancient order of parkour master killers.

Take that, gravity!

In this 2D side scroller with 3D elements, you must traverse the stages with the familiar moves of the series, all while mixing and matching combat, stealth and platforming. No major plot innovations here, but the gripping gameplay and stylish visuals make for an enjoyable game that will keep you entertained.

That’s not very zen of you, attacking from behind.

As part of a series of smaller games, China gives us a refreshing change of pace in the franchise, while still retaining the feel and story of the main titles. All in all, a great little game to check out.

14. Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Blacklist (2013)

So, you’re just chilling out when terrorists suddenly blacklist (eh? get it?) the U.S. for deploying their troops in foreign soil. But this time you are Sam Fisher, and you just happen to have an entire counter-terrorist organization at your disposal. So you just go counter-terrorizing them.

Depicted: good mannered counter-terrorism

Using a mixture of traditional stealth elements and action-oriented abilities such as quick hand to hand combat and automatic precision shooting. So you can avoid detection, silently murder everyone, or LOUDLY murder everyone with explosives, night vision goggles and drones. You can even tag and kill targets with precision while you run like a lunatic. Your choice, really.

Is it just me or do our protagonists spend too much time grabbing ledges?

Although initially criticized for the change in voice actors, Blacklist was positively received, and remains as a fun installment in this stellar franchise.

15. Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction (2010)

Themes: Espionage, modern-day weapons

Blacklist’s predecessor, Conviction places you in the shoes of grief-stricken Sam Fisher as he aggressively investigates the hit and run death of his daughter, killing everyone who isn’t cooperative enough.

That’s one bossy building.

Marked by a more aggressive take on stealth than its predecessors, it is easier to fend off various enemies while still clinging to the shadows and usual sneaking around. This is also the debut of the mark and shoot mechanic, which lets you feel you have ungodly good aim as you gun down various enemies at the same time.

And if you run out of ammo, there’s always your boot.

With the co-op campaign back, it is a great game to jump in with a buddy. A trustworthy one, though, or else it becomes frustrating. But all in all, a fun action-focused take on an old classic.

16. Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (2014)

You are in command of the legendary Snake a.k.a. Big Boss himself, who is tasked with infiltrating a secret American prison on Cuban soil, and spring a couple dudes from a paramilitary organization. You know the drill.

I mean, rockets and missiles in Cuba? When has that ever gone wrong?

Stealth is the name of the game (or at least a subtitle or something), as it has been in all the previous installments. This time, though, there is no alert status or gauge to tell you if someone is looking at you, and now you must learn to use the audio and visual cues for a more immersive experience, for you actually have to pay attention to your surroundings and not rely on a HUD. Also, if someone sees you, time slows for a second to allow you to react in time, before that loud-mouthed guard blows your cover.

Flashlights and average eyesight! My one weakness!

A comparatively small game, it introduces new mechanics and brings back the old favorites such as silent weapons, stealth takedowns, complex politically and philosophically charged plot, and boxes. An amazing prologue and a fun challenge, it is priced accordingly and therefore is a great game to buy.

17. Metal Gear Solid 5 The Phantom Pain

You have fallen into a coma (dude, you should really stop doing that), and when you wake up, it’s time to do some sneaky business, albeit with a missing arm. Taking control of Big Boss a.k.a. Venomous Snake, you join the cutely name Diamond Dogs mercenary group to track down the men responsible of killing your previous group. All this during the Angolan Civil War.

And yes, that’s a Diamond Dog dog. Awesome.

The gameplay remains largely unchanged from Ground Zeroes, now you have an enormous open-world to screw around and use your gadgets and abilities in more varied situations, from infiltrating bases to kidnapping wildlife (seriously). You can even choose which missions to tackle first, depending on where you go (either on foot, by horse, tank or chopper). All this while using the Fulton recovery balloons to abduct people and resources to build your base.

Or you can just spend 3 hours “uplifting” random goats.

One fun thing to note is that Hideo Kojima, the game’s director, really tried to keep the game in secret. I mean, there are videos still in the Internet where he goes through the trouble of creating a fake studio, under a fake name, and announcing the project as an independent game. But the fans of Metal Gear Solid saw through the ruse right away, solving the hidden clues and making the connection. Never underestimate the internet, or dedicated fans with too much time on their hands. So let’s hope you’re actually sneakier in-game than the marketing team. Zing!

18. Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor (2014)

Themes: Lord of the Rings characters, sword and magic

In this game based on Tolkien’s work, you take the place of Talon, a guy who had the misfortune of horribly dying. Understandably, you are quite angry. With the help of your undead guide, you have to…stop Sauron, I guess? Avenge your family? Whatever the case, you kill TONS of orcs.

You also make them uncomfortable by inappropriately caressing their cheeks.

With Mordor as an open world to explore (and murder the hell out of), you must navigate the hostile territory with your awesome parkour skills, killing orcs with sword, dagger, bow or magic. It’s like Assassin’s Creed meet Arkham Asylum, but with more beheadings.

Pop goes the weasel! Also, that dude on the left is about to lose his breakfast over this.

Where this game really comes together is with the Nemesis system: Orcs have a hierarchy, and killing you makes them move up. You can either kill or brainwash them, and even develop a rivalry with one in particular. And because every orc and trait is randomly generated for each game, your nemesis and your history will be exclusive to you. Unless you want to tell the developers, who actually reenacted one such story with voice acting in Youtube. And that’s a win, right there.

19. Styx: Master of Shadows

Themes: Inflitration, goblin coming-of-age, fantasy

The first goblin. Or at least the first charismatic one. Your heart’s desire is a literal heart (yup, a heart as in a beating, living heart…to each their own) of a World Tree, hidden away in a huge tower. So let’s infiltrate the hell out of it, ok?

Hey, being short is an advantage!

With different skill trees and various abilities to remain hidden and take advantage of the environment, Styx can use a combination of steel and magic to overcome problematic odds and move from one hiding spot to another. You can then use your blade to jump on top of your enemies, either loudly slashing them, or using your green little hands to muffle their screams. Or you can just rob them blind. Do mind larger enemies, though.

Hey, being short is a disadvantage. Crap.

A sequel has been announced for 2016, so trail away and die a lot: in the end, this is not the last time we’ll see our little green friend. And that’s a good thing.

Ok, ok. Garret the master-thief is actually opposed to killing random people, even if he does live in a nightmarish world of darkness and disease that looks like the worst fears of the Industrial Revolution. What is he doing in an assassins list? Two things: first, as you traverse the rooftops and streets stealing anything you can get your sticky fingers on, while uncovering a supernatural conspiracy in which you were accidentally involved, you’ll find you actually have the skills of an assassin, even if you choose not to kill. And secondly, if you have qualms with this you’re gonna hate the next entry. But let’s cross that bridge when it comes to it, ok?

Na na na na na na na na… guess who?

Using your natural agility and a stealthy approach, you must use the shadows to your advantage, either by avoiding light or extinguishing torches and candles. Apart from picking up everything of value that’s lying around, you also have the choice of sneaking behind someone and picking his pocket. And then wack him on the back of his head, if you want.

Or in the… nether regions.

With cool gadgets like water arrows to douse the flames, a cool little supernatural instinct to help you during the levels, an awesome hideout and supernatural plot, this remake brings the feeling of the old games to a new generation, ready to take the mantle of a master thief.

The free flow combat is back, along with the gadgets, the “predator” stages, and everything you loved about the previous Arkham games. Oh, and now we have the Batmobile, which is a freaking missile launching tank. With expanded gameplay mechanics, you can even summon allies during your combos and pummel that cowardly, superstitious lot that is the criminal underworld. All this while trying to beat that guy who looks like a high tech version of yourself.

Dude, I totally have to call your Alfred to get some of that fancy armor.

An amazingly fun and engaging game, it did have some troubles with its launch on PC. But after a series of patches, suspending the sales and then starting anew, the developers are constantly improving and patching any issues it could have. So you should really try it out. I mean, just look at the gameplay and tell me it doesn’t look slick. So have fun squashing skulls non-lethally, and remember no one will judge you if you start saying “I’m Batman” after every takedown.

So, if you really need more convincing, I have no idea what you want. I mean, action, adventure, stealth and cool plots.
