Batman is undoubtedly one of the most famous superheroes of all time. Equipped with his badass fighting skills, cool gadgets and a "I'm Batman" catchphrase that will leave you thinking, "Why is that his catchphrase" is the superhero we all love!

You don't have to be a DC fanboy to admit that DC and Warner Brothers made a lot of brilliant Batman games. Even if you despise how Batman is portrayed on TV (I blame you Ben Affleck), you must agree that Batman games, especially the Arkham series, is a gaming masterpiece.

Batman games have been a part of many gamers' childhoods across the world, so let's take a dip in the pool of nostalgia and take a look at the top 10 best Batman games for PC.

Number ten on this list is your very own,' Batman Vengeance'. Created and released by Ubisoft Montreal in 2001, Batman Vengeance was one of the initial three-dimensional Batman games to hit the gaming industry. The game begins with you as Batman running to save a damsel in distress. Little does the player know that the girl you'd be saving turns out to be Harley Quinn. So, gamers are left with a plot twist as soon as the game begins.

The iconic Mark Hamil's voiceover of 'The Joker' in video games began from Batman Vengeance, and we pray that he never discontinues voicing the Joker.

Apart from the Joker, Batman faces a lot of other villains as well, like Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, Ra's al Ghul, etc. The game features missions where you get to drive the Batplane and Batmobile. Using a multitude of fighting styles and utilizing your gadgets for puzzles and fights, Batman Vengeance was an overall success that led it to be one of the best Batman games to play on PC even today (provided you can tolerate 2001 graphics).

Enter Gotham City through the eyes of your favorite superhero through Batman: Arkham VR. It is a pretty short game, but this is the closest you can get to being Batman. It is actually a trial game by Rocksteady Studios to analyze the response of users towards a full-fledged VR Arkham game. In this game, you literally get to 'BE THE BATMAN'.

Although the game is short, yet it is extremely fun to play. There isn't much fighting, but you get to use cool Batman gadgets like Batarangs and Batclaw at your will.

If you love VR gaming and Batman, make sure to add Batman: Arkham VR to your library.

8. Injustice: Gods Among Us

Injustice is not exclusively a Batman game, but it does feature our favorite superhero. It is a fantasy-themed fighting game featuring the justice league and more!

The first game of its series, Injustice: Gods Among Us, is an amazing game with graphics and gameplay that are still enjoyable to this day.

Apart from fighting and combos, players can use powers that are specific to their chosen heroes or villains. For e.g. when you select to play as Batman, you can use a variety of his gadgets to grapple, stun or damage your enemies.

Each character has a specific superpower that charges over time; when playing as Batman, you signal the Batmobile and crush your opponent!

If you enjoy fighting games as opposed to open-world adventure Batman games, then Injustice: Gods Among Us is a game you'll love.

Injustice 2 has also been released but it seems pretty much similar to the original Injustice: Gods Among Us with updated graphics for next-gen and additional characters.

In Lego Batman, you not only ride the Batwing and Batmobile, but you get to fight enemies in water too through the Batboat.

Point and click games usually rely on storytelling, and this game is incredibly well-written in terms of story. It is an overall fun game, and there have been a lot of positive reviews for it.

5. Arkham Origins – Blackgate

The fourth installment in the Arkham series is Arkham Origins – Blackgate, which is a side-scrolling game and not an open-world adventure game like other parts of the series. This is the first time Batman meets Catwoman, and they both work together to bring down Blackmask, the penguin and the Joker inside Blackgate prison.

The dynamic 2D plane gameplay and hand-drawn comic cutscenes with the return of the original voice actors shows the creativity of the developers. No one could imagine an open-world action/adventure game like the Batman Arkham series could be a hit with a 2D plane gameplay and comical cutscenes, but they really pulled it off!

4. Batman: Arkham Asylum

The first of the Batman Arkham Series, Arkham Asylum, marks the first Game of Year to be the consistent game of the years' titles forRocksteady's Arkham series. This game was a masterpiece of its time and redefined the then next-gen gaming. With its incredible story, amazing fight to stealth gameplay and jaw-dropping open-world environment of Arkham Asylum, Rocksteady proved what it meant to deliver the best.

This game received tons of positive reviews and numerous game of the Year titles for PC and console.

3. Arkham Origins

The third installment on the Batman Arkham series is the Arkham Origins that takes a bit of a dark turn in the life of Bruce Wayne. The game portrays a young Bruce, full of anger and rage over the criminals of Gotham City. Black Mask has marked Batman for death for a 'One night to kill the Bat' and hired eight assassins to carry out this task.

Batman counters all eight assassins and comes out victorious, only to find that it wasn't Black Mask who hired the assassin's; it was actually the Joker portraying himself as Roman Sionis/Black Mask.

This game shows how Batman was introduced to his nemesis; the Joker. This game introduced a much larger Gotham City and fast travel points to quickly travel to different districts of the city with the help of the Batwing.

The snowy environment with adrenaline-fueled fights and stealth missions, Arkham Origins lived up to its name.

2. Batman: Arkham City

BATMAN Arkham City Gameplay Walkthrough - Part 2 - Say Hello to Harley (Let's Play)

The fans couldn't have enough of the revolutionary gameplay of Arkham Asylum and demanded more. Fans asked, and Rocksteady delivered yet another masterpiece that is Arkham City. The second installment to the Arkham Series was perceived even more positively than the first.

With similar gameplay and dynamics, Arkham City continued the story of Arkham Asylum, but this time gamers were introduced to a portion of Gotham City as compared to the first game in which you could only move inside Arkham Asylum.

The large map, amazing story and lots of notorious Batman villains were the highlights of this game. Some still consider Arkham City to be the best of the Batman Arkham series.

Arkham City has amazing DLCs too that came out after the incredible success of the game. In these DLCs you could control Catwoman, Harley Quinn and other characters to see their story after the events of Arkham City.

Before you Arkham City fanboys start attacking me for placing Arkham Knight on the first position of this list, let me state that everyone is entitled to their opinion, and you have to agree Arkham Knight is much better than Arkham city; in terms of environment, gameplay, and graphics!

Arkham Knight is the latest Arkham series release, and the game is a straight-up masterpiece! I remember seeing the trailer of this amazing game and just drooling all over the screen.

The game is fast-paced, with stunts that will make your jaw drop. From grapple boosting to the heavens above to jumping from Wayne towers directly to your Batmobile, Rocksteady has really hit a homerun with Arkham Knight.

Although there have been significant improvements in Arkham Knight, the most notable improvement is access to the Batmobile. You can drive around Gotham city in your racecar/tank, catching criminals, solving puzzles and destroying enemy tanks in skirmishes around the city!

Conclusion:

The following list is what I consider to be the top 10 best Batman games available to play on PC. Whenever there is talk of amazing games of this century, the Batman Arkham series is a must-add on that list.

Batman has never been on finer form than he is in Arkham Knight

The Batman Arkham series is by far and away the best Batman videogame franchise that has ever been released. The combat is fluid and agressive, the gadgets are cool and inventive and Batman himself is a total asskicking machine. But does Arkham Knight really improve that much on the previous games?

Well in short yes it most certainly does. And to showcase just why you'll love Batman's latest game I've compiled a top ten list for you, check it out.

10. Batman is Even Tougher

2009 was when we first encountered Batman in Arkham Asylum, a fact that makes me feel a little grey in the tooth now, thankfully though in the past six years he has continued to evolve and become an even more accomplished hero.

For his latest adventure Batman is more muscled and toned than he has ever been before, and the games combat mechanics have been tightened and expanded to allow him an even greater variety of ways to take down the countless enemies he will be facing off against.

With cape or without cape Alfred?

Batman’s armour has also been beefed up in Arkham Knight with a very nice gothic look that screams of Batman’s new aggressive style. Everything about Batman’s look here is geared towards an edgier and more violent approach that comes across beautifully in the new combat mechanics too, and in particular in the brand new ‘fear’ takedowns that will see Batman ripping through numerous enemies in a single move.

9. Gotham is a Beautiful Playground

Batman’s brand new playground is a dark and brooding masterpiece filled with curtains of rain lit by greasy moonlight and topped with black ominous thunderclouds, and in its perfect gothic way it’s hauntingly beautiful. The true dark essence of Batman has never been captured more perfectly than it has been here with Arkham Knight, this criminal infest city is on its knees, crumbling and abandoned and that sense of destitution and loss is portrayed perfectly with numerous buildings left simply to waste away.

But it’s not just the games outdoor areas that are a sight to behold. There are numerous well fleshed out and imagined interiors with pale flickering lighting that add a wonderful nerve shredding edge to the gameplay as you sneak along trying desperately to avoid another fist fight.

Everything here is geared towards making Gotham the truly sinister environment it is supposed to be, and it does so spectacularly. The darkness, the rain, the eery lighting, it all makes for some truly heart thumping moments.

8. Improved Combat Mechanics

It’s no great secret that one of the best things about the Batman Arkham series is its bone crunching combat, Batman is a true powerhouse when he’s taking on gangs of enemies and quite frankly they could have left it how it was and everyone would have been happy. But of course they couldn’t leave it alone and instead they’ve returned this time around with an even better combat system, I didn't think it could have been improved, but I was very much mistaken.

You're about to be in a world of hurt

Once again the combat is a mixture of stealthy takedowns and bone breaking hand to hand combat. What the developers have done here is to add more animation and more depth to Batman’s ability to take down his enemies hand to hand. Instead of a few simple counter moves they’ve given him the ability to throw his opponents face first into the concrete with enough jarring force to have the gamer wincing in sympathy, or at least they would be if they weren’t already doing the same thing to the next thug awaiting Batman’s unique brand of justice.

Everything about the combat in Batman Arkham Knight is designed to give the player the same core enjoyment they’ve come to know and love with enough new options to revamp the excitement and make Batman even more lethal than we've ever seen him before.

7. The Batmobile is Epic

It’s best not to think of the new Batmobile as a vehicle since it’s really more of a sidekick, a beautiful missile carrying tank of a sidekick. Your brand new weapon has been integrated into virtually every single aspect of Arkham Knight, it can lift cargo, grapple up buildings and can speed to your location with a single touch of a button, which is very handy when you’ve found yourself in a bit of a tight spot.

It is also capable of switching between superfast roadster and missile shooting tank with a simple tap of a button, allowing you to speed towards and then blast through most obstacles the game throws in your way. Thankfully it’s also a very pretty machine with an obvious Nolan-esq design to it, which is certainly the best Batmobile to be modelled upon.

There truly is no greater sensation in Arkham Knight than taking down a squad of tanks with your trusty sidekick spewing missiles like there’s no tomorrow.

6. New ‘Fear’ Takedowns Look Awesome

One of the newest elements to Arkham Knights is the ‘pinball KO’ manoeuvre which allows you to take down two or three enemies in quick succession with some spectacular animations which will be sure to have the player salivating in appreciation. Who doesn’t love to watch Batman smash his through a group of thugs as if they’re mannequins? Nobody that’s who.

This new takedown mechanic is fairly automatic which can make the takedowns feel a little like you're cheating, however, the strategy and stealth needed to get the men close enough together to execute it more than makes up for the ease of the combat itself. And the beautiful cinematic takedowns are so meticulously animated and choreographed that you really cannot get tired of watching it. And let’s face it; the idea of spreading fear throughout our enemy’s minds before punches their bones into dust is just devilishly tempting.

5. You can be a Villain

You don’t just have to Batman in Arkham Knight as there’s a whole host of characters, both good and bad, to explore. With the likes of Robin, Nightwing, Red Hood and Harley Quinn at your disposal the likelihood of getting bored of Gotham is incredibly small indeed.

Just don't look at her in the wrong way

This means you can play out you darkest super-villain fantasies this time around If you do ever get bored of soaring around the buildings of Gotham saving the innocent and upholding the name of Justice.

Thankfully none of these characters feel second rate when compared to Batman, they’re all beautifully created and they all have their own arsenal of tricks and weapons that open up even more avenues of playing the game. The possibilities here are almost limitless.

4. More Intelligent Enemies

In the past few games Batman has sometimes felt quite overpowered, even when he was facing off against a dozen enemies at once, in Arkham Knight though Batman’s enemies give him a bit more of a challenge than he’s had before.

First of all sneaking up to guards through floor grates is no longer a sure fire takedown manoeuvre. The enemy has now been equipped with thermal charges that they will not hesitate to throw down there to finish you off, and finish you off they most certainly will if you don’t scarper back from whence you came. This added difficulty in taking down guards means there’s an even greater need to plan your approach meticulously before you attempt its execution.

Even the slow quiet approach is no longer the certain success that it once one. You can no longer sit back and take out enemies at your own leisure as thugs will actively seek to rouse any fallen comrades, which will then alert them all to your presence in the vicinity and bring out reinforcements.

These are great new additions that not only add more difficulty to the game but also add another layer of strategy that really ups the excitement and tension.

3. More Iconic Villains

One of the best things about the Arkham series is the incredible plethora of villains they have to oppose our hero. From the likes of The Penguin, Two Face and The Joker we’ve been there, we’ve seen them and we have royally kicked their arses, and in doing so we have had some of the most memorably boss fights in recent videogame history.

With folks like The Riddler and Two Face confirmed in Arkham Knight we can guarantee more incredible boss fights in store for you all. There’s nothing greater than the feeling you get ploughing your way through a horde of henchmen and finally dealing out some rough justice to an arch enemy after hours of stalking and careful planning.

Players will once again live the dream of taking on the likes of Scarecrow, The Penguin and Harley Quinn as their favourite caped crusader. It’s a dream so many gamers have held since they were kids and no game has ever done it as well as Arkham Knight. And with the improved combat mechanics and great enemy intelligence it will be a greater challenge than any previous game in the series has given us.

2. Excellent Writing

All too often the focus in these kinds of articles is on gameplay and the look of the game, both of which are important of course, but if the game has a terrible plot and bad writing then even the best graphics and gameplay in the world can’t stop the game from being utter crap.

Thankfully the writing team of Sefton Hill and Paul Crocker have done a wonderful job nailing down the narrative flow in Arkham Knight. The plot is emotional and gripping, never allowing the player to feel a single moment of mediocrity or boredom. You never balk at a bad line and you never shake your head at the ridiculous reasons behind a characters actions, everyone has strong credible motives that add a sense of realism to Gotham’s beautiful world. In the past the Dark Knight has taken on his fair share of criminal masterminds and he’s managed to defeat them all. Now though the developers of Arkham Knight have given him one of his toughest challenges yet, the adversary known only as the Arkham Knight.

This dark unknown foe is a vigilante seeking justice while harbouring a fierce grudge against Batman. Who is this mysterious adversary and can Batman possibly overcome him to emerge victorious once again? Or will the Arkham Knight be able to take down the Batman? Only time will tell.

What’s great about having a brand new villain to take on is the true sense of originality it gives the latest game. Sure it’s awesome taking on The Joker and The Riddler but it can feel like we’re simply revisiting the comics and the films in videogame format. With a unique baddie to take down players will get to experience an entirely new villain in the Batman universe and forge their own unique story as they do so, which is incredibly exciting.

Batman Arkham Knight: 5 Interesting Things You Must Know

Family Matters

Since the reveal trailer, Rocksteady Studios has made it very clear that this Batman game will have one strong theme that drives it: Family.

As his deceased father, Thomas Wayne, narrates what his wishes are for his son, Bruce Wayne prepares to face the streets as our Dark Knight. The villains have emptied Gotham City and have banded together under Scarecrow to finally end Batman. Helping Scarecrow achieve this is the Arkham Knight, a mysterious newcomer who boasts the ability to kill Batman. But Bruce isn’t alone. At his side are Catwoman, Nightwing, Robin, Oracle, and his allies in the GCPD; the family he’s built up over the years of crime fighting.

Rocksteady promises to end their Arkham franchise with a bang. So with a fond farewell to this series, I present to you 5 facts you should know about Arkham Knight.

1. Gotham City is 5x the size of Arkham City

Over the course of these last few games, our world has been growing larger. From the humble beginnings in Arkham Asylum to the now dizzying landscape of Gotham City, we as fans are about to jump into a large swimming pool of urban super hero-ing.

Rocksteady Studios’ marketing manager Guy Perkins has told IGN about that the larger map is the result of switching from linear gameplay to an open world. The addition of the grappling hook and the Batmobile to the gliding mechanics from the previous games will allow players to effectively turn Gotham City into their own personal jungle gym.

2. The game has a slew of DLC that changes based on where you pre-ordered your copy

Arkham Knight is looking like a phenomenal game. But your experiences may differ based on where you got your copy from. Here’s a useful to help you navigate through where you should get your game. Rocksteady Studios has not released an official statement yet if there will be a way to obtain all of the DLC later in the future.

3. The voice actors behind this game are amazing!

Did you know that the same person who voiced Timmy Turner from Fairlyodd Parents, Bubbles from the Powerpuff Girls, Rikku from Final Fantasy X and Raven from Teen Titans also voices Harley Quinn? Tara Strong has won numerous awards for her stellar voice work and it’s great to know she’ll reprising her role as Harley Quinn. Joining her is Troy Baker (https://twitter.com/troybakerva), best known for his role as Booker DeWitt from Bioshock Infinite and the Joker from Arkham Origins, voicing Harvey Dent (Two Face) and according to IMDB, the Arkham Knight. Also on board is the legendary Kevin Conroy who reprises his role as the voice of Batman. Conroy has been voicing Batman for 23 years!

4. This game will feature a character switch system

Rocksteady games dubs this system “Dual Play.” It will allow players to switch between their favorite heroes and, as the trailers suggest, pull off tag-team moves between the two characters. So far, the only confirmed playable characters are Batman, Robin, Nightwing and Catwoman. Harley Quinn, Red Hood and Batgirl are only playable through DLC.

Unfortunately for fans that want to share the experience of being the Dark Knight, Rockstead Studios has confirmed that this will be a single player game only; there will be no cooperative play. Despite that minor flaw, Arkham Knight is still shaping up to be one of 2015’s best blockbuster games.

5. The Arkham Knight

The Arkham Knight is a brand new villain to the Batman mythos. He wears a suit of armor similar to Batman’s and has been shown wielding two pistols as his weapon of choice. In recent trailers, the Arkham Knight has been showing mocking Batman and wanting vengeance on him for some reason. He has also been shown to possess a strange amount of knowledge regarding Batman’s armor and tactics. Fans have speculated that this person is former-Robin Jason Todd, also known as the Red Hood. Although, a Red Hood DLC has been announced for Gamestop pre-orders, it could be that those DLC story missions will act as an origin story to how the Red Hood becomes the Arkham Knight.

In fact, that theory would also explain why the Arkham Knight’s army of mercenaries all have a consistent theme of red (some of them even wear red hoods).

In this writer’s opinion, it would make sense for Jason to return to Gotham City, unite all of Batman’s enemies in one place so he can kill them all/keep their crimes in check, and then get vengeance on Batman for failing to save him. It would also help explain why Scarecrow would want to empty Gotham City of all its citizens first since Jason still cares about protecting innocent bystanders; he just doesn’t care about the lives of criminals..

While this theory seems completely plausible, the only way to know for sure at this point is to wait patiently for the game’s release.

So many questions still remain. Where does the Red Hood factor into the story of Arkham Knight? Who is the Arkham Knight? How will the series end?
