More often than not, video game adaptations in movies fall short of understanding what makes its source material good and complex in the first place. As a result, we are frequently presented with underwhelming works like Uwe Boll's Alone in the Dark or any of the later Resident Evil films directed by Paul W.S. Anderson.

15. House of the Dead (2003)

A group of college students travels to a mysterious island to attend a rave, which is soon taken over by bloodthirsty zombies.

Okay, perhaps it wasn't the best idea to start the list with Uwe Boll's House of the Dead, but let me just say that just for its pure craziness, this film is worth seeing at least once. This is a type of film that’s so bad it's good, featuring a cheesy zombie plot in a cheesy setting full of undead.

While it also has some incredibly questionable creative choices like including gameplay scenes from its source material, other than to serve as a transition, it also has some genuinely entertaining moments. Honestly, its 10-minute slow-motion sequence should be enough of a reason for you to watch this film, no drinks needed.

14. Dead Space: Downfall (2008)

The colony of USG Ishimura finds themselves slowly going insane and starting to kill each other after discovering the Red Marker. The horror is soon intensified when the necropmorphs, a group of hideous creatures, show up.

Unlike other adaptations, Dead Space: Downfall serves as a companion piece for the incredible Dead Space game. Adapting the creepy setting of USG Ishimura into a 2D animation showcase filled with grotesque creatures and more blood than has ever been seen in a cartoon.

Although its story may not be the most original out there, since it strongly borrows from other military crew in space movies like Aliens, it's still a good time and pushes the envelope of what can be shown in a typical animated movie.

13. Dreadout (2019)

Six friends visit an abandoned apartment to gain fame only to accidentally open a portal to a world where evil spirits reside.

The game Dreadout was one of the many games that gained massive traction within the youtube space back in the early 2010s, and this movie adaptation aims to bring Asian horror back into the mainstream. The result is a decent flick that has tons of potential, not taken.

With some shoddy CGI, unlikeable characters, and a story that only exists because of plot holes, the film can be a bit of a tough watch at times. Despite its shortcomings, however, Dreadout still manages to stand out from many of the other adaptations out there, and it’s one that you should seek out if you have the chance.

12. Dead Rising: Watchtower (2015)

The film follows Chase Carter, a reporter in search of his big break, and Jordan, his camerawoman, who find themselves in a precarious predicament after victims of a previous zombie outbreak turn. The two now have to make an effort to survive while uncovering more about the pandemic.

Dead Rising: Watchtower aims to adapt the silly and wacky journalistic adventure of its game counterpart. With government conspiracy aplenty, tons of creative zombie-killing weapons, and hilarious humor that closely resembles what is seen in the games.

Every scene in Watchtower is such a treat to watch for video game aficionados since it creatively integrates many of the game's elements into its narrative, such as the time limit, journalistic element, and psychopaths.

11. Ao Oni Ver 2.0 (2015)

A group of friends goes into a mansion that is rumored to have monsters inside and what they find will change their lives forever.

Ao Oni Ver 2.0 is one of the more obscure adaptations out there, though don’t underestimate it because this here packs in one hell of a time. It acts as a 2.0 version of its forerunner, an adaptation that, to be honest, is not even watchable. Yet as an update, it does an incredible service not only as a reboot of sorts but as an adaptation.

Characters that are based on the games, finally resemble their game counterpart and the ever-so-creepy Ao Oni are more brutal than ever, giving some pretty intense scenes that border on the uncanny. Make sure to skip the first Ao Oni film and jump ahead on this bizarre yet fun adaptation.

10. Ao Oni The Animation (2017)

Five students are trying to find out more about one of their hometown's oldest folklore that is now made into a video game, Ao Oni. Things become darker as they draw closer to the truth.

At first glance, Ao Oni The Animation appears to be a horrendously produced CG film that feels like a complete downgrade to its live-action predecessor, however, if you can get past its shoddy animation, you’ll find a surprisingly well put animated horror film with an incredible atmosphere.

Featuring an even more bizarre story that’s unmatched by others on the list and many uncanny and creepy scenes with the titular Ao Oni creature than you can count. The Ao Oni franchise is one forgotten gem that you should try even if you may not like the games.

9. Resident Evil (2002)

A special military unit fights a powerful, out-of-control supercomputer and hundreds of scientists who have mutated into flesh-eating creatures after a laboratory accident.

One of the many Resident Evil films by Paul W.S. Anderson, this first adaptation attempts to adapt the grisly story of the original Resident Evil game while using a different approach to its storytelling. The result is an action-packed thrill ride with plenty of kick-ass scenes that will have you on the edge of your seat.

The film never shies away from numerous great set pieces, such as the laser scene that RE 4 then later mimics and the fierce dog-kicking scene with Milla Jovovich's Alice, making up for any scares it may lack in that regard.

8. Resident Evil: Degeneration (2008)

Clair Redfield and Leon S. Kennedy’s survival skills are once again put to the test, after a zombie outbreak occurs in an airport. They soon discover that this incident may be part of a larger conspiracy.

The first CGI film entries in the franchise, Degeneration does what other RE film doesn’t: it builds on what the games have established and continues to present a unique story set in the same universe. It brings Claire and Leon back together for a new adventure full of numerous shambling zombies all rendered in gorgeous CGI.

Despite its occasionally odd animation, particularly with Leon's stiff movement and an almost unrecognizable face and attitude, as well as the movie's greater emphasis on action, it is still a film that is deserving of the Resident Evil moniker and one that you should watch.

7. Resident Evil: Damnation (2012)

Leon S. Kennedy (Matthew Mercer) sneaks into a former Soviet state to investigate rumors that bio-organic weapons are being used in their civil war. He is immediately ordered to evacuate but ignores the order to stop the weapons from being used.

Resident Evil: Degeneration is a solid transitional entry from games to movies for the franchise, and this sequel took everything that made its predecessor great and then some. Delivering an entry that’s full of more references than you can count and many insane but memorable set pieces to witness.

Sure it may have taken the franchise into the action territory even further, however, its entertainment value can’t be understated. You should check this out if you’re a fan of the franchise.

6. Doom (2005)

A team of space Marines is sent to investigate strange events at a research facility on Mars but find themselves at the mercy of genetically enhanced killing machines.

Granted, it may have diverged greatly from the games that served as its inspiration, but that doesn't mean that 2005's Doom is a particularly strong adaptation. Bringing a likable cast of military characters—including Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson—along with a lot of action and atmospheric horror.

Along with the ever-so-awesome “first-person shooting scene” that serves as a wink to games, 2004’s Doom will keep you glued to your seat from beginning to end.

5. Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004)

Yet another Resident Evil film on the list, Alice wakes up in the Raccoon City hospital after the area has been overrun by zombies, and must now make it out of the city before a nuclear bomb is dropped.

While the first RE movie may have placed its horror in a strict claustrophobic mansion that’s heavily reminiscent of the Spencer Mansion of the video games, Apocalypse brings not only the horror but as well a heavy dose of action to the streets of Racoon City. And the end product is a heart-pumping action romp filled with many references that will delight the fans of the games.

This is the adaptation where we see the best interpretation of Jill and Nemesis on the big screen, two excellent and iconic characters that look like they were ripped straight out of the video games. And the film’s protagonist Alice is even more badass than before, resulting in one of the most highly entertaining adaptations yet.

4. Fatal Frame (2014)

A student at a conservative all-girls school tries to unravel the connection between a series of deaths and what appears to be a cursed photograph.

Fatal Frame is another obscure adaptation from Asia, and it’s one hidden gem that you should definitely check out, thanks to its touching story that places its horror within the confines of a single location, along with featuring a rootable cast of characters with surprising amounts of subversion.

Although it barely resembles the games that inspired it, Fatal Frame nonetheless never fails to provide some genuinely eerie moments, heightened by incredible direction work, as well as being able to successfully ooze dreamlike visuals that complement well to the film’s atmosphere. This is a curse worth spreading.

3. Resident Evil: Welcome to Racoon City (2021)

Set in 1998, this origin story explores the secrets of the mysterious Spencer Mansion and the ill-fated Raccoon City as it follows the story of Clair and Chris Redfield, Leon S. Kennedy and the other STARS members.

While Paul W.S. Anderson’s RE films proved themselves to be a success, the longer the movie’s mythology grows, its quality weakens with it, especially with The Final Chapter being one of the worst movie game adaptations to date yet. Hence, a reboot of the series was necessary, and who better to helm it than a fan of the franchise?

What we got is the best live-action RE adaptation to date. It’s a celebration of the two remakes of the first two games, combining two stories to create a larger narrative that follows many of the beloved characters of the games. The film is fan service aplenty and has a genuinely moody atmosphere that manages to capture the game that it's based on so well.

If you could only watch one Resident Evil film, then this is definitely it.

2. Silent Hill (2006)

Rose (Radha Mitchell) takes her daughter to a town called Silent Hill, a quiet little town that seems to hold a much darker and sinister secret. However, after crashing, her daughter disappears, and now it's up to Rose to find her in this fog-drenched town.

Silent Hill is not only the king of horror video game movie adaptation but as well as adaptations in general. This film is not like any other, it isn’t just a film that you watch, it is an experience. And the movie does a wonderful job of conveying this essence from its source material.

The incredible music never fails to evoke a sense of loneliness, making for a perfect setup for its stellar atmosphere, and the iconic monsters from the video games make a jump into the big screen, with such a menacing presence that even those who haven’t played the games may still recognize them.

And while it certainly has changes done to the story, it all serves a purpose and that’s to create a bigger, more original theme and message that still feels like it belongs within the rules that the franchise has established.

1. Detention (2019)

In 1962 Taiwan, a group of students join an underground book club hosted by their counselor. One day, the counselor vanishes into thin air, and the student's search for him takes them to a realm dominated by ghosts and spirits.

Detention may not reach the same iconography as Resident Evil and Silent Hill, however, it does have the title of having the best game movie adaptation by far. It’s a film that not only sheds light on the psychological horror of Asia but as well as its dark history, delivering a grounded and gut punch of a film that feels like a bizarre journey.

The film is incredibly moving as it tells a gripping tale that fleshes out the video game's story that inspired it. And many of the scenes ripped straight out of the game never feel forced and feel like they serve an actual purpose to the plot.

Detention is one sitting that you won’t want to miss.

23. Corpse Party: Tortured Souls

After performing a charm that would supposedly unite them as friends, a group of students is teleported to the mysterious Heavenly Host Elementary School where they are visited by the spirits of the school's murdered students.

The Corpse Party video games are some of the most infamous horror RPG-maker games out there due to its over the top violence and story, and this adaptation succeeds at adapting its source material’s strongest suit. Though what it may lack in its story department, the anime definitely makes up for with its so much brutal death scenes that will make even the most die-hard fans of the genre, squeamish.

22. Ao Oni: The Animation

Five students are trying to find out more about one of their hometown's oldest folklore that is now made into a video game, Aooni. The closer they get to the truth, the darker things get.

Despite its choppy animation, Ao Oni is still an effectively creepy anime that manages to translate the tone and atmosphere of its source material. With such a bonkers story, bloody kills, and uncanny Ao Oni creatures, this is one anime adaptation worth visiting.

21. Terraformars

In an attempt to colonize Mars 21st-century scientists are tasked with terraforming the planet. Their goal is to seed the planet with modified algae to absorb sunlight and purify the atmosphere, and cockroaches, whose corpses spread the algae across the planet as they feed.

A show filled with so many disgusting mutated cockroach creatures, Terraformars is a show that’s purely non-stop action with loads of gore and deaths sprinkled throughout it. Simply put, if you like over-the-top anime then this one’s for you but seriously though who wouldn’t be scared of these hideous creatures?

20. Gantz: 0

People who have recently died are brought back to life and supplied with high-tech weapons in order to defeat an army of monsters in Tokyo and Osaka.

Considered to be one of the best adaptations of its source material by many, Gantz 0 is a stunning sci-fi horror romp to a world filled with many freakish creatures. Backed by the copious amount of thrilling action scenes, made even more jaw-dropping thanks to its incredibly gorgeous visuals.

19. The Flowers of Evil

The story follows a middle school student named Takao Kasuga who's forced into a "contract" by fellow student Sawa Nakamura, after being caught stealing the gym clothes of his crush Nanako Saeki and the series of events afterward that follow these three characters.

Incredibly surreal and uncanny are some of the words to describe The Flowers of Evil. With a unique story and deep atmosphere, the anime excellently makes you feel stressed with each of its uncomfortable scenes. Though its art style may prove to be jarring, this only further adds to the uneasiness and dread of the anime.

18. Highschool of the Dead

A student witnesses a zombie breakout in his own high school and gets along with a weapon maniac, the girl who was his crush, a master fighter, and the school nurse. Together, they make the best of every situation and do everything to survive.

Sex, horror, and action make for such a weird combination, however, Highschool of the Dead embraces this absurdity by giving us a gripping story filled with so many bombastic set pieces, with some fan services interspersed with everything. Sure it’s not the type of anime that shook the genre but if you’re looking for an entertaining anime to watch then simply look no further.

17. Mieruko-Chan

Mieruko-chan tells the story of a girl who tries to deal with the paranormal by acting indifferent toward it. Miko Yotsuya is an ordinary high school student who has the unfortunate ability to see horrifying ghosts and spirits that haunt her and the people around her.

Mieruko-Chan is a perfect blend of horror and comedy, with a little bit of fan service in between. With so many creepy ghosts design, the show never fails to bring fear to its audience. What makes many of Mieruko-Chan’s attempts at horror even more effective however is that some of its scares are also a reference to other iconic jumpscares. Not only does the show manages to scare but it also succeeds at being a parody of the usual horror cliche.

16. Junjo Ito Collection

Junjo Ito Collection is an anthology adaptation that brings many of Ito’s horrific works in full sinister motion.

Despite being a controversial adaptation, there’s still something good to be had when watching it, with it adapting many of Ito’s incredible array of works is one of the noteworthy reasons to watch it. And like its source material, it doesn’t fail to provide such lingering dread thanks largely to its disturbing and surreal imagery.

Regardless of the adaptation’s shortcomings, however, it’s still a strong and atmospheric anthology series with a gorgeous art style and animation that will bring you in for a wild ride.

15. Danganronpa 3

Serving as a direct sequel to the events of the video games, Danganronpa 3 is divided into three arcs, with each story focusing on the participants of the previous killing games and the events that led to the infamous destruction of society.

Instead of adapting the video game’s story as its forerunner did, Danganronpa 3 instead tells an all-new canonical tale full of everything that you expect from the franchise. A colorful cast of characters, enthralling mystery, many unique kills, and many mind-boggling plot twists. What makes this anime even far more engaging is the fact that two arcs were aired at the same time which reveals a large and significant connection to every game in the franchise.

The Future arc is more of the familiar Danganronpa premise with a much more somber tone, while the Despair arc combines all of the Danganronpa staples to create a chaotic but depressing story that every fan of the game wouldn’t want to miss.

14. Happy Sugar Life

The story follows Satou Matsuzaka, who has someone she likes. She experiences a sweet feeling when she sleeps with her and thought it must be love. Everything will be forgiven as long as she protects this feeling, even if she tricks, commits crimes, steals, or even kills, she thought.

Despite its adorable art style, Happy Sugar Life is an anime not to be taken lightly. Its disturbing premise makes for such a stomach-turning watch and all of it is hidden behind the colorful and bubbly art style. And the anime also tackles such heavy themes and subjects which further exemplifies the darkness that the show aims for.

All of this combined makes Happy Sugar Life a masterclass in psychological horror.

A family reunion is held on a secluded island. The dying patriarch wants to see his lost love one last time, so he tries summoning her with black magic and that's when the murders begin.

While it may not be as strong as its visual novel source material, Umineko: When They Cry’s story is like a fantasy turned into a beautiful nightmare thanks to its gorgeous presentation, setting, and many odd imageries. Along with a strong and gripping mystery to keep you engaged in its story.

12. Death Note

For his own amusement, Ryuk drops his "Death Note" into the human world. Light stumbles upon it, deeming the first of its rules ridiculous: the human whose name is written in this note shall die. However, the temptation is too great, and Light experiments by writing a felon's name, which disturbingly enacts his first murder.

Death Note used to be one of the most popular horror anime back in the day, and for good reason, it’s a stellar show that will make you morally question every action that its characters make. From its gorgeous animation, and fantastic soundtrack, to its intriguing concept, simply everything about this show is amazing.

Though it may be light on scares, its engaging story is still a worthy investment for horror fans. Just try to avoid the Netflix live-action adaptation.

A college student is attacked by a ghoul, a being that feeds on human flesh. He later receives an organ transplant from the ghoul, becoming a part monster himself.

While it may be on the slow side, it does ultimately pay off in a crazy way that even fans of the genre won’t expect.

A young man named, Koichi Sakakibara, transfers to a new school where he finds himself drawn into a mystery involving a mysterious girl and a series of gruesome deaths.

What happens if you take the paranoic concept of Final Destination and blend it with the art style of an anime, well, you get Another. An ever so creepy anime that will never fail to make your skin tingle thanks largely to its superb atmosphere that no other anime has ever managed to capture and a large cast of characters waiting for their creative demise.

6. Theater of Darkness: Yamishibai

An old man in a yellow mask shows up at a children's playground and tells them ghost stories based on myths and urban legends of Japanese origin. The man tells the stories on the back of his bicycle using a traditional kamishibai method and features a new tale each week.

Featuring a variety of terrifying stories, Yamishibai provides everything that you can ask for in a horror anime. With many of its stories only lasting for a few minutes, there’s no shortage of scares to be had. And an ever so creepy atmosphere and unsettling storyteller that connects all the episodes together, Yamishibai is an essential watch.

5. School-Live!

School-Live! follows the adventures of the School Living Club as they promote independence and self-determination through their lively time residing at Megurigaoka Private High School.

Don’t be fooled by School-Live!’s adorable art style and characters as deep within its kawaii slice-of-life premise is a truly dark and thrilling tale that even those who are familiar with the genre would not expect the direction that it will take. This is the type of anime that’s best served as spoiler free as possible.

4. Parasite

17-year-old Shinichi Izumi is partially infected by a Parasyte, a monster that butcher and consumes humans. He must learn to co-exist with the creature if he is to survive both the life of a Parasyte and a human as part monster, part person.

If you’re into body horror then definitely check out Parasite. An anime that’s reminiscent of many sickening horror films like The Thing, Parasite is body horror galore thanks to its many grotesque and creative deaths and transformations. While the anime may have more thrills than chills, it still doesn’t skimp out on the gore, making it a worthwhile watch for horror fans.

3. Attack on Titan

After his hometown is destroyed and his mother is killed, young Eren Jaeger vows to cleanse the earth of the giant humanoid Titans that have brought humanity to the brink of extinction.

What else can we say about Attack on Titan that hasn’t been said before? A fantastic show with incredible world-building and engaging mystery that will keep you immersed. And with so many bombastic action set pieces with its grotesque and hideous Titans, there’s no shortage of spectacle to be had.

While the show leans heavily more towards action than horror, those looking for an action-filled body horror story, then look no further than Attack on Titan.

2. Higurashi When They Cry

Keiichi Maebara has just moved to the quiet little village of Hinamizawa in the summer of 1983 and quickly becomes inseparable friends with schoolmates Rena Ryuuguu, Mion Sonozaki, Satoko Houjou, and Rika Furude. However, darkness lurks underneath the seemingly idyllic life they lead.

Higurashi: When They Cry will take you on a twisted and brutal walk through its seemingly peaceful town filled with intriguing mystery, a cast of characters to love, and shocking plot twists one after another. You see, this isn’t just a simple horror anime, it’s a deeply complicated journey that will live in your head even after its story has ended.

And the show proves itself to be such a promising entry in the genre that even many of its later entries still manage to provide scare and shock, just when you thought you already know all the answers to its mysteries.

A pop singer gives up her career to become an actress, but she slowly goes insane when she starts being stalked by an obsessed fan and what seems to be a ghost of her past.

Ao Oni later got 2 sequels released to android, an anime series, and a movie. For me, it’s one of the more iconic RPG maker games and it’s a nostalgic masterpiece. The gameplay is simple: you get separated from your friends and locked in a mansion. You must explore the mansion and find items that will help you move forward to reunite with your friends, all the while trying to survive and avoid encounters with the demon.

Mayu Suzumoto transfers to a new high school. Her friend Ayumi decides to help her get to know her future classmates by doing a charm she found on the internet which is supposed to bind them all as friends, forever. The charm “worked” by seemingly transporting all of the classmates to a horrid, tragic version of an elementary school filled with vengeful spirits of elementary-aged children.

Corpse Party has a few chapters which can all have different endings depending on your choices. The game can get really, REALLY morbid with its gore. The game slowly develops a tense atmosphere by having you explore the horrific school at your own pace, and learn the gruesome secrets bit by bit.
