HUMANITY SOUGHT A WAY TO SURVIVE, SO OUR ANCESTORS CREATED THE JAVELIN EXOSUITS, HANDCRAFTED ARMOR THAT GAVE US SUPERHUMAN ABILITIES.

Anthem is BioWare’s upcoming online action RPG. Deciding to switch from single player RPGs, BioWare throws its hat into the online ring. Anthem is getting ready to duel it out with Destiny 2 which will most likely be it’s biggest competitor. This McGregor vs Mayweather match up will last a lot longer than its namesake. Anthem looks expansive and breathtaking from it’s early footage and I think we can all agree that it will satisfy our Gundam fantasy...you know the one where we pilot mechs and save the day? Just me? *ahem* let’s get on with the facts...

10. Play Online...only Online

Online: that blue light energy thing symbolizes..online

A bummer for some yet not for those eager to play with their friends and allies. BioWare has announced that Anthem can only be played online. This doesn’t mean you have to play with others, if you want to go solo for a while you will be able do so and then switch back and forth. In fact, you can drop in and out of a friend’s mission whenever you’d like. Anthem can be played without worrying about being too high or too low a level. This way you can have fun without having to worry too much about being One Punch Man’s latest victim.

9. No more tears, I mean loading screens

Say goodbye to loading screens as Anthem is going to be a seamless open world. It doesn’t sound like a big deal but trust me when you’re in the zone and you suddenly see buffering and a loading bar whilst traveling, you might as well take a bathroom break, some game take that long to load. Anthem uses the Frostbite 3 game engine which is the same engine BioWare used for Dragon Age: Inquisition and Mass Effect: Andromeda.

How will you be traveling around in the world of Anthem? Well Mr. Stark put on your suit because you will be flying. Each mech is able to fly for a period of time before it overheats. The best part besides the wind against your armor is the ability to cool down as you glide over water. This way you don’t plummet to the ground when you need to stay in the air for longer periods of time. Who knew flying could be so fun?

7. Ultimate!!!

A really interesting game mechanic is the ultimate attack. Each mech has their own ultimate that can either vanquish multiple enemies or finish a boss. You can also begin a fight with an ultimate, the possibilities are endless but the most crucial detail is the timing… “it might be time to get some fresh air start paying attention to the details some of those details might need your help.”-John Blake, The Dark Knight Rises.

There are very few things more disappointing than a wasted ultimate. Oh wait, remember that Ashe, Zilean, Amumu, Pantheon, and Jarvis IV fail? You don’t? Good because team ultimate fails are so much worse than one failed ultimate. Let’s get back to happy thoughts, from explosive siege cannon shots to a blade dance that leaves the audience in pieces, fighting just got a whole lot more interesting.

6. Our World, My Story

Having a shared world makes it hard to find some down time but unlike most games that are online and cooperative, Anthem has a solution. When out and about on a quest with your friends you all share a synced world, the same time and weather and all that. But when you enter Fort Tarsis, the hub of the game, you can do whatever you want. The people around you react to your decisions and actions. You will be able to talk to your crew and even random agents that are seeking your aid. Your interactions with them will not be forgotten and something you say or do may just influence things for better or for worse.

Mike Gamble, lead producer, says, “ You have to make sure that the personal story choices and the missions blend and seem seamless. And, of course, there are technological challenges regarding saving your own personal choices within this larger context.

Bridging those things is one of the major challenges, and this is something we’ve worked hard on. To solve it, the game team built these different kinds of personal and shared story moments into the DNA of the game.”

Meet your crew:

Owen is an optimistic and ambitious young cypher who’s learning the trade at your side.
Faye is a mysterious and work-obsessed cypher who comes from a more prestigious background than Owen.
Haluk is a grumpy but dedicated Freelancer who keeps your Javelin in working order.

5. PVE for now

BioWare has announced that they will keep Anthem cooperative for now. There will not be a PVP mode yet due to balancing reasons. They have stated that they might be open to having PVP later on, so if that’s what you are really looking forward to it might be a possibility in the future. With the team working on soley perfecting the PVE game mode, one can’t help but get excited about how good this game will be. I hope you learned how to work together when you were younger because there’s a saying that it makes the dream work.

Alas your love shall stay unrequited. According to Anthem Lead Producer Mike Gamble “There are no romances. There are friendships. Some of the stuff we did with Mass Effect – the Citadel DLC specifically – there was a lot of friendship moments. You and Garrus sitting up, shooting – that kind of stuff, we want to lean into that. The romantic stuff, we’re moving away from that for Anthem.”

Anthem will not have any romance options available at least as of now; it shifts its focus to friendship which might not be such a bad thing. Friends before romance ends, am I right?

2. Rolling as a Squad 4 Deep

Anthem allows up to four players to work together and take on the world. BioWare stresses what they call Triumph as One. What is Triumph as One? Well I’m glad you asked, because I too did not know.

“Triumph as One is the belief that four players can come together with a shared goal, fight their way to the finish line, and earn crazy amounts of loot, all because they chose to unite.”

“The truest Anthem experience is four players adventuring together and working as a team.”

1. Did you say Combo and Weak Spots?

One of most interesting parts about combat in Anthem are combos and weak spots. Different mechs have different skills which can detonate for devastating effects. For example, a frozen enemy can be burned for extra damage, or try a water and lightning attack. You’ll just have to let your powers combine to see how many combos you can pull off, you Planeteer you.

If that’s not enough strategy for you, the enemies you face will have certain weak spots that may just be the difference between winning and losing a fight. Although, not all creatures have the same spot, so accuracy and tactics will be crucial whether you’re trying to snipe a chink in the armor or flanking for the jugular.

Anthem Release Date

Anthem is a new action-RPG set to release sometime in early 2019. Its developer, Bioware is known for many titles including Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic, Neverwinter Nights, and the Dragon Age series.

Anthem will be an online multiplayer RPG set in what is known as a “shared world” environment. There will be multiplayer and single player elements in the game. In ‘multiplayer’ situations, players will be able to group up in squads of four.

Anthem was first shown at 2017’s E3, with gameplay being shown during Microsoft’s press conference at the event.

Anthem's Story Line

Players are part of a group known as the “Freelancers”. They are tasked with protecting the human race on an alien planet some distance from Earth. They don customizable exo suits known as Javelins to complete missions around the alien planet.

This is the first time that Bioware is putting something like the Javelins into one of their games. The closest thing to it in a previous title would be Mass Effect’s Biotic Amp, which only allowed a handful of attacks.

There are four types of Javelins, each with a special trait: the Ranger (all purpose), Colossus (strength-focused), Storm (‘spellcaster’ type), and the Interceptor (unknown).

The Company behind Anthem

Bioware stepped into game development starting with Shattered Steel and Baldur’s Gate in the 1990’s. With well-received titles like the Dragon Age series and Baldur’s Gate, Anthem is likely to be well-polished when it comes to character-driven elements. Anthem was originally announced at E3 2014, making the game development time about 7 years. There is no clear indication on the budget used to develop the game, but the developer’s decision to postpone work on other titles suggests it is a massive undertaking.
Bioware is hoping to create a game that will keep players engaged for at least a decade. Dragon Age: Inquisition, the third game in the DA series, had an online play element, but party members were always random.

In Anthem, players will be able to squad up with others playing the game for dungeons and taking on enemies that are a challenge for one player. Casey Hudson, Bioware’s GM, has been evasive when asked about other multiplayer activities.

The Hope for The Future

With Mass Effect: Andromeda having been so poorly received by gamers, many agree that Bioware is relying solely on Anthem to breathe new life back into the company. The date of release has been pushed back twice, with some saying a release won’t happen till after 2019.

Executive producer of both Anthem and the Dragon Age series, Mike Darrah, stated in a tweet that teams are hard at work on both. News has slowly come out about Bioware’s new online MMO, but there information on the fourth Dragon Age. Some fans are hopeful that this is an indication of company’s focus on Anthem.

5 Things We Want from Anthem

Anthem is a new online action-RPG by Bioware set to release in early 2019. Bioware is most known for its work on different types of role-playing games. Developers have stated that they are focusing on both Anthem and the Dragon Age franchise. With an estimated release date already announced for Anthem, fans are hopeful that Bioware will deliver a great game.

But, what is it that fans want with Anthem? What do they expect from the developers who’ve delayed this project twice already?

1. Customization

Few games today offer customization for a player’s in-game avatar. Those that do offer customization offer very little in the way of changing a character’s looks. Gamers looking forward to the game hope to see things like customizing colors, decals, and enhancing weapons to deliver as much death as possible to your enemies. With the right loadout, even a pair of Javelins may be able to take out hordes of enemies. Some have stated that the customization model for Warframe is a good example to follow.

2. Raids, Guild Battles, Dungeons

Many online games offer missions like raids or guild battles. A raid can be things like taking on a very powerful boss-level enemy, taking on other players on the field of battle, and challenging your skill against other groups in a player vs. environment where you fight computer-controlled enemies.

3. Offline Mode

Bioware has stated that it will offer a single-player campaign for Anthem. There are many players excited about the opportunity to play solo, but a few have worries about what it may mean. Many gamers prefer to experience such a story solo so they can get a feel for the game before taking on squad-based missions.

4. Affordable DLC

Most new games being released carry a hefty price tag of around $60. For some, this includes only the main game and none of the DLC. For others, it may mean some DLC and future payments for the rest of the extra content.

For Anthem, players are hoping that all DLC will be included. Reddit user OzTheGreat2020 put it the way other players are likely thinking: “I’m cool with a season pass, but it should cover all of the DLC.”

5. Flight

With the trailer and a majority of screenshots showing Javelins zipping through the sky, players are hoping for a decent focus on this feature of the exosuits. There are some who’ve said they hope the suits allow for unlimited flight and no need to refuel. Dark Void is a good example of the flight mechanics people are looking for in Anthem. There was no need to refuel the flying device, and players stopped flying when their feet touched the ground.

Anthem Story

Anthem takes place on a distant planet from earth, that has been populated by humans, but unfortunately they aren’t doing so well. A combination of natural and environmental factors has led to a very hostile living situation, and it is up to the player, known as a “Freelancer” to help protect the citizens of the walled city of Fort Tarsus. The player will use a powerful exosuit known as a Javelin to traverse the hostile terrain, running missions and uncovering story elements as they explore the lush wilderness around them.

There will be a large variety of enemies you will encounter in the world of Anthem, some of them peaceful and some very, VERY hostile. Let’s file this one in the “hostile” category.

Anthem Release Date

Although originally slated for a late 2018 release, Bioware has recently pushed this date back to 2019, with industry insiders stating it will most likely be released sometime around March of next year.

Anthem will be released a mostly third person action RPG along the lines of other Bioware games focusing on story driven exploration and combat. It runs on the always beautiful Frostbite Engine and will be split between third person perspective while outside the quest HUB cities, and first person while inside. It has been described by Bioware general manager Aaron Flynn as “science fantasy” in the same vein as Star Wars and Marvel’s collective universe. Anthem will allow players to group up with friends in order to run their missions, making this a more multiplayer focused title than many of Bioware’s other IP’s with the exception of Star Wars The Old Republic.

The player will presumably be able to customize their various Javelin exosuits in order to travel the world and engage in third person shooter combat. The overworld that has been shown so far has been a dense, lush jungle filled with natural monster type predators, as well as humanoid enemies with weapons. Each Javelin will have it’s own playstyle, allowing players to take on a role in combat. The Ranger plays as a jack of all trades while the Colossus is more of the large tank-style powerhouse. The Javelin will be able to traverse the air through flight, run exceptionally fast on the ground, and even propel itself through water for underwater exploration.

Although there will be a heavier emphasis on combat than previous Bioware titles, they game’s developer has stated that the game will still have a heavy emphasis on story and character development. Anthem has a traditional xp-based leveling system, as well as weapon loot drops similar to Bungie’s shared world shooter, Destiny. The player will accept missions from quest givers back in Fort Tarsus as well as participate in dynamic world events with other players. They can either do this solo, or with other players as current gameplay videos have shown a shared world, where players can drop in and drop out of one anothers games. Currently there are some questions regarding if there are going to be other multiplayer modes, such as PVP, however the developers have avoided answering those outside the scope of the current gameplay video which only shows 4 player co-op.

Regardless of what Javelin you choose, one thing is for certain: you are going to look awesome while flying around.

Anthem News

Anthem was originally announced at E3 2017 and was immediately met with anticipation from both game fans and developers. It is being designed from the ground up as a game that can be played “for the next decade” according to the developers and as such there is a sense that Bioware is going all in on it’s new IP. This is partly due to the fact that Bioware’s last game, Mass Effect Andromeda was both a critical and commercial flop, and many attribute this to Bioware being bought by EA.That combined with the disappointment and hostility created by some of EA’s recently launched Star Wars Battlefront II and it’s loot box system, means that there is a mounting pressure both for EA and Bioware to get this game right.

Work began on Anthem late in 2012, and production has ramped up over the last two years with the majority of staff at both Bioware’s Edmonton and Austin studios primarily focused on the new game. Although there have been a few eyebrow raising departures at Bioware since Anthem was announced, there are still some high profile names attached to the project, such as Casey Hudson (project director of the Mass Effect franchise) and Mark Darrah (executive producer of the Dragon Age games).

Overall, it seems that everyone realizes that Anthem is going set a very important tone for both EA and Anthem going forward. Luckily, Bioware and EA seem to be acutely aware of this fact, and are doubling down to make sure they get it right. With the title being delayed until 2019 one thing is for sure: there is still plenty of analysis and news to come between now and Anthem’s much anticipated launch.
