[Top 10] Biggest Anime Events in the World (Ranked)

Anime is a brilliantly shining star in a world where some people just need the escape. The great news is that there are events all around the world that people of like minds can gather, where some small gatherings are at local libraries, and some are extraordinary convention centers packed to the brim with crazy cosplays and just about a million mystery grab bags.

One could argue that other anime events include release events or in some cases, re-release events, and I agree wholeheartedly with whoever that ‘one’ is. In this article, I’ll go over the biggest anime events in the entire world, in order from smallest to biggest.

10. Ghibli Fest, USA

Ghibli Fest is a nationwide reshowing of Studio Ghibli films. The event lasts eight months and shows Studio Ghibli’s most loved movies. A reshowing of classic tales that gives fans who grew up on Ghibli local access through Fathom-supported theaters for a reasonable price.

Cost of admittance:

$15.00 for adults
$12.00 for kids’ tickets

In some locations, tickets cost $12.50

Ghibli fest is a great way to bring a geeky family together for an outing and introduce the next generation to the movies that raised us to be who we are unapologetically. Ghibli Fest 2022 is currently in full swing, and the next batch of showings is in August, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Only Yesterday. Great for people on vacation in August and are looking for something to do.

If you want to go to the film that is most likely to blow your socks off, look no further than Ghibli fest 2022’s showing of Spirited Away. Having won so many awards, being the highest-grossing film in Japan and having the highest rating on IMDB it’s really no surprise. If you’ve been there, done that, go for Ponyo or Howl’s Moving Castle. It’s hard to go wrong with the entire lineup this year, honestly.

9. AniManGaki, Malaysia

Looking for a fun time with Idol magic and awesome cosplay competitions? AniManGaki has you covered. The price of admission is absolutely worth it, as long as you live in Malaysia, otherwise, plane tickets might set you back. Looking at the different admissions we can see that spending the extra money on the Super Gaki Pack, which has so much awesomeness I just might need to fly down myself. Here's the tickets, prices and what they give you:

With all this stuff, I have to wonder how they can afford to practically give these tickets away. The event hit its highest mark last year at 20,000 attendees, which is probably the reason they can provide the tickets at the price they do. Your attendance should be determined by how good the accommodations nearby will be and the cost of the ticket. If you plan on doing some illegal stuff…. don’t. Whatever it is, it can wait till you're off foreign soil.

Lest we forget that the event this year is pirate themed, pack your One Piece cosplay, and be ready to see a couple of Luffys and cry over some Aces. Don’t forget your log pose.

8. Smash!, Australia

Smash! is Australia’s largest anime convention, and 2022 was a big year. The celebrity lineup included a multitude of British and Australian Anime Youtubers, including The Anime Man, CDawgVA, Sydsnap, Gigguk, and many hololive Vtubers. The event lasted one weekend, and tickets are as follows:

The event has a delightful number of extra parts to it, and here are some of the best ones!

Get creative and have fun with the arts and crafts area, set aside for Edward Elric size folks and Alphonse Elric Size people alike.
The Catwalk is a place to show off all the hard work you put into your cosplay as well as get support from your fellow cosplay enthusiasts as you take to the stage with poise and prowess!
Show off your hard work with an art competition that is sure to showcase many brilliant and chuckle-worthy pieces
A gaming section is all the extroverted introvert needs to settle in and kick some butt. With top-of-the-line PCs and plenty of games to satisfy your need to dominate, go crazy. Just don’t break any keyboards, they might not like that.
Karaoke is the stuff of dreams… or was it nightmares? That depends on your sense of humor. If you want to wail like a banshee to anime opening songs, go straight for it, and don’t hesitate to go banshee mode at the One Punch Man season one theme.
I can't believe it took this long to tell you about the maid cafe! For a little bit of a price, cosplay maids will serve some tasty drinks and treats while you and your friends rest your feet. Have your fun, just remember not to have the bad kinda fun… they will get the spray bottle.
YU-GI-OH, POKEMON, AND MAGICK OH MY! Trust me, this is gonna be cool. With trading card game free play, bring your best deck and wipe out the competition. If you’re feeling like you’ve got the skill, head into the tournament and sweep the floor with the competition. Don’t forget your Grand Abolisher.
Test your knowledge in trivia, battle it out for the top spot in the anime world, and destroy the competition!

All in all, this is a giant convention with a ton to do, and only three days to do it. Pack your wallet tight and journey into the valley of the beast to wade through a sea of like-minded anime fans.

7. Hatsune Miku Expo, Worldwide

This worldwide concert tour is amazingly well made, with the hologram Hatsune Miku taking on the stage in a way that only a hologram could, with blinding lights emanating from the crowd’s souvenir glow sticks and people from all over the world gathering for these events that occur… all over the world.

The lights that project across the stage and through the fog are brilliant and awe-inspiring, as they travel across the stage in sweeping motions that are only overshadowed by Hatsune Miku’s movements, as Idolish as she can get.

If you love anime, there's a big chance you used to or still do love Hatsune Miku and the Vocaloid crew. If so, this could be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, depending on your budget, as tickets range from $80 to $300 depending on the experience you want from the show.

Going worldwide, from Indonesia to Los Angeles it’ll be hard to miss a show with the excuse of ‘she didn’t get to my country’.

6. Hyper Japan Festival, U.K.

Hyper Japan Festival has made its return, garnering 30,000 attendees over its 3-day span. It is an otaku’s dreamland, with cosplays everywhere, artists’ alleys, and many many delicious delicacies. Seriously, if there’s one thing to check out, it’s the amazing food court at this convention.

The event has earned a bit of a name for itself, the weeaboos dreamland, as 99% of attendees are not Japanese, but the event aims to absolutely show off the dreamiest parts of Japanese culture. Try as I might, I can't stop thinking about the karaage there!

5. Anime Expo, USA

This is the big one in America, an absolute doorbuster with people bustling to get in and tickets selling out in minutes. I think I can see why, with events and attractions filling in Los Angeles’ best convention center to the brim. With the average pass, you can get one day access for $40-$60, and that's alright, but for the 4 day pass, you’ll have to be willing to shell out up to $160 per person, which can get a bit pricey for those of us who have other expenses.

If you get that premium goodness, one could argue it is worth the price, with things like a premium grab bag, priority admission to panels, and access to the Exhibit halls one day early. I am not one of those that argue this. The premium price is ridiculous compared to what you can get at smaller cons for much less. Maybe it’s all just paying for the name.

If you decide that this premium experience is for you, get ready for some cool events such as:

AMV Competitions
Masquerade events
A Maid Cafe
And to subvert expectations, a Butler Cafe

All this sounds awesome, but what we all think to attend for are the Exhibition halls, artist alleyways, and the overwhelming number of amazing cosplays. Remember to look, not touch.

4. Japan Expo, France

Japan Expo in Paris is arguably one of the biggest anime events in the world, if not for the bad times taking their toll on returnee attendance, it likely would be the biggest outside of Japan. In 2022 the expo is back into the fray and going strong with a lot of awesome ticket types ready for great days. Let’s go through the tickets and what they’ll give you for the money!

A plain Thursday ticket goes for 22 euros, discounted is 21.25 euro
A plain Friday ticket is 20 euros, discount is 19 euro
The plain Saturday ticket goes for 30 euros, discount is 28.50 euro
The plain Sunday ticket goes for 25 euros, discount is 23.50 euro
The plain 4 day pass goes for 77 euro, discounted is 73.25 euro
The star passes don’t give access to the festivities, but star pass zone finals for the ECG at 20 euros for foreigners and 10 euros for French citizens, and 25 euros for the weekend pass
The zen pass starts at 120 euros and gives priority and early access as well as unlimited re-entry to the event. The upgraded version, zen pass+ comfort gives you storage at the checkroom and exclusive expo goodies and is 216 euro.

And oh my gosh that was a lot of info, but wow, somehow it seems much more worthwhile than Anime Expo in the US. Let's take a look at some events next!

There are about two pages worth of more stuff, all of which is steeped in Japanese Culture, from traditional arts to new age events, there is Japanese running through the veins of Japan Expo. The cost of admission is pretty hefty, but if you ask me, paying for a vacation to Paris during the time of Japan Expo and not attending would be an otaku sin.

3. Itasha Tengoku, Japan

This one might seem weird to include towards the top, but anyone who knows the anime scene in and out knows the anime-based obsession with Itasha (Painful Car). Literally decorating your beautiful sports car with an anime and game character wrap, basically making it a walking advertisement in the otaku’s language. Itasha is growing in Japan and making its way towards America surprisingly quickly, with itasha showing up at conventions around the USA pretty consistently.

This event is the epicenter, a car show to cringe at, or maybe to stand in awe of. General entry tends to sit at 1,500 yen or about $15 and has a massive lot of cars, events, and special guests to keep a person occupied. It tends to also be a congregation spot for rockabilly types, something awesome to see!

2. Anime Japan, Japan

Anime Japan just needed to be on this list, and it took a lot of digging to not put it on top. It is oftentimes considered the heaven otakus go to after saving enough of their meager income. Hard work and dedication come in all forms, but in this expo, it is shown through the staff's dedication to keeping the event in line.

Rowdy crowds offset by the awe of being at the greatest event of the year, and cosplays so complex that flash photography could be dangerous. This is it, you've gotten to Japan and made it to the top. Let's check out what you paid to get in the door.

You got the premium ticket. Ultimate access and super cool lottery prizes. You paid about $370, and you don’t regret a penny of it. Your cousin paid 5,000 yen, about $45, and got a lottery and some goods without unlimited access.

The cheapest ticket costs your dad 1,900 yen, about $14 and your brother forgot to buy his ticket ahead of time and paid the onsite price of 2,300 yen, or about $17. They all severely underpaid compared to you, but you’ve been saving all year for this, and you aren’t about to spare any expense or luggage space.

1. Comiket, Japan

With 750,000 attendees in 2019, can AnimeJapan even compare to Comiket, the anime and manga lover’s paradise? It's about time I show you the wondrous world of anime and manga and its true heaven, a place where otaku and weeaboo converge, where cultures across the world join hands and worship the art that brings us all joy. In all seriousness, I can't express how amazing this event is.

After gaining recognition early on as an event by the fans for the fans, it has grown into what some might call the king of anime conventions. The level of skill and effort put into the sheer brilliance displayed in each cosplay, the booths of artists sharing their dreams, and the comradery a person feels with all the people around them, no matter their cultural background is astounding.

Try if you might, to picture this, a sea of cosplays floods the streets, vendors line the walls and food is prominent. Even across town, you see people in cosplay heading towards the epicenter, Tokyo Big Sight.

If you are going to admire everything, and not in cosplay, a meager 700 yen, about $5

And if you plan to cosplay, you pay about 3,500 yen, or about $32. This is all in light of the pandemic, in a large effort to keep numbers down.

The hopes for the future are that at the end of the pandemic, the event will go back to being completely free. Comiket has always been a place for independent mangaka to spread their art and stories, and gain exposure in the big world of manga. At its peak, it was the brilliant, shining star of the anime and manga world.

Held in the Nipponbashi neighborhood of Osaka, the Nipponbashi (Also spelled "Nihonbashi") Street Festa is Japan's largest cosplay event. If crowds and more crowds of cosplayers parading down the street are what you want, this is the event for you.

What's awesome about this event:

⦁ If you get tired of walking in the parades, Nipponbashi has many Maid cafes

⦁ Nipponbashi is famous for its fan, or "Otaku" culture. The Festa has many fans looking to buy or trade merchandise, as well as stores selling anime-related merchandise

5. Toyako Manga Anime Festa

A real-life hot springs episode

The Toyako Manga Anime Festa, or TMAF for short, is held on Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido. What is unusual about TMAF is that it's not only held outdoors, but in a hot spring resort, or “onsen”.

What's awesome about this event:

⦁ While most anime conventions in Japan restrict the cosplaying to a few areas, at TMAF there are no restrictions on where cosplay can be done

⦁ An exhibition of Itasha, or cars that are decorated with pictures of anime characters

⦁ Cosplay isn't limited to people attending the convention, even the people who work at local stores and restaurants get dressed up

4. C3 Anime Festival Asia Tokyo

Come and play with them!

In addition to its Tokyo show, the C3AFA also happens in other countries, most notably Singapore. C3AFA comes from the 2017 merger of two conventions, C3 and Anime Festival Asia.

What's awesome about this event:

⦁ The I Love Anisong concert runs every day of the convention, bringing dozens of anime-themed Japanese pop groups

⦁ Video game tournaments, including Smash Bros. and Tetris Effect. C3AFA also offers gaming sessions with guest cosplayers

3. Anime Japan

While it's more of a consumer show than the anime conventions in the U.S., Anime Japan is dedicated to putting anime front and center.

2. Niconico Chokaigi

The power of the anime and memes is OVER NINE THOUSAND!!!!

Niconico Chokaigi is a celebration of internet culture held starting in 2012 by the Japanese social media and live-streaming site Niconico. Because Niconico is based around social media, audience participation is encouraged.

What's awesome about this event:

⦁ Niconico Chokaigi comes with a haunted house based on a different theme every year. The house has its own live stream, where Niconico users can participate in the scary shenanigans

⦁ Live music, not just from popular music groups, but any fan with an instrument can join in the fun

⦁ Kabuki theater performances, which have featured digital stars such as Hatsune Miku

1. Comiket

The biggest anime convention has lots of cosplay

Comiket is short for "comic market." It's the largest anime/manga convention in the world, and a huge market for Japanese manga, both commercially published and self-published works, also known as "doujinshi". It attracts over half a million fans twice a year.

What's awesome about this event:

⦁ Comiket has been going on since 1975, meaning it's catered to multiple generations of fans

⦁ It has 35,000 self-publishing groups, or circles, with even more applying

⦁ The list of works available for sale at Comiket is big enough that the printed version is hundreds of pages thick

The United Kingdom is a country with a rich past and fascinating traditions. Among those traditions is one adopted from Japan: Anime. The U.K has many anime conventions, some of which are specifically themed, others are more all-purpose. Here is a list of some of the biggest ones.

5. Animangapop

Cosplaying, anime, and video games? Sign me up!

Animangapop, which started out as Plymouth Anime & Comic Expo, is a two-day convention based in (of course) Plymouth, however, it is expanding into other cities, such as Glasgow, Newport, and Brighton. One might say that the Animanga is popping

What's awesome about this event:

⦁ Animangapop is sponsored by Sega of Europe and has run tournaments based on time trials of Sonic Mania

⦁ The con's organizers have successfully made several interviews of popular bands, such as Aidoloxxxy and Listen Flavor. They have also interviewed their own organizers for a peek at what happens behind the scenes

Anime conventions are a popular source of entertainment for geeks. The chance to bond with fellow fans, look for cool merchandise, or see your favorite celebrity is what draws us to these cons. Here is a look at some of the ten biggest conventions, picked by peak capacity.

10. Anime Matsuri, United States

Anime Matsuri 2019 Recap

Anime Matsuri is held in Houston, Texas, and is the second-largest anime convention in America. While recent controversies have cut the total attendees down from 40,000 attendees in 2018 to 29,000 in 2019, as of this writing it is still one of the most popular anime conventions in the United States.

What's unique about this event:

What's unique about this event:

⦁ Japan Expo has its own currency. Called "Jens," as a play on the word "yen," this fictional currency can be earned through activities, and spent at the Jens shop. Jens won't expire and can be used next time

You might have already heard of this one. Comiket, short for "Comic Market," is the largest anime and manga convention in the world, bringing in over 750,000 fans, aspiring artists, and cosplayers in 2019. That's more than half a million people for those of you that, like me, stink at math. Comiket is Japan's largest indoor public gathering.

What's unique about this event:

⦁ Comiket's main attraction is manga, and it's the best place to pick up self-published works called "Doujinshi"

⦁ Comiket is held twice a year, in August and December. Due to the sheer number of fans coming in, the lines can reach up to an hour long

⦁ Because manga uses a lot of paper, Comiket sponsors a woodlands conservation donation drive, raising the equivalent of approximately half a million U.S. dollars

What makes a good anime convention?

Anime conventions are a great chance to find new friends, to explore new fandoms, and to experience how bad over a thousand geeks in one place can smell. The best of these cons can leave you wishing that they'd never end. Here's my list of the top ten anime conventions in the U.S.

10. Otakon

Otakon's 2020 costume contest

One of the biggest anime conventions in the east, the Washington DC-based Otakon has been going strong since the mid 1990s and going strong ever since. Otakon gets a place on this list because it had more guests, in both the anime and the music industry than any other convention I've seen.

What's awesome about this event:

⦁ Otakon is run by fans for fans, using volunteers for the non-profit organization Otakorp

⦁ Their annual Pokemon tournament, the Portable Kaiju Super Battle League, has been run for over three years

⦁ Otakon is celebrating indie game developers by creating an area to showcase independently produced games

⦁ You can learn to sew plushies, paint, and other new skills at workshops and the Otakon Makerspace

If you're in Los Angeles in the summer, Anime Expo (or AX for short) is worth looking into. It is one of, if not the biggest anime conventions in the U.S., and it was founded not just to celebrate anime, but Japanese culture and art. This dedication to its roots earns it a spot here.

⦁ AX takes an academic look at anime and manga with the AX Anime and Manga Studies Symposium

⦁ AX offers portfolio review sessions for aspiring artists to get feedback on their work

⦁ Want to play on that old system that nobody else has? The E-gaming area has TVs set up so that you can bring and set up your console from home

⦁ If you need advice on how to make a better cosplay, the Cosplay Sempais are right next to the cosplay repair shop

8. Sakura-Con

Set in sweet Seattle

The Pacific Northwest's oldest anime convention, Sakura-Con is another non-profit "by fans for fans" volunteer-run con. Sakura-Con's appeal comes from its programming, covering all aspects of fandom and the anime industry

What's awesome about this event:

⦁ Sakura-Con offers the Wired Rooms, the largest gaming space in the Pacific Northwest, for gaming of all types

⦁ If you're into making models, you can build a mini-mecha at the Mecha Modeling Room, and maybe even win a prize for it

⦁ The Obake Bash dance has over a dozen bands, so you can show off your cool (and maybe some not so cool) dance moves

Anime Central, also known as ACen, has been happening only a short drive from Chicago since 1998. It's on this list because of its focus on the animation industry. t was founded by the Midwest Animation Promotion Society.

⦁ Kit's Kids Club offers hands-on and off panels designed to teach any 14-year-old and under who's accompanied by an adult about Japan, cosplay, and geekiness

⦁ The video programming offers multiple rooms for different genres, including shojo, shonen, dubbed anime, and fan-made videos.

6. Anime Weekend Atlanta

Fashion, cosplay, and pumpkins. What's not to love?

Anime Weekend Atlanta (or AWA for short) is known for being one of the best places to watch anime music videos, which is my favorite thing to do at cons. That gives it a spot here.

What's awesome about this event:

⦁ Always into setting trends, AWA has been running their fashion show since 2018. They also offer the Fashion Tea Party where con-goers can ask questions and interact with the designers and models

⦁ Anyone can participate in anime music video editing through the Video Art Thunderdome. This multi-editor project "allows attendees an opportunity to compete in a true community event with and against friends at the convention"

⦁ You can get to know your favorite characters better through the Ask an Anime Character event

⦁ The Starlight Idol Festival is a chance for anyone who can sing and dance to take the stage

5. Fanimecon

Fanimecon, based in San Jose, is billed as "Northern California’s largest anime convention". It offers a broad range of gaming, anime, and cosplay events, as well as panels celebrating and educating in Japanese fashion. The cosplay events are what give Fanimecon its awesomeness.

What's awesome about this event:

⦁ The Cosplay Photo Scavenger Hunt is a chance to win prizes by finding certain cosplayers and taking pictures of them, with permission of course

⦁ If you wanted to play video games but didn't have space to pack your controller, you can rent not only a controller but games to play

⦁ All singers are encouraged to take part in the Karaoke contests, including the Ultimate Karaoke Fighting Championship

⦁ Want to see more indie games? Fanimecon's got you covered with their indie games section where you can take a closer look at developing and finished games

4. A-Kon

Cosplay and fish. Double the awesome

A-Kon takes place in Dallas, lasting four days. It's North America's longest-running anime convention, starting in 1990, and including a huge list of guests who have been there. Dozens of voice actors, industry people, singers, and bands earn A-Kon the spot on this list.

What's awesome about this event:

⦁ The Cold Read pits guest voice actors against a script they've never seen before. Expect lots of laughs

⦁ If you have some extra money to spare or are feeling charitable, you can buy a ticket to the Charity Banquet with the Stars. You can meet the guests, and maybe win prizes

⦁ A-Kon offers many video game tournaments for popular games with prizes

3. Youmacon

A Halloween party for anime lovers

Michigan's largest anime convention, Youmacon has a horror-inspired theme because of its name which comes from the Japanese word for "demon" or "ghost" and because of its timing, taking place around Halloween. The spooky four-day convention will send chills down your spine.

What's awesome about this event:

⦁ The Youma Idol contest gives twelve lucky people a chance to show off their Japanese singing skills.

1. Anime Boston

Just be careful when you drive there, you might find yourself dodging the T.A.R.D.I.S.

Okay, I'm biased towards Anime Boston. Not only was it my first anime con, but it was also my first big one. AB started in 2003, and my only regret is not going for the first two years. I've been going every year since.

What's awesome about this event:

⦁ Anime Boston has a theme for each year and revolves its programming around it. Shogun, sports, heroes, and retro have all been themes in past years

⦁ If you're feeling heroic, AB runs a blood drive every year. It's for a good cause!

⦁ Anime Unscripted, based off the improv TV show "Whose Line is it Anyway?" puts four of the voice-acting guests into some very ludicrous situations

⦁ The Cosplay Death Match is a popularity contest where the winner is chosen through the audience's cheering. Expect to see a lot of awesome interactions between the participants
