[Top 7] Summer Time Rendering Best Girls

Every time we watch an anime, a show or play a game, we instinctively select the 'best.' Whether it be episode number, plot twists, or characters, we want to rank them. But there’s a special sub-group under characters that’s become quite popular of late. Of course I’m talking about the crown of the ‘Best Girl’.

Before moving forward, I want to clarify the subtle difference between ‘Best Female Character’ and ‘Best Girl’. The first one is where we try to be objective and pick out the most well written character. For the ‘Best Girl’ or ‘Best Boy’ category, it comes down to who we love the most. Now that that’s cleared up, expect a heap of subjectivity.

On a side note, I won’t be doing a ‘Best Boy’ list for obvious reasons. First, it’s Shinpei, and you know it. Second, his only competitors would be Sou and Nezu. Who else would even make the cut?

7. Hiruko

Putting her at the end of the list basically means one thing. Hiruko is not the best girl. As a character, she’s fine. But she ranks second to absolute worst, that being Shide. This is the same person who killed Ushio! She’s kind of the worst!

While I’m not trying to deny the malice we see in her, there are certain aspects of her that can be seen in a sympathetic light. She had been adrift in space and then the ocean, alone and hungry for a long time. And while she is a murderous cult leader of sorts, her motivation comes from a very simple place. All she wanted was to spend eternity with her loved ones.

6. Haine

While the show uses Haine's name to refer to the Mother of Shadows, I'm using this entry to specifically refer to Hiruko's Haine personality. Whereas Hiruko is bloodthirsty, hungry and malicious, Haine is all sweetness and light. In the words of Hizuru, she “was a lonely little girl who just wanted to be spoiled”.

Haine is just a cute girl who gets excited over eating sweets. Her shyness is apparent from her reaction to Hizuru’s friends, and later when she meets Shinpei at Tokoyo. We see her emotional and childish nature when we see her cry over the villagers who died of starvation. During the last fight, it’s a final push from her that helps Shinpei. And the best thing is in the good ending timeline, we get to see her as Ryuunosuke’s child.

5. Mio Kofuku

Mio is kind-of a central character. During the first arc, she’s centrally placed as the person who has to be protected. During the loops, her death not only signifies the point of no return, it’s also used as a device to emotionally torture Shinpei. And even after the scope of the show expands, she remains important to all the characters.

There’s a lot to like about Mio. She’s sweet and easily loveable. Even though she has many insecurities and sees herself as unable to escape her sister's shadow, she never harbors ill will toward Ushio. And when her feelings for Shinpei are rejected by him, she takes it in stride. She's pretty cool in that regard, but she's pretty boring otherwise.

4. Tokiko Hishagata

For such an awesome character, we don’t get a lot of material. We know she has both gentle and fierce sides to her personality. On one hand, she’s dirtied her hands while serving and feeding the Mother of Shadows. On the other hand, after switching sides she relentlessly fights against the shadows. In one loop, we even see her take Shide on until he lethally wounds her.

The short version is Tokiko is not someone you take lightly. Regardless of the side she’s on, she does things properly and achieves results. Even though her crush on Mio is never returned, she only shows affection for all the other characters. And while she’s not the most formidable fighter, she isn’t someone you underestimate.

3. Mio Kofuku’s Shadow

Mio’s shadow is everything Mio is not. She’s almost always calm and methodical, to the point of being cold. Unlike the original, she is upfront and somewhat confrontational. She's also a shadow, which means she's deadly in a fight.

While they might seem different, they’re still the same person. Her confrontations with Mio do serve a purpose. As a shadow, she only has 7 days to live, and she wants to see her original to express her true feelings. In fact, it’s because of her that get to understand Mio.

2. Ushio Kofuku

What, you thought I’d put Ushio at number one? Don’t get me wrong, I love her, but I believe someone else is more deserving of the throne. But enough of that; let's get to Ushio's best qualities.

Ushio, in a nutshell, is a ray of sunshine. Headstrong, loud, and spontaneous are three words that I associate with her. There's never a dull moment with her, as she manages to smile and make us smile even through the darkest of times. And when it seems like she died, it hits us hard.

Part of why she's so loveable is her fierce love and protectiveness for everyone. Just like Shinpei, she keeps fighting against insurmountable odds because she does not want to lose to people around her. She's the kind of person who would never abandon anyone. Even without a life threatening situation, we see her caring nature as she volunteers to keep the beaches clean.

While she is always quick to act, we see that she isn't thoughtless. She's actually quite good at quick thinking, always adapting and improvising. This makes her a great strategist and an even capable fighter. The irony is that despite being dead and powerful, she is still scared of ghosts.

1. Hizuru Minakata

If you got this far, you’ve already figured out that I’d put Hizuru at the top. Hizuru stands out among all the characters, not just the girls. Part of it might be her older age and the maturity that brings, but we know that she’s been what she is since she was a kid.

We can tell she is intuitive and rational based on her demeanor and actions. Despite her limitations, her guesses and predictions are almost always spot on. Her rational roots allow her to rein in the intuitive and speculative side of her. In comparison to the younger and inexperienced Shinpei, who can lose sight due to empathy and curiosity, she is much more level-headed.

Despite these differences, she never comes across as cruel or emotionless. Even as a child, she showed a lot of patience and tenderness when she befriended Haine. Fourteen years later, she cries in secret to grieve the deaths of those who have been murdered, showing us empathy. And even though her goal is to stop Hiruko and mainly Shide, deep down she wants to save everyone.

What really makes her unique is her core motivation, revealed during her last conversation with Shide. She considers herself responsible for Ryunosuke’s death, a burden she’s borne for fourteen years. As a rational thinker, she doesn’t harbor ideals of justice or redemption. From her point of view, it’s just something that needs to be done to save everyone else.

10. Kurama

Kurama is a famous pop star who is secretly a crow tengu. He becomes very interested in Nanami when he finds out she’s a land god. He tries to manipulate her into being with him so he can eat her and earn her power but is stopped by Tomoe. When Nanami is (too kind) enough to forgive him, he becomes invested in her to be with her and earn her power, but he still keeps her by his side. Kurama is probably my least favorite character. I don’t necessarily despise him, but he’s my least favorite character. I find him to be creepy and a big baby and disrespectful. Also, he’s enrolled in a high school, but…he’s…28. (Note: this is according to the show’s Wikipedia, so I cannot confirm this with total certainty)

Why we love Kurama:

- Kurama is a dramatic baby, and I think it’s hilarious.

- Way he uses his fame to get Nanami out of bad situations when yokai nonsense happens at their school

- When Tomoe turned him into an ostrich, and he feared for his life for being a creep. Muahahaha.

Look at them, trying to cute-ify a PREDATOR.

9. Akura-Ou

Akura-Ou is a fascinating villain. When we first see him, we get an Akura-Ou that is loud, brazen, bloodthirsty, and downright murderous. He has no filter or any care or consideration for anyone other than himself. By the time we adequately meet him with Nanami, he’s disguised as a human with his human body trapped in the underworld. By this point in the story, he is calmer, and while still deadly and cruel, he’s motivated and now has a direction. I put Akura-Ou over Kurama because I like his character much better. He felt like a character written with something other than just “I want Nanami.”

What we love about Akura-Ou:

- Akura is a pretty man. That is all.

- His obsession with Tomoe convinced me that he was in love with him. I wouldn’t be surprised.

- He’s a good villain! I feel like Inuyasha is a similar show, and I feel like Akura-Ou is a much better villain than someone like Naraku. Naraku feels like he just wants to cause chaos and destroy their lives. Meanwhile, Akura-Ou’s just trying to get his body back and mess up Tomoe’s life.

8. Narukami

I don’t care for Nurakami in general, but I found the episode very enjoyable, and what she did for Nanami and Tomoe by proxy! Narukami is a lightning god who feels that she deserves to take over the Mikage shrine, despite Mikage’s desire for Nanami to take it over. She’s selfish and insensitive and even turns Tomoe into a child because he refuses to become her familiar.

Why we love Narukami:

- I really like her design! The little details look excellent! She reminds me of a thunderstorm!

- Her Will-o-the-wisps are so stinking cute!

- She gives us the gift of seeing baby Tomoe.

7. Mizuki

Mizuki is a white snake and a former familiar of the peach blossom goddess. He first meets Nanami when she saves him from being attacked at her school and decides she will become his wife for showing him kindness. He kidnaps her and reveals he’s exceptionally lonely because he lost his goddess but is still obsessed with the idea of Nanami being his wife and him taking care of her. While Mizuki was a HUGE creep the first few times we met him, he did get better. He’s still a jerk to Tomoe and a bit selfish, but he’s also a goofball. (Insert - him and his little flute) He’s below Otohiko for me because of…well…the casual kidnapping. But, I want to have him closer towards the middle because you grow to love him.

Why we love Mizuki:

- He has some good personal growth

- He takes the time to figure out what Nanami needs as a friend and protects her

- His little flute

6. Otohiko

Otohiko is a wind god who seems to be very close to Mikage. We see him watching over Nanami after she takes over the shrine and interacting with Mikage as he watches over Nanami as well. He’s flamboyant, flashy, and sassy, and while he is also selfish and can be quite a jerk to Nanami, I think there’s an underlying reason for it. He also fits that 2010s anime-era stereotype of a very stereotypically flamboyant gay man, but he definitely serves.

Why we love Otohiko:

- He’s fabulous. I wish I could put that much care and effort into my appearance.

- He’s sassy. I wish I could be that quick-witted!

- He cares very deeply about Mikage. I think that’s the underlying reason for his dislike of Nanami. That’s likely just a personal theory, though.

I repeat - slay queen

5. Kotetsu & Onikiri

Onikiri and Kotetsu are the absolute cutie-patootie will-o-the-wisps who live in the shrine and serve the god of the said shrine. The two are cowardly and not very strong but are very sweet and genuinely care about Nanami. They make her feel welcomed and loved, even when she has her godhood taken by Narukami. They’re in the middle only because they’re support characters and aren’t given much to do, but I do love those little guys.

What we love about Kotetsu and Onikiri:

- They love Nanami! They want to be close to her and do what they can to help!

- They’re adorable and silly!

- Though they don’t do much in the show, they try to teach Nanami what they know and show her the ways of their world.

4. Ami Nekota

Ami Nekota is a naive and sweet girl in Nanami’s class and becomes one of her few friends. She also becomes one of the people that stands by Nanami when her classmates can become mean-spirited. She’s not much, but I would protect this little strawberry-colored chihuahua with every fiber in my being.

Why we love Ami:

- She’s a sweetie that saw the kindness and good in Nanami when basically none of their classmates did.

- She cares about Nanami and her well-being. Even when there were ghosts, and she had no idea how to fight them, she was willing to go in kicking and crying in fear to protect her friend.

- She’s adorable! She’s built like a poorly-written shonen female character, but she’s a good friend that really looks out for her buddy and sticks up for her! We love that for her!

3. Mamoru

Mamoru is Nanami’s shikigami gifted to her by Otohiko. He’s her helper spirit that also helps grow her spiritual abilities. He usually appears as a monkey but also can take the form of a little boy.

What we love about Mamoru:

- Look at his little face! He’s just a cutie patootie!

- He sees Nanami as a mother figure & we love that she gets to raise and protect her tiny spirit monkey son.

- He’s a little mischief maker.

I would give my life for this baby monkey.

2. Nanami

Nanami is the main protagonist of the story. She’s 17 and sadly left homeless because her POS father abandoned her with all his gambling debts. She’s then gifted godhood by Mikage for showing him kindness and telling him her story. The show revolves around her working to become a better god and her romance with Tomoe. Usually, I would put a character like Nanami at the very top. But, I only hesitate because I don’t care for how some animes like Kamisama will make it, so the female protagonist always needs to be rescued.

Why we love Nanami:

- While I said that Nanami often needs to be rescued, she tries at least to save herself. She learns how to work her talismans and raise Mamoru. She fights back against those trying to hurt her. She knows how to gaslight, gatekeep, and girl boss out of a situation. She may not be the strongest, but she will still do her damnedest!

- She’s not afraid to call someone out on their bs. Like Mizuki and Kurama. The second Kurama gave her attitude, she told him to shove off straight up and didn’t go quietly when Mizuki first tried to kidnap her. She also calls Tomoe out for his bad attitude.

- She didn’t ask to be made a god but took it in stride. She’s still willing to make the most out of her situation and do her best. She’s grateful for a place to stay and friends to keep her company, and she really wants to help make sure the shrine survives and learns how to take care of it. The whole Kagura Dance/festival episode was a chance to show off how she cares and is growing as a god.

1. Tomoe

Tomoe is the fox yokai familiar of Mikage & later, Nanami. He was once a fierce demon who followed Akura-Ou, joining in on his violent tirades. He was eventually mollified by the human woman, Yukiji, and then the god Mikage. He ultimately falls in love with Nanami, who takes Mikage’s place as a god.

Why we love Tomoe:

- He’s voiced by J. Michael Tatum, who is, without a doubt, my favorite anime voice actor and has an utterly phenomenal voice.

- He’s a sassy lad. He’s got attitude & is not afraid to show it.

- He would move heaven and earth for the girl he loves and respects her boundaries.

15. Nanami meets Tomoe

This is when Nanami realizes that Mikage’s kindness was not necessarily out of the goodness of his heart, and she’s gotten into a very sticky situation. We also meet the key figures that Nanami will be living within the shrine - Tomoe, Mikage’s familiar; Onikiri; and Kotetsu, a pair of yokai spirits that live in and help take care of the shrine and Nanami.

14. Nanami makes Tomoe her familiar

This whole mess introducing Nanami and Tomoe’s relationship comes in just the first episode! Nanami’s gotten into trouble, and Tomoe is being a smarmy brat, not wanting to help her unless she grovels to him. But Nanami is a bit of a stubborn brat herself, and she won’t do it. (Frankly, I don’t blame her) So she gets him to help in her way by sealing the contract and making him her familiar. Now, they’re stuck together.

13. Tomoe is mad at Nanami

Nanami wakes up fresh from a well-deserved night’s sleep to find that Tomoe has completely redecorated the shrine just for her. How sweet, right? Except, he’s not happy about it at all. Why? I would be pretty mad, too, if someone forced me to be their familiar and I had to do whatever they said. It’s funny watching him get so angry, though! Who’s a grumpy little fox? You are! You’re a grumpy little fox, Tomoe!

12. Tomoe turns Kurama into an ostrich

After Tomoe discovers that that asshole, Kurama, is a crow tengu, he confronts him to find out what he wants with sweet Nanami. That plan turns out to be him wanting to take a big ol’ bite out of her heart to become a land god. So how does Tomoe protect his beloved master? Well, obviously, he’s going to turn Kurama into an ostrich and roast him for dinner. Nothing is more expected than seeing a giant ostrich get chased by a ball of magic fox fire at school, right? But also, I don’t blame Tomoe for wanting ostrich for dinner. It’s delicious.

11. Tomoe saves Nanami from Mizuki

In almost every Shoujo I’ve seen, there’s at least one scene where the main character is nearly attacked before the love interest saves her. Though in certain ways, it gives me the ick; I can’t help swooning a bit when I see our lovebirds reunite, especially at this moment! The pure rage on Tomoe’s face and how he holds Nanami so protectively is enough to melt my cold little heart!

10. Nanami loses her godhood

I get anxious just watching her! I mean, this is a titular moment for the show! Without her godhood, what is Nanami’s role? What is she to do? Lord, can’t this poor girl get a break?

9. Little Tomoe is a menace

Even though he’s tiny, baby Tomoe is still an utter terror. It’s giving Shippo from Inuyasha, but with Tomoe's adult attitude. Although I think it would have been cuter to see full toddler Tomoe, it does warm my heart to watch him be a tiny menace to society and, more specifically, creepy Kurama.

8. Nanami and Tomoe go to the aquarium

After realizing she has a big ol’ crush on Tomoe (and who can blame her?) Nanami tries to take him on a date to the aquarium. Sadly for her, Tomoe is…well…less enthusiastic about it. Tomoe just doesn’t get it. Bless Nanami’s little heart.

7. The Mandatory Beach Episode

Of course, every Shoujo has a mandatory beach episode. I included the entire episode because they tend to be very memorable. (Ex. Ouran highschool host club’s infamous beach episode) Not to mention, we see Nanami as the one saving Tomoe instead of the other way around. I’m always down for badass girls being the saviors. Though I love a good Shoujo, they can be notorious for this trope. (*cough* Inuyasha *cough*)

6. Mizuki and his lil flute

My favorite thing is silly moments like this in animes. Look at this little dork and his silly little flute. He’s just doing his best and is happy to be there. You go, Mizuki. You wheeze on that flute.

5. Nanami performs the Kagura dance

After watching Nanami seriously struggle and do her damnedest to get this dance down, performing it so beautifully is incredibly satisfying! I’ve seen videos of Kagura dances, and I love their references to their movements. I also will always love the sound of those bells. It’s one of my favorite sounds.

4. Nanami gets a Shikigami

Nanami is determined to prove herself as a land god. We love seeing her so determined to prove herself and work hard. So, when Otohiko, our lovely flamboyant wind god (sadly, stereotypical gay men are a common trope in Shoujos), gives her a shikigami egg, we see Nanami doing the “egg baby” assignment in many a US teen show. But after a little accident, we meet the precious baby monkey, Mamoru. Look at that cutie patootie monkey!

3. Drunk Nanami

Despite Nanami being underage, it’s still pretty funny to see her getting drunk after eating a bunch of sake-infused buns. Plus, we get a babysitter Tomoe. Nanami’s such a silly goose.

2. Tomoe realizes he’s in love with Nanami

I feel like one of the things in Shoujo that’s almost as precious as that final reunion moment, where we get to see the couple get together, is when one or the other realizes they’re in love with each other. In this case, we’ve been waiting since the beginning for Tomoe to recognize the feelings he had for Nanami finally! The satisfaction this scene makes me feel.

1. Nanami and Tomoe reunite

I looove this moment! The whole reason we watch a shoujo is to get that satisfying moment when the couple finally gets together. Now, there are bad ones (*COUGH* OURAN HIGHSCHOOL HOST CLUB *COUGH) but this, thankfully for us fans, is not one of them. That kiss, that tender look they give each other, is an absolute chef’s kiss. It makes it all worth it in the end.

15. Ponyo

We’re starting simple with some Ghibli. Made as a retelling of the Little Mermaid, Ponyo is the story of a young goldfish, the daughter of a wizard and an ocean goddess. When she tries to go to the surface, she becomes the momentary pet of a little boy named Sosuke. She has to return to the ocean but is determined to return to her friend. Except, this time, she’s a human.

This “romance” isn’t so much about…well…romance. This is about a different kind of love - between two innocent kids exploring the world and growing up. It’s a perfect little watch for you, your kids (consider it an option for their first Ghibli movie!), or even a cute little date night. Then you can go into the tear-jerkers that Ghibli’s made!

Baby mermaid? Goldfish mermaid? Magic girl?

14. Violet Evergarden

Violet Evergarden is the story of a young woman who was trained to be a creature of war. She didn’t experience everyday life until after the war the country had her fight. The story follows her attempts to understand love and life. The catalyst to this was Major Gilbert - the man she was supposed to serve as a soldier but ended up pushing her to learn about life outside of war.

This anime is, indeed, a shoujo and is, indeed, technically a romance. I put it and Ponyo together because they’re a love of a different sort. The show does cover the love Violet shares with Gilbert but also goes into different kinds of love, like a love of life. Not exactly your typical romance.

13. Special A

Special A is the story of 2 kids, Hikari and Kei. They knew each other as kids, and Hikari considered Kei her rival in high school. The story follows Hikari trying to beat Kei in everything at their elite school, Hakusenkan. Though Hikari tries to beat Kei in everything, she doesn’t know that Kei is actually in love with her.

So this is an early 2010s style of anime that I feel most early anime fans recognize - a girl tries to be better than a guy but doesn’t know he’s actually in love with her. Those who have seen Kaichou wa Maid-sama (another anime I will discuss later) are familiar with this trope. I don’t dislike this anime, but if I choose between this or Maid-sama, I prefer maid-sama. I will also never fail to mention that I am old friends with the woman who translated the manga's English translation, so it still holds a special (more like special a) place in my heart.

12. Sailor Moon

This is the story of a young Japanese schoolgirl, Usagi Tsukino, who turns out to be the moon princess, Serenity. With the help of her cat companion, Luna, she helps to reawaken the rest of the reincarnated sailors, from Sailor Mercury to Sailor Neptune. Along the way, she also has to figure out the feelings of high schooler Mamoru (aka Tuxedo Mask).

So I didn’t grow up as a Sailor Moon fan. I was a Pokemon kid. But when I got older, I decided to get into Sailor Moon, and I’ve been hooked ever since. I still have my qualms, especially the LGBTQ+ erasure in the US show and the weird direction they took Chibiusa being jealous of her parents’ romance (?), but my love for it still stands. It is truly an icon in the world of shoujo anime.

11. Kaichou Wa Maid-Sama

Misaki, class president at Seika high, is on a mission! That mission? To clean up the reckless male student population of Seika high and protect the girls of the recently co-ed school. So what’s the problem? With Misaki’s tough-as-nails attitude, she’s constantly wary that someone from her school will find out she works part-time at a maid cafe. When popular boy Usui finds out her secret, Misaki is forced to start letting him into her life. But as this continues, she finds she’s beginning to fall for him.

I LOVED this show in high school! This was one of those animes that I think I rewatched at least once a semester. It’s a great show where I love Misaki and Usui. Like I said with Special A, it does follow a specific trope that was more common around the 2010s, but that doesn’t stop it from being a beloved show!

10. Fruits Basket

Tohru Honda is a young orphaned high schooler taken in by the mysterious Sohma family. She discovers the family’s underlying secret that when someone of the opposite gender hugs them, they transform into different animals of the Chinese Zodiac. Tohru has to keep her new friends’ secrets while also fighting her feelings between Yuki and Kyo.

This was the first “real” anime I watched at 12. I love this show so much. It’s so silly and sweet. Though I think Tohru’s personality was more reflective of early 2000s female characters in some shoujo, I still adore the show and Tohru. I want to wrap this poor girl up and protect her! There is now a remake that came out about four years ago which follows more closely to the manga, but I still adore both!

9. Nana

Nana is the story of 2 young women with the same name - Nana O. and Nana K. Nana O. is the member of a punk band and becomes close friends with Nana K. as the two find out they live in the same apartment building and begin to deal with their relationships within Nana O.’s band and their friendship.

Though this isn’t a lesbian anime, I have vivid memories of young anime lovers realizing their sexualities because of this anime because of the romantic chemistry between the two Nana’s. Also, don’t ask me why their limbs are so long. This was just kind of a thing in the early 2000s. I don’t know why?

Be aware: the show does deal with challenging themes like death and drug abuse, so if you are not up for subjects like that, I’d look into one of the more light-hearted options on this list.

8. Your Lie In April

Your Lie In April is the story of Kosei, a prodigy piano player who hasn’t touched the instrument since the death of his mother sent him into a spiral. That is, until he meets the eccentric violinist, Kaori, through his friends Tsubaki and Ryota. Her free and wild playing helps him take up the piano again and learn to love it and be himself. Sadly, though, Kaori’s health gets in the way of their love, possibly limiting their time together.

Your Lie In April has the reputation of making even some hardened anime fans become blubbering messes. It’s a story of love with many barriers and reclaiming a passion for life. But what do you do when life takes that love away from you? Just know that if you watch this anime, you will never be able to hear that opening theme song the same way ever again.

7. Ouran High School Host Club

Haruhi Fujioka is a scholarship student at the prestigious Ouran High School Academy. She keeps to herself, and while trying to find a place to study quietly, she stumbles across the Host Club, a group of six of the most handsome students in their grades that work to entertain and flirt with the young girls of the school. When Haruhi is accidentally sucked into joining the club, the boys do what they can to try and hide her actual gender while they all deal with their feelings for each other.

This is one of those animes that will remain among my top comfort animes. I will not deny that there are many issues with the anime (it came from the early 2010s and it SHOWS), but I still love it! I love Haruhi and Tamaki, Hikaru is a character I felt a sort of kinship with, and I still know all the words to that theme song! Plus, J. Michael Tatum’s beautiful voice. Enough said.

6. Kamisama Kiss

High schooler Nanami is recently homeless because of her father’s gambling problem. While sleeping on a bench, she saves a mystery man who a dog is chasing. When he offers her a place to live, she gladly accepts but finds out that place is an old shrine and the mystery man was a god that passed on his godhood to her. Now forced to get the shrine back on track, Nanami is also trying to get used to other yokai coming into her life, like the shrine familiar, Tomoe. Despite the taboo of it all, Nanami and Tomoe find themselves falling in love with each other, despite themselves.

My best friend introduced me to this anime, and I instantly fell in love with it. I’ve always loved the “girl gets involved in the yokai world” sort of trope, especially considering Inuyasha is one of my favorite shows. I also love the character designs and their stories and, of course, J. Michael Tatum’s beautiful silky-smooth voice.

Look at that sly fox back there, making me fall in love with him.

5. Toradora

Ryuji is a sweet guy with a stone-cold look. Taiga is a sweet-looking girl with the attitude of a tiger. The two seem like they couldn’t be more opposite. But, when they find out their houses are next to each other and that they are best friends with each other’s crushes (Ryuji is friends with Yusaku, who Taiga likes, and Taiga is best friends with Minori who’s Ryuji’s crush), the two decide to work together to set each other up. But despite this, these two unlikely lovers must come to terms with their feelings for each other.

I still remember my first time watching this show and how much it made me sob. It’s such a cute and sweet show. I love Ryuji’s sweet personality and Taiga’s sassy self becoming kinder and more defensive of Ryuji. I still LOVE IIIIIIT!!!

4. Wotakoi: Love is Difficult for Otaku

Narumi and Hirotaka are childhood friends who are now grown up and work at an office together. Narumi blames her love of BL and idols on the issues in her love life. Hirotaka finds out about this love, and she begs him to keep her secret. In return, she’ll keep his gaming love secret. The two seem perfect for each other, but as the title says, love is difficult for an Otaku.

I LOVE this anime! It’s so cute and sweet! I love that these characters are adults and not high schoolers. It just feels more enjoyable for me as an adult who still loves anime. Also, the opening is an infamous bop in the anime community.

3. Howl’s Moving Castle

Sophie Hatter is a plain young woman who lives in the hat shop owned by her family. After a strange circumstance introduces her to the notorious wizard, Howl Pendragon, she’s cursed by his ex, the witch of the waste, as an older woman. Sophie then makes the journey to Howl’s home to break the spell. Along the way, Sophie finds a love for life, a strength in herself, and a love for Howl. His own love for Sophie also begins to teach him about the world and what it means to sacrifice for others.

I know everyone, and their mothers are familiar with this movie if you watch Ghibli movies. It’s the basic intro movie to the studio. This isn’t an insult; it’s just what this movie has become. I have yet to meet a Ghibli fan whose knees don’t buckle when they hear “That’s my girl.” Their romance has had me by the throat since I was 13. The movie is also based on a book, though I’d say the only fundamental similarities are the titles and a few character names. I might need to reread the book, though.

2. My Love Story

High schooler Takeo has a hard time in love. He’s a tough, scary-looking guy who’s a big softy who wants to make someone happy. Sadly, any girl he is interested in would much rather go for his best friend, Makoto. That is until he meets Rinko, a small, gorgeous girl who falls in love with Takeo. At first, Takeo thinks she prefers Makoto, but after realizing the truth, the two begin a happy, loving relationship.

This is one of my favorites of the Shoujos I’ve watched recently. Few tropes make me happier than a tall, scary-looking guy that’s secretly a big sweetheart dating a small girl who’s also super sweet. I think their relationship is definitely on the healthier side of many shoujos I’ve seen, and their romance starts early enough that it feels much more satisfying. It builds the desire for them to get together. Still, seeing them develop as an actual couple is even more enjoyable because I often see shoujos that leave it to like the last two episodes for them to get together finally. We love healthy relationship dynamics in anime.

1. Revolutionary Girl Utena

Utena is an orphan given a mysterious rose ring by a prince. In her search for him, she comes to Ohtori Academy, where she enrolls to become a prince herself. She is sucked into a series of duels with the academy’s student council, who all wear matching rings and are fighting for the honor of marrying a girl named Anthy Himemiya, the “Rose Bride.” Utena eventually becomes Anthy’s fiance and continues to fight to protect her future wife. Along the way, Utena begins to unravel a mystery lying beneath the school and work through her feelings for Anthy.

Utena, to this day, is still considered one of the ultimate lesbian animes. This came out in 1996 and was explicit in its LGBTQ+ representation, which can be rare to this day. Like Can you find a better lesbian anime in 1996? What? Nonetheless, Utena is still the ultimate anime in the shoujo community and is absolutely beloved. If you can - WATCH IT! WATCH IT, WATCH IT, WATCH IT!

We have our first meeting with Uraraka here. It’s a cute little moment where we see Ochako and Deku developing their new friendship. We also see Uraraka’s sweet personality and desire to be a helper. It may not seem like much, but her quickness to help Deku shows her kind heart and charming personality!

14. Ochako vs. Bakugo

Oh man, I LOVED this scene! If you saw my last article, you know my enthusiasm for it! We see Uraraka’s power, determination, and desire to be the best she can be. I love when Aizawa calls out the crowd for wanting Bakugo to go easy on her, and I love that Bakugo says, “these hands are rated E for Everyone.” Even though Uraraka doesn’t take the victory, we see the beginning of her true power and resolve in the end. Go, girl, go!

13. Ochako working with Gunhead

Gunhead’s affection for Uraraka gives them an excellent teacher-student relationship and shows Uraraka how strong she can be. He unlocks that fighting spirit in her. Later episodes will show Uraraka wasn’t messing around at this internship - she took everything to heart and used it to become stronger. I already know that the girl's bench press weight is insane by now.

This is only a little thing, but come on! Look at this cutie-patootie! Her costume is adorable! A great early look that, in my opinion, reflects her style and personality.

But this costume is SO much better! It shows how Uraraka is growing up, becoming her own person, and getting stronger. It’s still adorable, but she’s a more complex person. She’s not the same nervous kid anymore, and she will gladly show it by slamming you into the dirt.

Back to Uraraka showing her kind personality, when she sees Deku in trouble at the entrance exam, she does the first thing she can think of. Smack his brains out so she can activate her quirk and keep him from getting what probably would have been another concussion. Hilarious, adorable, and practical at the same time.

When Deku really needed a friend, Uraraka not only stepped in to show her support for her friend but also to try and step up to do what she must to get that win! Gaslight, gatekeep, girl boss.

8. Ochako stops Shigaraki from hurting Deku

When class 1-A gets the chance to go to the mall, Deku is left alone and is unluckily spotted by Shigaraki. When Uraraka comes by and sees what’s happening, she almost immediately recognizes what’s happening. If it wasn’t for her, Shigaraki might have done something awful to Deku. She really might have saved his life!

I love Uraraka’s moment where she’s trying to improve her quirk. They really said, “let’s throw her in the human equivalent of a hamster ball.” I love it, though! But I certainly don’t pity the nausea the poor thing was probably feeling!

6. Ochako vs. Toga

Oh yes, go off, Uraraka! We love seeing girls protecting girls! I’d consider Tsuyu to be Uraraka’s best friend, so it’s no surprise that when Toga went after her, Uraraka went off on the basic principle of stopping a villain and protecting her bestie, but to show what she’s learned so far! We also get to see that Gunhead training at its finest. Look at what a badass our girl has become!

So this isn’t technically a moment with Uraraka, but I’m putting it in anyways because I remember how dramatic this was the first time I saw it! Deku’s reading of Uraraka/Camie/Toga shows that he knows a lot about Uraraka, and they’ve grown incredibly close. Not to mention how clever, strategic, and strong she’s become. Even in her attempt to strike back and help Deku, Uraraka proves Deku’s point by showing her resilience.

4. Ochako and Deku vs Bakugo and Iida

This isn’t exactly my favorite Uraraka moment, but this is where we get an insight into her ability to strategize and use her quirk to her advantage. It may not be flashy or as brutally powerful as Bakugo’s quirk, but she knows how to make it work to her benefit!

3. Ochako gets pumped for the sports festival

This moment I think, truly shows Uraraka’s determination to do her absolute best and be the best hero she can be. Even Mina comments on how Uraraka is usually very laid back. But not here, no sir! Uraraka’s going to do everything in her power to show all of y’all up!

If you liked Bee Movie, or just enjoy cute games, you might like this less cursed and much cuter game where YOU are the bee! She’s a little cutie-patootie bee trying to make her way in the world.

Help her collect pollen and fight off Satan’s Minions (otherwise known as wasps) and just have fun being a little honey bee!

14. Unpacking (Mac, Windows, Switch, Xbox One, PS4, PS5)

This has easily become one of my favorite games. You play out the life of a young woman and see her personality grow through her stages of life. It’s full of fun colors and little things that tell you about the character you’re playing & a bonus - it’s gay! Which, in my opinion, usually always makes things better.

13. Untitled goose game (switch, ps4, Xbox One, mac, windows)

Gameplay:

Many of us at some point may have experienced being harassed by the Satan bird that is - the goose. But in this, YOU get to be the harasser of a little UK village, where you let them know that peace was never an option. Have a little fun causing some chaos with a goofy honky goose and some lovely music to lull you as you play!

12. Pokemon Sword/Shield (Switch)

Gameplay:

I know there have been many complaints about how easy the game is to get through, but honestly, I didn’t play it for it to be a “difficult” game. Sure, I know there are better pokemon games, but this one just made me very happy. Growing up, I didn’t get to play pokemon games and now as an adult, I still struggle to find games that I can play without paying an arm and a leg. So you can imagine my absolute joy when my partner bought me this game. I had some experience with earlier games thanks to friends letting me briefly borrow theirs, but this one was all my own! I can certainly confirm it was much easier than the older games, but what it lacked in difficulty, I felt it made up for in very pretty scenery, cute pokemon, and music! This game was also my first introduction to a Mudbray which immediately became one of my favorite pokemon. (I named her “Honky Tonk”) So while this isn’t much of a challenge game, it still gives you the happy tingles with how pretty and cute it is!

11. Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion (Switch, Windows, Mac, Xbox One)

Gameplay:

I just KNOW someone who’s late-gen-Z aged helped make this game because it’s the exact kind of humor we thrive on. I got this game for my partner when it first came out because I knew it would make them laugh. It’s a super cute bundle of chaos with a turnip that is an absolute menace. You do what the game implies and…well…commit tax evasion. Everyone’s favorite crime (if you’re middle class or lower. No tax evasion for the rich :))

10. Monster Prom (Switch, windows, mac, Linux)

Gameplay:

Continuing the theme of cute gay games - we move on to Monster Prom. Monster Prom is a “spicy” dating sim where you can seduce your different monster classmates. Because you can play a character with whatever gender you desire, you can also seduce any gender of character you desire. It helps that every character is unique in their design and personality! I will note I added the spicy part because there are sexual themes, so be warned!

9. Night In The Woods (Switch, iOS, Mac, Windows, PS4, Xbox One, Linux)

Gameplay:

This game has LOVELY visuals for such a simple style! You follow the story of Mae, an anthropomorphic cat, and her cast of childhood friends trying to solve the mystery of her town while Mae comes to terms with her past issues. Now I want to stress - though this game has a lovely style and a VERY interesting story, it does delve into intense themes. If you’re up for it, then definitely take the time to play it, because it’s so worth it!

8. Slime Ranchers (Switch, Xbox One, Mac, Windows, Linux, PS4)

Gameplay:

Taking a break from some more intense cute games, we get a much sillier game in Slime Rancher! Beatrix is attempting to make her fortune on a ranch lightyears from Earth caring for slimes. It’s filled with cute little blobs that will make anyone fall in love! (they even have a cat slime) If you also like first-person games, this is an option that may reduce some of the anxiety that some of us can feel while trying to play games like Apex. (I try my best, okay?!)

7. Fall Guys (Switch, Windows, PS4, PS5, Xbox consoles)

Gameplay:

Those of us Nintendo loyalists now have the joy of being able to download Fall Guys for free on our Switch! It’s a fun competitive game where you play as some little jellybean-looking boogers to fight other players in a series of bright neon-colored obstacles. They’ve also added new courses to add to what is already a pretty good game! It can be a bit slow, but if you can get past that, you can have a great time filled with laughs and cursing at the odd player that tries to push you off a platform.

6. Harvest Moon (Switch, Xbox One, PS4, Windows, Wii, WiiU, SNES)

Gameplay:

And here we go with another farming simulator game! But like Animal Crossing, this one has history! Harvest Moon was first made for the SNES before more came out for the Wii and WiiU. Now, we have Harvest Moon: One World which is available for the Switch, Xbox, PS4, and Windows. I went ahead and included the entire series here in case anyone is old like me and still has their old Wii. (Got mine in 2007) If you want something super cute and easy-going like Stardew that also gives you some nostalgia for a bit of a 2010-era Nintendo game style, this is the perfect choice for you!

5. Ni No Kuni (Windows, PS3, PS4, Switch, DS, mobile (not specified which ones)

Gameplay:

Okay, if you’re from the 2000s Ghibli era, I KNOW you’ve at least SEEN this game! I remember how DESPERATELY I wanted it because I was so obsessed with Ghibli. (I mean I still am but that's another discussion for another article) It’s another series with some history - back to the days of the first PS3 and early DS consoles. It’s a beautiful RPG series with all of the charm of the beloved Ghibli movies as well!

4. A Short Hike (Switch, PS4, Xbox One, Windows, Linux, Mac)

Gameplay:

Enjoy a cute, silly game where you play as a bird going on an adventure through the woods and up a mountain in search of phone service! It’s a beautiful world with fall colors and a more pixelated style, but one that’s still extremely beautiful. The forest world you’re exploring honestly makes me want to go walk in the woods after, which is probably good. We probably could use some time to touch some grass.

3. Ori and the Will of the Wisps (switch, windows, mac)

Gameplay:

This is a platform game as a sequel to Ori and the Blind Forest. Holy crap, though, this game is utterly GORGEOUS! The colors are a phenomenal combination that reminds me of a cartoon version of the forests on Pandora. Ori is a super cute little bunny-looking creature that kind of reminds me of a pokemon or a ghibli character!

2. Doki Doki Literature Club (Mac, Windows, Linux)

Gameplay:

A super cute pastel anime dating sim where you play as a high schooler exploring the world of a high school’s new literature club. You get to meet super cute characters with different personalities and different tastes in books, but you find there’s some mystery and something darker underneath. I want to make it clear, that if you know anything about this game, you know there’s a warning for a reason! I’d still call it one of my FAVORITE games!

Gameplay:

One more farming simulator to finish this list off! You get another super cute and beautiful game with an aesthetic and style that’s like Breath of the Wild and like Stardew in gameplay. Take this as another opportunity to get another peaceful and beautiful farming simulator!

Anime is a brilliantly shining star in a world where some people just need the escape. The great news is that there are events all around the world that people of like minds can gather, where some small gatherings are at local libraries, and some are extraordinary convention centers packed to the brim with crazy cosplays and just about a million mystery grab bags.

One could argue that other anime events include release events or in some cases, re-release events, and I agree wholeheartedly with whoever that ‘one’ is. In this article, I’ll go over the biggest anime events in the entire world, in order from smallest to biggest.

10. Ghibli Fest, USA

Ghibli Fest is a nationwide reshowing of Studio Ghibli films. The event lasts eight months and shows Studio Ghibli’s most loved movies. A reshowing of classic tales that gives fans who grew up on Ghibli local access through Fathom-supported theaters for a reasonable price.

$12.00 for kids’ tickets

In some locations, tickets cost $12.50

Ghibli fest is a great way to bring a geeky family together for an outing and introduce the next generation to the movies that raised us to be who we are unapologetically. Ghibli Fest 2022 is currently in full swing, and the next batch of showings is in August, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Only Yesterday. Great for people on vacation in August and are looking for something to do.

If you want to go to the film that is most likely to blow your socks off, look no further than Ghibli fest 2022’s showing of Spirited Away. Having won so many awards, being the highest-grossing film in Japan and having the highest rating on IMDB it’s really no surprise. If you’ve been there, done that, go for Ponyo or Howl’s Moving Castle. It’s hard to go wrong with the entire lineup this year, honestly.

The price of admission is absolutely worth it, as long as you live in Malaysia, otherwise, plane tickets might set you back. With all this stuff, I have to wonder how they can afford to practically give these tickets away. The event hit its highest mark last year at 20,000 attendees, which is probably the reason they can provide the tickets at the price they do. Your attendance should be determined by how good the accommodations nearby will be and the cost of the ticket. If you plan on doing some illegal stuff…. don’t. Whatever it is, it can wait till you're off foreign soil.

Lest we forget that the event this year is pirate themed, pack your One Piece cosplay, and be ready to see a couple of Luffys and cry over some Aces. Don’t forget your log pose.

8. Smash!, Australia

Smash! is Australia’s largest anime convention, and 2022 was a big year. The celebrity lineup included a multitude of British and Australian Anime Youtubers, including The Anime Man, CDawgVA, Sydsnap, Gigguk, and many hololive Vtubers. The event lasted one weekend, and tickets are as follows:

The Catwalk is a place to show off all the hard work you put into your cosplay as well as get support from your fellow cosplay enthusiasts as you take to the stage with poise and prowess!
Show off your hard work with an art competition that is sure to showcase many brilliant and chuckle-worthy pieces
A gaming section is all the extroverted introvert needs to settle in and kick some butt. With top-of-the-line PCs and plenty of games to satisfy your need to dominate, go crazy. Just don’t break any keyboards, they might not like that.
Karaoke is the stuff of dreams… or was it nightmares? That depends on your sense of humor. If you want to wail like a banshee to anime opening songs, go straight for it, and don’t hesitate to go banshee mode at the One Punch Man season one theme.
I can't believe it took this long to tell you about the maid cafe! For a little bit of a price, cosplay maids will serve some tasty drinks and treats while you and your friends rest your feet. Have your fun, just remember not to have the bad kinda fun… they will get the spray bottle.
YU-GI-OH, POKEMON, AND MAGICK OH MY! Trust me, this is gonna be cool. With trading card game free play, bring your best deck and wipe out the competition. If you’re feeling like you’ve got the skill, head into the tournament and sweep the floor with the competition. Don’t forget your Grand Abolisher.
Test your knowledge in trivia, battle it out for the top spot in the anime world, and destroy the competition!

All in all, this is a giant convention with a ton to do, and only three days to do it. Pack your wallet tight and journey into the valley of the beast to wade through a sea of like-minded anime fans.

7. Hatsune Miku Expo, Worldwide

This worldwide concert tour is amazingly well made, with the hologram Hatsune Miku taking on the stage in a way that only a hologram could, with blinding lights emanating from the crowd’s souvenir glow sticks and people from all over the world gathering for these events that occur… all over the world.

The lights that project across the stage and through the fog are brilliant and awe-inspiring, as they travel across the stage in sweeping motions that are only overshadowed by Hatsune Miku’s movements, as Idolish as she can get.

If you love anime, there's a big chance you used to or still do love Hatsune Miku and the Vocaloid crew. If so, this could be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, depending on your budget, as tickets range from $80 to $300 depending on the experience you want from the show.

Going worldwide, from Indonesia to Los Angeles it’ll be hard to miss a show with the excuse of ‘she didn’t get to my country’.

6. Hyper Japan Festival, U.K.

Hyper Japan Festival has made its return, garnering 30,000 attendees over its 3-day span. It is an otaku’s dreamland, with cosplays everywhere, artists’ alleys, and many many delicious delicacies. Seriously, if there’s one thing to check out, it’s the amazing food court at this convention.

The event has earned a bit of a name for itself, the weeaboos dreamland, as 99% of attendees are not Japanese, but the event aims to absolutely show off the dreamiest parts of Japanese culture. Try as I might, I can't stop thinking about the karaage there!

5. Anime Expo, USA

This is the big one in America, an absolute doorbuster with people bustling to get in and tickets selling out in minutes. I think I can see why, with events and attractions filling in Los Angeles’ best convention center to the brim. With the average pass, you can get one day access for $40-$60, and that's alright, but for the 4 day pass, you’ll have to be willing to shell out up to $160 per person, which can get a bit pricey for those of us who have other expenses.

If you get that premium goodness, one could argue it is worth the price, with things like a premium grab bag, priority admission to panels, and access to the Exhibit halls one day early. I am not one of those that argue this. The premium price is ridiculous compared to what you can get at smaller cons for much less. Maybe it’s all just paying for the name.

If you decide that this premium experience is for you, get ready for some cool events such as:

Live concerts
Premium Film showings
AMV Competitions
Masquerade events
A Maid Cafe
And to subvert expectations, a Butler Cafe

All this sounds awesome, but what we all think to attend for are the Exhibition halls, artist alleyways, and the overwhelming number of amazing cosplays. Remember to look, not touch.

4. Japan Expo, France

Japan Expo in Paris is arguably one of the biggest anime events in the world, if not for the bad times taking their toll on returnee attendance, it likely would be the biggest outside of Japan. In 2022 the expo is back into the fray and going strong with a lot of awesome ticket types ready for great days. Let’s go through the tickets and what they’ll give you for the money!

A plain Thursday ticket goes for 22 euros, discounted is 21.25 euro
A plain Friday ticket is 20 euros, discount is 19 euro
The plain Saturday ticket goes for 30 euros, discount is 28.50 euro
The plain Sunday ticket goes for 25 euros, discount is 23.50 euro
The plain 4 day pass goes for 77 euro, discounted is 73.25 euro
The star passes don’t give access to the festivities, but star pass zone finals for the ECG at 20 euros for foreigners and 10 euros for French citizens, and 25 euros for the weekend pass
The zen pass starts at 120 euros and gives priority and early access as well as unlimited re-entry to the event. The upgraded version, zen pass+ comfort gives you storage at the checkroom and exclusive expo goodies and is 216 euro.

And oh my gosh that was a lot of info, but wow, somehow it seems much more worthwhile than Anime Expo in the US. Let's take a look at some events next!

There are about two pages worth of more stuff, all of which is steeped in Japanese Culture, from traditional arts to new age events, there is Japanese running through the veins of Japan Expo. The cost of admission is pretty hefty, but if you ask me, paying for a vacation to Paris during the time of Japan Expo and not attending would be an otaku sin.

3. Itasha Tengoku, Japan

This one might seem weird to include towards the top, but anyone who knows the anime scene in and out knows the anime-based obsession with Itasha (Painful Car). Literally decorating your beautiful sports car with an anime and game character wrap, basically making it a walking advertisement in the otaku’s language. Itasha is growing in Japan and making its way towards America surprisingly quickly, with itasha showing up at conventions around the USA pretty consistently.

This event is the epicenter, a car show to cringe at, or maybe to stand in awe of. General entry tends to sit at 1,500 yen or about $15 and has a massive lot of cars, events, and special guests to keep a person occupied. It tends to also be a congregation spot for rockabilly types, something awesome to see!

2. Anime Japan, Japan

Anime Japan just needed to be on this list, and it took a lot of digging to not put it on top. It is oftentimes considered the heaven otakus go to after saving enough of their meager income. Hard work and dedication come in all forms, but in this expo, it is shown through the staff's dedication to keeping the event in line.

Rowdy crowds offset by the awe of being at the greatest event of the year, and cosplays so complex that flash photography could be dangerous. This is it, you've gotten to Japan and made it to the top. Let's check out what you paid to get in the door.

You got the premium ticket. Ultimate access and super cool lottery prizes. You paid about $370, and you don’t regret a penny of it. Your cousin paid 5,000 yen, about $45, and got a lottery and some goods without unlimited access.

The cheapest ticket costs your dad 1,900 yen, about $14 and your brother forgot to buy his ticket ahead of time and paid the onsite price of 2,300 yen, or about $17. They all severely underpaid compared to you, but you’ve been saving all year for this, and you aren’t about to spare any expense or luggage space.

1. Comiket, Japan

With 750,000 attendees in 2019, can AnimeJapan even compare to Comiket, the anime and manga lover’s paradise? It's about time I show you the wondrous world of anime and manga and its true heaven, a place where otaku and weeaboo converge, where cultures across the world join hands and worship the art that brings us all joy. In all seriousness, I can't express how amazing this event is.

After gaining recognition early on as an event by the fans for the fans, it has grown into what some might call the king of anime conventions. The level of skill and effort put into the sheer brilliance displayed in each cosplay, the booths of artists sharing their dreams, and the comradery a person feels with all the people around them, no matter their cultural background is astounding.

Try if you might, to picture this, a sea of cosplays floods the streets, vendors line the walls and food is prominent. Even across town, you see people in cosplay heading towards the epicenter, Tokyo Big Sight.

If you are going to admire everything, and not in cosplay, a meager 700 yen, about $5

And if you plan to cosplay, you pay about 3,500 yen, or about $32. This is all in light of the pandemic, in a large effort to keep numbers down.

The hopes for the future are that at the end of the pandemic, the event will go back to being completely free. Comiket has always been a place for independent mangaka to spread their art and stories, and gain exposure in the big world of manga. At its peak, it was the brilliant, shining star of the anime and manga world.

[Top 10] Biggest Anime Events in the USA (Ranked)

When you think about anime, do you automatically think “Japan!”? In most cases, yes, you’d be right to do so, but today our focus is on the United States of Smash! Oh, wait a minute, that's not correct…

Today I’ve compiled a list of the biggest and best Anime events in The United States of America, the land of the free and home of the weeb. Let's take it from small to big! I’m sure some of these will be a bit surprising to even seasoned anime fans!

10. Crunchyroll Expo, San Jose California

Crunchyroll is the ultimate in anime streaming, having just absorbed Funimation, they have solidified their place at the top. Now, all we need is for Crunchyroll to take One Punch Man back and we’ll be set. All this aside, they have a convention as well, which stands at an attendance of 16,000.

This number would be unprecedented for a small convention, but given Crunchyroll's name in the industry, it's no surprise they made it to this list. Let's take a peek at ticket prices before we peer deeper into the events at Crunchyroll Expo.

Three day pass, Adult - $135
One day pass, Adult - $65
Three day pass, Kids under 12 - $25

Now that that's done and dusted, it's pretty clear that as long as accommodations are affordable, it's a great deal to just get the three day pass, as you're paying for the full first two days and $5 for the third day. That being said, it's a good deal compared to THEIR one day pass price, which is on par with AnimeExpo in Los Angeles.

AnimeExpo is much larger, with a bit more to do for a similar rate, but it's really up to the choice of supporting the business that provides us with all the Shonen an otaku can stomach, or a large convention that might be overwhelming due the sheer number of attendees. I know my pick.

9. Youmacon, Michigan

Youmacon is one of those hidden gems. At the very least, it's hidden to all but 22,000 or so attendees, which actually must mean it's not very well hidden. The event is held at the TCF center and the Detroit Marriott Renaissance Center.

This con is known mostly for its strict rules regarding attendee safety. They strongly put the rules out there: no roughhousing, no signs requesting money or lewd acts, no alcohol, no sleeping in public spaces, and in the rules, it is required that attendees take a freakin shower, making me wish all cons required that.

Let's start by looking at the ticket cost:

- Thursday events require no pass, as they are open to the public.

These prices are actually pretty great, I don't see anything wrong with dropping an extra $20 on entrance considering most stays in town last more than a day.

The con has a few events it boasts about, one of which is its cosplay competition. The rules are strict, but the prize makes it worth the trouble, a cool $500 cash prize that is. The rules are, only Japanese media costumes with a reference picture, and no professional cosplayers, defined as earning 50% or more income off of cosplay creation and modeling.

Youmacon is to some people, a cosplay paradise. This is for good reason, as their strict enforcement of the rules keeps creepy hands from wandering, and playful hands from breaking your precious prop or armor. Take heed of the rule book, and you shall surely have a wonderful time.

8. Sakura-Con, Seattle Washington

Sakura-Con is an April convention for anime fans galore set in sometimes gorgeous Seattle. If you’re a true anime fan and have been missing out on Sakura con, remember, the next one is coming up, and early registration is an option to get cheaper tickets. The event is rather impressive, standing at a solid 25,000 attendees every year.

Taking all that into account, it seems like an expensive endeavor, mostly if you are commuting to the event. Let's figure up those ticket price projections for next year to decide just how expensive it is!

Early Registration costs $60
Registration from 7/13 onward is $70

Any registered Sakura Con members have full three day access to the event and taking into account the amount of stuff to do and see, that seems pretty fair. That’s a fair bit better than other conventions charging $100+ for a weekend pass.

7. Otakon, Washington D.C.

Otakon, a mixture of Otaku and convention, truly artistic in nature… or is it poetic? Maybe it's just a funny portmanteau. All my ramblings aside, Otakon is very popular, garnering over 28,000 attendees last year, and looking at breaking that record in the coming event.

With the sheer number of people in attendance, it will be a struggle to not get lost in the sea of cosplays, and an even bigger struggle to not let your wallet waste away in their absolutely enormous artists’ alley. Seriously, are we as humans truly built to withstand the allure of a full-size Oblivion Keyblade? If you make it past that, how can anyone be expected not to buy a figure from the rare product vendor. All I know is that Narmaya doesn’t get enough merch.

6. Anime Weekend Atlanta

Anime Weekend Atlanta is a weekend in Atlanta that focuses on anime. Catchy, right? Actually, it's an abhorrent mouthful of a name and I’m surprised they haven't tried to change it.

Anyways, the event itself is actually quite incredible, making its debut in 1995 and going on to host 30,000 attendees annually. It's a brilliant not-so-little convention that lays its claim to be the largest anime convention in the southeast, which is surprisingly a very stable claim indeed.

Let's move on to ticket prices, because to have grown so brilliantly and made their presence known so well, they had to have good funding, right?

Yea but it doesn't feel extortionate. Depending on what dates you buy your membership for, you can get either a $75 ticket or an $80 ticket. They are the same ticket. You pick it up at the pre-registration booth and it comes with nothing. Alternatively, you pay at the event, in which case for a 4 day pass you pay $90, for a 3 day pass you pay $70 and for a 2 day pass you pay $60. Single days are as follows:

Thursday pass-$35
Friday or Saturday pass-$50
Sunday pass-$40

Looking at what can be done with the pass, it's probably best to consider your options carefully. Are you staying for more than one day? Get the appropriate pass. Are you staying for one day? Which day? Much to consider with so many options. You’d be well off ordering the advance four day ticket if you are unsure, as it's still cheaper than the regular four day pass and only very slightly more expensive than the plain three day pass.

To determine just how worth it these passes are, we do need a look at the activities at the event, and they are as follows:

5. A-Kon, Irving Texas

A-Kon is Something special to a lot of people, mostly it is a shining star in the anime world where outwardly liking and showing your preference toward anime is not so fun. Texas isn’t the least tolerant of places, but it certainly isn’t great for most unconventional fandoms. Irving is in itself a safe haven, A-Kon being their home base for anime lovers.

If you look deep into A-Kon, you’ll eventually want to hear juicy tidbits. Good thing that there are none, and all you’ll find are the many controversies surrounding Akon the Rapper. Considering the things you can do at A-Kon, the ticket price is pretty good. You can currently only purchase full weekend passes, but they are only $70 for adults and $45 for kids 6-12, which is on par with one day passes from other similar conventions.

4. Anime Matsuri, Houston Texas

Ah, bringing it back to controversies. Anime Matsuri has a good following, but it would be much larger if the creator didn’t have such controversy over terrible deeds. They currently stand at about 36,000 attendees, which puts them at the solid halfway point on this list. They have early registration pricing, making them competitive and a good option for those who truly enjoy planning ahead. Let’s take a quick peek at prices. From July the year before the event, to right before the event Prices increase as follows:

Adult Membership Badge goes from $55 to $95

Kids Membership Badge goes from $25 to $40

SuperPass Membership goes from $180 to $300

The stuff happening during the event is rather interesting. You can buy an add-on to your pass in the form of… dah dah dah daaaaa.. A $10 ticket to Hentai Fest! If that's not intriguing then I’m not sure if you're a true anime fan, and if you happen to be so, are you still too innocent to have eaten the lewd-lewd fruit?

Basically, don’t be creepy and we can all continue to lead happy, convention-going lives. Oh yea, I don't support Anime Matsuri, in fact I support the boycott. 3. Studio Ghibli Fest, Nationwide

Studio Ghibli Fest is a nationwide re-release of all the great Studio Ghibli movies. The greats we see this year are absolutely worth your time, with tickets, depending on location, ranging from $7.50 to $15.00.

This event is a great way to bring a nerdy family together, and show the kids the movies that Studio Ghibli raised us on. Kids tickets tend to be a markdown, so take advantage of that to bond with your child over a magical adventure sure to help them grow up unapologetically themselves.

It's time to heal your inner child as well and to do so, it may just be time to bring ourselves drudging through the theater doors so that we may frolic once more along the open fields of Totoro’s domain, or fly through the sky on winged machines with howl’s winged self by our side.

The ones coming up in August are Kiki’s Delivery Service and Only Yesterday, but if you want to see the best one out of the whole lineup, go in for Spirited Away. I’m sure that's really no surprise as a suggestion.

The release of Mugen Train was met with many things, rave reviews being one of them. This was arguably one of the biggest moments in USA anime history, as the release saw a gross profit of 19.5 million dollars and a lot of delectable memes.

One of the most brilliant memes to come out of the release is of course shouting at the top of your lungs, “ARIN YEAGER” during the showing, and the meme eventually evolved to shouting it pretty much anywhere it might make something a tad bit funny. Another meme… a detestable meme, and I only say so because it is so funny in the darkest way,

1. Anime Expo, Los Angeles California

It's about time we get to the blue whale of the list. Before we begin, I have to remind myself and everyone reading, big doesn’t mean best. Anime Expo is number 1 on this list because it has attendance numbers that tend to reach over 100,000 attendees, and this list is about the largest events in America. If we were going by quality, I would put Youmacon, for its unique concept and optimal time of year.

The main point is, Anime Expo is big and expensive, so people with that money to burn go there, and burn a hefty wad of cash they do. Let's look at ticket prices that bring depression to the depressed, even though the event isn't worth it anyway:

Kids four day badge-$35
Premiere Fan Badge-$415

That's it, you get three options and two of them are nigh unreachable. Turns out, not a lot of us are under 12 years old and most of us can't shell out nearly $500 for a badge that only grants us early access and priority access to lines. This is an event for the rich anime fan to enjoy, but let's look at their activities while we’re checking them out, keeping in mind, most of these are ticketed, so an extra price just to enter:

[Top 10] Demon Slayer Best Characters We Love

So many characters to choose from, we had to do a sword fight to maintain the best.

Demon Slayer became one of the most known anime in the modern world next to “Attack On Titan” and “Dragon Ball” series. With a stellar animation from studio Ufotable, thrilling action, memorable quotes, a great soundtrack, and most of all, a loveable and incredible characters, it’s no wonder we had to do a top-tier list with the best characters we love from the anime.

10. Tanjiro Kamado

Our first entry had to be Tanjiro Kamado. He is the most popular choice on the show for so many reasons. He is a kind character and a very good friend, he is a great brother with the ultimate quest to save his sister and he is an incredibly trained swordmaster. His motive, personality, and belief, it’s a rare combination to be likable at the same time. Something tells us that when his journey comes to an end, it will be one of the most heartwarming moments we have experienced in anime.

What makes Tanjiro great:

Compassionate when demon open their heart
Brave
Loyal
Works hard for Nezuko’s sake

9. Kyoujuro Rengoku

Kyojuro has a friendly attitude, enthusiasm, and courage that are infectious. He is the Flame Hashira inside the Demon Slayer Corps. His code of honor goes back to his mother who taught him to always protect the weak. He is well remembered because he participated in the best fight in the series with incredible animation.

What makes Kyoujuro great:

Great personality
Appealing design
Strong fighter

8. Shinobu Kochou

For some, she is the waifu of the series. For others, an amazing and strong female character with a fun and easy-going personality. She is an incredible fighter who takes great pleasure in being cruel to them, right before killing them. With a uniquely stylish appearance and fighting style, makes Shinobu is one of the most loveable female characters in anime and cosplayers. Her technique is the Insect breathing with poison swords.

What makes Shinobu great:

Bizarre personality
Her style of clothing
Powerful

7. Nezuko Kamado

As you may know, Nezuko Kamado is Tanjiro Kamado's sister who managed to survive Kuzan's attack becoming a demon. She has two sides all fans cherish, One is the cute little sister character that everyone loves and the other is the destructive demon character that everyone is a fan of. Despite her demonic hunger, she nobly refuses to harm people or even drink blood.

What makes Nezuko great:

Protective
Fighter
Loyal to her brother, Tanjiro

6. Giyuu Tomoika

In case you don’t remember, we meet Giyuu in the first episode when we follow Tanjiro and Nezuko. He immediately tries to get rid of Nezuko, but as soon as he realizes that she isn't dangerous, he lets her live. He is the master of the water breathing technique. Giyuu is a reserved person who always has a serious look on his face and prefers keeping to himself.

What makes Giyuu great:

Strict
Protector
Hit water technique includes great animation every time

5. Inosuke Hashibira

Raised in the forest by wild boars, it’s no wonder This man is known for an unreal amount of violence and aggression when he is on the battlefield. If you take his boar mask off, you’ll see a really attractive face. What is best about this character is not that he is loud, aggressive, and prideful but that he is always brimming with overconfidence, as a result of the faith he’ll win any fight he participates in.

What makes Inosuke great:

Wild Fighting Style
Great humor
Eccentric personality

4. Akaza

The protagonist of one of the best fights so far in the anime. Akaza has a hate/love relationship with fans and this is because his personality is quite captivating. He is the rank 3 Demon from the 12 Kizuki and his strength is beyond incredible. We meet him In the movie “Mugen Train”, and Akaza arrives knowing well enough the stakes awaiting him by fighting the Demon Slayer Corp, but incredibly they are not threat at all.

What makes Tanjiro great:

Powerful demon
Cool personality
Participates in a memorable fight

3. Daki

This gorgeous woman also happened to be the cruelest being you will ever encounter. She was the main villain of the first season and one of the Upper Ranked Moons. With a very sad backstory, Daki stole our hearts with her heartwarming story of how and why she became a demon. Even moments before she died, Tanjiro showed compassion making her a loveable and probably missable character despite her horrible actions.

What makes Daki great:

Gorgeous character design
Heartwarming backstory
Good villain

2. Uzui Tengen

A very popular male character that is probably the best good-looking of the series. With a little red flag on his side, having three wives, he has a unique and awesome ability to fight. His breathing technique revolves around the concept of sound, making his ears to be super sharp and identifying sounds from miles away. He fights with two swords making him fast and deathly moving better than a ninja.

What makes Uzui great:

Confident
Good looking
Two sword fighter

1. Enmu

One of the demons with a lot of screen time, Enmu seems to be the main antagonist of the movie before Akaza revealed himself for the epic battle. This powerful demon looks pacific but can be deathly. A character with a very sadistic personality, and enjoys the pain and suffering of humans, with his favorite and signature method of torment, tormenting dreams. He will give his victim a happy and pleasant dream before turning it into a nightmare.

What makes Tanjiro great:

Villanous design
Signature technique
Diverse and androgen design
