In a world run by imagination and creativity, anything is possible. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a social simulation game crafted back to life in March 2020. It’s glamorously re-invented for the Nintendo Switch and Switch Lite, shedding a whole new magical adventure for new and old fans.

1. Let's Play!

Welcome to your new island where any and everything is possible!

Animals and humans rule in this fifth main game of the Animal Crossing series. Players are greeted by Tom Nook who introduces the Nook Inc’s Getaway Package. Players are flown to a deserted island blanketed with fields of greenery, trees, and rivers.

Arriving on the undeveloped land mass, the character begins brainstorming ideas to design and customize the island.

Timmy and Tommy assist you in the initial process of inhabiting your island. Customizing your little character is the first step the game prompts. Depending on where players are located, they can select a hemisphere and sync the time and season.

Two colorful and excited animal residents are joined by the player when landing on the island. Each island has its own custom fruit that can be found ripening on cedar trees.

As nighttime approaches, you’ll be able to set up your campsite tent as well as the tents of the two animal residents. Location of houses and campsites are completely up to the gamer.

Selection of campsites should be chosen with care as it can’t be changed until later on in the game. Once tents are latched down, manager Tom Nook gives the first task of building a fire.

Tree branches can be obtained by shaking trees and then collecting them off the ground. You’ll pass the branches onto Tom Nook beginning an island ceremony. Here players will pick a unique name for their island!

Gamers take the title of Resident Representative on their new custom island!

A small celebration commences around the campfire congratulating your character. Sleeping the night away excitedly, players wake the next day to start building and creating as they please.

The world is at your fingertips as you pretty much have free reign to do whatever your heart desires. Of course to make progress, there are specific tasks that have to be done.

2. Character, House, and Island Design

Design and customize the exterior and interior of your island as well as your characters and furniture!

Character design and customizations have endless combos. Hairstyle, skin color, eye shape and color- you name it! You can fashion your person to mimic your style or make up a completely new identity.

Wardrobes and mirrors can be accessed with a DIY recipe which can be found throughout the island. Once built, these can be used to dress up in stylish, sporty outfits. Mirrors allow you to redo your hair, face features and structures, and skin tone.

As the island develops further, you gain access to shopping catalogs and can purchase more clothing. There’s an option at the Resident Service building under “Nook Shopping” laying out a display of various items waiting to be bought and placed on the island.

More and more animal residents are introduced and asked to move in by your character. Here you can design the placement and style of their homes. There's 6 villagers when players move in. 15 animal villagers are the max and during play will ask to move out and be replaced by a new friend.

Each animal character has their own likes and dislikes. Lazy, jock, cranky, and smug are the traits given to the male villagers while females can be normal, peppy, big sister, or snooty. Island dwellers' hobbies and styles can differ from their personality traits.

As you industrialize your town further, new business characters and stores can be built. Nook's Cranny is owned by raccoons brother Timmy and Tommy. Tools, furniture, diy recipes, and miscellaneous home-good items are available to buy in exchange for bells.

Blathers owns the museum where bugs, fish, artifacts, and fossils can be handed in and assessed. Within the museum Brewster opens a small cafe where you can stop by for some delightful coffee.

Isabelle is Mayor of Resident Service office guiding players on projects and town status. As the town expands, a furniture store owned by Labelle can be added letting players try on and sport some unique threads!

Characters can expand their houses reaching up to 6 rooms in total. Tom Nook has you covered in payment investment to do so.

3. Tools and Bells

Let’s dig right into the possibility of creation in Animal Crossing for all you, “tools.” Shovel, fishing rod, net, slingshot, ax, ladder, and vault pole are essential tools to construct your island. These can be crafted using sticks, clay, and iron nuggets. The workbench in Resident Services allows crafts to be conjured up using the island's resources.

Resident Services is home to the Nook Stop kiosk . This is your alibi to redeem Nook Miles and DIY craft recipes. You can expand your skills and make even more elaborate items and customizations.

Tools and DIY recipes are for sale at Nook's Cranny too if players would rather buy instead of crafting. Inventory upgrades give you more pocket space. DIY recipes range from beginner to advanced, allowing you to upgrade your skills little by little.

Keep those tools on hand at all times! DIY recipes are hidden everywhere throughout the island. Bottles will occasionally wash up on the ocean shore containing new recipes for awesome crafts to whip up.

Bells are the island's currency and are abundant everywhere you go. Find them by hitting rocks, shaking trees, and selling fish and bugs. If your pockets are feeling light, earning bells is beyond easy as you can essentially sell anything you find or catch on the island.

Brilliantly colored insects and scaly bugs crawl and float around the island. Cast your line into the ocean for fish and fly your net at buzzing bugs to sell them for bells at the shop. Fruit, weeds, sticks, and stones can be sold to rack up the cash too.

Nook Miles is a fun new currency added to Animal Crossing. At arrival on your island you’re given a phone which has numerous functions including a Nook Miles reward option. Miles will be rewarded by completing certain tasks like catching bugs and customizing your home.

4. Multiplayer and Online Play

With quite a few multiplayer options to select from, you'll never feel alone

Animal villagers are a hoot to be around, but sometimes human interaction is a nice break. Animal Crossing New Horizons has a massive multiplayer section. Playing with friends adds numerous possibilities, guaranteeing hours of fun!

Via local network play or online network play are the two multiplayer choices. These can be accessed at Dodo airlines when speaking with Orville. By clicking on “I want visitors,” gamers will be promoted to select multiplayer preference.

To play locally, no internet is required. A Dodo code will then be given to you.

This code can be shared with other users enabling local connection. Visiting players can’t change your island or bring any items except fallen fruit with them, so don’t worry.

Any player whose Nintendo Switch is linked and on your friends list can join the game and freely wander your island. Nook Phones “Call Islander” app can be clicked on to invite other residents of the island for Party Play.

Eight characters can build houses on the island, living lavishly. Though, Party Play restricts four people to play at one time. Whoever initiated the invite leads while the others are merely the followers. Followers' abilities only go as far as helping collect shells, fish, and bugs.

Whenever you’ve had enough human interaction, Orville will close the airport games. Friends will be kindly asked to exit the island, flying them back to their native land.

Nintendo Online play is another super cool way to play with others. Tapping Online Play opens the gates allowing anyone participating in New Horizons to connect. A Nintendo Online subscription and internet are needed for use of this option.

Orville will wonder who characters want to invite. Selecting “All My Friends” unbolted the gates in anticipation for the arrival of friends. A pretty neat benefit is that you can use the keyboard to shoot a message and summon friends for a play date.

You can always request to visit a friend's island. The same guidelines apply in the airport, instead of “invite” you will tap “visit someone.”

Choose your buddies wisely as there’s a best friends list that gives free range to anyone on it. Best friends can take items and use your tools, so beware of thieves! Friends can not use tools or pocket items other than fruits, bugs, and fish.

5. Extras and Rewards

During night, look up to the sky and wish upon a shooting star!

Anxiety and worries will melt away as you god of your island. Creation, color, and layout combinations exist beyond the heavens. One day characters may want to merely mosey around the island sniffing flowers while another day they’re up for difficult tasks and construction duties.

Whatever you choose to do, there is always some sort of reward or newly discovered element. There’s no rush to finish the game, though there’s really no indication of game completion. You can reach a 5 star rating with progression of Island and character development.

The game surely does not stop once you’ve achieved maximum level rating. Everyday the boat tour glides you away to a new island with the possibility of discovering new items. Sometimes the island does not gesture any new articles and the boat can be ridden the following day.

Dodo airlines allows you to visit a remote island as many times a day as you fancy. It does cost 2,000 Nook Miles, so fulfilling tasks will aid in building this currency. Some islands bloom with new goodies whilst another may offer nothing original.

You really never know what you stumble upon when awakening to a new day. You can always sell already acquired items like fossils and DIY recipes for bells at Nook's Cranny. If you’re already loaded on the bells, your furry neighbors can be gifted items you don’t want or need.

Your island is always showing love by gifting new items or presenting a new fish or bug. Keep your head up! Balloons can be spotted floating with presents in midair. They can be popped using a slingshot revealing a cool prize or money.

Nook Miles will be rewarded for collecting certain amounts of fish and bugs. Even by capturing the same creepy crawly, Nook Miles will be built up until the limit is reached. Also, shooting stars can be wished upon at night, leaving behind star fragments for DIY recipes!

It takes much exploration and time to completely design and develop everything. From flower spawns to rare animals and items, seekers and searchers will enjoy this challenge of the game. Again, there’s no rush to get anything done.

6. Aesthetic Graphics and Themes

Bloom all sorts of fantastic flowers that pop brilliantly out of the screen with color!

Invention of the Nintendo Switch and Switch light has majorly impacted graphic quality. The island truly is awake and buzzing with life and light. Movement, color, and overall visual composition are certainly at their finest.

The island is teeming with vivid flora and fauna. Flowers are dressed in every color imaginable and closely replicate real life species. Tulips, roses, hyacinths, windflowers, lilies, pansies, mums, and cosmos cover open fields displaying spectacular color schemes.

Bugs and fish are beautifully sketched with each of them maintaining unique patterns. Striking color combinations dress all our insects and ocean dwellers. The game gives unique and thorough markings for each of them, adding lots of depth to New Horizons graphic effects.

Animals Crossing: New Horizons, did a stellar job at including as much detail to characters, wildlife, and 3D effects. Players will be tempted to try and jump into their console to enjoy their fantastical, enchanting island.

7. New Features and Possibilities

The Nook Phone is filled with different apps to aid your character in their architectural adventure!

The real world is evolving everyday. It wouldn’t make sense not to keep our beloved games up to date as well! New Horizons has boatloads of new content, add on games, and refreshing new features.

The Nook Phone has a variety of apps that offer easy access for users. Photos can be taken, islanders can be called, Nook Mile tasks can be redeemed, and you can look up DIY projects. Island Designer app, Critterpedia, Rescue Services, and Happy Home Network can be unlocked with further play.

An Island Designer app opens an array of helpful and quirky landscape options. Cliffs of grass and stone can be built to easily climb different platform levels.

Players can build bridges in the blink of an eye to cross rivers and streams. Layout scheme of the island can be completely redecorated as well. Pathways of wood, brick, and sand leading up to buildings are constructible!

Quite a myriad of new DIY recipes and customizations are discoverable along your leisure journey. Trucks, Ferris wheels, ponds, and even giant robots can be made or redeemed. Placement of these objects have no right or wrong place. Beds and toilets can be placed in the center of the town square if the player wishes!

Colors and patterns of certain objects can be customized at the workbench. Some items can’t be customized on your island and must be flown to Harvs Island at the airport.

Dodo airlines is the place to go to visit other players' islands, take tours, and access Harvs Island.

Back at the Nook Stop, nook miles tickets are redeemable for 2,000 miles. From there the plane will fly you to a random island with new fruit, DIY recipes, and seasonal objects. You never know if winter, fall, spring, or summer is taking place on this foreign island until you arrive. Snowflakes, acorns, cherry blossoms, and mushrooms await to be collected.

Dodo Airlines allows visitation to Harvs Island. The island is bare once arriving, but various vendors can be invited to inhabit his island. Saharah, Katrina, Harriet, Cyrus and Reese, Leif, Redd, and Kicks make up the shopping plaza vendors. You can buy wallpapers, rugs, clothing items, and produce items.

Cyrus and Reese own a customization shop where items that aren’t customizable on your home island can be tailored here. Redd auctions artwork pieces, Leif grows produce, and Kick has some rad fashion items up for grabs. Harriet can style up a new hairdo and grant the DIY for easy access on your own island.

8. Happy Home Paradise

Nook Miles does not lack on its insane inventory. Some items are costly too, so players must complete daily tasks to build rack up miles for purchase.

New flowers can be spawned by planting two of the same breed next to each other. It’s never guaranteed, so you’ll have to harvest a lot of them until a lovely new flora forms.

Another yummy feature puts the whisks in players hands. DIY recipes can be redeemed allowing mouth watering dishes to be baked. In order to craft them you’ll need to harvest various vegetation and catch fish. Plant life can be bought from Leif on Harvs Island, or they can be found on boat tours and by visiting random islands at the airport.

A DLC extension was released called Happy Homes Paradise. It’s up for sale via online or can be invested in along with the main game. Decorators and creatives can unleash their imagination by furnishing homes for villagers.

Clients propose their dream house idea then it’s up to you to use related items that fit their wants and needs. Outside and inside embellishments are provided. From indoor lighting ambience to outside greenhouses- combinations have no end.

New clients arrive everyday with oddball traits and personas. Depending if gamers are in a more laid back or spunky mood, they have multiple villagers to choose from. Hours upon hours can be played away in this extension.

9. Silly Sounds and Voices

Silence is not golden within the New Horizons world. Windy wisps and thundering waterfalls echo throughout the island. Musical symphonies and tunes follow players wherever they venture.

There's nothing like the sound of sweet crashing ocean waves and trickling streams. From waterfalls fiercely flowing to the simple “swish” of a butterfly net, the island has sounds galore! Trees whoosh when they are shaken and hum along with the breeze of the wind.

You can bang, chop, and smash your tools , confirming your target with their loud noises. Everything is given an individually unique sound. There is not one living creature, action or resident that isn’t making some sort of clamor.

Jump into the ocean making a great big splash! Run around your island leaving crunching sounds in the grass! Listen to bees and dragonflies zip around your head! You can flaunt a dazzling smile or release sounds of gloom by frowning.

K.K Slider makes an appearance on the island from time to time as well. Once your island receives a 3 star rating, he’ll come and play his songs for the villagers. Songs of his can be purchased in the shop and played on any radio at any time.

Let’s not forget the iconic animals crossing theme song. New tunes and songs have been added to the game too.

One of the most special parts of the game is the residents native language. Sentences of gibberish are thrown together in high and low pitch voices. Your screen translates their foreign tongue so you’re in the loop of what’s going on.

Comical and amusing vocals and orchestra keep your head entertained and inside the magic of your island. With each beep, splash, and bark; gamers will be humming and swaying along to the enchanting island tunes.

10. Timeless Fun for Everyone

Animal Crossing New Horizons offers leisure fun and a creative outlet to people of all ages!

Fantasy, fun, and freedom are the three components that Animal Crossing guarantees. Imagination has absolutely zero limits. Users have free reign to roam anywhere their heart desires.

Plenty new features can be unlocked and discovered with endless creative possibilities. Characters can set off on quests to find materials to craft insane DIY recipes.

Its melodious tunes and spunky residents keep the island teeming with life. New characters are always being introduced to reside in your town.

The Nintendo Switch game is exquisitely pieced together. The 3D graphic structure draws users into the world of animation while musical hymns soothe the soul. Blue winged butterflies and rainbow trout will bring a sense of victory to their catchers.

Iron is one of the most commonly required materials in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Whether you are trying to make your basic tools, or schmexy furniture, or complete the Nook Crime Syndicate’s latest “quest” (constructing houses for other people for free that Tom Nook charges you out the nose for, for instance), you’re going to need iron by the barrel. Never fear; we here at Gamers Decide know all of the best tips and tricks to maximize your iron accumulation, and are here to share our wisdom with you.

5) Mine Your Rocks Daily

Make sure to use the two-hole trick or a similar tactic when mining.

It’s no secret that mining the rocks on your island every single day is by far the best way to get iron ore reliably, especially in the early game. Each rock can be struck up to eight times with either a shovel or an axe, and each time it is struck, it will yield one random resource (unless it’s a money rock; these yield only Bells on each strike). The available options are clay, stone, iron, or gold.

However, once you hit a rock for the first time in a given day, a hidden timer starts. When that timer runs out, you’re done being able to extract resources from that rock for the day. In addition, each hit pushes you back, so to maximize your potential income using this simple method, follow these tips…

Make sure all eight spaces surrounding the rock are open (don’t contain any other items). Resources need a place to spawn, and can’t spawn on top of another item, so it’s imperative that those eight spots be clear.
Make sure that you hit the rock at a steady, rapid rhythm, to ensure eight strikes before the timer runs out. This is the most that can be achieved before any given rock is unable to be mined again in a given day.
Dig 2 holes, creating a corner, facing one of the “corner tiles” in the square of eight spots surrounding the rock, and tuck yourself into the resulting space, before you begin. Since each blow to a rock has recoil involved, without something (like the aforementioned holes) to backstop you, you’ll slide too far from the rock to strike it in short order, which will break your chain of blows and cost you drops.

Pro tip: A fully repaired flimsy shovel can be used to dig 2 holes to brace yourself, and hit the rock all eight times, before breaking. This makes it a near-perfect choice for doing the whole job, as it should take you exactly 1 flimsy shovel per rock per day to harvest the maximum ore on your own island.

4) Blue Balloons FTW!

It’s so PURTY! Wonder what’s inside?

The shovel and the axe are not the only tools that can yield you iron ore, however… the slingshot is handy in this regard as well. Every so often, balloons will spawn on one side of your island or the other. Hanging from these balloons is a present box, which contains something random that may be of use/interest to you. Here’s the skinny on making the most of balloons to harvest additional iron.

Only blue balloons can possibly yield crafting materials, so if you are hunting iron specifically, skip the others, since you’ll just wind up wasting durability on your slingshot.

Balloons always drift from one side of your island to the other, spawning at sea and making their way across your island before vanishing out at sea on the other side. The side that they spawn is either the east or the west side, starting in the morning, and the opposite side after sundown.

Shooting the balloons will release the present, allowing you to collect it, but be careful! If the present lands in a spot that is occupied, it will despawn. This especially includes water, either fresh or salt.

Balloons seem to spawn on a semi-regular schedule, as follows: every ten minute block, at the fourth and the ninth minute, RNJesus decides whether a balloon will spawn. If so, it spawns a little out to sea on the side of your island currently marked as the spawn zone for balloons. From there, it drifts toward your island, and then across it, reaching land at roughly one minute after spawning.

This means that you are best served to wait at the bottom corner of the side of your island where balloons are spawning in the given time period, and then run to the top as the clock is hitting the fourth minute. Keep an eye out for balloons; if you see one, stop and wait for it to come by so you can snipe it.

If not, then wait at the top until the ninth minute, and start running down. Again, if you see a balloon, stop and get it when it drifts over the beach.

3) Mystery Tours For Fun and Profit

Because that’s JUST who I want piloting my plane… a flightless bird. Trying to kill me, Nintendo?!

For a measly donation of Nook Miles, you can print off a ticket that will take you to a Mystery Island, courtesy of the Dodos running the airport. On Mystery Islands, you can often find… more rocks to bash! These rocks, however, have a special caveat: they are way more likely than rocks on your home island to spawn iron ore, dropping it at nearly a 50% rate with every strike. Fewer rocks usually spawn on Mystery Islands than on your home island (an average of 2.5 rocks vs 6), but every nugget adds up. Read on to maximize the benefit of using this trick.

As usual, make sure your tools are in good repair before you start. Especially with the increased drop rate, and the lesser rock count, you want to make sure you get as many chances to hit the rocks as possible.
Also make sure to use the two-hole trick, for the same reason.
Did I mention to make sure that the area around the rock is clear? Good.
If you want to maximize your average iron income, go hunting for rocks on Mystery Islands before you speak to Katrina; good luck and bad luck both skew drop rates negatively for iron on Mystery Islands.

2) Rockin’ the Rocks

Break rocks on Mystery Islands for a shot at additional iron (and other goodies)!

A new player might not be aware, but you can actually break the rocks on your island. This should generally be avoided, as rocks will respawn in random locations, and only one rock can spawn per day, up to your home island’s max of six rocks, so if you go on a rock-breaking binge, you’re gonna be coming up short for a couple of days. Nevertheless, there are ways that breaking rocks can be beneficial in your iron hunt. See below for more details.

Unlike your home island, you can never visit a specific instance of a specific mystery island twice. This means that it doesn’t matter what you do there; feel free to break every rock on the island after you’ve mined it normally. This gives a rock one additional chance to spawn materials.
To do this, finish mining all of the rocks on the island, then eat a few pieces of fruit (any fruit will do). Hit each rock one more time with a normal-quality or better tool (flimsy tools won’t hack it), and the rock will break.
Because tool quality doesn’t impact drop rates at all, try to use non-flimsy tools ONLY for the final bash on rocks that you intend to break. The drop rates from breaking rocks generally wont justify the wear and tear on tools you had to spend iron to make.

1) Trading With Other Players

Not only is the game more fun with a group of friends, it’s potentially more lucrative.

This is by far the most efficient way to get iron, but it has a few caveats. Firstly, you need another person. Secondly, you have to trust them. Last but not least, exchange rates can be a bit murky. But there is indeed a thriving economy of trade in the ACNH community, and often, it’s faster to swap other stuff you already have with players in exchange for needed materials like iron. Here are some basics to get you started.

The market shifts all the time, but in general, two of the best things to offer for trade are spare fossils and *real* artworks from Red’s collection. Any time you see dupes of these (and you will, if you play long enough), nab them and sock them away as trade fodder.
Rare flower starts are always popular, since flower cross-breeding is so frustrating in this game.
Gold nuggets are valid currency with practically everyone.
Nifty decorations can also be used as trade fodder, but are often harder to move.

And there you have it! Using these five methods, you can maximize your iron in for time out, and make all of your crafting dreams in ACNH come true.

Also, while none of these methods technically requires another player, some of them get way more lucrative if you have other islands you can visit on the regular, so if you’re more of a social gamer, get that friend list popping; you’ll not only have more fun, but you’ll make more moolah, too.

5) Fungible Fruit

Diversifying your fruit-folio will make your island both prettier and more profitable.

So, you’ve got a shiny new island in New Horizons. Congrats! Time to become a Bellionaire! Not only is this method of money-making possible right from day 1, but if you start on day 1, it will yield you astronomically increasing profits over time, by using that money as an investment for other methods of earning that require putting cash down.

When you first found your new island town, you’ll find fruit trees all over the island. Give them a shake, and they’ll drop three pieces of your island’s native fruit, which will sell to Timmy in the Resident Services tent for 100 Bells each. However, with recent updates, there’s a new wrinkle in this old method of making money… Perfect fruit.

Perfect fruit has a golden veneer that makes it visually distinct from others of their species, and sometimes a tree will produce a perfect fruit instead of a regular one. Perfect versions sell for six times the normal amount of Bells. If you find any on day 1, though, don’t sell them… plant them! Trees planted from perfect fruit grow perfect fruit, turning this into an early game cash cow you can milk every three days for the lifetime of your island.

Here’s how to start the Bell factory rolling…

Locate and harvest all fruit trees on your island. If you are playing solo, sell all non-perfect fruit to Timmy; otherwise, save some to trade to your friends for THEIR native fruit, if it is different from yours.
If you do manage to swap fruit with a friend, DON’T SELL IT. Tuck it away with your perfect fruit; all of these should be planted as soon as you have access to the flimsy shovel (earliest possible on day 2). Since non-native fruits sell for 5x Bells, these will yield you much more money being planted, even if it takes 3 days to get that investment back.
Whether harvesting your native fruit or foreign fruit, initially, you should be holding back one fruit from every 1-2 trees harvested to plant more fruit trees as soon as you have the flimsy shovel. It will really ramp up your early-game Bell income.
The exception is non-native and perfect fruits. Save ALL perfect fruit initially (especially if it’s foreign, because the multipliers stack), and from foreign fruit harvests, you initially want to sell only one fruit out of every 1-2 harvested trees.
Make sure that you get access to the shovel by day 2 to maximize profits (more on this in the next tip), and to allow you to take advantage of other Bell-making goodness down the road.

4) Net Profits

I’m a hustler, baby… I just wantcha ta know…

Not only is the flimsy net obtainable day 1, but it’s a great way to make money (and the key to unlocking the flimsy shovel as quickly as possible, which is your real money-making tool throughout the game). If you want to get rich quick in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, your very first 400 Bells must be spent on getting a flimsy net from Timmy at Resident Services on day 1. This is because it allows you to start catching bugs immediately.

The flimsy net allows you to catch bugs. These can be sold for Bells (some of them for quite a hefty sum), or given to Flick to craft bug models (which can also be sold for a good chunk of change). However, day 1, they serve another purpose: fulfilling Tom Nook’s bug hunting and fishing mission to get Blathers to the island.

Here’s how to make the most out of your flimsy net…

Remember that the flimsy net can only be used ten times before it breaks. Catch ten bugs with your first net, preferably all different species. Reserve the lowest-price bugs, two or three of them, to turn in as part of your quest with Tom Nook, and sell the rest.
In particular, be on the lookout for any bugs in the stag family, scorpions, and tarantulas, as these are all great for getting a quick influx of cash, especially early game, selling for a few thousand Bells each.
Do not fail to complete Tom Nook’s quest on day 1; you need the shovel unlocked if you want to take advantage of the best money-making methods in this game.

Once you start getting visitors to your island, stop selling bugs to Timmy (or to Nook’s Cranny, once you’ve constructed it); instead, sell them to Flick, as he pays top dollar for bugs. I usually use the first three of any bug that I catch to get a statue from Flick, but that won’t help you profit.

3) Fishing for Funds

Sell it for cash!

Fishing is also possible to start day 1, as you can get the flimsy fishing rod at the same time as the flimsy net. This should be what you spend your second 400 Bells on (the net takes priority because it’s more likely to find pricey bugs than pricey fish in most seasons early game, and you can see for sure what you will get before using the item, which makes it more reliable).

Whenever you see shadows in the water, you can cast your line to land nearby, and soon, some aquatic thing will latch onto your hook. Pull it in fast, or it’ll get away. Sure, sometimes you get junk like old boots or tires, but you can also get some really nice fish. Not only can thesebe sold, but they, like bugs, are the key to the Blathers quest, and therefore, the key to the almighty shovel.

Here’s how to make big Bells from fishing…

Remember, the flimsy rod can at best catch 10 items before breaking, and if you’re unlucky, some of that will be junk. Day 1, keep your cheapest few fish of different species to give to Tom Nook to fuilfill the Blathers quest; sell the rest.
As a general rule, you should fish during days/times when more lucrative fish are likely to appear, and based on whether you are fishing in salt or freshwater, target different-sized shadows at different times to increase the chances of catching something pricey. Nookpedia is your friend when it comes to getting the deets on all the priciest fish.
Like bugs, there’s a collector (named CJ, in this case) who prizes fish highly. Not only can he make you fish models that sell pretty well, but he will buy your fish for a hefty markup over what the Nook Crime Syndicate will pay (I mean… Nook’s Cranny). Once visitors are unlocked, save all fish for sale on days when CJ is showing up.

2) Diggin’ for Dinero

Who says the pandemic tanked the economy? Money grows on trees in my town!

Alright, now you’re in the big-time. If you unlocked the shovel by day 2 like I told you to do in my prior tips, you’ve officially broken the money curve. There are so many ways to make money using the shovel, it’s ridiculous, and while most of them require some time investment, the amount of Bells you can bank even during your first week is frankly insane. Just from the shovel alone, you should be netting an automatic adjusted profit of over 30k Bells daily after day 4, and over 10k per day prior to day 4. Let’s dig in.

Here’s how to make cartloads of cash with your shovel…

See those golden holes in the ground? Dig where they are, and you’ll dig up 1k Bells. Not bad, not bad, free money is after all free… but wait! There’s more! Go to your inventory, and crate a stack of 10k Bells, and replant it in the hole left behind. Three days later, this bag of cash will yield a Money Tree with 30k Bells on it! All you had to do was wait 3 days.
Never plant a money tree using another amount, if you can avoid it. Less invested bells means less yield, and more means a staggering 70% chance that the tree will fail to spawn the right amount of gold. The actual formula used is 3x the planted number of Bells, if successful, though. Hope RNJesus favors you if you try, though.
Because a gold hole spawns every day, you should be hauling in a minimum of 20k a day from this method alone once you hit day 5.
Bash rocks on your island. Each rock can be struck 8 times per day. Not only will this yield crafting materials from which you can make all kinds of lucrative items, but one of your rocks each day will randomly yield Bells instead when struck. If you can hit iteight times consecutively, it will yield 16,100 Bells total.
When bashing rocks, make sure that all of the eight spots around it are empty of items of any kind, in case it’s the money rock.
A new feature introduced in the 2.0 release called luck now influences this, and many other money-making tricks. On a good-luck day, your money rock will yield double money; on a bad luck day, no money rock will spawn. In addition, all of your other rocks are more likely or less likely to yield rare materials like Gold Nuggets based on luck. Note that you can only get a good luck day by talking to Katrina on Harv’s Island.
Use the shovel to dig holes, and plant fruit. You want a wide variety of fruit trees on your island, though you should probably keep only a handful of your native trees and replace the rest with foreign fruit. Always prioritize perfect fruit, especially if foreign; trees grown from foreign fruits that are perfect quality sell for a whopping 3k Bells each, making them one of the best ongoing cash cows in the game.
Dig up regular holes to obtain fossils. If you are a completionist, throw all of them at Blathers to start, but sell any duplicates; many of them sell for a couple grand each.

1) Turnip Tradin’

Screw eating your vegetables; flip ‘em for more money than your mama ever dreamed of!

Those of you who have played prior installments of Animal Crossing will no doubt be familiar with Joan, who runs the Stalk Market in earlier games in the franchise. Well, meet Daisy Mae, her successor, in New Horizons. This little piggy is gonna take you to the market, and I’m gonna tell you how to turn her pricey turnips into a pile of Bells so big it would make Tom Nook soil his trousers.

Strap in, this is gonna be a long one…

Make sure to build Nook’s Cranny ASAP, as it’s the only place to sell turnips.
Daisy shows up on Sundays, from 5 AM to 12 PM. No matter what her asking price is (it will fluctuate between 90 and 110 Bells per turnip), always buy as many turnips from her as you have Bells to pay for. She only sells in batches of ten. If you run out of pocket space, go drop your loot off at your home and come back. Keep doing this until you are flat broke.
In between all of this, make sure you do things like harvest fruit trees, catch and sell bugs/fish, and gather/sell seashells from the seashore. The goal is to buy as many turnips as humanly possible before Daisy nips off at noon each week.
Every morning and evening after Sunday, Nook’s Cranny will set a new price at which they will buy turnips. This price will be a random number within a random range, based upon a pricing pattern that will be unknown to you, the player, at the start of the week.
There are four pricing patterns: High Spike, Low Spike, Decreasing, and Random.
Of these, all but the Decreasing pattern afford you an opportunity to make a minimum of ~35% profit off of your investment, and as high as ~680% if you bought in at 90 and hit a max High Spike. Just keep checking the price each morning and night to determine what pattern you are in.
Decreasing patterns begin with the offered price being less than 100 Bells, and it just keeps dropping. Once you clue in to a Decreasing pattern, you need to either sell all turnips immediately, as it will only get worse the longer you wait, or find a friend to visit (see below).
There’s a loose pattern to what pattern to expect in a given week. If your pattern last week was Decreasing, you’re most likely to see a High Spike this week. If it was a Low Spike, you’re most likely to see a Random pattern this week. If it was a High Spike, youare also most likely to see a Random pattern, and if it was a Random pattern, it will probably be either a Low Spike or a High Spike.
From the preceding, you can tell that, at all times, a Decreasing pattern is the least likely to occur. This means that, on a long enough time table, you are guaranteed fairly sizeable profits, averaging out to over 175% weekly.
However, this number goes up significantly with more friends. Because you can sell turnips on other people’s islands, at the prices being offered at their iteration of Nook’s Cranny, you can always hope for a better price than you’re getting on your island. In fact, with a large enough group of friends willing to host visitors during their price spikes, you can actually guarantee an average of 600% profit weekly, from a statistical standpoint.
If you are stuck playing solo, just use the simple strategy of investing every Bell you have on Sundays every week. Assuming you aren’t spending like a fiend on other things, this will, over time, guarantee you a decently high rate of return, averaging around 200%, compounded weekly. You’ll occasionally lose big, but you’ll make way more than you lose over time.
If you are nervous about absorbing losses, you can either make sure to buy everything you’ll need in the following week prior to investing, or you can set aside half of your profits every week for a “recovery fund”... basically, ensuring that even if you had to eat big losses during a Decreasing week, you still have a big chunk of change to get restarted in the following week (especially since it’s most likely to be a High Spike).
No matter what, make sure that you have sold all of your turnips before Nook’s Cranny closes on Saturday night, because you can’t leave them in the drop box, and any turnips that are on your island when Sunday morning rolls around will rot. However, this is also the best way to attract ants, so if you are a completionist, maybe keep one or two stacks around after your first few investment rounds just to get one to appear.

And there you have it! Follow all of these tips, and you should be well on your way to being a Bellionaire within just the first few weeks. At a conservative estimate, assuming normal cash influx and minimal “frivolous” spending, there’s no reason that you shouldn’t be able to rake in your first million within your first two weeks, with astronomically increasing income after that.

The Nook Miles currency is one of the newest features of the Animal Crossing franchise. They’re useful for airplane travel and purchasing unique items, like exclusive Nook Inc. merchandise. If you’re running out of ways to collect Nook Miles, look no further. I’ve assembled a list of the best methods to get this currency. Each method has detailed steps and valuable information to simplify your hunt for Nook Miles!

5. Check the Nook Miles+ App (Best for Early Game)

Hmm, what tasks should I do today?

Using the Nook Miles+ app is the most efficient way to get Miles, hands down. It’s the most straightforward and accessible method compared to the others; therefore, it’s best for beginners.

Once you open the app, you’ll find stamp cards with daily challenges that provide Nook Miles. Most of the tasks are simple too. For example, talking to your villagers and selling weeds gives you a hefty amount of the currency. Pay special attention to the tasks at the top of your app. Completing these will earn you two or five times the Miles. There’s also no limit to how many tasks you complete daily, so do as many as you can!

How It Works:

Complete as many tasks as possible in your Nook Miles+ app.
Check the app daily.
Be sure to do the ones at the top to get more miles per activity.
Concentrate on completing one task at a time to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

Steps:

1. Press ZL to open your phone.

2. Scroll to the Nook Miles+ app.

3. Press A to open it.

4. If you want to view tasks on stamp cards, scroll over a stamp card and press A to view its details.

5. If you want to view the tasks at the top of the screen, press +.

4. Check the Nook Stop

The Nook Stop is another painless method to collect Miles! It’s an ABD (Automatic Bell Dispenser) where you can store and withdraw Bells, but the machine will also distribute Miles.

The key is to interact with the Nook Stop daily. The device gives you 50 Nook Miles the first time you use it and gradually dispenses more if you’re consistent with your visits. If you miss a day, you’ll start back at 50 Nook Miles and have to work your way up again. You can earn up to 300 Miles a day if you regularly interact with the Nook Stop.

How It Works:

Visit the Nook Stop machine in the Resident Services building.
Do this for a week to earn an increasing amount of Nook Miles.
Afterwards, you’ll earn the same amount of Nook Miles per day.
Don’t miss any days.

C.J. hosts one Fishing Tournament in the spring, summer, fall, and winter. Meanwhile, Flick hosts a Bug Off on the 3rd Saturday of all summer months. Both appear from 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. on the competition days, so don’t miss out if you want those extra Nook Miles!

How It Works:

Participate in every Bug Off and Fishing Tournament.

New Horizons has several events throughout the year, many of which result in Nook Miles. These events range from birthdays to seasonal celebrations! If you participate in all of them, you’ll soon be in Nook Mile paradise!

How It Works:

Take part in events to earn Nook Miles.
You’ll know when these events happen when Isabelle makes an announcement, or you see an NPC walking around.

Birthdays

There’s nothing like celebrating your residents’ birthdays, especially when you get Nook Miles out of them. Unsure of your villagers’ birthdates? Don’t worry! Isabelle always makes an announcement when those happen. You’ll have to visit your villagers’ houses to earn Nook Miles, so remember to bring a gift!

Steps:

1. Pay attention to birthdays in Isabelle’s announcements. If you want a complete list of your villagers’ birthdays, visit Nookipedia.com.

2. Pack a gift for their birthday.

3. Go to the villager’s house when it’s their birthday.

New Year’s Eve Celebration

Celebrations aren’t only for birthdays! There’s more time to party on New Year's Eve! On December 31st, the Resident Services building will be closed, and you’ll see Toom Nook and Isabelle standing on the plaza. The countdown celebration doesn’t start until 11:30 p.m., but you can get party poppers and light sticks beforehand.

Steps:

1. Go to the plaza close to midnight (you could time travel if that’s inconvenient).

2. Angle your camera toward the sky at around 11:59 p.m. so the countdown will start.

3. Wait for the countdown to be complete.

Shooting Stars

Shooting stars soar across the sky every few weeks too! They’ll come the night you see Celeste walking around and Isabelle making the announcement. The shooting stars are only visible at night, so make sure you’re free for this event.

Steps:

1. While out at night, angle your camera upward towards the sky.

2. Press A while unequipped when you see a shooting star.

1. Visit a Friend’s Island

I'm only here for the Nook Miles.

You’re lucky if you have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription and friends who like New Horizons because visiting pals is another great way to earn Nook Miles.

You can earn 800 Nook Miles just by visiting another person’s island. Remember that you’ll only earn Miles from doing this once a day. As a result, visiting two different islands in one day will still net you 800 Miles in total.

How It Works:

Visit a friend's island
Collect the Miles from the Nook Miles+ app.
Do this daily.

Steps:

1. Go to Dodo Airlines.

2. Talk to Orville.

3. Select “I want to fly!”

4. Select “I want to visit someone.”

5. Select “online play” or “local play” (“local play” requires that you’re on the same Wi-Fi as the other person.)

6. If you select “online play,” choose “Search for a friend” once your friend has their gate open on their island. Otherwise, your friend will have to give you a personal Dode Code, and you’ll have to select “Search via Dodo Code” to type it in.

7. If you select “local play,” you should be able to connect with the user immediately.

[Top 10] Animal Crossing: New Horizons Best Island Layout - Which To Choose

Choosing a default island is difficult, and finding inspiration for your town’s layout is harder. That’s why I've made this list of the best default and customized maps! I'll explain the reasoning behind each choice, and help you determine which islands suit your preferences.

[Top 3] Default Animal Crossing Layouts

If you think a handful of default maps exist, you’re incorrect! A Reddit user named gamingchibix found 95 start-up islands after doing extensive research. She also grouped them under three categories: east, south, and west rivers. The names indicate which direction the rivers flow on each land.

After reviewing all layouts, I picked the most appealing ones from each category and ranked them. These are for people who don’t plan to terraform their land, but still want a unique island! My choices are based on the island’s sectioning, placement of the Resident Services building, and other criteria.

3. Best East River Layout

This one comes with a designated middle section!

This category features one river flowing south and another flowing east. As a result, a large piece of land is in the lower right corner. The Resident Services building is on the island's right, and a part of the green land protrudes to the sea on the same side.

The island above caught my eye because of its sectioning. The top, right, and left areas aren’t too spacious or too small for your creative endeavors. There’s also room in the middle for unique decorations, like a monument or an extravagant museum garden. The Resident Services building isn’t far from the center, so you won’t have to walk far to get there.

What’s Great About This East River Layout?

It has an open area on the right side.
There aren’t too many or too few ponds.
All parts of the island are spacious.
You can do a lot with the middle section.
The natural waterscape is pretty.

Choose This East River Layout If…

You don’t feel like landscaping.
You don’t feel like waterscaping.
You like natural-looking islands.

2. Best West River Layout

Wow, it's so evenly spaced!

West river layouts have a river flowing to the west and one to the south. Consequently, a large amount of land is in the lower left corner of the island. Unlike east river layouts, most west river maps have green land extending to the ocean on the left side. The Resident Service building is also on the island’s left.

This specific layout is simple and evenly spaced. The island’s three sections give plenty of space for players to experiment with, and that’s what Animal Crossing is all about! The second tier is also big enough for a separate area. What would you do with that land? The sky’s the limit!

What’s Great About This West River Layout?

The layout is one of the simplest.
It has evenly distributed land.
The rivers curve a little.
The second tier is very spacious.
The ponds are spread out.

Choose This West River Layout If…

You prefer your Residential Area to be on the left.
You want all parts of your island to feel open.
You want a big second tier area at the back of your island.

1. Best South River Layout

It's symmetrical—for the most part.

These layouts are the best because they are the closest you’ll get to a naturally symmetrical island. They usually have a gigantic piece of land at the bottom of the map, since two rivers flow downward. The Resident Services area is often very close to the middle of the island too.

This island is the most symmetrical, making it a lovely view. I advise putting the Able Sister’s Taylor Shop and Nook’s Cranny around the Resident Services building so the area can be a large plaza. Visitors don’t have to walk far to reach it since the site is near the entrance!

What’s Great About This South River Layout?

It’s as symmetrical as you can get with a default layout.
It has plenty of ponds.
The Resident Services building is close to the entrance.
It has a sizeable piece of land on the beach for a lighthouse, a picnic area, and other ideas.
There’s ample open space at the bottom.

Choose This South River Layout If…

You care about symmetry, and you don’t want to terraform.
You don’t want to do any landscaping.
You want your Resident Services area to be near the island's center.

[Top 7] Best User-Customized Layouts

This part of the article goes out to all the dedicated Animal Crossing lovers who took creativity to a new level. The artistry and passion of these players shows in their designs. Although several were left out, here are some of the best Animal Crossing layouts I’ve seen.

7. Gardenia

I never thought of making heart-shaped waterfalls.

This masterpiece of a fairytale island is by Elle. Its layout is for those who enjoy medium-level terraforming with a bit of unique waterscaping here and there. Elle's landscaping skills are challenging to match but don’t feel impossible to master.

The waterscaping drew me to this island. Gardenia's customized rivers don’t appear artificial, giving the layout a natural feel. The creator gives her island an exciting twist, with heart-shaped waterfalls near the entrance and a statue area in the top right corner.

Gardenia has several pathways, but they don’t show on the map since they’re custom-designed. Keep this in mind when planning your map layout in Animal Crossing.

What’s Great About Gardenia?

Its simpler design makes terraforming seem less intimidating to replicate.
The flow of the rivers is natural.
The heart-shaped waterfalls are cute.
The open field to the right leaves room for other creative ideas.
The museum has its own island, which isn’t common.

Choose Gardenia’s Layout If…

You’d like to try terraforming but want to start with something that’s not too complex.
You enjoy hopping on tiny plots of land rather than using a bridge.
You want your villagers to live far apart from each other.

6. Meribella

So. Much. Waterscaping.

Next is the mermaid island of Meribella. This town by Kat, pays homage to the Lost City of Atlantis by incorporating tons of seashells and custom-patterned waterscaping. The waterscaping may seem easy since there aren’t any complicated curves, but it still takes time and patience.

The angular plots of land make the island appear organized; the neighborhood also looks pristine, given its calculated spacing. Kat put every part of the island to good use, so all areas have plenty of room. It’s best to use less tiered land to make your island feel open.

What’s Great About Meribella?

It’s organized.
The spacing between houses is perfect.
The plots are rectangular, so they’re easy to copy.
All the rocks are in one spot.
The waterscaping is beautiful.

Choose Meribella’s Layout If…

You enjoy waterscaping most.
You like open concepts.
You like rectangular plots.

5. Helevorn

The path is so cute!

The natural aesthetic is underrated, but I adore when people incorporate their love for nature into their island layouts. That’s why Helevorn earned a spot on this list. Mellryn’s island is an excellent example of a natural yet striking town. I love how the resident houses are scattered across the island, giving each character their own area to enjoy.

The pathways stand out in Helevorn. It guides people through the island in a way that isn’t confusing or overwhelming, giving the island a cohesive structure. Stepping stones are a great way to diversify your pathways.

What’s Great About Helevorn?

The stepping stones add a unique touch.
The path is clearly defined.
The waterscaping is natural.
The second tier is roomy.
It has lots of ponds.

Choose Helevorn’s Layout If…

You like neighborhoods far apart from each other.

The waterscaping is most memorable compared to other characteristics of this island. The small waterfalls and little plots of land add more flavor to the place. Note how the creator cleverly uses a river and land to divide the neighborhood area from the rest of the island. This is a brilliant alternative to using fences or bushes for sectioning off your village.

Soursapcrossing beautifully expresses her love for greenery and the color pink through her decorations. Although there’s a castle and some statues, she allows plant life to shine in her designs. Almost every spot is filled with pink and green plants, and the color combination is gorgeous.

Soursapcrossing serves us excellent symmetry with Sour Sap. The user's house is centered, giving her abode a sense of royalty. The neighborhood arrangement also ensures residents’ homes don’t impede her creative abilities. This neighborhood design is a great idea if you want to build areas that take up a lot of room.

The neighborhood is far back.
It’s symmetrical.
It has a gigantic second tier.
The museum area is enormous.
There’s a second plaza for Nooks Cranny.

This user’s town is highly satisfying with its finely chiseled rivers and clean-cut neighborhood. Even the bridges are perfectly aligned with each other! You should view the layout as you go when designing islands this symmetrical. You may have to correct some major mistakes if you don’t, and that won’t be fun.

Forget symmetry, we have a genuine work of art here. The Animal Crossing subreddit blew up when a user posted their Blather’s-inspired island. I can’t imagine how long it took to make it!

Of course, Agatas takes the cake regarding complex and satisfying island layouts. The organization of the houses baffles me the most. It’s imaginative and neat, so the houses don’t appear too far apart or too close together. I also admire the craftsmanship of the waterscaping, especially the part below the housing area. The unassessed fossil in the background is the cherry on top.

It won’t be easy to execute this layout. I’d print out a blown-up version of the map if you want to replicate it.

5. Compel Villagers To Give You Iron Nuggets (For Early Game)

Let’s cut to the chase—I need iron nuggets.

Luckily, you live among kind villagers willing to aid you. Use this to your advantage by prompting them to give iron nuggets to you. This method isn’t necessarily easy and may take a while. However, it’s best for beginners because it’s more likely to happen when you need to build Nook’s Cranny.

A villager might call your name and walk up to you. In that case, talk to them. They’ll probably give you an item. You can also start a conversation with a resident, hoping they’ll fork over iron nuggets.

How It works:

Start a conversation with all the villagers.
Wait for the villagers to talk to you.
Do this repeatedly until you get iron nuggets.

Steps:

1. Walk up to a villager.

2. Press A to talk to them.

3. Select the first option.

4. The villager might give you iron nuggets.

5. Do this with all villagers repeatedly until you get iron nuggets.

4. Shoot Present Balloons Out of The Sky

Another way to earn iron nuggets is by shooting balloon presents from the sky. A balloon present will float by every few minutes, and you can use a slingshot to get them down and collect items. Like the previous method, this one takes time since the items in the gifts are random. Patience is key.

Many players think the color of the balloon indicates the items inside. Unfortunately, that’s not true, so knock down every balloon you see. You can hear them blowing in the wind when they’re near, so keep your eyes and ears peeled!

How It Works:

Use your slingshot to shoot down floating presents.
You’ll have to wait around for them.

Steps:

1. Take out your slingshot.

2. Walk under the balloon.

3. Press and hold A to ready your slingshot until the present is directly above you.

4. Release A to send the pebble flying toward the balloon.

5. Press Y to pick up the gift when it falls.

A common way of obtaining iron nuggets is by mining on your island. Every island has six rocks; you can use these as the primary source of iron nuggets.

You need to note several mining tips. First, make sure you’ve eaten nothing prior to mining. Your brute strength will break the rocks. Next, dig two holes behind your character to ensure you aren’t thrown backward too far after each hit. Then, make sure you collect everything around the rock. That way, the materials have space to fall on the ground. Now, you can finally mine!

How It Works:

Use the rocks on your island as a primary source for mining.
Hit them daily to get iron nuggets.

1. Take out your shovel from your inventory.

2. Walk up to a rock.

You can quickly make tons of Bells with proper techniques. In this article, you’ll learn detailed descriptions of the best ways to earn Bells and step-by-step processes to execute these methods.

5. Interact With the Environment Daily (Best for Early in the Game)

I hit the jackpot!

Money grows on trees in Animal Crossing! In fact, you can find it all over your town if you know where to look. This method is best for beginners because it’s painless and requires no strategy.

Shake your trees so they’ll drop coins! 100 Bells fall from each tree per day, but you can make a hefty amount of cash if you shake every tree on your island. Be careful, though. Wasp nests fall from trees too, and they’ll ruin your face in a heartbeat. I recommend carrying a net and medicine in case you run into these deadly insects.

How It Works:

Go to your inventory to take out your net.
Walk up to a tree.
Press A to shake it.
If wasps fall out, press A to catch them.

Remember, the stone spews money for a short time, so you can lose some cash if you aren’t hitting it fast enough. You’ll want to dig two holes behind your character before you strike a rock. This way, you won’t waste time moving closer to it after being knocked back.

For example, 15 clumps of weeds will net you 150 Bells, while using them to make a leaf umbrella provides 300 Bells. Also, pay attention to the “hot item” on the board in front of Nook’s Cranny. These items change daily, and you can sell them for double the price!

Luckily, crafting materials are plentiful on your island! Hit each of your rocks with a shovel up to 8 times to get stones, iron, and clay. You can also use your ax to get different types of wood from trees, but be careful not to chop them down by accident. It only takes three swings to kill a tree, and no one likes a tree killer.

Be sure to get DIY recipes for crafting as well. You can find these at Nook’s Cranny, at an ABD, and in balloon presents. Talking to villagers while they craft in their houses will also get you recipes.

Walk to a crafting table.
Select “Let’s craft!”
Select the item you want to craft.
Select “Craft it!”
Select “Let’s do it!”
Sell the crafted items at Nook’s Cranny.

3. Catch Bugs and Fish

Catching bugs and fish is one of the most lucrative ways to earn money in Animal Crossing. Certain critters of both species are precious, so you want to ensure they don’t escape.

Foremost, you’ll need a net for grabbing bugs. They’re easy to make too! It only takes five branches to make a flimsy net. Then, you’ll need the delicate net and an iron nugget to make a regular net. If you don’t have the materials, buy a flimsy net for 400 Bells or a normal one for 2,500 at Nook’s Cranny.

You're ready to learn how to catch creepy crawlies once you have a net! Many startle easily, so remember to be slow and steady when trying to snag them. You’ll need to inch toward the bug while your net is raised, and strike at the perfect time.

Bugs have more varied activities compared to fish. For example, some rest on tree stumps while others scurry across water. Therefore, it’s best to learn the behaviors of bugs, especially the valuable ones. You’ll be less likely to scare them off and more likely to get the money you deserve!

Tarantulas and scorpions are worth the most at 8,000 Bells a piece, but you’ll have to venture out between 7:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. to get these guys. Catching these two is also tricky, since their bites make you faint. The bigger the risk, the bigger the reward.

I understand if you’re not up for the challenge, though. Some common insects, like wasps and paper butterflies, are worth more than you think. Wasps bring in 2,500 Bells each, while paper butterflies are 1000 Bells.

I suggest saving your bugs for the gothic chameleon named Flick. He’ll buy bugs at 50% more than their selling price at Nook’s Cranny. Although Flick appears for Bug Offs, he’ll also visit your island at random.

How It Works:

Take your net out when you see a bug.
Press and hold A to ready your net.
Slowly inch closer to the bug with the left stick.
Release A when you’re close enough to catch the bug.
Do this with every bug you find.
Wait for Flick to stop by for a bigger profit or sell them at Nook’s Cranny.

As for fishing, you’ll need a rod. You can craft a flimsy fishing rod with five branches, then use that rod to make a durable one. Like the nets, both rods are available at Nook's Cranny for 400 and 2,500 Bells.

Fishing differs from catching bugs; I’d argue it’s a bit more complicated. Be sure to walk, not run, along bodies of water. That way, you won’t scare off any fish by mistake. Most importantly, you’ll need to pay close attention to when the fish grabs the bobber. I recommend listening to the sinking sound to know when to reel in the bait.

Fish bait comes in handy if you’re looking for a specific fish. Only one Manila clam is required to craft it too. Fish will flock to you in any body of water as long as you have bait!

You should use bait so that you’ll be more likely to catch the most expensive fish. Like bugs, many of the rarest fish come out during the evening, from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. The rarest ones include the Great White shark and the Dorado, which both cost 15,000 Bells.

C.J. is like Flick, except the former will buy fish at a 30% higher price and host the Fish Tournament instead of the Bug Off.

How It Works:

Take your fishing rod out of your inventory.
Walk up to a fish.
Press A to cast your line.
Wait until the fish sees the bobber and pulls it underwater.

Go to the Resident Services Building.

The turnips will spoil the following Sunday, so you’ll need to sell them before then. You can make or lose a lot depending on your luck with the prices, so I recommend this method for players who can afford to lose money.

Always remember that prices change twice a day: once in the morning and once in the afternoon. If prices haven’t gone up by Saturday afternoon, just bite the bullet and sell the turnips. It’s better to lose some money than all of it.

If you’re having bad luck with Animal Crossing’s stalk market, use websites like Turnip Exchange and Animal Crossing Exchange. Users will let you visit their islands when their turnip prices are incredibly high. All you have to do is join a queue, follow the instructions, and wait for your turn to get rich!

Find Daisy Mae on Sunday before noon.
Talk to her.
Select “I’ll buy some.”
Enter how many you want to buy or choose “Buy the maximum.”

Genji (3rd Best Jock Villager)

Genji has an I'm-too-cool-for-you look.

This jock rabbit’s stunning appearance hooked Animal Crossing fans. Genji is based on a Japanese nobleman from a book called The Tale of Genji. In previous games, his catchphrase used to be otaku, a Japanese word referring to people with obsessive interests. It was changed to mochi, a Japanese rice cake, in New Horizons.

7. Sisterly Personality

Big sister villagers know how to give solid advice or tough love when needed. They may come across as rude since they’re sarcastic and blunt, but it’s all in good fun. Some of us need thicker skin anyway.

These residents have deeper female voices, showcasing their maturity and tomboyish nature. The most famous residents of this personality are:

Cherry (Best Sisterly Villager)

This dog’s unusual design earned the highest rank because of her punk-rock vibe. The color scheme and silver earrings match her tough-girl attitude. She looks like the older sibling who’d come to your rescue if you were being bullied! It’s definitely best to stay on her good side.

Mira (2nd Best Sisterly Villager)

Call this bunny when you're in trouble!

Yet another superhero-themed character joins the list! Mira isn’t part of Kid Cat’s team, but her red and white outfit is special in its own way. This yellow bunny’s favorite quote is “Always help a friend in need,” which lives up to her caring personality.

Frita (3rd Best Sisterly Villager)

Frita's one of my favorite designs.

This sheep’s design would make her the perfect mascot for a fast-food restaurant. Her name is the Spanish word for “fried,” which explains her french-fry-inspired fur and potato addiction. She’s so cute, I could eat her up—not literally, though.

8. Cranky Personality

Cranky residents are considered the rudest because of their grouchiness. They also gossip about others and know little about trends. However, grumpy residents occasionally offer valuable advice and open up to the player. They may seem rough around the edges, but they have softer sides.

These male villagers tend to have deep voices and glaring faces, which match their irritable dispositions. The most popular cranky characters are:

Fang (Best Cranky Villager)

Don't get into a fight with this guy.

Many adore this wolf because of his lush gray fur and piercing dark eyes. Fang may be handsome, but don’t cross him. His favorite quote is “You mess with the wolf, you get the fang,” and you don’t want to know what that’s like. He also has the education hobby, so he’ll intellectually destroy most villagers in a heated debate.

Roscoe (2nd Best Cranky Villager)

He's a literal dark horse.

Roscoe’s biker-gang aesthetic might intimidate some, but his jet-black design makes him look sleek. Roscoe is also the only cranky horse in the series, so I’d snag him if I were you. This stallion would make a striking addition to anyone’s island.

Static (3rd Best Cranky Villager)

A purple squirrel? Now, that's shocking!

Static’s entire existence references lightning, making him a rare catch. His eyes look permanently disappointed, even while he’s smiling. He has also been an aspiring guitarist since his first appearance in the Animal Crossing franchise. I hope the purple guy reaches his dream someday.

11. Simple Wooden Fence

This DIY recipe is for a wooden fence. There’s a variety of fences in New Horizons, and they have a few uses. While they can’t be used inside, they can be great as decor, part of a forced perspective illusion, or guide rails for a path. The limit is your own creativity. However, this fence,in particular, is the best of all the fences because of how easy it is to acquire, its simple style, and the minimal materials required.

Versatile

Fences can’t be used inside, but they can be used for a lot. Plenty of people will use fences to create boundaries, like for yards around their houses.

Others have created mazes out of them. Plus, they are one of the few fences that are color customizable, and their simple style makes them easy to use in all sorts of situations.

Materials

The only thing this fence requires is 6 pieces of softwood per set. Not only is this not a lot, but softwood is the most commonly found type of wood in New Horizons. It’s so common that many online forums joke about it when hunting down hardwood or normal wood pieces.

This means that players building this fence won’t have to worry about running low on a crucial material. In fact, you might even be grateful to finally find a use for it.

Easy to Get

The simple wooden fence DIY is one of the first few DIYs available to the player upon unlocking fences. This means you won’t have to spend days or weeks or even months hunting it down or scraping together valuable items to trade for this recipe online. 10. Glow-in-the-Dark Stickers

This item was released during the 2.0 update. Glow-in-the-dark stickers can’t be used outside, but they’re still incredibly useful since they can be customized to take on different shapes.

This includes custom designs, which can be used to make illusions or even huge murals. This is really useful, especially for how easy it is to make.

Versatile

Glow-in-the-dark stickers can be used for all sorts of things, from just accentuating the interior of the home, to making an entirely different wall out of custom designs. Plenty of images of players using them to create fake wall-to-floor windows or French doors in their homes have gone viral since the 2.0 update dropped.

This makes it a great item for anyone, regardless of the theme of their house or island or even their art skills. Players can just download some designs from the custom design portal as long as they have Nintendo Online.

Simple Materials

These stickers only take 5 pieces of glowing moss. This is a very small amount, and also very easy to get, assuming you have the Paradise Planning DLC.

The Paradise Planning resort has glowing moss and vines near the hospital, which will respawn daily. However, for those who do not have this DLC, the only ways to access this material is to either arrive by happenstance at a Kapp’n island with glowing moss or to trade for it online with other players.

Cute

While some might argue that this shouldn’t count as a category, I beg to differ. I think it’s incredibly important for furniture to look good, especially for what is mostly a decorating game.

As a normal item, the glow-in-the-dark stickers have several forms that they can come in using the customization kits. Most of these, such as music notes or hearts, are very cute accents to any room.

9. Organic Bread

This is another recipe that came in the 2.0 update. However, this is the first item on our list that’s actually food!

Organic bread is part of one of the first batches of cooking recipes players receive once they unlock cooking in New Horizons. It’s cute and has multiple uses!

Gain Strength

New Horizons implemented a new feature in the Animal Crossing franchise, which is for players to gain strength whenever they eat or drink things. This allows players to do things like shovel up trees to put in their pockets or destroy pesky rocks with a single shovel swing. Players can gain up to 10 strength points at a time before needing to expel them to gain more.

Eating organic bread gives you 5 strength points in one go, which is really useful compared to the free alternative of raw fruits and vegetables, which give only 1 per fruit or vegetable. So the next time you need to rearrange some trees, consider taking two servings of organic bread instead of ten coconuts!

A Nice Accent Piece

Food doesn’t just count as, well, food. It can be placed in-world as well, like a furniture item. Since they don’t spoil or become inedible, and they look much larger than hand-held drinks or fake food items, they make for great decoration.

Whether it’s for your bakery build or a picnic, or even to liven up a living room, food like organic bread is a great option. Especially if you’re sick of plucked flowers and potted plants!

A Housewarming Gift

Like plenty of items, cooked food can be given to villagers on your island as long as they’ve been there for at least a few days. The length of time is shorter if you speak to them regularly, but generally, three days is what it takes to be able to give gifts to villagers.

Gift-giving is a great way to become closer to your neighbors, which comes with benefits such as letters with gifts, having them drop by your house to spend time with you, and even getting their picture- the ultimate reward of friendship in New Horizons. Different personalities have different tastes, but usually, gifts like food do well across the board- and that’s especially true with cooked food.

Easy to Make

The recipe for organic bread calls for 3 whole-wheat flour portions, which isn’t much. Especially considering each batch of whole-wheat flour comes with 10.

And since whole-wheat flour is the only ingredient for organic bread, this makes it an incredibly easy recipe, both for gathering and making the ingredients. Whole-wheat in itself only takes 5 wheat portions, just like normal flour, so this is truly a simple recipe for such a useful item.

Easy to Get

As mentioned before, the organic bread recipe comes in one of the first batches of recipes you get when you first unlock cooking. After unlocking cooking, just go to Nook’s Cranny to the display case to the right and scroll to find “Basic Cooking Recipes”.

8. Lily Record Player

Next on this list is the lily record player. This allows players to play any of K.K. Slider’s music that they’ve gained either through listening to him play or buying them with Nook Shopping, at all hours of the day. This adorable music player isn’t the easiest to make, but it’s still easy and definitely the most useful.

Cute

This is easily the cutest music player a beginning New Horizons player could ever make. And as a decorating game, cuteness and overall aesthetic appeal is definitely a priority. While it might not be everyone’s favorite, it’s undeniably a good one.

Plays and Stores Songs

As a music player, any and all music you collect can be added to it and played whenever, wherever you want. Music- made exclusively by the only musician, K.K. Slider- can be either bought through the Nook Shopping catalog or received for free by K.K. himself after watching him play live on Saturday evenings.

And don’t worry- no matter how many new music players you buy, they all have access to the same set of music you have, as long as it’s been added to at least one music player. And who doesn’t like music?

Easy to Make

All it takes to make a lily record player is 3 pieces of wood, 3 iron nuggets, and 5 white lilies. This is a bit more than the shell speaker, but it’s definitely no sweat. Lilies can be bought either at Nook’s Cranny or from Leif, who will come to players’ islands once every few weeks with a new rotation of plants.

After three days, your lilies will be fully grown and ready to pluck, which can be sped up with time travel. Just collect, craft, and marvel at your new lily record player!

Versatile

As mentioned, the shell speaker is easier to make. However, the lily record player is definitely the best DIY record player, because to be honest, the shell speaker isn’t as cute. It’s much more of a niche style than the lily record player.

A giant shell, music player or not, isn’t as easy to blend into a room or cafe as a lily-shaped one. Giant shells are more associated with beaches or tropical-themed places, whereas flower-shaped or patterned things are more commonly used in all sorts of places, making the lily record player by far the more versatile item, and therefore more useful.

7. Fish Bait

Fish bait is one of the first DIY recipes a player usually gets when they start playing. In a way, this also makes it one of the easiest to get. This plus their extreme usefulness makes them one of the best DIY recipes, earning them their place on this list.

Easy to Get

The fish bait DIY recipe is super easy to get. All you need to do is go to any part of your beach with a shovel, then walk around until you see a tiny dark spot, and then a stream of water squirt out of the sand.

Take your shovel and dig at that exact spot. This will give you a manila clam, the ingredient for the fish bait. Digging up the clam will give your character the idea to use it to make fish bait, which unlocks the recipe.

Simple Materials

Fish bait only requires one manila clam per portion. This is great since manila clams are also both free and easy to find.

Just by wandering your beaches, you can collect pocketfuls of manila clams- just be sure to have either a strong shovel or a lot of them! After that, just get to crafting!

Helps You Catch (Rare) Fish

This fish bait is, as the name suggests, for baiting fish. If you’re ever having a hard time finding or successfully catching fish, this is a great option for you. Just go to any body of water you can fish in, open the bag to release the bait, and watch as a fish immediately appears!

Using bait doesn’t just attract fish, though. It has a decent likelihood of attracting rare fish, which is helpful for anyone from the bell collectors to the museum completionists.

Can’t Be Bought

While some DIY items can either also be bought in stores or have alternatives that can be bought in stores, fish bait is a DIY recipe exclusive. This makes the recipe itself that much more important. The only way to get fish bait is to make it yourself!

6. Medicine

Bee or wasp stings are a long-running scourge for players in the Animal Crossing franchise. For as long as Animal Crossing has existed, so have the dreaded wasps.

Shaking trees without fruits in them runs the risk of earning several things: furniture, branches, seasonal materials, nothing, and the worst of them all, a wasp nest. There’s only one in-game remedy for the poor fellows who can’t outrun the wasps: medicine.

Easy to Make

Medicine only requires two things: a wasp nest, and 3 clumps of weeds. Considering the situation, wasp nests are usually immediately at your disposal. Weeds overrun the island when you first begin the game, and consistently pop up afterward, threatening to spread and run rampant (as weeds do) unless the player plucks them regularly.

This makes medicine super easy to make since as long as you haven’t sold all of your weeds, you should be able to make at least one of these. If not, going to a Nook Mile island could also work, since beginners are given a free ticket when they begin the game.

Easy to Get

All a player needs to do to get this recipe is to get stung by a bee, then go speak to any villager. The villager will provide the poor player with this DIY. However, they will only do this once per player- so be sure not to lose it, since it’s not confirmed if you will get another one if you don’t learn the recipe.

More Than Just Wasps

Medicine takes away the wasp sting of your unfortunate character. However, that’s actually not the only use it has. Occasionally, villagers will fall victim to a cold and will be trapped and miserable in their homes for at least a day.

When this happens, giving them medicine will cure them. On top of that, the grateful villager will give the player a gift out of thanks, and this will also bring them closer as friends, making this a more appealing alternative to just ignoring the poor villager and making them wait out the cold.

Free Alternative

While medicine can be bought at the store for just 400 bells, that’s still 400 more bells than 0. Which is what making medicine with this DIY would cost.

And considering how often players- especially beginner players- get stung by these wasps, those 400 bells could add up quickly, making this a good investment. Especially for those that don’t necessarily have spare bells just lying around.

5. Sugar

Sugar is another recipe that was introduced in the 2.0 update. As a cooking ingredient, it’s extremely useful because of how often it’s used in all the other food DIYs. It comes in the very first batch of cooking recipes you get after unlocking cooking.

Easy to Get

All you need to do to get this recipe is to unlock cooking. This can be done by going to the Nook Stop at Resident Services and claiming the “Be a Chef! DIY Recipes+” reward from the Nook Miles Redemption category. It costs 3,000 miles to unlock, which is easy to achieve, especially for beginning players who get rewarded sometimes just for playing the game.

Easy to Make

All it takes to make sugar is 5 pieces of sugarcane. As long as you have sugarcane, which can be received by either buying seeds from Leif or stumbling upon them on an island Kapp’n sends you to, you can make sugar.

The sugar also comes in 10 portions each time, which is a lot- especially since none of the recipes call for more than 2 portions. However, cooking food can only be done on stoves or sinks, not DIY benches- which isn’t a huge obstacle, since not only can cooking stations be made easily, but many of them are sold at very low prices.

A Crucial Ingredient

There are two types of sugar in New Horizons: this sugar (known as just sugar) and brown sugar. Between the two, “normal” sugar is used the most, being utilized in 34 of the 141 new cooking recipes.

Brown sugar, on the other hand, is only used for 2. This makes sugar the second-most used cooking ingredient besides flour, which makes it very important for anyone interested in cooking.

4. Flour

Also released in the 2.0 update, flour is the most important cooking DIY ingredient. It’s simple, easy, and almost impossible to cook without. It comes with sugar in the first batch of DIY recipes you receive after unlocking cooking.

Easy to Get

All you need to do to get flour is the exact same steps as sugar. After saving up 3,000 miles, go to Resident Services and access the Nook Stop on the right.

Click on “Nook Miles Redemption”, then scroll until you find “Be a Chef! DIY Recipes+” and select it. It will immediately teach you several DIYs, one of which will be flour.

Easy to Make

All it takes is 5 pieces of wheat to make 10 portions of flour. This is beyond useful, especially for the amount of flour you’ll need to make all the recipes in New Horizons. Like all other special plants and vegetables, wheat can either be bought from Leif or found on Kapp’n islands.

Very Useful

Out of 141 cooking recipes available in New Horizons, 72 of them require flour. In total, 155 portions of flour are needed to make each item once. This makes flour the singular most important cooking ingredient in all of New Horizons, even more than whole-wheat flour, which is needed for organic bread.

In fact, the alternative for organic bread would be bread, which is made with flour instead of whole-wheat flour. However, since the bread recipe is much harder to get than the organic bread recipe , it is not on this list.

3. Wooden Full-Length Mirror

Breaching the top 3 is the wooden full-length mirror. This takes third place in a close call against the wooden tabletop mirror. Its biggest edge against such a similar item is its versatile nature.

Easy to Get

The wooden full-length mirror is one of two possible first-ever DIY recipes players can get from the beach. The other option is the wooden tabletop mirror.

This makes it very easy to get since all players need to do is walk along the shoreline until they find a bottle on the floor. Picking it up and opening it will give them the DIY.

All it takes to make the wooden full-length mirror is 1 iron nugget and 5 pieces of wood. The wooden tabletop mirror takes less, but this is still a very simple and easy recipe for players who are starting out and short on materials. Depending on luck, you might be able to collect this amount after just axing 2 trees and hitting 1 rock.

Versatile

This is what ultimately makes the wooden full-length mirror the best mirror, even compared to the tabletop mirror. Most tables are very small, especially ones used for bedrooms, making surface space very limited.

This means players try to use as little of it as possible, making a full-length mirror a better option than the tabletop mirror, since it can be placed on the floor. Plus, the style of the full-length mirror is much more adaptable for different themes and aesthetics, ultimately making it the best choice.

2. Wooden Storage Shed

Yet another DIY recipe introduced in the 2.0 update is the wooden storage shed. This one by far needs the most materials, but the cost is well worth the reward. This is especially useful for players that are still creating and designing their islands.

Incredibly Useful

The wooden storage shed allows players to access their storage outside of their homes. Previously, players could only access storage when they were inside the house. However, this storage shed is essentially a portable portal that allows them to get whatever items they want, whenever they want.

This is super useful since it means you no longer have to sprint back and forth across your island trying to get everything you need, only to forget what you needed and have to go back and forth all over again. Now you have all of your storage right in your pocket!

Simple and Versatile

While there’s an alternative to the wooden storage shed- an item simply known as the storage shed- it can only be redeemed from the Nook Stop as an item and not a recipe. Plus, the storage shed is bigger and has a much more industrial look to it, which doesn’t always fit the themes and styles of people’s islands.

The wooden storage shed, on the other hand, is half the size. It takes up only 1 square instead of 2, and is more versatile in style, allowing it to fit a wider range of aesthetics and themes.

Easy to Get

All you need for the DIY is 6,000 Nook Miles. While this is definitely much more than any other item on this list, this is not only a really useful item, but it’s also a recipe that you don’t need to hunt down. Most of the 630+ recipes can only be found by either speaking to a villager while they’re crafting or finding them in a bottle by the beach.

This makes collecting DIYs difficult since there’s only one bottle on the beach per day and only a few items a villager can give you, and both will repeat DIYs you already have, which is what often leads players to trade online instead of waiting. But since not everyone has Nintendo Online, this is a relatively easy way to get DIY recipes in comparison, especially for such a valuable item.

The number one ultimate, most important recipe is the simple DIY workbench! While this definitely comes as a surprise for some, it actually makes perfect, almost ridiculous sense. This is one of the first DIYs given to the player upon starting the game, and it wouldn’t be possible to play without it.

Easy to Get

As soon as players start the game, Tom Nook will give them a handful of DIY recipes to get them started. One of the first DIYs available to the player after they’ve gotten through the tutorial is the simple DIY workbench. It is genuinely impossible to go through this game without ever receiving this recipe, making it one of the easiest recipes to get in the game.

Easy to Make

All it takes to make such an important item is 5 pieces of hardwood and 1 iron nugget. You’d think it would take much more to make one of the biggest features in the game, but it’s not. And for those just starting out in New Horizons, this is definitely a lifesaver.

Super, Super, Unbelievably Useful

Of course, to craft the bench, you’d need another bench. Tom Nook provides the player with a free workbench to use during the tutorial phase that is still available to the player for the rest of the game. However, this bench can’t be moved and is inside of Resident Services for the entirety of the game.

While you technically don’t need to make another bench and can always use this one, you’ll run into the same problem as item storage: when you’re crafting literally anything, you’ll have to go running all the way to Resident Services just to make a single item. And when you’re in the building and decorating phase of your island, the last thing you’ll want to do is have to go back and forth a million times because your shovel keeps breaking, or you need to craft some furniture and then run back to put it down.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is one of the most popular design-related games in the world. It features all kinds of customization and creation options for creating anyone’s dream island.

This allows players’ creativity to flourish, and births a ton of amazing and unbelievable islands. But not every one of them can make this list, so read to find out which islands are the most amazing!

10. Moonset Island by Leanne

Starting off this list strong is Moonset island by Leanne! Moonset island is a forest-themed island with lots of terraforming and waterscaping. It was awarded five stars by Isabelle, and it clearly shows!

Simple

Moonset island focuses on the beauty of simplicity. It features natural wood furniture like wild log benches and log stakes. Most of the island is taken by plant life, such as flowers, bushes, and trees.

Scenic

Moonset island’s simplicity doesn’t make it plain. In fact, its lack of elaborate illusions or furniture-cluttered rooms allows it to focus on larger, natural scenery instead. The island is filled with waterfalls, winding streams, and flower-filled cliffs instead. This gives the island a bright, inviting feeling.

Cohesive Scheme

The color scheme on Moonset island is a selection of white, beige/brown shades, and green. These colors go very well together and don’t clash at all, making the island very pleasing to the eyes.

They also fit the theme of the island, giving it a bright but soft feeling. The rest of the island’s selection of furniture and custom pathways and signs also contribute to this. All of it ties together perfectly into the simple but pretty forest theme.

9. Moon Island by Colin

The next is the similarly named Moon island, by Colin! This island has a “Halloween in the suburbs” theme, which is pulled off creatively and beautifully. Visitors will love this tiny town of spooks!

Color Scheme

Colin’s selection of colors fits Moon island perfectly. The various shades of yellow, brown, orange and red bring the signature autumn vibes. None of the colors clash. In fact, they compliment each other well while also remaining appropriate for both the theme and the season.

The greatest charm of Moon island is its creativity. Colin utilizes all sorts of methods to create whatever they need for their island, especially when certain things don’t exist. For example, they utilize lots of custom designs to create anything from a toilet-papered house to diagonal roads.

A Popular Theme

Halloween is the fourth most celebrated holiday in the world. This makes Moon island’s Halloween theme extremely relevant and appealing to visitors. This island will be sure to attract all sorts of guests, and bring inspiration to players with unfinished islands!

8. Aurelia Island by Daisy

Aurelia island is a vintage-themed island. It comes with a lot of natural scenery and whimsical energy. The creator’s Resident Representative is Daisy.

Very Scenic

Aurelia boasts plenty of beautiful natural scenery. It features forests, flowers, and natural landscapes. The streams, waterfalls, and cliffs were carefully crafted by Daisy to create the pretty and natural looks of the island.

Fitting Colors

The color palette for Aurelia mostly consists of neutral colors such as white, beige, and brown, as well as plenty of green from the plant life. While some might consider this plain or boring, Daisy manages to make it not only interesting but pretty as well.

The simplicity of the colors allows guests to focus on the beauty of the natural landscape instead of being distracted by bright colors. It gives the island a sunny vintage vibe.

Creative

Much like every island on this list, Aurelia is very creatively made. Plenty of sections and structures are made almost exclusively through custom designs, such as the diagonal roads and the outdoor picnic blankets and rugs- all of which are features not otherwise allowed in the game. Seemingly random yet fitting items, such as cushions and books and giant mushrooms are placed about the island as well, giving Aurelia its whimsical side.

7. Sage Island by Leaf

Sage island is a desert town-themed island. Its Resident Representative is Leaf. It features elaborate forced perspective illusions and creative execution of designs.

Unique Theme

Sage island’s desert town theme is very unique. Since giving the island a desert look when it’s full of grass and trees is difficult, this theme isn’t very common. This can be appealing to guests, who won’t have seen this kind of town before.

Creative

When creating a desert out of a fruitful island, it’s unsurprising that it takes a bit of creativity to pull off. Still, Sage island goes above and beyond. To create proper canyons or desert hills, the creator collected an enormous amount of termite mounds to repurpose into sand mounds.

Custom design paths were also used, from making fake sand or dirt to roads and picnic blankets. They even created a fake building out of storefronts.

Elaborate

Part of the creativity of Sage island includes its elaborate setup. While it would still be considered creative to make fake buildings and call it a day, Sage island truly goes above and beyond to not only make the island look good, but also realistic.

From an irrigation system for their farm to a Route 66 complete with traffic lights and actual cars and trucks. One of the most impressive parts is certainly the fake canyon with a waterfall, and the view of it in the distance players can enjoy from a cliff’s edge.

6. Pickleton Island by Pickle

Our next island is called Pickleton! Interestingly enough, its Resident Representative is Pickle. Ironically, this island is not, in fact, pickle-themed. It is instead a breathtaking “rural town meets castlecore” island.

Undeniably Pretty

First and foremost, it’s important that an island is appealing in some way. The meaning behind this is that it shouldn’t be hard to look at.

If visitors find the island ugly or plain, they won’t want to visit. So whether it's scary or elegant, pretty or terrifying, there needs to be some kind of appeal. And Pickleton is certainly pretty.

Awesome Aesthetic

Rural towns and castlecore are very popular themes within the New Horizons community. However, few can manage to create a stunning mix of both. Pickleton does exactly that, mixing both castle structures with storefronts and cars to make a stunning little town settled in an abandoned castle.

Easy Navigation

Despite how full of furniture and decor the island is, Pickleton somehow keeps from being too cluttered and confusing to navigate. Even without using a map, getting lost is more of a difficult task than not. The island’s clear pathways, lined with buildings and flowers, are both scenic and helpful.

5. Dummyville Island by Dummy

Much like Pickleton, Dummyville is named after its Resident Representative, Dummy. Also like Pickleton, it is nothing like its name would suggest. Dummyville is an island filled with abandoned magical ruins.

Amazing Aesthetic

Dummyville boasts a magical set of ruins, complete with glowing moss and crumbling pillars. Its beauty is almost ethereal, in part from its glowing star clocks and moons. Vines creep across its cliffs, and statues and altars are scattered amongst the ruins, making it truly feel as if something magical was laid to rest and forgotten there.

Cohesive

Everything in Dummyville fits. From the butterfly models to the villagers, the only thing that doesn’t seem to feed into the aesthetic is the name of Dummyville itself.

Resident Representative Dummy made sure to select only the most magical of residents, such as Julian the unicorn-inspired horse, Judy the glittering bear cub, and Ione, the celestial glowing squirrel. Rare flowers add to the touch of its mystique.

Elaborate and Detailed

An island this beautiful couldn’t be done without detail and dedication. Many of the items are difficult to get, with most of the DIY materials being rare, such as star fragments.

Not only are there plenty of these items on Dummyville, but their placements and the structures built around them are elaborate and intricate, even inside the homes. It takes time, effort, and careful planning to create the illusion of a massive castle, which is precisely what Dummy did, using castle walls, pillars, and residential homes.

4. Moondust Island by Yuna

It seems that misleading names are a common trend for the best New Horizons islands. Moondust is a terrifying horror island. Created by Resident Representative Yuna, its deceitfully soft name will give visitors a false sense of security when arriving at this rainy zombie land.

Unique Theme

Moondust is the only island on this list with a zombie apocalypse theme. While others have certainly created all manner of scary or spooky islands, it can be difficult to pull off, since Animal Crossing is a kid-friendly franchise.

This means creators often have to put in even more effort than usual into creating something truly horrifying. This makes Moondust unique and even appealing to players who want to see something new and well done.

Horrifyingly Imaginative

As stated before, scary islands are especially difficult in Animal Crossing. Most spooky items are more on the “scary-cute” end, to not terrify any of the younger players. As a result, scary-themed islands have to rely on their own creativity and imagination to bring their visions to fruition.

Moondust utilizes custom designs and seemingly innocuous items such as campfires and termite mounds to create their desired apocalyptic atmosphere. To get the player further into the spirit, they even gift visitors with an ax upon arrival, as if to defend themselves from the zombies.

Elaborate and Detailed

Resident Representative Yuna certainly went all out. From disturbingly well-done blood splatter to broken windows and giant ‘help’ signs in blood, they made sure to paint a vision of a town destroyed and overrun by zombies.

Many of the structures are forced perspectives and realistic town structures, such as junkyards or tech stores made of flatscreens and neon signs. The sky's the limit for Yuna, who clearly doesn’t intend to allow the game’s furniture limitations to stop them from creating a proper apocalypse.

3. Sonder Island by Rosalie

Finally into the top 3 is someone certainly deserving of the honors. Sonder island is a breathtaking botanical garden island. Its Resident Representative and sole human villager is Rosalie.

Scenic

Sonder is a botanical garden island. As such, having beautiful scenery everywhere is almost par for the course.

Still, it takes effort and dedication to create an island that consists entirely of photogenic scenery. Guests will be sure to find this appealing, whether it’s to take pictures of their own or simply enjoy walking through the pathways and enjoying the view themselves.

Perfect Atmosphere

Rosalie makes sure to create an atmosphere that suits the theme of a botanical garden island. Sonder is bright and inviting, much like any picturesque garden or meadow would be. The flowers and furniture are vibrant without being painful to look at, and there’s a wide range of them to keep from being monotonous without them clashing.

Cohesive

The cohesion on Sonder island is one of the biggest contributors to this perfect atmosphere. As previously mentioned, there’s a variety of colors on the island. The palette is a selection of pink, white, yellow, orange, green, and blue.

All of the shades are bright without being obnoxious. The colors selected for each section complement each other well, and it all comes together perfectly.

2. Camen Island by Annie

Coming in second place is Camen Island! This is a fantastic Christmas-themed island, for all your festive winter needs! Their Resident Representative goes by annie, with an intentional lowercase “A”.

A Well-Loved Aesthetic

Christmas is the most celebrated holiday in the entire world. This makes it an extremely relevant and appealing theme for a wide variety of guests. This island would sure put anyone who likes Christmas into the holiday spirit!

Scenic

Every inch of Camen island is aesthetically pleasing. This makes it perfect for photo-ops or just having a lovely stroll. Visitors would love taking pictures for social media or simply imagining themselves living in an eternal Christmas winter wonderland.

Easy Navigation

As lovely as many of the more elaborate islands are, it’s an unfortunate side effect that some of them have the tendency to be difficult to navigate. With an abundance of items often causing switches to lag or clutter up a space, some players will easily get lost in more complicated island builds even with their maps.

Fortunately, Camen island manages to have a lot of decor without obscuring any pathways. The walkways are mostly wide and clear, so players can freely explore without fear of getting stuck or lost.

1. Wonderland Island by Tigerlily

Finally, here is our number one best, most amazing island! Last but certainly not least is Wonderland island by Tigerlily! This island is a stunning sprawling botanical garden set in a castlecore town.

An Immaculate Aesthetic

Wonderland’s castlecore garden town is a combination of some of the most aesthetically pleasing and popular themes currently circulating online. As such, this aesthetic is one of its biggest selling points. Who wouldn’t want to stroll down a delightful winding stone path surrounded by flowers and old castle walls? It truly lives up to its name.

Creative and Elaborate

While this is definitely one of the most common points on this list, it certainly takes a lot of effort to come up with and properly execute a design for an entire island. It deserves to be commended.

Especially when creators go above and beyond to not only create items that don’t exist, but build huge structures using a couple of strategically-placed items. And Tigerlily certainly went above and beyond in this category, repurposing anything from storefronts to lighthouses to make giant multi-level buildings.

Scenic

As mentioned, Wonderland island is incredibly stunning. Unsurprising, since it’s a giant garden! There are flowers everywhere, as well as stone walls and paths and lovely waterfalls. There isn’t a single place on this island that wouldn’t make an amazing backdrop for pictures!
