15 Horror Movies That Need a Reboot

Seeing a horror movie with such promising potential is such a rare sight these days, making it all the more tragic when that potential isn't realized or, even worse, when there are no more sequels. These exciting flicks might only make a stunning comeback with the aid of movie reboots.

And no other movie deserves a reboot, other than these 15 horror movies on the list.

15. Leprechaun (1993)

Leprechaun follows Tory (Jennifer Aniston) along with a group of other survivors as they are terrorized by the titular evil creature, Leprechaun, in search of his beloved pot of gold.

The Leprechaun franchise has received two, three if you count Into the Hood, reboots. It’s a franchise so cheesy yet charming at the same time, one that isn’t afraid to poke fun at everything. Although none of the films in the franchise are ever really that great in the franchise, they are all still worthy films to watch.

However, this doesn’t need to be the case anymore. Maybe if a reboot were to be released today, not only will it deliver laughs, but as well as genuine scares. This might just help solidify the Leprechaun franchise as a solid entry in the horror genre.

14. Splinter (2008)

Trapped in an isolated gas station by a voracious Splinter parasite that transforms its still-living victims into deadly hosts, a young couple and an escaped convict must find a way to work together to survive this primal terror.

Splinter provided the thrills, chills, and creativity in the familiar zombie subgenre. It’s a film that delivers intensity from beginning to end, and many disgusting-looking creatures make each scene hard to watch and stomach.

The film’s only issue being its frantic camera movement which makes viewing the film’s gnarly scenes kind of a bit not understandable. But hey, maybe with a proper reboot, not only will this issue be remedied but some of the most intense moments seen in its forerunner might just return.

13. Stay Alive (2006)

For a group of teens, the answer to the mysterious death of their old friend lies within the world of an online video game based on the true story of an ancient noblewoman known as the Blood Countess.

Stay Alive is one of those cheesy 2000s horror films that time had forgotten, and it’s a shame because the film’s premise is just as relevant as ever. Giving us an immersive viewing experience that aims to deliver horror in the real world and in a virtual world.

Maybe with a reboot, every improvement that the gaming industry had implemented might just be used to great effect, along with taking influence from many digital horror films to provide us with one of the most memorable horror movies in recent memory.

12. Saw (2004)

Two strangers awaken in a room with no recollection of how they got there, and soon discover they're pawns in a deadly game perpetrated by a notorious serial killer named Jigsaw.

While the Saw franchise may still be receiving multiple sequels, with its most recent installment being Spiral, released in 2021. However alive it may be though, it can’t be denied that the franchise had become very much convoluted with its so many unnecessary sequels and plot twists.

Jigsaw, which was a pseudo reboot of its own, almost manage to provide us with a decent simplification of the horrific games, however, what we truly need is a reboot that starts from scratch. A film that would disregard those plot twist after plot twist, to create an atmospheric entry that’s more akin to its first film.

11. Cold Prey (2006)

Five young Norwegians head up to the mountains to snowboard. One breaks his leg and it's getting dark soon, so they spend the night in a big, abandoned hotel, that closed 30 years ago. They are not alone.

Cold Prey is one of those overlooked foreign slasher films that just never got the recognition that it rightfully deserves. A film that packs in many brutal and creative kills, a refreshing setting, and a menacing killer. What simply could you ask for in a slasher?

Well, unfortunately, the franchise’s final film was back in 2010, with no other news of a new film after it. Just imagine a new entry, one that is more brutal than had come before, and maybe a possible English entry, one that will bring the franchise into the mainstream.

10. The Descent (2005)

A caving expedition goes horribly wrong, as a group of female explorers become trapped and ultimately pursued by a strange breed of predators.

The Descent is one of those films that just never fails to make you feel unnerved thanks largely to its outstanding atmosphere, creepy monster design, and claustrophobic setting that will make anyone afraid of dark and tight places.

It’s a shame however that the sequel that it did spawn ended up tarnishing what made its forerunner great, giving us a lesser experience that ended up being underwhelming. Now, this time would just be the perfect time to release a reboot of sorts where the events of the second film would be disregarded in favor of a more polished sequel.

9. Cherry Falls (2000)

In the small town of Cherry Falls, a psychotic murderer is killing off the virgins of the local high school. And in the hopes of stopping the killings, the teenagers decided to plan a sex party to avoid the serial killer.

Cherry Falls was released after Scream’s meta influence had pretty much become stale which was the reason as to why this film isn’t really as recognized as the other greats in the genre. And it’s a shame because Cherry Falls is a really great slasher film that takes a hilarious new spin on the familiar setup.

Though its concept may prove to be controversial in today’s times, with a little bit of tweaking, we might just see another creative slasher film released in this era. One that will rival Scream’s own sequel/reboot.

8. Day of the Dead (1985)

The third entry in Romero’s Dead franchise, follows a group of scientists and military personnel sheltering in an underground bunker in Florida, hiding from the undead horde.

Three of Romero’s classics had already received their own remakes, with the two, Night and Dawn being some of the best examples of a remake done right. Day of the Dead, however, seems to always stumble, whether it be its remakes or sequel, the film just never really got the retelling that it deserves.

Maybe with another shot, we might just get the definitive Day of the Dead experience. A reboot that would get what makes its predecessor such a great and thought-provoking film in the first place.

7. Final Destination (2000)

Alex Browning is among a group of high school students readying themselves for a trip to Europe. When he suddenly has a premonition their airplane will crash, he screams to warn the others but instead he is thrown off of the plane along with others, but the plane crashes after they get off. Weeks later one of the survivors mysteriously dies, and Alex realizes that things just got more complex.

Final Destination is one of the most clever and original horror films to ever come out in the 2000s, delivering us four excellent films (we don’t talk about the fourth entry) that make excellent use of mundane events to create fear.

The franchise’s final entry was back in 2011 and after that, we’ve just been dying to see more creative kills and visions. With a proper reboot, everything that made its original great could be taken and further pushed to the next level to give us an unforgettable film.

6. The Return of the Living Dead (1985)

When two bumbling employees at a medical supply warehouse accidentally release a deadly gas into the air, the vapors cause the dead to rise again as zombies.

The Return of Living Dead brought humor, intensity, and originality to the familiar zombie genre. As a result, we got one of the most iconic films about these undead. Despite having a strong first outing, however, the film was turned into a franchise, an undead one that is, one that seems to only get worse with each entry.

A modern reboot of the franchise would simply be perfect in today’s era. A film that would provide a much-needed refreshing take on the zombie sub-genre, as well as give us a likable cast of characters that you’ll grow to love.

5. Friday the 13th (1980)

A group of camp counselors trying to reopen a summer camp called Crystal Lake, which has a grim past, are stalked by a mysterious killer.

Bloody, sexy, and purely absurd are just some of the words to describe the Friday the 13th franchise. The franchise had taken numerous directions before, from being a murder mystery, going to L.A., to even exploring space, all with varying success.

Now is finally the time though to go back and explore the woods of Camp Crystal Lake. A film that would take the franchise back to basics, with Jason terrorizing camp counselors once more and no gimmick insights.

4. Jaws (1975)

When a killer shark unleashes chaos on a beach community off Cape Cod, it's up to a local sheriff, a marine biologist, and an old seafarer to hunt the beast down.

It’s been a long time since horror movies about wild animals have truly been able to provide genuine scares and thrills. One notable film of this caliber would be 1975’s Jaws, a film that made everyone back in its day, scared of water.

A modern reboot that aims to do this would be incredible as well, making us once again afraid of what lurks in a such safe place and once again providing fear to a real living creature, and not an imaginary one. We simply couldn’t wait for this to happen.

3. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

The movie follows Nancy Thompson who must uncover the dark truth concealed by her parents after she and her friends become targets of the spirit of a serial killer with a bladed glove in their dreams, in which if they die, it kills them in real life.

Remember the time when A Nightmare on Elm Street dominated not only the market but the horror genre as well? Giving us 9 outstanding horror films that explore horrific and visually mesmerizing nightmares and an iconic slasher in the shape of Freddy Krueger.

Unfortunately, the franchise seems to have died out, but maybe it doesn’t have to stay that way with a release of a reboot. A film that would take the same approach as 2018’s Halloween, ignoring the unnecessary sequels to create a new timeline with a grittier and more brutal iteration of the characters.

2. Alien (1979)

The crew of a commercial spacecraft encounter a deadly lifeform after investigating an unknown transmission. Now, they must try to survive the grip of this unknown creature who lurks on their ship.

Many horror films set in space have tried to recapture the magic that the Alien franchise has established, however, none has managed to ever come close to it, including the franchise’s later sequels. The first two films are an incredible trek to space, giving us both horror and action, combined with science fiction, to create an iconic film.

Considering how modern technology has come since the release of the first film, maybe with a proper reboot, we might just rediscover again the horror in space. A film that would take advantage of mesmerizing contemporary effects, along with erasing the films that had tarnished the otherwise strong name of the Alien franchise.

1. Psycho (1960)

Phoenix secretary, Marion Crane, embezzles $40,000 from her employer's client, goes on the run and checks into a remote motel run by a young man under the domination of his mother. Only to discover a dark secret deep within the confines of his home.

Psycho is one of the grandfathers of the slasher genre and helped establish many tropes that are still being used ‘til today. And its many sequels, while may not be as strong as its original, are still worth watching.

The franchise did receive a reboot of sorts before in the shape of Bates Motel, a psychological drama series, however, while incredible in its own right, it’s not really horror. Now is just the perfect time to release a reboot of the franchise, one that will scare and surprise the audiences as it did back in its release.

A gang of survivors decides to take up arms in order to fight the terrifying locust swarm. There was initially going to be a Gears of War game produced by Epic Games, the developers for Fortnite, titled Gears of War: Tactics but that game has been canceled.

The Kinect feature was added “just for the hell of it” as stated by the creator of the game, Xalavier Nelson Jr. There is also a $50 dollar reward for anyone who can finish the game using the Kinect feature alone, a reward that has yet to be claimed.

Since the release of the game in 2016, it has been praised for its engaging gameplay with added elements such as timed objectives to keep the player at an offensive, a concealment system, and procedurally generated maps which adds a new level of depth to the series.

Top 15 Movies Like The Thing (1982)

John Carpenter’s The Thing has stood the test of time as being a master class of paranoia, tension, and body horror that rivals any movie that has come forth or before its release back in 1982. Set in Antarctica where a shapeshifting parasitic alien wreaks havoc on an American research team, it creates an atmosphere of distrust and eeriness where even the viewer cannot trust if the character they’re watching is human or the eponymous “thing”. Since its release there have been numerous movies that are similar to what The Thing brings to the table and I am going to list them down for you. Whenever you feel like watching a human head open up vertically or you wanna see a good dose, or pints, of onscreen blood, then these are the top 15 movies similar to The Thing (1982).

15. Night of the Living Dead (1990)

The 1990 remake of the 1968 classic by the father of modern zombies, George A. Romero, is an updated and better looking retelling of the movie that started off zombies in popular culture. The story follows a band of survivors over a period of one night where they try to fend off an army of the living dead. The screenplay of the original was rewrote by George A. Romero himself for this movie with Tom Savini, known for Dawn of the Dead (1978) and From Dusk till Dawn, taking the helm.

The infection for the zombies in this movie started out from a space probe returning from the planet Venus where it contained an unknown kind of radiation that brought back the dead on Earth. Though I don't think that that's how radiation works in real life, in this movie, it does, and similarly with The Thing, an unknown force from outside the planet ravages a small band of survivors.

Although different from an alien terror, this movie mimics what The Thing brings by creating a feeling of distrust and conflict not just with the zombies but also with the characters trapped inside the farmhouse they picked as their stronghold. To make the zombies in this movie look realistic, the special effects team used real autopsy photos, forensic pathology textbooks, and Nazi death camp footage which is as morbid as it sounds.

14. Cloverfield (2008)

Lady Liberty has seen better days, let me tell you

Set in 2008 where a giant monster emerges and attacks New York City, a group of friends try to escape Manhattan before the monster destroys everything. Released back in 2008 and directed by J.J. Abrams, it is the first installment in the Cloverfield universe where it is followed by 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) and The Cloverfield Paradox (2018).

Similar to The Thing, an alien terror is the villain in the story with a difference. Clover, which is the name of the giant Godzilla sized monster in this movie, is the main antagonist where it’s seen destroying New York and fighting the military while constantly hounding the survivors.

It's filmed in a found footage style of cinematography similar to The Blair Witch Project. According to the lore connected to the franchise, Clover is only a baby in this movie but since it's already big enough to tear off the head of the Statue of Liberty and already 300 feet tall at its infancy, a full grown Clover monster is big enough to poke its head out of the clouds. If that ever happens in real life I don't think the military can do much about a mountain sized monster.

13. The Mist (2007)

The wildlife in Maine is crazy

The Mist revolves around a group of survivors trapped in a grocery store where a thick mist envelops their whole town with eldritch monsters hiding in wait. Released in 2007 with its premise based on Stephen King’s novella of the same name, it was directed by Frank Darabont, who produced the first season and the first half of season 2 of The Walking Dead.

The Mist offers up to horror hounds a healthy dose of lovecraftian monsters with religious fanaticism heavily emphasized throughout. From tentacled anomalies to spider monsters that lay their eggs inside human bodies, The Mist has no shortage of variety in terms of creatures and the terror that they bring.

Like The Thing it also follows a group of survivors isolated while monsters and otherworldly entities try to eat them. With an insane religious fanatic further worsening the fear of most people trapped in the store with religious mumbo jumbo. This tension divides the store between her “followers” and the actually not insane people. It creates a sense of distrust with who you can trust and can’t trust.

Greg Nicotero, who was in charge of the special effects in the movie, teamed up again with Frank Darabont to helm the first seasons of The Walking Dead with most of the cast of the film being main characters of the series. Fair warning though, this movie will crush your soul and you’ll see why when you reach the end

12. Predator (1987)

The Predator calls out its most dangerous prey yet, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Happening in the jungles of South America in 1987, Dutch, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, with his paramilitary team are tasked to save hostages in a hostile jungle while being hunted by a technologically advanced alien hellbent on killing every member of his team to make hunting trophies out of their dead bodies.

Directed by John McTiernan, it was released 5 years after The Thing where it explored another type of alien. Although both are stealthy, the Predator utilizes its brute strength and high tech weapons to pick-off its prey one-by-one not necessarily for survival but for glory.

The film is an action packed take on the extraterrestrial genre with high caliber rounds being fired, lots of gunsmoke, and shirtless guys screaming into the woods. Predator is widely regarded as a classic due to its great story, phenomenal creature design, and overall lore behind what the Predator is and why it does what it does.

The Predator was voiced by Peter Cullen, the same voice of Optimus Prime who is the leader of the Autobots in the Transformers franchise. Kinda strange to know that behind one of the most heroic sounding voices in pop culture is also behind the voice of a trophy hunting alien.

11. Alien (1979)

Just a huge nope moment in cinema. I mean look at that thing it looks disgusting

“In space, no one can hear you scream”. That's the tagline that launched a media franchise that resulted in one of the most culturally influential movies of all time, which was even preserved in the United States National Film Registry as being “culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant” Alien takes us on the commercial space tug called the Nostromo where its crew encounters a hostile and parasitic alien species.

Released 3 years before The Thing hit theaters, it was directed by Ridley Scott and follows similarly to what The Thing offered to viewers, an atmosphere of paranoia as the alien itself, also called a xenomorph, which was entirely black, could hide in the darkest corners of the ship without being seen.

Even a full 43 years after its theatrical release, it still holds up visually and still conjures up the same feelings of dread and terror viewers would of witnessed back then goes to show that Alien deserves the right to be called one of the most significant and important films of all time. Alien won the Academy award for Best Visual Effects after its release and even has multiple crossovers with the Predator franchise.

10. Annihilation (2018)

Me and the girls going on a camping trip while being higher than a kite

A meteor falls in a forest and eventually, over the course of 3 years, creates a closed ecosystem called “The Shimmer” where an alien presence mutates plants and animals. Directed by Alex Garland, it was a live action adaptation of Jeff VanderMeer’s novel of the same name. The story follows 5 women led by Lena, played by Natalia Portman, who venture into The Shimmer to learn more about the meteor that caused the creation of The Shimmer and the animals and plants that have changed because of its presence.

The story deviates from the body horror and suspense that The Thing brings to more on science fiction and psychological horror, but still brings about disturbing creatures that the group encounters which ranges from a giant albino alligator to a mutated bear. If you want to take a bit of a break from all the horror and suspense but still be satisfied in terms of the creatures with a different iteration of an alien then Annihilation is the movie to watch.

The initial cut of the movie was different from what the theatrical cut was because the producers deemed it to be “too intellectual” to be appealing to the general audience, because admittedly after watching this movie it is a bit of a mind-boggler with themes of depression and grief being sprinkled in this movie, but overall it still makes for a good watch.

9. Species (1995)

Natasha Henstridge plays Sil as the eponymous alien SPECIES in the movie. Get it? Cause it's titled SPECIES?

If a smoking hot alien woman would come up to you and tell you that she’d like to mate with you, would you do it? Now imagine that you don't fit her standards cause you're diabetic or have any kind of physical impairment that makes you not a suitable candidate, then you're dead with a punctured throat by way of sharp alien tongue. That’s Species in a nutshell. Events of the movie go into motion after the government receives a transmission from an alien race about an alien DNA and how to splice it with human DNA to create an alien-human hybrid. Which is as campy as it sounds but trust me it gets better.

After hundreds of different test subjects, the government creates a hybrid named Sil, played by Natasha Henstridge. Eventually Sil grows up super fast, maturing into a 12 year old in only 3 months and develops violent night terrors in her sleep. The government sees her as a threat because of this because apparently night terrors are a sign of evil rather than just normal night terrors so they eventually try and kill her, but of course she escapes. Further maturing into a grown woman in a short span of time. Her instincts take over and tries to mate with a healthy human male to further her species bloodline.

Although differing in tone and pacing from The Thing, it's similar in terms of the creature design and in the aliens capability to disguise itself and blend in with humans with only one goal, multiply and take over the world. Species was a box office success racking in $113 million dollars amidst a 35 million dollar budget. This success was brought upon with news of Natasha Henstridge’s nude scenes advertised by tabloids and magazines of the time before the film's release. That's the 90’s for you.

8. Leviathan (1989)

That does not look like taffy

Leviathan is what a movie would look like if The Thing and Alien had a baby. Set in an underwater geological facility, Beck (played by Peter Weller from Robocop), and his crew try to survive a mutating organism that kills anyone it comes across. Released back in 1989 and directed by George P. Cosmatos with creature designs coming from Stan Winston, the same visual effects artist for The Thing.

Leviathan is an underrated classic and a great alternative for The Thing fans. The body horror and transformations in this movie are top notch and easily comparable to The Thing with how visceral and gory it all looks with the tentacles, claws, and slime forming out of places where it should not grow.

You’ll be treated with scenes of bodies fusing together, still alive and conscious people being dragged around and absorbed by a lamprey looking monster while they plead for help. You will not be disappointed with the creature effects in this movie. Although the story lacks the kind of horror and tension that The Thing provides, the creatures and claustrophobic setting of the movie is more than enough to suffice and satisfy the fans.

Creature designs were conceived by Stan Winston and George P. Cosmatos after looking through a reference of marine life photos and medical reference books where they eventually came up with the idea of combining human and marine anatomy to create the mutating monster seen on film.

7. The Faculty (1998)

The most 90’s looking highschool kids you’ll ever see

A group of highschoolers in Ohio encounter an alien parasite that infects their whole school and the responsibility of saving their school, and possibly, the whole world depends on them and a homegrown drug that they have to snort to kill the aliens. Yup, that's the plot. The Faculty was released back in 1998 with Robert Rodriguez directing. Since its release, it has garnered a cult following and is considered as an underrated classic from the 90’s.

In comparison with The Thing, the group in this movie have to fight off an alien parasite that takes over human bodies, similar to The Thing, and basically leaves the infected human indestructible unless their bodies are dried out since the parasites need moisture to survive. It features an ensemble cast with Josh Hartnett (Pearl Harbor, 30 Days of Night), Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings), Robert Patrick (Terminator 2), and Famke Janssen (X-Men).

Similarities from The Thing stem from the alien parasite that takes over the whole school with sufficient body horror in this movie being given. There's a scene where a tentacled head crawls on the road while its headless body aimlessly looks for it to be reattached and Jon Stewart from the Tonight Show barfing alien larva to infect other people in the movie, so proper body horror and alien invasion tropes all around.

It evokes a similar atmosphere of distrust with the characters where they may not be sure if people they interact with are infected or not as there are no telling signs until they start vomiting alien larva. A certified underrated classic from Robert Rodriguez and a definite must watch for fans.

6. Life (2017)

“Don’t let go, Jack”

Life follows the exploits of a group of scientists aboard the International Space Station as they uncover the first signs of alien life on Mars. Upon discovery they soon find out that the alien life they discovered is more than just a single celled organism but a whole new and aggressive predator that hunts them down one by one.

Set entirely in space, the movie creates a sense of claustrophobia where none of the characters can escape since its setting is in a literal space station, and also brings forth an overall feeling of fear, a fear of the unknown and of the alien creature lurking in the space station. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Dr. David Jordan who acts as the main character of the movie where it's up to him and his team to try and destroy the alien before it kills all of them and stop it from having any chance of reaching Earth.

Drawing comparisons with The Thing, the characters have to contend with a creature that is not of this world and grows by the minute as it consumes and kills members of the space station. Creature design for Calvin in this movie is similar to what a squid would look like but more ferocious and alien like where it can transform its body at will to accommodate its survival in any type of environment, in this case in zero gravity where it glides through the hulls and hallways of the space station like it is swimming in water. Life was inspired by the original Alien movie and evidently so with its settings similar to that of the Nostromo and having to contend with, well, an alien.

5. Body Snatchers (1993)

Me after every minor inconvenience

The third film iteration of John Finney’s 1955 novel of the same name, Body Snatchers is an outstanding adaptation of the source material. The plot centers around a family in Alabama after discovering that the people working at a military base are replaced by aliens posing as perfect imitations of the people they copied after gestating in a plantlike pod while they sleep. The copies are indistinguishable physically except for a total lack of emotions from their speech or facial expressions.

Released in 1993 and directed by Abel Ferrera, it was received positively by critics and has become yet another underrated classic from the 90’s. The feelings of paranoia and distrust it evokes from the aliens disguising themselves as ordinary people is palpable as with my experience in watching this. Though from the outside looking in, it's easy to distinguish which one is an alien and which ones are not as the blank stares and monotone voices are a dead giveaway of an imposter.

It draws comparison to The Thing as it also brings in a sense of distrust among the characters and viewers especially during the first few scenes of the reveal of the invaders where the characters and viewer are left wondering which ones to avoid or trust. There has been another iteration of this movie released with The Invasion (2007) starring Nicole Kidman but in terms of horror and overall sense of dread, Body Snatchers is the more preferred watching for fans of The Thing that will leave you with a feeling of distrust long after the credits roll.

4. The Blob (1988)

Killer bubble gum from outer space

The Blob follows the exploits of Meg and Brian, which sounds like they came from Family Guy but no they did not, which are portrayed by Shawnee Smith and a young Kevin Dillon respectively, as they try to combat a hungry and destructive growing amoeba from outer space as it consumes and destroys everything in its path.

Released back in 1988 and directed by Chuck Russell, it received mixed reactions from critics upon its release but since then it has garnered a cult following up until today. The eponymous blob is a gelatinous mass that closely resembles bubble gum but make that bubble gum to be purely made of acid and able to grow exponentially depending on how much it consumes.

This movie pulls no punches in terms of the gore and brutally that it shows on screen. Literally no one is safe in this movie from main characters to children being dissolved completely. The body horror in this movie stems from the dissolved victims that the blob consumes shown on screen in gruesome detail with melted skin, grotesque half eaten bodies, and bodies being pulled in through sinks or door holes.

Similarities from The Thing can be attributed to the creatures themselves as the aliens from The Thing and The Blob are formless and able to shapeshift into any form that suits them. For The Thing it's organic beings while The Blob is just a gigantic mass of killer space taffy that grows and grows.. The Blob is a certified classic and will be thoroughly enjoyed by The Thing fans.

3. Superdeep (2020)

ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING but i think that's what we’re all here for, right?

Superdeep takes place in 1984 soviet russia in a secret underground research facility where reports of an unknown disease is spreading throughout the facility. They eventually find out that the disease is a mutating mold that transforms and changes humans into grotesque monsters and absorbs them into one hulking monstrosity.

Released in 2020 and directed by russian director Arseny Syuhin, it's based off of the very real Kola Superdeep Borehole whose main mission is to dig as close to the earth's crust, but thankfully there are no black molds being unearthed in that facility… or is there? The story follows a russian epidemiologist named Anna as she is called into the superdeep to help and figure out the spreading disease and stop it from ever reaching the surface. The creature behaves in a way as to what a mold or fungus would look like, crawling and consuming anything it touches.

Humans who have been infected develop growths on their skin that look like molds you'd see on 2 week old bread after which it spews spores into the air to infect more humans that come into contact within its area. It changes and contorts their bodies into an indiscernible monster of Thing-esque proportions. I mean just look at the photo for this entry, it's absolutely disgusting. Thing fans will not be disappointed with the utter body horror this Russian film brings to the screen with the monster designs guaranteed to gross out the hardiest of stomachs

2. The Fly (1986)

STOP STARING AT ME PLEASE

An absolute masterclass of a film that sets the standard for slow and stomach churning transformations in movies, David Cronenberg brings us his masterpiece with The Fly. Creature effects were made by Chris Walas who won the Academy Award for Best Makeup. The story follows Seth Brundle, an eccentric scientist who invents a teleportation pod that goes wrong when he accidentally mixes his DNA with a fly that flew into his teleportation pod during one of his trial runs.

Released back in 1986 to great fanfare from critics and audiences alike, the performance of Jeff Goldblum was widely praised with the creature effects and the absolutely disgusting and vile transformation of Goldblum’s character slowly turning into “Brundlefly”, the amalgamation between his DNA and a fly. It was a box office success earning a total of $60.6 million dollars against its $9 million dollar budget.

The Fly is an absolute must watch for Thing fans as the body horror in this movie harkens back to scenes of the Dog-Thing or the Palmer-Thing but make it so that the transformation doesn't happen in a violent explosion of blood and guts but a more painful and truly grotesque fate of slow transformation from one creature to another with falling hair, teeth, and skin peeling off strip by strip. Another masterclass in body horror filmmaking and a story that delves into the existential, Thing fans will not be disappointed in terms of creature effects and story that The Fly brings.

1. Harbinger Down (2015)

You can see why this is number 1

The most faithful adaptation to the original The Thing from 1982 (the 2011 prequel does not count, that movie just isn't worth it), Harbinger Down is the closest thing to a sequel that we will ever get. Funded by a kickstarter campaign back in 2013 and released in 2015. Harbinger Down follows the story of a group of college students on a crab trawler in the Bering sea to monitor the effects of global warming on a pod of beluga whales. During their research they stumble upon a soviet spacecraft encased in ice and upon thawing, let loose mutated tardigrades that attack and infect members of the Harbinger, which is the name of the ship they are in.

The movie was directed by Alec Gillis with creature effects by Tom Woodruff. Both of them are fans of The Thing and actually provide the animatronics and creature designs for the 2011 Thing prequel. Relying mostly on animatronics and practical effects for the monsters featured in the movie, it's a carefully crafted love letter to the creature effects of the 1982 original.

With transformations in the movie happening similarly to how it was in The Thing where tentacles sprout from the bodies of the infected or a pair of legs running down a corridor to catch its prey, Thing fans will not be disappointed by what Harbinger Down brings. Having a movie that was released as recently as 2015 and still being inspired by the terror and horror that what The Thing brought, it goes to show that the passion for movies that mirror what it brought to our screens is still alive and squirming inside the collective desire of fans of the genre and franchise.

15. Captain Marvel

That doesn't look like Brie Larson!

There are too many iterations of Captain Marvel to really give a good synopsis. Basically, he or she is an alien who protects Earth. All of the versions of Captain Marvel are far more interesting than the totally unlikeable, Brie Larson movie. That movie did far more damage to this book's image than the DC lawsuit.

14. The Eternals

They are so much more colorful in comic form.

A group of super old, super powered aliens were created by the Celestrials to protect the Earth from unwanted alien threats.The MCU movie had the opposite effect of the Captain Marvel movie. Even if it wasn’t a box office dynamo, it put the comics on my radar. Such an interesting blend of ancient aliens and superheroes.

13. Nice House on the Lake

Bathing in the blood of the apocalypse is the latest spa treatment.

An alien who lived on Earth for many years invites his favorite people to his lake house for the weekend. They don’t know that the world is ending in the rest of the world.This isn’t distinctly fun as it is a pleasure to read something so different. It might take a couple of read-throughs, but it is well worth it.

12. Howard the Duck

One giant waddle for duck-kind.

The cranky duck from outer space spends most of his time complaining about everything. It is a witty satire that never takes itself seriously. The story sounds ludicrous, but it is well loved if not overly well received. The terrible movie by George Lucas in the 80s destroyed the character. The resurgence is ongoing as Howard entered the MCU and received a new book in 2014.

11. Transformers

Toys make the best stories unless Michael Bay gets ahold of them.

Robots from the planet Cybertron have come to Earth looking for Energon cubes. Two factions are at war with each other, the Autobots and Decepticons. The battle between good and evil comes to Earth.The toys, shows, and comics dominated my elementary school days. It makes me a bit biased for nostalgic reasons. It is a really fun comic with amazing characters. If you’ve never seen the original movie, go check it out.

10. Lobo

Still looking for a single Czarnian to repopulate the race.

Lobo is the best bounty hunter in the galaxy. This puts him at odds with many of the heroes from Earth and many other planets. Lobo was the first villain that I thought was cooler than good guys. He was such a badass that he always stuck out in my mind. With his migration to more of an anti-hero, he solidified himself as one of my favorites.

9. Sinestro Corps

Yellow is the new Green.

Once the greatest of all the Green Lanterns, Sinestro found the power of Parallax and forged the yellow power rings. Now, he is assembling a team to destroy the organization he once championed. Another awesome villain who gets his own team to mold the galaxy to his own image. While the fear powered rings aren’t the strongest, they are fueled by a more primal emotion, making them a very dangerous group to tend with.

8. Aliens

You'd think they would get bored with constant violence.

I think we are all familiar with Aliens, but here is a quick rundown. Humans are spreading across space until they encounter a predatory super alien that destroys everything it encounters.Throughout all of the different titles, these books do a great job of expanding the movie universe. Some obviously fall flat; however, there is a ton to love about these stories.

7. Superman

No reason to fly towards the monster. I'm sure they will make a new power for that.

An alien from Krypton is shot to Earth as a baby to escape the dying planet. Our yellow sun gives him incredible powers to protect the world. I don’t like Superman and never have; however, it needs to be on this list. Superman is a classic whether I like him or not.

6. Venom

Yeah, he looks like a hero.

An alien symbiote attaches to another organism and gives them spider powers. Most notably, the Venom Symbiote linked to Eddie Brock to battle against Spiderman. Immense fan support pushed Venom to an anti-hero.. Everyone loves this guy. I like him because he hates Spiderman just like me.

5. Predator

Not even Arnold could chase these guys off the planet.

An alien race uses Earth as a hunting ground. They periodically stalk their prey on unsuspecting humans simply for the sport of it. Stories of humans fighting against the ultimate hunting machines against all odds areso much fun. The movies (except Predator 2, sorry Danny Glover) set up a great world. The comic books build it out to the highestlevels.

4. Guardians of the Galaxy

There's no chance of a disagreement with these guys.

Star Lord, a human/alien hybrid, was abducted by aliens as a young man and grew up traveling the stars. He assembles a ragtag group of heroes to help save the galaxy against the forces of evil.The movies are great, but the comics are even better. The characters were unlike anything I hadencountered in comics before. They were a breath of fresh air back then. Now, it isn’t quite the same for new readers, but they are a funny, diverse cast of misfits that bring joy to my heart.

3. Star Wars

Let's be honest, Luke never looked this cool.

Jedi vs. Sith. Empire vs. Rebels. We all know the stories as they are the closest thing to modern mythology that we have today. The new canon comics created great stories for our favorite characters. If you haven’t read the Darth Vader comic, what are you even doing with your life? Star Wars fans should read not only that one, but also everything from the new canon comics. The stories bring together the gaps in the movie timelines.

2. Green Lantern

How did the worst Green Lantern end up in the front of this picture?

The Green Lanterns defend the universe against the forces of evil. Each of the 3600 sectors now has two Lanterns who use their green power rings to fight evil.Hal Jordan is my favorite superhero of all time. The universe built by this comic is amazing. With all of the different power rings and their attached characteristics, you can lose yourself in the lore. If you have only seen the movie, forget it and read all of the associated books.

1. Dragon Ball

My son calls this the fart cloud.

Goku is sent to Earth as a baby to grow up and destroy the planet to make way for an invasion of his homeworld of Vegeta. Of course, he doesn’t know this and spends much of his time searching for the magical dragon balls and fighting against evil.The cultural impact of this comic and the ensuing TV show easily puts this at the top of the list. The comic itself starts off with the comic musings of a youth, but it grows with Goku as he ages (although he keeps a certain aloofness). It’s funny and action-packed with plenty of aliens.

Get ready for one of the most exhilarating horror films set in space, Pandorum. It’s got amazing gore and lots of action on screen to keep you entertained. It also has an amazing setting and atmosphere that will drown you in its world. If you love survival horror then Pandorum is definitely a film that you should watch.

15. Under the Skin (2014)

An alien entity inhabits the earthly form of a young woman who combs the roads and streets of Scotland in search of the human prey she came to plunder.

Under the Skin is an incredibly stylized film that will make you question what you are seeing thanks to its many surreal yet beautiful imageries. The film doesn’t follow your typical film about Aliens but rather it's a very experimental film which will easily keep you hooked.

It’s creepy, alluring, and one incredible film that’s deserving of your time.

14. The Blob (1988)

A deadly entity from space crashes near a small town and begins consuming everyone in its path. Panic ensues as shady government scientists try to contain the horrific creature.

The Blob turns the cheesy 50s horror classic into one of the most horrifying films you’ll ever watch. It’s an amazing remake that pushes the boundaries in the genre as it displays many horrific and creative kills in glorious practical effects, the movie even kills off its supposed protagonist and even children!

It also turned once was cheesy looking blob creature into something that’s actually made of nightmares. If you want a gory good time, then 1988’s The Blob is the one to watch.

13. It (2017)

In the summer of 1989, a group of bullied kids bands together to destroy a shape-shifting monster, which disguises itself as a clown and preys on the children of Derry, their small Maine town.

Stephen King’s shape-shifting creature story, It has been and always will be one of the most terrifying novels there is, but this movie adaptation further enhances the terror with creative scares and many memorable set pieces. It’s got an amazing cast of actors that will make you fall in love with them, and many of Pennywise’s scenes are nothing short of creepy.

The film also received a sequel which is just as equally good as this one so if you’re looking for a nostalgic film with tons of scares and likable characters to boot, well It might just be what you need to watch.

12. They Live (1988)

Nada, a down-on-his-luck construction worker, discovers a pair of special sunglasses. Wearing them, he can see the world as it really is: people being bombarded by media and government. Even scarier is that he can see that some usually normal-looking people are in fact ugly aliens in charge of the massive campaign to keep humans subdued.

They Live is a purely comical political satire that will keep you entertained throughout its whole duration. It’s a film full of tongue and cheek as well as some pretty likable cast of characters which makes it very easy to fall in love with it.

Although it may lack scares, it's still a fun film that you should definitely check out.

11. Alien 3 (1992)

Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) is the only survivor when she crashes lands on Fiorina 161, a bleak wasteland inhabited by former inmates of the planet's maximum-security prison. Once again, Ripley must face skepticism and the alien as it hunts down the prisoners and guards.

It may be a divisive entry to the amazing Alien franchise but this follow-up is undeniably one of the best that the sub-genre has to offer. The film is soaking in heavy atmosphere and tension, as it provides a dramatic closure to Ripley’s terror-filled adventure.

Although it may have a few controversial changes to the franchise and has a very outdated CGI, the film is nevertheless a spectacular entry that you should miss.

10. Signs (2002)

A widowed former reverend living with his children and brother on a Pennsylvania farm finds mysterious crop circles in their fields, which suggests something more frightening to come.

M. Night Shyamalan has produced many classics, and his 2002 film Signs is definitely one of those. It’s got so many creepy moments heightened by well put suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Add in the creativity of Shyamalan and you are guaranteed one engaging film will a shocking plot twist to boot.

9. A Quiet Place Part II (2021)

Set shortly after the events of the first film, the Abbot family must now face the terrors of the outside world as they continue their fight for survival in silence.

The first A Quiet Place film was an original and inventive film that created tension from start to finish, and this follow-up delivers the same thrill that you would expect and then some. While the first film only took place inside a small remote area, this sequel fleshed out many of the first film’s ideas to create a bombastic film that will make you hold your breath through its entire duration.

8. Annihilation (2018)

A biologist signs up for a dangerous, secret expedition into a mysterious zone where the laws of nature don't apply.

Prepare yourself for one of the most surreal horror films you’ll ever watch with Annihilation. It’s a film full of bizarre and beautiful imageries that will haunt and make you feel uncomfortable for weeks. It’s also got a pretty unique story making it such a refreshing watch when compared to the other films in the genre.

7. 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)

Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) is held in an underground bunker by a man who insists that a hostile event has left the surface of the Earth uninhabitable.

Nobody really expected this follow-up to the 2008 found footage horror film to be this great despite going almost in a completely different direction than its predecessor. Instead of focusing on a giant monster attacking the town, the film instead takes its time to build instead within its three characters inside a claustrophobic space, making for one of the most thrilling viewing experiences you’ll ever have.

But when the huge twist does come, the film somehow gets better as it shows you one of the most bombastic third acts ever. 10 Cloverfield Lane is easily a must-watch if you want a nonstop tension film.

6. A Quiet Place (2018)

Set in a post-apocalyptic world, a family is forced to live in silence while hiding from monsters with ultra-sensitive hearing.

A Quiet Place is a masterclass in tension, as it builds suspense from start to finish and never lets you go. It’s a film where every single noise, whether it may be quiet or loud feels shocking to hear as the inventively designed creatures may come running, making for one of the most heart-pounding movies you’ll ever experience.

The film also manages to make you care about its characters deeply, making the intense third act not only such a thrilling moment but also a somber one at that.

5. Predator (1987)

A team of commandos led by Major "Dutch" Schaefer (Arnold Schwarzenegger) on a mission in a Central American jungle finds themselves hunted by an extraterrestrial warrior.

The Predator franchise is one of the most iconic action films ever, and although the sequels may have completely dipped into action, let’s not forget that the first film is actually horror as well. It’s got testosterone-filled casts that you’ll love being hunted by a slasher-esque alien with an amazing design in the woods.

It’s full of bombastic action as well as some pretty tension-filled moments that will keep you on edge.

4. The Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

When strange seeds drift to earth from space, mysterious pods begin to grow and invade a small town, replicating the residents one body at a time.

If you want something bleak then The Invasion of the Body Snatchers might just be what you’re looking for. It’s a dark and serious film that’s almost gut-wrenching to watch as its group of characters gets hunted down by mysterious creatures that try to replace the human race. It’s a film filled with suspicion and dread which will put shivers down your spine.

It’s also got a haunting ending that will stay on you for days. Whether you’re watching this amazing remake from 1978 or the original 1956 film, you’re guaranteed a spectacular film that will keep you guessing from start to finish.

3. Aliens (1986)

Fifty-seven years after surviving an apocalyptic attack aboard her space vessel by merciless space creatures, Officer Ripley awakens from hyper-sleep and tries to warn anyone who will listen about the predators.

While the first Alien film may have taken the horror to space, this follow-up instead provides relentless action from start to finish. Instead of the one creepy xenomorph, the group of fairly likable characters is forced to face off hundreds of them, which leads to so many bombastic action set pieces.

It’s also a film that’s so influential and some even consider to be a superior sequel that is still referenced to this day and makes it very easy to see why it’s still one of the best Alien films you’ll ever watch.

2. The Thing (1982)

A remake of the 1951’s The Thing From Another World, follows a research team in Antarctica who is hunted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of its victims.

While it may not be as well-liked today as when it was released, The Thing has definitely proven itself to be an all-time classic. It’s got an isolated setting that will make you claustrophobic as well as suspicious thanks to the tension that the film provides as it makes you guess which ones the creature. The film also has many memorable moments that will stay with you for a long time.

It was difficult to decide which film would go to the top spot as many of these films are all amazing for different reasons, and while The Thing may not have reached number one, you can’t deny that it’s one of the best films of all time.

1. Alien (1979)

Set in a distant future, the crew of a commercial spacecraft encounters a deadly lifeform after investigating an unknown transmission.

The best film about Alien is none other than Ridley Scott’s Alien. It’s a gorgeous horror film with an amazing atmosphere and suspense that will keep you on your toes. This film provided us with so many memorable moments like the chest-burster scene and the shocking revelation of one of the crew members.

About Outer Wilds

I have put in over 20 hours in Outer Wilds, explored all of its planets thoroughly, and gotten the “True Ending” while filling out the ship log. I have also completed its DLC “Echoes of the Eye'' fully. I will be reviewing the game fairly and taking into account its price point, what it succeeds at, and where it falls short.

Outer Wilds is a first-person, space adventure puzzle game that takes the players around a vast solar system. The game focuses heavily on letting the player figure out its many secrets and mysteries by themselves, all while being stuck in a never-ending time loop. The player will explore various planets and uncover the secrets left behind by an ancient civilization known as the "Nomai". Outer Wilds is completely combat-free and does not have conventional progression systems. Instead, the game is purely knowledge-based. The more you explore and discover, the more information you get in order to access other areas and planets.

Outer Wilds was released on May 28th, 2019, on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch for $24.99. It originally started as a Master’s Thesis by Alex Beachum that eventually became a commercial release. The game was developed by Mobius Digital and published by Annapurna Interactive.

When the crowdfunding platform ‘Fig’ launched in 2015, Outer Wilds was the first title that it promoted. The team of nine raised up to $126,000, which gave them enough to work on the game for around nine months. The game was released to critical acclaim, though it did not start to gain popularity until later, through word of mouth.

The player steps into the shoes of an alien astronaut, who is just about to go on his first solo mission to outer space. In the beginning, you are given a ‘signal scope to help you identify important places, and you make a quick visit to the observatory. You are suddenly ‘paired’ with a ‘Nomai’ statue that will place you in a 22-minute time loop.

From here on, you are free to explore the different planets and uncover the mysteries of the ancient civilization known as the ‘Nomai’. And hopefully, figure out why the sun keeps exploding, why you are stuck in a time loop, what's up with these planets, and exactly what the Nomai found that is so important.

Outer Wilds excels in its unique way of telling a fascinating story. The game sets up an interesting mystery from the get-go and leaves the rest to the player to discover its many pieces one by one until it all comes together in the end. The great thing about this game’s narrative is how non-linear it is. Since the player is free to traverse any planet in whatever order they wish, each player will discover the different plot points in a different order. It’s remarkable how this game manages to tell a cohesive, interesting story, while also spreading its pieces out. The biggest takeaway from the way it tells its story is how much it respects the players without holding their hand.

To keep the player from getting too lost, you are able to view a ‘diary’ on your ship that gives each new discovery a slight context and hints at how it connects to the overall plot. This is a stroke of genius from the game, as this allows the player to truly step into the character’s shoes. You are excited to find new information as the player, as well as the character.

You will come across some friendly faces on your journey. Sit down, roast a marshmallow and listen to their tunes.

Of course, in order for the story to truly work, the actual ‘meat’ of it has to be interesting. Thankfully, Outer Wilds excels in this department as well. Even though you don’t meet many NPCs on your journey, you are able to translate old Nomai scriptures (which works as a sort of ‘audio logs’).

The writing of these ancient characters is excellent, and you really feel a connection with a lot of them even though you never meet them in person. The fact that so much of the story is told through writing and it never gets boring or tedious, speaks volumes about its quality. You are excited about every new piece of the puzzle you find, and I’m sure every player will test their imagination with various theories on where the story is headed.

Stories that are reliant on mystery often fall short of delivering a satisfying conclusion. Outer Wilds doesn’t fall into this trap. Once you wrap this game’s narrative, it will leave you in awe of its beauty, revelations.

Outer Wilds Gameplay

Mechanically speaking, Outer Wilds’ gameplay is pretty basic. You have access to every ‘ability from the start. Flying the spaceship takes some getting used to, and you will definitely crash into planets on your first couple of tries, but that’s part of the learning curve. Aside from crashing your spaceship, you will spend the majority of the gameplay walking around and using your translator, signalscope, and scout launcher to interact with different areas of the game. All of these work perfectly and help to enhance your engagement in the story.

Each planet offers a new mechanic/gimmick that is unique to that planet. For example, on the planet Giants Deep, there are many cyclones that move around the map, causing different areas to flood or get taken out completely. As the player, you have to time which areas you visit first before they become inaccessible, and perhaps use the cyclones to reach new areas.

This sort of creative variety is true for all planets. This keeps the game from becoming repetitive, despite its simple and limited mechanics. If you find yourself stuck on one planet, you can always travel to another one and face new types of puzzles and challenges there. The puzzles mostly involve translating certain text, moving objects around, shining your light on something or platforming. The game also introduces some very interesting puzzles later on in the game that we won’t spoil here.

One aspect that I feel can be improved is its ‘survival’ mechanics. The game sets itself up almost as if you’re going to need to be very careful with your oxygen tank and fuel levels. However, these never become a big part of the game, mostly because the time loops are so short. This leaves some aspects feeling underdeveloped, but overall I am glad they didn’t get in the way of exploring. As I said, the spaceship controls can take some time to get used to and may feel tedious at first. However, after a few loops, it becomes second nature and you’ll be landing on planets within the first couple of minutes of each loop.

Outer Wilds Combat

Outer Wilds shows that a game doesn’t need a combat system in order to keep the player engaged.There is pretty much zero combat, but there are sections where, let’s say, you face an opposing foe. I won’t go into too much detail as discovering moments like this by yourself is what makes the game special (be wary of Dark Bramble).

What’s interesting is that early versions of this game showed a combat system. It seemed like it was planned to be a big part of the game as well. Overall, I feel this game is better for the lack of combat, as it wouldn’t have fit in with its light-hearted atmosphere.

Outer Wilds Quest/Mission System

As I pointed out before, the game has no ‘quests.’. You are given one task in the beginning: ‘Go out to space and explore to your heart's content’. The way Outer Wilds helps to direct its players is through its ship log. Think of this as, like a storyboard, that updates as you explore. They are vague enough to not ruin the experience but also hints at the player on where they may need to explore a little more. If you feel lost, go to your ship log, see where there is a ‘question mark’ and you can mark it on your map.

This system really gives you that ‘adventure’ feeling, like you are always on the verge of a huge revelation. What’s great is that you and the main character have the exact same knowledge, and you can decide which part of the story to pursue based on your interest and the information. In other words, you set your goals and try your best to pursue them. In this game, if there’s a will, there’s away.

Using your signalscope, you can find explorers like yourself chilling by campfires on each planet, playing their unique musical instruments. It’s always recommended to find them the first thing when you go to a new planet, as you can speak to them and they will give you some hints that can be useful. You can also roast marshmallows by the campfire and listen to them play. Good vibes.

The non-linear design of Outer Wilds really lands itself as one of a kind, and some people may find it disorientating. However, those willing to commit will find an adventure like no other. Feeling lost is a big part of the game, and it only makes the discoveries more gratifying.

Staying true to its nature, Outer Wilds finds beauty in its simplicity when it comes to the graphics. Visually, it is not up there with some of the biggest showcases gaming has to offer. Instead, it relies on cute, cartoon-like characters, with an emphasis on variety in its environments. It’s got a likable aesthetic with some really smart art direction, that ties in directly with its gameplay and puzzles.

One thing that can get annoying is the depth of field, especially out in space. Sometimes, it can be hard to tell how far/close certain objects are, which will cause some rage moments. This annoyance is amplified by the fact that the physics works in a way where you will need some time to re-adjust your ship to give it the right direction and speed. Aside from that, the game does drop frames every now and again, especially on Giants Deep, where there is a lot going on visually, but nothing to ruin the experience. For an indie game, I think the graphics do its job in pulling you into its world and setting the atmosphere.

Outer Wilds Developer

Outer Wilds was developed by Mobius Digital, and it was their first commercial game. It is a small team with passionate developers. They love interacting with their community and release patches consistently. They even released one patch that added a fun little variation to one of the endings.

They recently released the full DLC “Echoes of the Eye” for $14.99. If you loved the base game, you will love this DLC as well. It adds a completely new mystery to uncover, utilising its mechanics while adding new ones. The DLC is long and large enough to justify its price point, and I can see some people enjoying this more so than the base game.

Outer Wilds Price

Outer Wilds is currently $12.49 on Steam, and $24.99 on consoles (PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch). You can find the game at discount on various sales often, and considering its price point, I definitely recommend giving it a try. The game does not include any in-game purchases at all, and once you pay the full price, you get everything in it. The game doesn’t offer any online functions, and there isn’t much replayability. So if you’re looking for a unique, exploration-based single-player game, it’s definitely worth it.

Pros:

A mystery-driven story that will keep you guessing and immersed the whole way through.
A unique exploration system that is purely knowledge-based
Each planet feels completely different from the last
An exhilarating soundtrack that compliments that game super well
Feels extremely satisfying to discover secrets
Great art direction that sets the tone
All aspects (gameplay, visuals, sound, story) all compliment each other super well

Cons:

Some planets can cause the game to dip in performance based on what’s happening on the screen
The spaceship controls can feel wonky at first
The game can get a bit too obscure in some parts, and may force you to look up some hints online
Some annoying platform sections that may force you to replay the loop entirely

If you’re looking for an adventure to the great unknown, or maybe just up for fighting some monsters not from this planet, then you can’t go wrong with Alien themed board games. These board games go above and beyond what the theme has to offer. Get ready for an adventure beyond the earth’s surface and capabilities.

When it comes to alien themed board games there’s a vast array of titles that we can throw in here (as vast as the space maybe?). Here’s a list of 10 alien themed board games that we got to enjoy over the years that you might be interested in trying out yourself. (Star Wars is a given but we didn’t include it here to give other board games with aliens a chance.)

10. Desolate

You are on a rescue mission to investigate Station 4 on the moon due to unusual silence from the members in that station. Your ship suddenly loses control once you are near the station. With almost no way to reach home you decide to venture inside Station 4. You find out that aliens have overrun the station and there is no sign of your comrades. With your ship destroyed your only hope to go home is through the escape pods found deep within the station. You must find enough powercells in order to power the escape hatch and get out of there.

What’s fun about Desolate:

A solo game, well you can add players if you buy the booster and expansion, but the game is great solo.
Quickplay, Easy and fast to play, if you’re waiting for something with 15-30 mins to spare this game would be great to pull out.
Art, sure it’s only in grayscale but you get this retro horror vibe from it.

You are a group of stranded planetary researchers just trying to survive and get out of hostilities. One of your members has been infected by an alien and will now sabotage and infect all the other researchers. You have to contact mission control before this infection gets out of control. All of the players are passed cards which will determine your role in the ship (as a human or alien). The humans win if the satellite array is built before the alien manages to infect all the other members of your ship.

What’s fun about Alien Entity:

Mafia Game, seems to be all the rage now so Alien Entity kind of fits, only with an alien theme and the ability for players to come over to your side…. Well, you don’t get to expose the alien though.
Party Game, Easy game that you can bring to a get-together. I also count it as an ice-breaker game.
Played with as many rounds as you want, Quick game to be played in multiple rounds… you can keep playing till you get bored.

8. Cosmic Encounter

Okay, instead of fighting off aliens as humans, why not be the aliens instead? Welcome to the Cosmic Age, the alien species is growing rapidly and it is now a race to colonize more planets to dominate the galaxy. There are so many species of aliens and you get to choose 1 of these races to play as. Each race has their own unique sets of abilities that will help you achieve your goal however you see fit to dominate the universe.

What’s fun about Cosmic Encounter:

Simple enough, it’s a war game but a tone easier, the basics are simple enough to get.
Replayability, there are so many species and abilities to choose from, while the game is simple to learn it takes a while to master due to all the options you have as the aliens.
Difficulty rating, the aliens come in colors! The colors show how easy or hard it is to use a certain character. So, if you’re new, use the green aliens till you get the hang of the game.

7. Thanos Rising: Avengers Infinity War

Given that there are alien members in the popular movie franchise, we decided to put this in the list as well. In this game your goal is to ultimately put a stop to Thanos who is on a quest to collect six infinity stones to power his Infinity Gauntlet. The game is a dice and card game where all of you control a team of heroes with the common goal of beating Thanos. You’ll lose if 10+ heroes are defeated or if one team is completely depleted by the end of the turn. Another lose condition is if Thanos manages to gather all six Infinity Stones.

What’s fun about Thanos Rising: Avengers Infinity War:

Team of heroes, you can make your dream team of heroes, well at least the ones available in the game.
Critical thinking, from building your team, choosing a sector and fighting other villains.
Easy to learn, something you can bring over to game night and get to playing right away.

6. Galaxy Trucker

Let’s have something less serious and family friendly in this list. Just like earth, the galaxy also needs a sewer system. Corporation Incorporated is in charge of building and maintaining these sewer systems and now you—yes! You! get to join their ranks. You are now a Galaxy Trucker. Your job is to build a strong enough ship that can withstand the harshness of space and deliver valuable cargo across the galaxy all in record time. While the task sounds easy enough, there are Space pirates, stray meteors and other hazards you need to deal with along the way. Let’s not forget that other Galaxy Truckers tend to be competitive.

What’s fun about Galaxy Trucker:

Build the ship, all players go through a common warehouse where they look for parts of their would-be ship. You end up with different ships every game.
Competitive, for some reason the game forces everyone to be really invested with everyone’s actions and their own.
Watching your ship chip off, you will not get out of this game unscratched.

5. Space Alert

Let’s face it, in reality, time isn’t something we have a lot of during a crisis and usually in board games, time is slower—sometimes all players take a long time making their move while in-game time-- only a minute or so has passed. Well, you don’t get the luxury of time in Space Alert. The game is a co-op team survival game where you have to keep your ship safe for ten minutes. During play, a central computer (app) will announce the presence of threats and will play a 10-minute soundtrack (this acts as your timer). You (and your crewmates if you play with other people) will have to decide how to act to fend off threats (aliens being one of those threats).

What’s fun about Space Alert:

Quick Game, you have ten minutes.
Stress/ Pressure, It forces you to think of quick and decisive moves to solve the upcoming threats, I think board games that allow their players to think more are great.
Chaotic, it’s part of the fun, especially if all of you are active team players but with varying opinions on what to do.

4. Escape from the Aliens in Outer Space (Ultimate Edition)

Things seem to look dim as the research ship you are on-board on is dealing with system failures. The malfunctioning of the ship seems to be the least of your worries as an unknown lifeform has entered and is picking your companions off one by one and turning them into horrendous monsters. Will you and your remaining crew members be able to survive? The game is a card game where the players are either human or aliens. Players need to cleverly bluff their way to victory by revealing bits and pieces about their location. As a human you win the game if you manage to reach the Escape Hatch, meanwhile the Aliens win if they manage to hunt all the humans down.

What’s fun about Escape from the Aliens in Outer Space:

Engaging, you don’t know your enemies and allies, it’s dark, every sound and clue is important.
Ultimate Edition, everything from the base game to the other editions is already included.
Aliens can be their own enemies, you know how mafia games go where the bad guys know their fellow bad guys? Over here the aliens could eat their own.

3. Clank in Space

Instead of finding yourself up against a dragon like the previous game of Clank!, we are now cautiously making our way through a giant spaceship filled with loot owned by the evil Lord Eradikus. Your goal is to take the loot and escape through the emergency escape pods in the ship. To do that you need to have access to the ship’s command module. Build your deck to help you go through the ship without making a – Clank!

What’s fun about Clank! In Space:

Stand alone, no need to play the previous game, if you prefer the whole alien space theme more than fantasy themed game but with a deck building mechanic, then this is the game.

While military might is one way to show superiority, other components such as political maneuvering and economic bargaining must be looked at in order for you to strengthen your forces. Which faction will be the strongest in the galaxy? There can only be one. The game allows 3-6 players to take command of one of seventeen available factions, each faction has their own strengths that you can use to get the upper hand in this intergalactic battle. Keep note of your objectives, and make sure you work towards them instead of focusing on military prowess (unless winning via might is one of the objectives).

Stand alone, it’s fine if you missed the first game, you don’t need any previous knowledge from the core game since this is an entirely new setting.
Objective to turn on the other, not all the humans are allies, all of you have different objectives and some of you might get in the way of your own goals.
Area fun, You can use the labs features to your advantage and to travel to other parts of the map.
