All 3 Alien: Covenant Trailers You Need to Watch

While we anticipate the release of Alien: Covenant in May 2017, here are the trailers for us to watch and enjoy.

1. The Official Trailer

Released on February 28, 2017, the official trailer gives a clear picture of what is going on in the film, and an explanation of the Covenant expedition, as well as a quick overview of the characters before the usual action shots accompanied by heart-pounding music.

The trailer is well put-together; I really loved the shot where the beam of the flashlight just barely passes over the egg, revealing the shape. It sent a chill up my spine. I also liked the lightness and hope depicted in the first minute or so of the trailer; the shift when they land is incredible. The trailer really got me excited for the actual movie.

2. The Teaser Trailer

Released on December 24, 2016, the teaser trailer differs greatly from the official trailer, which was released two months later. For one, it includes a very different – and much creepier, in my opinion – type of music, a la The Hunger Games.

This one also focuses a little bit less on the xenomorph and a little bit more on the characters and the relationships between them; we get a clearer shot of what seems to be our main female character, and the characters speak quite a bit more.

It also reveals a sexy shower scene, which seemed a little bit out of place, but, I suppose that teaser trailers are often disjointed and don’t reveal everything – that is the function of a teaser.

3. Prologue: The Last Supper

This is a little film short released on February 24, 2017. It acts as both a ‘prologue’ to Alien: Covenant and a trailer. It introduces us to the crew of the Covenant and their relationships as they celebrate before going into cryo-sleep, presumably for their journey to the planet where the rest of the film takes place.

I was immediately endeared to this cast of characters; they seemed so normal, and so ready to begin a new life abroad in the universe. And did I see a gay couple? I love that representation, even though it might be strange for that couple to be on a colonization mission.

All in all, a nice little bit of lightness and humor to prelude what we all know is going to happen later; I’m looking forward to getting to know these characters, before they’re torn to shreds by extraterrestrial monsters.

The marketing for this film has been so slick and gorgeous; it makes me excited for the actual film. The cinematography and musical selections give me chills. You can follow the development of the film on the official Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter accounts.

Will Alien: Covenant Be Scarier Than Its Predecessors?

The new Alien movie has promised to bring the franchise back to its former glory. But will the film be scarier than the ones that came before it?

As we anticipate the release of the latest installment in the iconic ‘Alien’ franchise, questions have inevitably arisen about the film’s capacity to equal, or perhaps even surpass, the terror factor of the other films.

Though much of the plot of the film remains a mystery, many believe that director Ridley Scott desires a return to the original style of the Alien franchise; whether this will make the film more frightening than some of its predecessors remains to be seen. While some have faith that the franchise will maintain its track record of being some of the scariest sci-fi movies ever made, some worry that the Alien formula will no longer be enough to scare new generations of fans.

A new generation of horror movie fans expect much more of the franchise

The Alien movies have long been a front-runner in sci-fi horror, and for good reason. The previous movies have depicted humans as essentially helpless; once the xenomorphs are unleashed, its near impossible to escape them; remember, the expectations for survival in each film are pretty grim.

However, some believe that this long-standing feature of the franchise may no longer be enough to thoroughly terrify audiences. After decades of Face-Huggers leaping at the camera and the ominous chatter of teeth from the shadows, viewers have become desensitized to the brand of fear that Alien is famous for.

The answer to this issue is, of course, to ‘up the anti’ in terms of the terror factor, which may mean bigger, more specialized xenomorphs putting humans in even more terrifying, inescapable situations.

Does new technology give 'Alien: Covenant' an edge?

Some believe that the birth of new CGI and filming techniques since the release of previous films will give ‘Alien: Covenant’ an edge when it comes to the fear factor.

The ability to make more realistic creatures that appear on screen for more time would appear to be an advantage when making a movie such as this, but many purists believe that excessive use of new technology may make it less attractive to the franchise’s older viewers, with the possibility of losing their loyalty completely. However, newer viewers of the franchise seem to be excited about the prospects of new filming technologies for the franchise, hoping for a more present antagonist in the xenomorphs.

With a projected budget of $150 million, there is no telling what Ridley Scott will attempt in his latest installment.

All in all, the results of this debate remain to be seen. With big shoes to fill and a certain responsibility to the franchise, ‘Alien: Covenant’ is likely to run a course similar to its predecessors. The challenge, however, is to make new generations of movie goers afraid of the xenomorph once again. A new day dawns on sci-fi's most iconic franchise

Another installment in the cult-classic Alien series is bound for theaters. On May 19, 2017, Alien: Covenant will be released in North America. Directed by Ridley Scott and starring such big names as Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, and James Franco, the new movie promises to be as heart-poundingly terrifying as its infamous predecessors.

According to plotlines released by Twentieth Century Fox, the film follows the crew of the colony ship Covenant, which consists entirely of couples hoping to start a new life on a distant planet. The crew stumbles upon a lush planet that appears to be a lost paradise. However, upon further exploration, they discover that this beautiful planet is actually a dangerous world inhabited by David, the lone survivor of the expedition depicted in the 2012 film Prometheus. Trapped on the hostile surface, the crew must mount a daring escape… or perish.

Ridley Scott welcomes 'Prometheus' back into the Alien universe

In a bold move, director Ridley Scott announced in November 2015 that Alien: Covenant is meant to be the second in a new Alien trilogy that acts as a prequel to the first film. Despite the 2012 film’s substandard performance and disassociation from the franchise, Scott seems to have allowed Prometheus to reclaim its seat in the Alien universe as the first installment of this new trilogy.

Concerns continue to mount that Covenant will be a repeat of Prometheus, and some fans have sworn off the film altogether for fear of another disappointment. However, long-time fans of the franchise are willing to give Scott, and Alien, another chance.

A return to legendary status?

Many fans hope that the new sequel will help mend some of the hard times that have befallen the franchise in recent years and return the films to their rightful place as compulsive viewing in the sci-fi genre. However, many critics are skeptical of the film’s potential success, considering its closeness to what may be considered a major flop.

Some rumors suggest that the film embodies features from the 1979 film, and that the original xenomorph will be glimpsed on-screen for the first time since Alien: Resurrection (1997). Other rumors suggest that Alien: Covenant will feature a whole new type of xenomorph, and may attempt to differentiate itself from the other films in style and plotline.

However, none of these claims have been substantiated by 20th Century Fox or any of the other companies involved in the film’s production, so it seems that we’ll have to wait until May for the real answers.

All in all, no one is really sure what this new movie will bring to the franchise. Whether it will be a new jewel in the Alien crown or another dent in the franchise’s image remains to be seen.
