SCORN: The Gross and Fascinating Art Style Behind the Game

10. General game analysis

Scorn is a horror game that combines concepts only seen in Sci-Fi or fictional movies. Visceral, bizarre, weird, psychedelic; these are the words that pop up first while playing this game. Serbian developer Ebb Software did a magnificent job interpreting horror in Scorn. Such interpretation comes from the idea of living in a humanly decaying world filled with technology as a form of evolution but it's actually what is making humankind go to waste. Scorn designs mixes the unknown with the familiar, this is why we get to see a gothic biomechanical world. The concept artist Filip Acovic wanted to confuse the player with a game that cannot be clearly explained. Designs that are odd but somehow similar to our world. . There is no story behind Scorn, no dialogues, and no explanation of what is going on. In words of Acovic, "it's not just the player who is going to experience this; it's us also, and we made it. That's particularly hard for some people to accept. They tend to require some explanation: How was this done, who did it, and for what purpose?". Any interpretation that you get will be correct as this game is a piece of art and should be treated as such.

These are the ones mentioned in the Scorn artbook. Some creatures appear in the game but are unique like the parasite or the protagonist.

9. Scorn as an experience

Scorn is an extrapolation of our world. Some concepts widely seen in the scenarios of the game are those of conception, birth, evolution, technology, sexuality, decay, and empathy. All these things are part of our ordinary days. The game transforms them into biomechanical environments and creatures that are gross but fascinating. While playing you're reborn into a violent world that you don't understand. You come across scenarios that are dangerous and seem strange to the protagonists and to some creatures. As a player, you'll experience the awkward feeling of putting your limbs in weird spots in order to activate mechanisms. It can be uncomfortable and seems painful to the protagonist. The ugliest feeling I got was born out of empathy, you see these vulnerable creatures suffering for your own benefit. Any moral choice you could make will not change a thing so you have to go through it anyways. The designers wanted to cause this emotion because they gave them an innocent look. They're called the "Moldmen", they're literally newborns whose mission is to be of use to the player and nothing else. With a little empathy, you'll feel guilty and even sad for making them go through so much pain only to open a door. This is what Scorn is about, experiencing emotions and deep thought on how this world functions in comparison to our own. To put it in simple words, Scorn is an experience of existence itself. There is no story and no purpose at all. The mechanics are very simple which is funny because the design of everything in the game is extremely detailed.

8. The influences of Zdzislaw Beksinski

In the words of Filip Acovic; "the key visual representation of decay in Scorn is informed by Beksinski". He was a Polish painter and sculptor who represented a dystopic surrealistic world in his work. The atmospheres, colors, and organic humanoid shapes as well as some of the buildings in the game are close to Beksinski's paintings. His whole universe was an inspiration for the game's art design. What's cool about it is that you don't get to notice this in an obvious way. The similarities are subtle and this was purposely done since the artist intended to differentiate the game's art as a combination of influences and his own imagination. The result was a unique universe that cannot be confused with any other. In "The Field" is where you get a more Beksinski feeling because of the colors used and the lifeless atmosphere. The Field seems like a desert cemetery, just like in some Beksinski paintings.

7. The biomechanical construct

Every design in the game is made of organic matter; the walls, interfaces, guns, etc. Everything is made of recycled matter, explaining why there are dead bodies here and there. In Scorn, death is not faced as in our world. The decay process of the bodies is not like ours. Inside Scorn everything is useful after dying because "decay" is actually a transformation of matter. The most explicit example is found in The Blasted Labyrinth where the Homunculi's bodies reside. It doesn't even look as if it was a Homunculi but that is how the process of body decay works in Scorn. They became part of the landscape looking as if their bodies were a building instead of dead Homunculi.

6. The strangely beautiful design of each scenario

One of the most important characteristics of organic fusion with technology is the difficulty of separating them both. You never really know where organic matter ends and where the machinery begins. It's interesting because there are no explicit allusions to specific organs. You do get a hint of what could it be. You get to see visceral scenarios everywhere, anatomy is very noticeable as a source of inspiration but is not obvious. This is why it looks like an alien world but is actually not.

5. Other influences

Most people will only believe that the game is influenced by H.R. Giger but there are actually many other artists, authors, film directors, writers, and philosophers that played a role in Scorn's ideas. Among them are: David Cronenberg, Dario Argento, Franz Kafka, Jorge Luis Borges, J.G. Ballard Thomas Ligotti, Albert Camus, Martin Heidegger, Ernest Becker, and Sigmund Freud. These influences explain some of what's hiding in Scorn's universe and why it feels more like a philosophical journey than like the usual horror game where you get jump scares and gore as the main focus.

4. The influence of H.P. Lovecraft

Filip Acovic also took some Lovecraftian concepts on the unknown and indescribable. The Shells were taken from the idea of transferring from a physical body to these entities called shells. He says: “I experimented with radically different forms, thinking about all the strange and interesting ways I can alter the way the player moves and experiences the world using a new body, which doesn’t even have to be humanoid at all.” The Shells ended up being creatures that grow wings and tentacles. They used the idea of the origins of the Lovecraft creatures, primordial, formless entities. Something that cannot be described and doesn't have a shape that our brains can decipher as something in our world.

3. Guns and interfaces

Guns are made as a phallic design activated only through the parasite. The parasite possesses the mechanism to activate the weapons in the game, without it the protagonist would be defenseless and vulnerable to all dangers he encounters. The concept of organic weapons has already been implemented in games like Half-Life or Prey. But in Scorn, the biggest inspiration was taken from the Sci-Fi film "eXistenZ" by David Cronenberg.

Interfaces like switches, buttons, controllers, door locking mechanisms, health, and ammunition replenishment systems are mostly operated with the insertion of the player's extremities, notice how the idea of penetration is present in these mechanisms. The purpose of this was to make the player feel vulnerable and give a feeling of uncertainty. The player will wonder "is this thing going to hurt me? should I do this?", none of these mechanisms look safe at all. They're all made of organs; pulmonary systems as fuse bioxes, door locks as hearts, and power buttons as sphincters.

2. The Creatures

Inside Scorns' universe, there are different creatures among the civilization. As you move forward in the game you understand that this world's civilization had some fascination over things like conception, sexuality, and evolution. Some of these creatures are a representation of them.

Some creatures have a humanoid shape like the Moldmen, while others are far away from it and look like an animal mutation like the Crater Creatures. Then there's the Cyborgs, these things caught my attention immediately. They're unique looking, all cyborgs have a different and unique design. Very different from the usual concept of what a cyborgs look like. The concept artist wanted to adapt the Cyborgs to the organic shape of Scorn and not make them out of metallic material. The cyborgs are made out of recycled cadavers by the Homunculi. Recycling is also an important matter inside Scorn. This is why you get to see many corpses around. They aren’t buried, they are used to build or create stuff.

The creatures are mostly inspired by H.R. Giger, Bekzinzki, and Lovecraft. But displayed in a unique, combined way.

1. A tribute to H.R. Giger

Now everything I've mentioned so far isn't as strong as the influence that H.R. Giger had. It's the first thing that comes to the player's mind if they saw anything related to Giger's artwork. The most obvious influence perhaps. The team studied Giger's work under the question "are we being overwhelmed by technology and losing ourselves and our own essence?"

The whole art design, the idea of mixing technology with organic matter, the sexuality, phallic references, the alien-like world, most of that comes from the film "Space Jockey", which explains why you can't really tell what is going on while you're playing.

The coloring of the buildings and how they're shaped is clearly a visual taken from Giger's art. The mirroring effect is also widely seen in Giger's work. Some aesthetics in the game make you feel like you're inside one of his paintings. I loved that strange feeling of not really understanding but being delighted with the experience.

In the end, that's what the game is about.

As humans, we have always been fascinated with what lies beyond our planet. It has led us to the exploration of space and has given us leaps in mankind's progression as a species like the moon landing and the journey of Voyager 1 which has gone beyond our solar system.

As we look up at the night sky, sometimes we wonder if there's someone looking back. Since time immemorial there have been reports of “wheels” in the sky or “dancing fireballs” that have mystified and terrified people who have witnessed them. The following entries in this list are the most notorious ones. These are the top 15 UFO sightings of all time.

15. Japan Airlines Cargo Flight 1628 Incident

On the night of November 17, 1986, Captain Kenju Terauchi and his crew witnessed two unidentified objects to their left. The two objects with two rectangular structures of what appeared to be thrusters or nozzles started tailing their airplane. It got close enough to the cockpit that they felt the heat of the objects on their skin while the cabin was lit up with a bright light. 12 minutes after the object's arrival, the two crafts left.

Shortly after the first two anomalies, another ship followed. This was the alleged mothership of the two crafts that resembled a flying disk and, allegedly, was the size of two aircraft carriers. Captain Terauchi was subsequently grounded for talking about the sighting and was given a desk job in exchange for being a pilot.

Captain Terauchi was an ex fighter pilot with 10,000 hours of flight time logged, so what he saw on that night may not be an incorrect report.

14. 1976 Tehran UFO Incident

In the early morning of September 19, 1976 in Tehran, a shining object was reported to fly overhead the city. This was subsequently picked up by the Iranian air force as they had visual and radar lock of the UFO. Lieutenant Yaddi Naziri and a backseat weapons officer were dispatched to intercept the target in a F-4 Phantom Jet 11 Interceptor.

Once they reached Tehran, he reported to lose all necessary instruments and communications, prompting them to return to base, which then subsequently came back on as they landed.

Shortly after this, another fighter jet was dispatched to intercept the craft piloted by Major Parvis Jafari along with First Lieutenant Jalal Damirian. They eventually found the object on their radar with a size comparable to that of a Boeing Stratotanker. When visual confirmation was established on the object, Jafari described it as “flashing with intense red, green, orange, and blue lights so bright that I was not able to see its body”.

As he approached the craft, his communications systems shut down, same as the previous fighter jet. He attempted to fire at the UFO with his sidewinder missiles but as he confirmed a target lock, his systems shut down and only returned to normal as he went away from the craft.

Jafari later said that something came out of the craft and started trailing him “as if it were a missile” As he was going away he saw “the primary diamond-shaped thing up there, and another bright object came out of it and headed directly toward the ground”.

He observed the bright object slow down as it approached the ground and then emitted a bright light as it did. Residents near the landing site reported hearing a loud noise and a bright light at night. In short, something unknown was in the sky and on the ground that day in Tehran.

13. Ariel School UFO Incident

Usually when kids tell us stories about their imaginary friends or any other assortment of strange and whimsical beings, we usually just brush it off as a product of their young minds. But when more than a dozen children tell stories about the same thing that they saw, then maybe it's more than just tall tales.

On September 16, 1994 at the Ariel School outside Ruwa, Zimbabwe, 62 pupils aged between 6 to 12 witnessed one or more silver craft descend from the sky and land on a field near their school. One or two black-clad beings exited the craft and approached the children.

They then reportedly communicated with them telepathically and relayed a message with an environmental theme. After the encounter which lasted all in a span of 15 minutes, the crafts and beings left. The children went to tell the faculty what they saw but were immediately dismissed

Prior to the encounter, there were already reports of strange fireballs in the sky with which people in the area reported. After the incident, many reporters and professors came to visit the schoolchildren and the school to investigate the area and interview the children who have witnessed the event.

BBC correspondent Tim Leach went on to interview the children, and all of them relayed to her the exact same story with drawings that the children made depicting thebeings and craft that were reported, a disk shaped object with strange alien-looking beings.

The aftermath of the encounter still resonates with the children until today. In 2014 in an interview in Mail & Guardian, one witness claims that she's afraid that the creatures will return someday and can even feel them when they are inside the atmosphere. With a staggering 62 witnesses for this encounter, one has to wonder that maybe it's more than just tall tales.

12. Shag Harbour UFO Incident

On the night of October 4, 1967, reports came in that something had crashed into the waters of Shag Harbour in Nova Scotia. At least 11 people saw a lit object crash into the waters. Witnesses reported to hear a whooshing sound like a bomb then a loud bang go off. The object itself was never fully identified which led to its classification as an unidentified flying object.

The first report of the incident was made by Laurie Wickens and his friends as they were driving near Shag Harbour. As they were driving, they spotted a large object descending into the harbor. As they found a better vantage point to witness the crash, Wickens and his friends saw an object floating 250m to 300m off the shore of the harbor.

They then reported this to the authorities as they believed they saw a crash of a small airplane.

As the authorities arrived they saw the unidentified object in the water starting to sink with its lights still showing as it slowly disappeared from view. The strange thing about this UFO report is that no missing aircraft or any aeronautical vehicle was reported as missing.

Every plane that was in the air at the time was accounted for and no reports of malfunctions and or distress signals were ever radioed out on the day of the crash.

The head of the air force in Ottawa, Squadron Leader Bain, who recommended that the navy take up an underwater search to find the object was adamant that they would find something in the harbor. But as the search went one, the navy stated “not a trace, not a clue, not a bit of anything was ever found”

Questions are still left unanswered all these years since the incident. Why was there no wreckage found? If all aerial aircraft are accounted for, what fell in the harbor? Was the aircraft from this world or not?

11. Belgian UFO Wave

In November of 1989, the start of a wave of UFO sightings were reported by the citizens of Belgium within which they described a giant black triangle hovering overhead but making no sound whatsoever.

The sightings restarted in March of 1990 when new sightings of new objects were reported which was confirmed by two separate military radar stations. Two F-16 fighter jets were scrambled to intercept the targets and actually caught the anomalies on their radar lock which has been shown to the Belgian media after the events.

The object that was locked on the radar of the fighter jets seemed to defy the laws of physics as it performed several impossible maneuvers like a rapid descent that would kill any normal being to performing sharp left and right turns with no loss of speed or motion that is impossible to maneuver by any known human.

With a total number of witnesses amounting to a staggering 13,500 individuals who saw the UFO, it became one of the most widely known reports of UFO sightings to have ever been recorded. The Belgian Air Force had no explanation for what the strange events were but they have acknowledged that there was indeed an unknown aircraft that flew over the skies in Belgium.

One interesting thing to note about this wave of sightings is that Belgium has one of the brightest cities in the world with their infrastructures and buildings always being lit up at night. This could even be seen by astronauts on the moon.

10. The Disappearance of Frederick Valentich

Frederick Valentich was an Australian pilot with 150 hours of flight time on record. He was also a member of the RAAF Training Corps and he was determined to pursue a career in aviation. But despite these qualifications that Valentich had, he suddenly disappeared without any trace while flying over the Bass Strait in Australia.

His last haunting words on record during his correspondence with air traffic control was “It’s hovering and it’s not an aircraft”.

His disappearance happened while he was on a training flight over the Bass Strait which separates the island of Tasmania to the mainland of Australia. As he was flying, he reported to Melbourne air traffic control that he was being followed by an unknown aircraft about 1000 feet above him.

He described the craft to be illuminated by four bright landing lights. He was unable to get an ID as to what the craft was but described its speed to go at “high speed”.

Valentich then reported to air traffic control that the craft was orbiting near him and that it had a shiny metal surface while it emanated a green light from it. As this was happening, he then reported that he was suddenly experiencing engine problems.

When asked what kind of aircraft it was his reply was “it's not an aircraft”. His transmission to air traffic was cut off with an unidentified sound that was described as a “metallic, scraping sound”.

He was never heard from or seen again.

9. Rendlesham Forest Incident

Over 40 years ago, strange lights were sighted above and below the pine trees in Rendlesham Forest in the United Kingdom. What followed after these lights were reported have become one of the best documented UFO cases in history.

Sightings began on December 26, 1980 when three US military personnel spotted lights above Rendlesham Forest in Suffolk County and described that a triangular aircraft had landed in the forest. Two night safter this first sighting, the crafts returned to the forest. Deputy Base commander Charles Halt got news of the return of the crafts and immediately launched a search party to investigate.

Commander Halt described the object as a “red-orangey object. It was displacing sparks or molten metal”. After this, Commander Halt then described that the object silently exploded into white objects similar to fireworks then disappeared.

He couldn’t positively identify what he saw that night but he was sure that the object was under “intelligent control”.

After the sightings, investigations were conducted on the reported landing site of the UFO. Nick Pope of the UK Ministry of Defence came to investigate the area and found indentations in the ground that measured a perfect 9.8 meters on each side which formed a triangle. Burn marks were also found on the ground and on the trees surrounding the area with significantly high radiation levels detected on them.

The mystery of what landed on that December night in 1980 still endures today as there has been no definitive explanation to identify what it was. Whatever it was, it left evidence of its landing, and maybe even someday, might return.

8. Kecksburg UFO Incident

On the evening of December 9, 1965, a large fireball fell into the forest of Kecksburg in Pennsylvania. Before it did, the fireball was seen streaking above the skies of Northeastern America. Sightings from Indiana, New York, Virginia, and Ontario described the same things that night. The unknown object left behind in its streakburning materials that caused small fires throughout Ohio and Pennsylvania.

The object eventually landed in Kecksburg which was cordoned off by armed men as reported by the residents of the area. The armed men stopped the residents of Kecksburg from investigating the supposed crash site. But there have been eyewitnesses who managed to see the craft up close.

Bill Bulebush claims to have seen the object turn in the sky as if it was being controlled before crashing. He went to investigate the crashed craft and saw a smoldering 10 foot acorn shaped object. The object was glowing, cracking, and sparking which scared off Bulebush.

James Romansky was another resident who allegedly saw the object along with a group of volunteer firefighters as they thought it was a plane crash. Instead he and the group came upon a metallic acorn shaped object that was covered in a type of writing similar to hieroglyphics.

The Kecksburg UFO incident lives on today with the strange shape of the craft that was found and the events that came after. This event has turned Kecksburg into a tourist attraction for UFO enthusiasts and can see a model UFO placed outside the local fire station.

7. Trans-en-Provence Case

A little known UFO case but a well documented one and of the more intriguing cases as physical evidence has been left in the form of burn marks and indents on the ground is the Trans-en-Provence case that happened in the french department of Var in Southeastern France.

The event happened on January 8, 1981 when Renato Nicolai, a 55 year old farmer, heard a strange whistling sound while working on his property. He then saw a saucer shaped object 2.5 meters in diameter land 50 feet away.

According to him "The device had the shape of two saucers, one inverted on top of the other. It must have measured about 1.5 meters in height. It was the color of lead. This device had a ridge all the way around its circumference. Under the machine I saw two kinds of pieces as it was lifting off. They could be reactors or feet. There were also two other circles which looked like trapdoors. The two reactors, or feet, extended about 20 cm below the body of the machine.

He then saw the object take off and departed to the northeast. As it did, it left burn marks on the ground and indentations where it landed.

The local police came the next day and took photos of the supposed landing site and took soil samples of the area which yielded results that the ground was pressed down by a mechanical pressure equivalent to 4 to 5 tons and heated in between 300 to 600 degrees celsius. Indeed indicating that something landed on that day.

6. Petrozavodsk Phenomenon

Sightings of a strange luminous object appeared suddenly on the night sky of numerous areas which ranged from Copenhagen, Helsinki, and Vladivostok. The strange object was named after Petrozavodsk in Russia where a glowing object was reportedly seen that showered the city with rays of unexplained light.

The incident happened on September 20, 1977 where eyewitnesses claimed to have seen an enormous “jellyfish” move slowly in the sky and stayed above the city of Petrozavodsk. The object spread over the sky and showered the city with extremely thin beams that resembled rain.

After being observed in the sky in a span of 10 to 12 minutes, the beams of light vanished and the jellyfish-like object transformed into a “bright semicircle” and moved in the direction of Lake Onega where it slowly dissipated.

The event was widely reported the next day. In Helsinki, eyewitnesses claimed to see a glowing ball in the sky. In Turku, two men reportedly saw a spinning object similar to a lifebuoy and in Denmark where pilots flying over Copenhagen saw a glowing object in the sky.

Theories as to what this phenomenon was ranges from atmospheric beasts to “space jellyfish” to missile tests that turned ethereal and otherworldly under specific circumstances in the atmosphere. Whatever the object was, it has managed to astonish and confound researchers 45 years after its sudden appearance.

5. Kenneth Arnold UFO Sighting

Our use of the term “flying saucer” for UFOs came from this encounter in 1947. The incident happened on June 24, 1947 when Kenneth Arnold saw a string of nine, shiny flying unknown aircraft of unknown origin flying past Mt. Rainier at speeds that Arnold estimated to be flying at a speed of over 1200 mph.

This sighting was the first post World War II report in the United States that caught the attention of the nationwide media and is credited as the start of the modern era of UFO sightings. The description of the objects of what he saw led to the press coining the term flying saucer that has been the popular descriptive term for UFOs

The sighting happened when Kenneth Arnold flew over Mt. Rainier on a business trip. He describes the day of his sighting as a clear day with no clouds in the sky with a mild wind blowing. As he was flying, a bright glint that resembled the sun reflecting off a mirror caught his attention. He thought that it was a plane near him but saw nothing except for a commercial airline behind him 15 kilometers away.

After seeing the first glint, he then saw a series of bright flashes in the distance that came from unidentified flying objects that flew in a long chain. He looked for the tail of the strange aircraft but he was shocked when he saw none. The objects then flew past the mountain and went in front of his plane.

The objects were dark against the snow of the mountain but still pulsated bright lights as the objects flipped around erratically. He describes that the objects were so thin that when on their edge they almost looked invisible. The movement of the objects were reported to move like “saucers that skipped on water”.

People continue to see flying saucers today, 75 years after first sighting. There is no denying that his encounter is what started it all, despite the reported shapes of UFOs changing since then from saucers to delta-shaped craft to flying triangles and acorns.

4. Phoenix Lights

A string of sightings of a V-shaped or triangle shaped object or objects were reported by thousands of eyewitnesses over a span of 480 kilometers from Arizona through Nevada on March 13, 1997.

Dubbed as the Phoenix Lights or Lights over Phoenix, were observed from 7:30 pm to 10:30 PM that were backed up by hundreds of photo and video evidence with eyewitness reports from ordinary citizens to the state governor himself.

There were two significant events in the mass sighting: a triangular shaped formation seen to pass over the states, and a series of stationary lights seen over the city of Phoenix. The first event was described as being “otherworldly” as told by eyewitnesses. The size of the triangular craft was described to be as big as a commercial airplane.

One anonymous eyewitness described to KTAR News said that he saw a gigantic boomerang shaped object that he estimated to be a mile wide fly over the Granite Mountain.

He describes his encounter with the object to be “totally silent. I’ve never seen anything even close to the colors from the exhaust that propelled that thing. It was as big as downtown Prescott and completely blocked out the stars”.

The second event was reported by an unidentified police officer who saw a series of stationary red and orange lights hanging over the valley. Governor Fife Symington treated this event as a joke at a press conference about the event but later retracted his statement as he admitted to have seen the lights himself and described his sighting as being “otherworldly”

Military flares were the official explanation by the military but numerous tests to try and copy the lights with the use of military flares only turned out to be false. Arizona itself has the highest concentration of UFO sightings in the USA, prompting a possibility that something was there on that night in 1997 and might have possibly kept returning as similar lights in the sky were also reported in 2007 and 2008.

The Mcminnville UFO photographs or the Trent UFO photos, were taken by Paul and Evelyn Trent near Mcminnville, Oregon on May 11, 1950. The photos gained nationwide notoriety as they were printed in Life magazine and on newspapers across the nation.

The images of the UFO have become one of the most recognizable and famous photographs to have ever been taken of a UFO and have never been fully discounted as a hoax or otherwise as analysis of the subject in the images depicted a genuine three-dimensional object in the sky.

The sighting of the UFOs started when Evelyn Trent was walking back to her house after feeding their rabbits. As she was walking, she noticed a slow-moving, metallic disc shaped object heading to her direction from the northeast. She called for her husband, Paul, and as he went outside their house,he also saw the strange flying object.

After he and his wife observed the object for a certain time, he went back inside their house to grab their camera and managed to take two photographs of the craft before it suddenly flew away westward. Paul Trent’s father also claimed to have seen the flying object.

The photos were examined by a local news reporter named Bill Powell. He found no evidence of tampering or any evidence that they were faked. On June 8, 1950, Powell’s story accompanied with the two photos were published on the front page of the Mcminnville Telephone-Register with the headline: “At Long Last - Authentic Photographs of Flying Saucer”

2. Miracle of the Sun

A prophecy was made by three shepherd children, Lucia Santos and Francisco and Jacinta Marto, where they claimed that the Virgin Mary would appear and perform miracles on October 13, 1917 in Fatima, Portugal which was taken as a miracle by the onlookers.

Newspapers published the events that were seen by the onlookers and said that the “Sun” performed extraordinary maneuvers and actions, such as reports of it“dancing” or doing zig-zags, appearing to crash into the ground, and emit radiant multicolored light. These events lasted for about 10 minutes.

Eyewitness described the start of the “miracle” when after a period of rain, the dark clouds broke and a strange apparition which the onlookers only described as being the sun itself appearing but as a spinning opaque disk in the sky. It was said to be significantly duller than normal and was casting multicolored lights that illuminated the landscape, the onlookers, and the clouds.

The "Sun" then suddenly careened down to Earth but stopped abruptly and zig-zagged its way back to its original position. The witnesses who were previously wet by the rain suddenly had dry clothes and the surrounding area and mud had all dried up. The “Sun” then continued to “dance” in the sky.

Whatever the events that happened in 1917 in Fatima were, whether it was a miracle or an otherworldly visit, its mystery endures to this day.

Described as “the world’s most famous, most exhaustively investigated, and most thoroughly debunked UFO claim” of all time is the Roswell Crash of 1947. In the whole history of UFO lore and sightings, the one in Roswell is the one that inspires the most fascination and speculation 75 years after its occurrence.

Sometime between mid June and early July of 1947, rancher W.W. Brazel found a strange wreckage on his property in Lincoln County, New Mexico, 75 miles north of Roswell. With several stories of flying saucers already appearing in the newspapers, Brazel believed that whatever wrecked on his property was something similar to what people were reporting to see in the sky.

The next day, the RAAF released a statement that stated they have gained the undeniable proof and possession of a flying disc that had crashed in a ranch on Roswell. This statement was later retracted stating that it wasn’t a flying saucer but rather a mundane weather balloon.

The question that lingers on people's minds up until now is, why the retraction after already stating that what was found was undeniable proof of an extraterrestrial vehicle?

Major Jesse Marcel, who was one of the first people to investigate the crash site, took some pieces of the debris home so as to share them with his family as he believed that what crashed on that day would be world changing.

The material looked similar in appearance to tin foil but when crumpled up into a ball would bounce back to its original state. The material was also cut with a knife but it seemed to heal after and was hit with a hammer but the hammer bounced back as it was not able to make a dent on the strange material.

UFO sightings are still prevalent today and will probably never stop until definitive proof is found of their existence.

Destroy all Humans 2 really gets you going when you need that fast paced, fighting theme to make you all excited. If it werent for the bad mouth of the Alien himself this game is pretty decent.

Pretty much the roles here have changed, you arent some fat, hairy human. Oh no, you are an alien who must work with humans.

The Alien invader returns, groovier than ever but this time he isnt looking to go back home empty handed. After the KGB blows up his spaceship, it is time for sweet revenge. Uncover your enemies' schemes and form alliances with the very beings that you came to enslave.

Riding space shuttles, mind controlling powers and most importantly a damsel in distress. You dont see games like this often on the market.

When you need the best to protect earth, no one is better than the Earth Defense force.

The graphics, CGI and most importantly the action in Earth Defense Forces really hits it home and makes you want to jump right into it and keep playing for hours.

The only way out for mankind now is to bring in the very best for this mission.

Earth Defense Force 5 is a solid wave-based shooter game, built on top of a deep class-based loadout and levelling system. Missions feature dozens of huge, sci-fi alien enemies attacking head-on in a completely wrecked up city.

The game trailer is filled with exciting moments and makes you wonder how deep is the ocean itself. The realistic monsters and aliens that lurk in the darkness of the sea has got this game to stand in our top 10.

Subnautica is one of those games that you would wish to erase all of your memories and plunge back in for another try.

In Galaxy Trucker, your goal will be to make as much money as possible for delivering cargo. You will achieve that goal in two parts: building your spaceship/truck and then surviving the delivery route long enough to transport your said cargo in (hopefully) one piece.

In the building rounds, you start with your board that has your cabin in the center. You then grab from a pile of facedown tiles that have the cargo you want as well as other space truck essentials and flip them up to attach to the cabin to make your sweet ride. Of course, your truck needs to be functional, meaning that any thrusters you find MUST point to the back of the ship, with nothing blocking their path.

You’ll also find lasers, engines, and cabins, which you’ll want to add as much to your vehicle as possible for later, but there should be nothing built in front of the lasers. More cabin space will also mean more crew for your ship. Meet special requirements, and you’ll also acquire alien crewmen, which will boost your truck’s laser/engine power.

Make your vehicle and hope that it survives the trip!

After you make your truck, you shove off to make your delivery. Along the way, you’ll be pulling from a deck of cards that determine your next course of action. You may encounter planets where you can grab more cargo for your ship. You may run into an abandoned ship to grab more scrap. Or you may run into space pirates that will challenge the integrity of your truck and your crew, which is why having plenty of weapons and engine power is important to have a safe voyage.

In Space Alert, you and 3-4 other players must work together to meet a certain objective of the game that is presented in the soundtrack. The level of difficulty is determined by the team beforehand.

Each turn consists of action rounds and resolution rounds. Action rounds have cards that you flip over which will determine where you need to go on the ship and what to do. Depending on the instructions on the soundtrack, these can include firing a laser, gathering energy for the next attack, or going to deal with alien intruders inside the ship.

Resolution cards act as the “play button” for your action cards. . In short, you decide what to do in the action round, then you go and do it in the resolution round. As you move through the ship and complete actions in the action round, you will reveal the enemy's locations and defeat them if you are prepared.

The game is won when all objectives are met by all of the players and all three sectors of your ship are still in your possession.

This is a very interesting game as it requires a soundtrack or scenario card to be played fully. If you use the soundtrack, you’ll be greeted with somewhat cheesy voice acting, but it adds depth to the game that has to be experienced at least once. And the best part is that each mission lasts 10 minutes, so there are a lot of opportunities to replay this game over and over again in one sitting.

They Live is a purely comical political satire that will keep you entertained throughout its whole duration. It’s a film full of tongue and cheek as well as some pretty likable cast of characters which makes it very easy to fall in love with it.

Although it may lack scares, it's still a fun film that you should definitely check out.

11. Alien 3 (1992)

Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) is the only survivor when she crashes lands on Fiorina 161, a bleak wasteland inhabited by former inmates of the planet's maximum-security prison. Once again, Ripley must face skepticism and the alien as it hunts down the prisoners and guards.

It may be a divisive entry to the amazing Alien franchise but this follow-up is undeniably one of the best that the sub-genre has to offer. The film is soaking in heavy atmosphere and tension, as it provides a dramatic closure to Ripley’s terror-filled adventure.

Although it may have a few controversial changes to the franchise and has a very outdated CGI, the film is nevertheless a spectacular entry that you should miss.

10. Signs (2002)

A widowed former reverend living with his children and brother on a Pennsylvania farm finds mysterious crop circles in their fields, which suggests something more frightening to come.

M. Night Shyamalan has produced many classics, and his 2002 film Signs is definitely one of those. It’s got so many creepy moments heightened by well put suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Add in the creativity of Shyamalan and you are guaranteed one engaging film will a shocking plot twist to boot.

9. A Quiet Place Part II (2021)

Set shortly after the events of the first film, the Abbot family must now face the terrors of the outside world as they continue their fight for survival in silence.

The first A Quiet Place film was an original and inventive film that created tension from start to finish, and this follow-up delivers the same thrill that you would expect and then some. While the first film only took place inside a small remote area, this sequel fleshed out many of the first film’s ideas to create a bombastic film that will make you hold your breath through its entire duration.

7. 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)

Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) is held in an underground bunker by a man who insists that a hostile event has left the surface of the Earth uninhabitable.

Nobody really expected this follow-up to the 2008 found footage horror film to be this great despite going almost in a completely different direction than its predecessor. Instead of focusing on a giant monster attacking the town, the film instead takes its time to build instead within its three characters inside a claustrophobic space, making for one of the most thrilling viewing experiences you’ll ever have.

But when the huge twist does come, the film somehow gets better as it shows you one of the most bombastic third acts ever. 10 Cloverfield Lane is easily a must-watch if you want a nonstop tension film.

6. A Quiet Place (2018)

Set in a post-apocalyptic world, a family is forced to live in silence while hiding from monsters with ultra-sensitive hearing.

A Quiet Place is a masterclass in tension, as it builds suspense from start to finish and never lets you go. It’s a film where every single noise, whether it may be quiet or loud feels shocking to hear as the inventively designed creatures may come running, making for one of the most heart-pounding movies you’ll ever experience.

The film also manages to make you care about its characters deeply, making the intense third act not only such a thrilling moment but also a somber one at that.

It’s also a film that’s so influential and some even consider to be a superior sequel that is still referenced to this day and makes it very easy to see why it’s still one of the best Alien films you’ll ever watch.

2. The Thing (1982)

A remake of the 1951’s The Thing From Another World, follows a research team in Antarctica who is hunted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of its victims.

While it may not be as well-liked today as when it was released, The Thing has definitely proven itself to be an all-time classic. It’s got an isolated setting that will make you claustrophobic as well as suspicious thanks to the tension that the film provides as it makes you guess which ones the creature. The film also has many memorable moments that will stay with you for a long time.

It was difficult to decide which film would go to the top spot as many of these films are all amazing for different reasons, and while The Thing may not have reached number one, you can’t deny that it’s one of the best films of all time.

It’s a good show for kids but adults also like it. The characters' voices are very nice and very fitting to the actual characters. It’s not like any other animated series given it has been compared to Teen Titans. It’s similar but it's not the same. If you like Teen Titans, you’d like this one.

This show features an astronaut named Gary who was abandoned and left alone on a spaceship all by himself and his sidekick Mooncake (who has a very aggressive, planet-destroying side) as they travel the universe fighting other aliens trying to figure out if it has an end.

This is one of those shows that you really have to get into. Once you watch the first episode you’ll be hooked! It’s funny, it's epic, it's sad, and it’ll give you every emotion you can experience when watching an animated tv series. This show is good for adults who like this type of humor.

Today, the indie scene has filled the gaps for true horror; we still get a new, big, horror game, like, once a year. But those are only zombie-themed shoot-em-ups without any real frights to offer, right?

WRONG!

True, regular, huge new horror titles aren’t a thing like they used to be, but the horror genre has always been comfortable with things staying half-alive.

New and old, the triple-A industry has produced some amazing horror that can still scare you to death.

The newest entry in the RE franchise. Village takes last game’s protagonist Ethan Winters through a campy, fright-filled ride that ties it all back together to the lore of Resident Evil.

The game is a little less scary than the original, but that’s by design. Whereas Biohazard focused more on a claustrophobic and tense experience, Village goes out of its way to make the experience fun and exciting.

That is not to say that the game isn’t scary. The halls of castle Dimitrescu, the hallways of house Beneviento, and the infested streets of the village are all filled with surprises and horrors that will have you dreading whatever comes next.

Innovation in the RE franchise has always been a bit of a hit-or-a-miss, but the new folk horror approach and the marriage between 4 and 7 make for one of the best titles in the series and one that you’d be a fool to miss.

11. Condemned: Criminal Origins (PC / XBOX 360)

Fresh from its fifteenth anniversary, Condemned puts you in the role of a detective slowly descending into a world of horror and madness after an investigation gone wrong.

Criminal Origins is arguably the best entry in the Condemned series. The game slowly but surely goes from an average detective story to a world of psychological horror.

This is one of those games that feel dreadful to play, but not in a bad way, somehow. The ambients, the combat, the story. It all works to unnerve and trap you.

Much like the game protagonist, you’ll soon find yourself making your way further into hell, but unable to go anywhere until you see the whole thing through.

Graphics be dammed!

This game looked impressive in 2006 and it still does in 2021. Every bit of set design works to create a world that feels hostile at every turn.

Control is a surreal experience that draws heavy inspiration from Twin Peaks and the new weird.

In Control you play as Jessie Faden, the accidental director of the bureau of control, as you are trapped in a building known as the oldest house and tasked with freeing it from an evil entity called “the hiss”.

Control is not a horror game per se, in spite of its Lovecraftian inspirations. Still, it explores weird and intriguing new concepts and fear of the unknown in a way that only the best horror can.

Control is a lot of things. It’s strange, surreal, fun, and petrifying all at once. It might lack dark hallways and a powerless protagonist, but it’s still some of the best of the best when it comes to cosmic forces and existential dread.

9. Returnal (PS5)

Returnal is a roguelike truly fit for the next generation. The game is fast and frustrating, bombastic and fun.

The game puts you in the role of Selene. An astronaut that finds herself on a hostile planet, where every time she dies she goes back to the beginning.

The roguelike setting is a match made in heaven for the Groundhog Day type of story, and it all works together to convey a feeling of deep hopelessness and confusion.

Cosmic horror is a hard genre to do. How do you convey a force way larger than the scope of your imagination? A power that is neither evil nor good, but a different thing altogether?

Returnal is a feat in game design and a game that uses every mechanic to enrich the story and the themes.

Also, if you have a PS5, you have to use that thing for something, ya’ know? It can’t be just for playing remasters and raising the room temperature.

8. Alan Wake (PC / XBOX One / XBOX 360)

Alan Wake is not only another game from remedy, it also canonically takes place in the same universe as Control.

In Alan Wake, you play as a writer that suddenly finds himself fighting a powerful force outside of his understanding, while trying to solve the mystery of his wife’s disappearance.

The game is formated as a television series, with every chapter lasting about an hour, and it flows better if you do play it bit by bit.

Alan Wake is definitively a product of its time. The hackneyed but self-aware plot devises the countless homages to Twin Peaks, the framing narrative. Every part of the game is undeniably 2010’s in some way or another.

Like hair metal, it only goes out of fashion, but never out of style. High-quality horror and a healthy degree of cheesiness are exactly what makes Alan Wake one of the best horror games maybe ever, and one that you should definitively play if you haven’t already.

The game can switch from terrifying scares and combat-avoiding tension to fun power-fantasy zombie-killing and back again in an instant.

Dying Light is a game that has something for everybody, it juggles a lot of things but never bites more than it can chew.

I’m well aware that whenever I mention horror videogames everybody’s first thought is “Dating Sim Puzzle Platformer that explores the nature of romantic relationships in a brutal depiction of modern love.” But hear me out before you toss Catherine aside for being unoriginal.

Catherine is a cult classic, beloved and renowned by gamers from all walks of life.

The story is original, funny, and intriguing. The gameplay is fun and challenging, and the horror and romance work together brilliantly. It all makes for a game unlike any other.

Not only that, but Catherine is surprisingly insightful. Like all the best horror, it turns your head to the weird and frightening aspects of real life and uses its deformed lens to show you the grotesque hiding in plain sight.

Catherine might not be for everyone. But it’s great for gamers that enjoy puzzles, a challenge, a well-written story, memorable characters, horror that haunts you when you close your eyes and/or thinking in general.

5. Dead Space 2 (PC / PS3 / XBOX 360)

The original Dead Space showed the possibilities of sci-fi horror in gaming in a way that hadn’t been explored before, and the sequel expanded on everything that made the original great, and we don’t talk about Dead Space 3.

The game even received criticism for being, at times, “too scary to play”.

In RE 7, you play as Ethan Winters, as you find yourself trapped in a house with a family of cannibalistic and murderous mutants, as you try to find your wife who supposedly died 3 years ago.

Think Silent Hill combined with the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, enhanced by the terrifying visuals offered by the RE engine.

The Evil Within 2 is fantastic. It’s everything its prequel wishes it was, it’s terrifying, intriguing, emotionally resonant, and delightfully self-indulgent.

The Evil Within 2 follows as Sebastian Castellanos looks for his daughter in the nightmare-infested world of STEM. A virtual world constructed from the psyche of those who enter.

Imagine the Animus but with a lot more chainsaw monsters.

It’s a story you’ve heard a hundred times already, but it all feels new when the execution is this flawless.

The Evil Within 2 does horror open-world like few others, the monster design is original and phenomenal, and it can have you screaming, laughing, and crying at a moment’s notice.

There are no two ways about it: The Evil Within 2 is one of the best horror games of the decade, and arguably one of the best of all time.

2. Alien: Isolation (PC / Mac / PS4 / PS3 / XBOX One / XBOX 360 / Nintendo Switch)

Alien: Isolation has you playing Ripley’s daughter, investigating the fate of her mother and the crew of the U.S.C.S.S. Nostromo.

The game does a lot of things great, the level design, the graphics, and the sound. Every system, every detail works to create an immersive horror game.

But there’s one thing that sets this game apart and puts it in a league of its own: the Antagonist.

The Alien is not only beautifully designed, but also programed masterfully. Making the most of some of the best enemy AI to date, the Alien can hunt you down, misdirect and trick you in a way that hasn’t been replicated since.

Isolation gives you a formidable foe and it demands that you use your wits and your bravery to rise to the occasion, just like Ripley did in her time.

The game is not for the faint of heart, it doesn’t go easy on you, and you shouldn’t expect to win every time.

Many games will tell you that the odds are stacked against you. In Alien: Isolation, they truly are.

The GOAT, the OG, the grandaddy. If you’ve played any third-person shooters or survival horror games in the last fifteen years you have felt this game’s influence on the medium.

Resident Evil 4 meant a completely new direction for the franchise. Changing gears from the spooktacular camp of abandoned mansions to a combat-oriented focus.

The subsequent entries in the franchise might have fumbled the ball, but there’s no denying the impact that RE 4 had on the medium.

Not only did it reinvent a formula that was starting to go a little stale, what made four great was its attention to detail and its acute sense of balance.

The game wasn’t just a not-zombie punching extravaganza. It was filled with moments of levity to outweigh the tension. It had calm whenever the action got too crazy. It didn’t take itself too seriously, but it always respected what it was trying to achieve.

I mean, go back and read the list of available platforms! A game doesn’t get re-made a thousand times over unless the public keeps asking for more.

Horror isn’t a part of the AAA industry the same way it was way back when, and it’s true that we’ve had some spectacular misses in the last few years. But the big-name developers have and still are producing some fantastic pieces of horror gaming that must be played by anyone that considers themselves a horror fan.

So don’t worry, horror hasn’t gone anywhere. It’s still there.

Predator Powers And Abilities

A predator and his trophies.

An extraterrestrial species that use advanced technology and hunt worthy opponents in order to be blooded. They use tech on their hunts such as active camouflage and directed energy weapons to gain an edge over their prey.

Typically taking the skull and spine of their victims as trophies, these aliens are brutal and morbid. They have humanoid-like skeletal structures but are distinguished by their greater height, mandibles, and long appendages on their heads that look much like dreadlocks.

They’re stronger and much more capable of enduring pain compared to humans. They can survive wounds from gunshots and lethal amounts of radiation, especially with their first aid kits built into their armor.

You don’t want to be considered a worthy opponent for these alien hunters. It won’t be fun when they hunt you down and kill you to become blooded in their tribe.

How the Battle Would Go Down

Batman and a Predator in hand to hand combat. To clarify a few things, Batman nor the Predator has ever met each other, and neither has studied the other. This ensures both are fighting using strictly their natural talents and standard equipment, as there is a comic book where Batman fights Predators but overcomes them only after he creates equipment that was specified to take on Predators.

Batman is one of the strongest and fastest mortal humans alive, but his physical attributes do not compare to a Predator’s. They are capable of breaking through concrete with a single punch, not to mention their ability to take gunfire and not need medical attention.

Bruce’s saving grace is his martial art mastery. All 127 forms he knows could keep him alive and even beat the Predator, however they aren’t both simply relying on just their bodies.

Both of them have the gear they use on a day to day basis. Batman has his batarangs, grappling hook, and probably flashbangs and sonic emitters to attract bats. The Predator on the other hand has wrist blades, bladed discs, spears, shoulder cannons, and a cloaking device to take on its prey.

Even for Batman, that is a lot. Their capabilities far outmatch Bruce’s. If he had time to study and understand the Predator like in the comic, this would be a different story, but there’s no time to retreat and build specialized weapons for this fight.

And The Winner Is...

Predator. The extraterrestrial hunter would be blooded in this battle, as he’d have Batman’s skull and spine as a trophy for his clan to witness.
