Upon entry, there are plenty of hiding spots available, and this gives the reader anxiety; what will you be hiding from?

In this investigative thriller, you’ll play as Alan Goldberg, a struggling horror movie screenwriter. You’ll start with Season One: Orphanage, and the developer will continue to release more themed seasons for free with new content.

In Season One: Orphanage, you need to use ghost hunting equipment to free the spirits of tormented children and banish the evil spirit haunting the rest of the village. You must evade scary ghosts that pop out at any given sound you make while successfully completing quests.

This RPG has an interesting take on life cycles; you’re allowed a certain number of revives that vary by difficulty. If you die, you go to purgatory and can watch your friends as they play and try to revive you. However, once you run out of revives, you’ll be stuck in purgatory, so tread lightly!

This game has a catch. You will be seventy-four years old and have limited mobility. Beware of how slowly you move; you can only run for a few seconds before you start panting and your vision quality decreases, signaling poor health. This really adds to the dread of the game since you have to slowly move around the house and you feel particularly vulnerable.

This game really reminds me of Outlast 2 and Amnesia. From the wooden buildings shrouded in overgrown brush to the unsettling religious imagery, this game is as dark and dreary as its counterparts. Similarly to the other games, everything looks super dry and like nothing has been alive in quite some time. It seems that death pervades this area, so explore cautiously!

A group of high school students jet off on an average school field trip and stumble upon a dilapidated, abandoned town that hasn’t seen life in many years. You’ll have to track down these demons, and most of your time will be spent investigating where they were last seen.

This game requires patience, just like real hunting. You have to rely on the financial and skill systems to progress in the game and unlock certain features (ex: Fast Travel), and an accumulation of needed materials and skills takes time. This game is really cool because it gives you the ability to choose to go back in. You can be brave and take on all five nightmares in one go, or split them up over the holiday season. Either way, it’ll keep you coming back for more of the interesting puzzles and thrilling jumpscares.

In this first-person psychological thriller, you’ll play as an unknown protagonist waking up in a desolate, creepy hotel. The best part about this game is that you are literally dropped into it with no knowledge of where you are, who you are, or what your situation is. Your lack of knowledge makes the game scarier, and the sound manipulation is so top-notch in unison with this. The sounds have you on edge; from her tiny gasps of fear to her panting as she runs, this game makes excellent use of sound. Play this game with a headset on, and you won’t regret it!

9. Fear Therapy - 2021 (PC, PS5, XBO)

Black Flag 1312’s Fear Therapy is a multi-mode horror survival game that uses holy water as a weapon against evil demons. You should play this game if you love suspense. This game does a great job at building intensity, and you’ll be able to hear rain pounding on the windows, booming thunder from overhead, and the floorboards eerily creaking with each step. Other than Rebecca’s self-dialogue and the smarling demons after her, you are totally isolated in the morgue, and knowing that ramps up the intensity.

Baggy Cat Limited has done something extraordinary with this point and click game. It’s a horror film and haunting gameplay seamlessly blended into one terrifying experience. Control the movie you’re watching and play as Maya, a student being hunted down by psychotic hotel owner Jimmy Hall. Trapped in the hotel’s confines, this game is a modernized blast from the past!

This game incorporates some ghost hunting; upon seeing how dangerous Jimmy is firsthand, Maya overhears a ghost and spirit receiver telling her to find out what he has done. However, are all of these ghosts harboring good intentions? When playing this game, you’ll have the stress of finding ghosts and evading Jimmy.

The film aspect of this game allows you to see what the protagonist cannot see, like Jimmy’s psycho meltdown upon Maya’s arrival. This makes this experience all the more chilling because you know you’re in trouble, but can do nothing to stop it. The point and click aspect also restricts your line of sight for the best jump scares. You never know what lies beyond a click!

A classic has been remastered, but is it as good as the original?

Remedy Entertainment released Alan Wake in 2010, and it was a huge success; it became a horror fan favorite for many avid gamers. It has recently been remastered to attract new fans and allow old fans to revisit their favorite game with new and improved graphics and story expansion.

This third-person psychological thriller follows an infamous writer, Alan Wake, and his journey to discover the truth about his wife's disappearance. Peel back the layers of mystery concealing his wife’s disappearance while warding off creations of Alan’s own mind.

This game really reminds me of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Like Frankenstein, Wake is the creator of his own demise at the hands of his creation, Hemust deal with figments of his imagination torturing him throughout the game. With enemies cloaked in peculiar darkness, he has no choice but to destroy what he has worked hard to construct.

Scared by unexplained leaps in time and sourceless, terrifying noises? Look no further.

Alex and Jonas are new step-siblings looking for an adventure to bring them closer together as a family. They decide to go to an overnight party on a former military island with their friends and expect the night to be filled with laughter and fun. However, they accidentally unveil a ghostly rift and must figure out a way to undo their mistake.

As daredevil Alex, you have the ability to choose your dialogue using very simple controls. When someone likes what you say, an icon of Alex’s face will appear in thought bubbles above the character’s head, and you can work on building relationships with other characters while evading scary ghosts. This is a really enjoyable and immersive aspect of the game.

This indie, graphic adventure game was developed by Night School Studio and is two-dimensional (2D). It has a different look than any other game on this list, but the winding paths and complicated routes to destinations make it very engaging. It has a traditional layout of many older games, like Terraria, released in 2011, with trivia and puzzle games.

The Last of Us is a story-driven game about the people we’re willing to become to survive. The story centers on Joel and his adopted daughter Ellie, as they journey through a zombie-infested America in the search for hope.

The game is more of an action drama, but the post-apocalypse and the nightmarish cordyceps can still deliver moments of true tension and horror.

Whatever your opinion on the sequel is (and for the record, I agree with you), this is one of the most important games of the last decade, and when it uses its setting for horror, you can be damn sure that horror is what you’ll get.

14. Until Dawn (PS4 / Android)

A perfect marriage between the narrative possibilities of a David Cage-y interactive movie and the B-horror from the eighties; Until Dawn is an unforgettable and fun experience that Supermassive Games hasn’t quite been able to replicate since.

Until Dawn is the Night Trap for the new generation. It’s a love letter to the classic horror tropes of yore and a great game for anyone looking to capture the feeling of living through one of the cheesiest movies in the Friday the Thirteenth franchise.

The game is filled with every staple of the genre: the cavin in the woods, the horny teens, the death traps. All while managing to sneak in a couple of genuinely surprising twists and turns.

It might be light on gameplay, but it’s still an experience worth having for any horror nerd.

13. Dead By Daylight (PC / PS4 / PS5 / XBOX One / Nintendo Switch / Android)

Dead By Daylight is an asymmetrical multiplayer game (hey, remember when those were a thing?) that puts three players in the role of survivors and a fourth on the role of the bloodthirsty killer chasing after them.

The game is an absolute romp, being cast as a survivor is a thrilling experience without being unwinnable, and the servers are surprisingly alive for a game so concerned with killing its players.

Dead By Daylight has more to offer to horror fans than just scary-themed fun. The game is filled with classic monsters and characters from all the best horror franchises, from Silent Hill to Evil Dead.

12. Resident Evil Village (PC / PS4 / PS5 / XBOX One / XBOX Series X)

The newest entry in the RE franchise. Village takes last game’s protagonist Ethan Winters through a campy, fright-filled ride that ties it all back together to the lore of Resident Evil.

The game is a little less scary than the original, but that’s by design. Whereas Biohazard focused more on a claustrophobic and tense experience, Village goes out of its way to make the experience fun and exciting.

That is not to say that the game isn’t scary. The halls of castle Dimitrescu, the hallways of house Beneviento, and the infested streets of the village are all filled with surprises and horrors that will have you dreading whatever comes next.

Innovation in the RE franchise has always been a bit of a hit-or-a-miss, but the new folk horror approach and the marriage between 4 and 7 make for one of the best titles in the series and one that you’d be a fool to miss.

11. Condemned: Criminal Origins (PC / XBOX 360)

Fresh from its fifteenth anniversary, Condemned puts you in the role of a detective slowly descending into a world of horror and madness after an investigation gone wrong.

Criminal Origins is arguably the best entry in the Condemned series. The game slowly but surely goes from an average detective story to a world of psychological horror.

This is one of those games that feel dreadful to play, but not in a bad way, somehow. The ambients, the combat, the story. It all works to unnerve and trap you.

Much like the game protagonist, you’ll soon find yourself making your way further into hell, but unable to go anywhere until you see the whole thing through.

Graphics be dammed!

This game looked impressive in 2006 and it still does in 2021. Every bit of set design works to create a world that feels hostile at every turn.

10. Control (PC / PS4 / PS5 / XBOX One / XBOX Series X / Nintendo Switch)

Control is a surreal experience that draws heavy inspiration from Twin Peaks and the new weird.

In Control you play as Jessie Faden, the accidental director of the bureau of control, as you are trapped in a building known as the oldest house and tasked with freeing it from an evil entity called “the hiss”.

Control is not a horror game per se, in spite of its Lovecraftian inspirations. Still, it explores weird and intriguing new concepts and fear of the unknown in a way that only the best horror can.

Control is a lot of things. It’s strange, surreal, fun, and petrifying all at once. It might lack dark hallways and a powerless protagonist, but it’s still some of the best of the best when it comes to cosmic forces and existential dread.

9. Returnal (PS5)

Returnal is a roguelike truly fit for the next generation. The game is fast and frustrating, bombastic and fun.

The game puts you in the role of Selene. An astronaut that finds herself on a hostile planet, where every time she dies she goes back to the beginning.

The roguelike setting is a match made in heaven for the Groundhog Day type of story, and it all works together to convey a feeling of deep hopelessness and confusion.

Cosmic horror is a hard genre to do. How do you convey a force way larger than the scope of your imagination? A power that is neither evil nor good, but a different thing altogether?

Returnal is a feat in game design and a game that uses every mechanic to enrich the story and the themes.

Also, if you have a PS5, you have to use that thing for something, ya’ know? It can’t be just for playing remasters and raising the room temperature.

8. Alan Wake (PC / XBOX One / XBOX 360)

Alan Wake is not only another game from remedy, it also canonically takes place in the same universe as Control.

In Alan Wake, you play as a writer that suddenly finds himself fighting a powerful force outside of his understanding, while trying to solve the mystery of his wife’s disappearance.

The game is formated as a television series, with every chapter lasting about an hour, and it flows better if you do play it bit by bit.

Alan Wake is definitively a product of its time. The hackneyed but self-aware plot devises the countless homages to Twin Peaks, the framing narrative. Every part of the game is undeniably 2010’s in some way or another.

Like hair metal, it only goes out of fashion, but never out of style. High-quality horror and a healthy degree of cheesiness are exactly what makes Alan Wake one of the best horror games maybe ever, and one that you should definitively play if you haven’t already.

7. Dying Light (PC / Mac / PS4 / XBOX One)

Dying Light was part of the many, many games that completely reinvent the zombie genre and flip it on its head. What makes it different is that this one is actually fun.

Take the first-person parkour from Mirror’s Edge, add a sprinkle of Evolve’s multiplayer, layer them on top of Dead Island, and Dying light is exactly what you get.

The game can switch from terrifying scares and combat-avoiding tension to fun power-fantasy zombie-killing and back again in an instant.

Dying Light is a game that has something for everybody, it juggles a lot of things but never bites more than it can chew.

By the way, did I mention that you can dropkick zombies from a skyscraper? Because you can totally dropkick zombies from a skyscraper.

6. Catherine (PC / PS3 / XBOX 360)

I’m well aware that whenever I mention horror videogames everybody’s first thought is “Dating Sim Puzzle Platformer that explores the nature of romantic relationships in a brutal depiction of modern love.” But hear me out before you toss Catherine aside for being unoriginal.

Catherine is a cult classic, beloved and renowned by gamers from all walks of life.

The story is original, funny, and intriguing. The gameplay is fun and challenging, and the horror and romance work together brilliantly. It all makes for a game unlike any other.

Not only that, but Catherine is surprisingly insightful. Like all the best horror, it turns your head to the weird and frightening aspects of real life and uses its deformed lens to show you the grotesque hiding in plain sight.

Catherine might not be for everyone. But it’s great for gamers that enjoy puzzles, a challenge, a well-written story, memorable characters, horror that haunts you when you close your eyes and/or thinking in general.

5. Dead Space 2 (PC / PS3 / XBOX 360)

The original Dead Space showed the possibilities of sci-fi horror in gaming in a way that hadn’t been explored before, and the sequel expanded on everything that made the original great, and we don’t talk about Dead Space 3.

Three years after the events of the original game, Isaac Clarke finds himself trapped in a space station overrun by Necromorphs, corpses brought to life by a mysterious alien infection.

Isaac will have to fight more than just monsters this time, as he faces the horrors that plague his mind and threaten to drive him insane.

How the whole thing ends is a mystery because WE DON’T TALK ABOUT DEAD SPACE 3.

Dead Space 2 is a little more action-heavy than its predecessor, but it never undercuts the terror created by the story, ambiance, and gameplay.

RE 7 was a breath of fresh air for a franchise that was on its last.

After the disastrous RE 6, Capcom took a moment to re-evaluate what made Resident Evil great in the first place and build from the ground up.

The result was a tense, first-person psychological horror experience that preserves the soul of Resident Evil while telling a completely new story.

The game even received criticism for being, at times, “too scary to play”.

In RE 7, you play as Ethan Winters, as you find yourself trapped in a house with a family of cannibalistic and murderous mutants, as you try to find your wife who supposedly died 3 years ago.

Think Silent Hill combined with the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, enhanced by the terrifying visuals offered by the RE engine.

The Evil Within is… not great. The long-awaited return to horror by director Shinji Mikami had some interesting ideas, but it explored them all in a very underwhelming manner. Which explains why so many people slept on the sequel, The Evil Within 2.

The Evil Within 2 is fantastic. It’s everything its prequel wishes it was, it’s terrifying, intriguing, emotionally resonant, and delightfully self-indulgent.

The Evil Within 2 follows as Sebastian Castellanos looks for his daughter in the nightmare-infested world of STEM. A virtual world constructed from the psyche of those who enter.

Imagine the Animus but with a lot more chainsaw monsters.

It’s a story you’ve heard a hundred times already, but it all feels new when the execution is this flawless.

The Evil Within 2 does horror open-world like few others, the monster design is original and phenomenal, and it can have you screaming, laughing, and crying at a moment’s notice.

There are no two ways about it: The Evil Within 2 is one of the best horror games of the decade, and arguably one of the best of all time.

2. Alien: Isolation (PC / Mac / PS4 / PS3 / XBOX One / XBOX 360 / Nintendo Switch)

Alien: Isolation has you playing Ripley’s daughter, investigating the fate of her mother and the crew of the U.S.C.S.S. Nostromo.

The game does a lot of things great, the level design, the graphics, and the sound. Every system, every detail works to create an immersive horror game.

But there’s one thing that sets this game apart and puts it in a league of its own: the Antagonist.

The Alien is not only beautifully designed, but also programed masterfully. Making the most of some of the best enemy AI to date, the Alien can hunt you down, misdirect and trick you in a way that hasn’t been replicated since.

Isolation gives you a formidable foe and it demands that you use your wits and your bravery to rise to the occasion, just like Ripley did in her time.

The game is not for the faint of heart, it doesn’t go easy on you, and you shouldn’t expect to win every time.

The GOAT, the OG, the grandaddy. If you’ve played any third-person shooters or survival horror games in the last fifteen years you have felt this game’s influence on the medium.

Resident Evil 4 meant a completely new direction for the franchise. Changing gears from the spooktacular camp of abandoned mansions to a combat-oriented focus.

The subsequent entries in the franchise might have fumbled the ball, but there’s no denying the impact that RE 4 had on the medium.

Not only did it reinvent a formula that was starting to go a little stale, what made four great was its attention to detail and its acute sense of balance.

The game wasn’t just a not-zombie punching extravaganza. It was filled with moments of levity to outweigh the tension. It had calm whenever the action got too crazy. It didn’t take itself too seriously, but it always respected what it was trying to achieve.

I mean, go back and read the list of available platforms! A game doesn’t get re-made a thousand times over unless the public keeps asking for more.

Horror isn’t a part of the AAA industry the same way it was way back when, and it’s true that we’ve had some spectacular misses in the last few years. But the big-name developers have and still are producing some fantastic pieces of horror gaming that must be played by anyone that considers themselves a horror fan.

So don’t worry, horror hasn’t gone anywhere. It’s still there.

Love some good old horror? Let’s reminisce over some of the best horror game trailers ever.

15. Penumbra: Black Plague

We can’t pass up Penumbra, it’s a bit of an older game, but it is a classic.

This trailer shows Penumbra’s first person gameplay. The character uses a light stick to guide them in the darkness. Players learn that they need to pull and drag items around in order to navigate the environment and uncover clues.

A textual message tells the player that they need them to do something that only they can do. The message urges the player not to make the same mistakes that they did. A strange human looking creature emerges. It is entirely bone white except for its disturbing red smeared grin. When it attacks the player we can see that its eyes are sunken in and it looks painfully emaciated.

This trailer doesn’t leave us without plenty of dead bodies that are thrown around the area and actually falling from above. There’s even a huge and creepy worm out to get the character. This game has players covered on all fronts.

14. Silent Hill HD Collection

What’s scarier than one Silent Hill? Three Silent Hills, even if the poor original game didn’t make it into the trailer.

This trailer treats us to iconic cut scenes from Silent Hill 2 such as when James encounters an enemy for the first time and looks at himself in the gross bathroom mirror. The video swaps to Heather from Silent Hill 3 who wonders if what she is experiencing is a dream. She navigates Silent Hill’s amusement park that has become as rusty and blood soaked as the rest of the town.

We get plenty of disturbing visuals of the game’s monsters as they twitch and slither around. There’s even a clip of Pyramid head’s moment with the mannequins from Silent Hill 2, an image that is forever burned into our minds.

Let the Silent Hill nostalgia begin.

13. Daylight

In Daylight’s trailer a voice welcomes the protagonist, Sarah. We see her as she uses a smartphone in her right hand as a flashlight and map. Deeply concerned, she asks the voice where he is as she navigates the game’s various environments.

Sarah’s left hand alternates with various items, such as a torch, Bible, and possible voodoo doll. While her right hand constantly holds onto the smartphone. The game warns us not to look back. Perhaps Sarah did not listen to this warning as a twisted female ghost jumps into view.

We can only wonder what else this game has in store for players.

12. Alan Wake

This trailer feels like one that could be for a suspense horror movie. It opens with praises of Alan Wake as a writer. However, we learn that he has been in a writing slump for years and goes on a vacation with his wife. He hopes that this will be the mental break from his slump that he needs.

A creepy old lady in black hands him the key to the cabin he is staying in and things take a turn for the twisted. His wife goes missing and shadow like creatures attack. Alan finds pages of a book that he has no memory of writing, but is the author of them. He wonders if these pages are predicting a terrible prophecy or are rewriting reality.

Alan resolves to hunt down these pages in order to save himself from the chaos he is fallen into and find his wife. But this video couldn’t end without another image of the creepy old woman as she stands over Alan, then flashes directly over to us, consuming the screen.

11. Left 4 Dead 2

This iconic trailer gets to the point with what Left 4 Dead 2 is all about.

The trailer shows images of the Deep South. A voice over of one of the characters shares a conversation he had with his grandmother. She asked if he still prays, he tells her yes. She tells him to pray harder, since it’s not enough. But he tells us that he isn’t going to wait for salvation, he’ll fight.

Then there’s a shift to mass destruction, explosions, and tons of zombies. Gun shots fire at the endless army of zombies. Most importantly, the trailer ends with game’s party members showing up. This four person party is bringing the zombies down with chainsaws, axes, and even frying pans. They’ll fight with all of the zombie killing stables.

10. Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Once we get past the stellar reviews of this game, the trailer really starts. The protagonist wakes up in an empty castle and looks around confused. Then they emerge in a darker underground looking area. There are rooms filled with water, countless barrels, and mysterious sounds.

A strange sound follows the character and the tension builds. The character becomes frantic, running from room to room to escape this menacing sound. The area begins to warp and the character is on the floor once more. A fleshy creature approaches the character and strikes his face. For a moment the screen is marked with blood.

This trailer serves as a warning to future players, there are many mysteries and warped creatures that await them in Amnesia.

9. Dead Space 3

Return to the terrifying space horror that we all love with Dead Space 3. The trailer opens with the eeriness of deep space. Nightmarish creatures erupt from the darkness and devour carcasses. We hear that a crew member and their team went missing as they went to check out an uncharted planet and it’s the player’s job to rescue them from the hell they’ve fallen into.

As the characters navigate a frozen tundra, we see hulking space monsters tear up the environment and people. The trailer ends on an ominous note as a freakishly huge monster swallows the protagonist. We all want to know how to get out of that partially digested mess.

8. The Evil Within

A soothing instrumental song plays throughout this trailer. This song covers up the protagonist, Sebastian, as he painfully drags himself down a long hallway. A menacing voice follows him, belittling Sebastian and claiming that he knows all about him. He says that he will make Sebastian do terrible things.

This man is revealed to be heavily scared and burned, wearing a long, dingy white coat. There are quick flashes of bodies hanging in bags, twitching and bleeding. We are shown a decaying hospital room, city falling apart, and Sebastian held down in a chair and metallic device that is zapping him.

Strange zombie like creatures attack Sebastian along with large, bloated, bloody, and hulking monsters. This trailer ends with the scared man reminds us once more that he created this world and is in complete control. We are all subject to his will.

7. Outlast

Perhaps the mention of this game brings shivers down your spine. The Outlast trailer does not disappoint. It opens with strange Nazi descriptions and images as well as the history of an asylum.

The trailer shifts as we follow a man enter into a blood smeared elevator that takes him to a decrepit medical looking area. There are bodies limply hanging from the wall and more blood cakes the area. The tension rises with the sight of creatures running around in the distance.

As the man enters into a dark room he uses his video recorder to see in the darkness, unveiling more dead bodies and gore. Even better, we see a strange human looking entity that has the man in his sights. He quickly needs to navigate the environment, telling future players that there will be lots of climbing, diving, and running.

He finds a room empty except for a bed. The man hides under it and uses his video camera to look in the darkness once more. The creature is reaching for him under the bed and the video ends. On this note, players know what kind of twisted world they’re getting into.

6. Dead Island

Viewers have to piece together Dead Island’s trailer as they watch it, and maybe watch some edited versions of it online.

A young girl lies dead on the ground. But then we see her running throughout a hallway, chased by a horde of zombies. Then the video seems to go in reverse, her dead body that was on the ground is flying back to the window of a hotel.

When we reach a hotel room she’s on a man’s back, it’s clear that she is a zombie taking a bite out of his neck. More zombies are in this hotel room, attacking the man and woman inside. The video switches between the young girl, still a human, running down the hall, and the couple a few seconds later, dealing with zombies in their room.

The video takes us back in the hall with the human girl, she is on the floor and a zombie takes a bite out of her leg. In what we can consider to be the middle point in time of this video, the man enters into the hallway to save the girl.

It ends with him reaching his arm out to her’s, hope on his face. The two do not know what is to soon become of them. This trailer was made to stab us in the heart and let us know that this game is out to beak gamers apart.

5. Dying Light

Dying Light gets us going with a quote from Camus’ classic work, The Plague. This quote might not make too much sense to those who haven’t experienced the game yet, but it’s chillingly fitting.

We see a thick accented man talk to the protagonist. From the way he talks, we can tell he’s strong, in control, and letting the protagonist know who the boss is. Then we see a rag-tag group of “runners” who risk everything to save others.

Emotions run high as we see the characters as they travel throughout the city, trying to help others and fend of zombies. We learn that the protagonist is a parkour teacher and the trailer features lots of parkour action for future players to tackle.

Before the trailer ends the accented man tells us that chaos is the order of things. When we see the zombies at the height of their abilities at night, we know this to be all too true.

4. Alien: Isolation

This trailer opens up with some old fashioned VHS grain, a throwback to how watching the original Alien movie on VHS would be. This grain doesn’t take away from how extremely gorgeous the graphics are. The viewer’s tension and curiosity builds as Amanda Ripley is scavenging and picks up a toy robot.

We see a lurking entity flick its limbs and slither around in the background. Amanda knows she’s in trouble and quickly hides. As she hides she takes out the toy robot and tinkers with it until it becomes a kind of tracking device. But what it’s tracking is right above her, and it’s the Alien.

This trailer freaks us out in all the right ways, introducing some of the games elements, fantastic graphics, and most importantly enough screen time of the terrifying Alien.

3. The Last of Us

We are in for a real treat with this cinematic trailer. Despite coming out a few years ago, it holds up graphically with current game releases.

The trailer opens with dead, bloodied bodies in what seems to be an apartment complex. There’s a young human girl named Ellie and man named Joel. We see that this girl isn’t to be underestimated as she no problem searching the unconscious body of the man that Joel knocked out.

As they hear approaching zombies, the two flee the room. It’s clear that Joel is protecting Ellie. The zombie like entity that comes to attack them isn’t like the zombies we are used to. Its head looks like it has imploded. As Joel grapples with the zombie, Ellie comes from behind and stabs it. Joel gets in a good headshot and the two escape.

This trailer is only the tip of the iceberg for one of the best zombie games.

2. Lone Survivor

This is hands down my favorite trailer on this list. I feel inspired each time I watch this trailer.

We get treated to a totally amazing song throughout the video that begins when a pixilated character snaps his fingers.

A swarm of quick images and short clips fill the rest of the video. It isn’t easy to describe what is going on. This is the trailer’s way of enticing our curiosity and pushing us to play this game and uncover the truth from ourselves.

What we can tell from this game is that it’s a hardcore survival horror game, warped in a pixilated package. We see a man in a surgical mask who is subjected to the chaos of the world he is trapped in. There are fleshy monsters, abandoned buildings, messages written in red across walls, and a dying world.

How could anyone not what to play this game?

1. Dead Island 2

Apart from being freaky, this trailer is also really funny. We see an overly tan, bleach blond man about to begin a jog. He covers up a nasty looking bite, plays his mp3 player, and gets going. He’s utterly dim witted as he flirts with a passing girl and is blind to the zombie outbreak occurring behind him.

There are actual car accidents and plane crashes behind him, but this man is set on his run and looking good while doing it. His zombie bite catches up to him and he starts to decay, his wig and “good looks” fall off in the process. Even as a zombie this man won’t give up his run, and has some zombie pals to keep up with him.

Are Short Installments of Larger Productions the Future For Gaming?

It is 2015, and the episodic release model is becoming more and more familiar to the gaming industry. Popularized by series such as The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us, games with seasons similar to a television show have become the trademark of publisher Telltale Games in particular. Now, the trend is extending to new franchises, including the Square Enix game Life is Strange.

What is an episodic video game exactly?

To define episodic video games, they are compromised of several parts that separately have a smaller duration than typical full releases. However, as a whole, the game is as lengthy as a standalone release. Additionally, the complete season of episodes is often available for a lump purchase once all the chapters have been published individually.

The types of games released in this format are often narrative-based and tell a continuous story from one episode to the next. They tend to share characters, settings, plots, and thematic elements.

While the schedule by which each episode is released varies from series to series, the period of time between episodes is usually systematic and relatively brief. Otherwise, the publisher runs the risk of players forgetting the plot or, worse, public interest having waned.

Telltale Games’ Influence

Behind the scenes of today’s fad, Telltale Games has already been publishing games in the episodic model for more than a decade.

Telltale found success using this system because they have built up trust with the community. Players feel comfortable diving into a commitment with their releases because the company has proven again and again it will follow through on its promise to deliver new episodes in a timely matter.

That doesn’t mean there isn’t anticipation between episodes in Telltale Games that follow this model. If anything, the hype is increased by the wait. For days in advance, fans guess when they will get to continue their favorite story, and upon release of a new episode, the excitement is sovereign.

Sam & Max, An Early Episodic Hit

The birth of Telltale Games Inc. arose from the episodic game series Sam & Max, which was originally developed by Lucas Arts, in the early 2000s. The Sam & Max series is beloved by many, having collected a substantial fan base through the years, and was possibly the most successful early game using an episodic business model.

Sam & Max are a pair of private detectives who get into all sorts of shenanigans by being goofy and somewhat reckless at their duties. Oh, and they’re anthropomorphic, meaning that Sam is a dog and Max seems to be something akin to a rabbit.

Today’s Most Popular Series: The Walking Dead

Recently, Telltale Games received its highest level of success with their The Walking Dead series, which has two finished seasons out for purchase and a third in active development. Each episode was released on a two-month interval.

Not your average zombie apocalypse game!

The Walking Dead follows Lee Everett, a controversial former professor, and his young companion, a little girl named Clementine, as they venture through the southern United States during a zombie apocalypse. To put it lightly, their journey is emotionally gripping.

Besides the novelty of episodic content, The Walking Dead is renowned for its reliance on player choice to determine narrative outcomes. There are many intense quick time events scattered throughout the game that drastically changes its course, and, no, you cannot revert your choices afterward; everything happens rapidly, including decision-making that will control how the player’s story ends. Sometimes it is even a life or death matter!

The inclusion of player choice opens up a discussion between fans about what decisions they made in their personal play-through and allows them to compare and contrast how things could have ended if their split second decisions were even a little different. Talking about these games amongst friends is decidedly fun.

Having sparked the empathy of millions, The Walking Dead: Season One boasts multiple 2012 Game of the Year awards and even more nominations.

Telltale Games to Look Forward To

Presently, Telltale Games is working on multiple new franchises. They partnered with HBO to create an episodic Game of Thrones game, and have an ongoing Borderlands spinoff called Tales from the Borderlands. Furthermore, there are talks of a Minecraft story-mode game and the sequel to The Wolf Among Us, which could probably be the harshest fairytale found in mass media.

More and More Episodic Games Are Becoming Available

Other recent episodic video game projects outside of Telltale Games include Life is Strange, Alan Wake, Broken Age, Resident Evil: Revelations, and The Detail.

Some expansion packs, or Downloadable Content, also resemble the episodic content business model. That is best seen in Grand Theft Auto: Episodes From Liberty City, a compilation of two pieces of Grand Theft Auto IV DLC – Grand Theft Auto: The Lost and Damned and Grand Theft Auto: The Ballad of Gay Tony.

Alan Wake and Episodic Horror

Interestingly, the previously mentioned Alan Wake has six initial episodes as well as two pieces of DLC. It is unique to the model in that, while still powered by the plot, it is a part of the survival horror genre.

The story is also a bit of a mystery; Alan Wake, its self-titled Stephen King-like protagonist, is searching desperately for his wife after she disappears during their vacation to a small town. Wake himself is an author suffering from writer’s block, until he completes a novel he does not remember writing and then experiences its events in his own real life.

As a thriller, Alan Wake benefits from the episodic format because each part offers another piece of the puzzle, eventually leading to the solution of the case. Perhaps of all the episodic games, it most obviously resembles the format of a television show with a recap sequence and musical closing credits to each installment. Overall, it received a positive critical response!

Pros and Cons of the Episodic Model

There is a deeper conversation happening about episodic video games, though; members of the gaming community are beginning to ask whether or not this business model is actually healthy for the industry. After all, at times, the monetary cost of such series can seem biased in the developers’ favor.

Because each installment is not exactly meaty, rarely lasting more than a couple hours, but still comes with a price, episodic games can be used as a tool to lure buyers into paying more for less content. This is especially true as the business model keeps costs down for developers.

Episodic video games are a product of today’s digital generation; the digital distribution method of publishing games facilitates the existence of multiple small installments in a way that would not be financially feasible with boxed products.

To some gamers, games that possess seasons in the style of television programming are off-putting, as they fear being scammed. Their apprehension is legitimate; when all is said and done, consumers can spend more on a game with numerous portions than a full standalone game.

Still, the experience one has with episodic video games is unlike any other. Episodic video games are set at a unique pace and, in many cases, encourage the formation of a particularly intimate community. For that reason, it is a style more advantageous to certain genres over others; first person shooters would be far less effective in episode form than a graphic adventure game would, for instance.

In these intimate communities, player feedback can be more easily heard, and developers can more easily improve their game based on it. There is the benefit of having time between episodes to reflect on what aspects worked and what didn’t work in the prior. The feedback loop with episodic games is vital.

Another potential plus is the way development is handled in an episodic video game series. It is worked in smaller intervals, which gives developers more focused jobs and allows their work to adjust based on the more accessible community response over time. Thus, their experience building these virtual worlds is more positive for them personally, and since extra care is placed into projects created in smaller portions, it can be more positive for consumers as well.

Regardless of whether the benefits of the episodic gaming model are too skewed in the favor of developers, it seems that they are here to stay. Some of the most popular games of the past several years utilized the model, and it has proven to be rewarding in both financial profit and uniting the gaming community!

You are literally weaponless in Amnesia: The Dark Descent, with nothing but your lantern to chase away the suffocating darkness. But be cautious as you plumb the depths of your prison and uncover its many, bloodcurdling secrets; there are things prowling the corridors seeking your blood.

Sound plays an important factor. Make too much noise while opening that door, and they will know where you are. The interplay between light and shadow is also another key feature. Stay in the darkness for too long, and your sanity drops, drawing the monsters to you; but keeping your lantern lit can also attract the attention of those same monsters. It’s a lose-lose situation, further homing you in on the reality of your hopelessness.

A surreal atmosphere thick with Lovecraftian undertones, and the feeling of total impotence in the face of implacable evil; The Dark Descent masterfully combines both elements, earning it spot #2 on our list of best scary games to play in 2015.

Enter P.T., the playable teaser for the now defunct Silent Hills.

It starts off simply enough. You’re in an empty house filled with lonely corridors. There are portraits on a table. A telephone. Normal, everyday stuff.

Then you hear the whisperings. You see the shadows taking on human shapes. And the doors that you thought were leading you nowhere? Oh, they’re leading you somewhere, all right. The question is: will you like where they take you?
