Adventure Time is a brilliant show filled with oddball lands and characters that are sure to leave you thinking “what the heck did I just watch?” What’s so wonderful is once you look beyond its wild and trippy storyline, a deeper meaning lies within each episode. Let me throw a few good ones your way.

20. Thank You (Season 3 Episode 17)

A friendly Snow Golem stumbles upon a lost Fire Wolf Pup. He brings it to his home and attempts to take it, but keeps running into problems. While he goes back and forth searching for items to aid the Flame pup, Finn and Jake have been frozen in by Ice King in the background.

This episode is easily one of the lightest and sweetest of the series. It doesn’t star Finn and Jake, but they do still appear in it. Ice King steals the boys sandwiches and has trapped them in an ice sculpture. Meanwhile, the plushy Snow Golem finds that one of the Fire Pups has jumped into his basket.

It’s a heartwarming little episode as the snowman tries everything he can to help the little guy get comfortable. Due to him being ice and the dog being fire, they both continue unintentionally hurting each other. Your heart kind of melts while watching the two contrasting characters bond.

What’s great about it too is the fact that the camera flashes to Finn and Jake trying to escape Ice Kings trap. The Golem sneaks back and forth gathering resources while trying to avoid them at all costs. In the end, the Pup is returned to his lava skinned family and Finn and Jake finally break free.

The Snow Golem is saddened while Finn and Jake escape and eat their sammies on top of Ice King. From afar they notice a Fire Wolf and Snow Golem are hugging and playing. Even though the two are supposed to hate each other, they've found peace. Finn, Jake, and Ice King contemplate this friendship and reflect on their own relationship with one another.

19. Blank-Eyed Girl (Season 7 Episode 19)

Fans know Adventure Time is dark, creepy, and disturbing at times. This “blank-eyed girl” episode really digs into the series' dark side. The boys listen to a podcast and hear that the blank-eyed girls have been spotted. Once they reach home they’ve come to find the legendary girls are spying on them.

They are downright freaky. Long black hair, white dresses, and vacant eyes begin caving in on Finn and Jake. If I were a kid I would for sure be having some major anxiety followed by nightmares. Everyone loves a good scare, and this episode is flooded with unsettling, creepy vibes.

Our heroes try to rid the girls with things like nice music, the gaze of a chicken, and even suggest they follow vampire rules and can not enter unless invited in. Each attempt proves wrong. BMO always seems to have reasonable solutions as he suggests the girls only exist because people think they do.

Finn is able to un-think of them, but Jake struggles. Watching the girls crowd all around Jake is seriously unnerving. You can quite literally feel his fear. Jake stops fighting and admits the blank-eyed ladies are freaky.

Now we get into the depth of the episode's weirdness. It's quite like something out of the exorcist as the girls eyeballs pop out and they rotate their heads until they too fall off. Their clothes fall off too to unveil a ghostly, lifeless entity with no face. It seems their haunt is over and they evaporate into the sky. This one is almost guaranteed to leave you speechless.

18. To Cut A Women’s Hair

Tree Witches should never be trusted! Deep in the forest Finn and Jake cross paths with an ugly witch. She informs the boys the only way for her to be pretty is if she covers her head in Princess hair. After the boys refuse to assist her, she quite literally sits on Jake.

The tree witch claims her butt will suck Jake up into it forever if Finn doesn’t acquire the locks of a Queen. Obviously Finn can’t lose Jake to a butt, so he sets off.

This episode is cool because we get to see numerous princesses and their kingdoms. Muscle Princess is Finn's first hope. She thinks he’s crushing on her when he asks for her hair and Finn quickly devised a plan that results in the veiny Princess punching him.

Lumpy Space Princess is his next hope, but also believes Finn is in love with her. She gets defensive, demanding he “puts a ring on it” before getting her lumps. In another failed attempt our hero ends up in a graveyard to find Princess Beautiful is merely a skeleton now with no hair.

Finally we visit Princess Bubblegum who ends up handing over a lock of her pink hair. The witch dismisses the offering stating it’s only bubblegum. Not all hope is lost as Finn reveals his luscious blonde hair from under his hat. Honestly this was exciting as we never get to see Finn without his hat.

This episode is quite a royal trip. It’s super fun to get a glance at some of the interesting Princesses that live in the kingdom. Not only that, but we get to see Finn in all his long-haired glory.

17. Ghost Princess (Season 3 Episode 24)

Ghost Princess appears in her eerie beauty in need of Finn and Jake’s help. In order to move on to the “dead world,” she must find out who murdered her. The three set off for a deadly discovery.

Adventure time does such a great job incorporating drab and gloomy settings. We get to spend a little while in a cemetery inhabited by skeletons, ghouls, and demons. As the trio search for clues of Ghost Princess’ death, they come across Clarence who the Princess finds familiar and attractive.

The audience gets to go along on the hunt and try to piece it altogether. It’s actually quite engaging as if you’re in the show helping Finn and Jake on the mission. Shockingly, Clarence turns out to be Ghost Princesses murderer and she recalls her death and disappears to the dead realm.

Now poor Clarence is doomed further into purgatory until he finds out his killer. By now we’re all angry at Clarence who claims his “life is like a fart.” The dude died by eating a whole batch of canned cheese. Now that’s a death I’m sure he doesn’t want to be remembered for.

16. Beyond this Earthly Realm (Season 4 Episode 11)

Beyond this Earthly Realm will have you questioning the power of antique objects. Finn rubs an old porcelain lamb and is frozen within it. He’s transported to the spirit world and must devise a plan to get back to reality.

Disgusting, slimy, and stinky creatures inhabit the spirit realm. Finn is able to see Jake and BMO, but they can’t see him. BMO lets out a robotic fart because apparently Finn thinks it’s funny and so do the sick viewers watching.

Ice King is Finn's only hope to get out of the spirit realm. His “wizard eye” allows him to see the realm, but the critters can’t touch him. Ice King is known for tricking the boys and informs Finn the only way back is to rid all the creatures including a freaky rolling eyeball. Whose brilliant mind is able to conjure up such unnerving entities?

It’s easy to say most have a love/hate relationship with the king, so when he gets trapped in the spirit realm as well, fans jump for joy. Eventually the two break the lamb and they’re set free. There’s just something so disgustingly satisfying about watching sloppy beasts wreck chaos.

15. Her Parents (Season 2 Episode 12)

Jake is most definitely a ladies man. With his smooth, deep voice and elastic body it’s hard to resist him. When his girlfriend Lady Rainicorns parents come to visit, Jake panics. Apparently the two species have a nasty history. What will Jake the Dog do?

He could just be himself and hope for the best, but what fun would that be? Jake disguises himself as a rainicorn and Finn agrees to be his servant. The rainicorn race is such a delight to withhold. Any episode with her in it adds a lightness to your heart.

This episode has a little bit of everything. As Jake continues his lie, Finn is forced to help him enact rainicorn-like actions such as flying and engaging in odd games. Their friendship is put to the test, but their brotherly love always wins in the end.

Dinner time rolls around and Lady’s parents are excited, thinking they’re going to feast on Finn. I’d say he’s a bit too raw, but the two insist. Heroically, Jake reveals he is a dog and protects his man friend. Sounds like it’s the end for Lady and Jake-nope!

The two confess their love for dogs and apologize for wanting to munch on Finn. Instead, the gang happily chews and swallows some soy people. Relax, it’s vegan- not real human meat!

14. All the Little People (Season 5 Episode 5)

Everyone when they were small wished their dolls and stuffed animals could come to life. Finn was granted this wish in this strange episode. When Magic Man places a sack in Finn's pants, he pours out the contents to find miniature versions of various characters in the Land of Ooo.

The thing about Adventure Time is it heavily messes with your mind. Though the episodes are full of mischief, color, and whim; they possess deep underlying messages. That’s exactly what “All the Little People” portrays.

Finn plays around with the tiny characters and essentially creates their reality. He purposefully makes mini-Jake and Lady Rainicorn breaks up, initiating a love spark between Finn and Lady. He creates weird scenarios between the mini people.

Mini-Marceline finds enjoyment in licking Peppermint Butler while mini-Turtle Princess spanks mini-Xergiox. Whoever scripts the show is a wizard of weirdness. Finn becomes obsessed with the minis and wastes weeks upon weeks essentially ruining their lives.

He gets lost in an imaginary world and forgets his duties as a human. It’s interesting to watch the minis engage with other minis they would never come across in real life. The whole episode is a time warp where Finn plays god.

Eventually Finn realizes he’s wasting his life and wrecking chaos for the poor miniature villagers. It kind of goes along with a spiritual meaning of our realities as humans and pondering on the thought of a higher being. It’s actually a lot more thought provoking than you think.

13. Incendium (Season 3 Episode 26)

Finns love life has always been a bit rocky. All his attempts at winning Princess Bubblegum's heart end in failure and heartbreak. After another rejection, Jake pledges to find another girl for Finn which leads him to the Fire Kingdom.

Everyone likes a good love story. After all, Finn is a young teenage boy so he’s bound to dabble in the art of love. Jake is too good of a friend when he journeys to the fierce Fire Kingdom to try and win over Flame Princess.

Jake puts on a beautiful concoction of chaos for the King. He utilizes his stretching ability to form “Finn” who claims he likes Flame Princess. The King only accepts this Finn form when he kills Jake. Hate to break it to you- Flame Princess is supposedly evil.

Jake was supposed to find a nice girl, but instead releases a beautiful, destructive monster. The Princess chases after Jake and sets their house on fire. We all feel Finn's pain as he’s too heartbroken to notice the fire.

Lo and behold Flame Princess is hit by liquid and passes out in Finn's arm. When she awakes she slaps him leaving a mark while Finn claims he now has a crush. This episode really caters to the emotional rollercoaster we feel when we're in love. It’s a nice change from the absurdity of the show.

12. Guardians of Sunshine (Season 2 Episode 16)

Video games are apparently too easy for our dog and boy duo. When the two complain about BMO’s games being too weak, he assures them they would meet defeat if they were literally inside the game. So, that’s exactly what Finn and Jake decide to do.

Finn and Jake trick BMO into sending them inside an amazing 3D video game. The episode is just super fun to watch because the animation is designed to replicate a video game. Our heroes quickly realize the game holds much more of a threat in real life.

As they go about the game, they lose their lives easily by falling into lava pits and getting smashed by big bosses. Bouncy Bee, Hunny Bunny, and Sleepy Sam appear much bigger and more terrifying up close versus on a screen.

The boy and dog fail to perform their combo moves and trick shots, realizing without a controller it’s near impossible. It kind of puts you on edge as if you were inside the game being defeated as well. You know when you’re a kid playing a difficult game and all you want to do is smash the console?

Jake does exactly that. He rips a hole in BMO enabling the two to escape, but also releasing the monsters. Now the game has actually become real. The bosses admit all they wanted was to get to the sunlight in the real world.

After watching Jake almost being swallowed by Sleepy Sam in reality, I’m sure no one wishes to be transported into their favorite game. Finn slays the beasts and peace is restored. BMO rightfully performs the combo move on Finn relaying his anger for their carelessness. Even heroes admit to defeat sometimes.

11. The Limit (Season 2 Episode 22)

I’m a-maze-d at how crazy and thrilling this episode is. Human-boy Finn and Jake the Dog run off to save a group of hot dog soldiers. The two arrive at a magical maze where the end promises each survivor a wish.

The heroes are put to the ultimate test where their abilities are quite literally stretched to the limit. The labyrinth makes it clear that there is “No Cheating Or You DIE.” Clever Jake proposes the idea of attaching his legs to a tree and stretching them through the maze.

Anxiety is at an all time high here as Jake’s body becomes thinner as they progress. The creators of the series honestly do so well in projecting the characters emotions onto the audience.

Watching Jake become weaker and weaker definitely sets you on edge. Finn recommends they turn back like a good friend, but the greedy hot dog warriors cheer Jake on to keep going. It’s filled with awesome traps and villains having fans question whether or not Jake will make it.

Knowing the two brave boys, they push on hoping to reach the end to have their wishes granted. At the beginning of the episode, they wish upon a star for an Ancient Psychic Tandem War Elephant. Now that’s something you only get to see once in a lifetime, so even fans are rooting for Jake to keep going at this point.

With no surprise the gang makes it to the end, but Jake is at death's door. A strange wizard Aquandrius greets them ready to grant their wishes. The Hot Dog Knights are so adorable, but highly idiotic. Two of them end up blowing up while one asks for a box. It appears there’s no way out of the horrific maze when Jake wishes for a sandwich.

You’ve got to love our heroes' stupidity sometimes. Here we get to experience the brilliant Ancient Psychic Tandem War Elephant, finally. The two mount the elephant and escape happily while leaving fans envious of their amazing new gift.

10. Simon and Marcy (Season 5 Episode 14)

Memories are such an interesting human feature. Whether they be good or bad, memories hold precious and hard times. Marceline the Vampire Queen finally fills Finn and Jake in about her and the Ice King's past.

There are numerous episodes that include Marceline and Ice Kings odd history. Marcy has always had a soft spot for Ice King, leaving Finn and Jake curious as to why. Marceline reluctantly recalls a specific memory of her and Ice King from 996 years ago.

It’s super weird to see Ice King as a human being and Marceline as a kid. The episode proves the depth and detail the producers put into creating the characters and story. Little Marcy and Simon (Ice King) seem to be the only survivors of the Great Mushroom War.

Watching Simon keep care and entertain young Marecline completely switches your perspective about him. Everyone wonders why he’s so evil and angry all the time. Well, the proof is in his crown.

As Marceline continues her recollection of the memory, we understand it’s Ice King's crown that has morphed him into a villain. The two encounter disgusting, slimy creatures and Simon's only way to protect Marcy is for him to use the crown's powers.

Whenever he places it on his head, he forgets who he and Marceline are and goes bonkers. It’s honestly quite touching for die hard fans. As much as the audience learns to dislike the Ice King, a whole new light is shed on him in Simon and Marcy.

9. Freak City (Season 1 Episode 20)

We all have a functioning human body (some more than others). Some parts are prettier than other parts, but all are very essential for living. Magic Man conjures up a spell and turns Finn the Human into Finn the Foot. His only comfort is a gang of freak body parts who share his despair.

Early on we can already see Adventure Time is going to be one heck of a show. Magic Man appears here and there throughout episodes, whisking up strange pranks on the villagers. The boys help Magic Man only for him to trick them thus turning Finn into a giant foot.

Already, everyone is cracking up and excited to see what the heck is going to happen. Jake thinks Finn “footery” is amazing and insists he’ll be better at fighting crime. This theory proves wrong when the two try to save the Rump People, but Finn is rejected by them and thrown off a bridge.

Finn and Jake then meet an unlikely gang of disassembled body parts. It’s just so bizarre you can’t help but be delighted and freaked out. Finn and the severed body parts realize they can form a strong working human vessel. It’s a bit disturbing to watch the asymmetrical body come together, but they end up defeating the Magic Man.

Once they return to their normal human selves, they realize they liked it better as anatomical forms. It’s not all about weird and impractical story lines, the show always has some morals. This episode's lesson is to never help Magic Man because he is a jerk.

8. Rainy Day Daydream (Season 1 Episode 23)

There’s nothing like a rainy day spent inside sipping warm tea and watching movies. Finn and Jake’s idea of a cozy rainy day is anything but relaxing and leisurely. When a knife storm hits and the boys are forced to stay inside, they let their imaginations run a little too wild.

Creativity and originality is one thing that Adventure Time does not fall short of. The very idea of there being a knife storm is completely out of this world. This is a fun episode that will put a whole new spin on building indoor forts and pretending the floor is lava. Jake begins imagining crazy things and they actually begin to happen in real life.

Jake’s imagination runs completely rampant as he imagines insane things that are invisible to the boy's eyes. Their mission is to reach the imagination machine to shut off Jake’s imagination and restore peace to their treehouse.

This is such a fun episode as it unlocks that childlike sense of fantasy for the audience. All sorts of obstacles stand in the way of the imagination machine. Finn must slay ghosts, poisonous fountains, trolls, and cute girls. He can’t see any of these things, but he can feel the pain that each barrier inflicts.

It will turn the gears inside your head and send you on an invisible mission of your own. Finn finally turns off the machine causing Jake to become horrible and dull without his imagination. Finn is forced to ignite his own imaginary powers to create a new machine and turn Jake’s personality back on.

Honestly this is such a wonderful episode about the power and importance of imagination. No matter how old you are, anything can be made possible if you believe in the power of it. Finn and Jake always know how to stir up excitement while creating fantastic new made up worlds.

7. The Hall of Egress (Season 7 Episode 24)

Have you ever had one of the nightmares where you’re not sure if you’re awake or asleep? Each time you try to wake up, you find yourself still trapped in the terrifying sleep cycle? This nightmare becomes a reality for Finn when he enters a strange cave with no exit.

This episode is just altogether a nightmare. The cartoon's eerie visuals and scenery pulls viewers into the show making you feel as if you were adventuring along with Finn and Jake. It’s highly anxiety- provoking as Finn finds himself trapped in a cave with no way out.

He must navigate his way through paths and doors looking for a way out. Each time he thinks he’s escaped, when he opens his eyes he’s back at the entrance of the Hall of Egress. It really messes with your head and is frustrating to watch.

Finn continues this cycle of exiting the cave only to find himself back at the entrance everytime his eyes open. Upon exiting the cave, he refuses to open his eyes in fear of being transported back to the hall. It feels like some sort of dimensional purgatory.

One night he heads out (eyes closed) assured things will never change. He drags on through thick forests until yet again he reaches the entrance of the Hall. This time, the passage is open allowing him to escape back into reality. Finally, we can let out a sigh of relief and pray to God that something like this never happens to us.

6. It Came From the Nightosphere (Season 2 Episode 1)

Marceline the Vampire Queen is cool, calm, and collected. She must have inherited these nice traits from her parents- or not. Finn accidentally releases The Lord of Evil from the dreaded Nightosphere who just so happens to be Marceline's father.

Marcy has always looked out for herself due to the absence of her parents. Here we get a little background history about Mareclines stained relationship with her dad. Also, some sick beats and tunes are belted out by the vampire queen who is also a pretty radical musician.

Finn stupidly sets Hunson Abadeer free whose only objective is to suck the souls of the citizens of Ooo. It’s pretty gruesome to watch the vampire King go around the town sinking his teeth morbidly into the villagers. It’s dark, gross, and horrendously awesome.

If you want to be highly disturbed and entertained, this episode is the winner. Finn attempts to slay Abadeer, initiating him to morph into a grotesque creature. Finn plunges his sword into the king's head causing him to scream revealing his true form. Who knew vampires had butt shaped heads with elongated mouths lined with razor sharp teeth and tentacles?

Lovers of all things sick and twisted will get a major kick out of watching this horrible transformation. Never underestimate the power of music- apparently it soothes demon vampires.

Finn plays one of Marceline's songs which calms her dad down enabling Finn to banish him back to the Nightosphere. This episode takes daddy issues to a whole new level.

5. The Lich (Season 4 Episode 26)

Adventure Time creators are brilliant in designing unsettling monsters and characters. Finn and his pal Billy link up to save all of mankind from the deceptive creature, the Lich.

Any episode where the Lich makes an appearance is bound to leave you feeling empty and hollow. Finn has a nightmare about his friend Billy and the evil Lich. He and Jake visit Billy to assure he’s alright.

This is one of the more complex episodes that involves space, time, and dimensional portals. It’s a real trip as we get to dive into the uncomprehending existence of alternate universes. Billy informs the two that they must acquire the gems from all the princesses to defeat the Lich.

They obey him and do so, but it’s quite clear Billy is acting strange. The Enchiridion is found in Billy’s bag revealing slots for the crystals to power the book and open up the Time Room ruled by Prismo.

It’s pretty neat we get to dive into a black hole and visit cool creatures such as the Cosmic Owl and Prismo. These characters play an important role in previous and upcoming episodes, so it’s pretty important to take note. Once at the Candy Kingdom, Princess Bubblegum tells the boys the Lich is Billy in disguise.

We’re sucked into a dark abyss with Finn where he comes face to face with the Lich who has ram-like horns and a skeletal face with black eyes. It’s just god awful and will leave a horrific sour feeling in your stomach.

The Lich makes for one heck of a villain and will have your heart beating with just one glance. His evil plot continues in the next episode forcing viewers to click the next button and encounter more darkness and evil.

4. Susan Strong (Season 2 Episode 18)

So how exactly did Finn really end up in this world? Where are his real people and parents? These are all questions we are plagued with from the very start. Finn is ecstatic when he comes across a tribe of humans living under the Land of Ooo.

It’s exciting to finally get a glimpse of human life forms in the show. This is only the beginning of Finn's complex origin story. He and Jake stumble upon an underground cave filled with other humans who also have animal hats placed atop their heads, much like Finn.

Finn and Jake take the leader, Susan, to the surface world and teach her the ways of life. She’s like a big woman-child, afraid of everything she encounters. It’s nice to see Finn has finally found one of his own species and he excitedly takes her to the Candy Kingdom.

Adventure Time is known for its twisted plots and schemes. Susan begins feasting on Peppermint Butler, thinking it’s alright as he is delicious. Finn scolds her, but her small brain doesn’t comprehend the message and she recruits her underground people to join in on the yummy feast.

What human doesn’t go bonkers for candy? Well, it turns out Susan and her “humans” are really mutated fish people. Poor Finn is distraught by this discovery and when asked if she’s really human, Susan scurries away.

Not all hope is lost. Jake reassures him that “we’re all wild animals” allowing Finn to ponder the fact there might still be other humans out there. It makes us question our own human/animal nature.

3. No One Can Hear You (Season 3 Episode 5)

We all enjoy our alone time. Sometimes, we become so annoyed by the hustle and bustle around us, we wish the whole world would disappear. Finn and Jake attempt to rid a stag who keeps licking residents of the Candy Kingdom. The deer ends up knocking Jake out and breaking Finn's legs- some heroes huh?

Who would’ve thought that a simple deer would be the downfall of our valiant champions. Finn awakes in the hospital confused with no sign of another life form. He finds Jake on the abandoned candy streets who is convinced the residents are planning a surprise party and are hiding.

Clearly Jake has lost his mind as he tells Finn he’s been waiting for six months. It’s super eerie and there’s this wave of impending doom that courses through you. This is no one's idea of a peaceful “alone day.”

The stag appears again and Finn follows him to a sewer where he hears the cries of the Candy folk. At this point we all want to slap the heck out of Jake. He’s got his mind set on the idea that at any moment the Candy people are going to jump out and start a party.

The empty streets are dirty and in ruins resembling something like an apocalypse. It kind of sets you on edge hoping the duo will figure out what happened. Finn flees into the sewer finding the Candy People stuck to the walls by a gooey orange substance. It’s sickening in all the best ways.

The magnificent deer is revealed as the culprit of the mysterious Candy Kingdom disappearance. An alarming look will most likely be plastered on your face when the critter stands up and removes his front hooves revealing hands. It turns out all the little guy wanted was some sweet sugar in exchange for a sour feeling in your stomach.

2. Sky Witch (Season 5 Episode 29)

Marceline and Princess Bubblegum are the definition of opposite. Marcys dark demeanor contrasts with Bubblegum's brightness. In previous episodes the two have displayed a strained yet deep sense of friendship. When Marceline comes to Bubblegum begging for her help, the princess accepts and aids her in a mission.

Adventure Time keeps its episodes fresh and fun by having the audience follow different characters. Marcy and Bubblegums history is referenced in previous episodes, but the full depth of their relationship is never clearly exhibited.

Maja the Sky Witch has taken one of Marcelines most prized possessions- Hambo. Marcy proves not to be all too evil if she cares so deeply for a silly little doll. As the two embark on their journey to Majas house, they encounter numerous traps that test their friendship.

Bubblegum quite clearly cares for Marcy as the two travel through thick deadly forests and engage in battle with the Sky Witches sidekick. The two get separated when Marcy flies through an opening of trees leaving Bubblegum behind. The princess can easily retreat and forget the mission, but she knows how much Hambo means to Marceline.

Majas house is discovered by the princess and quickly she learns how the dolls sentimental meaning holds value to the witches dark magic. Bubblegum offers to trade her rock shirt that Marceline gifted her years ago. It’s an act of true love and friendship and goes to show how the girls' friendship is more powerful than they think.

Maja happily takes the shirt. Apparently it’s much fresher and more loved than the doll, making its power stronger. This episode speaks a little more on the two girls' history and friendship. Would you battle an evil witch and face perilous enemies to help a friend?

Helpers (Season 8 Episode 26)

Helpers is the seventh part of Adventure Times miniseries called Islands. As the show progresses Finn digs deeper into his past which guides him closer to his human origin. Finn finally meets his mother on Founders Island revealing a much different society and way of life.

Finn, Jake, BMO, and Kara land on Founders Island where human civilization prevails. Finn spots his mom, Minerva, and excitedly approaches her only to realize there are more than one “Minervas”. This episode takes a peek into a more political based world sort of mimicking today’s society.

Jake begins contorting his body which freaks the residents out and they are both tranquilized by a group of Minervas. The futuristic and stale depiction of this human society is a complete flip from the crazy Land of Ooo. They both awake in a cell where a blood sample is taken from Finn.

The Minerva bots are shocked to find he is indeed Minerva's real son, Finn Mertens.” At this point we’re hanging on our chairs to try and figure out what happened to his real mother. A giant screen activates revealing Finn's mom.

This is a bit trippy as to how much it syncs with our own human reality. She explains how the disappearance of Finn and his dad devastated her. With Minerva's assistance, Dr. Gross set Kara out to find them only to fail. Dr Gross accidentally released a nasty virus that wiped out 62% of the human population.

To save her people’s existence, she uploaded her brain making her an artificial intelligence. Minerva explains how she could control hundreds of helper robots to help her people revive from the virus. Looking at this episode in today’s world, this idea of AI control is heavily being pushed upon.

Minerva made a huge decision in favor of her people which speaks a lot to Finn's bravery and “helping” skills. At the end of the episode, his mom makes a remark about how she wants Finn to stay “for the rest of your life.” Though the Island bustles with busy streets and specifies of his own kind, you can tell he’s distressed and freaked out by the whole situation.

Fantasy TV has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years. What's the best out there right now?

In this day and age where it’s easy to stream anything, from anywhere, at any time, binging TV shows has become a common occurrence for everyone. I mean Netflix has asked all of us at least once if we’re still watching, right?!

Here, I'm going to try to list mostly “High Fantasy” shows but considering how popular fantasy has become recently, there are surprisingly few so there may be some crossover with “low fantasy” as long as it contains elements of high fantasy that we know and love.

So without further hesitation, whether you just fancy a change of genre or need an escape from reality for a while, this list will help you find your next TV series to get lost in

15. The Legend of the Seeker

The Legend of the Seeker Season 1 Trailer

Based loosely on the Sword of Truth novels by Terry Goodkind, the show tells the story of Richard Cypher and his companions as they set out on a quest to stop Darken Rahl after he invades the Midlands.

The show wasn’t particularly well-received by critics but took much more of a hold with fantasy fans. Whilst only running for two seasons before its cancellation, if you want a high fantasy fix this should scratch that itch.

14. Xena: Warrior Princess

The series follows Xena on her quest to redeem herself from her dark and dangerous past by using her abilities as a warrior to help people. Along the way, she makes friends and enemies whilst visiting locations from Ancient Rome and Greece, to more mythical places that are portrayed with the same level of realism.

I will confess, I’ve never sat and watched every episode of this show. In fact, it’s better to say I’ve just caught the odd one over the years. The production and SFX are very typical of that from the mid-’90s and during this age of big-budget, high production TV shows it doesn’t really stand up. But you can’t deny the cult following this show gained or its right to be placed on this list.

13. The Shannara Chronicles

The Shannara Chronicles Season 1

Based on The Sword of Shannara books by Terry Brooks, the show follows the adventures of Wil, Amberle and Eretria as they go on a quest to protect the ancient tree Ellcrys from dying, and in doing so stopping the demons locked in The Forbidding from returning to The Four Lands.

Originally picked up by MTV, the show is aimed at a more YA audience which means it has more than its fair share of romance and cheesy lines. Get through the first few episodes though and you’ll find something more entertaining under the surface.

12. Cursed

Another version of the Arthurian legend on the small screen

Based (very) loosely on Arthurian legend, Cursed is a Netflix original that does its best to give you that fantasy TV fix even if it doesn’t always hit the mark. Some minor plot points that don’t make much sense can’t mar the overall production value and art design which is pretty solid as are the well-choreographed action sequences. There’s enough here that may not make you want to binge-watch, but certainly, be interested enough to watch the next episode when you can.

11. Merlin

A family-friendly take on Arthurian legend.

Another loose retelling of Arthurian legend, this BBC TV show follows a young Merlin who has been sent to Camelot by his mother and becomes a manservant to young Prince Arthur. Merlin must learn to harness his powers to protect Arthur and influence him to become the King he is destined to be, all whilst hiding his powers as magic has been outlawed by Arthur's father, King Uther Pendragon.

Originally airing to mixed reviews, the perfect mix of cheesy and entertaining storylines led to greater success as the show went on and became the most-watched show on BBC Iplayer. It was nominated for several awards and became a global success, becoming a mainstay on Netflix in both the UK and the US.

10. Once Upon a Time

A fresh take on Fairy Tale narrative

Once Upon a Time is a fantasy drama that takes place in two settings: a fantasy world where fairy tales happen and the fictional Maine seaside town of Storybrooke. The inhabitants in the town are all fairy tale characters who have been transported and had their memories wiped by the Evil Queen Regina. Their only hope is Emma, the Saviour, the only person who can break the curse.

The show ran for seven seasons from 2011 - 2018 to both critical and fan positivity and through its run was nominated for and won numerous awards. Originally looking at adapting the comic Fables into a TV show, this idea was eventually dropped and replaced by the network with Once Upon a Time and the influences are easy to see.

9. Disenchantment

Fantasy mayhem from the mind behind The Simpsons

From the creators of The Simpsons and Futurama comes Disenchantment, a Netflix original set in the Kingdom of Dreamland. It follows the misadventures of Bean, an irresponsible and alcoholic Princess, her Elf companion Elfo and her own personal demon Luci.

Disenchantment is a lot of fun to watch and whilst it doesn’t provide much depth initially, the second and third parts of the show become more focused and take us to more varied and interesting locations as well as dealing with some darker and heavier themes along the way.

8. Castlevania

Stylish and gory anime based on the critically acclaimed video game series.

Count Dracula summons an army of demons and declares all the people of Wallachia will pay with their lives after his wife is burned at the stake as a witch, causing the inhabitants to live in fear. Trevor Belmont, aided by Sypha Belnades and Dracula’s dhampir son Alucard, takes up arms against Dracula’s forces.

More of a fantasy horror than high fantasy, it does have fantastical elements which earn it a place on this list. Castlevania has received positive reviews for each of its three seasons also becoming one of the most successful original animated shows in Netflix history. Not to be watched by the faint of heart, this violent and gruesome anime is a thoroughly enjoyable watch.

7. Carnival Row

Carnival Row was a huge hit for Amazon

Carnival Row gives us a story about fantastical creatures that have fled their homeland due to a great war that is being raged between two human armies. This results in high simmering racial tension amongst the citizens of the city. Against this backdrop are unsolved murders, power struggles and a frowned upon love.

This is one of those shows that gets your attention from the first and holds it through the various plot lines that weave their way through this show. The racial inequalities are tastefully handled and the story is compelling in a way that keeps the episodes flowing. The visual effects and the acting are all superb making it easy to see why it was instantly renewed for a second season.

6. The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance

Yet another masterpiece from the Jim Henson Company

Rian, Deet and Brea are three Gelflings who must go on a quest to unite the Gelfling clans against the Skeksis to save the planet Thra from a blight known as The Darkening.

Despite being cancelled after just one season, Dark Crystal was met with widespread critical acclaim. The show is visually stunning and with the Jim Henson company having made everything, the practical effects look fantastic. This is a fantasy classic and a masterwork in puppetry.

5. Attack on Titan

Adapted from the manga of the same name, this dark fantasy anime follows the epic story of Eren Jaeger after his world comes crashing down when a titan, a giant man-eating humanoid, smashes through the walls of his protected city. Vowing revenge and to rid the world of titans, he and his friends join an elite group of soldiers fighting against the Titans.

Loved by fans and critics alike, this critically acclaimed anime is beautifully illustrated and is absolutely brutal. While not technically high fantasy, these giants are a terror to behold every time they’re on screen. The action hits hard and the personal relationships between the characters are difficult not to care about.

4. His Dark Materials

This stunning BBC adaptation brings the fantasy classic to the small screen.

His Dark Materials follows the story of Lyra Belacqua as she embarks on an epic journey to find her Uncle, Lord Asriel, who has been experimenting with a substance called Dust and to stop the disappearances of children.

Based on the classic fantasy book series of the same name, His Dark Materials is an absolute joy to watch. The production value is high and the SFX are of incredible quality. Seeing Iorek brought to the big screen yet again was a personal highlight. The cast is star-studded and the acting is brilliant throughout. Renewed for a third season and winner of multiple awards, this is a show not to be missed.

3. Adventure Time

Adventure Time in all its insane glory

Following the assorted adventures of Finn and his best friend Jake, Adventure Time is an animated fantasy tv show that is as weird as it is wonderful. This is a fantasy TV show like no other with a whole host of unforgettable characters.

While some may find this a controversial pick, it’s hard to deny the impact Adventure Time has had on the industry, on popular culture and even academic interest in its portrayal of gender roles and stereotypes This is an iconic show that draws huge inspiration from Dungeons & Dragons as well as video games. Adventure Time has a fandom that will be around for years to come and is well-deserving of its numerous awards and accolades.

2. The Witcher

The best selling novels finally come to TV

Based on the best selling book series, The Witcher follows the exploits of Geralt of Rivia, a mutant, professional monster hunter and Witcher as he finds himself embroiled in war and prophecy as well as his various misadventures along the way.

Another Netflix original, The Witcher fills that High Fantasy hole in your viewing schedule. The Witcher was beautifully shot with set and costume designs that don’t spoil the immersion at all. Staying relatively faithful to the first book in the series, The Last Wish, the show appealed to fans and critics alike. The fight scenes are well choreographed and Henry Cavill, a fan of The Witcher universe himself, is the ideal choice to play the stoic and sarcastic monster hunter.

The book series that spawned a cultural phenomon

Let’s face it, despite the ending, there was no way that this wasn’t going to be number one on this list. This is the big one. The cultural phenomenon that brought fantasy TV to the masses and changed the face of popular culture forever. Primarily following the members of the Stark family, it takes us through the trials and emotional turmoil they face through death, destruction, warfare and the resurgence of an ancient enemy.

Winner of multiple awards, one of the largest franchises in history will forever be a timeless classic at the forefront of fantasy TV and there will never be a bad time to get invested.

So there we have it, the top 15 best fantasy tv series of all time. Whether you agree or disagree, each of these has left its mark in some small way and appealed to its respective fandom. And there really is no better time to be a fan of fantasy television, with Amazon adapting and releasing TV series of both The Lord of the Rings and The Wheel of Time, both classic fantasy franchises in their own right, there is a very real chance that this number one spot could be changed not just once, but twice. That’s not even taking into account The Poppy War adaptation that’s due to happen and Brian Mclellan’s Powder Mage adaptation as well as the long-awaited and much hoped for Kingkiller Chronicles TV show.

[Top 10] Cartoons Like Gravity Falls

Looking for more Mystery and Adventure cartoons to binge?

Who doesn’t miss the Mystery twins Dipper and Mable? I definitely do! It’s sad that such a great cartoon that both kids and adults can enjoy only ran for about 2 seasons. But for some reason those 40 episodes told a great coming-of-age story that involves adventure, mystery and family. The show ended because it was meant to, not because it got low ratings or needed to be cancelled.

Still, that doesn’t stop fans from wanting more. We probably won’t be getting a season 3 of Gravity Falls, but here are some great cartoons you can binge that are similar to the cartoon.

10. Martin Mystery

Is a French Italian Canadian Animated Series based off a comic of the same name. The comic follows 4 agents of “The Center”: Martin Mystery, Diana Lombard, Billy and Java. This 4-man team investigates and solves paranormal activity that could possibly endanger the earth. While Martin may be smart when it comes to the supernatural, his ego and clumsiness would occasionally sabotage the smoothness of a mission.

This show is a little bit older than Gravity Falls, but nonetheless entertaining. Just based on its name we can already tell there’s going to be a bunch of paranormal activity involved. While not “exactly” like Gravity Falls it does have similar themes of mystery and family, just told in a different way. The show only lasted 3 seasons and was presumably cancelled due to low ratings—but don’t let those ratings discourage you from giving it out a try. It’s still a pretty solid show overall.

9. Amphibia

Anne Boonchuy, a 13-year-old Thai-American Girl stole the Calamity Box for her friends Sasha Waybright and Macy Wu on her birthday. The box teleported her along with her friends to the strange world of Amphibia. Anne gets separated from her friends and meets Sprig Plantar. The two of them form a team seeking adventure and exploring more of Amphibia. Together with Sprig and the rest of the Plantar Family, Anne tries to learn more about this new world, find her missing friends, and find a way home.

While Dipper and Mable have the mysteries of the journal to worry about, Anne has the Calamity Box as her top 1 thing to solve in the strange world she somehow got teleported in. In terms of storytelling, you’ll see similarities with Gravity Falls, especially when it comes to the humor and adventure aspect of the series. In fact, there is even one episode that plays homage to Gravity Falls. An episode called the “Wax Museum” shows the Planter family travel to a museum that resembles the Mystery Shack. The Curator of the museum is also voiced by Alex Hirsch who—you guessed it! Is not only the creator of Gravity Falls, but also the voice actor of our beloved Grunkle Stan.

8. Phineas and Ferb

The series follows two step brothers: Phineas Flynn and Ferb Fletcher, who live in the city of Danville. During their summer break they are bored and constantly looking for ways to occupy their time. Their summer activities include turning their backyard into a theme park or building something highly complex and dangerous. This causes their older sister Candice to constantly try to bust her brothers—however, her brothers’ inventions miraculously manage to disappear everytime she tries to do so.

Strange things happening and kids having a blast during the summer? That’s Gravity Falls and Phineas and Ferb. While not exactly similar, they do happen when the kids are most free: during summer and without the supervision of their parents. Let’s not forget their respective mascots, Waddles the pig and Perry the platypus. However, Perry seems to have his own big adventures as Agent P behind the scenes.

7. Star Vs. The Forces of Evil

This cartoon is an American animated Magical Girl series featuring Star Butterfly, a princess from the Mewni dimension. On her 14th birthday she is given her family’s wand but accidentally sets the castle on fire. Her parents then decide to send her to Earth and continue her magical training there as a foreign exchange student. She befriends Marco Diaz and lives with him and his family in Los Angeles and now attends Echo Creek Academy. Star and Marco now deal with everyday school life while making sure Star’s wand will not fall into the wrong hands.

Star is basically Mabel as a Magical Girl. So, if you’re hoping to fill the void Gravity Falls’ Mabel has left behind, then Star Butterfly might be the next best girl you can find. Star Vs. The Forces of Evil is a lot less serious than Gravity Falls (especially season 1) but it does get better and the plot does thicken as we enter season 2. There are also a bunch of Gravity Falls easter eggs thrown here and there as you go along the series. See if you can spot them all!

6. Adventure Time

Adventure Time is an American Animated TV series about a human boy named Finn and his magical shape-shifting dog named Jake. They live and have several adventures in the Land of Ooo. While the land is on earth, earth itself was destroyed 1000 years prior to the beginning of the series due to the events of the Great Mushroom War, leaving civilization wiped out and other objects and beings were mutated. Finn is the only known human being in the beginning of the series.

Most of the time you’d see Gravity Falls and Adventure Time neck and neck when it comes to ratings. These two are basically the most influential cartoons of its time. While the plot of Adventure Time takes time to flesh out as compared to Gravity Falls, the former still has a pretty good story to tell and all the supporting characters make the show worthwhile. If you’ve been a die-hard Gravity Falls fan for a while, it might be time to let go of old rivalry and give Adventure Time a shot.

5. Steven Universe

In an ancient beachside temple in Beach City, Delmarva, the Crystal Gems live there and protect humanity from different monsters and other threats. The Gems are ageless alien warriors who project humanoid forms from their gemstones. These are the Crystal Gems: Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl—included in this pack is an odd ball by the name of Steven, who is half-human and half gem-boy. Steven Inherited his powers and stone from his mother, Rose Quartz who was the former leader of the Crystal Gems. Steven’s days are spent exploring his abilities with the other gems and other human companions. While not as powerful or as smart as the other Crystal Gems, Steven still manages to save the world…somehow.

While lacking in the mystery aspect that Gravity Falls has, Steven Universe is still similar to the show when it comes to exploring the relationships of each of the characters. How they highlight the importance of friendship and family is shown as each of the characters grow in the series. In a way, it’s a coming-of-age story. If you’re also looking for modern cartoons with good music—Steven Universe has some pretty catchy in-show music to get into.

4. Spirited Away

Chihiro along with her folks are travelling to their new home, while her parents are ecstatic with the new life ahead, Chihiro does not share the same sentiments. Along the way they stumble upon an “abandoned’ amusement park, and the family decide to do some exploring. When night comes upon them, Chihiro’s parents turn into pigs. Chihiro managed to get saved by a boy named Haku. Haku tells Chihiro to go to the bathhouse and ask for a job so she can stay in this world and find a way to break her parents’ curse.

While most people are probably expecting more western style cartoons in this list, I thought of adding a Japanese one. Gravity Falls and Spirited Away are both shows that talk about growing up, accepting changes, and the importance of friends. Chihiro is shown to hold a special love for her parents as well as all the friends she has made in her journey. She learns to be brave and appreciates her parents more by the end of the movie. The same can be said for Dipper and Mabel. It took an adventure on a fateful summer for them to grow their bonds as siblings as well as learn more about their Grunkle Stan. Through the mysteries of Gravity Falls they learn to understand the other supporting characters.

Also, as an added bonus a creature in Gravity Falls, The Summerween Trickster is the show’s way to pay homage to No Face from Spirited Away.

3. The Owl’s House

A teenage human girl named Luz Noceda while on her way to a juvenile summer detention camp, accidentally stumbles upon a portal that leads her to another world. She arrives in a strange land called the Boiling Isles and meets the Owl Lady, Eda Clawthorne and her demon companion King. Luz, having no magical ability, decides her new goal in life is to become a witch by becoming Eda’s apprentice.

Introducing Gravity Falls' younger cousin—The Owl's House! Aside from it belonging to the same network, the show is also produced by Dana Terrace who was a storyboard artist for Gravity Falls. While they share the same animation style the series also tackles important family matters and themes of growing-up and finding yourself. Of course, in Luz’s case her Owl House family are not really blood relatives—that just goes to show that we can share familial bonds literally anywhere, even in an alternate dimension.

2. Over the Garden Wall

In a strange forest called the Unknown, two half-brothers ended up lost and are now attempting to make their way home. Occasionally they will receive help from an elderly Woodsman and a bluebird named Beatrice. The bird tells the boys that she is also searching for someone who can supposedly help the boys find their way home. While they try to navigate through the forest there is a beast constantly on their tails that is rumored to lead lost souls astray till they eventually lose hope and turn into Edelwood trees.

Another great show that ended in its own terms and not because it was cancelled. The two-share similar main cast characters. Dipper and Writ are both awkward and a little too careful and more concerned about solving the mystery of their own respective area. Meanwhile, we have Mabel and Greg being excitable, positive and carefree siblings with their strange choice of animal companions. Maybe it’s because the shows’ respective creators were part of the same class in California Institute of the Arts?

1.Duck Tales (2017)

Scrooge McDuck is reunited with Donald Duck after not speaking to the latter for over 10 years. Donald, along with his three nephews Heuy, Dewey and Louie move-in to the McDuck Manor. This new change reignited Scrooge’s thirst for adventure. Now Scrooge leads the pack for several treasure hunting expeditions along with the nephew’s new friend Webby.

In my opinion, the Duck Tales reboot is Disney’s attempt to extend Gravity Falls without it being Gravity Falls. I could be wrong and the similarity might just be due the fact several of the staff of Gravity Falls have also worked with Duck Tales or it could even be the other way around. Duck Tales is an older show that started in 1987 and could just be picking up from the old series. So, it could be that Gravity Falls is the one that drew inspiration from the original show. Either way, I feel both shows are worth the watch if you love mystery and adventure. Watching Webby who is a weird combo of the twins has been a great treat during my initial run of the show.

[Top 10] Best Comic Books For Kids

Because comic books are fantastic, but not always super appropriate. Comics like Watchmen, Y the Last Man, and The Walking Dead are iconic, but I wouldn’t give any of those books to anyone under the age of 14 or 15.

With that being said, there are a ton of brilliant comics that are made with kids in mind. If you’re considering getting your kid into a series of comics, might I suggest:

10. Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur

What a sweet dino, not eating that kid.

Lunella Lafayette is a super-genius who’s trapped in a standard school that can’t seem to keep up with her. To make matters worse, she also has Inhuman genes that she knows will radically change her in the near future if she doesn’t do something to stop them. It’s in this pursuit for a cure that she accidentally calls up a ferocious dinosaur from the past and drops it into modern-day New York City.

Fortunately, though, she seems to be able to communicate with the dinosaur and builds something of a relationship with it. In a world where Lunella doesn’t fit in, a devil dinosaur may be the best, and only, friend she has.

You should read this series if you:

Are looking for a story with newer characters
Want a comic with an unlikely partnership
Enjoy stories with fantastical elements
Would like to see a T-Rex act like a lost dog

9. Bone

Nothing weird behind you, Fone. Just keep going!

Bone is a comic series that feels like an up-to-date Sunday newspaper comic strip in both its art and writing.

The three Bone cousins, Fone, Phoney, and Smiley, are chased out of their hometown of Boneville after Phoney loses the election for mayor (due to some very shady business deals). After traveling across the desert, the cousins are separated, and the comic begins to primarily follow Fone.

Eventually, Fone finds a lush valley in the desert, filled with a variety of strange creatures. His cousins end up in the valley as well, and the three of them work to survive in their new environment. It’s an enjoyable story with humor for readers of all ages to enjoy.

You should pick this up if you:

Are looking for a story that focuses heavily on humor
Prefer a cartoony art style
Like seeing regular-ish people in fantastical settings
Want to know why Netflix decided to make a series about this

8. Batman: Li’l Gotham

Aw, aren't all of those super-criminals cute when they're drawn that way. Sure, have my wallet, little Penguin!

Damian Wayne takes things very seriously. Like, all the time. Being raised by the League of Assassins and then having Batman as a dad can do that to a kid.

You know it’s gotten bad when your childhood idea of a good time was fighting zombies that your grandfather created by throwing bodies into the Lazarus Pit.

But the Bat-family, even Batman himself, realizes that Damian needs to learn to enjoy some things in life. So, they come together as a family in this comic book series to show Damian various holidays in Gotham and how much joy those days can bring. Damian not only learns about how much these holidays mean to the general public and the citizens that he helps to protect but also how much his own family can enjoy them.

Pick this comic up if you:

Enjoy non-traditional art styles
Want stories that explore a variety of holidays
Are looking for an enjoyable family-based story
Think Damian Wayne should lighten up a little

7. Superman for all Seasons

With a jawline like that, he must be a hero!

Most people are pretty familiar with Superman, but this comic approaches the man of steel from another angle. It’s very much a look at the start of Superman’s career as a crimefighter, starting with the Kents revealing that they found him as a child and Clark learning more about his powers before heading off to Metropolis. Once there, he meets Louis Lane, gets a job at the daily planet, saves people, and does all of the expected Superman stuff.

What’s interesting about this comic is the way the story is told, as it swaps between the point of view of several in-story characters that aren’t Superman. It starts with Jonathan Kent in the Spring, Louis Lane in the Summer, Lex Luther in the Fall, and the Lana Lang in the Winter. Each one brings their own perspective on the character, and the different ideas about him from each narrator are well-written.

Ultimately, it’s a coming-of-age story for Clark Kent as he becomes the hero that the DC universe knows and loves. It’s enjoyable, it’s different, and it can really be appreciated by both kids and adults.

You should pick up this comic if you:

Want a mostly innocent story with some real depth
Would like a story written from a few different points of view
Want a smaller-scope Superman story where he doesn’t lift the Earth or something

6. Ms. Marvel

Don't think for a second that she would punch you with a hand that small. It's gotta get big first.

Kamala Khan is a Pakistani-American girl from New Jersey who loves the Avengers, particularly Captain Marvel. In Kamala’s eyes, Captain Marvel can save everyone with a smile and look very good while doing it.

One night, after uncharacteristically sneaking out to go to a party, Kamala is engulfed in a strange mist, which gives the power to shapeshift! She can grow or shrink her body parts, and she can look like other people. However, she quickly learns that having super-powers isn’t all fun and games, and it’s not as easy as the heroes make it look.

As she figures out what to do and who she wants to be, she reflects on her own powers and ideals, falling back on one of her father’s favorite quotes, “whoever saves one person, it is as if he has saved all of mankind”. With that, Kamala decides to put on a costume and save people as the new Ms. Marvel!

Pick up this comic book series if you:

5. Adventure Time

The art alone is just wildly kid-friendly. Awesome to the max, but kid-friendly.

What time is it? Adventure Time!

A comic book spin-off of the popular show of the same name, the Adventure Time comics follow Jake the Dog and Finn the Human through many of their crazy adventures. Some adventures can be solved with a sword or item of power, while others require less traditional means, such as knowledge or compassion. Or sick battle-burns.

The stories aren’t always too deep, but they’re consistently enjoyable. The action is compelling and well-drawn, and the characters feel accurate to their television counterparts. Each comic contains its main story, but will also often include a small, unconnected side story.

You should pick some of these comics up if you:

Were a fan of the show
Are hunting for a pretty silly comic
Want a comic with a fair amount of action, but not a ton of actual violence
Like art where a dog stretches into weird shapes

4. Amulet

I know the imagery seems creepy, but in my defense, it is a Scholastic book. They make their own rules.

After their father dies in a car accident, Emily and Navin are brought to an old family home by their now-widowed mother, Karen, to clean the place up. While cleaning and exploring, Emily finds an ancient amulet that used to belong to her grandfather and, like any kid, tries it on.

At first, nothing seems amiss. Later that night, however, Karen is kidnapped by an arachnid monster, and Emily is introduced to a world full of creatures and monsters. It’s in this world learns that, if she accepts the power of the amulet, she can become a Stonekeeper.

Together with Navin, Emily must use her newfound powers to rescue her mother and survive this world, making both friends and enemies along the way.

It’s a good and compelling story for all ages. I’ve also only seen it in graphic novel form, so you wouldn’t be able to buy a single issue of the comic, but it’s very much worth the investment. While it doesn’t reinvent the wheel for the fantasy genre, it does use the ideas and setting very well.

Would like a story with relatable characters and emotion
Want a book that can probably make you cry

3. Lumberjanes

There's the calm before the storm, and there's the group photo before the rad stuff happens.

Jo, Molly, Mal, Ripley, and April are Lumberjanes (similar to girl scouts) who are spending a week at a summer camp in the woods. There are several normal camp activities planned, like hiking and canoeing, but things aren’t all that normal at Miss Qiunzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet's Camp for Hardcore Lady Types. The camp’s activities are frequently interrupted by strange creatures and events that probably aren’t approved by any camp officials.

Luckily, our main characters come together and use their unique knowledge and skills to overcome these challenges. Whether they’re deciphering anagrams, tricking Yetis, or following a path that requires knowledge of the Fibonacci sequence, the Lumberjanes work together to solve the mysteries in this strange forest. Friendship to the max!

2. Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Promise

You know the characters in the background are mentors because they have beards and angry eyebrows.

Nickelodeon’s show “Avatar: The Last Airbender” took the world by storm when it came out, but, like any good production, it left audiences wanting more. There were unanswered questions, and people wanted to spend more time with these characters, and in this setting.

Well, there’s some good news! This comic book series explores what happens immediately after the end of the show. Unlike many TV show tie-in comics, this one follows a singular plot rather than showcasing smaller, unconnected stories.

While there are several excellent ideas here, all of which are expertly executed, it boils down to a few key points. Chief among them is an impending war based on whether or not the Fire Nation’s colonies in the Earth Nation should remain, with compelling arguments on both sides. A subplot that isn’t addressed as much, but is vital to fans, is Zuko’s search for his mom.

It’s a great continuation of the show, with an excellent balance of humor and serious topics. There’s a lot for kids to enjoy, and a lot for the adults too.

1. The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl

I love how each volume takes a phrase with the word "Girl" and replaces it with "Squirrel". Squirrel Power, indeed.

Doreen Green has built something of a reputation fighting crime as the one and only Squirrel Girl, and now she’s heading off to college! After spending years living in the attic of the Avenger’s Mansion, she’s going to attend NYU and earn her bachelor’s degree in computer science.

However, New York city is wrought with criminals and villains, so Doreen can’t quit being Squirrel Girl while she pursues her education. She needs to find a balance between her studies, her friends, and her heroic activities. It will take all the powers of both a squirrel and a girl to make it work, but if anyone can do it, it’s the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl.

Would like a comic with some cool lessons (like how to count to thirty-one on a single hand)
