10 Superhero Movies You Must Watch

Remember when ‘superhero’ wasn’t an entire genre?

I’m struggling to.

Superheroes have been on-screen since the early days of cinema. Batman, Superman, Captain America and Captain Marvel (the Shazam version, not Marvel’s female one) all featured in serials in the 40s.

1966 gave us the campy Batman: The Movie, and Superman and its sequels dominated the 80s. It wasn’t until X-Men in 2000 and Spider-Man in 2002 that comic book adaptations really started gathering pace though. Since then, we’ve seen Marvel Comics open their own film studios, purely to produce their own comic conversions. DC of course, are hot on their tail, launching the DC movie universe, beginning with Man of Steel (2013).

An enormous amount of heroes and villains, down to the relatively obscure, have been covered in an extremely short amount of time, and we’ve still only scratched the surface. Out of all these adventures I’ve narrowed down the 10 that are an absolute must-see.

10) Spider-Man (2002)

Wolverine was scripted to make a cameo but the Spider-Man crew couldn’t get hold of his outfit from X-Men (2000).

A modern classic, and arguably the best live-action representation of Spider-Man ever.

Depicting the origin of Spider-Man and his nemesis the Green Goblin, Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man was a box office smash. The concept sat in development hell for decades, but when eventually released, it was the first film to land $100m in its opening weekend.

Spawning sequels that featured villains Dr. Octopus, Venom, the Sandman, and the second Green Goblin, Tobey Maguire’s portrayal of Peter Parker remains the definitive on-screen Spider-Man. Andrew Garfield took over the role for The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), but both were poorly received. Tom Holland has since been re-introduced as a young Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War, but much is left to prove.

9) Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

The words “I am Groot” were recorded over a thousand times by voice actor Vin Diesel.

Its funny, quirky, and it came out of nowhere - Guardians was an unexpected instant classic.

I’ll happily admit to knowing next-to-nothing about the comic version of the Guardians before the film came out. I don’t think many who saw it did. However, James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy was an underdog hit, with a witty cast and an awesome soundtrack. Properties like Superman, Batman, Spider-Man and The Incredible Hulk bring a whole load of baggage with them. Certain accepted canon is expected to be retained, and you’re likely to be criticized for going too dark with the tone, or conversely, too family-friendly.

For Guardians, relative obscurity was an advantage. The grand majority of viewers entered the cinema with no idea what to expect. What they received, was a superhero movie deeply entangled with Marvel lore, yet with no requirement to take itself as seriously as The Avengers. This movie doesn’t need to justify why aliens, or magic, or super-powered humans, are roaming the streets of real cities. It simply focuses on being amusing, touching and relatable. The colourful and extra-terrestrial subject matter is all window dressing, for a great story about a team of misfits.

8) Batman: Under the Red Hood (2010)

The Red Hood is a disguise utilized several times throughout Gotham City’s history by various criminals. Most famously it was used by The Joker, which is why the murdered and reborn Robin decides to adopt it.

Our only animated entrant, Under the Red Hood managed to knock the long-acclaimed Batman & Mr. Freeze: Sub-Zero off the Rotten Tomatoes top-spot.

Sub-Zero had been the most beloved and respected Batman animated feature since it was released in 1998. That may sound like quite a niche accolade, but Mystery of the Batwoman, Return of the Joker, The Dark Knight Returns, Gotham Knight, Batman vs. Robin and Year One (all animated) beat out every single live-action adaptation of Batman on Rotten Tomatoes. The exception being The Dark Knight, but several even beat that.

The grand prize goes to Under the Red Hood with one-hundred-freakin’-percent though. That beats every Star Wars too.

The plot is centred on the resurrection of Jason Todd, the second Robin who was murdered by The Joker. Returning to Gotham as the ‘Red Hood’ he slaughters criminals before Batman can arrest them, and takes the fight to his former mentor. A heart-breaking tale of a father figure, the proxy son he failed, and a complete madman, that pushes Batman to the absolute limits of his moral code.

7) The Avengers (2012)

Mark Ruffalo was considered for Bruce Banner in The Incredible Hulk (2008) before Edward Norton took the role, only to pull out of a follow-up. Ruffalo would eventually become the jolly green giant after all in The Avengers (2012).

The long-awaited alliance of Marvel’s finest was a box office juggernaut.

You can’t fault Marvel for playing the long game with Avengers. It was way back in 2008’s Iron Man that Samuel L. Jackson first appeared in the end-credits and spoke of the ‘Avengers initiative’.

Back in the days of Blade, X-Men and Hulk, a project like The Avengers seemed a distant dream, and, I suppose, it did take another decade. This film was the pay-off from four years of end-credit vignettes featuring Sam Jackson as S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury, gathering the best and brightest in Marvel-land for the defence of the planet. Avengers marked a new dawn for superheroes on screen. Credit for the modern surge in comic-converted movies also lies in the lap of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy, and Sony and FOX’s Marvel-based efforts. The Avengers, though, was built for Marvel, by Marvel, and truly made “superhero” a genre in and of itself.

6) Justice League (2017)

The elephant in the room continues to be “who – and where – is the Green Lantern?”

I know it’s not out yet, but I’m convinced it’s gonna be great.

So, the DCEU has been a bit of a slow-starter. Man of Steel was okay, Dawn of Justice was good but probably didn’t meet the hype, and Suicide Squad was a lot of fun, but struggled in it’s organisation. My glass, however, remains very much half-full. Despite not being out-of-the-park home runs, everything DC has presented so far has been at least good. Faith in Batfleck is growing, the Wonder Woman trailers look great, GOT’s Jason Momoa is hauling Aquaman out of Family Guy cut-scene hell, and on-set insiders suggest The Flash and Cyborg have a good chemistry.

The DCEU takes a lot of flak from critics, but count the Marvel mediocrities when they were at this stage of the game. We still don’t know who the Green Lantern is, or even what version of Lantern it will be, but if he isn’t at least hinted at in Justice League, I’ll be shocked.

5) X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)

Evan Peters (American Horror Story) played Magneto’s son Quicksilver in Days of Future Past, but the character would be used again, with a different actor, and alongside his sister Scarlet Witch, in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015). Magneto’s children are within a small handful of characters that both 20th Century FOX, and Marvel Studios, have the right to use.

The best of a good bunch.

The most lucrative X-Men movie until Deadpool swaggered onto the scene, Days of Future Past was far superior to the more recent X-Men: Apocalypse. Hopping through time, DOFP brought together the original Xavier and Magneto (Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen) and the newer, younger (yet chronologically older) versions (James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender). X-Men and X2 were great for their time, but dated quickly, and Last Stand threw in too many new characters at the last minute.

Of all 9 X-attached movies (Logan will make 10), the only real competitors for Days of Future Past’s claim of ‘best’ are First Class and Deadpool, and DOFP encompasses a huge mutant cast. If you’re new to X-Men, think of Days of Future Past as the mutant Empire Strikes Back.

4) Suicide Squad (2016)

Tom Hardy (Bane in The Dark Knight Rises), was originally set to play Rick Flagg, but opted to act opposite Leo DiCaprio in The Revenant instead.

Suicide Squad transcends anti-heroism. It addresses the fact that many of us unashamedly support the villains.

Task Force X is one of the most original and enduring concepts in DC history. Supervillain lifers, most of which are awaiting death row, are let loose to complete government black ops missions, on the sole basis that they are expendable. The reward? Time off their sentences. However, if they veer even slightly from the plan, the explosives implanted in their necks are detonated. The great thing about Suicide Squad comics, is that the line-up is ever rotating, and mostly C-List at best. You truly don’t know who will be killed off. Even to the real-life DC executives, these guys are cannon fodder.

The movie had a lot of great scenes, and brought limelight upon long over-looked characters. Plot, and corporate editing, were clearly an issue though. A few characters seemed under-explored and fleeting, in favour of a nameless CGI baddy. A sequel looks likely, however, and if nothing else, upcoming Batman and Harley Quinn-centric features are confirmed. There’s still plenty of time to improve upon the mistakes of Suicide Squad’s first installation.

3) Watchmen (2009)

Watchmen is the crown jewel of Alan Moore’s unprecedented graphic novel work. Moore is the man behind V for Vendetta, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Batman: The Killing Joke, John Constantine, and From Hell.

Watchmen is less a superhero movie, and more a critical commentary on vigilantism, geo-politics, and the world’s perception of justice.

Watchmen is a superhero tale for people sceptical of superheroes. It’s over-arching narrative explores the negatives of street justice from all perspectives. It shows the flaws in those who look messianic on the surface, and casts light upon their mundane lives behind the scenes.

Adapted from a 1985 graphic novel that is widely considered the best in its genre, Zack Snyder’s (Man of Steel, BvS: Dawn of Justice) Ultimate Cut of Watchmen even includes the Black Freighter side-story - A sub-plot of loss and vengeance in the time of piracy, that reflects and highlights the main story.

2) Deadpool 2

Marvel’s Wade ‘Deadpool’ Wilson is a brazen and direct parody of DC’s Slade ‘Deathstroke’ Wilson.

He’s not the hero we deserve, or the one we need right now. In fact, he’s barely a hero.

Deadpool was a roll of the dice that came up double-sixes. Not only is the property lacking the name-value of most super-flicks, but Deadpool’s entire existence is a sly nod to the competition.

Sometimes the direction, casting, script and soundtrack of a movie create an inexplicable smoothie of epic-ness though. Deadpool was one of those smoothies. After failed efforts in Blade: Trinity, Green Lantern and, in fact, as Deadpool, in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds defied all odds and made Deadpool the comic-conversion of the day.

Funny enough to hold its own in the comedy genre beyond the world of super-humans, Deadpool is a triumph in the same vein as Guardians of the Galaxy, but with more blood and sex toys.

1) The Dark Knight (2008)

The scene where Joker must repeatedly hit the faulty detonator button to blow up the hospital, was all ad-libbed. They only had one shot at the scene, and it didn’t go to plan. Luckily Heath Ledger’s improvisation made it a cinematic stand-out.

“When the chips are down, these civilized people…they’ll eat each other.”

Call it a far-cry from the comics if you’d like, but Heath Ledger’s Joker is a cultural icon. Like Malcolm McDowell’s Alex DeLarge in A Clockwork Orange, Ledger’s portrayal of the Clown Prince of Crime was unique, and aggressively of its time.

Batman Begins and The Dark Knight Rises deserve to make this list as well, but I thought dedicating nearly a third of the list to them would be somewhat redundant. The Joker’s schemes in Dark Knight are inspired and sadistic social experiments, putting everything concocted in the Saw films to shame. You don’t need to care about Batman, or the wider metahuman-populated world to enjoy Dark Knight. If there was ever an entry point for casual fans who just don’t get what all this Joker hype is about, Christopher Nolan’s second Bat-flick is it.

10 X-Men That Deserve To Hit The Big Screen

Mutants of every shape, size and level of power imaginable have passed through the hallowed halls of Xavier’s Institute. Or tried to burn it to the ground.

We’ve seen over 60 mutants in the X-Men film franchise already.

Who can possibly be left?!

As well as the X-Men themselves, Marvel’s mutants have spun off into an array of splinter groups and comic titles over the years. Standouts include X-Force, a mutant black-ops strike team; X-Factor, a team authorised by the government as opposed to acting outside it; Excalibur and Alpha Flight, the British and Canadian satellite teams respectively; as well as Generation X and the New Mutants, teenage mutants on the rise. This has created a breeding ground of near countless mutants across the globe and throughout time.

‘Logan’ will mark the 10th FOX film with direct or indirect connection to the X-Men mythos, and they’ve covered a fair bit of ground. There’s plenty of untapped potential left though!

10) Magma

Magma can heal knife-wounds by turning her body to fire and cauterizing the gash.

Amara Aquilla a.k.a. ‘Magma’ can produce lava at will, as you would expect.

In a rebooted X-Men, a fling between Amara and Iceman seems obvious, perhaps reworking elements of the Iceman/Rogue flirtation in ‘X-Men’ and ‘X2’ where physical contact proves impossible. Equally, much like Iceman and Pyro in ‘X2’ and ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’, they make easy rivals too, either in respectful competition, or genuine conflict.

What’s more interesting about Amara, is the fact she comes from a secret splinter colony of ancient Romans. Hidden from the world in Brazil, and ruled by a 17,000-year-old mutant sorceress, they have quietly existed since the assassination of Caesar. The Amazon rainforest is a stunning back-drop for any movie, and the sorceress – Selene – with a birthdate way back before anything resembling civilization, could blow the lacklustre Apocalypse’s (of ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’) immortality angle out of the water.

With Chloe Grace Moretz as Magma, and Eva Green as Selene, what I’m calling ‘X-Men: Epoch’ sounds worth watching already, without even factoring in the rest of the squad.

9) Feral & Thornn

They both lost their extraordinary abilities following ‘M-Day’, when Scarlet Witch stripped nearly all mutants of their powers.

Originally part of the sewer-dwelling mutant outfit the Morlocks, feline sister act Feral and Thornn’s appearance is tried and tested in the costume and make-up department.

Known for their interactions with Cable and X-Force; either a bitchy and sarcastic, or savage animalistic adaptation of Feral and Thornn could compliment the permanent, visible mutation of Colossus down the line in the Deadpool franchise, once Cable is involved.

From a darker angle, Feral is alleged to have killed several members of her own family, and both her and Thorn were molested by a coke-addled stepfather, so plenty of bleak material there to use sympathetically, or as origin of criminal psyche. Real-life sisters Kate and Rooney Mara could sharpen their claws here, in characters that would blend easily with Sabretooth, either at his side, or in very claw-oriented combat.

8) Lockheed

Like all good dragons, Lockheed can breathe fire too.

Lockheed is a multi-lingual dimension-travelling alien dragon. That should probably suffice for a movie appearance really.

Most frequently the companion of Kitty ‘Shadowcat’ Pryde, Lockheed seems like an obvious merchandise gravy train. If designed in a Pixar-cute style, Lockheed could serve as an E.T.-esque companion for a young Kitty, or a more pet-like devotee of a grown, no-nonsense Shadowcat.

In a more serious context, Lockheed has been outed as a spy-in-the-camp before, his understanding of various galactic languages kept secret. This makes him versatile as an agent or double agent, as well as serving as translator and encyclopaedia, like a flying, purple Bat-Computer. He’s also been known to associate with our next contender.

7) Magik

Magik can also use telepathic blocks to prevent even Xavier from reading her mind.

Illyana Rasputina, sister of Colossus, has been around since 1975, and as the sibling of an existing character in a recent blockbuster, she’s got a very easy in.

It wasn’t until 1983 that she really took off as ‘Magik’, but traversing dimensions with teleportation discs, and brandishing her Soulsword, Magik is highly powerful, after spending a period in ‘Limbo’. Whether it’s only spoken about in the past tense, or physically visited, perhaps to retrieve Magik, the whole idea of ‘Limbo’ seems like something Deadpool could comfortably scoff at.

A hulking, shiny man being reasonably difficult to age, the casting range for Magik is quite broad, but Mila Kunis’ work on ‘Family Guy’ and ‘Ted’ over the years shows she has the humour to hold her own in a ‘Deadpool’ flick. Plus…it’s Mila Kunis.

6) Mimic

His name appears on a huge list of mutants on Stryker’s screen in ‘X2’.

Around since 1966. The first X-Man to not be a mutant. The first X-Man to join the starting line-up.

One-time Deputy Leader of the X-Men. The ability to absorb, varyingly, the superpowers and/or lives, of those around him.

Live-action appearances: Name listed in obscure Easter-egg

Animated appearances: One, brief.

I guess Mimic’s problem is it’s hard to make any individual character look strong, or special, if there’s a guy that can do it all, and then some, with ease. That’s why a film featuring Calvin ‘Mimic’ Rankin needs to be about Mimic either losing his powers, and the team’s quest to help him regain them. Or – Mimic’s the villain.

One thing the X-Men movies have never really done is pit the entire team against one extremely powerful opponent. Whether it’s the Brotherhood, the Hellfire Club, or Apocalypse’s Horsemen, the X-Men have never really had a Doomsday-type. Apocalypse should have been that, but wasn’t. Mimic could be. I envision a quite regular sized man, stood opposite an army of mutants in a field. Atmospheric music kicks in as blades shoot out of his hands, he grows to the size of Colossus, sprouts angel-wings, turns to ice, then rises in the air like Phoenix, before obliterating the entire battlefield with Cyclops-eye-lasers.

Dave Franco projects the right mix of arrogance and boyish charm to be a determined, vindictive Mimic, while maybe redeeming himself by becoming a member of the Academy once he’s been foiled.

5) Sage

Sage also used the alias Diana Fox while working with the British X-team - Excalibur.

Sage a.k.a. Tessa is a slight point of contention for the die-hard X-Men fanbase. She made her first appearance 17 years after the X-Men were first published but was written in to have been one of the first X-Men, arguably the first. She discovered an injured Professor Xavier in a cave and helped him out, but was sent undercover with the Hellfire Club, and never mentioned to the team.

Whether you like established canon being rewritten or not, this does make for an interesting film plot that could be tied back into the events of ‘X-Men: First Class’ as a co-running plot that was kept hidden at the time.

Angelina Jolie seems like a dream candidate. Someone who can be stealthy and athletic, while coming off mature and discreet, accentuating the decades old, but deadly secret, friendship with Charles.

4) Northstar & Aurora

When joining hands, the pair can produce a blinding light, but they have little control over how strong it is.

This twin brother and sister duo can run, fly, punch and most everything else at extreme speed.

As well as badass powers, Northstar is one of the first openly gay characters in comic history, Aurora has an ongoing dual personality disorder, and they were separated after their parents died in a car crash. These themes were commendably approached back in 1979 when the pair made their debut in the inaugural ‘Alpha Flight’. It makes for even more diverse and emotionally interesting characters today.

While FOX have joint ownership of Magneto’s offspring, a film setting these two against Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch could be a moving, and multi-layered piece of filmmaking, with some chaotic destruction and magic too. Particularly if the car accident that killed Northstar and Aurora’s parents was caused by Magneto. Add a degree of empathy between the two sets of siblings, with Magneto forcing Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch into the attack, and things could get interesting.

Josh Hutcherson (‘The Hunger Games’) and Abigail Breslin (‘Scream Queens’) spring to mind.

3) Vulcan

Vulcan is one of only eleven ‘Omega-level’ mutants, a group including Jean ‘Phoenix’ Grey. However, he has been described as beyond that level.

Gabriel Summers, younger brother of Cyclops and Havok, is sure to hit the screen sometime.

Only emerging in 2006, the youngest of the Summers boys has an axe to grind. Literally cut from his mother’s womb by an intergalactic majestor, Vulcan was aged artificially and sent back to Earth to toil as a slave. Eventually discovering the truth of his origins, he waged an interstellar war of vengeance.

He can control and produce most forms of energy, direct them, and manipulate them. This makes him an ideal foil for a united Cyclops and Havok, rendering their beams of energy useless. ‘X-Men Origins: Cyclops and Havok’ quickly followed by ‘X-Men Origins: Vulcan’ could breathe some life back into the whole concept.

Jesse Eisenberg could do DC/Marvel double-duty for this unwilfully estranged sibling.

2) Forge

Forge turned down a job with S.H.I.E.L.D. to continue serving in the Vietnam war.

The mechanical super-genius Forge has had romances with both Storm and Mystique.

First rearing his oily head in 1984, Forge has a mutation that makes visualizing mechanical workings, and applying it to engineering and machinery, a cake-walk. As well as this handy ability, he happens to be a Cheyenne mystic, and ‘Nam veteran, who while on tour, summoned the souls of his slaughtered comrades to avenge their own deaths. It also brought a demon to Earth. So, the grizzled veteran atoning for a traumatic past bit is all there. Can see him saving a younger mutant’s life at the climax of a film, absolving himself in death.

This has Danny Trejo written all over, though Wes Studi could be great, and has actual Native American descent.

1) Polaris/Magnetrix

Polaris was given her name by Erik the Red, the same Shi’Ar alien who enslaved Vulcan.

First appearing in 1968, if anyone can stop Magneto, his daughter can.

Lorna Dane was the daughter of Magneto by an affair with a spoken-for lady, before he ever met the mother of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. Her parentage has been confirmed, unconfirmed and reconfirmed over the years, but as it stands, it’s official, she’s Erik’s. Her powers are magnet-based as well, potentially making for some great scenes of throwing aircraft and the like at each other.

In the Northstar/Aurora vs. Scarlet Witch/Quicksilver idea I discussed earlier, Polaris would make an ideal secret weapon against Magneto’s puppet-mastery at the last minute.

Cate Blanchett’s portrayal of Galadriel in ‘The Lord of the Rings’, particularly when confronted with the One Ring, could transfer easily to this role.

Hand-shockers and exploding Christmas gifts?

The Joker can do far… far worse.

Since April 1940 The Joker has been the number one thorn in the side of everybody’s favourite Caped Crusader. Portrayed in almost every version of Batman on page and screen, the Clown Prince of Crime has racked up quite the Gotham City rap sheet. Here’s my pick for his ten most horrific offences!

Originating in the ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’ event in the 80s, Alexander Luthor Jr. was the lone defender of Earth-3, battling against the Crime Syndicate, a backwards evil version of the Justice League. He was one of the central heroes in this universe-warping 12-issue run that killed both Supergirl and The Flash.

Years later Luthor has become jaded by the effects of the new world he played a part in creating, and regrets what reality has become. Forming a new version of the Society of Supervillains, Luthor Jr. made the major mistake of disbarring Joker for being too unpredictable. Joker (2008)

Batman: The Killing Joke (1988)

Probably the best-known Batman graphic novel of all time; Alan Moore’s 1988 masterpiece, illustrated by Brian Bollard, highlights how inseparable The Joker is from Batman, and how one cannot exist without the other. As well as kidnapping Commissioner Gordon himself, and dragging him through a literal and emotional mad house, The Joker pays a visit to Gordon’s daughter Barbara. Unbeknownst to Gordon, his daughter is secretly Batman’s female sidekick Batgirl, and The Joker introduces himself by shooting her through the hip, paralyzing her from the waist down. Luckily for Barbara, she also happens to be an ace hacker and continues to assist the Caped Crusader through technological espionage from the comfort of her wheelchair. When the Bat finally comes to save the day, he finds the Commissioner naked, in a cage, sporting a dog collar, and babbling nonsense. The last few frames of the graphic novel sparked a popular internet fan theory that Batman killed The Joker at the end. Alan Moore has never confirmed this however, and the killing isn’t in the original transcript.

Recently adapted into DC’s first R-Rated animation feature, the film version of ‘The Killing Joke’ suggests that Barbara had also been raped by The Joker, and adds a controversial romance between the Dark Knight and his younger sidekick.

Although other entrants on this list are more gruesome, or more complex, the death of Jason Todd is one of the defining moments in the history of both Batman and his nemesis.

ELO Hell Ranked: Every League player should know these guys before Ranking

Fellow League players, we are gathered here today to read another awesome article by BestEzrealSEA and give our respects to our fallen brothers who have succumbed to forever quit the game because of #4 and 1. However, for those of you who still play; let’s have a little fun with our list. See if you or anyone you know fits in at least one of these categories.

But first, let’s first be clear. ELO Hell is always perceived to be a low-ranked division’s problem. Little do all of you know that ELO Hell exists in every division except Challenger, as every division, even Diamond (aka Ranked Purgatory), is complete hell and must be escaped by going up to Master and Challenger (aka Ranked Heaven).

Rightly so, Challengers and Masters are always looked upon and feared as Gods most of the time. Fast forward to our list, even Challengers would know all of these players. I would know (if I actually get to Challenger). But that’s not the point at hand, though!

However, let’s be real for a second. We all know that there are different types of LoL players, some are honorable, some are friend-request-worthy, and some are just downright annoying kids who need to see a therapist or at least the end of their fathers’ belt. Yet, we still co-exist with each other in chaotic harmony. Good luck stepping up to Silver with some of these crowds.

So, without further ado, why don’t we take a look at the different types of League players that you may or may not wish you got stuck with on your Provisional games, shall we?

10. The Honorable One

"You haven't fully achieved this type unless you got these badges!"

Ranks Most Associated With: All Ranks

Yes, we’re gonna start on a good note. Deal with it. These are the type of players that you’d really, really wish that would get paired with you on your Series and/or Provisionals. But the sad truth is that there’s just about the same chance to get these players as a chance of a single bacterium surviving those commercial anti-bacterial soaps.

But don’t worry, 0.01% isn’t that small of a number if you just believe in yourself!

These are the well-mannered and well-skilled players that just make you want to hit that Honor button and maybe even the report button because you just want to relay how great they are to Riot. Don’t worry, they won’t get banned! (Like other people *ehem* number 4 *ehem*)

Not much to say here, the chances of coming across these people these days are very slim. But don’t let that stop you from trying, though!

9. The Stagnant Season Veteran

"The Holy Grails of Season I. Respectable, yet not that intimidating if it's Bronze."

Ranks Most Associated With: Bronze - Diamond

These are the douche players who think they know what they’re doing just because they’ve played League since the early ages of it. They brag about how they’ve played through multiple seasons, yet they still are able to amaze us by not moving a spot from their divisions.

Players like these need to grow up. Being somewhat more experienced in the field doesn’t really make them better than the newer players. You may have been able to see Faker win the Season 3 Championship or have witnessed HotshotGG at his prime but that doesn’t mean jack. It’s an evolving game and your skills have to evolve with it.

But hey, it’s still a great thought to think about how a player remained so inadequate and incompetent for years straight.

If you also try to counter their logic (pun definitely intended), you’re gonna have a hard time.

8. The Girl “Gamer”

"I really can't find any pictures to depict Girl Gamers without being hunted down by their fans, so let Team Siren handle this."

Ranks Most Associated With: All Ranks, most notably Silver-Platinum.

Not being totally sexist, but some gamer girls are just really, really annoying. These are the players that tell you they’re a girl once they’re losing to earn sympathy. If they’re on the opposing team and get totally dominating, they’d say they’re a girl and berate you too. But most of the time they’re just poking fun at hookup trolls who want a piece of that girl gamer cake.

You’ll see these girls everywhere in Ranked. And to be perfectly clear, this does not represent every gamer girl. There are only legit gamers, boy or girl, it doesn’t matter. (These are females who broadcast themselves in chat to be girls so that desperate teenage League boys put them up on a pedestal and worship them). It’s as if they just couldn’t get enough of the attention.

Some even reach up to Challenger. Perks of having a short-term boyfriend who’s high-ELO, I guess. But we’re not here to judge (on the other hand, we totally are).

7. The eSports Fanatic

"The Mid-lane God that everybody worships. Bow down before Faker-senpai!"

Ranks Most Associated With: Silver – Challenger

For those of you who are Bronze and think that you should be here, reconsider having that SKT tag on your name first. That tag doesn’t count, and there’s no way in heaven you’ll ever be Faker in Bronze, so try moving up a division or go to hell.

These are the players who you’d likely see with a club tag of their supported team on their names. Obviously, there are gonna be some bandwagon members, but let’s filter them out of here as they have no place in LoL other than Bronze division. eSports fanatics are, more often than not, just dreamers who want to get better at playing LoL

Usually in high ranks, some players tend to imitate their idols’ moves, such as Dopa, Gosu, Bubba Kush, etc. It’s also done in lower ranks, but the skills shown down there are also the main source of the Youtube montage of Wood Division Adventures.

These are usually also the players who buy every commemorative Seasonal skin by Worlds champions. SKT’s new set of Champion skins are going to be released, so we’ll see a fresh batch of dreamers who feel that they’re Faker when it does.

6. The Couples

"Couple gamers in their natural habitat. Please don't feed the couples."

Ranks Most Associated With: All Ranks

These are the players who just make you want to smash your head onto your keyboard. They aren’t completely toxic, but they are nauseous to every single League player alive because they’re too disgusting for a single, loveless person.

Couples have developed a habit of creating creative usernames that match, usually a “His” or “Her” prefix on their names that’s both very creative and an eyesore for single people. Couples tend to go Bot-lane together, which could go either of two ways: They either develop synergy and carry, or they both suck and intentionally throw the whole game altogether.

It’s usually the latter, but wouldn’t it be nice to have a “Her” someday? Win or lose, that’d probably be fun.

5. The Smurf

"Yeahp, this is actually a legit business in LoL as it's completely not against the rules."

Ranks Most Associated With: Unranked, Low Ranks

Smurf is just the League lingo for a guy who basically created another separate account.

Smurfing is a very popular loophole of LoL. These are the people who create new accounts so that they may beat less experienced players who are not in their skill level. Why do people do this you may ask? So that they can feel better about themselves, of course, what else would unskilled bastards do?

It’s also fairly certain that sometimes players just do it out of boredom. They try to recreate those glory days and euphoric means of leveling up when they were just starting out. I mean, that’s why I created mine. It’s a great way to remind you how you started and how you’ve grown since then.

Usually, Smurfs are generally lower-ranked accounts than the Smurf’s main account. But if one is Bronze V, they more often than not ditch that account for the Smurf. Who could blame them?

Smurfing is also a great cool down should one be tilting on their Ranked games. Yet it’s still a bad practice as it brings imbalance to the new players of League. But I guess they just have to learn the hard way.

4. The Intentional Trolls (aka TITs)

"Picking Graves isn't a troll move, but hey, losing with an OP champ is just as much."

Ranks Most Associated With: Unranked, Bronze to Master

We’re here now, to an evil of League that's almost inhumane, disgusting, and purely annoying. These are the infamous players who throw games on purpose just for the sake of the whole team losing. What’s even worse? They do it in Ranked games.

The main reasons for doing so are completely at random, up to the troll, and even in some cases are just unknown. But anyway, it’s a complete dick move and it’s supposed to be a ban-able offense. But to everybody’s relief, TITs are growing smaller in numbers thanks to Riot’s strict implementations.

However, any player may be ticked off into becoming these bastards. So always be careful and be nice to every teammate, unless you want to lose. Remember what the guide says: “Players who harass their teammate after a mistake lose 15% more games.” Well, maybe not exactly that, but you get the point.

3. The “Laggers”

"RIP-perino, Darius. You've served Noxus long enough. Death by Lag pls"

Ranks Most Associated With: All Ranks; more practiced by lower ranks.

These are the types of players that pretend to be lagging to hide the fact that they just made a mistake or just plain suck. This happens on every rank, including Challenger. It’s okay to make mistakes, but here in LoL, one mistake could lead to a Nexus Turret going down in mere seconds.

“What they don’t know won’t hurt them and my pride”. That’s the motto of these guys. Instead of learning from the mistake, they’ll put the blame on lag. Even though it never lagged, they’ll always choose to blame another player and/or circumstance other than themselves. This is why this happens more on the low ranks.

Not being able to admit you made a grave mistake and improving from that mistake is not a trait for an aspiring high-ELO player. This may happen on Challenger sometimes, but there, it’s really pride on the line as they’re always expected to be the best-of-the-best. It’s sad if you think about it, there’s so much pressure to keep that Top 200 spot alive.

Anyway, back to the point. Sometimes, players are indeed absorbed in lag because of their slow-ass internet. This causes them to not play well and even lead to throwing as a result of the lag. Remember kids, if you know you’re lagging, don’t play Ranked. You’ll ruin it for everybody.

2. The "Noob" Skinners

"Some players really need to improve on their skills rather than use skins. Credits to 9gag!"

Ranks Most Associated With: All Ranks

These are the players who just have too much money on their wallets. Hence, they spend it on RP and different skins that they don’t even need. But that’s not the whole essence of a skinner.
Skinners are those who have skins for their champions, yet they suck at playing the champion, haven’t even played the champion once, or they just get thrashed while wearing an expensive skin. It’s really such a shame, though. For example, to see a Pulsefire Ezreal just losing, It’s just a shame to see all that money put to waste. Note that Pulsefire Ezreal is $25 alone.

Players are dubbed as skinners once they established a feeding program all on their own, despite having an awesome skin. People these days forget that skins aren’t just for aesthetic pleasure, it shows that you have somewhat mastered the champion. If you get caught losing with a skin, prepare to be dubbed a skinner!

1. The Kids

"This kid accurately represents all the crybaby kids playing League."

Ranks Most Associated With: Unranked – Diamond

Alright, we’ve reached the end of our list. For the last type, it’s the most populated type of player there is, the Kids. Infamous and rampant, these type of players are always online (at least until it’s past their bedtime) and they’re always going to be in one of your daily games.

Kids in Ranked games don’t have to be necessarily a real-life kid. More often than not, young adults or teens are also closely following their footsteps when it comes to their toxicity. Like the wise Atticus Finch once said: “I believe, at one point, we were all kids once”. Again, I’m not good with quotes, but you get the idea.

Being a kid is essentially just being extremely immature, extremely irrational, and extremely unskilled. Yet they have the gall to flame out everybody and are willing to go AFK and intentionally throw the game just so they may get revenge. Sounds familiar? Every League player has come across these little assholes.

We don’t have to go into detail to explain how kids are kids in League. It’s kind of self-explanatory. But take note that this plague only happens up until Diamond. Think of kids as training weights to success. They’re not certainly helpful to you and your team, but they’re definitely of some help to your carrying skills.

There’s a reason why the number of kids you’ll meet will gradually lessen while you move up, as they’re just training for the big leagues. Take your ticket, don’t blow your gasket. If you feel that hanging out with the kid leagues isn’t for you, adapt and get some Challenger skills. Don’t cuss your whole team out and cry like one. Be like #10, if you still remember what the 10th type is.

10 Ways Riot Can Improve League of Legends

Rito, if you're reading this, don't stop reading until the end.

We all know Rito, our glorious founder, and creator of League of Legends. We always cry out to these guys for our wanted changes and reworks - how could we not know them? Rito pls.

Riot has always made great changes to League, with the help of the community. There you go, someone had to say it. To clarify, this article isn’t a rant to Riot, but a friendly reminder of what the people want and why we want it.

Also, please note that the tone of this article is not berating Riot. It’s more of a sassy, salty Season VI adjuster who’s still tilting down the Ranked slope because of the imbalance. Throw in a little humor in here and there too. Remember, nothing here is supposed to piss anyone off.

Now, let’s delve into the wants and needs of the people, shall we?

“10) BALANCE. THE. GAME.”

Not once has there been a full balance in the game throughout all these years.

Most of the patches in the last recent years of League, more often than not, contained some pretty OP Champs and Items that literally “rocked the boat” of every player on every server. However, Riot can't be blamed for this as they're working too many changes planned for the future rather than sticking around to fully balance the game. Isn’t that right, Rito?

Well, it seriously can’t be helped as you guys are really busy with more progressive changes.

But still, a lot of Champions and items have gone stale as a result. People tend to autopick and are deathly afraid of “Autoban” champions to this day.

Just for once, please balance the game to the point of us not worrying about what we didn’t ban out of the 7 OP Autobans you totally forgot to nerf.

“9) Say No to Point Clamping”

"Poor guy. 1 Like = 1 Prayer"

Don’t you just hate it when that happens? One second you go from 0 to 80 points real quick and then you’d only win 19 points the next game, leaving you to waste another good 30 minutes or so just for 1 LP.

Why so stingy, Rito? Isn’t winning games in a row enough punishment for us? Isn’t dealing with toxic crybabies and carrying them to victory enough proof that we deserve a higher rank? Rito pls.

Sure, a lot of people may counter this with: “It’s just an extra game to prove that you are really deserving of climbing up for a series. Stop being such a pu-“

Aight, we got it. But it’s still annoying though and time was still wasted on chance. You’re not guaranteed that you’ll win anyway, so there’s a possibility of more games wasted because of a little difference in League Points.

The only people to not agree with me on this are players who have never experienced getting Point Clamped.

“8) Encourage women to go Pro”

"Team Siren, the closest recorded all-female team to make it in NA pro-play."

No, Remilia doesn’t count. I’m not being an asshole to the LGBT, but she really isn’t. It’s unfair for biological girls and you know it.

But yeah, Remilia was the only “girl” strong enough to make it into pro-play. She could have gone a lot farther than she would have if she didn’t get harassed by the toxic community. It was a shame on everybody’s part, and Riot could’ve done better to address the harassment.

Unsurprisingly, Remilia left Renegades and LoL competitive play for good. Back to square one.

Riot, please advocate women to actually partake in pro-play. Don’t brand them into that of a Support, Ranked-only image. They can do so much better than that and with the help of the developers plus a little dose of the League hype; I’m sure that League of Legends will produce another “Remilia” soon enough. Let’s just hope she’s hot.

Women can do so much better if they just put in effort. This point is kind of a longshot since it's really not gender that dictates whether or not you can make it into pro-play- it's skill. But I believe that there's so much untapped power in LoL girl gamers.

Rito just has to make them believe that they can make it as much as boys can. Rito pls.

"7) Sandbox Mode"

"Don't even. It's not gonna happen."

“Oh not this again, we’ve already explained this, leik, a year ago!” a Rioter might say if he were to stumble upon this. Well, the answer is: Yes, you have. The thing is, we’re not all that happy about it.

Do you know how productive it would be to us if we had a sandbox mode? I don’t think you do, Riot. Because as the 2015 LoL-fanatic me could recall, it’s not on your list of things you wanna/have to do. You’re too busy with other plans.

Which were great, the rework on the most outdated of ADCs was a blast. You know, even the creation of what would be the catastrophic ADC-you’d-never-ever-want-to-feed-or-kiss-your-team-goodbye rework to which we know as Machine Gun Kog’Maw and the special snowflake, Quinn, that's only either OP or an absolute Feeding Program.

But hey, everything still went great! It’s just another day of Rito balancing the game.

However, to just check in with reason, a whole lot of our fellow players would have a platform they could test out Champions, skills, flashes, and jukes without ever have to face the humiliation of a 0/11/0 LeBlanc. Lelz Reported.

Even if it’s never gonna happen, it would’ve been fun if LoL had it, wouldn’t it? A lot of players who are in desperate need of a little polishing on jukes and flashes could have made it out of Bronze by now.

Ranking is like the ocean. It’s a big, vast place of saltiness with a slim chance of people and too often a chance to see wild animals under pressure in a sea full of waste. It’s also kind of like New York, if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere.

However, like the ocean and New York, there are always some salty, toxic, and Sivir-ly stupid players out there who’ve just managed to save up some LP to burn. Of course, with their poor sucker teammates who are in the same sinking boat with them. Of course, I always forget to report them because my anger makes me automatically press the “Skip Waiting For Stats” button. FML.

Ranked Trolls are the absolute scum of League that just makes you feel like you need to punch something to oblivion. You cannot win games with one throwing so hard, that you just want to play Dota II instead and suck at it than watch your LoL skills die along with your 32-4 team. #FF@20

Rito has absolutely no way of stopping these guys and most of the time they even ban the wrong guys. Mostly innocent bastards like Dunkey or my friend who decided that he wants to cuss the hell out of one game because he tilted 2 divisions down due to trolling cunts.

See, that’s the thing, Rito can’t ban without making mistakes. Trolls will always prevail as Rito can’t be rule-enforcing and lenient at the same time. If they do come up with a great solution to this, then League is sure to be better for all of us. For now, learn to live with an antidote as the path to Ranked is a toxic one.

As aforementioned, there’s always going to be a time when you’re too pissed off that you "forget" that the report button is only at the post-game screen. So much for reporting that obnoxious teammate that made you lose LP, right?

Well, sucks for you. Now that guy is about to do it again to more innocent suckers or to you again when you press that “Play Again” button. But let’s be honest, even if you reported the guy, it would take so much more than that to keep an asshole out of League.

At least if we had this option, we could lessen their chances of doing it again. Rito pls!

"4) Pause Option in Ranked Games"

Remember that time when you really had to take a shit and you realize that you’re playing Ranked?

I think a better question would be: “Who doesn’t?”

But on a more serious note, a lot of things can happen while you’re playing Ranked. If you go AFK, you’ll get reported. If you leave, you lose LP. If you lose because you left in-game due to a real emergency, you get reported and you lose LP should your team lose. There's just no winning this battle.

Ranked is a very important mode in the game. It’s a real-time Tournament Draft to place you in a better rank, Riot. This is the simplest wish on this list. It doesn't have to be 30 mins like Tournament Draft. Please make it so, Rito!

"3) Rework on ALL Lanes"

I know this is coming as the ADCs and Mages are getting re-vamped for the season. I just wanna point out that really doing so will bring another level of fresh perspective into the game.

I just hope that they don't go too crazy on the champs and items. *cough* Taric Rework and Mercurial Scimitar *hacks*

But to make this short and sweet, I hope that Riot knows that they have a LOT of balancing to do after every change. For God’s sake, please balance the whole damn game for once after a huge change. Rito pls, we only have 3 bans per team!

"2) Loss Prevented: Unlucky Circumstances"

"Only Season 3-4 Players can get this. Probably every season for EUW. Ahhh memories..."

There are a lot of times that a player would be pitted against worthy opponents and get a lousy team that can’t even carry itself. As a result, most likely the trolls will quit and the others would get too low of morale to even continue a losing fight.

In this case, especially when a teammate left, let the remaining teams be spared with a Loss Prevented if they surrender and the Enemy Team deems them worthy for a mercy game. A mercy game was an idea brought up a few years back. It's for a losing team to get lesser penalties if they lost the game due to unavoidable circumstances granted by the winning team.

If my memory serves me right, in the past, this has already been brought up along with Ao Shin (still waiting on him, Rito!).

It isn’t that bad of an idea. Just innovate and remove the loopholes to which players could take advantage of this in Ranked. Maybe unless of getting a Loss Prevented right away, the game data could be sent to Riot or any governing company who runs a specific region. Then they can decide if the game could be deemed as Loss Prevented.

It’s just to give the honest and great guys who don’t deserve a loss the benefit of the doubt.

League of Legends is already an awesome game. All the changes that Riot made to make it this way is just fine, it’s their call. But I still remember the early Season spirit where people played so they can have fun. The toxicity wasn’t that heavy and the Tribunal was still in play.

Sure, there were so many things wrong with balance back in Season I and II. But Riot fixed them all and they did it their way. Sure, Evelyn was somewhat unplayable during those times, tanks ruled the world, Supports had the hardest jobs, and Yi could go AP Mid and still delete an entire team. But Rito fixed it, didn’t they?

Give them time and they will fix our current problems and imbalances too.

Every year there was a surprise that players were just dying to see. Flash forward to today, there’s already so much progress to the game and everything is still thanks to Riot.

As long as we have Riot as League of Legends’ game developer, this game will improve and go down in our history books as one of the greatest games ever made.
