With a game as packed as Animal Crossing: New Leaf, there are a lot of things to accomplish as you wander across your village. For ideas on what to do, here is a list of ten of the best things to do.

10. Learn Emotions from Dr. Shrunk

When you build Club LOL in Main Street, you can visit Dr. Shrunk every morning for a random joke. These daily jokes give you something in return. When you check your touch screen, you will notice that you have a list of displayable emotions.

Each day you listen to a new joke, a new emotion is unlocked. Try getting all of the jokes. As you collect jokes, organize them in alphabetical order.

9. Working at the Cafe

After you have made enough Museum contributions, you can order the cafe to be built using your status as a mayor. When you talk with Brewster, he will allow you to make some extra bells.

Making coffees for the residents gives you more insight into their personalities and coffee preferences. What’s even better is that you can make a few more bells as you work.

8. Upgrading Your House

If you are discontent with your house’s current condition, you should consider investing in your living space using bells. Tom Nook will be happy to help you with a good house loan.

Everybody has different preferences for house space. There are side expansions to your living room that provide up to three extra hallways into more rooms. Some people don’t like having their living room cut open with three extra holes on each side.

7. Upgrading the Nookling Store

As with all other Animal Crossing games, you can increase the size of your local Nook store by buying lots of items. The more you buy, the more bells the shop owners have to increase their storage space.

As the Nooks expand, Leif will move into their store. His items will be sold on the first floor.

Cyrus, the brother of Reese, will upholster your furniture after plenty of furniture has been cataloged. He charges a small fee of bells for each upholstery.

You can bring your ore into the shop and have him customize your furniture following the ore’s properties. A set of golden furniture is yours if you have the funds and patience.

4. Public Works Projects

Since you are the mayor of your town, you have a say in the town’s design. The Public Works Projects form as an extension of your will for the town’s design.

Many projects increase Main Street’s economy. Others serve as fun decorations for your town’s infrastructure. More projects will become available as you talk with more villagers.

3. Catching Bugs

When you buy a net from Nookling’s Junction, you can start catching bugs. Your touch screen will be updated whenever you capture a new bug species. You can donate bugs to Blathers. Despite his disgust, he appreciates the additions.

The Public Works Projects are what set this game apart from its predecessors. Instead of being confined to the mayor’s whims, you can take control and erect buildings based on your vision. As you spend more time in your village, you will have more access to various blueprints.

10. Cube Sculpture

Smug villagers in your town, like Marshal, will recommend this project to you at random. It is a black cube tilted on its axis.

The cube looks good as a centerpiece for a park or garden. It stands out without looking garish.

9. Standee

The standee is one of the most versatile projects in the game. Any design can be applied to it. Since players can customize designs, they can make their standee look like whatever they desire.

When you type in certain codes, you can travel to dreamy versions of other villages. Of course, nothing you do in these other villages has any effect on the real world.

Unlike the real economy, the primary form of making money in Animal Crossing is selling valuable items. While working for Brewster can provide some income, it pales in comparison to what can be gained through selling the listed items.

10. Local Fruits

Your local fruit is the best source of money early in the game. They have an abundant supply and can be planted in the ground. The more trees, the more fruit you can sell.

9. Ores

Ores are valuable stones that are found by banging rocks with shovels. Every day, there is a rock with these stones waiting to be released. To maximize your returns, dig some holes that are diagonal to the rock of interest. Try to leave room between you and the stone.

As you hit your stone, the ores will be released onto the surrounding area. As you hit more, there will be more ores released. You can sell these for extra bells.

8. Gold

Gold lies within the same ore rock as the others. The difference between this one and its subordinates is that it comes out after seven consecutive hits. Try to hit the rock as fast as you can when farming for gold ore.

After you collect your gold, you can sell it for 4,000 bells.

7. Turnips

Turnips are this game’s equivalent to the stock market. They can be bought from a boar named Joan every Sunday morning. Their value fluctuates throughout the week. If you hold onto a bundle for too long, it rots. Rotten turnips are worth next to nothing.

6. Native Perfect Fruit

Your local perfect fruit comes as a golden variety of your native fruit. The first day in your village always has one perfect fruit. Finding more perfect fruits involves shaking and planting more of your native fruit until you find one.

You can plant and sell these fruits for large profits. Each fruit sells for 600 bells. In a bundle of nine, they can sell for 5,400 bells.

5. Foreign Perfect Fruit

If you have access to a friend's town, you should try selling your perfect fruit. If you and your friend have different native fruits, the fruit will sell for 3,000 apiece. A bundle of perfect fruit can sell for 27,000 bells.

4. Whale Shark

The whale shark is a massive species that can be found during the summer months or on the island year-round. It sells for a whopping 13,000 bells apiece.

When fishing for these behemoths, look for a shadow with a fin. Collect a lot of these for a large sum of bells at Re-Tail.

The horned Hercules sell for the same value as the golden stag. Catch these using the same method for catching other valuable bugs. The island is your best bet for finding these creatures.

5.The Diagonal Bridge Map

The rarely used diagonal bridge map gives any town flare.

What’s Great About the Diagonal Bridge Map

It says it all in the name! This map is unique because of its slanted bridge crossing your towns river.
Some people are intimidated by this design due to the fact that making a path leading to the bridge may be difficult. However, if you are up to putting in the work, these bridges give a town some extra charm!
This map also sports what’s called a “private beach”. Meaning you may only get to the beach on the right by wearing a wet suit. Hope you swim well!

4. The Southern Double Beach

The most convenient of all maps!

What’s Great About the Southern Double Beach

This town has your two main buildings (Re-tail and Town hall) and your plaza tree on the southern part of your land. This makes it easy to go between the two to perform your mayorly duties! I prefer this layout so that any farming done on the island/beach can easily be sold at Re-tail or stored in your home.
This leaves you with plenty of designing space for the northern half of your town, giving you plenty of options for your Public Work Projects.
Lastly, this map gives you to almost equal sized beaches that BOTH have ramps to access them.

3. The Northern Double Beach

The most aesthetically pleasing map.

What’s Great About the Northern Double Beach

This map, similar to our #4 map, also has your two main buildings (Re-tail and Town hall) and your plaza tree all together. But, this time it is all on the northern half of your map. In addition, it lines up nicely with your campsite!
This leaves you with plenty of designing space for the southern half of your town, giving you plenty of options for your Public Work Projects.
This map also has the awesome double beach with ramps. The southern beach is much bigger, giving your second beach the “private beach” feel without the hassle of a wet suit.

2. The Plaza Tree Map

The centrally placed tree makes a great landscape for any town.

What’s Great About the Plaza Tree Map

This map (already occupied by a friend of mine) is super accessible! All your main town buildings are not bunched up together but are still all near each other. Being mayor has never been this simple!
This map includes THREE ponds! This gives you more chances to catch those frogs, crawfish, tadpoles, and pondskaters!
And last, but certainly not least, this map has your tree centered almost smack dab in the middle of your town. How beautiful is that?

1.The Straight and Narrow

Look at that beautifully straight river! No river bend here.

What’s Great About the Straight and Narrow

Here we are, our number 1 map! This map has something that almost every Animal Crossing New Leaf player wants and that’s a nearly straight river! This makes farming for rare river fish a breeze!
The Straight and Narrow map keeps the Town Hall, Re-tail, Plaza tree, ponds, and campsite all in line with each other. Giving you maximum space on your southern half to landscape to your heart’s content.
This map also features a double ramp long single beach and a fairly small private beach that can be accessed with a wet suit.
