Why Some New AAA Games Don't Deliver On Their Promises

A huge budget doesn’t necessarily make a great game

Ever since Call of Duty came out in 2003, it was the golden goose of the market, with a new sequel coming out practically every year. But after the first installment, has the core of the game changed that much? Not really. It just caters to its fanbase by giving it the same experience in a new outfit (aka updated graphics).

With the recent disappointment of Mass Effect: Andromeda, gamers are starting to realize that it’s not just the glitches and an unpolished product that’s causing most of the rage among its fans, its the story, or lack thereof.

Call of Duty: Ghosts took things in a new direction, problem is, it was the wrong direction.

Promises made, never kept

With games like Dragon Age 2 promising to continue the quality of the first game, but ultimately delivering a short, unvaried and watered down combat and lack of exploration, it’s no wonder some AAA developers try to sell a title simply on its name alone.

But with Steam being the leading platform in the world, refunds come in just as fast. So while some developers cut the development time in half and still expect the game to be a huge success, their hope of receiving a lot of revenue lies solely in pre-order sales.

Be it time constraints, the dumbing down of game mechanics to appease a larger crowd or the simple fact that an entire development team gets thrown out and replaced with another, some AAA developers can take a great installment in the series and totally ruin it with a sequel that has next to none of the qualities of its predecessor.

With cutscene after cutscene, the remaining amount of actual gameplay in this game is almost completely linear.

Take the time

With a couple of very successful crowdfunding titles out there already, AAA developers could take the time and learn a thing or two from them. If a game with 10% of the budget of an actual AAA title can deliver better gameplay and receive more praise, then AAA developers need to take a lesson or two on how its supposed to be done.

While popular AAA titles have a very anxious fanbase that eagerly awaits the next installment in the series, AAA developers should still take their time to deliver a polished product and listen to what their fans want instead of failing to deliver on their promises.

Far Cry 4 Director quits Ubisoft for new venture

A New Venture

Alex Hutchinson, veteran developer at Ubisoft announced his departure from the studio after working there for 7 years via twitter last week. Alex Hutchinson, who has helmed high profile titles like Far Cry 4 and Assassin’s Creed 3 followed up the announcement with the name of his new studio that he had founded along with a few other developers including the former EA and Warner Bros. Executive producer Reid Schneider.

"Extremely proud of all we achieved on Far Cry and Assassin's, but very excited to build something new," Hutchinson wrote and went on to reveal the name of the studio: Typhoon Studios."Probably won't have much to announce in the near future as we hire, build our studio, buy a coffee machine, and build Ikea furniture”, He said. Even though he didn’t mention any info on his first project, he did tease it a little by saying,“we are hard at work imagining a brand new world to inflict on all of you, so stay tuned."

A Short Look Into His Past

Alex Hutchinson has worked at Ubisoft for 7 years and has been an important part of some of their most successful franchises.

Before working at Ubisoft on titles such as Far Cry 4 and Assassin’s Creed, Alex Hutchinson previously had worked on games like Spore, Sims 2 and The Army of Two: The 40th Day. Needless to say, that is an amazing portfolio and we can only imagine his goals for his new company.

As you can expect this comes as great news for gamers everywhere as Far Cry 4 and Assassin’s Creed were amazing games, and having such a director start a studio of his own means that we can expect games that are greater In quality.

His Unique Stand On AAA Titles

Ubisoft has set itself apart from all other game developing giants by producing unique and innovative IPs.

Alex’s stand on AAA titles has been a controversial one, considering his statement back in 2012 where he compared the pursuit for AAA titles to a “kind of cancerous growth that will leave AAA blockbusters as nothing more than the last of the dinosaurs.” he also stated in 2013 that AAA titles are dying out.

His unique perspective only makes things more mysterious and has peaked the interest of the Gaming community. Will he end up pursuing this cancerous path of mainstream AAA titles or will he aim for a more indie approach? Either way, we can be sure that we will get quality games from such a director.
