Make no mistake, this game is not for the faint of heart, as you will be sifting through gory crime scenes that are sure to make you shudder. This game world is capital B, Brutal! And that’s saying something considering this is a zombie game. Characters are compelling and villains are ruthless and you’ll have to use everything in your arsenal to take out hordes of infected and a-holes alike. If you like mindless zombie action, with a compelling plot and love-to-hate type of action-movie villainy, then this will be one hell of a good and scary time.

9. Subnautica (PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, PS5)

Nothing like a deep, black ocean and the prospect of losing your breath that will raise your anxiety levels to unprecedented heights. You are stranded on an alien planet, forced to dive through the planet’s ocean to establish some kind of habitable order lest you end up sea fodder.

This is where beauty and horror commingle in one intoxicating experience. You’ll be forced to take on sea creatures, big and small, and craft resources to make sure you’re always prepared for the next fight. This is not a passive game, remember to keep your eyes and ears open at all times else you’ll end up somewhere much worse than a whale’s belly.

You'll have to dig lower and lower to the earth until you come across the greatest monsters known to man and you’ll have nothing but your wits and courage to get you out. Best of luck.

Risky move for sure, but it totally worked and now you do feel like this is one, grossed-out survival nightmare that you’re not likely to forget. If you plan to eat before putting this game in, be it at your own risk.

Gunplay is nicely refined for modern players and the atmosphere really sucks you into the dread of our two leads. If you like nature documentaries, then you are sure to appreciate what AWAY is going for here. The game is worth playing for the first 20 minutes alone as it shows off its allure and atmosphere. There’s some interesting ideas and fun set pieces that are worth checking out and this can certainly be the start of something truly special.

There’s a great sense of progress as you begin with limited resources and rack them up so that more of your clones can survive; it’s a pretty fresh take on the survival/horror/sci-fi genre.

A game that really makes you think about the scarcity of resources and picking your battles wisely. Vigor is an online survival shooter set in post-apocalyptic Norway where you are tasked with upgrading an abandoned shelter in order to survive the harsh environment.

You’re thrusted into a world where other online players scavenge for resources and you’re pretty much having to kill each other to do so. Wow, that’s not stressful at all. And be careful, if another player kills you, you lose everything you’ve collected to that point. It’s a real fight for survival when it ain’t AI against you, but players that match or even surpass your skill. Good luck.

11. Dead By Daylight (Xbox One, PS4, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, PC, PS5)

Here’s another online game utilized brilliantly, this time with a take on the old slasher genre. It’s about time games brought the thrill of an old Jason movie to the gaming platform and put players in the shoes of both victim and perpetrator. This is an innovative idea that paid off pretty well and gets your heart pumping harder than movie theatres ever could.

10. No Man’s Sky (Xbox One, PS4, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, PC, PS5)

While not always the favorite talk of the town, No Man’s Sky is still going strong so they must be doing something right. The initial innovation is not lost on players, where story is thin but having to survive an infinite, procedurally generated galaxies still has fans gripped.

Even 6 years later, No Man’s Sky still offers tons of cool rewards, upgrades and exhibitions. Maybe it’s not for everyone, but no online game has been able to provide fans with the sense of wonder and surprise you get from discovering literal new worlds. This is the closest you’ll get to the scary, survival mode Matthew McCounaughey felt in Interstellar, except it’s a bit more fun than what he had to go through. Thank God.

9. Among Us (Xbox One, PS4, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, PC, PS5)

Not all survival games need to be dire and bleak. Among Us is quite quirky and cute in its game design and an absolute blast when you start to get the hang of it. You play with other online crewmates trying to complete tasks on a spaceship while an “Imposter” tries to kill you in secret.

This game surprisingly knows how to build tension and suspense in the simple action of performing a task that takes the form of a fun minigame. Similar to Dead by Daylight the Imposter is also an online player that is forced to lie to the crew and the rest of you need to develop some serious sleuthing skills to prevent them from taking you out. Not sure if deceiving your friends should be as fun as it is, but hey, that reward of teamwork is here too.

8. Returnal (PS5)

If Alien met Groundhog Day, you’ve got Returnal. You play as an astronaut who crash lands on a planet that is, of course, infested with all sorts of wild aliens ready to destroy you and now it is up to you to survive and find your way out.

This is a great blend of horror/survival with classic Action/RPG where combat is fast and fun but leaves you at the edge of your seat, making sure you get it right before being “returned” to the beginning of the game. There’s plenty of good backstory and collectibles to find as you trek through this strange world all by your lonesome. Godspeed.

7. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Extraction (PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series, PC, PS5)

Man, did the aliens really have to bring a parasite with them?! You and up to three friends have to fly out to the infected zones where an alien parasite has broken out across the world.

These zones are beautifully disgusting as you duck and weave through collapsing streets and gooey, overgrown, parasitic monsters. The game definitely knows how to challenge players who are accustomed to these outbreak type scenarios, a game that really makes you earn your title of “survivor”.

6. Tribes of Midgard (PS4, PC, PS5)

Not many games combine survival with mythology, who knew they’d go together so well. You and your team are tasked with protecting the Seed of Yggdrasil from night invasions by Giants, hell-bent on destroying it.

You are a true Midgardian, having to venture beyond thy settlement to collect resources, thwart demons and upgrade thy town from the inevitable attacks by the Johtenar. Much like Dying Light, it’s best if you do your best work in the day, because nighttime is when things get real dicey, and you’ll have to put your all into taking down the minions of Hel that are relentless in their pursuit to take you down. You got this.

There’s nothing like a deep, black ocean and the prospect of losing your breath that will raise your anxiety levels to unprecedented heights. You are stranded on an alien planet, forced to dive through the planet’s ocean to establish some kind of habitable order lest you drown on an alien planet.

Yup, they did it again, and this time with a graphical upgrade. Now you play as a scientist who returns to the same planet from the original game in search of the research team that has gone missing.

This adventure is a lot more personal and emotional than the previous, as you are still expected to dive deep into the alien ocean and scrounge for resources to survive and build bases. The game is as beautiful as ever and there is much more at stake here as you uncover a dastardly plot that put you there to begin with. While the story is engaging, this is still a survival game where you are expected to use resources wisely. Don’t get lazy.

If this isn’t the ultimate survival story, God only knows what is. Turns out, the big, sprawling plot that was Horizon Zero Dawn was just the beginning of Aloy’s adventure. She must now venture to the Forbidden West in search for answers lest the land crumble and humanity is forever lost.

To say this game is breathtakingly gorgeous would be an understatement. Forbidden West improves on the first game in so many ways and if you thought the lore in the first game was dense, wait till you get a load of what’s in store for this new, epic chapter. Nothing like having to survive primitive tribes, Mother Nature, and the technological beasts that trample her lands. Is nothing safe anymore?

Imagine you drew a spooky cabin in the woods with pencil, then that nightmare came to life. Mundaun has you playing through an eerie, Swiss alps backdrop where you have to search for clues as to what happened to your grandfather before he burned to death.

This game is heavy on atmosphere, and pulls you in masterfully. You’ll be weaving through a desolate village where residents act strange as you uncover one disturbing and wrenching mystery. Whether the sepia aesthetic or the haunting music, Mundaun definitely knows how to creep you the hell out.

Well ain’t this a blast from the past? The world has been taken over by synthetic lifeforms, and it’s up to Shadow to uncover what has happened.

Upon looking at the game, you’d never think it was made in the last 25 years, but it shines as one of the best side-scrollers out there with smooth controls and big epic boss fights. Relive the 90’s with this indie gem.

Speaking of side-scrollers, here’s another for the indie classics, this time upgraded with 3D models. You play as a rabbit and former space pilot who needs to rise up against the robotic legion that has invaded Torch City.

There’s a surprising sense of harmony between the diverse layers of anthropomorphic space animals slashing and gliding their way through a chinese inspired, industrial backdrop. There’s a lot packed here in terms of level design, slick combat and stellar voice acting for an indie title from China that certainly deserves to be recognized.

If our last entry was a storybook, then this is more like a colouring book come to life. Beloved artist, Chicory, has gone missing and it’s up to you to pick up her brush and fill in the colours of the world.

While it would have been fun just colouring in the world on its own, Chicory cleverly uses it’s paintbrush theme as a puzzle tool and fills you with charm and wonder as you name your character after your favorite food. If that wasn’t enough, there is a compelling story here with rich themes of tackling mental health issues and you’re own inner critic. Who knew a live-action colouring book could be so deep?

9. Bugsnax (PS4, PC, PS5)

Another colourful, childrens-looking adventure with heavy themes of mental health and… climate change? You are a critter traversing the island of Snathtooth on the hunt of various species of bugsnax while also searching for your lost friend.

There’s a variety of fun and creative ways of discovering over 100 species of bugnsax and laying out traps for them to bring back to your camp. But this isn’t just a run-of-the-mill, cartoony adventure, as there is so much care put into the writing and character voices, you can tell just how passionate the developers were when crafting this adorably weird world.

8. Hades

Greek mythology meets anime meets dungeon crawler gameplay?! Sign me up! You play as Zagreus, the son of Hades himself, who must slash his way through hordes of demons in the underworld in order to surface up to the mortal realm.

There is a great variety of melee and projectile weapons that are super satisfying to weild and brunt with. If you’re a lover of Greek myth then you’ll love getting to know the iterations of such established characters like Nyx, Dusa, Hypnos and the one and only, Hades. The anime style is stellar to watch and there’s a neat, coming of age story that mixes well with Zagreus' snarky demeanor.

It’s like if James Cameron directed a Ridley Scott movie again, only you don’t get the safety of watching anymore, but having to do the fighting yourself. You’ve crashed landed on an alien world and forced to dive it's dangerous oceans for survival.

Nothing gets your heart pumping like being lost in a watery grave, especially on an alien planet. There are all sorts of monsters and predators ready to devour you, and you have to make sure you collect enough resources to stay alive. Even 8 years later, and this indie gem still knows how to keep you on your toes -- or flippers.

Like if Toy Story met Honey I Shrunk the Kids met… psychedelics? This is one trippy ride for a two player game and a whole lot of heart-warming fun. You (and perhaps a significant other) play as a married couple turned to dolls on an adventure to get back to reality.

Level design is super creative and a blast to traverse around, from giant bedrooms to lush gardens to outer space. There’s something special about having to work as a team and contemplate what it is to have a little give and take in a relationship like you would in a real marriage. Games like this prove that co-op gaming doesn’t have to die.

That time a really cool mod became its own video game. Having begun as a mod for Skyrim, The Forgotten City is a standalone adventure where you traverse the colourful characters of ancient Rome and the dark mystery they seem to carry.

The architecture is a huge departure from Skyrim as you are encased in the rich, golden structures of Rome. The plot is engaging and keeps you coming back for more, especially considering the moral dilemmas you’re having to weave through via such captivating characters. If you like indie ambitions and ancient backdrops, you’ll definitely want to check this out.

Want an indie tale with a whole lot of endearment, look no further than A Plague Tale: Innocence. You play as an older sister having to protect her young brother from war and plague during the Victorian era.

This game knows how to make you feel close to your characters, which bolsters your own personal motive for moving forward. You’ll start out as just a simpleton, no training, no weapons, no nothing, just your drive to survive and protect the one you love. Eventually you’ll grow into a capable warrior in this immersive and touching tale.

3. Disco Elysium (Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, PC, PS5)

Probably one of the most rewardingly rich indie games around. Disco Elysium has you playing as a detective, the type of detective of your choice, weaving through a war torn city full of mystery, misery, humor and deep dives into the macabre nature of the psyche.

There’s a great deal of RPG elements here used to masterful effect. The artwork is reminiscent of Picasso mixed in with noir-like atmosphere that really boosts the world DE is going for. And how’s this for a really ballsy game design? The game encourages dialogue over violence and yet still knows how to keep you engaged.

Don’t play this before going to bed. Little Nightmares II follows the events from the successful indie game, Little Nightmares, that has you traversing dark corners and ghoulish homesteads while everything tries to kill you.

Little Nightmares definitely knows how to create atmosphere and leave you longing for a bright and vibrant world. The character designs are creepy to say the least and will leave you cringing at their ghastly expressions. This is a dreadful game of hide and seek like you’ve never experienced.

Any indie game that manages to rival a triple A title like God of War definitely deserves commemoration. You play as Kena on a quest to aid spirits from moving on into the afterlife and save a forest village from an evil darkness.

While it may not have the polish of a triple A game, Kena’s smooth control scheme, wicked arsenal and swooning story is all you need to get lost in this whimsical adventure. Many games are rivaling Pixar studios and for an indie game to do that definitely puts it as one of the top indie games out there.

If you’re looking for that old school vibe on an old school disaster, Chernobylite brings that and more. Taking place years after the infamous Chernobyl catastrophe, Chernobylite invites players back to the scene to discover a world of insane and extra-terrestrial anomalies.

If you’ve ever wanted to see the aftermath of the nuclear disaster, this is as close as you’re gonna get in this horror/survivor FPS that weaves you through eerie radiation zones while dangerous bandits try to hunt you down. While not revolutionary in game design, stealth and action are super gratifying as you take down enemies and ramp up your stats as the days turn long.

No doubt great at establishing atmosphere, The Medium puts you in the thralls of, well, a medium, who can commune between two worlds, the world of the living and of the dead.

The game is set in a Polish backdrop where you explore the abandoned buildings once home to communists. What’s innovative here is the ability to play in both worlds simultaneously via split screen and solving puzzles of the dead as you trek through the spooky “otherworld” and unravel some mind bending mysteries that you’re sure to never forget.

Remedy has done it again with this new IP and it lives up well to what they’re known for. You play as Jesse, a telekinetic searching for her lost brother in the Federal Bureau of Control, a secret agency that investigates supernatural phenomena.

Rather than vampires or zombies, you’re dealing with trippy, ghostly and celestial forces trying to thwart your search at every turn. While not quite your classic horror, the empty halls of the bureau are eerie enough to make your hairs stand as you duck and weave through phantom enemies and uncover juicy secrets the bureau have been hiding. Happy hunting.

If the nighttime already makes you squeamish, this game may not be for you. You play as Aiden, a pilgrim in a post-apocalyptic world 15 years after a zombie outbreak.

In this intense, first-person, search mission, zombies can pop up at any moment and leave you squashed in their hordes if you’re not quick on your feet. The world of Villedor is a huge, open sprawl which can actually make things more intimidating. You’ll definity know how Will Smith felt in I Am Legend after this hair-raising adventure.

Stealth and upgrades are a rewarding experience as you refine your character through all of the creature encounters you’re bound to run into. When you’re heart is not pounding after bludgeoning a demon to death, there’s a rich world to explore and interesting characters to interact with.
