Any medium from horror may feature the best cast of characters and sport some of the most inventive deaths that the genre has ever seen, but those are all nothing without a memorable villain that will make your skin crawl.

So, let’s take a look at the Top 10 Horror Movie Villains We Want to See More Of.

10. Julia Cotton (Hellraiser)

Although most people may have forgotten, Julia was originally intended to serve as the Hellraiser franchise's recurring antagonist. She is a cruel, vicious villain who committed murders and went to hell out of passion, hence she is deserving of that title.

She had killed her own husband as a sacrifice for her other lover, returned from hell to commit murder once more, are just some of the few things that Julia had done.

Although Julia may not be as well-known and terrifying as the cenobites, she should still not be underestimated.

9. Esther (The Orphan)

Children are never a good sign in horror movies because they usually only appear to frighten the audience and the main characters, case in point, Esther of the Orphan franchise.

Esther may appear to be an innocent young girl, but don't be fooled - this little girl is capable of committing a number of sadistic acts, as evidenced by the fact that she has manipulated and murdered everybody who tries to stand in her way.

Esther's iconography was established after her plot twist in her debut film, which made us drop our jaws to the ground. The same is true for its prequel, First Kill, which took the franchise in an even more absurd route.

8. Pearl (X)

Ti West's newest outing is a surprising and shocking reinvention of the slasher genre, with it taking inspiration from the original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. However, in place of a skin-wearing maniac is a creepy old lady whose seeking fame.

Pearl managed to wreak havoc in two movies in her two outings released within the same year. From murdering her own family to killing a group of adult filmmakers, she will do anything to get what she deserves.

Pearl is one of the most grounded and promising slasher villains we have seen in recent years, and with the upcoming announcement of Maxxxine, the third installment in the trilogy, we are eager to see Pearl return.

7. The Mother (Barbarian)

Barbarian is one of 2022’s surprisingly refreshing entries, giving us many disturbing and uncomfortable moments, as well as hilarious ones that make it a film worth remembering. One of the film’s memorable elements was its villain, The Mother.

With such a grotesque appearance that it just wants to look away, The Mother never fails to make each of her scenes such an excruciating watch, especially with her initial appearance and the infamous breastfeeding scene.

And to think that The Mother is just one of the few monsters that house hides below its walls, we’re definitely excited to see what a sequel to Barbarian could bring us.

6. Kayako (Ju-On: The Grudge)

No matter how many movies and series are made about the infamous Japanese ghost duo, we just can never get enough of them. Ju-On’s Kayako provides some of the most traumatic and haunting moments ever seen in the genre. Their first appearance was in the short film Katasumi and 4444444444.

Kayako’s rage is something that no one ever in the franchise has ever managed to escape from. With 14 movies under its belt and not a single survivor in sight, it’s easy to say that Kayako is a force to be reckoned with.

Her ghoulish appearance and death rattle makes for such a haunting sight that will leave even the most die-hard horror fans traumatized. Along with her ghost son, Toshio, seeing these two might just scare you to death.

5. Tiffany Valentine (Bride of Chucky)

First appearing in 1998’s Bride of Chucky, as the girlfriend of the titular Chucky, played by Jennifer Tilly. Tiffany proves herself to be just as stylish and sadistic as her lover, for all the different reasons. However, deep within their urge to kill, Tiffany also longs for a happy family, giving her a bit of depth as a character.

Tiffany and Chucky have engaged in a lot of crazy things. From impregnating Jennifer Tilly and possessing her body, then later holding her captive in her own home trapped inside their switched body, to dismembering Nica’s limbs so that she couldn’t escape her.

And while her character in the second season of Chucky may have suffered by becoming a stumbling mess of a psycho, Jennifer Tilly's performance of the character still remains an enjoyable watch. Come on, we all know Tiffany also merits her own spin-off.

4. Art the Clown (Terrifier)

Clowns are already terrifying enough on their own, and the existence of Art the Clown further demonstrates this. Delivering us with one of the most disturbing and eerie depictions of a clown character ever seen in the genre. With no motivations, only darkness, Art the Clown might just become one of horror's modern icons.

From sawing a girl in half, eating a girl’s face, to keeping a girl alive only to then slowly kill her. Art the Clown has done lots of acts that even the evilest could not imagine.

Art’s appearance and menacing stares, together with the film’s masterful use of stinger, can easily make someone shiver Art has only just begun terrorizing the genre yet thousands are already traumatized, and everyone’s eager for his next film.

3. Freddy Kruger (A Nightmare on Elm Street)

Yes, Freddy Kruger may have gotten 9 films under his belt but we just can’t get enough of him. Murdering every child and teenager that has a connection to his past and death, Freddy is one evil nightmare you would want to wake up from.

Don’t be deceived by his wise-cracking jokes; Freddy is still a psychopath who can carve you up in creative ways, just like what he did to his previous victims. Killing them all while they’re vulnerable in their sleep.

Sure, Jason may be powerful and Michael Myers may be menacing, but Freddy remains one of the horror icons that we just want to see keep on coming owing to his devilishly hilarious and iconic one-liners and dreamlike kills.

2. Pinhead (Hellraiser)

Although Pinhead may have appeared in a dozen of Hellraiser films, he was never really the central focus after Hellraiser: Bloodline, the final film in the franchise that was written to be an actual sequel. As a character, Pinhead doesn’t exactly have any motive, instead, he plays the role of an angel to some and a demon to others for those who solve the infamous puzzle box’s configuration.

Despite being a powerful being, however, Pinhead was originally a human before becoming one of the cenobites. And following his ascension, he would then send those who solve the box into a world full of pleasure and suffering, leading to many creative and unthinkable deaths across the franchise.

And with an excellent portrayal by Doug Bradley, Pinhead is solidified as one of the genre’s best villains. And is one that we’d love to see more in other Hellraiser films.

1. Carrie White (Carrie)

What separates Carrie White from other movie villains on the list is that she isn’t some psychopath who kills for fun nor a supernatural creature from hell, but rather a sympathetic and misunderstood girl who was mistreated by everyone around her.

However sympathetic Carrie may be though, she is fondly remembered most for causing a massacre at her high school prom after witnessing her date, Tommy, dies from an accident in front of her. And here is where she lets her powers loose and kills everyone who stands in her way.

Carrie’s story is such a timeless classic that every single rendition of it, whether it be the 2002 adaptation or the 2013 remake, still strongly evokes a sense of sympathy. And it's the kind of feeling that no other characters on the list can ever match.

15 Horror Movies That Need a Reboot

Seeing a horror movie with such promising potential is such a rare sight these days, making it all the more tragic when that potential isn't realized or, even worse, when there are no more sequels. These exciting flicks might only make a stunning comeback with the aid of movie reboots.

And no other movie deserves a reboot, other than these 15 horror movies on the list.

15. Leprechaun (1993)

Leprechaun follows Tory (Jennifer Aniston) along with a group of other survivors as they are terrorized by the titular evil creature, Leprechaun, in search of his beloved pot of gold.

The Leprechaun franchise has received two, three if you count Into the Hood, reboots. It’s a franchise so cheesy yet charming at the same time, one that isn’t afraid to poke fun at everything. Although none of the films in the franchise are ever really that great in the franchise, they are all still worthy films to watch.

However, this doesn’t need to be the case anymore. Maybe if a reboot were to be released today, not only will it deliver laughs, but as well as genuine scares. This might just help solidify the Leprechaun franchise as a solid entry in the horror genre.

14. Splinter (2008)

Trapped in an isolated gas station by a voracious Splinter parasite that transforms its still-living victims into deadly hosts, a young couple and an escaped convict must find a way to work together to survive this primal terror.

Splinter provided the thrills, chills, and creativity in the familiar zombie subgenre. It’s a film that delivers intensity from beginning to end, and many disgusting-looking creatures make each scene hard to watch and stomach.

The film’s only issue being its frantic camera movement which makes viewing the film’s gnarly scenes kind of a bit not understandable. But hey, maybe with a proper reboot, not only will this issue be remedied but some of the most intense moments seen in its forerunner might just return.

13. Stay Alive (2006)

For a group of teens, the answer to the mysterious death of their old friend lies within the world of an online video game based on the true story of an ancient noblewoman known as the Blood Countess.

Stay Alive is one of those cheesy 2000s horror films that time had forgotten, and it’s a shame because the film’s premise is just as relevant as ever. Giving us an immersive viewing experience that aims to deliver horror in the real world and in a virtual world.

Maybe with a reboot, every improvement that the gaming industry had implemented might just be used to great effect, along with taking influence from many digital horror films to provide us with one of the most memorable horror movies in recent memory.

12. Saw (2004)

Two strangers awaken in a room with no recollection of how they got there, and soon discover they're pawns in a deadly game perpetrated by a notorious serial killer named Jigsaw.

While the Saw franchise may still be receiving multiple sequels, with its most recent installment being Spiral, released in 2021. However alive it may be though, it can’t be denied that the franchise had become very much convoluted with its so many unnecessary sequels and plot twists.

Jigsaw, which was a pseudo reboot of its own, almost manage to provide us with a decent simplification of the horrific games, however, what we truly need is a reboot that starts from scratch. A film that would disregard those plot twist after plot twist, to create an atmospheric entry that’s more akin to its first film.

11. Cold Prey (2006)

Five young Norwegians head up to the mountains to snowboard. One breaks his leg and it's getting dark soon, so they spend the night in a big, abandoned hotel, that closed 30 years ago. They are not alone.

Cold Prey is one of those overlooked foreign slasher films that just never got the recognition that it rightfully deserves. A film that packs in many brutal and creative kills, a refreshing setting, and a menacing killer. What simply could you ask for in a slasher?

Well, unfortunately, the franchise’s final film was back in 2010, with no other news of a new film after it. Just imagine a new entry, one that is more brutal than had come before, and maybe a possible English entry, one that will bring the franchise into the mainstream.

10. The Descent (2005)

A caving expedition goes horribly wrong, as a group of female explorers become trapped and ultimately pursued by a strange breed of predators.

The Descent is one of those films that just never fails to make you feel unnerved thanks largely to its outstanding atmosphere, creepy monster design, and claustrophobic setting that will make anyone afraid of dark and tight places.

It’s a shame however that the sequel that it did spawn ended up tarnishing what made its forerunner great, giving us a lesser experience that ended up being underwhelming. Now, this time would just be the perfect time to release a reboot of sorts where the events of the second film would be disregarded in favor of a more polished sequel.

9. Cherry Falls (2000)

In the small town of Cherry Falls, a psychotic murderer is killing off the virgins of the local high school. And in the hopes of stopping the killings, the teenagers decided to plan a sex party to avoid the serial killer.

Cherry Falls was released after Scream’s meta influence had pretty much become stale which was the reason as to why this film isn’t really as recognized as the other greats in the genre. And it’s a shame because Cherry Falls is a really great slasher film that takes a hilarious new spin on the familiar setup.

Though its concept may prove to be controversial in today’s times, with a little bit of tweaking, we might just see another creative slasher film released in this era. One that will rival Scream’s own sequel/reboot.

8. Day of the Dead (1985)

The third entry in Romero’s Dead franchise, follows a group of scientists and military personnel sheltering in an underground bunker in Florida, hiding from the undead horde.

Three of Romero’s classics had already received their own remakes, with the two, Night and Dawn being some of the best examples of a remake done right. Day of the Dead, however, seems to always stumble, whether it be its remakes or sequel, the film just never really got the retelling that it deserves.

Maybe with another shot, we might just get the definitive Day of the Dead experience. A reboot that would get what makes its predecessor such a great and thought-provoking film in the first place.

7. Final Destination (2000)

Alex Browning is among a group of high school students readying themselves for a trip to Europe. When he suddenly has a premonition their airplane will crash, he screams to warn the others but instead he is thrown off of the plane along with others, but the plane crashes after they get off. Weeks later one of the survivors mysteriously dies, and Alex realizes that things just got more complex.

Final Destination is one of the most clever and original horror films to ever come out in the 2000s, delivering us four excellent films (we don’t talk about the fourth entry) that make excellent use of mundane events to create fear.

The franchise’s final entry was back in 2011 and after that, we’ve just been dying to see more creative kills and visions. With a proper reboot, everything that made its original great could be taken and further pushed to the next level to give us an unforgettable film.

6. The Return of the Living Dead (1985)

When two bumbling employees at a medical supply warehouse accidentally release a deadly gas into the air, the vapors cause the dead to rise again as zombies.

The Return of Living Dead brought humor, intensity, and originality to the familiar zombie genre. As a result, we got one of the most iconic films about these undead. Despite having a strong first outing, however, the film was turned into a franchise, an undead one that is, one that seems to only get worse with each entry.

A modern reboot of the franchise would simply be perfect in today’s era. A film that would provide a much-needed refreshing take on the zombie sub-genre, as well as give us a likable cast of characters that you’ll grow to love.

5. Friday the 13th (1980)

A group of camp counselors trying to reopen a summer camp called Crystal Lake, which has a grim past, are stalked by a mysterious killer.

Bloody, sexy, and purely absurd are just some of the words to describe the Friday the 13th franchise. The franchise had taken numerous directions before, from being a murder mystery, going to L.A., to even exploring space, all with varying success.

Now is finally the time though to go back and explore the woods of Camp Crystal Lake. A film that would take the franchise back to basics, with Jason terrorizing camp counselors once more and no gimmick insights.

4. Jaws (1975)

When a killer shark unleashes chaos on a beach community off Cape Cod, it's up to a local sheriff, a marine biologist, and an old seafarer to hunt the beast down.

It’s been a long time since horror movies about wild animals have truly been able to provide genuine scares and thrills. One notable film of this caliber would be 1975’s Jaws, a film that made everyone back in its day, scared of water.

A modern reboot that aims to do this would be incredible as well, making us once again afraid of what lurks in a such safe place and once again providing fear to a real living creature, and not an imaginary one. We simply couldn’t wait for this to happen.

3. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

The movie follows Nancy Thompson who must uncover the dark truth concealed by her parents after she and her friends become targets of the spirit of a serial killer with a bladed glove in their dreams, in which if they die, it kills them in real life.

Remember the time when A Nightmare on Elm Street dominated not only the market but the horror genre as well? Giving us 9 outstanding horror films that explore horrific and visually mesmerizing nightmares and an iconic slasher in the shape of Freddy Krueger.

Unfortunately, the franchise seems to have died out, but maybe it doesn’t have to stay that way with a release of a reboot. A film that would take the same approach as 2018’s Halloween, ignoring the unnecessary sequels to create a new timeline with a grittier and more brutal iteration of the characters.

2. Alien (1979)

The crew of a commercial spacecraft encounter a deadly lifeform after investigating an unknown transmission. Now, they must try to survive the grip of this unknown creature who lurks on their ship.

Many horror films set in space have tried to recapture the magic that the Alien franchise has established, however, none has managed to ever come close to it, including the franchise’s later sequels. The first two films are an incredible trek to space, giving us both horror and action, combined with science fiction, to create an iconic film.

Considering how modern technology has come since the release of the first film, maybe with a proper reboot, we might just rediscover again the horror in space. A film that would take advantage of mesmerizing contemporary effects, along with erasing the films that had tarnished the otherwise strong name of the Alien franchise.

1. Psycho (1960)

Phoenix secretary, Marion Crane, embezzles $40,000 from her employer's client, goes on the run and checks into a remote motel run by a young man under the domination of his mother. Only to discover a dark secret deep within the confines of his home.

Psycho is one of the grandfathers of the slasher genre and helped establish many tropes that are still being used ‘til today. And its many sequels, while may not be as strong as its original, are still worth watching.

The franchise did receive a reboot of sorts before in the shape of Bates Motel, a psychological drama series, however, while incredible in its own right, it’s not really horror. Now is just the perfect time to release a reboot of the franchise, one that will scare and surprise the audiences as it did back in its release.

What Made Freddy Krueger An Evil Killer (Story Behind Freddy Krueger )

Freddy Krueger, played by the iconic Robert Englund, is a character best known for his quirky one-liners. It’s no secret that Freddy is a top dog in the horror genre, right up there with other well-known characters such as Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, and Leatherface. One of the kings of 80s horror, the main antagonist of the Nightmare on Elm Street series can be found practically everywhere. But with such an iconic character, one might ask why his character became one of the most vile villains of the 80s.

The Beginning of Nightmares

The mother of Freddy Krueger, Amanda Krueger

Amanda Krueger’s first assignment as a nun was to care for the inmates of Westin Hills hospital. Days before Christmas, she was locked in the hospital by the guards who were all in a hurry to get home to their families. Unfortunately, this led to the sexual assault of Amanda Krueger by several of the inmates, and nine months later, her son was born.

Her son was given up for adoption, and an alcoholic abuser named Mr. Underwood would take the child, whose name would be Freddy.

The Early Days

While Freddy lived with Mr. Underwood, he suffered from an immense amount of abuse from his adoptive “father.” School was no escape either, as he was also bullied by his classmates and frequently outcasted. Due to this all, Freddy began showing the signs of a troubled child, killing small animals and even harming himself. This would all eventually lead to Mr. Underwood being Freddy’s first murder after he finally snapped.

Blending In

As an adult, Freddy would marry a woman named Loretta. The two would have a daughter together named Kathryn. While all seemed normal, Freddy had already begun his child slashing sprees throughout Springwood. Loretta would eventually find out about this, stumbling across his weapons of torture and confronting him. However, this confrontation only led to her death, as Freddy would kill her.

Kathyrn, sadly, would see the entire murder take place, and although she promised her father she wouldn’t tell anyone, he would be soon after be arrested.

Although apprehended, Freddy would be released from prison on a technicality. His mother, Amanda, who had been following the case, would die of suicide shortly after his release. The parents of Springwood were not too happy about this outcome, tracking the killer down and finding him in the infamous boiler room where he had taken his victims. The parents would pour gasoline everywhere and set the place on fire with Freddy in it, leaving him to die in the flames.

The fire, of course, didn’t kill the Springwood Slasher for good. Freddy would be reborn from the fire, becoming the demon of dreams. He would stalk the dreams of the children whose parents killed him, taking their lives as revenge. Freddy, hellbent on power and vengeance, would make sure to make everybody pay for his death.

It was Wes Craven who instilled in you a fear of bedtime,, and if it weren't for him, there would be no Scream franchise. He's done so much to influence horror movies that it can be hard to choose which ones are better than others.

We've put together a list of all his films ranked from worst to best!

26. The Fireworks Woman (1975)

The sexual exploits of a girl who’s fallen in love with her brother, who decides to join the priesthood.

Hardcore porn was Wes Craven's follow-up to THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT (1972). It is marketed to women as both, a free love journey and hardcore porn, but it also emphasises explicit sex. Sadly, the movie has been awkwardly spliced and sliced up, with bizarre comic scenes like a man smacking another man with a fish. However, aside from the violent sequences, these various editing techniques render the movie incomprehensible in several places. Under the name Abe Snake, Craven also makes an appearance in the movie as an enigmatic stranger who might perhaps be the Devil. It’s worth a watch, if you can find it.

25. Freddy Vs Jason (2003)

The antagonists of this eerie film are two horror icons. Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund), a disfigured serial murderer who preys on his victims in their nightmares, has lost a lot of his influence as a result of the locals in his town losing their fear of him. Freddy plans a new murdering spree with the aid of fellow violent murderer Jason Voorhees (Ken Kirzinger). However, the two ghouls begin to engage in combat when the hockey-mask-wearing psychopath won't stop hacking up Freddy's intended victims.

Although it may not be a timeless classic, it is preferable to being poked in the eye with a pointed object.

However, when Bobby and Ruby travel to the desert with motorcyclists they're supporting and Ruby's family makes a reappearance to kill once again, the past rages back.

There are a few unsettling moments, just enough to occasionally make things spooky, but ultimately not enough for anyone to even possibly call this a decent horror.

22. Scream 2 (1997)

The events of the first "Scream" were survived by Sydney (Neve Campbell) and tabloid reporter Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox), but their horror continues. A copycat killer is on the run when two college students are killed at a sneak viewing of "Stab," a movie based on the events of the first film. Before they all perish, Sydney and Gail, as well as other survivors Deputy Dewey (David Arquette) and Randy (Jamie Kennedy), must figure out who is responsible for this latest murder spree.

Clever spoof of the original; once more, we get to see a film make fun of its own rules. It has some hilarious and horrifying moments, but it suffers from being less inventive than the original.

It has been a long time since the Woodsboro town was terrorised by the Ghostface Killer. Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), who experienced those terrible events, has created a self-help book to assist her move past the trauma. But Sidney's arrival also prompts Ghostface to make a comeback, putting Sidney and everyone she cares about in peril.

Leveraging the technical advancements of the past ten years and society's celebrity-obsessed culture, the series has taken the concepts of the original movie and turned them inside out. Even though this was a relatively good sequel it was lacking in the typical frights that would make you jump out of your seat.

In addition to the little pleasure of squandering a few minutes watching television history, the ridiculous, pulpy nature of the events also provides some small satisfaction.

I enjoyed this made-for-TV film about a body being revived after being cryogenically preserved. Wes Craven, the director of this effort, is unlikely to win over many fans of his past movies, the most of which feature a lot of blood and violence.

After ten years, however, the programme is abruptly terminated due to budget constraints; as a result, Roberta, Williams, and her former students strive to organise a fundraising performance.

Meryl controls the narrative. Despite its educational intentions, the movie simply becomes about seeing her perform as she effortlessly vanishes into the part.

15. Swamp Thing (1982)

Altruistic botanist Dr. Alec Holland (Ray Wise) is placed under the protection of special government agent Alice Cable as he approaches a breakthrough in his mission to end world hunger (Adrienne Barbeau). While trying to take Holland's findings for his own evil purposes, mad scientist Anton Arcane (Louis Jourdan) accidentally transforms Holland into the Swamp Thing, a massive plant-like creature who fights back against Arcane's goons in order to save Cable.

Craven tries to adapt this "veggie-man" horror to fit the DC Comics aesthetic, and with Adrienne Barbeau (Mrs. John Carpenter) playing the Thing's object of desire and Louis Jourdan playing the arch-villain "Arcane," he's obviously on the right track.

14. Night Visions (1990)

Wes Craven, the master of horror, is the director of the obscure made-for-TV film Night Visions. It appears to have been a pilot for a potential TV series, which unsurprisingly never transpired, and has since been forgotten. Night Visions is in fact a forgettable snooze and is dull in the sense that only US-made television programming can be.

13. The Hills Have Eyes (1977)

Here, Craven's repressed nasty side is fully unleashed, and the rudest shocks seem to be focused on the parents of the "nice" family.

12. Red Eye (2005)

Hotel manager Lisa Reisert (Rachel McAdams), who had attended her grandmother's funeral, is waiting to board a flight back home when she encounters handsome Jackson Rippner (Cillian Murphy) at check-in. Jackson wants to kill the Homeland Security chief, but to do so, Lisa must change the official's room number at her hotel. Jackson has taken Lisa's father as security (Brian Cox).

The 85-minute flight is gratifyingly short, the psychological mind games are performed to the hilt, and the pressurised cabin air heightens the edge-of-your-seat stress. Definitely worth a watch.

11. The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988)

Dennis solves the dangerous puzzle with the aid of a witch doctor (Brent Jennings) and a colleague researcher (Cathy Tyson). Dennis must avoid the Haitian authorities, who see his research as a potential threat, as he unravels the mysteries of the enigmatic powder.

We become entangled in Pullman's battle in this psychological thriller/horror hybrid, and as things get worse for him, the audience remains committed and confident he will triumph against the horrors around him.

10. Last House on the Left (1972)

Mari (Sandra Cassel) and Phyllis (Lucy Grantham), two teenagers, travel to the city for a performance before hunting for drugs later. Instead, they come across a group of escaped prisoners who rape and torment them for the duration of the night. Then, not understanding the girls were close to Mari's house, the gang murders them in the woods. They fool Mari's mother (Cynthia Carr) and father (Gaylord St. James) into believing they are salesmen, but it doesn't take long for the parents to figure out their true identities and hatch a plan of retaliation.

A stern, sour little snooze that's approximately four times better than you'd anticipate.

9. The People Under the Stairs (1991)

Fool encounters the psychopaths' daughter, Alice (A.J. Langer), who has been spared any harsh punishment by her insane parents, as he tries to flee before the psychopaths can find him. Will Fool and Alice be able to flee in time?

Although there is some blood and gore in the new film, it is largely spooky and, given the unusual circumstances, surprisingly hilarious.

8. Cursed (2005)

Hollywood history will forever remember "Cursed" for its horrific production issues. Over a year of delays, extensive reshoots, recasting, rewrites, and essentially anything else that could go wrong did. Consider the fact that Craven and Williamson were still able to make an enjoyable movie a testament to their abilities as a filmmaker and a writer.

Wes Craven's Shocker, a mix of his most ambitious concepts & a ferociously crazy visual style, is undoubtedly one of his more eccentric cult favourites. It feels like a frenetic fever dream powered by the might of righteous heavy metal.

I thought this movie was funny. Not frightening at all.. The plot wasn't too bad either..

Craven has had a remarkable career in the horror genre, and he’s an absolute legend in the industry. He’s made some of the most iconic films of all time, but also some disappointments too. Overall, Craven's movies are what define him as one of Hollywood's most important directors. And I for one can’t wait to see what he comes up with next.

[Top 5] Dead By Daylight Best Quentin Smith Builds

So, you are looking for some Quentin Smith builds. Unfortunately,you are going to be in for a tough time. Quentin Smith has some of the least used, and most underwhelming teachable perks out of all of the survivors. Nevertheless, let’s jump into some builds for our sleepy friend, Quentin Smith.

5. “Infinite” Sprint Burst

The Infinite Sprint Burst Build - Dead By Daylight

The “Infinite” Sprint Burst build is going to be a pretty cookie-cutter build for most builds trying to utilize Quentin’s perks, so you should get used to seeing at least a few of these perks in the rest of the builds.

The idea of this build is to use Quentin’s teachable perk, Vigil, to get rid of the exhaustion status effect as fast as possible. Any time you use an exhaustion perk, such as Sprint Burst in this build, you will become exhausted. The tricky part is that you can not recover from exhaustion if you are running. That is where Fixated comes in.

With Fixated, you can walk around up to 20% faster, allowing you to walk between objectives so you can allow your exhaustion timer to go down. Also, if you have Sprint Burst ready to go, you can walk around faster if you want to save Sprint Burst for when the killer spots you and starts to chase.

The use of Iron Will is to try to sneak away from the killer while you are injured. Unfortunately, Quentin Smith has marginally louder cries of pain than other survivors, making it easier to spot him, so the choice of Iron Will is mostly to mitigate that as much as possible.

What the “Infinite” Sprint Burst Build Excels In:

Having Sprint Burst available as much as possible.
Faster walking while recharging Sprint Burst.

Perks Used:

Sprint Burst: When starting to run, break into a sprint at 150% of your normal running speed for a maximum of 3 seconds.

Sprint Burst causes the Exhausted status effect for 60/50/40 seconds.
Sprint Burst cannot be used while Exhausted.

Vigil: You recover 10/15/20% faster from the Blindness, Exhaustion, Haemorrhage, and Hindered Status Effects.

This effect also applies to all other Survivors within 8 meters of you and lingers for 15 seconds.

Fixated: You walk 10/15/20% faster and can see your Scratch Marks.

Iron Will: When injured, Grunts of Pain are reduced by 50/75/100%.

4. “Unlimited” Dead Hard

Unlimited Dead Hard With Vigil

The “Unlimited” Dead Hard build is generally the same idea as the “Infinite” Sprint Burst build. You use Vigil to lessen your exhaustion time allowing you to use Dead Hard more often.

Unlike the “Infinite” Sprint Burst Build, you do not need to walk around trying to save your exhaustion perk. You will only ever be able to use your exhaustion perk, Dead Hard, while you are in a chase, so if you aren’t in danger at all and aren’t exhausted, you are free to run between objectives as much as you please.

The use of Resilience somewhat incentivizes you to stay injured. However, I would argue if you have the opportunity to heal, it would be better to do so, unless you are up against a killer with a one-hit down ability. If you do decide to stay injured, however, you have the extra action speed from Resilience allowing you to do objectives quicker, as well as having Dead Hard available to you whenever, as long as you aren’t exhausted.

Iron Will has a better use here rather than in the previous build if you intend on staying injured for a majority of the time to take advantage of Resilience.

What the “Unlimited” Dead Hard Build Excels In:

Having Dead Hard available as much as possible.
Lessens the need to be healed by giving you incentives for being injured.

Perks Used:

Vigil: You recover 10/15/20% faster from the Blindness, Exhaustion, Haemorrhage, and Hindered Status Effects.

This effect also applies to all other Survivors within 8 meters of you and lingers for 15 seconds.

Dead Hard: When Injured, tap into your adrenaline bank and dash forward quickly to avoid damage.

Press the Active Ability button while running to dash forward.
Avoid any damage during the Dash.
Dead Hard causes the Exhausted Status Effect for 60/50/40 seconds.
Dead Hard cannot be used when Exhausted.

Resilience: When injured, your Action speeds in Repairing, Healing, Sabotaging, Unhooking, Vaulting, Cleansing, Opening, and Unlocking are increased by 3/6/9%.

Iron Will: When injured, Grunts of Pain are reduced by 50/75/100%.

3. Exit Gate Speed Build

The Ultimate Exit Gate Speed Build

The Exit Gate Speed Build is somewhat of a joke idea, and that is to open the exit gate as fast as possible, which is already a relatively quick task. However, this build does have other uses, other than Quentin’s teachable perk Wake Up.

First, let’s talk about the goal of the build itself and how it works. With Wake Up, you see the aura of all of the Exit Gates, and while you are working on it, other survivors can see the aura as well, which can be helpful to people who may have not paid attention to the quick flash when all the generators were finished, as well as letting people know that the door you are working on will probably be open by the time they get to it. Finally, Wake Up also makes you open the exit gate 15% faster. That mixed with the extra 9% speed from Resilience and the possible 6% speed from Spine Chill, that is a potential of 30% faster opening of the exit gate. However, more likely to have 24% as you typically won’t have the killer staring at you while opening the gate.

Now, let’s get into the added benefits of running the Exit Gate Speed Build. This is a build-on of the Fast Vault Build, as some people call it. The Fast Vault Build consists of Spine Chill and Resilience. While you are being chased by the killer, if you are injured, which is bound to happen at some point, you will be able to vault through windows 15% faster, considering that the killer will be looking at you while chasing you to give you Spine Chill. While 15% may not sound like much, it can save you from being hit through the window fairly often.

Along with the benefits of faster vaulting, you also still have Sprint Burst as an option for you. Whether you want to use that to get to objectives faster, or when the final generator finishes, to get to the exit gate as fast as possible, or for getting more distance from the killer when they spot you, it is just a great perk to have. Which ends up making this build fairly well-rounded.

What the Exit Gate Speed Build Excels In:

Opening the Exit Gate as fast as possible.
Some quick action speeds with Spine Chill and Resilience.
Reasonable safe chases with Sprint Burst, and fast vaulting from Spine Chill and Resilience.

Perks Used:

Sprint Burst: When starting to run, break into a sprint at 150% of your normal running speed for a maximum of 3 seconds.

Sprint Burst causes the Exhausted status effect for 60/50/40 seconds.
Sprint Burst cannot be used while Exhausted.

Resilience: When injured, your Action speeds in Repairing, Healing, Sabotaging, Unhooking, Vaulting, Cleansing, Opening, and Unlocking are increased by 3/6/9%.

Spine Chill: Whenever the Killer is looking in your direction when within 36 meters of you, Spine Chill activates:

Skill Check Trigger odds are increased by 10%.
Skill Check Success zones are reduced by 10%.
Your Action speeds in Repairing, Healing, Sabotaging, Unhooking, Vaulting, Cleansing, Opening, and Unlocking are increased by 2/4/6%.

Wake Up: Once all Generators are completed, Wake Up activates:

The Auras of the Exit Gate Switches are revealed to you within 128 meters.
When opening an Exit Gate, your Aura is revealed to all other Survivors within 128 meters.

2. Item Hunting

ITEM HUNT! PT.3 | Dead By Daylight LEGACY SURVIVOR PERK BUILDS

The Item Hunting Build’s main purpose is, you guessed it, hunting for items while in the game. Whenever you spawn into the game, there are at least 3 chests throughout the map. This build makes it easier to find those chests, faster to open them, and provides you with more, and better quality, items.

Plunderer’s Instinct helps you find the chests you are looking for, otherwise, they may be hard to spot without it. Ace in the Hole allows you to have Add-Ons on those items you find (normally the items you get do not have add-ons included with them), as well as keeping those add-ons if you escape (while without it you will keep the item but lose the add-ons.) Quentin’s teachable Pharmacy helps you open those chests faster, as well as guaranteeing a green med-kit on your first chest search.

Other than this, there isn’t much to the build. The whole point is to just find items, if there is one you don’t want, you can drop it and leave it, or try to find another survivor and drop it off for them to use. Since Plunderer’s Instinct allows you to find higher rarity items in chests, you have a better chance of finding a Key, which can open the hatch if it is spawned, allowing you to escape the match prematurely, which is a pretty solid strategy.

What the Item Hunting Build Excels In:

Finding high-quality items.
Keeping add-ons after escaping the trial.
Possibility of finding a key for an easy escape.

Perks Used:

Plunderer’s Instinct: The Auras of closed Chests and dropped Items throughout the Trial Grounds are revealed to you within 16/24/32 meters.

Grants a considerably better chance at finding an Item of a higher Rarity from Chests.

Ace in the Hole: When retrieving an item from a Chest, there is a chance an Add-on will be attached to it.

100% chance for an Add-on of Very Rare Rarity or lower.
10/25/50% chance for a second Add-on of Uncommon Rarity or lower.
Ace in the Hole allows you to keep any Add-ons your Item has equipped upon escaping.

Pharmacy: You have a knack for finding medicine.

Unlocking Chests is 40/60/80% faster.
Unlocking your first Chest guarantees an Emergency Med-Kit.
Pharmacy reduces the audible range of your Chest-unlocking noises by 8 meters.

*Appraisal: Start the Trial with 3 Tokens:

When a Chest has already been opened, consume 1 Token to rummage through it for an item.
Rummage through Chests 40/60/80% faster.
Rummaging is only available once per Chest.

*In the video instead of Appraisal they used Up The Ante. However Up The Ante does increase luck, we eventually learned that luck itself does not affect items you find in chests. So for the purpose of the build, we took the perk out for Appraisal, which allows you to get even more items from chests.

1. The Quentin Smith

Let’s be honest here, finding good synergies with Quentin’s perks is a challenge, to say the least. Maybe we need to take a step back and figure out what makes Quentin tick. So I went to visit a fellow Quentin enthusiast, Yerv. While watching Yerv’s videos I started to ask myself, why are we trying to find builds that work with Quentin, when we can just be Quentin?

That is why for The Quentin Smith we are using all 3 of his teachable perks; Pharmacy, Wake Up, and Vigil. For the last slot, we just throw in a Sprint Burst because, well we need to show off Vigil somehow! Also, it helps us get to that Exit Gate even sooner for us to open.

Overall, is this the best build you can run? No, not by a long shot. But you do get some decent options with it. You get a free med-kit, which gives you points for searching a chest, and then a fast heal. A quicker escape with Wake Up which can come in clutch some matches. And lastly, you get some more uses of Sprint Burst which has never hurt anybody. Do you want to be a meta perk gamer, playing the same 4 perks over again, or do you want to be the sleepy boy himself, Quentin Smith?

What The Quentin Smith Excels In:

Having Sprint Burst available as much as possible.
Open Exit Gates fast.
A fast heal with Pharmacy.
You get to be THE Quentin Smith.

Perks Used:

Two men that haunt the nightmares of their foes. Batman, the Dark Knight, and Freddy Krueger, the Dream Demon that haunts the nightmares of his victims on Elm Street. Only one can win. Can Bruce beat the burned serial killer, or will he never wake up again?

Batman Powers And Abilities

Last I heard, Batman was the defender of the night, not the defender of nightmares.

He stalks the criminals of the night, saves Gotham in times of peril, and has put plenty of supervillains away. He is Batman. Juggling the life of billionaire playboy, Bruce Wayne, and the crime-fighting vigilante, Batman, by night. The biggest mystery is how he finds time to sleep.

One of the founders of the Justice League, and father to the Bat-Family, the DC Universe has been impacted greatly through his feats. He’s ready to take on any challenge, with contingency plans upon contingency plans for any scenario he can think of.

What Batman lacks in superpowers, he makes up for by being the smartest, fastest, and strongest human alive. Batman made himself without the use of powers or drugs, only his determination, and will. There’s not a criminal, a crooked cop, or supervillain that doesn’t fear Batman.

Freddy Krueger Powers And Abilities

It's his dream come true to kill people in their dreams.

When you see his iconic clawed glove in your dream, it’s time to run. The damned soul of a serial killer who just can’t stop what he loves to do so much. Freddy haunts the nightmares of his victims and murders them in their sleep.

After being burned to death by the parents of the children he was hurting, his fiery ghost wasn’t done. Turning into a dream demon, the Springwood Slasher killed plenty more people since he’s died, but that’s not all. Fighting killers such as Jason Vorhees, he’s no stranger to a bit of a mashup.

Wielding his bladed work glove, he’ll slash you to pieces while you’re sound asleep. You never want to be caught in one of his nightmares.

How the Battle Would Go Down

There are a lot of factors that go into play here. Batman is a master tactician, so if he has time to plan that could give him an advantage versus if he is just simply dropped into a fight. Freddy also could have an advantage depending on if they are fighting in the dream world or real world. To make things interesting, the scenario is going to be taking place in the dream world, but Batman has had a day to prepare himself and do some research on his opponent.

I assume Batman would spend the entire day learning about Freddy Kruger’s backstory and his powers. Once he learns, he’s a dream demon he would probably ask for advice from someone in the Justice League Dark such as John Constantine.

Once the day has passed, and Bruce gathered all he could get, it would be time for him to go to sleep and enter Freddy’s dream world. Freddy is powerful when in his victim’s dreaming mind, however, only if they fear him. Normally, the Springwood Slasher goes after teenagers who fear his entire being. He’s never gone after someone like Batman before.

Bruce Wayne has undergone intense training to have full control over his emotions and mind. Being able to take control of his own dream should be quite easy for him, making Freddy less powerful.

The Caped Crusader could also feel no fear towards Krueger, which would weaken him even more, this would cause the two really to rely on hand to hand combat. Since Batman knows 127 different martial arts, Freddy’s claw may not be enough to give him an advantage, even if he is in his own realm.

And The Winner Is...

Freddy Krueger’s signature sweater, hate and gloves made him unforgettable throughout the horror movie ages. But he would have never lasted if he wasn’t as scary as his sense of style. Here’s 10 reasons why he’s still in our nightmares.

10) How he bloodily rips people apart with his blades

How many other serial killers do you know that can create a blood tornado? Or how about tossing their victims across the ceiling? His iconic blade glove is creepy enough on its own, but seeing it in action brings horrific thoughts to the phrase “like a warm knife through butter”.

9) His face

Being a burn victim does do some damage to any face, but being a demon distorts what would elicit compassion into terror. The stretched, thin flesh giving way to the muscle fibers that resemble the fiery pits of hell. Your final reminder of where you’re headed once he’s done with you.

They always say, you should do what you love. To see a smile on Freddy’s face though is enough to make your stomach turn. The thrill he gets from making you run into his favorite Nightmare Factory will ironically give you chills. Only a true monster would get such an adrenaline rush and direct pleasure from chasing and murdering teenage and adult sized victims.

5) He’s already dead

While most former neighborhood parents thought that this would be a good thing, killing Freddy ended up making him immortal and at least part demon. How can you kill what’s already dead? The terrifying answer is that you must grab him out of his home turf in dream world to be able to compete on an even foot, a foot you’ll be lucky to still have.

4) No one can help you

Inside your dream it’s just you and him, no one else. No friends, no parents no pre-famous Johnny Depp boyfriend. You can only rely on yourself and whatever control you have over your own actions in the middle of a nightmare that’s literally trying to kill you.

3) We can’t understand his motivations

Seeking revenge on the people that killed him? Sure, that’s understandable. What’s not is being a serial killer in the first place. His sadistic nature of seeking other people’s pain for his personal enjoyment. There’s a level of frightening that Freddy reaches when we can’t comprehend why he wants what he wants.

2) He waits for you to fall into his nightmare

You need to sleep. Your body demands it. No matter how much coffee, cigarettes, jumping jacks or ‘Stay Awake’ pills you take, it’s going to happen. The dream world is where Freddy has the higher ground and he never wants to give up his homefield advantage. Inside the nightmares he’s in control and can change into everything from an unsuspecting hall monitor to a killer convertible. Or stretch out his arms into a size that makes you believe that maybe, this is God.

1) He’s Real

OK, not quite so. But the inspiration for Freddy comes from a real-life death. Wes Craven read an article about a young boy who made it to America with his family out of the killing fields in Cambodia but died due to terror while waking up from a nightmare. He was terrified what was chasing him in his dreams was going to get him so he tried to stay up for as long as possible before.

Everyone grows up with a local ghost story. The doctor that haunts his old house he killed himself in, or maybe just the hook hand hitchhiker. These campfire stories that everyone grew up with bring life to horrific beings. The fact that Freddy’s origin is so relatable to your childhood gives him even more terrifying truth.

The more you focus and think about Freddy, the realer he becomes. Remember, your belief in him is what opens the door to your dream world. You can’t just disbelief him away either. Once he’s in, he’s in.

Fear is mankind’s oldest instinct, and since the dawn of film we’ve sought out ways to confront it in the cinema. Here are 13 horror movie villains that will haunt you long after the closing credits.

Why do we watch horror films? Is it to satisfy our darkest curiosities? Is it because we secretly enjoy being frightened? Is it because we see a kind of truth about ourselves in their shadowy depths?

Whatever the reason, there’s little disputing that the key to any classic horror film is a great villain at its center. Here’s a countdown of the thirteen scariest villains from horror movies:

13) Leatherface (The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, 1974)

“It’s okay, he looks happy to see us.”

A group of friends takes a road trip to visit an old family home in Texas. Soon they find themselves at the mercy of a family of psychotic cannibals. And the worst of them is a bull of a man who speaks only in grunts and who wears a mask made of human skin.

“You’re right, this *was* more emotionally rewarding than a trip to Six Flags.”

Of course Leatherface is terrifying. Masks are creepy. Chainsaws are scary. But there’s something going on beneath the surface too. Leatherface isn’t just a random scary bad guy. Leatherface is a reflection of us.

Think of how a cow might perceive humans. Tall, lumbering things who wear the skins of other animals, who bludgeon your kind to death. Who dismember you, hang you from meathooks, stuff you in freezers and devour you with glee. The terror Leatherface inspires in us is the cattle’s terror of the slaughterhouse.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre turns us, literally and figuratively, into what we eat.

12) Freddy Krueger (A Nightmare on Elm Street)

The stuff of nightmares.

The teenagers of Springwood, Ohio are suffering from terrible dreams - dreams so real that the wounds they sustain while dreaming become physically real. After a girl is slashed to death by an unseen assailant, the teenagers begin to uncover the truth about what is going on - about the man who haunts their dreams, a man covered in burns and wearing bladed claws on his fingers.

Heather Langenkamp would go on to reprise her role as Nancy in future Elm Street films. For better or for worse.

The reason Freddy Krueger is a classic horror villain is almost laughably simple: he strikes in the places we feel safest, and proves that those places weren’t safe at all. In fact, Nancy comes to realize that the things that were keeping her safe that created Freddy in the first place: the police who failed to bring him to justice, the townsfolk who stepped in and intervened, the parents whose personal demons kept them indifferent and uncomprehending as he preyed on children in their dreams.

If you think that’s putting the blame in the wrong place, ask yourself this. Put aside the monster that he became after his death. What proof do we have that Krueger was guilty in the first place? The opinion of a group of vigilantes who took the law into their own hands. What if Krueger was innocent? What if the entity that targeted these people’s children took his name and face for itself, as a mocking reminder of their crime?

Food for thought.

11) Dracula (Horror of Dracula)

Dracula is really a perfect gentleman for the first half-hour of the film, until he turns into…this.

When Jonathan Harker fails in his mission to assassinate Count Dracula, the vampire begins a quest for revenge by targeting Lucy Holmwood, the woman Harker loves. Only Dr. Van Helsing possesses the knowledge of how to defeat the creature once and for all - but time is running out, and Lucy is already falling under the Count’s sinister spell…

Peter Cushing (Van Helsing) would go on to co-star in many more horror films alongside Lee.

Dracula is the seductive evil - the charming prince from a distant land who offers you forbidden pleasures. Bela Lugosi might be the actor most associated with the character, but his portrayal was overly theatrical even by the standards of the time and lost a degree of seductive charm. Lee was the first actor on the silver-screen to truly embody the character in its totality - a tall, handsome, cultured figure who would be highly attractive if it weren’t for the fact that he’s a raging undead monster. The horror of Dracula is in standing on the edge of a cliff and hearing that little voice in your head urging you to jump.

10) The Crawlers (The Descent)

The creatures navigate by smell and hearing, which gives them a pretty big advantage in a lightless environment.

A group of friends gather for a spelunking expedition. When a cave-in traps them in an uncharted cave system with no hope of rescue, the group have no choice but to press on further and deeper into the darkness. Soon they stray into the domain where they are not welcome, a domain populated by creatures that have adapted to survive in the pitch blackness of the caves. Creatures that subsist on the flesh of their prey.

The film is notable for having an all-female cast, a decision the writer-director made in order to go against genre convention.

As literal cavemen, the crawlers could be thought of as a feral offshoot of human evolution, though their true origins are left a mystery to us. The crawlers are marvelously effective horror antagonists in large part because of Neil Marshall’s direction, which emphasizes just how out of their depth the protagonists are in this primitive shadow kingdom.

9) The Entity (It Follows)

The creature is visible only to its quarry, which puts a crimp in any attempts to get help.

A high school student is being followed by a supernatural creature, a creature that disguises itself as random passers-by, a creature that will hunt her down and kill her unless she can pass on the curse the same way it was passed on to her - through sexual contact.

The protagonist Jay learns about the curse from the man who passed it on to her.

You’ve gotten involved in something terrible, and it’s destroying your life. You can’t tell your parents. You can barely tell your friends. And the only way you can see out of it is to lie or cheat or run away. The entity is the thing from your past that you think you can’t escape, the thing you secretly blame yourself for even though there was no way you could have known what would happen. It’s that uniquely adolescent fear: the fear that your life is over. And all that’s left is to wait for the consequences to knock at your door.

8) The Woman (Under the Skin)

The nameless woman is both protagonist and villain in the film.

A young woman roams Scotland seducing men and sending them to their deaths for a mysterious purpose. But as she comes to know more of humanity, she also begins to question her mission.

As the story progresses, we find ourselves drawn further into the woman’s mindset.

The word “villain” almost loses its meaning when it comes to the main character of Under the Skin. Yes, there are things she does that would make her primary antagonist material in a lot of other films - and yet the film shows us the world through her point of view, experiencing it as a curious but dispassionate outsider rather than someone who is evil or cruel for its own sake. Whether the horror factor of the film derives from her being a monster or from the world seeming monstrous to her is up to you.

7) Pennywise the Clown (IT)

I knew kids who would run screaming out of the room at the sight of Tim Curry’s face on the IT DVD’s cover. I probably know a few adults who would do the same, too.

In the small town of Derry, Maine, a group of children fight a malevolent entity that can take on the forms of their worst fears - an entity that devours children and inspires terror in them as a way of “salting the meat”. IT has no known true name, but one of its best-known aliases is that of Pennywise the Clown.

Adults might have found Curry’s over-the-top performance more funny than scary, but they’re missing the point: IT is a creature that feeds on children, and so it is meant to terrify kids. Many of the things IT does seem to have no purpose. But that’s what abuse and violence looks like to children: purposeless, pointless pain that somehow continues even though there’s no reason for it to do so.

The horror of IT is the horror of living under a creature who is literally incomprehensibly evil, who embraces cruelty and suffering on a godlike scale beyond our imagination.

6) Sadako Yamamura (Ringu)

It is said that there is a videotape that brings death in seven days to any who watch it. When her niece Tomoko dies a week after watching the tape, reporter Reiko Asakawa begins to investigate and slowly uncovers its history as well as that of its creator, Sadako Yamamura.

The main characters are Reiko, who is investigating the cursed tape, and her ex-husband Ryuji.

It’s no surprise that the idea of a cursed video tape could capture the imagination of a generation reared on TV. Ringu draws influence from classic witch folklore for its backstory, but it’s given to us through a thoroughly modern fear - that of watching something forbidden to us. It’s the characters’ morbid curiosity to see the tape that dooms them to Sadako’s curse, a poetic reversal of Sadako’s fate in the well.

5) Jack Torrance (The Shining)

This is Jack. He’s got problems.

Aspiring writer Jack Torrance accepts a position as winter caretaker of the remote Overlook Hotel. He moves there with his wife and son and begins his work. But isolation and the harsh winter begin to grate at his nerves - and strange phenomena begin to manifest around the Overlook, taking on the appearance of long-gone guests.

You can just feel the family love radiating off him, can’t you?

In some ways, Jack is an outsider in this list. He doesn’t have any special powers or genetic abnormalities. He’s basically just a regular guy. But when the competition is a meek waif of a woman and a six-year-old child, a grown man with a fire axe pretty much is a superhuman monster. Forget the ghosts and the torrents of blood and the creepy twins: the beating heart of The Shining’s horror is Jack, a monster of the kind that exists in real life.

4) The Witch (The Witch)

Hint: she doesn’t *actually* look like this.

Banished from their settlement for religious differences, a family of Puritan settlers ekes out a living in the wooded wilds of New England. The threat of sin hangs like a curse upon the land, and strange omens and ill fortune befall their homestead.

The family struggles to find strength through renewed faith and prayer. But soon they begin to suspect that there is a greater malevolence behind their troubles. They begin to suspect witchcraft.

Although the film follows the entire family, the focus is largely on the rebellious daughter Thomasin.

The Witch is a masterpiece of atmosphere, and the key to that atmosphere lies in how it portrays the Witch herself: mostly, it doesn’t. Her presence is felt through the ominous silence of the surrounding forest, the freakish occurrences on the homestead, the family’s gradual slide into paranoia. When we see her she is on the edge of our perception: half in shadow, seen in hallucinations and by imaginative children.

If Jack Torrance is frightening because of how real he is, the Witch is terrifying because she might not be. And if she is in the minds of the family, then perhaps we all have a Witch of our own, lurking at the edges of our minds, waiting for the right moment to creep in and steal our lives from us.

3) The Xenomorph (Alien)

“Its structural perfection is matched only by its hostility.”

When a commercial spaceship responds to a distress signal on a nearby planet, its crew is attacked by an unknown organism. As the crew retreats to their ship and return to the depths of space, they do not suspect that the attack was merely the opening stage of a gruesome hunt in the bowels of the ship. Soon the alien is born and it begins to grow - grow bigger, stronger, and hungrier.

Protagonist Ripley (left) was originally scripted as a gender-neutral character, eventually resulting in a female lead who wasn’t bound by stereotype.

For thousands of years, we have lived in terror of predators that come in the night. The xenomorph is that ancient nightmare made flesh. Its slick black exoskeleton, its corrosive bodily fluids, and its gruesome method of reproduction all come together in a vision of the ultimate predator. A primordial creature of darkness, to be feared and held at bay with fire and hope.

2) Count Orlok (Nosferatu)

A distant ancestor to Slenderman, perhaps?

Solicitor Thomas Hutter is summoned to Transylvania to do business with his new client, Count Orlok. Little does he realize that Orlok is a creature of legend, a predator who feeds on the blood of humans and spews plague in his wake…a vampire. Hutter barely escapes with his life, but Orlok is making plans to move to Hutter’s home town - and he has his sights set on his wife, Ellen.

Everything about Orlok is...wrong. His stiff, hunched gait. His hands, rigid and curved like claws. His empty, staring eyes. His clothes, wrapped around him like a straitjacket. He moves not like a person, but like a creature wearing a person. Nosferatu is almost a hundred years old, but Count Orlok is still mesmerizing to watch and visually the most frightening thing on this list.

That is, except for…

1) The Thing (The Thing, 1982)

The creature seems to rearrange body parts without particularly knowing what they’re *for*.

In the frozen wastes of Antarctica, an American research team stumbles upon the remains of an ill-fated Norwegian science outpost. As they slowly piece together what happened, an alien intelligence walks among them, wearing its victims’ bodies as a perfect disguise.

By the time they realize what is happening, there is no way to tell who has been converted and who hasn’t.

Until they start to change...

R.J. MacReady eventually takes charge of the effort to combat the Thing. But he himself could be one of the infected…

Some monsters hide offscreen, or in the dark, or in their lair. The Thing hides in front of you. It hides in the people you love.

The Thing is the quickening heartbeat, the shiver down the spine, the crawling of the skin. It is the eye-twisting feeling of looking at someone you know and suddenly realizing they are not what you think they are.

Watch the faces of these people closely. Watch them laugh and joke and drink and worry. Watch their warmth, their fire, and their life. And when they begin to transform, watch these things drain from their faces. Watch the humanity scooped out of them like flesh out of a pumpkin.

And you will know fear.

In Conclusion

Monsters are everywhere. They live in our myths and in our bedtime stories; they live on the fringes of our society and among us. Some are outlandish creatures that could only ever exist in fiction. Some are real…as real as you and me.
