Some perks in 7 Days to Die are more useful than others. Today we're looking at the top 15 best perks, warts and all.

15. Advanced Engineering

Turrets don't need to be told what to do.

This perk seems like a requirement. Learning how to make all the things ever is part of the self-sufficiency fantasy of survival horror. You just don't have to play that way if you don't want to.

That's the beauty of this game: you're not pigeon-holed into playing a certain way. If you don't wanna craft, you don't have to.

Advanced Engineering is the perk that unlocks the recipes for the forge, workbench, and cement mixer. These items appear in trader inventories on a regular basis, so your mileage may vary on how useful you'll find this. It also unlocks recipes relating to electricity, traps, and turrets, while making a lot of items cheaper to craft.

If your playstyle leans on traps and turrets, you are going to want this perk. Or not. After all, you'll be able to find everything you could possibly need from your local traders.

Usefulness

Advanced Engineering Perk Review

A 20% increase to craft speed is okay, but it's not amazing.
Electrical trap kill XP boost is probably not going to make a big difference in your build unless that's the main way you kill things.
35% reduction in crafting cost of forged steel is not terrible, though not a good reason to take this perk.
Reduced cost of making electrical devices is kind of nice, but again, not a necessity.
Bottom line: take it if you are focused on crafting, don't take it if you aren't. You can get by without it and still do well.

14. From the Shadows

Blend in.

This perk is a necessary part of a stealth build, where it helps turn you into a deadly assassin who can creep past unwanted fights before the zombies even know you're around. 'From the Shadows' is great for a very specific sort of player. For the average survivor, it isn't worth the investment.

To make it most effective, pair with melee weapons, bows, and Hidden Strike. If you don't spend the majority of your time in sneak mode, don't bother with this perk.

Usefulness

Makes hiding 65% more effective at max level, which is a great way to avoid unwanted fights.
Sneak a lot faster, making exploration quick and painless.
Paired with Advanced Muffled Connector mods, it can get you close enough in heavy armor to one-shot a zombie with your crossbow.
Does not protect you from Blood Moon hordes. They will find you.
The backbone of a good stealth build. Why would you sneak around without it?

Muffles your movements by an extra 50%.

13. The Penetrator

Take out multiple zombies in one go.

A Perception skill, The Penetrator unlocks armor-piercing ammo and makes your weapons ignore a percentage of enemy armor. It also makes your shots with rifles go through extra targets. This is an excellent perk for folks that enjoy the sniper life. Being able to take out multiple targets at once from a distance, or pop open a POI without effort, is definitely a plus.

PVP players, take note.

It's not spectacular for other playstyles, though it does help other weapons hit a little harder.

Craft armor piercing rifle bullets and shoot through multiple targets, saving time AND ammo.
Shoot through blocks without getting close!
Melt through more zombies at once during a blood moon—if you can avoid getting swarmed.
Very specialized.

Details

You find weak spots in a target's armor and can use AP rifle bullets to shoot through multiple organic targets.
Ignore 35% of armor with firearms, archery, and spears at max level.
Penetrate 3 additional targets with armor-piercing rounds in hunting, marksman, or sniper rifles.
Armor-piercing rounds can also destroy up to 1000 HP of a block.

Usefulness: 50/100

12. Deep Cuts

Slice 'n dice.

Craft better knives, do more damage with them, and cause bleeding wounds. Power attacks make your enemies bleed, too, and enemies don't move as quickly when they're bleeding. Yes, you can bleed zombies to death. Don't ask how it makes sense.

This perk is weirdly effective at what it does, and it shines when paired with other agility perks. Take a couple jabs at a zombie, then retreat and let it die. Requires a lot more patience than shooting or blowing them up, but if you're a stealth player, you'll want to take this perk.

Deep Cuts Perk Review

Slow and damage over time debuffs make kiting zombies a little easier.
Bleeding wounds alone can kill most zombies, just jab and run.
A bit of a niche perk.
There are easier and faster ways to kill if you aren't going for a stealth build.

Details

Specialize in using bladed weapons like knives or machetes to bleed your foes dry.
Deal 50% more damage with bladed weapons.
Inflict up to 7 bleeding wounds debuffs on an enemy. Power attacks inflict 5.
Enemies run 20% slower while bleeding.
Attacks refresh the bleed.

Usefulness: 50/100

11. Archery

You can still one-shot zombies with a bow without this perk.

Bows are an effective weapon from the beginning. They're easy to make, and the ammo can be crafted in your bag. Archery unlocks better bows and the simply excellent Iron Crossbow, which is your first foray into crossbow use. I love crossbows. Being able to take out distant enemies without worrying about the noise from gunfire is a big plus, and it can save your life early on.

Feathers can sometimes be a problem, but you'll have an easier time getting those from nests than you will getting eggs.

I am a big fan of this perk with the caveat being that I'm also a big fan of silent headshots. If you don't like bows, don't use them, and don't ever plan to, then this perk just won't work out for you.

Archery Perk Review

Shoot harder. Shoot faster. We like that.
Make better quality bows.
And yet… still not completely necessary for being effective with bows.
Agility points plus a level 5-6 bow purchased from a trader, plus decent aim… congratulations, you're already an assassin without this perk.

Master the use of bows and crossbows.
Deal 50% more damage with bows and crossbows.
Aim, draw, and reload 50% faster.
Craft wooden bows and iron crossbows.

10. Demolitions Expert

BOOM.

An easy, almost-painless way to deal with zombie hordes is with explosives. Once you're able to make or buy a workbench, all you need is gun powder, plant fibers, and short iron pipes to craft pipe bombs: then it's time to unleash carnage.

Just one point into Demolition Expert unlocks the recipe.

9. Parkour

If this zombie knew Parkour, he wouldn't have had any problems with me.

Become Spider-man, sort of. Located in the Agility tab, Parkour makes jumping drain less stamina and prevents you from mangling yourself when you fall from great heights. It also lets you jump three blocks high, which is useful for getting out of hairy situations.

If you're anything like me and prone to flinging yourself off high places in video games, then Parkour is a must because it will save your life so many times. You'll be able to fall from ridiculous heights without shattering your limbs. That extra-high jump makes sneaky gameplay a breeze. Greet your friends by jumping around like a maniac without destroying your stamina.

8. Pummel Pete

Bring it on.

Pummel Pete, located under the Strength attribute, is a perk that boosts the effectiveness of clubs and baseball bats. Get a damage boost, deal even more hurt to stunned baddies, and get a better chance to knock zombies on their asses with your power attacks.

Bats and clubs are great because they don't require ammo, they have a bunch of useful mods, and they aren't too hard on your stamina. Stamina is important in the apocalypse.

Pummel Pete Review

Turn stunned enemies into ground meat.
More knockdown chances = fewer zombie bites.
Craft better weapons with every level.
Massive improvements to a weapon class that is very cheap to make and upgrade.
Puts you into direct contact with zombies, opening you up to getting hit, which isn't great early on.
Obviously not worthwhile if you prefer attacking from range.

Specialize in knocking your foes senseless with clubs.
Unlocks baseball bat crafting.
50% more damage with clubs & bats.
200% more damage to stunned enemies.
100% chance for power attacks to knock down enemies.
3 successive hits in a short time causes the last blow to do 100% extra damage.

7. Master Chef

Delicious snacks, coming soon.

Everyone has to eat, especially during the apocalypse, and crafted food is better for you than scavenged food. Each point invested in Master Chef unlocks more recipes, but in the early game, you can get away with just investing one point to unlock Bacon and Eggs and Boiled Meat.

Bacon and Eggs is the best early-game food for keeping yourself full, and will keep you happy and healthy while you navigate the end of the world. It's worth it to keep investing in this perk because of the buffs that cooked foods provide, such as better stamina regeneration and increased health.

Master Chef Perk Review

Unlocks recipes to turn you into the best chef the apocalypse has to offer.
Boost stats and recover from bad zombie times a lot faster than with Charred Meat.
Higher-end recipes require hoarding a lot of materials.
Makes canned foods more effective.

6. Lucky Looter

Cha-ching.

With Lucky Looter, you spend less time looting and get better items for your trouble. It's especially helpful early on, and boosts the quality of stuff you find when in your initial 'running around screaming' phase.

As you find better gear, you live longer. As you live longer, your chances of finding better stuff increases, and on, and on.

When maxed out it more than doubles how quickly you loot containers. Sometimes that's the difference between getting out alive and being a snack.
Does not impact the loot bonus of people you play with, just you and the containers you open.
Starts out weak, not really shining until maxed out.
Once maxed, it's common to get level 5 and 6 equipment, so well worth maxing early.

Specialize in tracking down the motherlode and maybe getting a little extra for your trouble. You find better loot with every perk level.
Looting is 80% faster.
Adds 25% to loot bonus.

5. Mother Lode

My poor, overflowing inventory.

One of the most important things early on in 7 Days to Die is establishing a shelter to prepare for the hordes of undead that want your tasty brains. Building takes a lot of materials, and the Mother Lode perk boosts what you get from ore, stone, terrain blocks, and trees.

You'll need all that stuff if you want to survive the apocalypse.

The more you build, the more stuff you need. Simple.
Just get this perk.

4. Miner 69'er

Mining is less of a chore with Miner 69'er.

Craft better tools and do more damage to blocks with them. This perk makes your life so much easier, since you'll have no problem bringing down trees or digging holes.

Oh, you'll also repair your buildings faster. Yay!

Higher block damage = faster harvesting.
Spend less time digging, more time doing other stuff.
Out-repair the damage zombies do up to a certain point. Don't expect to out-repair a Blood Moon horde, though.

3. Better Barter

Traders are our friends.

I love the trade system in 7 Days to Die, and Better Barter is a great perk for working with it. A 25% discount on purchases—and 25% more dukes when you sell—is huge, especially as you get into dealing with higher item tiers. This perk is a must to get the most out of traders' secret stashes, too.

2. Sexual Tyrannosaurus

Ready to deliver headshots.

Sexual Tyrannosaurus is a must-have. Not only does it reduce the amount of stamina your melee weapons and tools use, it also grants you 30 stamina per killing blow.

Oh, and as if that wasn't enough, your power attacks use less stamina, too. It's the type of perk that's hard to turn down, whether you're a melee player or not.

Use less stamina when fighting and harvesting. Efficiency is king when it comes to surviving the apocalypse
Power attacks use 50% less stamina, meaning you can hit harder for longer. Get out of rough situations, fast.

This perk does not have any disadvantages.

1. The Daring Adventurer

Gimme quests.

Max out this perk with 8 points in Intellect and rake in the dukes and rewards from questing. Questing is the best way to gear up your character and get access to the best stuff earlier than you would by following the crafting path.

Higher questing tiers produce better rewards. Combined with this perk, you can rake in the loot and, by extension, the dukes. Win-win.

Combine this perk with Better Barter for the best results: rewards you don't want will sell for higher prices, and the things you want to buy will be cheaper.

Usefulness

The Daring Adventurer Perk Review

Each level in this perk offers more quest reward options, and more chances to get better stuff.
More dukes from quest rewards is beneficial for pretty obvious reasons if you're regularly buying upgrades from the trader.
Workbenches, forges, and chemistry stations have a good chance of appearing in your quest rewards—getting them early is a HUGE time-saver.

10. Bob's Boars/Carl's Corn Farm (Best for Food)

What horrors await you here? Ha ha ha that's a SURPRISE.

Set a stone's throw from Spillway Lake lies a massive farm that's the site of two large businesses: Bob's Boars and Carl's Corn. It's across the street from another corn farm, and also happens to be where the enterprising survivor can find Super Corn.

This POI is huge. It's also chock full of unhappy boars just ripe for the harvesting, and a big surprise in the depths of the property. There's a fence surrounding the grounds, tons of corn, and the opportunity for further building.

What Makes Bob's Boars Great?

Free food when you move in. All the boars and corn are a great way to get your food stores built up.
North of the Wasteland city, surrounded by big POIs, and close to traders. You're never too far from supplies.
Tons of room for expansion.

9. Steel Water Tower (Best for Horde Nights)

That sudden stop at the bottom kinda hurts.

Located at 1092 E, 371 N, this convenient water tower is surrounded by a chain link fence and built from steel. It doesn't require much work to prepare it for early hordes: just need to break the ground beneath the ladder so zombies can't climb it.

This site is located just below Diersville. The main challenge with this location is getting the early steel to repair the tower—which won't matter much the first few horde nights, but will definitely become an issue eventually. Just raid Diersville's vending machines and street lights. Done.

For the record, I'm using this location as a base while running a knife build. I beefed up the fence with railings, I'm building a moat. It has been a fantastic location, and I don't have far to run to get to a trader. It's very cool, though very small compared to the bases I'm used to.

What Makes Steel Water Tower Great:

It's steel, which helps you survive horde nights long before you can make the stuff.
Diersville is right there, with a trader immediately west of your location (across the river). Earn a bike from early jobs and you're set for a while.Easily upgraded to meet your needs. Strengthen the fence, add some spikes, you'll be ready to survive the first handful of Hordes and then some.

8. Islands in the… River (Best for Living Your Island Dreams)

There aren't many horror movies that take place on islands, right? … RIGHT?

Located at the northwest corner of the map (1472W 714N), this set of islands presents a great building opportunity without straying far from a trader. Both islands spawn zombies, but you may be able to avoid horde activity by swimming to the little boathouse south of the big isle. It's the only building that's in the water.

Aside from being close to a trader, this locale is also set near two caves and several useful POIs. A Savage Country store sits due north.

This is a really cool building location simply because it sits in the middle of a lake. Terraform the hell out of it, or don't, survivors can create something unique here. It's an excellent site for a team base because it's so big.

What Makes The Islands Great?

Close to a trader for quests and supplies.
Perishton is just up the road, and you're surrounded by decent-sized POIs for sweet loot..
Good building location with clear line of sight all around.

7. City Fire Station 7 (Best for Desert Living)

#7 of one.

This POI is located in the desert biome of Navezgane, in the town of Departure. Find it at the northern edge. Fresh water is in the valley to the north, the river to the west, or the park at the center of the city. It's a solid build, a concrete two-level building that's easily upgraded as you level.

The fire station comes with two working vending machines, a flat roof for emergency getaways, and lots of loot in nearby buildings. It won't take much effort to turn this place into a proper compound with an outer wall.

I suggest knocking out the solid garage doors and installing a powered roll-up door or two. That's respectable garage space right there.

What Makes City Fire Station 7 Great?

Large, concrete build with plenty of room for everything a survivor needs.
Easy access to the (flat) roof for look-out purposes.
Since you're in town, you're right next to all sorts of stuff you can loot.

6. Canyon Cliff Dwellings (Best for Those Wanting a Unique Base Design)

Zombies will fall off this place repeatedly and it will be funny every time.

This location is very, very cool. Find it in the canyon at 1444 S, 762 E, with a trader to the east by the river. There's a mine attached to these dwellings that can be used for further storage or as an escape route.

It's not the most exciting place for loot, and it's built from stone, so it will require some upgrading to make it into a strong fortress. On the plus side? There's plenty of material around to upgrade the entire thing to concrete and beyond.

The Canyon Cliff Dwellings POI is big enough to be a decent multiplayer base. Muck about with the convenient mine, create a secured escape exit, and enjoy having the most interesting place in Navezgane.

What Makes Canyon Cliff Dwellings Great?

Unusual location in the middle of a deep canyon, perfect for someone that just wants a cool base.
Not far from a trader, so you'll still be able to quest and shop.
Mines and caves nearby provide you with materials.
Site is big and can easily be adapted into a clan or guild base.

5. Perishton Cemetery (Best for a Fortified Base)

With crypts for your goth friends.

The Perishton cemetery has a full outer wall around the yard, plus the church building itself. It's no big deal to dash in and out for scavenging runs, and the whole kit is easily upgraded into concrete. All it needs is some fortification.

There's enough room inside the church to turn it into a two-level base, if you want to, and space outside to grow crops or keep vehicles close. The part that sucks? The nearest trader is due south, on the eastern side of the biggest lake in Navezgane.

What Makes Perishton Cemetery Great?

Everything you need is already there. The building and wall require very little extra work.
Plenty of nearby POIs with excellent loot.
Hunting in the snow biome is easy. There are lots of animals around, so you won't starve.

4. Red Mesa (Best for Tech Loot and Fortification)

Restricted area? Not anymore!

Another location that's great for its fortification level is Red Mesa, a huge underground bunker with some serious surface defense. Concrete on top and all through the bowels of the beast, this place is hellish for explorers when attempting to clear it but it is so worth it.

There's a lot of tech to salvage here, lots of quality loot, and tons of space. If you get overwhelmed by the undead on the surface, you can easily retreat into the bunker and lick your wounds.

Find a trader to the northwest along the main highway, so you always have someplace to go for jobs and supplies.

What Makes Red Mesa Great?

This huge POI is heavily fortified right out the box. No need to upgrade blocks when you first move in.
Lots of high-end salvage makes adding electrical elements and robotics even easier.
The loot here is fantastic, even if clearing the place can be painful.

3. Coleman's Drive-In (Best for Builders)

Also a good place for Blood Moon shenanigans.

The drive-in is next to the island lake. You have access to nearby traders, lots of water, and large POIs for looting and scavenging. It has a nice wall around it and several small outbuildings that can be adapted to your purposes.

There's also plenty of room to build. Set up watchtowers, storage facilities, crops, crafting workshops, the possibilities are endless.

What Makes Coleman's Drive-In Great?

Enough room to build your own settlement, if that's your thing.
Has its own water source, saving you trips to the lake and other nonsense.
Existing walls and outbuildings provide early cover for defending yourself from the undead.

2. Navezgane High School (Best for Loot and Group Play)

High School Musical: APOCALYPSE

If you're playing with a bunch of friends and need enough room for everybody, then head to 359 W, 1672 N. The school building here is huge. There are multiple rooms that are full of loot and stuff to scavenge, and this POI is surrounded by even more loot pinatas.

A group can make quick work of the nasties inside and the process of converting this building into a fortress. See everything for miles around while patrolling that flat roof, and convert the parking lot (or the track out back) into a massive farm.

What Makes Navezgane High School Great?

Tons of loot. Get prepared for your move-in date while you clear the place of zombies.
Lots of room for expansion.
Central to several other large POIs. This area is pretty rich in resources.

How to Get to Navezgane High School: start at 1:45.

1. The Prison (Best for Wasteland Survival)

Not pictured: three zombie bears at various points off-camera.

Do you like fending off zombie bears while out on a supply run? Then you definitely need to try running a base in the wasteland. The old prison is a great place to do it: walls! Watchtowers! Not too far from town! The water is questionable, but at least it's there.

The wasteland is the most difficult biome to survive in and it gets worse as you level up (or crank up the difficulty level). If you're looking for a challenge but don't want to sacrifice everything, the prison will give you what you need. You'll still have a fighting chance without having to start completely from scratch.

What Makes The Prison Great?

Premade watchtowers make it easy to take out zombies from a distance and watch for incoming hordes.
Walled courtyard cuts down the work of defense preparation.
You still have access to fresh water from the river, and supplies from the new-to-Alpha-20 town to the west.

25. Goodbye, fog

I can see clearly now the fog has gone.

Not a fan of the constant or near-constant fog? Here's how you can get rid of it:

Hit F1 to bring up the console.
Type gfx pp enable and hit enter.
Congratulations! You're in the clear!

Unless you like the gloomy atmosphere and not being able to see past your nose.

24. Throw stones to distract zombies

The stealthiest of stealth plays.

Early on in your 7 Days to Die career, you're going to find it's better to just avoid combat instead of risking injury and disease. If a zombie hasn't noticed you yet, you can toss a stone near it and it will follow that noise.

Open your inventory with the 'Tab' key.
Drag your Small Stones to the hotbar.
When sneaking, equip the Small Stones (press their button on the hotbar).
Hold the left mouse button to charge your throw, then release to throw.

23. Quest rewards are your best source of gear early in the game

You kinda creep me out, Trader Bob.

As soon as you access your first trader, guess what? You've hit paydirt.

Every trader has a selection of 'jobs', or quests, that you can complete to earn XP, dukes, and items. The easiest quests to do are Fetch and Restore Power quests, which require grabbing an item from a location and pressing a button, respectively.

Complete your quest, run back to the trader, and turn it in for sweet stuff.

Complete a certain number of quests and you'll get the chance to claim a free bicycle.

Go to your trader.
Press 'E' to talk to them.
Click 'Do you have any jobs?'
Click the quest you want to take.

Easy!

22. Combine bartering and questing for faster progression

I heart Better Barter.

Even before you unlock Better Bartering and The Daring Adventurer, the items that traders carry tend toward being better than what you can craft and find—especially early on, and in higher difficulty levels.

Take Fetch quests at first, and take Clear quests only if you feel you can tackle the undead. Any quest rewards you don't want or need can be sold. As you earn dukes, they can be put toward better weapons and anything else you need.

Level up The Daring Adventurer first to unlock more, and better, quest rewards.

21. Clubs and bows are love

Buh-bye, dude.

Not only can clubs and bows be made with materials that are everywhere, they can be repaired without repair kits. Leveling your strength perk turns you into a one-person zombie-wrecking crew, and headshots with a club? Delicious.

Feathers for arrows are plentiful between bird nests littering the ground (most common in the forest and tundra biomes) and the undead vultures that want to snack on you.

20. Become a farmer for infinite food

Once you get those perk points in, it is easy to get a MASSIVE farm going.

Farming is planting seeds in farm plots and letting them grow, then harvesting the resulting plants.

Farm plots are crafted from rotting flesh, wood, clay soil, and nitrate. Rotting flesh comes from harvesting the corpses that you find scattered through the world. You also get rotting flesh when you harvest zombie animals and body bags.

Nitrate? You'll find it from mining. Look for white blocks of ore while out and about, or white dots on the map.

You'll want to take the Living off the Land perk under Fortitude to get more vegetables with every harvest.

The best part about farming is that, once you plant things, you don't have to babysit them. Keep going around doing what you normally do and after a few days you'll have fully-grown plants.

Here's how to plant seeds:

Put your farm plot and any seeds you want to plant on your action bar.
Place your farm plot by right-clicking with it in your hands.
Select your seeds and plant by right-clicking on the farm plot.
You're done! The plant is fully grown when it no longer says '(Growing)' next to its name.

19. Be careful where you put your farm

One tip that I see way too often is the suggestion to build your farm on the roof of your shelter.

Don't do this.

People typically bring this up as a way to protect your crops from zombies, but in vanilla 7D2D, they ignore the crops unless you're dragging the fight to your farm plots. Don't do that. You will accidentally hit your plants.

Crops' weight changes as they grow. A fresh plot is lighter than a plot with a seedling, a plot with a seedling is lighter than a plot with a juvenile plant. As plants get bigger, they get heavier. A roof that isn't properly supported will collapse under the weight of a bunch of plots and fully-grown crops.

If you still want to do this, you'll need to make sure that you:

Upgrade your building's walls and roof by right-clicking on each block with your stone axe/hammer/nail gun.
Build pillars to hold up the roof every 3-5 tiles.

A reinforced building makes all the difference.

18. Get cooking

Just like grandma used to make.

It pays to take at least one point in Master Chef because home-cooked meals, much like in real life, are better for you than the things you find digging around abandoned buildings.

The best early-game food is bacon and eggs, which is unlocked with the above perk. If you're already looting every nest you run into in the wild, then you're likely to build up a steady supply of eggs (unless your RNG is really awful). Even the very basic grilled and boiled meats are better than what you can make without perks.

17. Turn bones into a knife

That bear will feed you for a month.

Knives are the most efficient way to harvest meat and materials from dead animals and random corpses because they're classed as a Butcher Tool. You can still get those materials without using a knife, you just don't get the full amount—and you miss out on bonus materials.

Craft a bone knife from 5 bones and you'll never have to worry about that again. You will likely be able to make one after you harvest your first animal or zombie animal.

They can be repaired with bones, too.

16. Use pocket mods, not inventory perks

Stop wasting points on pack mule. STOP IT.

Pack Mule is tempting at first glance. It opens up inventory space! It prevents encumbrance! Being encumbered is not a game-breaking thing and is mostly just an annoyance. Instead of wasting perk points on Pack Mule, make use of clothing and armor pocket mods. You won't run into them super-early in the game and that's fine!

Armor pocket mods come from schematics and the trader. The clothing double pocket mod is learned from Needle and Thread Vol 7.

15. Be mindful of the heatmap

Stepping out of the bunker after three hours of smelting.

Everything you do in-game generates 'heat'.

'Heat' is how the game decides how interesting zombies will find an area. The more you do somewhere, the more likely it is that something will come to investigate—like a screamer zombie. 'Heat' goes away if you move away from an area and just stop doing things there.

Leaving forges and campfires running generates heat, as does scavenging from something like a wrecked car. Crafting? Zombies love that.

So if you've been highly active somewhere and you're concerned about accidentally summoning a horde, stop what you're doing and go elsewhere.

14. Reinforce existing buildings for shelter

7D2D has tons of different styles of building that can easily be turned into your base. Some points of interest, like the churches that are surrounded by walls, already come with important upgrades!

The benefit of reinforcing an existing building is that it saves time and materials. You have a shell, you can just strengthen it by upgrading the blocks (unless they're already up to cement, for example), putting up pillars if needed, and filling in gaps.

Don't forget to put down a Land Claim Block! They prevent zombies from spawning in a 41x41 region around wherever the block is placed. They also remove that building from a trader's list of quest locations, so it won't accidentally get reset and wipe out everything inside.

To make and use a Land Claim Block:

Have 5 Small Stones in your inventory.
Search 'land claim block' in the crafting window.
Craft the block.
Place the block in your toolbar.
With the block selected, right-click to place it.

13. Buy Bottles of Acid every time they appear on the trader

Wasteland gold.

Bottle of Acid is a crafting material that you can't make for yourself, and is difficult to find when looting. You'll sometimes see it in the trader's stock rotation, and if you do? Grab it.

It takes 5 bottles of acid to make a Chemistry Station, and it takes one per wheel if you have to make wheels for vehicles.

Why is the Chemistry Station important? It allows you to make gas cans, beer, first aid kits, and other items that make surviving the apocalypse much easier. It also makes antibiotics cheaper, and faster, to craft—even the herbal ones.

12. Set up more than one shelter

How extra do you want to be? Mods optional.

The Blood Moon event that happens every 7 days (unless you change the setting when you create a game) brings a boatload of zombies that can wipe out everything you own if you aren't prepared. Outside of the Blood Moon event, you can also find yourself swarmed by wandering hordes and unable to get back to your main base.

It is always worthwhile to set up satellite locations with some extra supplies so you aren't completely screwedwhen you get overwhelmed.

These extra bases can also act as storage depots when you've been looting away from home. Fill 'em up, clear 'em out later when you have a larger vehicle.

11. Let vultures come to you

This game is why I get uneasy when I see vultures circling in real life.

Vultures are a pain in the butt. They attack quickly, they make you sick, they can bleed you to death—many a newbie has died to these jerks.

Don't bother trying to shoot them out of the sky when you see them: you'll never hit them. Instead, wait until they come after you. They will eventually, and they only take a few hits with a club to drop. It's not that these guys are tough, it's that they're quick.

10. If you can't use it, repair & sell it

Cha-ching.

Tools, weapons, and armor are worth more dukes when they're in good condition. Instead of scrapping your old gear or that nice shotgun you found but can't use, repair it and sell it to the trader. You get a handsome amount of dukes (whether you have perks toward bartering or not, though you should) for your trouble.

Fully repairing an item can add hundreds of dukes to the value of that piece, more than what the repair kit would cost you to make.

Here's how to repair:

Open your inventory.
Click on the item you want to repair.
Click 'repair' in the item's menu, or hit the shortcut (default is 'A')
Wait.
The item will go into your crafting queue, and after a short time, pop back into your inventory at max durability.

9. Nearly everything you do earns XP

Ready to gain 10 levels in 3 minutes?

Almost every activity you do, from harvesting to killing zombies, generates experience for your character. As you gain experience, you level up. As you level up, you earn points to invest in your perks.

All of the following activities will help you level up:

Chopping down trees.
Harvesting & salvaging blocks.
Salvaging vehicles.
Upgrading and repairing blocks.
Killing zombies and animals.
Opening a new-to-you container in the world.
Selling items to traders.
Questing.
Mining/digging.

Going on an upgrade spree or doing a ton of mining does wonders for your experience bar.

8. You can gather Forged Steel before you can make it

Trader Rekt won't mind if you smash it, right?

Before you can make your own Forged Steel, you have to have a Crucible for your Forge. If you don't have that, there are multiple items that you can harvest for this block. Use a disassembly tool, like a wrench, to get your steel—if you don't, you'll just get scraps.

The following blocks can be harvested for Forged Steel:

Gas pump
Chandelier
Hardened Chest
Vending Machines
All safes
Street Lights
Army Munitions Box

Chests and containers must have been generated in the world in order to give up Forged Steel. I recommend targeting street lights, broken vending machines, and chandeliers—leave safes and other containers! Once emptied, they will eventually have loot in them again.

7. Paintings harbor treasure

Possible treasure or immense disappointment.

You know the portraits on the walls in several POIs?

Break 'em.

Sometimes there's loot hiding behind them. Sometimes a quest item is hiding back there when you're on one of those fetch quests, too, so it is never a bad idea to get into the habit of smashing 'em. You can just drop the glass that you get—there's no reason to keep it, and if you need to craft glass bottles, it's better to use sand.

6. Every vehicle has storage space

The motorcycle is the most badass vehicle in the game.

From the humble bicycle to the gyrocopter, every vehicle in vanilla 7 Days to Die can act as portable storage. The storage doesn't get really good until the 4x4 truck, and you can't return a vehicle to your inventory if it has things in storage.

To access vehicle inventory:

While looking at the vehicle in the world, hold E to call up the radial menu.
Look for the 'Access storage' option. It's usually a little bag icon.
Select it. Your vehicle inventory will open up and you can now use it.

5. Most buildings have a planned 'looting route'

You could smash the front door in, or you could go through this handy hole in the wall.

Have you ever been in a POI and noticed how flashlights and lanterns are sometimes set up as if pointing you in the right direction, or how debris is scattered as if to guide you to specific places?

It is.

Most buildings are set up with a "looting route" in mind. By following the route, you don't have to break any walls or other obstacles and can just clear the place out while cleaning house, if you know what I mean. These buildings tend to 'end' with a final loot room, with multiple boxes and crates or something that's otherwise really desirable. You'll know them when you see them.

4. Sell weapon parts, don't hoard them

Joel is ready for you…r stuff.

By the time you gather enough Crossbow Parts or insert weapon part here to build yourself something, you'll likely have found a much nicer item to use instead. There's very little you can't find on traders or through quests—so save yourself the headache and just sell the parts to a vendor. They're worth a decent amount of dukes.

3. Save your brass

Good luck, survivor.

The only ingredient for making bullets that we can't mine? Brass. Brass is found by scavenging or scrapping various brass items that you find in the world. Radiators are made of brass, so are dukes.

Right now, the only way to increase the amount of this valuable yellow metal is to read Wasteland Treasures Vol. 7 and Lucky Looter Vol. 3.

2. Add a mod to a weapon, tool, or piece of armor before selling it

Just don't sell the one you're using.

Modded items sell for more dukes than those without, and most mods are worth under 100 dukes anyway. Adding cheap mods to a decent weapon makes the price jump considerably and makes selling those items worth your while.

To add a mod to a weapon, tool, or piece of armor:

Open your inventory.
Select the item you want to mod.
Hit 'Mod'

1. Keep a back-up of your save file once you get a vehicle

Yay, truck time! Until your game explodes.

There is a fun glitch where, sometimes, a vehicle will just… despawn. There's no reason behind it that I can see, it just happens.

If it happens to you and you're exceptionally lucky, you'll just lose a bike or two—but some folks on Reddit and elsewhere have reported losing bigger vehicles with full inventories. I lost my bike this way. So far, though… fingers crossed.

7 Days To Die Review - Is It Worth Playing in 2023

Any hesitation about playing 7 Days to Die is understandable: the game is nearly 10 years old and has never left Alpha. It's also one of the few games that has seen consistent updates and changes throughout its time in Early Access. I stopped buying Early Access games for quite some time because of how many wound up being abandoned by their creators.

Is it worth buying after ten years in development? Let's take a look at the game's features and figure that out.

About 7 Days to Die

7 Days to Die is an open-world zombie survival sandbox game. Craft by day, defend yourself at night—mostly. Don't run out of food or water, and don't let the wildlife or other players kill you. Good luck.

The Fun Pimps released the game into Steam's Early Access in December 2013. Since then, it's up to 20 major Alpha updates alone and boasts 800 in-game items plus 1300 different building blocks.

The only limits? Your imagination and physics. Yes, physics. More on that in a bit.

Over 14 million copies of 7 Days to Die have sold since release.

7 Days to Die Story

This is turning out to be a really bad day.

Welcome to Navezgane, Arizona, population: you, a handful of survivors, and millions of the shambling dead. You're a survivor in a world decimated by the third world war, trying to stay alive with a mysterious virus on the loose and its victims trying to eat you.

7 Days to Die has a pretty typical storyline among zombie media, but you won't run into story content outside of quest and treasure map text. It's Coming Soon™, eventually.

There's plenty of room for creating your own stories here, but if you play games in order to follow a narrative and get immersed in someone else's tale, this isn't the game for you. Yet.

7 Days to Die Gameplay

A little sample of how the game works.

Before you start playing, you get to create your own character using a bunch of sliders. The model updates in real time as you make adjustments. Hair options are limited. You're not gonna see much of your character once you enter the game, though: 90% of the time, you're in first person view. You have the option of selecting a premade character if you just want to jump into the game.

7 Days to Die doesn't have classes. You earn XP through activities like killing zombies, harvesting materials, and chewing on the scenery. As you level up, you get points that you can put into improving your character.

You'll also find better equipment and recipes for making new things as you play. If you make friends with traders at city outposts, you can buy your way to having incredible gear, instead.

It's possible to sustain your gameplay entirely on crafting, or on running quests, or just by scavenging. You can choose to be nomadic. You can build up a kick-ass shelter or improve an existing building and make it your own.

Just make sure that whatever you build is structurally sound. Knock out too many walls, or dig too large of a cave, and everything will come crashing down on top of you.

Like I said earlier: physics. The game does inform you if what you're building won't support itself, just watch for the blocks to change color. If you're building something and the blocks orange or red, it's time to set up a support pillar.

You won't find friendly NPCs outside of the traders outside every major city. Each trader acts as a vendor and quest-giver. They'll send you to other traders sometimes, but that's the extent of interaction.

There are currently 30 different zombies in the game. Of those, 11 are 'normal', 8 are a little tougher than average, and 11 are special. Special zombies—including bears—have different skills and mechanics that make them dangerous.

I think you made a wrong turn somewhere, biker dude.

Every type of zombie can spawn as an extra-fast, extra-tough feral or Radiated version. If you think being mauled by an undead bear is bad, try getting puked on by a radioactive cop that explodes when near-death.

Much of the fun of 7D2D comes in the form of randomly-generated maps. From 4k to 16k, representing areas as big as 256Km², you have plenty of room to play and slay. The game places towns, villages, points of interest, and biomes based upon the options you pick in the generator.

That feature alone helps replayability, and with a healthy modding community and hundreds of active servers, there are options for building the game beyond what you get out of the box.

7 Days to Die Combat

Show those zombies who's boss with a range of weapons and combat styles. Take this agility combat build, for instance.

The game prepares you for the apocalypse with 52 craftable weapons in three categories: melee, ranged, and explosives. As your character levels up, you're able to invest points into different perks that improve your killing power.. Perks also teach you to make better quality weapons.

7D2D gradually increases the difficulty of zombie spawns the longer you play. With the Blood Moon Horde arriving every 7th day and getting bigger each time, there's no shortage of targets. The game hasn't introduced any 'bosses' yet, though some zombies can feel like that kind of an encounter when they're exploding in your face and you don't yet have the equipment to handle them.

Like most games of its type, 7D2D uses a free aiming system. Headshots are king, but can be difficult to obtain because of the jerky movements zombies make. Once you learn how to aim, or once you craft or loot a scope, you'll have no problem taking out the shambling undead from a distance.

Nothing is more satisfying than a baseball bat to a zombie noggin, though.

Multiplayer combat works similarly to PvE in that you hit the other person until they die.

One feature that 7D2D has that I rarely see elsewhere: auto-attacking turrets and robotics. Build a drone to help heal you, or build shotgun turrets to shoot down zombies and protect your base.

7 Days to Die Quest/Mission System

After the intro quest that walks you through the basics of survival, the game leaves you to figure things out yourself. Quests are picked up at traders, which are points of interest in the game where you can buy or sell stuff. Quests are a great way to obtain amazing gear early on, and they just get better as you complete them.

When you approach a trader, hit 'E' to interact, and select the "Do you have any jobs?" option to open up their list of missions.

Quests are split into multiple types: clear an area of zombies, fetch an item, fetch an item while killing zombies, restore power, establish a trade route (visit another trader), or dig up buried supplies. You can improve the rewards you get from these quests by putting points into the appropriate perks.

Missions automatically increase in difficulty as you complete more of them.

This system gets repetitive, especially if the game is repeatedly giving you one or two mission types.

7 Days to Die Graphics

It isn't going to blow your mind with realism, but it still looks decent enough that you can lose hours just tinkering around.

7D2D will run on its lowest graphics settings on a machine that is close to, but doesn't meet, the minimum system requirements. It's recommended to have at least 12 GB RAM, a graphics card with 4 GB dedicated video memory, a 3.2 Ghz Quad Core CPU or better, and at least 15 GB hard drive space. With a handful of mods, it still clocks in at under 20 GB and scratches my survival itch without breaking my hard drive.

Unlike some games (ARK, I'm looking at you).

Do not pet the zombies.

Zombies look semi-realistic, with shiny gore and jerky movements. The illusion gets broken when the zombies die and ragdoll physics take over, or a rabbit glitches as it dies and the corpse goes zooming across the desert.

7D2D's graphics are decent for an early access game. They aren't AAA-level, but they don't have to be. You can and will get absorbed in whatever you're doing, and you won't have to have a $3,000 system to enjoy it.

7 Days to Die Developer

The Fun Pimps was founded in 2012 and started developing 7 Days to Die over Thanksgiving dinner. Each developer has extensive experience in the gaming industry, and the company has been very open to ideas put forward by the community.

Features brought up by players get discussed and implemented on a regular basis, and if they aren't, then the modding community is right on it. There have been weeks where multiple fix-it patches have gone out to deal with bugs, with most major issues getting fixed not long after they've been found and researched.

Bug fixes come out on a regular basis, with no more than two months between small patches (usually) and a maximum of 8 months between major content drops.

7 Days to Die Price

7D2D retails for $24.99 USD and goes on sale for 60-70% off during major Steam sales—it was $5.99 in March 2023. Unless you're desperate to scratch that zombie-shooting itch, there's no reason that you have to buy it at full price.

Mac and Linux users are able to play the game, too, and it's available on Xbox One and Playstation 4. Console versions haven't been updated since 2017 due to the closure of Telltale Games, and in November 2022 it was announced work is being done to port the game to Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, so stay tuned.

15. Craft a lot of ammo

Don't get caught with your pants down, or with your ammo at 0.

Every shot uses one unit of ammo, no matter what weapon you're using. Every time an auto turret takes a shot, it also uses a unit of ammo. Once auto turrets run out of ammo, they stop working. Once you run out of ammo, you die.

Yes! This is obvious and it's something that bears repeating: if you want to survive during the apocalypse, you have to keep a healthy supply of ammo.

Bullets, arrows, and crossbow bolts stack up to 300 unless you're using inventory mods. Bullets take bullet tips and casings; shotgun shells take buckshot and paper; both take gunpowder. Arrows are simple: stones or iron or steel arrowheads, wood, and feathers.

How to get ammo:

Craft most ammo in the workbench. Stone and iron arrows and crossbow bolts can be crafted from your inventory.
Obtain it from a trader. The price depends on your perks and buffs.
Loot it from containers.
Get ammo from air drops.
Complete quests. Ammo is sometimes among the quest reward options.

14. Prepare your supplies ahead of time

A balanced diet.

Make sure you have repair materials, food, and medicine stashed away ahead of time, because realizing you need something during a horde attack is too little, too late..

Hearty foods like Bacon and Eggs (Master Chef recipes are amazing) will serve you better in the long run because they recover more health and hunger than basic charred/grilled meat. Water is easy to obtain. Buffing drinks like beer are worth collecting because they make you kick more ass.

There's no simpler way to put it, y'all.

How to make sure you have a supply surplus:

Loot everything. Every container, every drop, whatever you can carry. Your inventory will expand considerably once you unlock vehicles.
Sell what you don't need, scrap trash, and store the scrap.
Do quests as often as you can and select what you need from the rewards.
Grow crops. They don't need to be watched, zombies won't destroy them, and they provide a source of food materials.

In short, just play the game.

13. Spike traps are cheap and efficient carnage

Extreme pain in 3, 2, 1…

Spike traps and barbed wire fences are great for softening up zombies before they get to you. Zombies don't care if they're running directly into danger, so you can place these things in their path and save some ammo.

These traps need to be repaired or replaced as they break because they wear out as they damage zombies. Listening to them growl and groan as they stab themselves is worth the extra work.

Spike traps are effective for dealing with running zombies because they'll slow the critters down and have a chance to dismember them. They're good defenses well into late-game, and they're really cheap to craft: wood spikes cost 20 wood, iron spikes need 4 forged iron.

To make and use spike traps:

Open your crafting window and search 'spike'.
Choose how many you want to make by typing in the quantity in the crafting window, or using the arrows.
Click 'craft'.
Once they're crafted, equip the spikes and right-click to place them the same way you would any other block. Rotate with the scroll wheel or left-click.

12. Don't rely on just one layer of protection

Plates, beams, more plates…

7 Days to Die gives you many different options for your building blocks: if you can dream it, you can build it. A habit you'll want to get into is adding extra 'padding' to your builds, which strengthens them against the zombie hordes. It's harder to break three layers of cobblestone than one layer.

It doesn't matter what the block thickness is, either. You can coat a cube with square plates on one side and you'll still have double the HP of a single wall. I like to lay down my initial wall, then add plates to the outside so they're flush with the original. If I want to be really extra, I'll add another layer inside. As things break, they get repaired and replaced.

How to pick different block shapes:

First, search 'shape' in the crafting window. Depending on your progress in the game, you'll have Frame Shapes, Wood Shapes, Cobblestone Shapes, Concrete Shapes, or Steel Shapes.
Decide how many you want and click 'Craft'.
Equip your block stack.
Hold 'R' to open the radial menu and click the shapes menu button.
From here, scroll through all the different shapes. They're even sorted into categories, and you can use the search function to find the perfect fit.

11. Remember that zombies can jump—and climb

Zombies are able to climb ladders and jump up obstacles that are one block high. They are also able to jump on top of each other and stack, which they will do in a nightmare-inducing tacting to get your juicy brains..

Let's say you've taken refuge in a water tower. You've knocked off the bottom two blocks of the ladder. The only way to go is up—or smash the tower beneath you.

Most will scatter and beat up the tower, but you will also notice zombies piling up below the ladder. Once some are able to reach it, they climb the rest of the way.

Freaky, huh?

How to curb zombies' climbing and jumping habits:

Don't let your ladders touch the ground. Knock the bottom two blocks off, so you can jump to climb, but they can't.
Set up spike traps under the ladder, making it difficult for them to stack without injuring themselves. This will also help you with the kills.
Block the bottom half of passageways with easy-to-adjust blocks like hatches. Open the hatches to slow the zombies down. While they're busy beating it up, you can shoot them. Close the hatches when they aren't needed.

10. Make strategic use of the Robotic Sledge and Robotic Turret

The power of the burning shaft mod.

The earliest turrets you can make are the Robotic Sledge and Robotic Turret. The sledge is kind of like a battering ram for zombies. The robotic turret shoots approaching enemies. Both require you to be in range for them to run, and as soon as you're out of range, they stop working—only one at a time of each can be active.

With 5 points in the Robotics Inventor perk, you can run two Robo-Turrets and a sledge.

Sledges are great for knocking back incoming zombies, especially if placed beside a ladder or stairway. These robots pack a punch and get better as you upgrade the perk. Install a Weighted Head Mod and a Burning Shaft Mod to get more bang for your buck—and stunned, flaming baddies.

The Robo-Turret uses ammo that can be crafted from your inventory and is really cheap to make. Place one to assist mowing down zombies, or place two once you have the perk. Basic turret ammo costs only 3 scrap iron per unit.

How to place a Robotic Turret in sentry mode:

Equip the turret.
Right-click to trigger placement mode. Move the turret around until it turns green, which means you're allowed to put it there..
Right-click to place the turret.
To pick the turret back up so it can be reloaded, right-click on it when it's down. This will put it back into your inventory.

9. Invest in Auto Turrets as soon as possible

Nothing makes it up to the door.

The biggest advantage of SMG and Shotgun Auto Turrets is that they will operate without you present as long as they're powered up and have ammo. The disadvantage is that they use the same ammo you do in your guns (9mm for SMG and shotgun shells, respectively) and they require electricity to run. These turrets cannot be moved once placed, unless you're using a land claim block.

But they do their job very well.

Exactly like the shotgun, the Shotgun Auto Turret is meant to be used up close and personal. Its target range is 15 blocks versus the SMG's 30. Which one you use will be up to personal preference. Mix and match. They will operate while you aren't home, keeping your belongings safe from strangers and wandering hordes.

Some things to note: when facing Demolisher zombies, turrets are very likely to make them explode; turrets MUST be installed upright to work, even though you can install them horizontally; and if you place too many turrets, you may lose things like containers and crops because the game will freak out and objects could disappear. Remember the randomly disappearing vehicle glitch? Kinda like that.

How to load your Auto Turret:

Interact with it by pressing 'E'.
Drag your ammunition to the ammunition slots. Each slot holds up to 300 rounds.
Click the 'lock' button. This locks ammo in place and the turret will not fire otherwise. You can't add more ammo or remove what's there until you unlock it again.
You can also set the line of sight for the turret by clicking the camera display on the left side of the HUD. It will switch to a black-and-white view, just move the cone around to change what it takes for targets to piss off your turret.

8. Keep your enemy close, and blade traps even closer

Fans from hell.

Blade traps are huge and expensive:. they take up a 3 x 3 space, need a power source, and require steel to repair them..

Few things are more satisfying than creating a zombie blender.

The most effective ways to use them are by mounting one on top of another like a twisted sandwich of death, or mounting it on walls as pictured above. The 'sandwich of death' requires placing one trap on the ceiling and one on the floor directly below that. As zombies pass by, they get cut up from two different levels.

This takes care of block-high zombies like crawlers and dogs, prevents the creation of more crawlers, and can decapitate walkers.

Blade traps will need to be repaired during horde nights—which is all the more reason to set them up as your last line of defense. One above your shooting perch helps clean up zombies while they try to beat the snot out of you.

How to make blade traps:

Make sure you have leveled your 'Advanced Engineering' perk to 3.
Have the following materials in your inventory for each blade trap: 10 forged iron, 10 forged steel, 8 mechanical parts, 6 electrical parts, and 10 oil.
Search 'Blade Trap' in the crafting window. Choose how many you want to make, and click 'craft'.
Place traps by right-clicking where you want them to go.

7. Plant mines around your base to soften up the horde

Accidental explosions are just a bonus.

Land mines are a good early-game defense because the most basic type can be crafted in your inventory from a handful of scrap, some gunpowder, nails, and duct tape. Basic zombies are annihilated when they step on it.. A bunch of 'em hitting a mine field at the same time is beautiful, beautiful carnage.

The damage and explosion range goes up with the better mines, and there's a 33% chance for them to detonate if caught in another explosion—so it's rare for a single zombie to set off a chain reaction. Not unheard of, though.

Mines are best used by placing them around the outside of your base, away from the outer wall, as a buffer between your base and incoming hostiles.

Or around your friends while they're offline.

How to use land mines:

Craft them by searching 'mine' in the crafting window (or in the workbench, if using higher-tier explosives)
Equip them and go to where you want to place them.
Right-click to put them on the ground. Back away slowly. If you step on them, you'll likely die and have to start over again with placement.
Go out and repeat the process after they've been trampled by zombies.

6. Use hatches and railings to protect yourself

It's hard to believe that something so simple is such a headache for zombies.

Hatches, while 'open', will stop zombies in their tracks if they can't jump over them. This works to your advantage in a long hallway—they're stuck beating the hell out of that block while you shoot.

Use railings, selected from shape blocks, to create barriers as well. You can shoot through the gaps in the railings without damaging the block, and they possess the same health as their material's solid cube. Place railings back-to-back to double their strength.

How to effectively use short blocks to slow zombies:

Place a railing directly in front of your shooting position. Add a narrow block, like a plate, on the ceiling directly above, flush with the top block. This helps keep shorter zombies from coming in. A short pillar or a second railing on top accomplishes the same task.
Set up hatches on the blocks directly in front of the railing, along the route the zombies (should) take. If you do not have a hallway set up, then don't place the hatches. Expect to repair your railing while you fight, instead.
Yes, you can reverse this set-up and it still works: railing at the far end of the hallway, hatches along the length toward where you're hiding.

5. Don't underestimate the power of throwable explosives

Ragdoll physics in action.

Zombies like to bunch up during horde nights. With just one point in Demolitions Expert, you can craft the cheap-and-effective pipe bomb to take them out in droves—once you have a workbench.

Why pipe bombs and not molotov cocktails? Pipe bombs do approximately 253 points of entity damage without adding any multipliers or resistances: that's an insta-kill for basic baddies. A molotov just sets them on fire. You're less likely to blow yourself up with a molotov, but you aren't going to dismember a boatload of zombies or experience the joys of 7 Days' ragdoll physics with one.

Of course, if you like fire… have fun! Just don't drop your bottle of fire at your feet.

You can also use grenades and contact grenades, just keep in mind that their range is greater at 5 blocks for entities—so don't be a weenie, throw that sucker as far as you can.

How to throw explosives:

Equip the item. Your character's hand will now be holding the explosive.
Prepare the item by right-clicking. In grenades, this pulls the pin. On dynamite (best for clearing blocks) and pipe bombs, it lights the fuse.
Hold the left mouse button to charge your throw. The longer you hold, the farther it will go. With pipe bombs, you have 4 seconds after lighting it before it explodes in your hand.
Let it fly! Enjoy the fruits of your labor.

4. Build multiple outposts with supply caches

Hide your stuff wherever you like, mark it on your map so you'll find it later.

Having a back-up plan in case everything goes to hell is just the smart thing to do.

Whether they're placed by your world's various traders or peppered in the wilderness around your main base, setting up supply caches will help you recover a lot faster when things go to hell..

You won't need to turn these locations into impenetrable fortresses. If that's your thing, go for it. Instead, you'll have a chest with enough basics to get you back into fighting shape so you can take back what's yours (or so you don't just drop dead as soon as you set foot outside).

What to include in your outposts:

Wooden chests are basic as hell, but get the job done. You only need one of them per outpost.
Your preferred ranged and melee weapons at the highest quality you can craft (or get).
At least one stack of ammo for your ranged weapon. If making bunches of ammo to scatter around the countryside doesn't work for you, then just stick to your melee weapon.
Food. If you're still early game, go for whatever you can make. 10-20 of them will help recover lost health and boost your stats back to where you want them. The most accessible foods are corn bread, grilled/charred/boiled meat, and bacon and eggs. The best foods to stock without relying on canned foods are stews and pies. The best-hydrating drinks in the game are yucca juice and yucca juice smoothie. In a pinch, just have something.
Repair kits. Get what gear you have left back into fighting shape, and be able to keep your tools sharp for taking back your base.
Medicine. First aid bandages, first aid kits, or painkillers for recovering health and antibiotics for dealing with infection.

3. Repair and upgrade often, at least between every major horde

Nailed it.

All that stands between you and the ravenous dead is whatever you've built to hold them back. Once that fails, especially when dealing with Blood Moon Horde, you take the risk of being overrun. Injuries pile up, the dead take you down, you lose some XP and have to figure out what to do.

You can repair while defending against the horde—and you'll likely have to do some repairs during the event. It gets harder and harder to juggle this as the days go by, making it important to repair your builds and replenish anything that's broken before the next swarm.

How to repair your builds:

Have the appropriate materials in your inventory: wood, cobblestone rocks, concrete mix, forged steel, etc.
Equip a Stone Axe, Taza's Stone Axe, Claw Hammer, or Nail Gun, and right-click on the damaged block.
Hold the right mouse button until the block is at max 'health', then move on to the next.
Upgrading works the exact same way.

2. Understand how Blood Moon Hordes work

Our favorite medical trader knows the Blood Moon really well. Be like Jen.

A Blood Moon Horde is an event that happens, by default, every 7 days. It consists of a zombie attack followed by multiple waves of zombies, and they all know where you are. No amount of sneaking will save you.

This is the mechanic that drives your gameplay.

On the morning of a Blood Moon, the day indicator in the HUD turns red; later in the evening the sky turns red, too. It's a warning that you're about to have a bad time. It's usually stormy weather, the event is announced by thunder, and the first attacks happen around 22:00.

Everything goes back to normal around 4:00 the next morning the internal clock starts counting down again. This will repeat every 7 days, unless you change the game settings when you choose to load your save file.

What makes the Blood Moon Horde special is, aside from them knowing exactly where you are at all times, the zombies are stronger. You'll see more zombies than usual, they'll be faster, and you're more likely to see the special zombies. What you see depends on your game stage and settings, with the hordes getting bigger as time goes on.

How does understanding Blood Moon Horde mechanics help you?

It gives you a timeline to follow, so you know exactly when you have to have everything repaired and stocked up before you hunker down.
You know what signs and signals to watch for, so you know when to take cover. Sky turning red? Get to safety and get ready to fight!
It helps you judge what strategies will work for you. If you know what's coming, and how hard it's going to hit you, you can better decide how you're going to ride it out.

1. Think like a zombie

Think like a corpse! Corpses love convenience.

The key to defending yourself in 7D2D is understanding how the game's zombies work.

Zombies will use the most direct route to get to you. This is especially true of Blood Moon Horde zombies, who always know exactly where you are.

Tightrope that leads to a short wall, and you're standing behind that short wall? They'll walk the tightrope.

Tiny building with you standing at the back staring at the door? They'll bash in the wall directly behind you if they can reach it.

Veteran survivors use zombies' pathing to our advantage by providing one direct line to access us. The reason you see so many simple horde bases like the one above (by IzPrebuilt) is because they work. By setting yourself up high, out of reach from below, with zombie access being the comically-obvious stairway to hell, you're waving an "eat me" sign.

Except they can't eat you. They just think they can.

Very beautiful. Very powerful.

So, how do you use this information?

Put your base up high (at least 5 blocks high) or surround it with an open pit (at least 5 blocks deep). If using a pit, make sure there is a way out that lets zombies run around and back toward their entrance. This keeps them on the path you want them to follow and prevents them from trying to make their own.
If using a ladder to access your base, have it stop two blocks above the ground so zombies can't use the ladder, but you can. If your entrance is at 'ground level', use a drawbridge (that you can raise when you're inside) or set down frames that you can quickly pick up.
Provide zombies with one active entrance into your base at a time (surprise, it's a trap). If your base is up on a pedestal or otherwise up high, give them a stairway to a 'killing hall' lined with hatches to slow them down. This buys you time to kill the zombies before they reach you.
If your base is surrounded by a pit, give them a narrow bridge. As they try to pile up on that bridge they'll fall off and have to run back, which also buys you time to deal with them.
Let them see you, but make yourself inaccessible with hatches or shorter blocks. I like setting up railings for this purpose. With your frame block in hand, hold 'R' to open the radial menu and click the top button to select the shape type. Type 'railing' in the search and pick it. You can shoot through them without destroying the block.
Now sit back and wait.

Basic, but oh, so satisfying

Wrap a swath of barbed wire around the melee weapon of your choice and go to town on all incoming zombies! The Barbed Wire mod causes a bleeding effect that can really help out in tight situations where you might get cornered. Any little bit of extra damage helps, after all.

5. Shotgun Tube Extender Mod

Just like the Drum Magazine Mod, the Shotgun Tube Extender Mod increases your loaded ammo capacity, so you have that much more firepower to fight back the undead. This mod in particular increases the magazine capacity by 37.5% which means that you will have 2-3 more rounds added. But those extra rounds loaded could mean the difference between life and death.

This mod increases your stability while aiming down the sights while increasing the sway and spread of rounds when firing from the hip. Increasing the spread of your shotgun may affect more zombies with little damage, but it should be in your best interest to eliminate threats as quickly as possible, shouldn’t it?

Alpha 20 brought about several significant changes to the game. One of which was how looting was done and what items you would be able to find. Currently, it is all based on one thing - your “Loot Stage” which is found under your stats, in the character menu. The items found (and quality of items) can be broken up into 4 different Tiers. In terms of just weapons, Tier 1 (with a Loot Stage up to 39) Allows you to loot basic things like Clubs, and Pipe weapons. Tier 2, (With a Loot Stage of 40 or higher) opens up the possibility of finding Rifles, Double-barrel Shotguns, and AK-47s. Tier 3 (with a Loot Stage of 80 or higher) opens up the possibility of finding Tactical Rifles, Pump Action Shotguns, and Revolvers. Finally Tier 4 (With a loot stage of 118 or higher) You have a chance to find the highest-tiered weapons like M60s, Auto-Shotguns, and Sniper Rifles.

This is ranked as one of my favorites since it is excellent at crowd control. Kite a bunch of zombies together into a tight group, chuck a grenade or two, and you’re done! These are especially useful if you can figure out how to get zombies into a pit. Just make sure you get enough space between you and the blast radius, or you’ll regret it.

As you progress through the game, you will find and craft various kinds of armor - which is vital to your survival. However, while your armor rating may go up with each piece of armor (whether it be Leather, Iron or Steel,) your mobility and stamina will decrease. This means that you will move slower and lose stamina quicker while running, jumping, or using melee weapons/tools.. Each kind of armor has a different effect on your armor rating and movement. Heavy armor is the worst culprit. Negate all of the stamina and mobility reduction from armor with the Customized Fittings Mod.

Become an absolute tank with Banded Armor Plating Mods on all of your armor pieces. With the increase to your armor rating by 2, it would take quite a lot of punishment to put you down.. When you are sitting under the scorching sun with too much clothing and armor on, you will get the ‘Too Hot’ debuff and eventually the ‘Sweltering’ debuff. This reduces your hydration at a much quicker rate, and you’ll start to get dehydrated, which leads to unpleasant things like loss of stamina and death.
