Harrison Ford, Ryan Gosling and Oscar winner Jared Leto are starring in the upcoming October blockbuster Blade Runner 2049. Here are five fast facts about the film.

It Has an Interesting Plot

Blade Runner 2049 is about a young blade runner (Ryan Gosling) who goes on a search to find the former blade runner Rick Deckard. A blade runner is someone who hunts for replicants. Replicants are violent robots who look like human beings. Deckard has been missing for the past 30 years. And Gosling’s character needs Deckard to help him save society from going into chaos. In the original Ridley Scott film, a group of these replicants committed a bloody mutiny.

It's Not a Remake

Blade Runner 2049 is not a remake of the original 1982 critically acclaimed film Blade Runner, also starring Harrison Ford. This is actually a sequel to the original film. The first one took place in the year 2019, while this one, like the title suggests, takes place 30 years later in 2049.

We're Getting Old and New Characters

Harrison Ford will be reprising his role as Rick Deckard from the original sci-fi classic. Ryan Gosling will costar as new character Officer K. And Jared Leto will be portraying a character named Niander Wallace.

No Ridley Scott This Time

Acclaimed sci-fi director Ridley Scott did not return to direct this sequel. Instead, the director is Denis Villeneuve. Villeneuve was nominated for an Oscar for directing the 2016 sci-fi film Arrival, which starred Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner. He hasn't done much else as far as science-fiction goes, though. But he does appear to be a science-fiction fan, considering his favorite film is 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The Movie Was Not Filmed Anywhere in the U.S.

One main filming studio for the film was in Budapest, Hungary. They also filmed at Korda Studios in Etyek, Hungary. And the crew filmed aerial shots in both Spain and Iceland.

Returning to L.A. and Its Dystopian Future

It's been nearly 35 years since audiences were introduced to the 1980s, sci-if adventure of Blade Runner from director Ridley Scott and starring famed actor Harrison Ford. Set in a dystopian future where synthetic beings known as "replicants" were designed for off-Earth labor, those returning to the planet were considered dangerous and hunted down for the safety of humanity.

Looked at as a cult-classic with its iconic music, production design and gritty look into the future, fans both old and new are getting a chance to experience this world for a second time in October, 2017 with the release of Blade Runner 2049.

Blade Runner looks to return to what made its original 80’s debut turn into a cult classic and give everything fans could hope for over 30 years later.

What We've Seen So Far

Starring Ryan Gosling in the new lead role, Harrison Ford is also set to make his return. While the exact story is still obviously under wraps, viewers were already treated to an action packed and dramatic trailer woven with familiar, and goosebump-bringing music that shows its direct connection to the original.

While set even further in the future so as to coincide with the plot and Harrison Ford's real-world aging, Gosling is seen in the trailer wearing clothes and wielding a gun most iconic to Ford's character in the original. It can be inferred that Gosling himself is a Blade Runner and, as shown in the footage, seeks out Ford for answers to questions he has in regards to the unknown plot. Other characters are also shown, such as Jared Leto in what appears to be the antagonist role of the leader of the Tyrell Corporation -those responsible for creating the replicants in the original story.

While half the fun in seeing a movie is not knowing the mystery and details behind the narrative, enough assumptions from the trailer can be made while also helping to build hype and excitement for its release. The trailer leaves tons of speculation as to what might unfold, but it looks to be action packed and as dramatic as ever without going over the top.

What Made the Original So Great

When the first Blade Runner debuted in 1982, it was met with a mix of positive and negative acclaim. While some critics felt the pacing was off, many others praised it for its visuals, set composition, dramatic story and iconic soundtrack. Having since becoming an 80’s sci-fi cult classic, the movie is still one of the greatest of its time in both quality and quantity. With Harrison Ford in his prime and as the lead role, it’s a must watch for any sci-fi fan.

The story felt action packed while also carrying a lot of deeper meaning, thematic complexity and even won the prestigious Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation. To this day, it remains a leading example of the neo-noir genre. Ridley Scott regards Blade Runner as "probably" his most complete and personal film and in 1993, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". Now regarded by critics as one of the best all-time sci-fi movies, 2049 will have a lot to live up to, but if the trailer (featured below) is any indication of what fans can expect, things are looking better than ever.

Blade Runner 2049 will take more than just nostalgia to live up to its predecessor

It’s 30 years after the events of the first Blade Runner (1982) movie. New blade runner on the block, LAPD Officer K, uncovers disturbing secrets that could mark the end of humanity. Digging deeper for answers, Officer K crosses paths with Rick Deckard, who’s been living off the grid for the last thirty years.

Before we get too excited, let’s have a little throwback as to what made the original film so good in the first place.

As I’m sure everyone knows by this stage, Ridley Scott’s 1982 Blade Runner follows the story of Rick Deckard, an ex-blade runner, pulled back into the job to track down and “retire” (bioengineered Androids, essentially) who smuggled themselves onto earth. One of the most debated issues surrounding the film is whether or not Deckard himself is a human, or a replicant. Philip K. Dick, author of the source material ‘Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep’ stated that he wrote Deckard as a human. In 2002, Scott came out to reveal that his Deckard was a replicant. ConsideringScott’s involvement in Blade Runner 2049, I guess we’ll go with his version of Deckard.

Blade Runner was praised not only for it’s writing and directing, but also for it’s creative use of miniature sets (which, in my opinion, trump CG effects) and it’s neo-noir styles, beautifully shot by cinematographer Jordan Cronenweth.

So, let’s talk about some of the new talent on board

After a longwinded preproduction process of talent pouring in and out, the key players were finally revealed. We have Ryan Gosling playing LAPD Officer K, as well as Harrison Ford returning to reprise his role as Rick Deckard.

In addition to Gosling, there is Dave Bautista, of WWE & Guardians of The Galaxy fame, Mackenzie Davis (Black Mirror, The Martian) and Jared Leto (who you all oughta know).

Ripples of discomfort formed amidst fanboys and concerned cinephiles across the globe when Ridley Scott decided to stepped down from directing, and chose to produce instead. But faith was restored when Denis Villeneuve stepped up.

Why Villeneuve is a good choice to direct

"I know that every single fan will walk into the theater with a baseball bat.” Well, he’s not wrong.

Director Denis Villeneuve is fully aware of the pressures of making a sequel to a beloved sci-fi classic. But come on, the guy’s given us Arrival and Sicario - he hasn’t been wrong yet. Not to mention one of the prime reasons Gosling hopped on board was due to the fact that Villeneuve was at the helm.

Villeneuve has a deep appreciation and respect for the original film, but is also more than capable of transcending expectations and delivering a quality movie. But like any sane movie lover, I say this with fingers crossed.

Appeasing to the old, and appealing to the new: getting the balance right for the audience

Blade Runner 2049 will take place thirty years after the events of the first film, a world where the climate on Earth has gotten so bad that the atmosphere has become toxic; clean water is scarce and all precipitation is acidic.

I think this angle brings a fresh new perspective to the Blade Runner universe and allows the story to flourish in its own context, as opposed to standing in the shadow of its predecessor. It also focuses mainly on Gosling’s character, Officer K, a blade Runner new to the job - a character whom a new audience can more easily identify with.

Gosling will take over from Ford to play our new leading blade runner.

For old audiences, having Ford play Deckard in it is good enough to warrant a watch (at least). The film won’t cash in on fan service at the cost of a compelling new story, because it shouldn’t. In my opinion, what drew fans to love Scott’s Blade Runner film was its original story and original concept.

The amount of care and thought that is being put into Blade Runner 2049 can only make one believe that they will approach the sequel with just as much originality. And, if that pays off, even the most hardheaded hater will have to show respect this coming fall on October 6.
