[Top 15] Black Desert Online Best Graphics Settings

Black Desert Online is one of the most demanding games when it comes to graphics and textures, each strand of hair is accounted for and we all know how one can take several hours customizing a character due to the sheer amount of detail Pearl Abyss had placed in their design system and even more so with the game’s overall environment and world setting.

Unlike other MMORPGs, BDO has virtually no loading screens and waiting periods, which makes the game hefty in terms of specs, not to mention how BDO is a sandbox-fantasy oriented game. There is almost no limit to what one can do in-game.

Which is why we’re here to help out on how you can optimize BDO’s settings to run smoothly, even on an entry-level gaming PC or laptop.

Author’s Note: I came from an entry level gaming laptop before shifting to a device with better specs just recently so I’m pretty much a pro at this.

Ah, yes. BDO's myriad of graphic settings never cease to amaze me.

1. Texture Quality

The Problem: Do you mind having a bit of grain or do you like things smoother?
How This Setting Fixes things: Texture qualities adjust the overall clarity of the game, you’ll notice that everything is smoother or more pristine when this setting is high and if it's much lower, there would be some grain or pixels visible.
How This Setting Solves things: This setting comes in 3 options, with the most preferred setting at medium. Fixing it to low or high would reduce the clarity but improve the rendering of the game.
How to Tweak: Hit settings and under texture quality, press low or medium. This would greatly affect how BDO renders or loads the environment and your character overall.

Every. Strand. Of. Hair. Counts.

2. Graphics

The Problem: If you’ve an entry-level gaming laptop or PC, it would be best to tone down the overall graphics as this affects EVERYTHING within the game; from the trees to the strands of hair on your character, the graphics setting deals with every single detail you see in-game.
How This Setting Fixes things: This setting has 7 options, from the lowest possible setting or optimal, to very high settings that work on better rigged devices. It would be best to set this at either optimal at the lowest and medium at the highest possible setting as it would greatly improve BDO’s performance at the small of seeing things at a lesser but still stunning quality.
How This Setting Solves things: Choosing a setting that’s suited to what your device can handle makes the rendering and loading on the environment and NPCs much faster and less laggy overall.
How to Tweak: Hit settings and play around with the Graphics tab. Anywhere between optimal and medium is advised, but if you’re feeling a bit risky, then try out and see if high also works for you.

3. High-end Graphics

The Problem: Upon the first-time boot up of BDO, the setting for this is almost always activated. The setting for this comes in only 2 options; Remastered Mode and Ultra Mode. These settings are meant for high-end devices and most people don’t notice to tweak this until much later.
How This Setting Fixes things: Uncheck Remastered Mode and everything will be MUCH FASTER for you as it lessens the resource consumption on your PC or laptop.
How This Setting Solves things: Your device will ultimately perform better as Remastered and Ultra Mode are meant for higher-end PCs and not entry-level devices. Unchecking this will optimize the game to what your actual settings are.
How to Tweak: Make sure none of the two tabs under High-end Graphics are checked.

I have my AA settings set to FXAA so you can see some smoothness to the detail of the La Breve apparel.

4. Anti-aliasing

The Problem: It’s the little things that count and Anti-aliasing is something you won't notice unless you stand still. Anti-aliasing deals with pixels, if you look very closely, having AA would make everything “smoother” and less “squared”. Without AA, you'll notice how everything has an edge upon inspection.
How This Setting Fixes things: AA takes up extra effort when it comes to resources, it’ll tweak everything down to the smallest detail so having this turned off would be a great help in reducing your laptop or PC’s resource usage.
How This Setting Solves things: Disabling or tweaking AA won’t make much of a difference but it will improve the performance and rendering of the game, especially if you’re travelling long distances on a horse.
How to Tweak: the AA setting actually allows for you to see the difference if you decide to disable it so it is recommended for you to see what works or if you want it removed completely.

I have the enhanced shadows turned off so everything looks somewhat rough.

5. SSAO

The Problem: Shadows. That’s it, that’s the problem. Basically, it boils down to if you want to see the shadows on EVERYTHING.
How This Setting Fixes things: Do we actually need to see the shadows? I don’t think so. Everything will cast a shadow especially when it's midday in the game, so imagine how your device renders and uses up resources to render JUST SHADOWS when it can actually go to rendering other components. (Like the ever important marketplace director)
How This Setting Solves things: It’s just a shadow, but when you’re playing a graphics heavy game like BDO, everything matters. Turning this setting off would allot more resources to loading and rendering other aspects of the game like shop NPCs and whatnot.
How to Tweak: This setting actually shows you what things look like without the shadows so you can see for yourself on the settings if it works for you, and if not, you can choose to keep the shadows around.

6. Hit-effect

The Problem: This setting basically toggles the blink effect of your character when it receives damage. Instead of just standing still, it will react to attacks and other such aspects, it will show your character to flinch or twitch depending on what’s happening.
How This Setting Fixes things: I would say that players should keep this on in order to detect if your character is receiving damage from other players, mobs, or bosses since the character reacts to such movement.
How This Setting Solves things: I preferably like this turned on in order for me to see if I;m being attacked or damaged by mobs or players when I’m idle. Despite the added strain, it indeed is helpful in most moments.
How to Tweak: Just toggle it over at Graphics and Textures! I recommend you keep this on.

7. Depth of Field

The Problem: If you’re familiar with some photography terms, this is what we refer to as “Bokeh” or how the background is blurred so it focuses on just the character. Having this toggled blurs out the background with the focus being on your character having all the finer details.
How This Setting Fixes things: Depending on the camera angle or focal point, having this enabled blurs out the background which means less rendering and work for your laptop or PC.
How This Setting Solves things: It’ll ease the burden on your device when it comes to leading rendering as BDO’s entire environment is quite detailed, it would lessen clarity and other finer aspects when it comes to the game.
How to Tweak: Simply toggle this setting on the Graphics and Textures as it shows how things will look should you decide to toggle it on or not.

8. Auto-frame Optimization

The Problem: BDO can use up to 60fps when it comes to frame rates if you don’t toggle it to your liking.
How This Setting Fixes things: Auto-frame Optimization tweaks the settings for you in order for BDO to run at an acceptably smooth rate without compromising or putting a strain on your device. It will conform to the specs of your device and run it at the best your PC or laptop possibly can.
How This Setting Solves things: It fixes lags and frame rate drops to an extent which allows you to play smoothly.
How to Tweak: You can either toggle the Auto-frame Optimization setting or adjust the bar of the frame rate you want which is right under it.

9. Character Optimization

The Problem: It basically shows other players at a distance. It can be toggled to be highly visible or not so much.
How This Setting Fixes things: Character Optimization has a toggle setting of 10 to 50. Toggling it will allow you to adjust how near or far other players will appear to you as you get closer or farther to them.
How This Setting Solves things: If you don’t mind not seeing other players, then this is the setting for you. It lessens your view of other players to a considerable extent, though it still may come as a disadvantage as BDO is heavily reliant on PvP.
How to Tweak: Set the bar to your preference under the optimization setting according to your liking.

10. Hide other Adventurers

The Problem: This setting is especially helpful when it comes to world bosses as hundreds of players can show up at a time during designated boss appearances throughout the day.
How This Setting Fixes things: When you’re in for participating world bosses, hundreds of players come in from all over the world and for sure, you will LAG with the amount of players coming in. Toggling this feature makes everyone disappear which results in less rendering and lags.
How This Setting Solves things: BDO won’t automatically make everyone disappear upon activation of this setting but instead it waits until the game hits a specific amount of players before it turns on and makes everyone else disappear.
How to Tweak: Shift + F5. You are very welcome.

11. Performance Optimization

The Problem: More memory is always welcome and BDO will abuse your memory until the very last drop.
How This Setting Fixes things: Performance optimization will automatically fix your settings for you in order for your PC or laptop to run BDO at the best possible setting it can manage. It will run the game much better but at the risk of your device overheating.
How This Setting Solves things: Toggling this setting will allow you to retain your customized settings that you've fixed to your liking.
How to Tweak: The performance settings hold the optimization tab which you can freely toggle on and off to your liking.

12. Low power Option

The Problem: Sort of like a phone’s low power mode, Low Power Option minimizes your device’s memory usage to the very lowest it can manage without sacrificing the performance of the game.
How This Setting Fixes things: If you’re running a little low on battery or whatnot, Low Power Option optimizes the game to suit your battery levels and specs. It will run BDO at an optimal level enough to play the game “smoothly”.
How This Setting Solves things: As mentioned earlier, this is like a low power mode but for games. This setting works best for laptops as they don’t have a dedicated power supply compared to PCs.
How to Tweak: The optimization tab on the settings holds the Low power Option. Just tick it if necessary if you’re a laptop user!

13. Attack Decisions

The Problem: It basically tells you if you’ve made either a Critical or Back Attack. A special text appears per attack to tell you what occurred.
How This Setting Fixes things: Attack Decisions are an added effect and therefore takes up resources, even more so when you’re a Witch or Wizard with spells being more colorful in nature. Removing this lessens the work done by your computer and allocates more resources to your main attacks and effects.
How This Setting Solves things: With how much BDo relies on attack counts and combos, having this setting gone would be a great help as it would offer the player more vantage during a grind or PvP, as well as allocating more resources for your character and its attacks.
How to Tweak: On the optimization settings, it will show you how the game looks like without the Attack Decisions. Personally, I don’t think one would need it.

No. Nommers, you may not have belly rubs as the game does not allow for it.

14. Pets

The Problem: All players have the limit of summoning up to 5 pets which can pick up items, detect hostile mobs, and other advantages. Pets are mostly used during grinds and imagine if you’re in a party of 5 with everyone having their pets out. That makes 5 players and 25 pets.
How This Setting Fixes things: 5 pets is already a handful so imagine having more than 5. Since pets do follow you around and perform their own actions, this puts a strain on your device and lessens the resources allocated to more graphic heavy components of the game.
How This Setting Solves things:There are two options wherein you can toggle your friends’ pets and even your own. Most people toggle everyone else’s pets and have theirs set to visible.
How to Tweak: You may toggle this feature on the Workers and Pets setting.

15. Hide certain NPCs

The Problem: If you ever find yourself at Calpheon and notice how everything takes forever to render, it’s because Calpheon is a bustling city of NPCs and not everyone needs to be seen. There’s so many people that the rendering and loading of the NPCs can take ages.
How This Setting Fixes things: Hiding certain unimportant NPCs makes everything easier and much faster to render. You’ll only be seeing important NPCs who give out quests or sell items.
How This Setting Solves things: Calpheon city will not take more than 60 seconds to load, including the NPC you have to talk to over a quest.
How to Tweak: Simply toggle the setting to “off” and you’re all set.

[Top 5] Black Desert Online Best Horoscopes

Black Desert Online comes with a very extensive character creation process which can take a player hours in making of their character. From the hair length, eye colour and style, to very specific facial features; BDO indeed took into account the fully-detailed customization of their classes and characters.

Even the tiniest details can be tweaked to a player’s liking, but what is quite interesting in BDO is that the game has its very own set of “Horoscopes” which players can choose from.

In an overall view, BDO’s Horoscopes actually don’t make much of a dent in-game save for being a titleholder and giving your character a form of a “personality, but it does come with small benefits in the form of “Amity” or the relationships you form with non-playable characters.

There are 12 Horoscopes to choose from and they are as follows:

Boat – Free, Optimistic, Relaxed, Wanderer
Camel – Docile, Enduring, Patient, Witty
Dragon – Attentive, Exalted, Prestigious, Sensitive, Social
Elephant – Committed, Crass, Honorable, Strong, Trustworthy
Giant – Ambitious, Dreamer, Nimble, Observer
Goblin – Adaptable, Intelligent, Linguist, Materialistic, Opinionated
Hammer – Brave, Combative, Conservative, Cooperative, Righteous
Key – Attentive, Determined, Relaxed, Scholar
Owl – Naive, Stereotypical
Sealingstone – Careful, Ephemeral, Quaint, Secretive
Shield – Deliberate, Disciplined, Rational
Wagon – Ambitious, Calculating, Noble, Wealthy

When it comes to choosing a horoscope, there is actually no “best” option to pick as each sign has its own set of benefits within the game save for when it comes to gaining Amity.
Amity is the player’s reputation within the game and every NPC within BDO has a certain level of Amity towards you. The only thing left to do at this rate since a player already has a relationship with the NPC is to improve the Amity with them through conversations which normally costs varying amounts of energy. A single point of energy can be regained every 3 minutes so you don’t need to worry about running out, if you’re a little impatient then there are “Energy Regen” potions from shops and the Central Market. These potions cost a pretty penny but get the job done much more quickly.

Now here is where the real benefit of Amity comes along. As mentioned earlier, Amity is gained through conversations and knowledge, talking to various NPCs around the city will give you knowledge on characters, locations, items, etc.

If you click on the “Conversation” tab when you’re interacting with an NPC, it will bring you to a “Mini-game” of sorts wherein the game asks you to pick other NPCs to talk about. The more options and knowledge you have, the better chances of the NPC you are talking to spark a certain interest which results in Amity points which is usually indicated by a smiling blue face for success and a gray sad face for a failed attempt. Finding the right combination of knowledge is what makes you win the so-called mini-game as it would yield more Amity points compared to having failed attempts.

Maxing out an NPC’s Amity yields the occasional gift of items or gear and some valuable knowledge if you’re on a quest. But overall, the Horoscope system off BDO isn’t much to write home about, unless you’re the completionist type of gamer.

Is Black Desert Online a Better MMORPG Than World of Warcraft?

From the minds of Blizzard Entertainment and Pearl Abyss, which of these MMORPGs is the best?

When Black Desert Online finally had its worldwide release in 2016, many people pitted it against the timeless classic World of Warcraft. It’s become a standard now for new MMORPG games, as players ask – will this game be the one to kill of World of Warcraft for good? With the continued success of Black Desert almost a year after it took the world by storm, let’s compare them officially, and see just how well it comes up against the legend itself.

1. Graphics

Blizzard remind us just how awful the old Orcs were.

Let’s start with the most obvious difference between the two games – the graphics. When World of Warcraft released all the way back in 2004, the graphics it offered were the best we’d ever seen. Hopping off of games like Everquest, WoW gave us the most realistic world to date. However, these graphics have slowly gotten more updated as time has gone by, Blizzard even updated the player character models back in 2014 when the Warlords of Draenor expansion released.

But even these look outdated, with games going further like Black Desert does. Realism is an insane thing to master – and Black Desert Online has it down. Hell, there’s even details that WoW will never have, like snow settling on your clothing. The most advancement WoW has given us is moving grass when we pass through. Wow, neat.

2. The World

Maybe this world is bigger to the small folk?

For both of these games, the world really makes them. Without a good world to host your game, you’re running on fumes. World of Warcraft’s world had been in the making since 1994, and was one of the largest worlds in gaming when it released. The zones were recognisable, wildly different, and vibrant, making Azeroth one of the most interesting places to adventure in.

When you first get into Black Desert, a lot of the map is uncovered. The fact that you have to discover everywhere, and the time it can take you to travel on foot, make the world seem a lot bigger at first. A lot of the world is open water, and main cities and towns are a lot closer than the map makes them seem. In my opinion, WoW’s fast travel options like teleports make the world seem smaller, but in actuality, it’s a lot bigger than we know.

3. Combat

Hit it very hard!

There’s one thing that will always be different between these two games – the combat. World of Warcraft is the poster child for the simple MMO style, press 1, 2, 3, watch an animation, and that health bar magically starts to go down. Do it in the right order, and you’re pushing out the maximum DPS your class can do. Simple enough, right?

Combat to knock your socks off.

Well, unless the animation for spells like Rain of Fire still knock your socks off, perhaps you’re looking for a more. Black Desert certainly offers a little more out of your combat, with hundreds of spells and even more unlockable at soft cap. With keybindings that focus on LMB and RMB, with a few Fs occasionally, Black Desert’s combat design puts a new spin on what you expect from MMOs, and keeps you interested from beginning to end.

World of Warcraft combat: 2/5

4. PvP

We always lose this one…

When WoW released in 2004, PvP was only for the open world. World PvP reigned supreme, and if you were a newbie levelling in a contested zone, ganking wasn’t a new thing. Battlegrounds like Warsong Gulch and Alterac Valley were added in 2005, and since then, World PvP was on the decline. Blizzard tried to revive World PvP in 2014, with the 10th anniversary battleground Tarren Mill vs. Southshore, but it really wasn’t as good. I still have that sweet, sweet title, though.

Black Desert has always opted for an open world PvP style, with non-linear progression unlike what WoW provides today. Karma Points mirror what used to be WoW’s dishonorable kills, and have an impact on your standing with cities. Personally, I prefer the more linear model WoW has these days, but maybe that’s because I shake my fist at every ganker.

When you think about it, the fun factor of a game depends on your own desires. In my opinion, this separates whether you’ll believe Black Desert really is better than World of Warcraft. Black Desert offers a huge array of things to do. From gathering to breeding horses, if you’re a casual player or hardcore, you’ve got something interesting to do all day, every day.

However, if you want to be the best of the best – World of Warcraft is your ticket to a great game. It’s incredibly difficult to achieve this in Black Desert, with RNG based upgrades and a soft cap to awakening, which means no level cap and endless numbers to build on. If you’re out to just enjoy the journey, Black Desert is just what you’re looking for. Whereas, for World of Warcraft, all of your progression is linear, and the endgame is just a gateway to enjoying everything and becoming better, and better, and better.

And we’re not talking about merely good-looking NPCs or avatars… we mean drop-dead gorgeous, sexy, and sublimely elegant 3D humans (and in many cases, humanoids) who are so beautiful you’ll often find yourself wishing they were the real thing.

In this article we’re calling 11 MMORPGS with the Sexiest Female Characters, we list the games boasting the most alluring, most captivating of these ladies. So turn your air conditioners on at full blast, because things are about to get real hot!

11. Final Fantasy XIV

We all know what the Final Fantasy series is about: gorgeous-looking teens with fabulous hair, and ridiculously oversized swords.

Well, in Final Fantasy XIV, everyone gets to live out their, uh, fantasies. Not counting the creepy Lalafell (seriously, they look like evil, demonic dolls – Annabel would be proud!), all the races in Final Fantasy XIV are beautiful. Vindictus, also known as Mabinogi Heroes, is an action-packed MMORPG offering ten playable characters – five of whom are dangerous women so dazzling their enemies will be too busy admiring them to realize there’s a blade headed for their throats.

There’s Arisha, a tough battle witch who is as deadly with her sword as she is with her spells; Fiona, who will stick a sword into you, then bash your skull in with a shield; Vella, who won’t introduce you to her parents, but probably will to her dual swords if you misbehave; Evie, a young noblewoman known for her magic, and whose classy style will make you feel like a pauper; and Lynn, an agile lady whom you’ll probably never get close to, thanks to the very, very large spear she’s wielding. These lovely ladies may be delightful to the eye, but watching them make short work of their opponents on the battlefield is even more entrancing – it’s like watching a beautiful dance of death!

9. Bless Online

We’ve been keeping an eye on Bless Online, a spectacular-looking MMORPG set in a medieval fantasy realm. It’s got an amazing world, a fascinating story, and cool-looking races. Not to mention its ladies are looking mighty fine.

It’s got everything from sexy elven badasses to sexy cat girls. But Bless Online has something that other MMORPGs don’t have – something that we’re sure will get the furries doubly excited: sexy wolf people!

Yes, despite probably being related to canines, the Lupus are quite attractive. Their men are hulking, handsome beasts, so there’s a lot of eye candy for the women, as well!

8. Continent of the Ninth Seal

The world of Glanheim is in peril. The evil Nefer is bent on opening a rift to the Netherworld. Should he succeed, demonic armies shall swarm the peaceful lands.

Bah, who cares? Nefer can go kill himself, because we’ll be too busy admiring the magnificent beauties of Continent of the Ninth Seal to care about some pesky demonic legions.

While we’re loving the setting and the action-packed combat system, what we’re really digging is the game’s bevy of alluring women. From foxy vixens wielding fire and ice to elegant ladies brandishing blades large enough to split you in half, Continent of the Ninth Seal is packed with eye candy. This game has some of the sexiest female characters in the MMORPG, which makes us all the more excited to play it!

7. Kingdom Under Fire II

Kingdom Under Fire II blends MMORPG elements with the real-time strategy genre. Imagine having your own hero, and also being able to command your own troops. Will you go solo, cutting through hordes of enemies like some rage-fueled god of death? Or will you engage in massive battles, throwing your soldiers against the enemy like a furious tidal wave smashing against the beach?

War is great and all, but after the dust has settled, there’s nothing better than sitting back and enjoying the sight of Kingdom Under Fire II’s extraordinarily beautiful people. We’re telling you, this game has some enticing lookers.

Admittedly, some of the costumes for the women lean towards the “WTF” end of the spectrum. And certain… body parts... behave in ways that would make you think they have their own set of lungs and central nervous system. Questionable taste aside, this game has some of the sexiest female characters you’ll ever see in an MMORPG. So if that’s what you’re looking for, this is your game.

6. ArcheAge

ArcheAge is a fantasy MMORPG that aims to give players everything they want in an MMORPG, and then some. In addition to standard stuff like excellent combat, PvP, crafting, housing, etc., the game also boasts naval combat, farming (as in, gardening and planting tomatoes and stuff), a criminal system that allows players to become members of the jury and punish player criminals, and even using a glider to soar through the air.

As if the game can’t get any better, it’s also home to some of the most marvelous sights in game. And by “sights” we mean hot women (and men!). There are four races, including the charming Firran, who are, well, humanoid cats, and the exquisite Harani, who are this universe’s East Asians. The costumes range from the ravishing to the divine, and we’re glad to say they’re not all too ridiculous (although you’ll still spot a number of female knights with their bellies totally exposed).

5. Skyforge

Ever wanted to be a god? Well, in the free-to-play science fiction fantasy MMORPG Skyforge, you can be.

And what decent god would you make without followers? Skyforge allows you to gain followers, have as many classes as you want, and journey across a grand world filled with danger, mystery, and entrancing beauty.

Yes, the immortals of Skyforge are gorgeous. And for the most part, they’ve got a slick fashion sense, too. You want to look like a super hero? There’s a costume for that. How about a tough-as-nails soldier? There are clothes for that, too. You can make a character who looks like they’re going out for the night to some fancy-schmancy club, or one that resembles a knight. There are plenty of choices for every taste.

Sexiest female characters in MMORPGs are rarely as appealing as those found in Skyforge!

4. TERA Rising

Free-to-play TERA: Rising has all the elements of a classic fantasy MMORPG – hundreds of quests, crafting, grinding, and of course, warrior women in skimpy armor so ridiculous they’ll leave you wondering: how do they keep those tiny straps from peeling off? Glue and duct tape?

Developer Bluehole Studio went nuts designing the looks of the game’s female avatars. Its bevy of beauties range from the busty, long-legged, and statuesque, to the tiny and adorable. And yes, while the costumes for the women are not always sensible, many retain an artistic charm that makes up for the more off-putting ones.

Thankfully, TERA: Rising is more than about visuals – its real-time combat is also quite impressive! In fact, it was one of the first few MMORPGs to do away with the “click on enemy till it dies” gameplay. In TERA: Rising, you have to actively dodge strikes, and your attacks need to be timed correctly to land.

It’s among the games with the sexiest female characters, and it’s fun to play!

3. Elder Scrolls Online

You’ve wandered the frozen tundra of Skyrim and travelled the dusty wastelands of Morrowind. You’ve been a Nord, a Redguard, a Dunmer, even a hairy cat-person.

Now, you get to do all that while playing with thousands of other people online. Welcome to Elder Scrolls Online!

Elder Scrolls Online continues the venerable series’ winning formula: enormous environments, diverse cultures, frightening monsters, and of course, lots and lots of beautiful people. From the dusky Redguards to the fair Nords, there’s plenty to like. There’s even the Khajiit race for the furries out there. And for those of you who are into… weirder fetishes… there’s the reptilian Argonian race. Watch out for those spikes, though!

2. Blade & Soul

This fantasy martial arts MMORPG from South Korea has been wowing gamers all over the world with its stunning visuals. And by that we mean its exquisite CG environments.

Okay, we also mean the character models, specifically the women and their ludicrous but stimulating wardrobe choices. Unreasonably revealing costumes? Check. Skin that glistens as if they’ve just emerged from a tub of oil? Check. Thick eyelashes, and elegant hair? Check. You have to wonder: are they getting ready for a battle, or a Victoria’s Secret fashion show?

It’s a good thing Blade & Soul’s gameplay makes more sense. Its battle system is in real time, and employs a combo system that brings to mind the fighting game genre. Yes, it’s got some of the sexiest female characters in gaming, and it’s also absolutely fun!

Everyone’s heard about this one – the game with a character creation tool so amazing you can shape the MMORPG avatar of your dreams.

You know what that means. You can either create the most jaw-dropping supermodel of a character for yourself, or one with a face that’ll make you bleed tears of despair. Thankfully, most people would rather be running around as handsome hunks or beauteous babes than Deadpool sans his mask.

Of course, Black Desert Online also has an exciting, combo-fueled battle system, a spectacular open world influenced by time and weather, and challenging enemies. Even more unique is its parkour system, which allows characters to navigate the environment a la Assassin’s Creed.

As we’ve already covered in previous articles, 2016 is shaping up to be a great year for gaming. But playing games is also a costly hobby, which to be honest, kind of sucks.

Leave it to some game development studios to give us gamers cheaper, yet no less entertaining alternatives. 2016 boasts a solid line-up of new free PC games, one you can’t afford not knowing about. So, in the spirit of public service, we have compiled a list of the 11 New Free PC Games Coming Out In 2016 That Will Be Awesome.

Here they are, in no particular order:

11. Gigantic

Is it a MOBA? Is it a third-person shooter?

Genres evolve with time, and Gigantic is proof of that. While it may seem like your typical MOBA, there’s definitely more to it than just turning defensive structures into rubble and wiping the floor with hundreds of creeps.

In Gigantic, you select one of several unique heroes, then, together with a team of five, ally yourself with a powerful, building-sized guardian. Your job? To work together with your guardian, and your teammates, to destroy the opposing team and their guardian.

There are key points to capture, creatures to summon, skills to unlock with experience, and glorious team combat that culminates in a massive, earth-shaking duel between the two guardians. To top it all off, Gigantic looks super pretty, with crisp, cartoonish visuals and wonderful animation. One of the new free PC games that’s gotten us really excited for 2016!

10. Duelyst

Strategy and tactics are the building blocks that make up Duelyst, an awesome competitive game that locks two players against each other in fast, brutal combat.

Choose from six factions, including the mighty, lumbering behemoths, the Magmar, or the numerous rush-crazy Abyssian. Then, using the cards in your hands, blow the enemy to smithereens using face-melting spells, or obliterate them with powerful artifacts. Did we mention you’ve got more than 300 battle units, artifacts, and spells to customize your squad with?

Don’t let the fact that this game is turn-based fool you into thinking this is a slow game. Duelyst’s furious battles often end in less than 10 minutes. You know what that means: more opportunities for slaughter!

9. Blade & Soul

If you’re a fan of MMORPGs, you’ve probably heard of Blade & Soul.

This MMORPG from South Korea has been wowing Asian gamers with its stunning graphics and its action-packed fantasy martial arts. Its combat, which is in real time, employs a system that allows you to string together attack combos – which makes it very much like a fighting game. The game also features an incredible character customization tool, so you can make your avatar as pretty or as hideous as you wish.

Blade & Soul’s been around in Asia for while, but 2016 marks the first time people in Europe and the USA get their hands on it. Definitely one of the new free PC games we’d love to play come 2016!

8. The Elder Scrolls: Legends

The Elder Scrolls series is huge. Online card games are huge. So why not combine the two?

That is exactly what Bethesda Softworks did with The Elder Scrolls: Legends. This card game features everything you love from the franchise, from the mythical lore, to the characters and creatures, to the myriad races populating the world.

Roast your enemies with potent magic, or skewer them with your warrior’s blades! The choice is yours. Aside from multiplayer, the game also has a single-player story campaign, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to hone your skills.

7. Tree of Savior

Remember Ragnarok Online, that charming MMORPG from South Korea that took the whole world by storm in the early 2000s? Well, Tree of Savior is the spiritual successor of that game. You see, the guy behind Tree of Savior is the same guy who was responsible for bringing us Ragnarok Online. That, and Tree of Savior also features cutesy anime sprites and gorgeous visuals.

Tree of Savior boasts numerous classes. The four main archetypes are Swordsman, Wizard, Archer, and Cleric, but under each are a host of other possible classes. For example, the Archer spawns the Rangers, who specialize in fighting multiple opponents, and the Wugushi, a martial arts-type class that relies on poison. From Clerics, we get Sadhu, who can have out-of-body experiences, and Plague Doctors, who specialize in curing abnormalities.

With a huge number of classes to choose from, gorgeous graphics, and fluidly animated sprites, Tree of Savior will be a delight to all those nostalgic for Ragnarok Online. As it’s already beginning to look like one of the best new free PC games of 2016, we’re also pretty sure it’ll attract a new generation of fans.

6. Orcs Must Die! Unchained

You know those tower defense games on mobile devices? Orcs Must Die! Unchained is like those games, except wilder, messier, and way more action-packed.

Choose one of several heroes, then help defend your base from hordes of monsters. And when we say hordes, we mean armies of orcs and other bad guys so numerous it looks like the screen is being flooded by a sea of puke green. And those monsters come in all shapes and sizes, from the tiny and fast to the huge and lumbering.

Lay murderous traps and show off with legendary magic and lethal skills. What’s even better is that you can play cooperatively with friends or against each opponents. Sounds like another great eSports contender to us!

5. LawBreakers

Previously called BlueStreak, LawBreakers is a first-person shooter set in a sci-fi world.

LawBreakers features a roster of weird and cool heroes who each boast a unique set of abilities. You’ve got an assassin who can swing between buildings using a rope made of light, a mercenary who can fly, and a melee warrior with a devastating ground pound attack. As you can expect, combat is all about skillful shooting, not knee-jerk gunplay. So check your noob cred at the door.

The game also has you siding with either the Law or the Breakers, so you can expect some excellent team play. Add to this breathtaking environment design, and you’ve got one of the most promising free-to-play games in 2016.

4. Salem

Colonial America is a rarely visited topic in video games. Leave it to Salem, one of the most intriguing new free PC games of 2016, to bring us to a New World of toil, disease, and witchcraft!

Leave Europe for a fresh start in the Americas as a settler. To survive, you’ll need to gather resources, hunt animals, and explore your new environment. There are precious minerals and ores to be found underground, so get filthy and start digging! In time, you’ll build a home, a farm, and maybe even your own village. You can even coordinate with your friends and help each other prosper.

Of course, what’s colonial America without a little bit of witchcraft? Curse your enemies’ fields and watch their crops wither and die! And who knows, there might be even darker secrets to be unraveled in these uncharted lands.

To convey the brutality of the times, this open-world crafting MMO also features permadeath. So make your choices wisely, or it could be your corpse decorating the freshly tilled soil!

3. Fortnite

These days, innovation usually means combining different genres to form an exciting and cohesive whole. Fortnite is a survival game set in a sandbox world where you can build defensive structures from scavenged items.

It’s been described as “Left 4 Dead meets Minecraft,” a formula that’s a perfect fit for cooperative multiplayer. By day, you explore a procedurally generated world and build a fortress from the scraps you’ve gathered. By night, you defend yourself against waves of monsters.

Fortnite sounds pretty sweet to us, and we’re eager to play what will likely be one of the new free PC games to watch out for in 2016!

2. Riders of Icarus

Few things are cooler than riding a giant frickin’ dragon. The creators or Riders of Icarus know this, which is why they’ve filled their game with exactly that: enormous flying reptilian mounts that can barbecue entire armies with a single, fiery sneeze.

But why stop at dragons? Riders of Icarus offers other fantastical beasts to pursue, tame, and ride. There are gargantuan monsters that look like a cross between a lion and a bull, winged horses with flaming hooves, and birds with talons sharp enough to rip through armor. And of course, you can own more than one creature. It’s like Pokemon, only more badass. Gotta catch ‘em all!

This MMO is going to be huge, which is why we’re included it in our list of new free PC games to play in 2016.

1. Paragon

Like any popular video game genre, the MOBA continues to evolve. And if Paragon is any indication of the direction MOBAs are headed, we can’t be more excited for the future.

Paragon is a third-person MOBA with awesome graphics, explosive gameplay, and a rich sci-fi theme. It’s got an exciting hero roster which includes what looks like a rabbit driving a giant mech, a humanoid rhino, and even the Grim Reaper himself.

What’s even more intriguing is its cards system. You can collect cards, build your own deck, then attach them to your heroes to give them all sorts of abilities. Some of them provide a passive bonus, such as making your strikes stronger, or give you an extra skill, such as the ability to heal yourself. With a plethora of cards available, there are literally hundreds upon hundreds of ways to customize said heroes.

Honrable Mention: Hunt: Horrors of the Gilded Age

With a new age comes new horrors. In multiplayer third-person action game Hunt: Horrors of the Gilded Age, you and three other heroes must slay the undead hordes and other bloodthirsty monstrosities putting the world in peril in the 1800s. Procedurally generated maps, enemies, and items means no two encounters are ever the same, so make sure you’re ready before you go out into the night!
