RPGs really have come a long way since the days of the classic Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games.

While those titles still certainly have their merits, the genre has evolved. No longer restricted to wandering around a top-down environment and encountering random turn-based battles, games have been able to pick and choose the elements they like and implement them in new and interesting ways.

If you’re looking for a new way to experience adventure, check out these top ten RPGs of 2019!

10. Tom Clancy's The Division 2

Tom Clancy's The Division 2 is for people who like guns, and especially shooting people with those guns. It’s an online action RPG that features a near-future setting with gritty, realistic warfare and lots of disease. This upcoming title features a large world to traverse, weapons to craft and customize and even robot parts that you can attach to your cute little mutant body!

Top three things that make this game awesome:

A heavily customizable avatar whose physical features actually affect how you play.
Varied modes of transportation. You can travel on foot for a more grounded experience, or you can take a more varied approach with an air balloon, a jet ski, or even a mech.
Elemental weapons and cool mutant powers!

Character customization: It’s like choosing every detail of your very own kung fu gerbil at the pet store.

Open up and take your medicine: It’s bullets.

5. God Eater 3

God Eater 3 is a post-apocalyptic anime-style monster hunting game. Its action-oriented gameplay is fast-paced and over the top, just like any good anime should be! The game features new varieties of monsters, known in the series as Aragami, many of which look like if a night terror had a body.

Top three things that make this game awesome:

A dive dash attack that allows you to shoot forward, clearing more ground and striking enemies at the same time.
Awesome weapons with flashy moves that make for a visually engaging battle.
You can use burst moves: special, powerful abilities that can turn the tide of battle.

Coffin-snake-orb: Very relaxing.

Murder tops: Can presumably be escaped by ascending a staircase.

Outward is an open world survival RPG where you start off about as badass as your average NPC. Its combat is tough and merciless, and along with the need to eat, sleep and be wary of the environment, it really feels like you, the player, just up and decided to go on a fantasy adventure. It’s a lot more painful than it looks in the movies.

Top three things that make this game awesome:

A magic system that varies heavily depending on your class, one of which allows you to combine spell components to suit your situation!
A vast, colorful world with an excellent atmosphere that you can explore alone or with friends.
Along with a night and day cycle, Outward also offers both weather and season systems, the conditions of which affect your character’s overall wellbeing.

Beautiful landscape: That corkscrew mountain could open a reeeeeally big bottle of wine.

Nature magic: The ultimate spell, grass lightning!

3. Code Vein

Code Vein has you taking the role of an anime vampire in the apocalypse, which is just as edgy and cool as it sounds. This upcoming action RPG takes place after the near-destruction of humanity, where those who are left gain otherworldly powers by drinking blood. Travel through connected dungeons with a dystopian theme as you try to find a way to escape the living Hell of the game’s world, all the while trying not to become a brainless kill-zombie!

Top three things that make this game awesome:

A cast of characters for you to team up with, each with their own story and combat style.
Dozens of special vampire abilities that can empower you, weaken your foes, or just deal straight up damage to your target.
The ability to switch your character’s build on the fly.

The grimdark aesthetic: Everyone here looks like a bad guy.

Apocalypse fashion: Fabric is probably pretty scarce after the apocalypse, I’m sure she just didn’t have enough material to repair the holes over her boobs. What’s that, everyone’s wearing full leather armor and fancy coats? Shhhhh, don’t think about it, you’ll ruin the magic.

The Outer Worlds is an upcoming first-person RPG featuring both melee combat and gunplay, as well as a story that changes based on your choices and how you interact with the other characters in the environment. Also, it’s in spaaaaaaace! The Outer Worlds takes you to, well, an outer world, where you explore a space colony and work to uncover the true nature of the megacorporations that have taken over the future.

Top three things that make this game awesome:

Recruitable companions who fight alongside you and have their own missions and stories.
If you don’t feel like fighting, the option to avoid combat through stealth or diplomacy. Or both! We call stealthy diplomacy lying.
A “flaws” system that helps make the game a bit more interesting. The flaw you choose will give you a set debuff or disadvantage but will balance out with a different character perk. It also gives your character a little bit of personal flavor!

Seuss in space: Are… are those Truffula Trees from Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax?

Señor Neon Gums: This thing is hideous, and I love it.

1. Borderlands 3

Borderlands is back! Or it will be later this year, at least. Borderlands 3, a continuation of the popular loot-based FPS series with an RPG-style skill tree and abilities, is sure to offer a brand-spanking-new adventure with the same great style with a whole heap of new content!

Top three things that make this game awesome:

Play as one of four shiny, new vault hunters with shiny, new skills.
Explore new worlds beyond Pandora, each with their own unique ecosystems!
New combat abilities that go beyond the visceral joy of just shooting things in the face, such as crouch-sliding and wall-mounting.

4x buff: It’s like Popeye with performance enhancing spinach. That’s also magic.

Ostentatious robot death skull: This sums up the Borderlands franchise pretty well.

Have you ever wondered what a post-apocalyptic world ruled by strange mutated creatures both cuddly and ferocious would look like? Neither did I. As soon as I saw Biomutant on Steam I instantly had to know what it was all about. An apocalyptic world of furry scavengers is exactly what I found.

Once THQNordic released gameplay video of Biomutant I knew this would be a game to keep my eye on. Buckle in friends, I've seen what this game has to offer and there are a few things you need to know.

10. Your Furry Mutant Is Wildly Customizable

As soon as you enter the world of survival and beasts you get to choose what your violent little vermin will be. Customize your fur in a rainbow of colors. Choose your size and fur length, but choose wisely as some customization choices affect stats.

Thankfully they have a statistic displays while creating your character which provides you with an idea of how your choices will affect your character.

9. A Narrator Will Be Accompanying You

Interacting with the world around you will prompt commentary from a well-spoken narrator. It seems someone has taken interest enough in the hero of Biomutant to help guide them through the dangerous and confusing world they live in.

Thankfully for us, our narrator companion is easy to listen to and doesn't feel terribly intrusive to the overall experience. It actually seems to add a wonderful element to the storytelling.

8. Choices Will Affect Your Overall Story

Once you've chosen your character, the narrator begins to point you on the long journey ahead by giving you a choice. Will you walk the path of light or dark? Though it seems to be a common mechanic in games these days it does add quite a bit of depth to the overall story.

Any completionist out there will squeal with joy at the thought of having to play through multiple times to see everything the game has to offer.

7. A Customizable Arsenal Awaits

Weapons are made from various hodgepodge of parts and gadgets you scavenge. Want a katana with a baseball bat's handle as a hilt? How about a two-handed sword with a mini-chainsaw attached to the side of it? These are all possible with Biomutant's weapon crafting system.

It appears to be a system where you use individual parts with specific functions to craft the whole weapon. A crossbow that fires a volley each time you pull the trigger looks like a pretty attractive playstyle.

6. A Customizable Playstyle Awaits

With the wide variety of weapons available, your playstyle can change every time you see a crafting station. Dual wield fast pistols with a giant greatsword to turn rats into lead pincushions and dice up anything else that might stand in your way.

Maybe you want to hack away at your enemies with an ice pick in one hand and a camping ax in the other. Maybe you want to get a few good shots in with a crossbow before eviscerating it with a short sword. All this and more is possible in Biomutant.

5. Enemies are Colorful and Fun to Beat Up

It's always the little unexpected things that turn a good game into a great game. Enemies look cartoonish and gritty in a strangely pleasant way. It gives off a Spyro esc vibe. It all fits in with the whole everything is mutated but they're still just critters in a way theme.

Not only are the character designs for these enemies delightful, but the designs of the gear they wear makes it that much better. A panda hood on a rat shooting a gun at you makes for a great target. There's really only one way to describe this and it's in Michael Cane's voice: Delightful.

4. Environments are Open and Beautiful

These days games are art for many reasons. But rarely does a game make me appreciate the amount of artistic talent it takes to make a game this undeniably pleasing. Fight your way through old ruined apartment and office buildings.

Discover a forest lush with strange mutated plant life that towers over your mutant. Being able to utilize a multitude of tools to traverse these environments in an open world will certainly lead to hours of looking into the game's nooks and crannies.

3. You'll Find Vehicles to Help You Traverse and Trample

Not only is there an open world to explore, but there are also tons of mounts and gadgets to help you along the way. From steampunk mech-armor suits, to wind up hands with hidden guns. Biomutant's art style creates a whole host of interesting contraptions that fit in with the post-apocalyptic story.

Just to remind you it's still about critters, they often implement a design with some sort of animal theme. Seeing a duck themed gunner mech was not something I realized I wanted to see before I died.

2. Bosses Will Be Epic

I'm always ecstatic to see the wonderful trend of epic bosses. What do I mean by epic bosses? The ones you're hesitant to strike until you know you won't get trampled or slammed into a wall. Anything that could easily eat you in one bite would fall under the category of epic boss.

In this case that may not be terribly difficult for Biomutant's protagonist. Still, there seem to be a plethora of things that want to eat, smash, splatter, or toss you around like a plaything.

1. You'll Have Strange Mutant Abilities

Abilities like growing mushrooms that you can bounce off for greater jump height. You can also use them to toss around enemies like ping pong balls. Another wonderful classic is a Telekinesis ability that allows you to pick up objects and small enemies.

Some of my favorite times have been hurling baddies at their friends to add to the confusion of battle. Let's not forget about summoning moths that bite your enemies to distract and damage them. No matter the enemy you'll have something in your arsenal to show it that big things come in small packages.

If the Ratchet and Clank games somehow managed to have a baby with Kung Fu Panda and Bayonetta, only to be lost in Breath of the Wild’s Hyrule, it would probably look a lot like the debut game from the Swedish- based game developer Experiment 101. Biomuntant’s blend of influences is a completely original take on the action-RPG, open-world genre, which is no small feat in a post-Witcher 3/BotW gaming landscape. Also, there are mechs.

Biomutant’s massive setting is one part post-apocalypse, one part Kung Fu, and all-parts stunning. At a time when different open-world games are struggling to stand apart from one another, Biomutant’s imaginative style and fresh approach make it one of the most exciting entries in the genre in years.

If the Ratchet and Clank games somehow managed to have a baby with Kung Fu Panda and Bayonetta, only to be lost in Breath of the Wild’s Hyrule, it would probably look a lot like the debut game from Swedish based Experiment 101. The setting of Biomutant stands out with its unique far-east- inspired tinged style, centered around tribes of feral creatures who inhabit a world ravaged by a long-dormant evil. After the planet is consumed by a poisonous oil that seeps into the surface and contaminates The Tree of Life, the player character is tasked with journeying to each of its five roots to destroy both the oil and the creatures it has spawned. The six tribes who remain each have their own objectives for the tree and compete for dominion and influence over the now ruined world. The player may align themselves with whichever tribe they like, as well as influence the others through the in-game Karma system.

Biomutant Release Date

Development for Biomutant began in 2015 with the founding of Experiment 101. The studio is comprised of former members of Avalanche Studios, famous for the Just Cause series published by Square. The game and is directed by Stefan Ljungqvist. BiomutantThe game was first announced in German gaming magazine GamesMarkt in August 2017, describing itself as a "post-apocalyptic kung-fu fable". A playable form of the game made its debut that same week at the Gamescom trade show. The game is being developed for Unreal Engine 4 for Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One and is currently slated for a mid-2019 release.

The deadly inhabitants of Biomutant’s open-world prove to be quite the challenge. Learning the ins-and-outs of the intricate combat system is the name of the game if you want to survive.

Biomutant is an action role-playing game set in an open world and played from a third-person perspective. Players will take control of a creature reminiscent of a red panda or raccoon and battle a variety of mutated creatures. The player character is completely customizable with adjustable height, shape, sex, fur, clothes, and weight. Some of these adjustments also affect stats and allow for different play-styles. Larger characters will move and attack more slowly but are able to dish out and endure more damage, equip different armor, etc. The opposite goes for smaller characters.

Combat is a large focus of the game and allows for the combining of melee and long-range tactics. Different materials parts are salvageable throughout the game world and can be used to craft new equipment as well as augmented current gear. Augments include attachments which not only increase stats, but also add elemental effects like such as freezing, fire, or electrical damage. Biomutant allows for weapons to be switched on the fly mid-combat, allowing enabling for combos that not only switch between weapon types but also elemental effects. Combat flows at a breakneck pace with an emphasis on evading incoming attacks. The full list of weapon types has not yet been revealed, but from gameplay footage, we can see a number of different kinds of two-handed swords, firearms, mechanical gauntlets, and polearms that will be at the player's disposal to carry out the onslaught against the mutant hordes.

Exploration in the world can be accomplished on foot or with different player-controlled vehicles such as mechs, jet packs, and even hot air balloons. The developers stated that the game world is roughly 16 square kilometers, so you’ll need to get around anyway that you can. The game has a fully-realized weather system as well and a day-night cycle. Both elements will factor into the gameplay and will affect things from environment traversal to enemy behavior.

Progress through the main campaign is broken up by story missions which advance the plot, award experience points and loot, and allow for player interaction with the story and characters. While details are scarce, factors such as tribe alignment, a Karma system, and other player-made decisions will directly affect the trajectory of the story, allowing for the player to take part in the story and immerse themselves in the game world. Biomutant also features a dynamic narrator who comments on everything from combat and gameplay to the story elements as they take place. The narrator will slowly reduce his input as the game progresses, but the frequency of his input can also be adjusted manually in the game’s settings to suit the player’s liking.

Experiment 101 was co-founded in 2015 by Goodbye Kansas Game Invest and Stefan Ljungqvist of Avalanche Studios. As of August 2018, the team is comprised of 18 people, most of whom also came from Avalanche Studios and are best known for the Just Cause series and the recent Mad Max adaptation. In November 2017, they were acquired by THQ Nordic.

Shortly after its debut in summer of 2017, Ljungqvist announced that the game’s content had been completed and that they were diverting focus to polishing the game. N4G reported that the game feels much more polished since its debut and could become one of the biggest games of 2019. The German division of Eurogamer has said that playing Biomutant feels like playing as Rocket from Guardians of the Galaxy on steroids. There currently is no official release date, but the team has stated that they are pushing for a Q2/Q3 release date.
