[Top 15] Civilization: Beyond Earth Best Spacecraft (From Early Till Late Game)

Air spacecraft in Beyond Earth are one of the most versatile game-changing units you can get in the game, and it is important to understand their progress over time and determine which strategy towards tier affinity upgrades you would want to move forward with to have the best upper hand.

We will start from the earliest units you can buy to the most advanced units available.

10. Tacjet

How To get Tacjet: click here

This drone-driven jet has a low range and, like all other jets, can only attack from a base. With their lower base range at which they can attack, they don't come in as useful during the early game because you probably won't have an enemy base nearby. Maybe an alien nest, in which case you could farm the nest for science if you have the related virtues to do so (See might virtues).

These units, later on, are incredibly useful in changing the tide of battle. They are a great defense unit during this early period, but are not often used for offense, except maybe taking out aliens.

9. Needlejet

How get Needlejet: click here

Next is the Needlejet, which has some slight improvements and only slightly improved range compared to the Tacjet. They can easily take down ranged units and still have some trouble with some melee units, but at 22 strength they can hold their ground for the most part. They return back to their base and can heal after an attack without the risk of being destroyed if you have 3 or more jets.

What makes Needlejet great:

Damage units from safety of base
Cheaper than advanced units
Longest range unit for tier 2

7. Locust

How to get Locust: click here

The Locust has less fighting strength than purity by slightly but makes up with improved range, which is a unique feature of harmony jets. Their range moves up to 11 if they have full HP, but it might be wiser to use the other perk choice of +30% strength against air units if you are prepared for air battle with your other enemies. But if your strategy is to attack early on, extra range can be a great offensive perk.

6. Herald

How to get Herald: click here

The Herald, which has similar strength to the Locust, can get a 20% strength perk that is not just for attacking air units, and a unique other option is that the Herald can get a 50% attack advantage when air sweeping. This will wipe out any intercepting jets if you want to be extra cautious. One thing you'll notice about supremacy if you go that route is that you will have the most powerful air units when it comes to air-to-air combat and could easily destroy any spacecraft to take over the sky.

Perks option: 20% damage to all damaged units
Anti aircraft strengths

5. Raider

How to get Raider: click here

The Raider is the strongest of all 3 tier jets, with 38 strength and the ability to get a 25% strength bonus against land and sea units. It is the obvious choice if you are planning an offensive route and want to focus on air units to destroy ground targets.

Highest strength in tier 3
Best attack bonuses in tier 3
Offense build

4. Shrike

How to get shrike: click here

Shrike has the most unique perks. It has the ability to use splash damage or scatter enemies 30% of the time. Splash damage, however, is unblockable and not reduced by strength, so an additional 15 damage done to every nearby unit next to where you attack can add up to a lot of damage over time. It is a unique strategy, however, and doesn't always come in useful in every situation.

3. Predator

Next is the Predator, which again has the clear strength advantage versus the other 2 units. It has the perk option of always gaining health which is really amazing when it comes to attacking, so that you can maintain an offense consistently. Or you can choose the perk option towards attacking cities for 50%, but I personally would advise the March perk as it will give you the ability to continuously attack over and over. and not worry as much about your unit's health.

Highest Strength
Self healing every turn
Best attack bonuses against sea and land units

2. Seraph

How to get Seraph: click here

The Seraph has less range strength than the predator, but an extra interception attack perk can change the game. This allows you to have one seraph ambush two attacking air units during your enemies' turn. This can greatly destroy your enemies' air superiority, and before you know it, you will be the only one with air units on the battlefield.

Best Air to Air combat jet
2 interceptions
Have a complimentary battleship that can carry one jet

1. Rocktopus

The number one air unit for Beyond Earth is unique in some ways. It could be considered not an air unit, but I'd say as it is able to go into outer space and become a satellite, in some ways it is. This unique unit is in harmony class, and this unit has the highest ranged strength out of any non-ultimate unit. Its range is unlimited, but being in outer space, it is limited in who can attack it. Plus, as it lays the land with miasma, you'll be hopping for joy if you're a harmony builder.

Now add the perk of it being able to deorbit at any time for mobility; otherwise you have to wait 10 turns until it is finished with being in outer space. Its range when in orbit is 2 which could cover a whole bridge or land mass. They are amazing for defense because they are only targetable by anti-orbital strike units and they can lay waste to any land unit rather instantly.

Because they're in outer space, I put them as number one as no other air unit can even get to outer space other than the rocktopus. That's it for my tier list, folks. Have fun out there, and remember, as Buzz Lightyear once said, it's not flying, it's just falling with style.

[Top 10] Civilization: Beyond Earth Best Affinity

Affinity is commonly the most overlooked advancement tree initially in Beyond Earth that newcomers forget to pay attention to. Too often, the first thing most players are thinking about is what they are going to research, but they don't see how certain research techniques give them affinity.

Affinity is your sponsor and nation's political, societal, and technological directives, and it is how they relate to other nations as well. I am going to show you the strengths that each of these affinities has. It is hard to say which of these affinities is the best because they are all well balanced.

However, depending on your sponsor, there may be an affinity that's more advantageous and has symmetry with other powers to give you an advantage. Let's go over the affinities 1 by 1 and determine which affinity is meant for you.

Harmony

Harmony is a directive towards harmonizing with the alien planet and changing humanity to adapt to it. It has units that specialize in the hybridization of human and alien combat. They heal in miasma and even anywhere faster and also have the ability to "leash" aliens and turn them into units under your explorers.

You still have technologies you need to research before you can get there, though, and there are perks they don't have. I think if you're going to focus on a harmony build, the African sponsor does great as there are buildings for food growth along the way for harmony. I definitely love the feeling of taming the alien atmosphere and getting all in love with the collective consciousness, but I leave it to you to decide if you need a Mind Flower to do it or not!

The end game for Harmony is definitely the easiest as it's a straightforward defense for a position for x amount of turns.
Their strategic resource, Biomass, Gives your city extra food and eventually science at lvl 12 which is wayyy down the line.
The best wonders along their affinity tree are just the Drone sphere, Gene Vault, and Nanothermite.
They have along their affinity tree buildings that improve culture and health primarily.
Awesome self healing units that get more healing in miasma!

Choose Harmony if…
You want faster growing culture and cities due to the buildings and strategic resource related to them
You want to use Miasma in your battle strategy which is amazing for defense giving your enemies constant damage and your units strength boosts and healing boosts
You want to amass a large alien army and leash potentially colossal aliens such as the worm and the kraken. Great for early game builds!
If you want to focus early on building explorers and finding artifacts instead of killing aliens.

PurityPurity is the directive to maintain the course of the mission and bring settlers from planet Earth to the new planet that has been terraformed and prepared for them.

They have some of the straightforward combat bonuses that don't require particular conditions and have great ranged units that can hover! Including their most powerful unit!
On the tech tree most of the military units can be found where you earn purity points.
Their 1st unique infantry unit cost just titanium which makes it easy to pop a few of them battlesuits out no problem!
easier accessible technologies to progress in the respective affinity.
Best wonders along the affinity tree are Markov Eclipse and The Crawler
Floatstone generates extra energy for your cities

Choose Purity if…

You want to focus on building your military and be offensive. They have great siege units! Plus getting most of the basic military units is on their affinity path!
You want a challenge for their victory is the most challenging with having to bring settlers out from earth to settle cities
You want to destroy aliens early in the game! You’ll have combat bonuses early on to destroy them.
You like Terrascapes and domes for these tile improvements come with extra perks

Supremacy

Supremacy is the directive to improve humanity through the breakthroughs in technology discovered on this journey. You are the soldiers of that new command whose plan is to bring the new future back to planet Earth. It's hard to tell how machine or human they are, but it must be working for them.

They have a unique advantage of having orbital range wherever there is firaxite which makes the strategy of teleporting your army into the middle of their base pretty logistically possible.
Vertical farming, an incredible tech, is along one of there branches
Titanium is along there affinity path and gives your cities an amazing production boost
Firaxite gives a science boost to your cities
Master Control, Guo Pu Yaolan, Precog Projects, and the Faraday Gyre are great wonders along there path

Choose Supremacy if…

You want to find artifacts early on and improve your production and science output quickly
You want Battleships that act as carriers one of my favorite units for Supremacy for it gives your fleet easy air offense/defense
You want a mixture of offense and defense for Supremacy has amazing ranged siege units which can protect just as easily as they destroy from afar.
You like node improvements that heal nearby fighting units because they will give you extra energy.

Global conflict is something we all dread. But when it comes to games, there’s little that’s as exciting as war that envelops entire worlds in violence.

We previously made a list of the military strategy games that explored the nitty-gritty of what it means to be a general on the battlefield, commanding companies of troops against smaller forces. This new list, however, focuses on war on a grander scale – on battles that involve entire nations or even worlds.

Like the aforementioned article on military games, this one will also move away from the real-time strategy genre. And so let’s begin this list of the 10 Best Strategy War Games To Play in 2015 with entry # 10…

10. Tropico 5

This beautiful coastal city is yours to develop or ruin

In Tropico 5, you are El Presidente. Tasked with governing the island nation of Tropico, you must guide its progress, as well as its people, through the evolving times. There are historical events to survive – and to exploit – such as World War II and the Cold War. And you must do all this while fending off rival factions and governments.

Who ever said being supreme leader was easy? Thankfully, the new dynasty feature means you can expand your family, with each of your brood possessing skills that will help your efforts. One of them can even become president!

Wait a minute... is that Minas Tirith??

Here’s a turn-based strategy war game set in a fantasy world.

You choose from six races: humans, high elves, dwarves, draconians, goblins, and orcs. You then select a leader, who evolves as the game progresses, RPG-style. After that, it’s all about the exploration of the world map; expansion through conquest or diplomacy; exploitation of resources, opportunities, and the abilities of your forces; and extermination of rival powers.

Not to mention you’ll soon find yourself dealing with aliens, from entire empires and smaller alien colonies to pirates, traders, and even monsters. Yes, space monsters.

You’ll be in charge of guiding your civilization to the stars and beyond – by researching technologies such as the warp drive, managing your economy, engaging in politics and diplomacy, and, of course, going to war. The gameplay occurs in real-time, but can be paused, giving you much-needed time to think your strategies through.

Its mind-boggling sense of scale, coupled with its intriguing 4X-based gameplay, makes Distant Worlds: Universe one of the best strategy war games available today.

7. Total War: Attila

Can't hind behind those walls forever

Set in 395 AD, Total War: Attila traces the rise to power of one of history’s most fearsome figures: Attila of the Huns.

As the latest Total War game, Attila boasts improvements to the series’ A.I., graphics, storytelling, and sound design, and even brings back a feature first introduced in Rome: Total War: the Horde faction.

The Huns and several other factions begin the game as Hordes. Because Hordes are nomadic, they don't start with a capital or province. This gives them enhanced mobility, and a variety of other perks. For instance, they don’t have to worry about sanitation. They also gain a majority of their profits from sacking and pillaging settlements, and from tributes from certain states. This forces them to keep moving from region to region, to find new settlements to raid. Playing a Horde faction is a drastically different experience from the usual stationary faction, making Attila an excellent change of pace from earlier titles.

True to the violent era in which the game is set, Attila is steeped in an apocalyptic miasma, complete with inclement weather and gloomy lighting – making it one of the best strategy war games you can play in 2015.

6. Sid Meier’s Civilization: Beyond Earth

A beautiful, green planet. I hope mankind doesn't ruin it

The esteemed Civilization series goes interstellar with Beyond Earth, a turn-based strategy game set on an alien planet.

600 years from now, humanity has messed up Earth, so we send the brave and the bold on a mission to find new worlds to inhabit. We do find one, but as soon as we land on it do we begin to bicker amongst each other again. Some things never change.

You oversee the growth of one of several factions, which are hypothetical alliances such as the Pan-Asian Cooperative, the American Reclamation Corporation, and the People’s African Union. Maneuvering your units over a map composed of hexagonal tiles, you then explore your new world, expand your territory, and deal with rival factions. Similar to previous Civilization titles, you’ve also got technology to research and upgrade, cities to build, and a host of other things to do.

Beyond Earth’s unique contribution to the series is the Affinity system. These are philosophies you can develop, which then affect your technological advancement and even unlock special units. For example, Supremacy prioritizes technology above all, rewarding you with specialized units you can use on the battlefield, while Harmony is all about co-existing with your new home, allowing you to domesticate indigenous life forms.

Thanks to its enthralling setting and new gameplay systems, Beyond Earth is one of the best strategy war games today.

5. Endless Legend

Our giant is bigger than yours!

We return to high fantasy with Endless Legend, another 4X turn-based strategy game.

As the overseer of one of eight factions, it’s your job to change the fate of your dying world, Auriga.

The factions include the ghostly knights, the Broken Lords; the plague-spreading, insectoid Necrophages; and the wise race of ancient dragons, the Drakken.

The map is split into hexagonal tiles, over which you move your armies. But it’s not all about warfare; you’ll also have to micromanage your cities, as well as prepare for Seasons, which drastically alter the climate and, consequently, the abilities of your units.

One of the most stylish, well-executed strategy war games on this list!

4. Europa Universalis IV

We've got some conquering to do!

Europa Universalis IV is a grand strategy game that embroils the entire globe in conflict.

The timeline starts on November 11, 1444 and ends on January 2, 1821. You can select to play as the sovereign of any country that existed within this period, then attempt to take over the world – while dealing with historical events including the Discovery of the New World, the French Revolution, and the Protestant Reformation.

The entirety of our planet, divided into provinces, is represented in the game. Conquering all will require a balance of economy, diplomacy, and military. Of course, you can achieve victory via any route – if you wish, you can win chiefly through warfare. Just remember that a country without allies will end up the target of all.

Religion also plays a role in the game. For example, conversions allow you to convert provinces. Catholicism gives you control of the Pope, whose influence can gift you a variety of rewards. On the other side of the coin, there’s technology, which can be upgraded to give you more powerful military units.

A great game to play if you’re one for world domination!

3. Crusader Kings II

It's a geography lesson, only with more blood and backstabbing

This grand strategy game focuses on the historical bloodbath that is the Middle Ages.

In Crusader Kings II, you’re charged with leading a dynasty to supremacy from 1066 to 1454. Achieving victory involves acquiring the most prestige points within the time limit, an effort that entails war, assassinations, political marriages, alliances, sound economy and population management, city-building, and more.

Because dynasty plays such a key role in the game, you’ll be able to sire children. Offspring inherit the skills, religion, and culture of their parents. With this in mind, players can arrange marriages in such a way that couples produce offspring boasting enhanced attributes – thereby improving your chances of winning the game.

Of course there are other systems at play which can drastically influence the flow of your game, including tax laws, gender laws, religion, intrigue, and others. It’s incredibly complex, and one of the most satisfying strategy war games in existence.

2. Total War: Shogun 2

Blood and steel

Set during the bloody Ashikaga Shogunate, Total War: Shogun 2 has you assuming the role of the general and leader of one of nine clans.

Each clan has a specialty, such as the Chosokabe clan’s exceptional bowmen, the Mori clan’s superior navy, and the Uesugi’s dedication to Buddhism, which enables them to recruit the game’s best warrior monks.

As exhilarating as watching hordes of samurai cut each other down like they’re made of butter, war is not always waged on the battlefield. Special agents, such as geishas and ninjas to act as spies and assassins, are just as useful at getting the job done.

Like all Total War games, the campaign mode lets players maneuver their armies across the map, and manage the economy and other empire-building activities. So far, the formula has worked, and in Shogun 2, it’s at its best.

1. Sid Meier’s Civilization V

Just... one more... turn!!!

The Civilization series from the renowned Sid Meier reaches the zenith of quality with Civilization V.

Like most titles on this list, Civilization V focuses on exploration, expansion, exploitation, and extermination. You select one of the many races culled from throughout history, from Rome to America, and get to meet historical luminaries including Gandhi, Queen Elizabeth, and Alexander the Great.

Starting with a single settlement in the dawn of time, you expand your territory by conquering neighboring cities or founding new ones. And as the centuries progress, you’ll find that there are many alliances to be made, technologies to research, cultural marvels to build, and, of course, wars to be waged.

Aside from world domination via military conquest, you can win the game by being the first to send a vessel to space, acquiring other civilizations’ support in the United Nations, or completing a special project called Utopia.

It’s epic, beautiful, mentally challenging, and takes the “just-one-more-turn” addiction to new heights. Civilization V exemplifies the best that strategy war games can offer, winning itself spot # 1 on this list.
