The turn-based RPG is a spwarling genre that attracts creative minds from around the world. With so many fantastic titles, it's hard to pick just 25, but here they are.

25. Fallout (1997)

Fallout, the title that started one of gaming’s biggest franchises. Set in the post-apocalypse, the player is tasked with setting out from the safety of their underground vault to explore the wastelands for a water chip. This initial task soon leads the player to discover a whole new world, full of monsters, politics and opportunities.

Most gamers jumped straight to Fallout 3 or Fallout: New Vegas, both being excellent within their own right, however, if you want a turn-based RPG that will give you a Souls-like experience, before Dark Souls was a thing, then I highly recommend this game. It has not aged as gracefully as some of the other older titles on this list, never-the-less, if you’re willing to tackle the learning curve, this is a classic game you simply must experience.

Wartales is the only title on this list that is still in Early Access on Steam, however even its current state is better than some “fully finished” AAA titles. Shiro Games presents an open world RPG, that gives the player a chance to create their own adventure and forge their own path with their own party.

The way Wartales uses the 3D environment in combat is refreshing, and lends itself to tactical consideration, and not just what weapons/abilities your party has. If you are looking for a strategically engaging turn-based RPG, look no further than Wartales.

I am Setsuna is a classic looking top-down, turn-based RPG developed by Tokyo RPG Factory, and should be in the collection of any JRPG fan. Published by Square Enix, I am Setsuna has an interesting start, playing as the potential assassin of the titular Setsuna, you are convinced to join her on her quest, rather than kill her.

The immediate twist of turning from assassin to protector sets the tone for the rest of I am Setsuna’s story. This is complimented by the retro-inspired combat, which reminds us why we all love the genre.

Forever Home is a retro RPG, with a deep story that does not take itself too seriously. There are collectables, item crafting, and everything else you’d expect from a SNES era JRPG, which is made all the more impressive when you learn that Forever Home is developed by indie studio Pixel Blade Games.

Forever Home feels like the culmination of every great RPG from the SNES, and is a very good entry point to that type of game if you have never played a classic JRPG and feel intimidated by some of the dated elements. Pixel Blade Games have made a highly polished and classic feeling version that is more accessible to a modern audience.

Despite having the option (and I think you should always take this option) of fighting the battles in a real time tactics style, the rest of the game is turn-based strategy. How you decide to expand and level up your faction’s Lords dictating the rest of your campaign. In truth all Total War games offer this type of role-playing, however Warhammer 2 perfects this element, and currently does so better than Warhammer 3.

Earthlock, developed by Snowcastle Games, is not a fresh look at the turn-based RPG mechanically, but has an introspective premise. What if the earth stopped spinning? How would people have to live? Earthlock’s combat mechanics are an interesting “back to basics” type of party system, with two combatants with distinct roles. The focus is on finding the combination of characters and buffs that work for you. This one is a must have for RPG lovers and those who enjoy engaging turn-based combat.

Sword & Souls: Neverseen is a cartoony RPG adventure game with turn-based combat, developed by SoulGame Studio. This game forgoes a traditional plot for a player-led narrative, having interactions with quests and characters being the basis for the story. You land your ship on a land never seen before, and must embark on questing from there.

The core combat loop is an engaging turn-based affair with skills acquired by the player buffing your attacks. There is an interesting series of mini games, that give you a new skill or ability in combat. This attaches the mini games to the core of the gameplay, and makes learning new skills an engaging process. I highly recommend this game.

15. Divinity: Original Sin 2 (2017)

Divinity: Original Sin 2 is an adventure RPG. With a new cast and century of time since the first game, Original Sin 2 is enjoyable without knowledge of the previous title. Set in the fantasy world of Rivellon, the player is the “Godwoken”. A sorcerer (called sourcerers in this game) saved from certain death by a divine force, and tasked with taking on the monsters and the oppressive organization that seeks to subjugate sourcerers.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 has a number of pre-set backstories as well as the option to create an entirely custom character, so the emphasis is on the role-playing. You can play this one online with party of three friends, so definitely give this one a go.

14. Disgaea 5 (2015)

Disgaea 5 is what people who hate JRPGs fear JRPGs look like, but do not let that deceive you. Underneath the almost unbearably twee anime-ness there is a solid story and combat, and could be the game to turn any cynical “games should be realistic” type into a giggling schoolchild in no time.

Disgaea 5 has a distinctly tactical approach, and has polished combat mechanics that comes from making four games previously. Nippon Ichi Software got me when I did not expect to be gotten, and perhaps it can do the same for you.

13. Battle Chasers: Nightwar (2017)

Battle Chasers: Nightwar is traditional turn-based RPG, developed by Airship Syndicate (this is their second appearance on this list) and demonstrates why this is their preferred genre. After your party’s airship is shot down, you and yours must fight your way out of this mysterious place.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar has an engaging cast of characters and plenty of role-playing moments on top of a top-notch combat system. This should be in the collection of any turn-based RPG lover.

12. South Park: The Stick of Truth (2014)

South Park: The Stick of Truth is a comedic take on the turn-based RPG, developed by Obsidian Entertainment and involving South Park’s creators, Matt Stone and Trey Parker. The Stick of Truth marks the first time Stone and Parker were directly involved in the creation of a South Park game (AND IT SHOWS!)

Every single element of The Stick of Truth is a joke, from the combat mechanics to the main character’s interactions with the South Park kids to how the story unfolds. All of it either parodies the conventions of traditional turn-based RPG mechanics or the story tropes, and it is hilarious! This game works for lovers of turn-based RPGs, lovers of South Park and lovers of a good time. South Park: The Stick of Truth is a comedy game that never shies away from being a turn-based RPG. The idea of a parody game is risky, as either the comedy or the gameplay is subpar. South Park: The Stick of Truth does both with gusto.

11. Warhammer 40K: Mechanicus (2018)

Warhammer 40K: Mechanicus sets the player in the shoes of a member of the Adeptus Mechanicus, a faction in the sprawling Warhammer 40K universe. The Adeptus Mechanicus believe that machines have souls, and combining yourself with machinery is part of their religion. In practice this means you get super cool augmentations to upgrade your character!

The Warhammer universe has several games made about them, each exploring the unique stories this universe has to offer, and Warhammer 40K: Mechanicus looks to be no different. The deep characters and literal libraries full of lore, this is one for the 40K fans.

10. Final Fantasy VII Remake (2020)

Final Fantasy VII Remake is a reimagining of 1997’s classic, set in the dystopian city of Midgar, players inhabit the familiar role of Could Strife and his party. Square Enix is on a Final Fantasy remake binge as of late, and this remake captures so much of what made the original fun.

For those who loved the original, Square Enix has created a fresh version of this beloved title, and if you have never played a Final Fantasy game this could be a great place to start. Do yourself a favor and play this thing!

9. Persona 5 (2016)

Persona as a series has always presented a window into other types of JRPGs that I as a combat orientated gamer tends to miss out on. That being the life sim side of the game, which is a role-playing game, but not one I often play. I was an awkward teenager; I had no need to role-play as one. The alternate dimension demon hunting, however, got my attention.

Persona 5 is the Persona formula mixed to perfection. The combat and story are engaging, and the life sim element kept me entertained. If only high school was that fun.

8. Wasteland 3 (2020)

Wasteland 3 is a turn-based RPG, and the third adventure across post-apocalyptic America, and this time you’re in Colorado. Controlling the remaining two members of Arizona Ranger Team November, your job is to survive the isometric world and see what else of your team exists.

Wasteland 3 has a co-op option for its campaign and the survival nature lends itself to this, as you and your friend try and complete your new missions. InXile Entertainment made a truly fun and challenging game.

7. XCOM 2 (2016)

XCOM 2 is the sequel to Feral Interactive’s reboot to the classic XCOM series, advancing the story a few decades and putting the player on more of a back foot than before (this time the aliens have already won). It is now your job to rage a guerrilla war and attempt to liberate earth from its oppressors.

XCOM 2 is turn-based isometric combat at its finest. The general loop of combat, looting and researching compliment and feed into one another nicely. Each campaign is unique except for how much of a struggle it is. Highly recommend for any strategy nerd.

6. Valkyria Chronicles 4 (2018)

Valkyria Chronicles 4 continues the fictionalised retelling of WW2, where our heroes fight the Empire of the Rising Sun to defend their homeland from invasion and oppression. The art style creates idyllic looking battlefields, giving the player a sense of something worth fighting for.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 expands upon the established tactical combat system, adding a new class for a more dynamic arena. With a message of hope and overcoming a greater force, this game is well worth your time and money.

5. Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden (2018)

Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden is a turn-based RPG based on the TTRPG, Mutant Year Zero. Developed by The Bearded Ladies, Mutant Year Zero has you control a small party of mutants as they journey across the wasteland. This quest will test you and your party.

Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden has an XCOM styled combat system merged with a truly stellar stealth system that combine to create an edge-of-your-seat tactical experience you will not soon forget.

4. Chrono Trigger (1995)

Chrono Trigger is a 1995 game for the SNES. No, I am not lazy, they just rereleased it for PC. If you have not heard of this game by now I can either assume you’re new to gaming (in which case, welcome! You have so much to enjoy!) or you’re lying.

Chrono Trigger is the blueprint for classic styled JRPGs, and is the quintessential retro gaming and turn-based combat experience. Go play/replay it. Like, right now.

3. Expeditions: Rome (2022)

Expeditions: Rome is the latest instalment of Logic Art’s Expeditions franchise, releasing in 2022. This time you are at the helm of the Roman Empire, going to battle with your own Pretorian Guard. Much like with Viking the focus is on customizing your units and using their strengths tactically.

I wanted to restrict myself when writing this article to one title per franchise. That is why Fallout 2 or XCOM: Enemy Unknown are not on this list, but after picking this one up on a sale not so long ago I couldn’t help myself. It follows much of the template of Expeditions: Viking, but like Viking, Rome improves on the mechanics and party systems, allowing for a truly dynamic Pretorian guard. Fans of Roman history or good combat mechanics will find hours of fun in this one.

2. Disco Elysium (2019)

Disco Elysium is more than a game. It is a TTRPG with your best friend that happens to be in the form of a video game. Developed by ZA/UM, Disco Elysium sets itself apart immediately by demonstrating a deeper level of choice and role play from the very first activity you will need to do. This game flips the amnesia riddled protagonist on its head, having that not only become a character trait of sorts, but be a consequence of his drinking.

The less I say about Disco Elysium the less I spoil, and more you’ll get to enjoy if you have not already. This is the most fun you can have legally, anywhere.

1. Darkest Dungeon (2016)

Darkest Dungeon is a party management RPG, where the turn-based combat is the least of your worries. Your job is to gather a party of adventurers, ensure they are properly equipped and send them off to a dungeon to get loot, which is where the classic turn-based combat comes in. Your choices will affect these encounters, and these encounters will affect your adventurers.

The interesting part is when your party returns and you have to help them with any PTSD or new found interests they picked up on the journey. At the core Darkest Dungeon is an HR simulator with a dungeon crawler attached. I cannot recommend this game enough.

10. The Witcher 3

Set in what is known simply as The Continent, you’ll assume the role of protagonist Geralt of Rivia; a monster hunter more commonly known as a Witcher. You and Geralt will travel through dark and twisted forests, war torn lands, and monster infested areas in search of your missing adopted daughter, Ciri. Your goal and main quest is to save Ciri from an otherworldly force known as The Wild Hunt, as they attempt to capture her and exploit her magical abilites.

Managing a weapon system that utilizes Steel Swords and Silver Swords (the latter used solely for monster slaying), you’ll journey through a wicked and brutal landscape on your way to find Ciri. Collecting bounties to hunt monsters for experience, money, and gear, and completing hundreds of unique and well written side quests will occupy much of your time outside of the main quest line.

Perhaps the most interesting feature of The Witcher 3 however, is Gwent. Gwent is a full-blown collectable card game, which you can play as you journey through The Continent. Stumbling in from a long day of traveling the road, find the nearest inn and take out the Gwent deck and battle some tavern locals while sampling the local ales. 9. Skyrim

In this fifth installment of the Elder Scrolls series, Skyrim is an open world RPG set in the harsh northern province of Skyrim. In this cold and dark RPG, you’ll assume the role of a hero (or anti-hero for that matter) and set off on an epic adventure to defeat Alduin the World Eater. He’s as much of a jerk as his name implies, and your journey to face him will be one of trials and tribulations.

Running through the province of Skyrim, you’ll experience the open world RPG experience as it was meant to be lived. Out of the gate, you’re presented with a vast open area and not much direction as to which way to proceed. Our advice is to just start walking and figure it out. Skyrim will play best with an open mind for adventure and great attention to detail. There’s a lot of it to pick up on out there.

Throughout the game, you’ll run into the occasional dragon (which have only since returned to the land right as you were about to be executed). Defeating these dragons will allow you to absorb their soul, and dragon souls can be used to learn special and unique Shouts. These Shouts are an ancient practice you will learn, and your character will be the first in generations who can wield this power. Use the gift wisely.

8. Shadow of Mordor

Ever want to jump into the Tolkien mythos in between main titles? Here’s your chance kids! Shadow of Mordor plunges you into Middle Earth, right in between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings. An open world RPG, Shadow of Mordor will set you off on an action RPG adventure, with extremely well-done cinematics to help set the Middle Earth tone.

Assuming the role of the ranger Talion, you’re on a mission of vengeance and redemption. Seeking to avenge the death of your loved ones (it gets more specific as the story progresses, you’ll set out upon Middle Earth with the ability to hack and slash your way through Uruk hordes or wield wraith powers and manipulate your enemies as well.

Easily the most unique and exciting aspect of Shadow of Mordor is the Nemesis system. The game will track the progress of any Uruk who performs a notable feat. These can be killing your character, surviving a battle with your hero, or several other smaller feats. These baddies will be promoted throughout the game and come back as tougher Captains who will drop powerful Runes once encountered a second time (and defeated).

7. Fallout 4

Set in the wastelands of the Greater Boston Metropolitan Area, Fallout 4 is the fifth major installment from Bethesda in this classic franchise. After surviving nuclear fallout, you assume the role of a vault dweller; someone who retreated to the underground vaults run by Vault Tec to stave off nuclear destruction.

Roaming the wastelands, you’re going to have a field day if weapons are your thing here. From baseball bats to fission rifles, Fallout 4 has it all. There is even a weapon where you can just load your junk as ammo and fire away. If you have “kill a mutant with a toy block” on your bucket list, Fallout 4 may be your only way to accomplish that goal. Besides the whole weapons thing, you’ll meet over half a dozen unique followers who have their own fleshed out back stories and quest lines (including a Dog which you can adopt and have follow you around).

While it boasts many unique and astounding features, Fallout 4 will impress fans of the RPG genre the most with its character dialogue scenes. Choosing dialogue options won’t simply progress the encounter along; you’ll see a studio quality cut scene with your character and the NPC involved having a discussion. This is only further enhanced by the detail in which you can customize the appearance of your characters.

6. Fallout: New Vegas

Sticking with our post nuclear apocalypse theme here, we stumble from Beantown and find ourselves in Las Vegas; or New Vegas as it has become in this new post nuclear world. In this smaller installment, you’ll assume the role of The Courier; a wasteland traveler who is shot in the head and left for dead while carrying a package to be delivered. Our mission, as you may have guessed, is to find the poor soul who tried to kill us and return the favor.

Following the ethos of the Fallout universe, our main gameplay feature here is going to the weaponry. New Vegas does follow a theme consistent with the west, and you’ll notice the influence in some of the outfit choices as well as the weaponry. VATS play a bigger role in this installment than it has in the past, and character customization to take advantage of this unique targeting system is at its strongest in this installment.

Of all the Fallout titles, this is the one that takes the cake when it comes to story. It is the unique aspect and unique advantage in this title. The NPC’s are well done from top to bottom, the dialogue is well written, and cut scenes within dialogue will have you forgetting you’re playing a video game all together. Plus, our dwelling options in this game are quite interesting as well.

5. Kingdome Come: Deliverance

Breaking the mold of the hero with powers, or the chosen one who wields the magical weapon, Kingdom Come: Deliverance sets us on a different path as we journey out into the world. You’ll play the role of Henry, an illiterate blacksmith’s son. Your goal in the beginning of the game is just as mundane as well. Basically, you start needing to make sure you can consistently find food, water, and shelter.

Once our basic necessities are taken care of, Kingdom Come: Deliverance delivers on a supremely realistic view of 15^th century Bohemia, a part of the Holy Roman Empire. While the combat system is highly developed, and skill based, it is by no means a central basis of the game. In fact, you can spend your focus and energy on building Henry into an evasive smooth talker who rarely engages in combat. Still, there are plenty of swords and sword fights waiting for you if you so desire.

Incredibly unique to Kingdome Come: Deliverance is the lore and depth of history. There is a vast and deep journal for the game, and every aspect has been consulted during development by historians of the era. From objects, to dialogue, to interactions between social sects, Kingdom Come: Deliverance will catapult you into a different time and age, while still allowing you to swing your sword and slash away if you so choose.

4. Vampyr

Vampyr game puts you in the role of a World War I-era surgeon named Jonathan Reid, who is back home in London after serving in France. You’ll soon discover that he has become a vampire. He stumbles upon this revelation a quite tragic fashion: his thirst for blood causes him to attack the first person he sees — his sister, come to welcome him home from the war.

Gameplay is unique, and invigoration. Combat is essentially completely optional, with only a handful of boss fights that are mandatory. Reid has the option to avoid almost every physical confrontation. However, every NPC is the game is targetable however, and Reid also has the option to feed on them and turn them into Vampires as well. With story driven consequences.

The cinematics are world class in Vampyr, perhaps the best of any game on the list. What’s more impressive is the Mesmerize aspect added to the game. When turning someone into a Vampire, Reid will receive their final thought, and these thoughts become pieces of lore that help tie the story together and add a healthy amount of story to this already impressive story driven RPG.

3. Mount and Blade 2: Bannerlord

Open world is the name of the game in the Mount and Blade series, and Bannerlord delivers. In this title, your options are essentially endless regarding how you play through. You can suit up as a mercenary in an army, a knight, a merchant, a successful gladiator; the list goes on. You’ll also be able to raise your own castles and armies or take the path of a craftsman and forge weapons and armor.

The combat in Mount and Blade 2: Bannerlord is slated to be unique, but as realistic as it gets for a medieval open world RPG. The first title in the series to adopt a true physics-based system, your choice of weapon will matter more than in previous installments. Weapon size, weight, and mass will all be determining factors in its swing speed and damage.

While still pending an official release date, we know already that players can come to expect a strong modernization of the well-known, yet niche, open world RPG series. It’s safe to say that rather than the traditional role of taking command of a character who is out on a specific quest, Mount and Blade 2: Bannerlord will offer a more sandbox friendly approach to the RPG genre.

2. Elite Dangerous

Set upon a fully scientifically mapped version of our very own Milky Way Galaxy, Elite Dangerous is grand in scale to say the least. In fact, you can even fly your starship to our own Solar System. It just may take you a little while depending on where you are. In case you didn’t know, our Galaxy is quite large friends.

Playing as an MMORPG, Elite Dangerous falls into the Open World RPG category quite nicely for several reasons. First, it is not sword and shield combat based like a clear majority of the genre. Players can become a space trader for example, and never fire a space cannon in their entire careers. You’ll start with a small spaceship and some meager funds, and it’s your job to make a name for yourself in the galaxy. Through any means necessary.

By far, without question, the coolest aspect of this game is its unique time keeping standards. The game was released in 2014 and took place in the year 3300. Since release, the game has kept with Coordinated Universe Time (UTC) and progresses in real time. Meaning, the year in game now is 3304. I don’t know if it’s just me, but details in games like that give me a warm and fuzzy feeling inside.

1. Conan Exiles

Touting itself as an “open world survival game”, Conan Exiles starts players out as they are being crucified in the hot desert sun, for a litany of crimes apparently committed. Coming to our aid however, is none other than Conan himself. Now it is our job to survive the harsh lands known simply as The Exiled Lands.

Character creation and customization are well done and offer tons of variety. Once you’re free from the crucifixion however, looks alone are not going to do the trick. A variety of standard medieval weaponry is at your disposal to destroy anyone who stands in between you and desert survival (and ultimately escape).

Religion and faith play a large role in the game as well, with your character able to swear allegiance to one of four major pantheon Gods. Religions can be learned and studied from various NPC’s throughout the game and will provide a unique role in determining situational outcomes for your character.

Is World of Warcraft Still The King of MMOrpgs?

World of Warcraft has been around for over a decade, but does it still have the strength to remain the king of MMOrpgs?

When it comes to MMORPGs, and games that have had a huge impact on the industry; you cannot ignore World of Warcraft. For over a decade WoW has been an innovation and front-runner in the way MMORPGs are played, developed and constructed.

The game, developed by Blizzard Entertainment, has had millions of active subscribers of the years, and many competitive games trying to topple them over.

Let’s take a look at the aspects that have made WoW so great over the years, and if the game still has what it takes to remain the undisputed king of MMORPGs.

World of Warcraft (2004)

When World of Warcraft was released in 2004 to the public, it was competing against games like Final Fantasy XI and Lineage 2 etc. These games were extremely time-consuming and required a lot of grinding and teamwork just to level up. Blizzard took a new approach to the MMO scene, one that would see their popularity grow rapidly. They made the reward systems and leveling achievable to all. An interesting quest system meant less constant grinding, and players would not lose hours of experience when you die. They made the game more fun to play for everyone.

The game also allowed those with older laptops and PC's to purchase, download and play the game, no longer did you need to have beast specs nor grind mobs incessantly.

In the gaming industry, Blizzard has been around for decades. Their high quality games have helped them rise to become one of the most formidable PC game companies.

When people first heard that Blizzard had a new project underway (WoW), the hype quickly shot up. It’s easy to make a popular game if you’re already popular.

Never-ending storylines and updates

To compete and keep their fan based happy and interested, World of Warcraft has a extremely in-depth lore. The lore of World of Warcraft is a very fascinating one, with hundreds if not thousands of stories in it.

Blizzard Entertainment is also constantly tweaking and updating the gameplay, graphics, adding new quests and in-game features. They have a lot to live up to, a huge fan base requires a huge amount of effort to be put in to keep them interested.

We can’t mention why World of Warcraft is a king in the MMORPG world without mentioning its gameplay aspects.

World of Warcraft as an MMORPG has one of the smoothest and accurately tuned gameplay I have ever experienced. There is nothing quite like engaging in battle in the WoW combat system and getting involved in your character's moves.

Other MMORPGs have tried to replicate the standard of gameplay, like Star Wars The Old Republic, but have not had the success the way WoW has. This isn’t to say the game is bad, but they cannot replicate the detail and attention WoW has with its combat system.

Verdict

So, you ask me, is WoW still the king of MMORPGs the way it was in the past?

I have heard so many times that “this game” or “that game” will be the downfall to WoW, but nothing has yet prevailed, and I’m now convinced nothing will.

Blizzard has a tremendous team of developers working on this game, and it is hard to see them failing at the hands of the competition. If WoW does fall in the future, I think it will be because Blizzard decides to pull the plug.

There are a lot of very good MMORPGs that I would recommend to a lot of you, but to answer your question in regards to WoW. It is and still will remain the king of MMORPGs.

Technically defined as a “third-person shooter”, the first of the series was released back in 2007 and was only available on the Xbox 360. However following its explosive popularity, any PC gamer can now enjoy the games without need of a fancy console.

One of Mass Effect’s greatest assets is its amazing storyline. Play as Commander Shepard as (s)he attempts to spare the galaxy from the wrath of the mysterious Reapers. You’ll be tasked with navigating situations where your choices directly impact the narrative of the game. This makes the series highly replayable and still just as exciting each time around.

As if you needed another reason to check out this award-winning series, there are plans of a fourth installment intended for release Q4 of 2016. “Mass Effect: Andromeda”: intended as a standalone game set many years after the series’ end. But don’t let that stop you from experiencing the wonder that is diving headfirst into the original trilogy.

10. Bastion

While some games may seem too dark and heavy with its content, Bastion offers a refreshing and lighter take without skimping on story. This well-received RPG from independent developer, “Supergiant Games”, features some of the most beautiful artwork you’ll see in the genre. Along with its superb storyline and top-notch acting, you can expect to be swept away in its award winning soundtrack.

Bastion follows the story of “the kid” as he makes his way through a newly post-apocalyptic world. His only goal: collect power cores and expand his base of operations, “the Bastion”. Here is where you can really take control of the game as you move between levels and attempt to put the broken city of Caelondia back together.

One of the most defining features about Bastion is its variability. It employs a lot of creative construction reminiscent of a sandbox game. The world building possibilities definitely makes it one of the top picks for any PC gamer to try.

9. Diablo III

Diablo III was Blizzard’s long awaited sequel to the Diablo franchise. Released 12 years after its predecessor, Diablo III doesn’t disappoint with its updated look and interactive gameplay. Although playing the first two games of the series will certainly offer perspective, Diablo III is still enjoyable on its own.

The story follows your character as you come across a stranger who has lost all his memories. Your first mission is to reclaim all three parts of his broken sword in an attempt to help him regain them. This sets off a chain reaction of events sure to keep you entertained through all three acts of the story.

As custom with any Blizzard game, you can choose from five different classes to play in the game. This is brought up to six with the 2014 expansion, Diablo III: Reaper of Souls. Although it is sometimes criticized for having simpler gameplay than its predecessors, it is overall more accessible to newcomers.

8. Fallout 4

Fallout 4 – Gameplay Exploration

Perhaps there was no other game more anticipated in 2015 than Fallout 4. It had a lot to live up to in terms of story and gameplay from the much beloved Fallout 3. Perhaps best is just how good the game looks when you play it.

Fallout 4’s open world play allows for a lot of freedom in the storyline. However some may argue that the expansive world takes away from the character development in the game. Especially in terms of dialog (which has always been one of the series’ greatest strengths).

Right away you’ll have lots to do with weapon, armor, and settlement customization and development. It’s questionable if the storyline matches up to its predecessors but it’s entertaining nonetheless. Definitely one of the best games of year 2015.

7. Fallout: New Vegas

Released five years before the most recent in the series, New Vegas is just as enjoyable today as it was in 2010. There is a reason why many gamers consider this a classic. The story is character-driven and like its successor you can choose between first-person and third-person gameplay.

Fallout: New Vegas offers a character perspective never seen before in the games. You’re not the typical hero nor are you the chosen one meant to save the day. You are the mailman--or more specifically, “The Courier”.

This seemingly innocuous position sets off a whirlwind tale of revenge and a quest to reclaim the stolen “Platinum Chip" that was left in your charge. Some may complain of the game’s sometimes buggy nature, as it has a tendency for floating NPC’s and occasional lag. However despite these difficulties, New Vegas is generally well-liked and maintains a loyal fanbase.

6. The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim

You can’t go far in a gaming circle without hearing the phrase, “Skyrim is one of the best games ever made”. Anyone new to the series may be skeptical, but be assured it does not disappoint. Everything from the art direction to the soundtrack is awe-inspiring.

Perhaps it is Skyrim’s attention to detail that sets it apart from other games. It’s graphics, groundbreaking for 2011, are not as impressive now. However there are plenty of mods available to make the game appear sleek and fresh.

One of the features that makes Skyrim ageless however is its story. You are a Dragonborn, meant to fight off the dragons’ return, prophesized to bring about the end of the world. This is all set at the backdrop of a civil war creating a superbly dynamic setting.

Skyrim’s open world has also received much praise. Secret hiding spots rest at the top of every mountain and at the cleft of every canyon for boundless exploration. It doesn’t get much more epic than that.

5. Torment: Tides of Numenara

The only game on this list to not yet be released, Tides of Numenara has been in the works since its successful Kickstarter campaign in 2013. The long awaited follow up to 1999’s “Planescape: Torment” is expected sometime this year. However judging by the alpha content available, it seems the game will have been well worth the wait.

Although not a true sequel to Planescape, many of the same world elements will be carried over to Numenara. The expected release date is sometimes in 2016.

4. Pillars of Eternity

Past lives, blood rituals, cultists and soulless infants… what more could you want in a game? Pillars of Eternity has your typical stranger in a strange land setup. The only survivor of your caravan, you are “awakened” with the power to see into people’s souls and past lives.

Your protagonist leads you on a quest to uncover the cause behind the soulless newborns known as the “hollowborn”. From here the game goes by a quest by quest basis to earn experience, but that doesn’t make the battles any less intriguing.

Its tactic-based combat style that has hints of old school isometric cRPGs, but operates on a higher set of consequences. One of the most surprising features is once a companion is killed in battle, they stay dead--forever. No revives.

This perma-death system can be frustrating, considering how much work you can put into building up your companions’ stats. However these high-stakes consequences are part of what keeps you on the edge of your seat. In other words, Pillars can be challenging at times, but it’ll never be boring.

3. Dragon Age: Inquisition

Another classic franchise from BioWare, Dragon Age: Inquisition is the third game in its series. Inquisition brings in a solid storyline and well fleshed out characters that are sure to keep you invested in the game.

As the protagonist, you can choose to play between four different races and three different classes: rogue, mage and warrior. This is step up from the limited customizability from Dragon Age 2. From here you set out as the noble “inquisitor” as you attempt to stop the hordes of demons spilling into the world through a “breach” in the sky.

One of the most variable aspects of the game’s story are its romance options. Your dialogue decisions, race and gender all factor into which characters you can pursue throughout the game. These scenarios are not limited to heteronormative standards either, proving that Dragon Age is one of the more forward thinking series out there. The variability also helps keep the game interesting through multiple replays as you work to unlock the various different storylines available.

Dragon Age: Inquisition combines elements of the tactical fighting style of Dragon Age: Origins and the combat stylings of Dragon Age 2. You encounter battles in Inquisition’s different regions, scavenging loot along the way that can be used to modify stats and armor later on. Although Inquisition isn’t technically an open-world game, its areas are certainly expansive enough so it still has the same general feel.

The only criticism that seems to stand out is the sometimes buggy nature of the combat system when playing on a PC. The stop and start style of fighting to readjust your tactics is difficult to control with your standard mouse and may require some thrifty customization. But it’s nothing any experienced PC gamer shouldn’t be able to handle.

2. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

This is another cap on a fantastic trilogy of games. Witcher 3 is less buggy and more action-packed that its predecessors. From the story to its revamped fighting style this game seamlessly comes together to create one of the best gaming experiences you’ll ever have.

Witcher 3 follows our protagonist Geralt of Rivia, based on the series of novels and short stories by Polish author Andrzej Sapowski. He sets out to find his adopted daughter and defeat the “Wild Hunt” that seeks to throw their world into chaos.

Witcher’s open-world gameplay gives you plenty of time to run around and explore without bogging you down with pointless tasks. This is where much of the gameplay shines; everything you do has a purpose and a consequence. The content is so rich, but it never tires.

Overall this game is a masterpiece and is the best game of 2015.

This old-school tactic RPG is one of the classic PC game series. Originally released in 1998, the Baldur’s Gate series still has a wide breadth of followers. It is the greatest and truest implementation of a D&D computer game.

The story of the first game revolves around an orphan cast out from his home before the sudden murder of his father by a mysterious stranger. Soon you come across a rich cast of companions, each with their own talents and motivations. You set out on a quest to solve the mystery of your birth and fight scores of monstrous fiends in some of the most diverse combat you will find in an RPG.

The second game begins with your escape from imprisonment where a whole new journey begins. Companions, new and old, join you to form deep relationships and romances. The dynamic relationships you share with these characters keeps you invested every step of the way.

Your epic quests lead you to your own stronghold complete with all the problems that might come with leading such a grand stead. You’ll gain thousands of powerful magical items, each with its own unique backstory, while playing dangerous games of politics with the various factions.

If this were not enough reason to play, this is all set to the backdrop of your struggle against one of the best villains in video game history. Prepare to be hooked. This is without a doubt one of the best PC RPGs of all time and you owe it to yourself to check it out.

What do all great RPGs have in common?

In the RPG market, there are a few elements of gameplay that make the amazing games stand out from the decent. This list touches on the elements that draw gamers in and hold their attention for the countless hours that we engage with the vast worlds of RPGs.

11. Great Story and Lore

The story and lore is one of the key hallmarks of a great RPG. A world to explore is nothing without the stories that surround the people, the places, and the relics. The lore and story is part of the reason why some games are so easy to return to time and time again.

The Dragon Age universe offers an example of this. The world is not (figuratively) flat, there are places and people that build it, there is a backstory that the player can learn that makes the places real.

Then, on top of all of the history of the world, the player gets to engage in a story that, oftentimes, helps to form or change the world that the character is a part of.

Take Final Fantasy VII, for example, this game offers a world of depth with history (such as the Ancients, or Cetra, as they are sometimes referred to) and interesting characters. Great RPGs all take combat and make it into something unique, interesting, and fun.

7. Exciting Quest Lines

Not only does the player get to follow a story, they get to engage in it. These stories can accent the world or they can make up the world’s biggest problem but what is most important is that you get to engage in them - working to solve problems or create problems, if you so desire.

6. Interesting NPCs

NPCs often make up some of the most iconic character in games. If they are interesting and have backstories to be discovered, the NPCs are a definite asset to any RPG. NPCs can help push an RPG from basic to above and beyond.

The NPCs of World of Warcraft, for example, have entire novels built around them and even if you don’t know their story, you learn pieces of information about them as you play. The stories of NPCs have a way of connecting you further to the world and drawing you into the game more.

Another example is, again, from Dark Souls 2. Characters like the Emerald Herald or Lucatiel have very interesting stories attached to them. But what makes them all the more engaging is that you have to dig for their stories to understand who they are and where they come from.

The NPCs have the effect of making the world more real and not just populating the environment but accenting it, characterizing it, and creating it into something more significant. If the NPCs do this, then they help to improve the RPG.

5. Massive World Map

The massive worlds of RPGs encourage exploration and adventure - an activity that every RPG gamer loves to engage in. Discovering hidden regions, reaching the top of a mountain, and taking long treks through amazing scenery are all parts of a well-crafted RPG experience.

The crowns from the DLC of Dark Souls 2 are great example of good gear that looks great while also taking effort to acquire. The thrill of finishing the DLC and obtaining the gear is unmatched as you imagine the amazing possibilities that come from the new piece.

The crown of the Old Iron King is a personal favorite as it allows my mage to get back a few spells every couple minutes which is very helpful in such an unforgiving world.

The late-game and end-game gear can give a gamer a goal to reach for as their playing through an RPG and is a great element of an RPG game.

3. Enemy Variety

All gamers have played games where it feels like they are fighting the same enemy over and over again. These games dry up with their monotony and are frequently abandoned by the player.

Great RPGs, however, have an element of enemy variety and purpose that, instead of alienating the gamer, engages them.

Dark Souls 2 is a great example of this variety and purpose. The gamer never knows what’s around the corner, behind them, or down the next hallway and the variety adds to the anticipation, excitement, and engagement of the entire gaming experience.

Not only are they diverse in appearance, the enemies are diverse in actions and abilities.

Again, Dark Souls 2 is a prime example of this diversity. I remember while playing through Dark Souls 2 with friends of mine many occasions when we would go in to fight a boss a second or third time and the boss would suddenly do something that we had never seen before. This gameplay element kept the game from getting dry and allowed each new battle to be fun and exciting.

2. Variety of Villainous Bosses

The villains of RPGs are often so much more than meets the eye. Although some might be the basic “bad guy”, gaming companies have also been creating engaging villains with depth and meaning behind their actions.

Take Riku in Kingdom Hearts, for example, a character that grows to be Sora’s biggest adversary (or the anti-hero) after being one of Sora’s closest friends. Although the gamer might not like this change, it is one that is led up to in a progression of story; the villain has a reason to be the way they are.

The mark of a good villain is someone or something who the gamer can acknowledge as having reason for their pain. The villains have motivating factors or a reason for their actions. Great RPGs have this degree of character development for their villains in addition to their main characters and that makes the game better.

Not to mention, of course, the bosses simply having interesting mechanics and looking terrifying, interesting, or simply different.

The Butcher from Diablo is a great example. While fighting him for the first time, it’s surprising and interesting when the ground beneath your feet suddenly lights up and you rush away to avoid the fire exploding beneath you while avoiding the attacks of the Butcher.

1. A Great Adventure

The desire for adventure is part of many gamers and what draws gamers to RPGs in particular. In a great RPG, you’re set right into the adventure of a lifetime and you get to not just witness this adventure but become a part of this adventure.

The truly great RPGs give you an adventure that you can make into your own with your choices and how you handle your character. Adventure is a very human desire and the best of RPGs will give you the opportunity to become a part of something greater.
