Horror movies have always been known for their bouts of cliche characters who are facing a typically unreasonable and somewhat absent minded antagonist. As the horror genre has evolved, the villain role has become much more complex than just a giant masked man with a weapon or a poltergeist taking hold of a family, making modern horror movies as unpredictable as ever.

In 2022, the villain role in any horror movie is either completely loved or absolutely despised by viewers due to the depth they are given by the writers and directors of each film. From bone chilling entities and revived classics all the way to mental monsters and a murderous elderly couple, the genre has gifted all horror fans in 2022. Only the most disturbing and disgusting villains of the year are gathered here, so let’s step into their world and witness what makes them all so awful. Be warned: Spoilers ahead!

20. Ash, Lars, & Sandi (No Exit)

Everyone is a suspect in this realistically frightening thriller.

No Exit follows the story of a woman who is trying to find shelter during a winter storm when she realizes that there is a kidnapped girl in the back of someone’s van. She meets all of the unusual suspects while forced to take shelter with this group of strangers, and soon realizes that almost everyone she is with is somehow involved in this frightening real world scenario. Ash, Lars, and Sandi are a team of terror that can exist anywhere in the world.

19. The Government (American Carnage)

The scheme behind this elderly home is one no one would see coming.

American Carnage serves as a horror comedy that takes place in an immoral America, rooted in politics and racism. This film follows a group of teens who are made to work in an elderly facility for their freedom as unusual occurrences begin to happen. Soon, it is revealed that the facility is working towards a nefarious plot alongside the government to cover up a dark secret in this strange comical horror flick.

18. Esther (Orphan: First Kill)

Esther is a chilling trickster disguised as a child who will stop at nothing to live the life of her dreams.

Ever since the shocking 2009 horror movie Orphan, fans have been dying to see more of Isabelle Fuhrman’s tiny yet deadly Esther. 13 years later, the psychotic con artist now has a backstory that is as gripping as it is unpredictable. Esther proves to be an evil genius who sports a killer attitude in any family that she scams, especially in the newest entry to this seemingly innocent franchise

17. The Seaweed Monster (Monstrous)

Live in the 50s with Christina Ricci in this emotional and psychological monster flick.

Things are not what they seem in the pond that Christina Ricci’s character Laura lives by in the movie Monstrous. Although the Seaweed monster is terrifying in itself with visuals of soaked, rotting flesh and slimy movements, the true meaning behind what the monster really symbolizes is even more terrifying.

By the end of the film, the seaweed monster is far more than just an unpleasant being. In depth, the creature who was terrifying Laura happened to be a symbol of regret, denial, and acceptance, making this goreless horror an emotional and psychological ride.

16. The House (The Cellar)

Travel to a different dimension in this supernatural and mathematical horror.

The Cellar is about a family who moves into a new house when their teenage daughter, Ellie, suddenly goes missing after going to the cellar. When Ellie’s parents Keira and Brian begin to wonder what happened to their daughter, they discover that the entire house is essentially a portal to hell with the cellar being its hotspot. By the conclusion, each member of the family has been completely consumed by the horrors of this evil house.

15. Anansi the Spider & Mami Watu (Nanny)

Explore grief through African folkore with a nanny that is forlorn of her child.

At its heart, Nanny is a story about immigration and the hardships that come with making such a life changing decision. The film is rather calm and subtle until the titular nanny, Aisha, begins to unravel slowly as a lonely African woman who just moved to America without her only child.

Nanny uses African folklore through the forms of Anansi the Spider & Mami Watu to exemplify grief and incurable loneliness. Ultimately, the beings who have incited fear in Aisha are merely symbols that help Aisha face a shocking acceptance by the end of this visually enticing film.

14. Victory Headquarters (Don’t Worry Darling)

Take a claustrophobic journey with Florence Pugh in the seemingly normal town of Victory.

Victory Headquarters is no place for women, according to all of the men who work there in the small town of Victory. Don’t Worry Darling showcases a seemingly happy couple who is living a simple and happy life in a 1950’s white picket fence community that is placed in the middle of nowhere. As mystery builds and the intelligent Alice longs for something outside of the picturesque small town, she discovers after many tries that Victory Headquarters is a cover up for something much darker than a deserted suburb.

Alice finds that the HQ is somewhat of a portal where men go to return to their real lives, as the town of victory is a simulation where most women are trapped indefinitely. The meaning behind this film is deep chilling when the truth is revealed at the end, exposing Victory headquarters to be full of unwilling women trapped inside a simulation designed by and for men.

13. The Mind & Trauma (The Twin)

Escaping the past is never as easy as desired.

Psychological horror is abundant in The Twin from start to finish, with frightening imagery and confusing moments scattered throughout. This thrilling and mysterious film follows a family of 3, Rachel, Anthony, and their son, Elliot, who just lost their child and sibling in a horrible car accident. Elliot is the twin of the other child who was killed, or at least that is what the audience thought while waiting for this film to rise to its climax.

Elliot turns out to be a figment of Rachel’s imagination that her husband was supporting out of fragility and hope that she would heal. Their son Nathan died and Rachel created Elliot out of pain, and all the while refused to stop seeing him. As the film progresses and Rachel ceases to face her trauma, it is shown that Rachel’s imagination combined with her amount of trauma was ultimately her downfall.

12. Steve/Brendan (Fresh)

Grab a bite or two with your new date.

Serving as a cheesy rom-com in its first 30 minutes, Fresh is a movie that focuses on Noa and her journey into love. She meets Steve eventually, who she clicks with almost instantly. She decides to go on a trip with this seemingly charming man, but Upon arriving to their vacation home, Steve drugs Noa and chains her up. He then reveals that he is a cannibal who intends to take Noa apart piece by piece in order to ensure fresh meat. As the movie progresses, it is discovered that Noa is not the only victim, and that Steve’s name is actually Brendan.

If Brendan being a married man with a whole separate life isn’t enough of a twist, this villain has many more secrets that are revealed by the final act of this disgusting horror film.

11. Society & Technology (Crimes of The Future)

What are humans capable of when pain becomes pleasure?

Crimes of the Future by David Cronenberg is a grotesque and visually disturbing film that explores the society of a near future. This version of the future is one where humans have discovered ways to feel no pain and push the limits when it comes to the surgical world, making frightening looks and intense surgeries primary forms of entertainment.

This odd film focuses on a couple that benefits off of the distorted society that treats surgery as the new sex. Saul, the main object of the show, grows extra and seemingly unnecessary organs from his body. Saul’s wife, Caprice, surgically removes his extra organs while recording for the world, while doing some pretty outlandish things meanwhile. This film is not for anyone who has a weak stomach or has trouble watching body horror.

10. The Green Man (Men)

Toxic masculinity and body horror collide grotesquely in this film about a grieving woman searching for solace.

Another disturbing body horror film, Men is one of the most unusual and discomforting films of 2022. This movie dives into the frustration of the main character, Harper, who is escaping to the English countryside for a break from reality. She does find this, but not in the ways that she was hoping. Our main character is constantly harassed by multiple men throughout the film in different ways, and eventually witnesses a disturbing series of births when confronted by the Green Man which she never thought to be possible.

9. Chef Slowik (The Menu)

The upper class doesn't have the upper hand at Chef Slowik's luxury island restaurant.

Chef Slowik serves up a delectable dinner for a group of fancy guests in The Menu. Everything seems to go according to plan for the guests who paid a large chunk of money to eat on this excluded island, but things begin to go awry as the dinner progresses. The guests are exposed through the chef’s different courses, and ultimately, a kitchen worker shoots himself in the head, before the real fun begins.

Chef Slowik torments the guests as the night goes on in this offbeat horror satire. Stakes grow high as the ruthless yet dedicated chef continues to serve courses and guests grow restless. He insists that you stay for dessert!

8. Amber & Richie (SCREAM)

Toxic fandom is like, totally a thing.

SCREAM revived the beloved horror franchise after things seemingly ended in 2011 with Scream 4, this time around bringing a new set of unlucky teenagers to Woodsboro to experience the wrath of ghostface. In this cast, There was the suspicious boyfriend, Richie, who any slasher fan knew was a likely suspect. On the other hand, there was Amber, who played the role well as Tara’s best friend all the way until the final act.

This duo is particularly interesting because they play on how crazy fans can be if they go too far, which is very much something that can happen in the real world. They define toxic fandom and take it to the next level by attempting to recreate events that were devastating to the very community that they live in.

7. The UFO (Nope)

What is that up in the sky?

Nope is a mysterious horror film that features a cast full of amazing characters living in a realistic environment. Among this cast of characters, there is something in the sky that seems to be living, which comes to be the main antagonist of this suspenseful, extraterrestrial encounter. Nobody knows exactly what it is, which only adds to the chill factor of this film.

The UFO from Nope is a rather interesting horror villain in the way that the entire UFO itself is the other worldly being. There aren’t any aliens that come from the ship or any other forms of communication, which makes it more chilling than any of the other horror villains this year. What is that up in the clouds, again?

6. The Feral Predator (Prey)

The hunt is more intense than ever before in this amazingly built prequel.

The Feral Predator is a vicious hunter that stalks the native american lands in Prey. The story follows a young woman, Naru, who believes to see a thunderbird when the predator arrives on earth, but little does she know, this is far more than a sign.

The Feral Predator represents the Predator movies in all its glory while being accurately equipped with advanced space technology. As all other predators, the feral predator is a ruthless hunter who is looking for its next trophy, willing to take any measures necessary to succeed.

5. Pinhead (Hellraiser)

Pain and suffering are music to the ears of cenobites in this gory remake of a classic horror.

The 2022 rendition of Hellraiser introduces us to a new Pinhead, who is just as ruthless as the one we used to know. They are the leader of the cenobites and live to incite pain, as they claim that it is the true music of the world. This film is gory, full of amazing characters, and intense, making for an amazing thrill.

Pinhead promises nothing but pain to anyone who calls them, and they will stop at nothing to complete their duty and get the puzzle solved. Do you dare to try?

4. The Smile Entity (Smile)

Smiling is a symbol of happiness, right?

Turn your frown upside down with Smile. In this chilling movie, an entity that feeds off of depression and trauma terrorizes a therapist named Rose. The entity appears in the form of a smiling person and is seen often by whoever the victim is, turning a smile into something much more frightening than it should be.

As the film progresses, Rose sees haunting smiles everywhere and eventually becomes unhinged as the smile entity tries to take hold of her. This villain is bone chilling in the way that it is somewhat a personification of mental health issues, leaving room for reality to mix with horror and providing a terrifying experience.

3. The Creature (Barbarian)

General horror movie rule: Don't go in the basement.

Barbarian is a mysterious and claustrophobic film that follows Tess, who is renting out a seemingly normal Airbnb. Although there are seemingly many villains in this film, the true villain is yards below the basement of the house, living in a series of dark tunnels built by an ex serial killer.

The Creature in Barbarian is one of the best horror villains of the year due to the fact that she was a complete secret for a good part of the movie. Once she was introduced, her screen time was limited and quiet, building the atmosphere to a tense level before moments of destruction. When the creature did strike, even the bravest of horror fans jumped out of their seats.

2. Art The Clown (Terrifier 2)

Art the clown is a walking nightmare in this chilling slasher.

Killer clowns that stand outside the laws of time and space have always been frightening, but Art the Clown brings the title to a new level of messed up. Terrifier 2 is a gut wrenching sequel to the low budget film Terrifier, which introduced Art as its primary evil clown. Now that the year is 2022, Art is back, and bloodier than ever.

Art the Clown never speaks and carries around a giant black bag full of murdering weapons, not to mention that he is at least 6 feet tall with full face makeup. He is ruthless and is entertained while he kills his victims, adding to the level of discomfort he brings to horror fans. If you have a weak heart or stomach, I would not recommend this, as Art does not care.

1. Pearl (X, Pearl)

I'm a STAR!

Pearl does not only redefine horror villains altogether, but has proven to be a murderous psychopath even into her old age. In 2022, horror fans were blessed enough to see Pearl’s entire and horrifying life in two separate stories with the odd films X and Pearl. In these films, our favorite female psychopath played by Mia Goth was the main antagonist in both.

Pearl is hell bent on getting what she wants at one point, and eventually resorts to dealing with what she has. Although this is something that she seems to be set on, she is truly unhappy and bitter underneath her facade of acceptance. Since she has serial killer tendencies, this leads to her turning into an unsuspecting villain. What harm is a farm girl, what harm is an old lady? Come down to Powder Keg farms and find out.

Suspicion falls upon a newly arrived strange Japanese man after Officer Jong-goo's daughter also starts showing the symptoms of the illness. As the illness had started after his arrival, his daughter's shoe was found in his home. Jong-goo meets a mysterious girl named Moo-myeong who sometimes suddenly vanishes.

Out of desperation, Jong-goo seeks the help of a shaman for his daughter's cure. But he's unable to bear the pain of the sacred ritual on her possessed daughter and stops it.

The Wailing gives you hints about the ending throughout the film, but you'll never guess the plot twist that awaits at the end.

24. Ouija (2014)

After the death of Laine’s best friend Debbie, Laine and her friends try to contact her through an Ouija board she found in Debbie’s room. But instead, she gets into contact with a spirit named DZ.

Soon the spirit begins to show various signs of its presence and becomes a threat to their lives. As Laine and her search deeper, they find out their death is inevitable unless they can send the spirit back by closing the portal they opened.

The Exorcism has many gruesome scenes, due to which it is R-rated. The movie shows explicit details of an exorcism which becomes almost unbearable to watch at some parts. Oh, and trust me, you won’t be able to sleep in your room alone after watching this.

22. 1408 (2007)

1408 is a psychological paranormal movie in which Mike Enslin is a writer who had lost his daughter and then had separated from his wife. He visits various haunted places and writes novels about them. However, he does not believe in paranormal activity himself.

One day, Mike receives a postcard, asking him to stay at Manhattan's Dolphin Hotel's room 1408. The hotel's manager tries his best to stop him from staying in that room, but he disagrees. Soon after entering the room, Mike experiences a series of events that turn his life upside down.

Annabelle, a prequel of The Conjuring (2013), follows the story of John Form and his pregnant wife, Mia. John gifts Annabelle to his wife as a rare vintage doll for their first child.

Jamie figures out that his wife’s death may relate to the ghost of Mary Shaw. A deceased ventriloquist who was accused of kidnapping a young boy. Due to which she was killed by the town residents and was buried with her hundred dolls.

Mary Shaw’s spirit puts a curse on the town and brings evil to anyone who lives in the town now. Jamie has lost his wife, but now he’s also in the risk of losing his own life.

18. Paranormal Activity (2007)

Paranormal Activity is about a young couple, Micah and Katie, who move into their new home in LA. Soon, the couple starts being haunted in their home by a supernatural presence. Micah sets up a camera in their home to capture what is happening in their home.

The hauntings in their home will make you have goosebumps all over your body. After all, Paranormal Activity is a blockbuster film that has earned $194 million worldwide.

17. Evil Dead (2013)

Mia and her brother, his girlfriend, and three friends go to their family’s remote cabin in the woods. To help her recover from her drug addiction problem.

Eric, Mia’s friend, finds a Book of the Dead called Naturom Demonto in the cabin, which he reads aloud to all his friends. Reading the book awakens an ancient demon entity that soon possesses Mia. Putting great danger on Mia and her friends.

Eleven years later, after their parents' violent death, Tim is released from the mental asylum and reunites with his sister Kaylie. She believes an antique mirror in their house caused the death of their parents. They are claiming that anyone who looks in the supernatural mirror is convinced to do anything.

Kaylie is determined to destroy the mirror. But is she capable enough to destroy such a powerful supernatural entity?

The movie has two plotlines, the present and the other being eleven years later. Oculus is an unpredictable movie that would keep you on edge with its suspense and plot twist in the end.

The plot takes place in 1977 where Susie Bannion, an ambitious woman, enrolls in a renowned dance academy in Berlin. At the same time of her arrival, a student, Patricia Hingle, disappears after she reveals to her psychotherapist that the academy’s matrons are covenants of witches that worship a trio of witches called Three Mothers.

Suspiria has many unique visuals with a mix of witchcraft and scenes that would make your jaw-drop. It is a movie which would give you a very different and terrifying experience.

14. It Follows (2014)

After Jaime Height, a 19-year-old girl, has a sexual encounter for the first time with her new boyfriend, Hugh, a curse passes on to her. A curse that can only be passed by having sexual intercourse. The only way she can get rid of it is by giving it to someone else.

Death begins to follow her as a ghost everywhere and in every way possible. Jamie’s friends are unable to believe her until they notice supernatural entities trying to harm her themselves. Jamie’s friends gather together to help her escape and protect herself.

It Follows a modern and different horror movie plot that perfectly suits the 21st century. Not to mention that it also has a crazy amount of jump scares. But be prepared because this movie will make you get a bit scared of having sex with someone for the first time.

13. Mama (2013)

Jeffrey Desange is a stockbroker who lost his money after the financial crisis of 2008. He becomes disturbed and murders his colleague and wife. He takes his two daughters, a toddler, and a baby to a cabin in the woods and tries to shoot them.

However, when he is about to shoot, a dark shadowy entity pulls him back and kills him. The two girls are abandoned, and the shadowy entity looks after them in the cabin to whom they refer to as "mama." After five years, they are discovered and taken to their uncle's home, where the shadowy entity continues to live with them.

Mama is a paranormal movie while also being an emotional movie. It will make you scared, but at the same time, you'll be empathetic about the tragedies of the characters.

12. Don’t Listen (2020)

Don’t Listen is a Spanish movie also known as Voces. After moving to a new house, Daniel and Sara’s son, Eric, begins to behave differently and tells his parents he has heard voices in the house asking him to make drawings. Eric’s parents arrange his meetings with a doctor who says the voices are only his imagination, but the doctor dies brutally in a car accident while driving back home.

A few days later, Eric strangely dies. Devastated by the death, Sara goes to her mother’s house to rest for a few days. While Daniel is at home, he’s sending a voice message to Sara, but in the voice message, he hears the voice of Eric.

Daniel consults Germán Redondo, a supernatural investigator about the voice of his son. Germán investigates the house along with his daughter Ruth. Soon, they find out the history behind the house and the danger they are in because of a powerful paranormal entity there.

11. Sinister (2012)

Ellison Oswald is a true-crime writer who has been unable to write any bestseller book in a decade. Desperate for a hit, Ellison moves into a house with his wife Tracey, daughter Allison and son Trevor, where previously a family had been murdered.

Ellison finds several old footages in the attic and clues that prove a dangerous paranormal entity in the house. Each shows a family being brutally murdered by someone.

While unraveling the mystery of the crime, Ellison realizes that living in the house can be fatal for him and his whole family. Ellison is instead now concerned to save his family from ending up in the same fate.

Sinister is one of my favorite horror movies. It has a fascinating yet spooky story that shocks you to your core in the end.

10. The Babadook (2014)

Amelia loses her husband in a car accident while on her way for delivery of their first child, Samuel. She struggles to survive as a single mom and is unable to recover from the loss. Samuel has a fear of monsters which makes him behave violently, due to which his friends become distanced from him.

Amelia and Samuel find a mysterious book in their basement called "Mister Babadook," which has images of a dark shadow-like figure named Babadook who lives in the dark areas of their house. Amelia reads the book to him, and he becomes more scared and violent after reading the book.

Soon, Amelia begins to feel a paranormal entity in their house and tries to destroy the book. However, the next day, the book returns to her.

The Babadook represents how you are more vulnerable to the demons outside you if you're weak from the inside. It shows the struggle of a mother and her son trying to save each other from The Babadook.

They have no one but each other, and they can't let anyone take that away.

9. The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)

Three severely wounded dead bodies are found at a crime scene. But a mysterious body is also found, which does not match the crime scene and has absolutely no wounds. The Sheriff brings the unidentified corpse, Jane Doe, to two coroners, a son, and a father, to investigate the corpse’s cause of death.

On a stormy night, the father, Tommy, and son, Austin begin the autopsy of Jane Doe. Surprisingly, the corpse is perfect from the outside but has severe internal injuries. As the autopsy continues, Austin and Tommy find some frightening clues behind Jane Doe’s death.

This Jane Doe is unlike anything they have seen before. Tommy and Austin could have never imagined that this autopsy would blow their minds and become a threat to their own lives. The Autopsy of Jane Doe has one of the most interesting paranormal movie plots, which would leave you utterly shocked in the end.

8. Us (2019)

Us follows the story of the Wilson Family, which goes to Santa Cruz, California, for a vacation. While on the beach, their youngest son, Jason, wanders off and sees a mysterious man. His mother, Adelaide, becomes worried as she recalls a traumatic experience of her past where she saw her doppelgänger in a mirror house at that beach.

The same night, a mysterious family in red clothes appears in front of their house. The family breaks into their home, and shockingly, they look the same as each Wilson family member. Except they have a grotesque appearance.

The Wilson family must fight their doppelgänger to survive. But they have each other, which makes them strong. Us is a movie with a unique storyline and a plot twist that you could never see coming.

7. Insidious (2010)

A couple moves to a new house with their sons Dalton and Foster and an infant daughter. One night, Dalton goes inside the attic of their home, where he sees the shadow of an unknown man. Dalton becomes frightened and falls from the attic stairs, and gets into a coma the next day.

After three months, his family brought him back home. But then his mother, Renai, starts experiencing paranormal activity inside the house and is attacked by a demon in the house, after which they decide to move to a new home.

However, Renai continues to see a paranormal entity even in the new house. One day, Renai's mother, Loraine, sees a dream that indicates a paranormal entity with Dalton. After Renai hears the dream, she contacts Elise Rainier, a psychic who comes with her paranormal investigators Tucker and Specs.

Elise investigates their house, after which she says that Dalton isn't in coma, but instead, he is stuck in the purgatory realm called "The Further," and the spirits aim to use Dalton's body to enter the physical world.

6. The Ring (2002)

The Ring follows the story of Rachel Keller, a journalist who investigates a videotape that may be linked to the death of four teenagers, including her niece. A legend says that anyone who watches the videotape, receives a call right afterward and then dies seven days later.

Rachel goes to the same place where the girls had watched the videotape, and she watches the videotape herself. When the videotape ends, she also receives a phone call. She shows the videotape to her husband, and her son sees the videotape as well, putting them both at risk.

As Rachel continues the investigation, the truth behind the videotape begins to unfold. After knowing the truth, Rachel gets in fear of losing her son, husband, and her own life in seven days.

The Ring is considered an all-time top scary paranormal movie. It has creepy scenes and jump-scares which will keep you up all night out of fear.

3. The Witch (2015)

In 1630, in New England, William and his wife Katherine were cast out of Puritan plantation due to religious conflicts. They settle in a barn at the edge of the forest with their daughter Thomasin, son Caleb, Twins Mercy and Jones, and Samuel, whom she gives birth at the barn.

One day, Thomasin is playing with Samuel in the forest, and suddenly the Samuel vanishes. Katherine blames and mistreats her daughter for losing Samuel.

William goes to the forest for hunting, but while aiming at a rabbit, he gets hurt instead. So Thomasin, Caleb, their dog, and horse head out to the forest for hunting, but Caleb gets lost in the woods, and Thomasin falls from the horse and faints. Thomasin's mom again blames her for losing Caleb and punishes her.

2. Conjuring (2013)

Conjuring is the first movie of a popular franchise which is listed as the groundbreaking scariest movie. It is the 26th highest-grossing horror film at the worldwide box office. Conjuring is based on the case of famous paranormal investigators Loraine and Ed Warren.

Conjuring follows the story of Roger, Carolyn, and their five daughters, who moved into a new house in 1971. After experiencing some horrific moments of paranormal activity and trauma, the Warrens contact Ed and Loraine. The investigators tell them multiple supernatural entities infest their house, and one entity, in particular, is filled with hate and wants to destroy the Warren family.

Conjuring sets a new standard of horror films and prepares the audience for a level of horror that would scare their pants off and give them a nightmare for days.

1. Get out (2017)

After dating for a couple of months, Chris Washington and Rose Armitage drive to her house upstate to meet her parents and spend the weekend. Chris, at first, is worried about meeting a white family while being a black man. Surprisingly, Rose’s family is highly accommodating, which makes him feel better.

The next day, Chris meets Rose’s extended family in an annual family gathering. Chris notices extremely disturbing behavior by her family, which makes him very uncomfortable. But Chris sees strange behavioral traits of the African-American servants in their house.

However, as the evening progresses, the dark secret of their family begins to unfold. Chris had no clue he had signed up for a weekend that would change his whole life.

In the first few minutes of this movie, things are slowly progressing, and you’re thinking, “it doesn’t seem too bad; what worst can happen?” But oh boy, you’re in for a crazy ride. The movie gets so insane after a point you literally won’t get a second to breathe.
