As of now, Dead by Daylight boasts 31 killers you can play as or (attempt to) survive against. However, not all the killers are created equal. Some are goofy, some are fairly creepy, and some are utterly terrifying. If you’re curious which killers provide the most scares, check out the top 10 scariest killers in Dead by Daylight.

10. Huntress

Don't be fooled by her appearance...this woman is more than animal than man.

Why She's Scary

Any Dead by Daylight player knows the sound of the Huntress’s lullaby. Her haunting song echoes throughout the map. What sounds like a soothing melody is truly a warning of impending doom, followed shortly after by flying hatchets.

Huntress Backstory:

The Huntress, born Anna, was raised by her single mother to survive life in the harsh Russian wilderness. One day while her mother and her were on a hunt, the elk they were hunting tried to attack Anna, but her mother sacrificed herself so Anna could live. Anna killed the elk with an axe, but it was too late for her mother–her mother sang her a lullaby to calm Anna as her mother slowly died. As she grew older, she relied on the survival skills her mother had taught her in order to survive on her own. Her humanity slowly slipped away. She became bored with hunting animals and started hunting unsuspecting humans traversing the woods, but she would never kill little girls; seeing her former self in them, she would attempt to care for them, but they never survived long. This led her to don an animal mask her mother made before she would raid nearby villages, slaughter families, and kidnap their daughters. Soon the word began to spread of The Huntress who haunted the Red Forest–a monstrous force who killed men and ate little girls. Although the war lowered the population, thereby decreasing the tales of the Huntress, soldiers’ bodies continued to turn up covered in axe wounds…

9. Doctor

He brings a new meaning to shock therapy.

Why He's Scary

Just looking at the Doctor gives you the creeps. His feeled back flesh, cruel medical devices that seem like medieval torture devices, and electrodes in his eyes?! Definitely sends chills down your spine. On top of that, the Doctor boasts an ability to inflict madness upon the survivors, via an electroshock blast. This madness ability causes the player immense difficulty in distinguishing reality from hallucination–particularly in tegards to chase music, hallucinations of the doctor, and fake pallets.

Doctor Backstory:

Herman Carter, who later became known as the Doctor, was always fascinated by analyzing and deconstructing the human psyche. He got recruited into an advanced neuroscience programme at Yale, which was actually just a front for the CIA’s experiments into interrogation and intelligence. Carter joined an off-site secretary facility called the Léry’s Memorial Institute in Illinois, where he was mentored by the demented Dr. Otto Stamper. Dr. Stamper encouraged Carter to push the boundaries of experimentation, which resulted in cruel and bizarre torture in order to attempt to control people’s minds. In addition to “experimenting” on his patients, Carter experimented on himself, peeling open his head and sticking sensors and electrodes in his head. In efforts to prevent this information leaking to the press, the government condemned the side and redacted all knowledge of the institute.

8. Onryō

Take one look at her and you'll want to run the other way.

Why She's Scary

Onryō's appearance and animations are creepy enough--especially the animation of her crawling out of the TV. The fact that she can crawl out of a TV at nearly any point in time keeps you on edge at all times. Then add in her phase ability, allowing her to traverse the map and suddenly appear–seemingly out of nowhere–and you've got one creepy killer.

Onryō Backstory:

Sadako Yamamura was the daughter of a famous seer from Izu Oshima in Japan, leading her to be born a powerful onryō. Sadako’s powers were incredibly potent and nearly impossible to control, especially when she became upset. When a journalist called her mother a fraud, Sadako’s powers flared, causing the journalist to collapse to the floor, struck dead. Everything spiraled out of control after that–her mother dying soon after. After her mother’s passing, Sadako was lured to a decrepit well and knocked over the head, causing her to fall down the well. Shortly after, someone closed a lid over the well, trapping Sadako alive. She tried to climb out, but it was no use. Her powerful spirit was trapped for decades, until a cabin was built over the well, allowing her an opportunity for revenge. She utilized all her power to curse a videotape in the cabin, causing any viewer to die seven days after watching the tape. Her rage continued to grow, bolstering her power and unleashing her from the well.

Why She's Scary

Spirit has a gruesome character design, made all the more terrifying when paired with her glitching jarring body movements and the eerie sounds she makes. Add onto that the fact that she can phase shift across the map and you've got eerie jumspcare galore.

Spirit Backstory:

Rin Yamaoka was the only child in her family, born and raised in Kagawa, Japan. Her education and mother’s illness put strain on the family’s finances. Despite Rin taking up a job to help with the finances, the situation was quite tense. Her father snapped when he was fired from his job and dismembered Rin’s mother with a katana. When Rin came home to discover her mother’s dismembered body, her father attacked her with the katana, striking her arm, thigh, and dismembering and beating her in the process. As she tried to escape, her father threw her against a glass partition, causing her to crash through the glass. As she crawled through the shards of glass, she vowed that she would not rest until she had her revenge…and the darkness promised her blood and vengeance.

Anyone who's played Dead by Daylight knows the ghoulish screeeches of the nurse. Her eerie screams paired with her phase-shifting ability make her a frightening and formidable foe. Then when you come face to face with her, you're met with an eerie character design that makes her even more scary.

Nurse Backstory:

Sally Smithson and her husband moved to town with high hopes, but those hopes were soon tarnished. After being assaulted by her husband’s foreman, Sally decided to take a job at the only place she could get hired–the Crotus Prenn Asylum. After decades of working the night shift, and being verbally and physically abused by patients and employees, Sally was driven insane, culminating in her efforts to purify the asylum residents and staff, by killing over 50 patients and four staff members. She was transported in an ambulance, but that ambulance never made it to the hospital…the ambulance was found crashed in the nearby woods with all the staff dead and Sally nowhere to be found…

Why He's Scary

Don't be fooled by the striking mask–Ghostface is a master of stealth. His ability to sneak up on you from afar, without any indication of triggering your terror radius, makes him a formidable foe. If you are not constantly on guard, he will build his power as he stalks you, before he strikes.

Ghostface Backstory:

Danny Johnson, also known as Jed Olsen, was a fame-driven serial killer who reveled in news coverage of his murders across the states. He became well-known for stalking his victims and stealthily killing them in a white grotesque mask with a black hooded outfit. He decided he was not getting enough news coverage, so he wrote articles about himself, leaking footage of his murders. As soon as the investigation pointed towards him, he left town, and has since continued his self-publicized murder spree.

4. Hag

She looks mad and she's got reason to be.

Why She's Scary

The Hag is an original character with a haunting character design. Her grotesque sounds and movements add to her overall frightening atmosphere. What makes her even more terrifying is her ability to lay traps that once triggered, allow her to teleport to that location, allowing for ample jumpscares.

Hag Backstory:

Lisa Sherwood grew up in a remote village in the bayou. Lisa loved drawing charms for safety and good fortune–a tradition passed down by the elders. During a horrible storm, Lisa got lost in the woods, where she was soon after kidnapped. Her kidnappers kept her chained in a flooded cellar, with other prisoners whose wounds were swarmed with flies. The kidnappers carved up the prisoners’ bodies and ate them down to the bone. Lisa’s resilience allowed her to survive for weeks, despite being starved, infected, and mutilated. With her dying breath, Lisa etched the symbols her elders taught her into the floor, and in response, she was overtaken by a dark hunger which yearned for blood and vengeance. Eventually, the village search party found the old shack in the swamp, but Lisa’s body was the only body not to be found…

Why She's Scary

The Pig's stealth ability makes her extremely difficult to see when she wants to sneak up on you (aided by the fact that the terror radius is inactive when her sneak mode is on). The character design and sound when she attacks from her stealth position add to the scare factor.

Her ability to place the Jigsaw reverse bear trap on your head also adds to the scare factor, as you have a timer for which you must find the key in one of Jigsaws games around the map…if you don't find the key in time, you die, adding tension to the game…

Pig Backstory:

John Kramer, who became known as the serial killer Jigsaw, planned for his son to be born during the Chinese Zodiac’s Year of the Pig–owing to the pig's representation of fertility and rebirth–but that plan was destroyed when a junkie broke into his wife’s clinic and smashed the door into this wife’s stomach, killing their unborn son. After his unborn son died, John captured the junkie responsible for his son’s death and made him his first victim (“subject”). The pig soon became a representation of the disease festering inside of John. To those subjects who emerged victorious, The Pig could still be a symbol of rebirth, into their new lives as apprentices of Jigsaw. This was the case for Amanda Young. However, she became too dependent on John and she failed her second test, letting her rage and jealousy take over, resulting in her death. However, the entity claimed her soul, allowing her to live on as The Pig for the rest of her days.

Why He's Scary

With his ability active, the Shape's terror radius is non-existent, allowing him to sneak up on you without you knowing until it's too late…This allows for ample jumpscares. Add in the Halloween-themed chase music and you've got a true boogeyman.

Shape Backstory:

Although he is human, Michael Myers is pure evil. Even as a child, Michael felt he needed to kill in order to find inner peace, starting with his sister. He was found dressed as a clown, silent, but deadly. The authorities attempted to rehabilitate Michael by sending him to a mental institution, but the therapy and scream-filled nights caused him to become even more demented. All was fine…until Michael escaped.

1. Dredge

Now that is something straight outta hell!

Why He's Scary

The dredge is the first original non-human killer and only killer who does not have a humanoid shape. It's appearance is a twisted grotesque mass of flesh and darkness, bringing with it the sounds of tortured souls. What makes the Dredge even scarier is the fact that it's Nightfall ability causes the survivors to be immersed in darkness…If that was not Scary enough, while Nightfall is active, the Dredge has the fastest situational movement speed with a speed of 38m/s. On top of that, the Dredge can teleport via the lockers–yes, even if you are hiding in a locker–with terrifying animations to signify its arrival.

Dredge Backstory:

The Dredge is a non-human entity born from the twisted mind of Otto Stamper (yes the same Otto Stamper who mentored the Doctor). Otto Stamper started a commune called “The Fold,” on a private American island in the 1960s. However, it became clear as time progressed that Otto’s intentions were anything but benevolent. As his followers began to disappear, uncertainty and fear spread amongst the community. He blamed his followers for summoning the Druanee (the Dredge), before he proceeded to showcase his evil by sacrificing a journalist who was planning to expose him. He claimed the sacrifice would banish the Druanee, but in reality, it struck fear and darkness into their hearts, causing the Druanee (Dredge) to begin to form. The screams and curses grew as the community failed to contain their darkness, but the more they tried, the quicker the darkness spread, until their mental dam burst and a manifestation of hellish darkness was unleashed.

The community began to tear each other apart–metaphorically and literally. As Otto watched the community tear itself apart, suddenly a thick oozy darkness rose from the ground and a formless mass of flesh began to form to feed upon the souls and flesh of the community, absorbing and spreading the darkness, savoring the torment.

Otto watched as the mass formed into the very thing he had imagined–and forced his community to imagine all these years. Just as easily as it had emerged, it disappeared into the shadows. Who knows where it will turn up next?

Horror movies have always been known for their bouts of cliche characters who are facing a typically unreasonable and somewhat absent minded antagonist. As the horror genre has evolved, the villain role has become much more complex than just a giant masked man with a weapon or a poltergeist taking hold of a family, making modern horror movies as unpredictable as ever.

In 2022, the villain role in any horror movie is either completely loved or absolutely despised by viewers due to the depth they are given by the writers and directors of each film. From bone chilling entities and revived classics all the way to mental monsters and a murderous elderly couple, the genre has gifted all horror fans in 2022. Only the most disturbing and disgusting villains of the year are gathered here, so let’s step into their world and witness what makes them all so awful. Be warned: Spoilers ahead!

20. Ash, Lars, & Sandi (No Exit)

Everyone is a suspect in this realistically frightening thriller.

No Exit follows the story of a woman who is trying to find shelter during a winter storm when she realizes that there is a kidnapped girl in the back of someone’s van. She meets all of the unusual suspects while forced to take shelter with this group of strangers, and soon realizes that almost everyone she is with is somehow involved in this frightening real world scenario. Ash, Lars, and Sandi are a team of terror that can exist anywhere in the world.

19. The Government (American Carnage)

The scheme behind this elderly home is one no one would see coming.

American Carnage serves as a horror comedy that takes place in an immoral America, rooted in politics and racism. This film follows a group of teens who are made to work in an elderly facility for their freedom as unusual occurrences begin to happen. Soon, it is revealed that the facility is working towards a nefarious plot alongside the government to cover up a dark secret in this strange comical horror flick.

18. Esther (Orphan: First Kill)

Esther is a chilling trickster disguised as a child who will stop at nothing to live the life of her dreams.

Ever since the shocking 2009 horror movie Orphan, fans have been dying to see more of Isabelle Fuhrman’s tiny yet deadly Esther. 13 years later, the psychotic con artist now has a backstory that is as gripping as it is unpredictable. Esther proves to be an evil genius who sports a killer attitude in any family that she scams, especially in the newest entry to this seemingly innocent franchise

17. The Seaweed Monster (Monstrous)

Live in the 50s with Christina Ricci in this emotional and psychological monster flick.

Things are not what they seem in the pond that Christina Ricci’s character Laura lives by in the movie Monstrous. Although the Seaweed monster is terrifying in itself with visuals of soaked, rotting flesh and slimy movements, the true meaning behind what the monster really symbolizes is even more terrifying.

By the end of the film, the seaweed monster is far more than just an unpleasant being. In depth, the creature who was terrifying Laura happened to be a symbol of regret, denial, and acceptance, making this goreless horror an emotional and psychological ride.

16. The House (The Cellar)

Travel to a different dimension in this supernatural and mathematical horror.

The Cellar is about a family who moves into a new house when their teenage daughter, Ellie, suddenly goes missing after going to the cellar. When Ellie’s parents Keira and Brian begin to wonder what happened to their daughter, they discover that the entire house is essentially a portal to hell with the cellar being its hotspot. By the conclusion, each member of the family has been completely consumed by the horrors of this evil house.

15. Anansi the Spider & Mami Watu (Nanny)

Explore grief through African folkore with a nanny that is forlorn of her child.

At its heart, Nanny is a story about immigration and the hardships that come with making such a life changing decision. The film is rather calm and subtle until the titular nanny, Aisha, begins to unravel slowly as a lonely African woman who just moved to America without her only child.

Nanny uses African folklore through the forms of Anansi the Spider & Mami Watu to exemplify grief and incurable loneliness. Ultimately, the beings who have incited fear in Aisha are merely symbols that help Aisha face a shocking acceptance by the end of this visually enticing film.

14. Victory Headquarters (Don’t Worry Darling)

Take a claustrophobic journey with Florence Pugh in the seemingly normal town of Victory.

Victory Headquarters is no place for women, according to all of the men who work there in the small town of Victory. Don’t Worry Darling showcases a seemingly happy couple who is living a simple and happy life in a 1950’s white picket fence community that is placed in the middle of nowhere. As mystery builds and the intelligent Alice longs for something outside of the picturesque small town, she discovers after many tries that Victory Headquarters is a cover up for something much darker than a deserted suburb.

Alice finds that the HQ is somewhat of a portal where men go to return to their real lives, as the town of victory is a simulation where most women are trapped indefinitely. The meaning behind this film is deep chilling when the truth is revealed at the end, exposing Victory headquarters to be full of unwilling women trapped inside a simulation designed by and for men.

13. The Mind & Trauma (The Twin)

Escaping the past is never as easy as desired.

Psychological horror is abundant in The Twin from start to finish, with frightening imagery and confusing moments scattered throughout. This thrilling and mysterious film follows a family of 3, Rachel, Anthony, and their son, Elliot, who just lost their child and sibling in a horrible car accident. Elliot is the twin of the other child who was killed, or at least that is what the audience thought while waiting for this film to rise to its climax.

Elliot turns out to be a figment of Rachel’s imagination that her husband was supporting out of fragility and hope that she would heal. Their son Nathan died and Rachel created Elliot out of pain, and all the while refused to stop seeing him. As the film progresses and Rachel ceases to face her trauma, it is shown that Rachel’s imagination combined with her amount of trauma was ultimately her downfall.

12. Steve/Brendan (Fresh)

Grab a bite or two with your new date.

Serving as a cheesy rom-com in its first 30 minutes, Fresh is a movie that focuses on Noa and her journey into love. She meets Steve eventually, who she clicks with almost instantly. She decides to go on a trip with this seemingly charming man, but Upon arriving to their vacation home, Steve drugs Noa and chains her up. He then reveals that he is a cannibal who intends to take Noa apart piece by piece in order to ensure fresh meat. As the movie progresses, it is discovered that Noa is not the only victim, and that Steve’s name is actually Brendan.

If Brendan being a married man with a whole separate life isn’t enough of a twist, this villain has many more secrets that are revealed by the final act of this disgusting horror film.

11. Society & Technology (Crimes of The Future)

What are humans capable of when pain becomes pleasure?

Crimes of the Future by David Cronenberg is a grotesque and visually disturbing film that explores the society of a near future. This version of the future is one where humans have discovered ways to feel no pain and push the limits when it comes to the surgical world, making frightening looks and intense surgeries primary forms of entertainment.

This odd film focuses on a couple that benefits off of the distorted society that treats surgery as the new sex. Saul, the main object of the show, grows extra and seemingly unnecessary organs from his body. Saul’s wife, Caprice, surgically removes his extra organs while recording for the world, while doing some pretty outlandish things meanwhile. This film is not for anyone who has a weak stomach or has trouble watching body horror.

10. The Green Man (Men)

Toxic masculinity and body horror collide grotesquely in this film about a grieving woman searching for solace.

Another disturbing body horror film, Men is one of the most unusual and discomforting films of 2022. This movie dives into the frustration of the main character, Harper, who is escaping to the English countryside for a break from reality. She does find this, but not in the ways that she was hoping. Our main character is constantly harassed by multiple men throughout the film in different ways, and eventually witnesses a disturbing series of births when confronted by the Green Man which she never thought to be possible.

9. Chef Slowik (The Menu)

The upper class doesn't have the upper hand at Chef Slowik's luxury island restaurant.

Chef Slowik serves up a delectable dinner for a group of fancy guests in The Menu. Everything seems to go according to plan for the guests who paid a large chunk of money to eat on this excluded island, but things begin to go awry as the dinner progresses. The guests are exposed through the chef’s different courses, and ultimately, a kitchen worker shoots himself in the head, before the real fun begins.

Chef Slowik torments the guests as the night goes on in this offbeat horror satire. Stakes grow high as the ruthless yet dedicated chef continues to serve courses and guests grow restless. He insists that you stay for dessert!

8. Amber & Richie (SCREAM)

Toxic fandom is like, totally a thing.

SCREAM revived the beloved horror franchise after things seemingly ended in 2011 with Scream 4, this time around bringing a new set of unlucky teenagers to Woodsboro to experience the wrath of ghostface. In this cast, There was the suspicious boyfriend, Richie, who any slasher fan knew was a likely suspect. On the other hand, there was Amber, who played the role well as Tara’s best friend all the way until the final act.

This duo is particularly interesting because they play on how crazy fans can be if they go too far, which is very much something that can happen in the real world. They define toxic fandom and take it to the next level by attempting to recreate events that were devastating to the very community that they live in.

7. The UFO (Nope)

What is that up in the sky?

Nope is a mysterious horror film that features a cast full of amazing characters living in a realistic environment. Among this cast of characters, there is something in the sky that seems to be living, which comes to be the main antagonist of this suspenseful, extraterrestrial encounter. Nobody knows exactly what it is, which only adds to the chill factor of this film.

The UFO from Nope is a rather interesting horror villain in the way that the entire UFO itself is the other worldly being. There aren’t any aliens that come from the ship or any other forms of communication, which makes it more chilling than any of the other horror villains this year. What is that up in the clouds, again?

6. The Feral Predator (Prey)

The hunt is more intense than ever before in this amazingly built prequel.

The Feral Predator is a vicious hunter that stalks the native american lands in Prey. The story follows a young woman, Naru, who believes to see a thunderbird when the predator arrives on earth, but little does she know, this is far more than a sign.

The Feral Predator represents the Predator movies in all its glory while being accurately equipped with advanced space technology. As all other predators, the feral predator is a ruthless hunter who is looking for its next trophy, willing to take any measures necessary to succeed.

5. Pinhead (Hellraiser)

Pain and suffering are music to the ears of cenobites in this gory remake of a classic horror.

The 2022 rendition of Hellraiser introduces us to a new Pinhead, who is just as ruthless as the one we used to know. They are the leader of the cenobites and live to incite pain, as they claim that it is the true music of the world. This film is gory, full of amazing characters, and intense, making for an amazing thrill.

Pinhead promises nothing but pain to anyone who calls them, and they will stop at nothing to complete their duty and get the puzzle solved. Do you dare to try?

4. The Smile Entity (Smile)

Smiling is a symbol of happiness, right?

Turn your frown upside down with Smile. In this chilling movie, an entity that feeds off of depression and trauma terrorizes a therapist named Rose. The entity appears in the form of a smiling person and is seen often by whoever the victim is, turning a smile into something much more frightening than it should be.

As the film progresses, Rose sees haunting smiles everywhere and eventually becomes unhinged as the smile entity tries to take hold of her. This villain is bone chilling in the way that it is somewhat a personification of mental health issues, leaving room for reality to mix with horror and providing a terrifying experience.

3. The Creature (Barbarian)

General horror movie rule: Don't go in the basement.

Barbarian is a mysterious and claustrophobic film that follows Tess, who is renting out a seemingly normal Airbnb. Although there are seemingly many villains in this film, the true villain is yards below the basement of the house, living in a series of dark tunnels built by an ex serial killer.

The Creature in Barbarian is one of the best horror villains of the year due to the fact that she was a complete secret for a good part of the movie. Once she was introduced, her screen time was limited and quiet, building the atmosphere to a tense level before moments of destruction. When the creature did strike, even the bravest of horror fans jumped out of their seats.

2. Art The Clown (Terrifier 2)

Art the clown is a walking nightmare in this chilling slasher.

Killer clowns that stand outside the laws of time and space have always been frightening, but Art the Clown brings the title to a new level of messed up. Terrifier 2 is a gut wrenching sequel to the low budget film Terrifier, which introduced Art as its primary evil clown. Now that the year is 2022, Art is back, and bloodier than ever.

Art the Clown never speaks and carries around a giant black bag full of murdering weapons, not to mention that he is at least 6 feet tall with full face makeup. He is ruthless and is entertained while he kills his victims, adding to the level of discomfort he brings to horror fans. If you have a weak heart or stomach, I would not recommend this, as Art does not care.

1. Pearl (X, Pearl)

I'm a STAR!

Pearl does not only redefine horror villains altogether, but has proven to be a murderous psychopath even into her old age. In 2022, horror fans were blessed enough to see Pearl’s entire and horrifying life in two separate stories with the odd films X and Pearl. In these films, our favorite female psychopath played by Mia Goth was the main antagonist in both.

Pearl is hell bent on getting what she wants at one point, and eventually resorts to dealing with what she has. Although this is something that she seems to be set on, she is truly unhappy and bitter underneath her facade of acceptance. Since she has serial killer tendencies, this leads to her turning into an unsuspecting villain. What harm is a farm girl, what harm is an old lady? Come down to Powder Keg farms and find out.

11. Resident Evil - 1996

Credited with putting the Survival Horror genre on the map, Resident Evil quickly became an international best seller and for a time the best selling game on the PlayStation.

Inspired by the more primitive horror title known as Sweet Home and directed by the legendary Shinji Mikami. The now iconic setting of the Spencer mansion and its many twists and turns lives in the hearts of many gamers. The game would see an extensive overhaul less than a decade later, yet the original is worth experiencing for the delightful FMV cutscenes and some unmistakably nineties voice acting.

9. The Forest - 2018

Sometimes the most chilling horror comes from the mind of independent creators, and The Forest represents a major indie success story - originally released via Early Access and both developed and self published by small team Endnight Games.

Taking inspiration from horror classics such as The Descent, the game combines modern survival mechanics and the horrors of a looming cannibalist threat to create a tense and deeply unsettling game about surviving both humanity and the elements.

8. Resident Evil Remake - 2002

After the Resident Evil name had become synonymous with video game horror, CAPCOM circled back to the starting point to reinvigorate the classic title with a fresh coat of paint.

As we have been boiling alive since this summer, we need spine-chilling horror stories that give us goosebumps to cool us down. I made this list especially for the people who think the spooky season should be all year round. I got ya’ll.

15. Doki Doki Literature Club (PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Mac OS, Nintendo Switch, PS5, Windows, Linux)

It would have been a crime if this critically acclaimed visual novel wouldn’t have been on this list. If you just heard about this game… Hi? Where have you been all this time? The game is from the perspective of a high schooler who reluctantly joins the literature club because of the pleas of his childhood best friend. After he joins the book club, he meets his horrifyingly beautiful love interests. The game is so well-reviewed because the plot structure is doesn’t follow the usual algorithm of a visual novel. The game resets itself, one character breaks the fourth wall multiple times, and you have to access the game files to proceed with the game. Also, don’t forget that it’s just Monika.

14. Firework (Windows)

Even though the game doesn’t have an English translation on Steam yet, I can easily appreciate the game for its atmosphere and it is great for anyone who appreciates Chinese culture. Follow Lin Lixun who investigates a crime scene in a remote Chinese village after there was an accidental fire. The investigation takes a twist as the police officers are delving deeper into it. If you are a fan of East Asian horror, be on the lookout for February 4th for its release.

13. Tiny Bunny (Windows, Mac OS, Android, Linux)

This is another game on the list that isn’t fully out yet. While there are only two out of five episodes out, the Steam community gave it an incredible amount of Overwhelmingly Positive reviews. The story follows Anton who moves his family in the Siberian woods, where children are missing and no one can find traces of how they disappeared. Thi game has many immersive elements such as the soundtrack and the Russian dialogue. Even though it is still early access, the game has a lot to give.

12. Steins; Gate (PS4, Android, PSP, PS Vita, PS3, iOS, Windows, Xbox 360)

Steins; Gate is the game that should be recommended to any visual novel enthusiast. After a group of students finds out how to send emails to the past while using a microwave, the quirky leader of the group, Okabe Rintaro, uses this device to help prevent the death of one of the group members, while also helping the other members of the group achieve their dreams. What makes the game interesting is the usage of emails via Okabe’s phone that affect the plot of the game.

11. Higurashi When They Cry (Android, Linux, Mac OS, PSP, Nintendo DS, Windows, PS2)

This is a classic horror series and the first chapter is free on Steam! After Keiichi and his family move to a remote village named Hinamizawa (I think I see a pattern here hmm…), he hears rumors of yearly murders. Keiichi decides to look into the mysterious murders himself alongside a group of girls. Sounds like a safe and fun activity to me! The game received a remaster and the art style is a lot more elaborate, and the characters have proper hands now compared to its initial release, so it is worth checking it out. The writing of this game is amazing, and the atmosphere that is set is bone-chilling especially when the music cuts off and you just know that shit will hit the fan.

10. The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters (PS4, Nintendo Switch, Windows, Linux, Mac OS, Xbox One)

Does anyone remember that Korean webcomic in which as you scroll through the comic the ghost jump scares you? If you are looking into Korean horror stories like the one I mentioned just now, here is a perfect recommendation for you. Mina Park wakes up in her school but something feels off. She knows that something is wrong when her teacher stalks her through the school. Try and survive the Sehwa district as everything seems to want to hunt you down. Craft different objects that could protect you, and remember not to use your flashlight for too long!

9. Umineko When They Cry (Xbox 360, Linux, Mac OS, PSP, Nintendo Switch, PS4, Windows)

This is a murder mystery that follows the events of a family reunion on a remote island. The reason for the gathering is that each family member is after the inheritance of the eldest member. During the family reunion, they receive a message from a witch that is said to live on the island, and then shortly after that strange murders occur. The action of the story is reminiscent of Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None, with the mysterious deaths of each person on the island. The game is long but worth the play, and definitely worth its money.

8. Hashihime of the Old Book Town (Windows, Mac OS, Android, Linux)

This is a historical horror story that takes place during the Taisho era of Japan. After Tamamori didn’t get accepted to go to university, he luckily gets to work at a bookshop. After he begins his studies for the next year’s entrance exams, he realizes he relives the same three days and his friends mysteriously die. Follow this charming psychedelic horror game to find out the mystery behind the deaths of Tamamori’s friends.

7. Zero Escape: The Nonary Games (PS4, Windows, iOS, Nintendo DS, PS Vita)

When nine people get kidnapped and taken to an unfamiliar place, they find themselves forced by an evil mastermind to put their lives on the line. At the beginning of the game, everything seems very confusing, but as everything gets pieced together, it gives you an “OOOH” moment. Zero Escape has interesting and mind-boggling puzzles that keep you hooked. The writing of this game is amazing and I can’t recommend this game enough. If you like escape rooms, you’ll definitely enjoy this game.

6. Corpse Party (Android, PS Vita, PSP-E1000, PSP, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Windows)

This is another cult classic for the horror visual novel enthusiasts. After a group of high schoolers performs an occultist ritual, an earthquake transports them to another alternate reality to Heavenly Host Elementary School. This group is trying to survive the attacks vengeful spirits of young children. The story is gripping and complex, and you’ll have to face twists and turns at every step of the story. There are many corpses in this game, but no party. The title is very misleading but I’ll let it slide this time.

5. Tokyo Dark (Windows, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Mac OS)

Tokyo Dark is a detective horror visual novel that focuses on detective Ito who is in the search of their missing partner. The choices you make during the game will affect Ito’s story and sanity, so you’ll have to be mindful of your decisions. The story is intriguing, but the English version of the game has a pretty good grasp of Japanese culture which influences the game a lot. The anime cut scenes are well made, and it has multiple endings. The game is quite short, but it’s worth the money if you play through all the endings.

This is a game my university professor has recommended after we learned about the White Terror era of Taiwan’s history. As you may have noticed in this list, I am a big fan of historical horror stories. What makes this game so unnerving is that it is inspired by a real-life historic event that haunts the people of Taiwan to this day. This game is quite short, so I recommend playing this in one sitting so you can fully immerse yourself in the story.

3. What Remains of Edith Finch (PS4, Nintendo Switch, Windows, iOS, Xbox One)

This game is known for winning the 2018 BAFTA Game Awards, Best Narrative awards at GDC 2018 Choice Awards, 2018 SXSW Gaming Awards, and the Game Awards 2017. This is the game that should get anyone into visual novels. Follow Edith as she explores the Finch family mansion trying to discover why she is the only person left in the family. Even though this game isn’t the typical text block visual novel, what makes it a visual novel is watching how the story unfolds in front of you.

Everyone in Japan knows of Hope’s Peak Academy. High schoolers who are naturally insanely talented in their field get to go to this academy. After the painfully average Makoto Naegi gets invited to attend the academy, he gets stuck inside the building with his other classmates. The students quickly find out that the school’s principal, an anthropomorphic bear named Monokuma separated them from the real world and the only way to get out is to kill the other students without getting caught. I keep saying that these games have amazing writing, and it is because they do, but this game has amazing writing.

Everything seems to rot and decay in front of his eyes, but suddenly he meets someone who seems normal. This game has been brought by the same developers who came up with Steins; Gate and the same writers behind Fate/Zero, Madoka Magika, and Psycho-Pass, so it is safe to say that this romantic horror story is of high quality and unforgettable.

I have watched up to 165 films to date. Some beg me to watch them again while some make me question my life. Which ones will make my top fifty list? Let’s take a look!

50. Séance

Séance (Trailer español)

Junko Sato with psychic abilities decides to use her powers to find a missing little girl. Things get worse when the child escapes from her kidnapper and sneaks into Koji Sato’s sound equipment trunk. Instead of taking the missing girl to the police, Junko hatches a plan to prove her powers are real. This was a movie made for TV. Guilt and stupidity are a deadly combination.

This is based off of the novel called Séance on a Wet Afternoon by Mark McShane

49. Higanjima

Akira’s brother has gone missing in this joint Japanese-Korean production. A mysterious girl comes by the house with the brother’s id, saying he’s still alive. Now, Akira goes out with his friends to look for him on an island of vampires. As one critic said, the vampires are "not the sensitive heartthrobs of Twilight but vicious, ravenous types who revel in terror and torture." So in other words, real vampires.

This movie is based of a manga with the same name

48. The Maid

Eighteen-year-old Rosa goes to work for a couple and their mentally-challenged son during the Chinese seventh month. However, her employers are not who they them. She has to unravel the truth while solving the disappearance of the previous maid, Esther. The ghost in here reminds of Kayako in the Ju-On movies. This movie is creepy and exciting at the same time.

47. Sick Nurses

A doctor and seven nurses sell dead bodies on the side while they work in a rundown hospital. One nurse gets killed when she threatens to go to the police after learning that her sister is having an affair with the doctor. Now, her ghost is looking for revenge. The killings... oh damn! It is just twisted, but then again it is a revenge horror story.

46. The Suicide Song

Anzu Natsuno hears her friend, Kanna, singing a weird song from the hall of their all-girls school. When she finishes, Kanna commits suicide. With the help of a magazine columnist, Riku Nagase, she and her friends try to reveal the urban legend of the “suicide song”. Most of the members of AKB48 are in this movie. The ending threw me for a loop there.

45. The Wailing

Soon after a stranger arrives in a little village, a mysterious sickness starts spreading. A policeman, drawn into the incident, is forced to solve the mystery in order to save his daughter. The picture looks so crisp and clear. I got confused on who was who at some points. The twist at the end leads to more questions in my book.

44. Retribution

A detective investigates the murder of a Jane Doe in a red dress. His missing button and fingerprints are found at the scene, but he does not remember what happened. The mystery seems to be connected to an abandoned mental institution. This is from the director of Kairo and The Loft. The ending is a bit creepy.

Horror is seen as expressing some kind of social illness and collective guilt

43. The Locker

The movie starts out like a typical American horror film with young people camping in the woods. After that, our group of characters get back from their trip and go to this storage locker to test out an urban legend. Then, we inch into the creepy stuff surrounding the mystery of said locker. The ending feels abrupt, but there is a sequel to it. It's pretty decent, not that great, but it's not boring either.

42. Unholy Women

Unholy Women / Kowai Onna (2006)

This movie is a compilation of three films. As per rule with my personal project, I will review each film separately and then do an overall review.

Rattle Rattle: Kanako ends up in a hospital lands a female jumper lands on her. Afterwards, she is haunted by a woman in a red dress. The ghost looks like she has on a rubber mask. And we have a creepy child in this movie. Most of the ghosts except for the little girl looks so cheesy.

Hagane: This one starts with boy gets set up on a blind date with girl by her older brother who happens to be his boss. Something seems off about girl. Boss/Brother seems to be shady. Boy and girl go off on date. Then things get weirder.

The Inheritance: A mother and son go to take care of her elderly mother. The mother becomes cursed after finding a scroll in the family shed, leaving her son in danger. Shimizu Takashi, the man who gave us the Ju-On franchise, had a hand in this. Because of this, the mother and son remind me of Kayako and Toshio. The ending is just disturbing.

Overall: This is what classic J-horror looks like. No gore is really needed. The segment I was oddly attracted to was Hagane. My verdict? Go and watch this movie.

41. Reincarnation

A young woman is acting in a movie about a professor who killed eleven hotel guests before offing himself. However, she and the other actors start having strange visions about the event. This is from the man who created the Ju-On franchise. He seems to love creepy children, doesn't he? Almost all of Shimizu's horror films have creepy children in them.

40. Infection

A patient dies from a doctor’s mistakes in a rundown hospital. The staff try to cover it up with dire consequences. This is from the guy who brought us Ju-on: The Beginning of the End. Part of the J-Horror theater series, this is one heck of a trip. It's pretty creepy and a bit gross. I seem to be attracted to mind-screw movies.

39. Ringu 0

Ring 0 Birthday (Ringu 0: Bâsudei) - trailer (full)

This movie covers Sadako’s life thirty years before she was thrown down her well. She was just a normal girl who acted in an acting trope to help cure her inherited psychic powers. Almost reminds me of Carrie. I feel bad for Sadako. Those people were real jerks to her.

38. Premonition

Premonition (2004) - Trailer

After the death of his daughter in a car accident, a divorced man is cursed with seeing the future from newspapers. He and his ex-wife try to unravel the mystery of the “Cursed Newspaper”. This is part of the J-Horror Theater series and from the man who brought us Ringu 0: Birthday. The ending gets pretty trippy and kind of confusing, but still great. I would recommend it.

37. Suicide Circle

Thirty-seven schoolgirls smile and hold hands as they jump in front of a moving train. Gory stuff with lots of people driven to suicide after hearing the child idol group, Dessert’s, hit single, “Mail Me”. Sono Sion really went all out for this, didn't he? The plot towards the end gets confusing and the ending is rather anti-climactic. One thing's for sure: "Mail Me" will get stuck in your head.

This and Noriko’s Dinner Table was supposed to be a trilogy

36. Phobia

Another Thai horror film and another split into four different segments. As the rules go, I will review each one first and then the all of movies as a whole.

Loneliness: (Happiness) A woman is stuck in her apartment because of a broken leg. One evening, she gets text from an unknown number and befriends the person on the other line. This segment doesn't have any spoken dialogue except she calls the number and the operator says the usual lines. This segment is beautifully executed. It all relies on showing you what's going on instead of telling.

Deadly Charm: (Tit for Tat) In our next section, a kid rides past some thugs on a bike. So the thugs chase him down, kidnap, and kill him. The bullied kid, Ngid, curses them all to die and the deaths all begin. The deaths are awesome and we are left with the traditional final girl who did nothing to stop the bullying. Except for the CG ghosts/creatures in this segment, it was pretty good.

The Man in The Middle: Next up, four guys are out camping. The men are just laughing and joking around. I love how the title of this film just sinks into the water. It's all fun until the raft collapses over. The movies references are rather annoying, but the segment is still good.

Flight 244: (Last Fright) A woman is a flight attendant who has to fly with the wife of her lover. The flight is pretty awkward to say the least. Things get worse when the princess dies from an allergic reaction from the flight attendant's lunch. Now, the flight attendant has to fly the body back to the princess' home country. There are some horror clichés and it's a bit weaker than the other three.

Overall: I love how all four movies connect into each other in some way. My favorite is Loneliness/Happiness for how it was shot. My second favorite would have to Deadly Charm/Tit for Tat.

35. House

HOUSE (1977) Trailer - The Criterion Collection

Gorgeous and her friends go to stay at her aunt’s house for the summer because her father got remarried. But then, the house starts to eat the guests one by one. As The special effects look so hammy and the movie is pretty campy. This is done on purpose, though. The movie is good when you want to kill time and it looks entertaining in an odd way.

A moody boy is dropped off at a boarding school to straighten out his behavior. However, it becomes clear that a lonely ghost is haunting the dormitory. This one starts off rather slow. There are small clues as to what is going on in real life. It turned out to be a rather touching story.

No relation to first film, The Eye. A woman ends up pregnant after a suicide attempt. But then, she starts to see ghosts following around other pregnant women. This one is freakier than the first movie. It's like Halloween III: Season of the Witch, but much better.

32. Kwaidan

This movie is comprised of four shorts. I will review each film separately and then do an overall review.

The Black Hair: We have a samurai who chooses wealth over love when he wants to advance his career. Ladies, if your man wants to leave you because of wealth and power, just slap him. Also the wiki page is misleading. There is no stranger telling us what happened in the end. It just cuts to the second story.

The Woman of the Snow: Two woodsmen, one old and one young, go out looking for wood during a snow storm. While sleeping in a hut, the Yuki Onna comes and kills the older man. Years later, the younger man meets a mysterious beautiful woman .Visually, it looks great. They followed the story just like it was written.

Hoichi the Earless: We start off with a battle reenactment before we get to the heart of the story. We follow a blind musician monk who plays for a mysterious court. This one was kind of boring, but the music and the images looked great. Plus, I reconigzed one of my favorite older actors, Shimura Takashi, playing the head priest in this. So, it wasn't too bad.

In a Cup of Tea: The man sees a face in the cup of tea and goes crazy. He goes missing and things get weird around his house as his editor and a neighbor look for him. I do love how the story tries into the frame story for this one. I wished that tea story had an ending to it. That would've been interesting to see.

Overall: Visually, they looked great. I think I will have to track down these stories and read them myself.

31. One Missed Call

One Missed Call (2003) HD

This is another movie from Takashi Miike. A girl and her group of friends are killed off after reciving one missed call of their predict last words. She now has to unravel the mystery with the help of a journalist to save herself. You think it’s going to be one way, but as the movie goes along, it takes another turn. It’s actually tamer than Audition.

The movie was remade in 2008.

30. Ringu

Ring - Japanese Trailer

This is another classic movie based off of a book. If you watch a mysterious video, you will die after seven days. A journalist and her ex-husband try to solve the mystery when she and their son get caught up in the curse after the death of her niece. Ringu spawned a franchise that will be just as iconic as Ju-On and Halloween. This movie alone spawned two different sequels, Rasen and Ringu 2.

Rasen was rejected as a sequel to Ringu

29. Kaidan

Kaidan (2007) Official Trailer #1 - Japanese Horror Movie

This is one of the movies that is part of the J-Horror Theater series. The father of two young girls is killed by a samurai. He curses his murderer before his death. When one of the daughters and the son of the murderer marry, the curse unfolds and takes effect. I did get a couple of jump scares when I watched it.

This is based off the ghost story, Shinkei Kasanegafuchi by Enchou Sanyutei

28. Onibaba

Onibaba is directed by the same man who directed Kuroneko. Like Kuroneko, this is period piece and features two violent women, one older and one younger, who kill men. Things unravel when the younger woman falls for one of the targets. I can draw plenty of similarities to this movie and Kuroneko. I think Kuroneko was better.

27. R-Point

R-POINT (2004) HD

A Korean platoon answers a distress signal from a missing platoon presumed dead during Vietnam. When they arrive at Romeo Point, the last known place the platoon was, creepy things start to happen. Intriguing ride, this movie is. I just keep waiting for the soldiers to die because you know it's coming. Most of it will make you go, "Ooo, that's not good."

26. Marebito

A man is looking for what caused the fear of a suicidal man in a subway station. He goes underground and finds a strange feral girl who feeds on blood. Ah, another film from Shimizu Takashi. Ah, the travels of a madman and a strange vampire girl. It's a good film for psychological horror.

This was made between Ju-On: The Grudge and The Grudge

25. Spiral

Spiral / Uzumaki (2000)

A town ends up cursed with spirals taking over everything. A girl and a classmate try to find out what’s going on and why. The curse isn't really explained or it might be explained in the manga. The acting is a bit campy and the main girl's voice is slightly annoying. I have to agree that special effects kind of take away from the scary factor of this movie.

This was double billed with Tomie: Replay

24. Rampo Noir

This movie is broken up into four shorts. I will review each short first and then do an overall review.

Mars' Carnal: It's silent. No, there is nothing wrong with the site/computer/DVD. It was shot that way on purpose. It's silent with a naked man walking through desert backdrop. There is some type of white noise in the middle, but this portion does have you curious on where the rest of this movie will take you.

Mirror Hell: This is one strange murder mystery. It starts out slow and a standard with the death of a tea ceremony teacher. Pretty soon, the lovers of this one beautiful man end up dying one by one. By the second sex scene it gets really strange and you are left wondering, "What the hell?"

Caterpillar: A woman has to take care of her amputee, mute war veteran husband. I thought that this would be the same thing as the late Wakamatsu Koji version. Same basic concept, but completely different. The sex scene was unnerving and the end made me go, "Huh?" I did the cinematography from the husband's point of view.

Crawling Bugs: A man become obsessed with an actress whose popularity is fading away. He ends up killing her and keeping her in his apartment. The whole time I was, "Dude, what are you doing?" I was intrigued on where this was going. It's rather confusing and the guy in this portion was really deranged.

Overall: Really weird movie, but visually appealing. I think the best one is Mars Carnal.

23. Exte: Hair Extensions

A man steals the corpse of a woman when was used for organ harvest to use her hair for hair extensions. However, the extensions become cursed and kill who ever wears them. Right away, the male main character is creepy with his hair fetish. Sion Sono definitely brings in his trademark creepiness. This movie is actually tamer compared to his other work.

22. Dark Water

This movie is based off a short story by Koji Suzuki. A mother is in the middle of a divorce and moves into a run-down apartment. She notices strange things happening around their new home surrounding the water. The original version of this is way better than the remake. Watch this movie when you can find it and pretend the 2005 version doesn’t exist.

21. Silk

Silk (2006) Trailer

A group of people are study what creates a ghost when they find a little ghost boy trapped in the living world. Sci-fi meets horror with this film. The ghost boy reminds me of Toshio from the Ju-On films while his mother reminds of Kayako. Good with special effects here. A heart-warming story about a mother and son love to boot.

Gold Circle Films wants to remake this

20. Dumplings

Dumplings (trailer) - Accent Films

This is the extended version of the short film of the same name. We get more details and a bit of a back story with the two main female leads. The plot and subplot are the same; (see further down the list). The ending, though different, is still chilling. Both versions are really creepy and I don't think I will be eating dumplings for a month now.

19. Strange Circus

This is from Sono Sion, the man who brought you Suicide Circle, Noriko's Dinner Table, and Cold Fish. An erotic author writes about a man rapes both is wife and daughter after the daughter sees her parents having sex. But, what is reality and what is fiction? The "strange" in the title doesn't even begin to cover it. When you figure it out, you will go, "Oh snap!"

18. The Host

The Host (2006) – Trailer

No, this isn't Stefanie Meyer's crappy book/movie. Right off the bat, the Americans ruin everything in the beginning when an American scientist orders a Korean one to pour chemicals down the sink. A dysfunctional family tries to rescue their daughter kidnapped by a giant monster. If you like Kaiju, I don't know what they call them in the Koreas, you will like this movie. The film got confusing at one point but rocking towards the end.

Part of the movie was based off an incident that took place in 2000 between South Korea and America

17. Noroi: The Curse

This whole movie is a found footage documentary looking for the origin of a curse. At first, the plot doesn't seem to go anywhere and just bounces back and forth to random places. The other half of the movie it starts to make sense. Then, it gets creepy. It has a Blair Witch feel to it.

16. Three… Extremes

This movie is in three different parts, so I shall review for each one.

Dumplings: An aging actress goes to local chef for a little treatment to regain her youth. Oh great, now I can't eat dumplings for a whole month! The beautiful singing didn't help either! I actually got to see Bai Ling in a serious, but creepy role though. Things you cannot unsee!

Cut: A popular director and his wife are being held hostage by a deranged extra. He has to play along with the twisted games or his wife’s fingers will get cut off. Creepy and sick. The ending was rather confusing to me. What the heck?!

Box: Ah, Miike Takashi. A young novelist is haunted by her circus past by nightmares of being stuffed in a box. She and her publisher try to get to the bottom of this. Still, the ending was confusing. Miike manages to throw in some sort of a mind-screw in his films to mess with the audience.

Overall: Mostly creepy. It's the producers were like, "Let's do Three again, but this time raise the stakes on the disturbing parts." Mission Accomplished.

15. Three (International Title: Three Extremes II)

This movie is in three different parts, so I shall review for each one.

Memories: A man can’t remember what happened to his wife. Meanwhile, his wife wakes up in the middle of the road and doesn’t remember how she got there. From the man who brought us A Tale of Two Sisters and I Saw the Devil. This section has the same feel as the former. Plus, it's not really scary at all.

The Wheel: Stolen cursed puppets are haunting this puppet trope. A puppet master and his family who originally owned them are the ones who die first. His rival then steals the puppets for his own prestige. Evil Puppets + stupid people= disaster. Plus, throw in a creepy kid and you better duck and cover.

Going Home: A police officer’s son goes missing. He is later held hostage by a Chinese doctor who keeps his dead wife around with the hopes that she will revive. More fun with creepy children! I don't know who's creepier-- the little girl in red or the guy with the dead wife that he's taking care of. I did not get the point of the little girl to begin with.

Overall: They were all decent, but not scary.

This is mislabeled as a sequel overseas despite coming first in 2002

14. The Chasing World

A boy is transported to a world where anyone with the name “Sato” is hunted down and killed. The key to getting back may lay with his dead mother. This one actually turned out to be really good. The premise is simple, but it kept me engaged until the ending. Speaking of which said ending will make you go, "What?"

This is based off of the novel titled, Riaru Onigokko by Yusuke Yamada

13. Noriko’s Dinner Table

This is the sequel to Suicide Circle. A young woman leaves home to start a new life after meeting new friends online. The lines of reality and fantasy get blurred when she meets another woman named Ueno. In typical Sono fashion, this movie is very bizarre. You will not understand what is going on at first, but it’s worth the ride.

There was supposed to be sequel to round out a trilogy with Suicide Circle

12. The Unseeable

The Unseeable - OFFICIAL TRAILER - Thai Horror

Starts out simple enough. A young pregnant woman is looking for her lover on this large house owned by a rich woman. Then it begins to turn creepy as the house is not what it seems. The twist will make you go, "Oh snap!" It doesn't end there; the "Oh snap!" factor keeps on going.

11. Jigoku

Jigoku (1960) HD trailer

We are on a trip to hell in 1960. A young man is dragged down a dark path after he causes a hit-and-run accident. He tries to wrestle with his guilt and the loss of his girlfriend dies in a cab accident. I do love the tortures in the hell scenes. This is a good movie if you are into theology and Divine Comedy by Dante.

This movie was remade in 1999 under the title Jigoku: Japanese Hell

10. Thirst

A priest comes down with a deadly illness while on a missionary trip in Africa. But, he is spared when he is turned into a vampire. He starts an affair with a married woman named Tae-ju after he stays with her and her family. Okay, Tae-ju is creepy! I mean, borderline Asami from Audition creepy.

Thirst is the first mainstream Korean film to feature full-frontal adult male nudity

9. Shutter

Shutter (The Original) - Trailer

A man and his girlfriend get into a hit-and-run accident after a night of drinking. They try to look for the victim and end up digging up darker secrets around her. This is not scary and very hard to feel sorry for the dude and his friends towards the end. They deserved it! You won’t need to watch the remake after this.

8. Audition

A widowed man holds a fake audition to look for a new girlfriend. Everything goes well with the relationship until she disappears after spending a night together. How disturbing is it? I ended up watching reruns of Whose Line is it Anyway? to get sleep that night. I can’t watch it again but I will recommend it.

7. The Eye

I'm pretending the American remake doesn't exist. A blind woman receives eye cornea transplant to see for the first time in years. Afterwards, she starts to see ghosts. The ghost licking the glass looked creepy. It's rather interesting.

6. Kuroneko

I decided to go back in time for some retro J-horror. This movie is in black and white. Two women are raped and murdered by rogue samurai. Because of this, they start seducing and killing samurai that pass them by. Go check it out when you have the time.

This movie was going to compete in the 1968 Cannes Film Festival, but the festival was cancelled due to the political climate at the time

5. Ju-On: Black Ghost

This was released as an anniversary piece with White Ghost. It’s pretty good like the White Ghost. A little girl is being haunted to the point she ends up in the hospital. Just like in the Ju-On movies, people end up dying due to the curse spreading around. This was how I fell in love with director Asato-san.

4. Ju-On: White Ghost

This was released as an anniversary piece with Black Ghost. A failed law student murders his family before ending his life. His curse spreads to ghosts of an old lady and a little girl. Just like in the Ju-On movies, people end up dying due to the curse spreading around. I really enjoyed both White Ghost and Black Ghost.

3. Ju-On: The Grudge 2

Kayako and Toshio are back when a horror queen gets into a car accident after filming a TV show in their old house. She ends up pregnant again after she miscarries her first child. The movie is still enjoyable though. So much so that I watch this every year along with the rest of the movies in the Ju-On franchise. This would also be the last Ju-On film directed by Shimizu-san.

It would be six more years before the next two Ju-On films would come out

2. Ju-On: The Grudge

A volunteer goes to check on an old lady in an abandoned house. From there, the curse of the Saeki family spreads to everyone who comes in contact with it. Even the police cannot help the poor volunteer. I watch this every year. This is still better than the American remake.

1. Kairo

Kairo, Pulse (2001) ㅡ Trailer

This little gem has a post-apocalyptic feel to it. Ghosts are taking over the internet and driving people to commit suicide. An employee at a plant shop and a college student try to get to the bottom of it and escape. I want to read the novel after this. It’s a slow burn that is kind of creepy.

There is an American remake with two more sequels

The 10 Best Open World Horror Games for the PC

You are in charge of the story, and whatever ending you get, or decide to prolong, it’s entirely inside of the player’s hands. The horror comes from different circumstances of unfortunate victims that you can either mercy kill or spare, and from the emptiness of the world. Atmosphere is everything with open world horror, and this list of the best excels in all of the above, creating unsettling and dark stories drenched with despair and emptiness.

10. Dead Island: Definitive Edition

Taking place in the tropical resort of Banoi just off the Australian coast, Dead Island is an untraditional place for a horror game already. The waters are blue, the sands sparkle white, and the zombies are hungry and shambling. Wait, what?

That’s right. This horror game features an outbreak of a mysterious plague that infects nearly all but the four main characters. The rapper Sam B., the front hotel agent and secret spy for the Chinese government Xian Mei, a former football star named Logan Carter, and an ex police officer named Purna are spared from the mysterious illness which turns people into psychotic, flesh-hungry monsters. The entire island is overtaken save for a few other immune survivors, and the game picks up there.

What is most striking about this game is the visuals, and the improved AI and combat in the definitive edition. The four different character choices makes no playthrough feel the same, and the fact that you’ve got such a pretty setting with sparkling beaches amid the chaos of zombie outbreaks feel refreshing on the part of the usual dark and bleak, grey and brown toned atmosphere of zombie horde games. Diverse player characters also ensures that the dialogue you get while playing doesn’t feel generic either, and the storylines of each expand the world past just the survivors. The enclosed atmosphere of an island with no contact to the rest of the ‘outside’ world also makes you feel confined, but still open to explore.

9. Dying Light

A mystery outbreak of a virus infects the town of Harran, and a special ops agent hired by the government is tasked with infiltrating the infected city and retrieving a sensitive document detailing its involvement in the outbreak. Kyle Crane, our main character, must outwit the aggressive undead and the warlords both in Dying Light.

Another zombie apocalypse grips the world in Dying Light. You fight to survive, craft weapons, defend your home, and save survivors in this open world horror game. What makes it however, is the addition of fun parkour in between the story-heavy plot and the free-roaming addition of shambling hordes of brain-hungry malformed zombies. What makes this horrific is the way that the camera is strapped to the main character’s head like a go-pro, and so you see each time that you don’t outsmart your enemies and get overwhelmed by the zombies with a hunger for your flesh.

The same production team behind Dead Island brings us Dying Light, but unlike its aforementioned game, the storyline is much more mature and weighted with the decisions the player makes. What makes this game interesting is the addition of a day and night cycle and a weather system as well. If you liked Dead Island but wanted a more in-depth look at the effects of sickness on the infected, you’ll absolutely love Dying Light.

These dune-buggies were modified to run over swarms of undead like this unlucky man who’s about to get hit.

3. Dead Matter

Taking place outside the United States, Dead Matter is a sandbox survival game which allows the player to focus on any aspect of survival they want. If you want to go out and create a community of the non-infected, you can do that. If you’d rather go alone in trying to preserve yourself, you can do that, too. If you just want to explore? That’s fine. It expands beyond just the city as well, and the crafting and customization seems refreshing. This release is scheduled for sometime in late May of this year.

If only every zombie horror game looked like this. This once bustling downtown is now filled with nothing but silence, and garbage.

This photo of the forest in development made me think it was real for about 3 minutes!

2. Metro Exodus

Taking place in a freezing climate, Metro Exodus is the kind of game that makes you want to play it underneath a big blanket. After a nuclear war has set the earth into a deep freeze, a man named Artyom must survive the freezing cold winter in Russia and fight off flesh-hungry monsters all at the same time. Monsters aren’t his only enemy, however - The game features hostile human enemies as well. This game is a continuation of “Metro: Last Light” and is scheduled for a full release in fall of this year.

1. State of Decay 2

This sequel to State of Decay is multiplayer and explores the zombified world yet again. Not a whole lot is known about the plot or the story just yet, but the graphics aren’t bad and the writing of the previous team hopefully holds up from the original. This game was released the 22nd of May.

8. The Forest

An unfortunate accident leads to a dark secret in this first-person survival horror game. When a plane crash lands on a mysterious island leaving all but a man and his son dead, you would think that the primary goal is to survive until rescue, right? Well, think again - Because Eric Leblanc’s son is kidnapped from the get-go, and now he has to travel the island and unwravel its mystery to find out who did it, and why.

Cannibals and mutated monsters are what make this game a horror game. Exploring dark caves with little light and fear of the unknown gets the adrenaline pumping and for good reason. Survival is key, and ensuring that you don’t starve or dehydrate or get lost in the labyrinth below the island is just some of the challenge. It’s tense, the setting is eerie, and the soundtrack only adds to the lonesome feeling.

That is, until you start to play with friends. Survival is naturally better with others, and The Forest welcomes multiplayer and even encourages it. Then the horror is not defending yourself from the cannibals, but arguing about who gets the last drop of water…

Ruins are now in the game too! If only we knew what had ruined them to begin with.

7. DESOLATE

Unlike most of these horror games, the scares come from the supernatural and paranormal rather than the undead. DESOLATE takes place on the island of Granichny, where unethical experiments have been carried out. You play as a Volunteer tasked with gathering information on the world’s mutation - and surviving.

Since this game just came out, there’s not a whole lot to say about the plotline unless you decide to go through it yourself, which I highly encourage if you have a love of mysteries and the supernatural. It’s dark, it’s mysterious, and it’s great to play with all the lights off.

Where does this pathway go? There’s only one way to find out.

6. State of Decay: Year-One Survival Edition

Stealthy, horrific, and looming with flesh-hungry monsters, this remake of the original State of Decay leaves nothing to the imagination. Trumbull Valley is filled with the results of a zombie apocalypse and it’s up to the survivors to navigate what was once their home in order to survive.

Featuring four player characters again, (which I am starting to wonder is the fault of Left 4 Dead), State of Decay is full of tough decisions for each and unique gameplay for all of the ‘chapters’ of each player character to get through. The open aspect of the town you once lived in is sort of sadly sweet too, especially when you start mowing down the undead in all the creative ways you can think of.

And the shambling citizens turned monsters are not your only obstacle. There’s also a group of back-water hillbillies who are flourishing within the ruined state of Trumbull Valley, and the player character will get to learn quite a lot about them. The possibilities are endless, as long as you can survive.

5. 7 Days To Die

World War 3 has left the entire planet in disrepair, and in the small city of Navezgane, Arizona, is full of people like the player character: Independent, and concerned with little but their own survival.

Taking place in the desert, this has the look of an old western but plays like an RPG combined with an FPS. Strategy is the key in 7 Days to Die, and every move you make and structure you build will reinforce how ready you are for the hordes of undead trying to crack your skull open and eat your brain.

So far this game is just a survival horror, but developers have hinted at the addition of a storyline somewhere down the line. The music makes you feel like you’re in a dying landscape and the tension of your decisions will leave you sweaty. 7 Days to Die is a great open world horror game because each item you pick up will have different effects on the oncoming horde. Planning, building, surviving, sacrificing citizens - The fate of Navezgane is in your hands.

The desert backdrop with cacti and red cliffs makes for stunning environments, even when you’re clubbing zombies with a spiked bat!

4. Hunt: Showdown

This co-op game is Darksider’s predecessor in spirit, and it shows. This competitive game takes place in another desert, in which your enemies are …refreshingly, demons! Up to four players can take turns sneaking through the underbrush to slay their targets, and thinking of ways to creatively send demons to hell is half the fun as teasing your friends about it.

You earn bounties in Hunt: Showdown that will boost your skills, so getting the kill on these otherworldly entities is a must. Voice communication is also a feature of the game, and it combines strategy with grotesque settings and visually striking monsters. It’s a hunting game like … the title implies, but instead of deer, you’re killing things with a lot more teeth and a lot more hunger for your blood.

If you like to hunt with your friends, this is the game for you. If you want to hunt your friends … I can’t help you there.

3. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl

If you ever wanted to explore the radioactive deadzone where the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl took place, look no further. You can explore the radiated area in S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Shadow of Chernobyl. The Zone as it is called is teeming with irradiated mutants, wildlife, hostile humans, and all sorts of other enemies.

Your main goal is to find a man named Strelok somewhere in The Zone and kill him while struggling with your amnesia and wondering who or what you are, exactly. The main character wakes up with no memory of himself or his surroundings, seeing only the acronym S.T.A.L.K.E.R. on his arm. Who is he? Why is he doing this? Who is Strelok, and what happened to make The Zone so hostile? This and various other questions will be answered during the duration of your playthrough.

Created by a Ukrainian development team, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Shadow of Chernobyl, is just as beautifully scary as it is dreadfully harrowing. The scariest aspect of this is that it could have actually happened to some degree, and the real life radiation OF Chernobyl itself is taken into account. The overpowered enemies in the beginning give you a sense of fear much like an old tv show, and your worry of radiation and starvation is also taken into account to create an intense survival horror game.

Walking through empty, hollow towns feels like an apocalyptic nightmare.

These men called the Duty Squad are here to help you get into Pripyat, which was affected the worst by the nuclear meltdown.

2. Vampyr

Jonathan E. Reid, a doctor turned vampire, struggles to satiate his newfound hunger in Vampyr. You can track people down, learn their routes and kill them stealthily, or just go on a blood-thirsty rampage in this game.

Set during the Spanish Flu Epidemic of 1918, your main goal is to either kill and drink the blood of humans, or to spare their lives and help the humans around you come to terms with their well-hidden secrets. Combining a rich story with a large amount of non player characters to learn about, Vampyr is about the people of London more than it is Jonathan E. Reid.

You can take your targets out stealthily or craft weapons to bash their heads in with - It all depends on if you want to develop your vampiric powers or go the old fashioned route with killing in broad daylight, though I don’t recommend the latter. Every decision the player makes reflects in the NPCS around them, so it doesn’t go unacknowledged when someone mysteriously dies in the night after being visited by the good doctor. If you go through the game without killing a single innocent … You’ll get a special ending, or so I’ve heard.

This clinic has seen better days. Early medicine is one of the scarier features in this game, I think.

1. Metro 2033

Based Dmitry Glukhovsky’s novel by the same name, Metro 2033 takes place in a world after the nuclear war where most citizens live underground. Survivors in Moscow have relocated to the Metro system in order to keep themselves safe. Artyom - The main character - leaves his home to find the underground and persuade the officials to help his hometown.

This game is eerie because of the low lighting setting, and because of the sprawling underground. You also get the option to fight mutated animals, scour for glowing mushrooms, or kill Nazi soldiers. The world above is still at war, after all! The tension in Metro 2033 comes from the mysterious hallucinations you get from people only known as The Dark Ones, but also from the mutated animals aboveground. Nazi forces also fight Communist forces, and there’s also bands of roaming mutants to be aware of.

Of course, you’re pulling the shots here. You can choose to help people or abandon them on your journey to find help for Exhibition. You can choose to lend hands to your fellow humans, or make their lives more miserable. Your karma system, so to speak, depends on the dialogue and gameplay choices you make. Is Artyom the hero of Russia? Or the monster? That’s for you to decide.

The ruins of Moscow is a sobering image. Artyom has to be extra careful up here, or else he’ll end up dead, or worse.
